Continued from page 1 empower the NamibianAmerican dream. The President arrived in Washington to visit the Namibian Embassy after a two-day San Antonio, Texas, trip, in search of additional trade, investment and tourism for our country. On arrival in San Antonio, the first couple were welcomed by Mayor Ivy Taylor. The signing of a memorandum of understanding with The University of Tennessee Health Science Center by Namibian Minister of Health and Social Services, Bernard Haufiku, served to be the highlight of the Namibian delegation’s visit. The agreement will allow an exchange of nursing students and medical technicians. Geingob also took the time to speak to members of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio at the University of the Incarcante Word. Geingob is the first Namibian President to visit Texas. In Washington President Geingob gave two lectures about the New Africa. The NBC reported earlier
that Dr Geingob had told his audiences that Africa was no longer the dark continent associated with coups and internal strife. He said Namibia was the first country on the African continent which drafted its own constitution. The President noted that Namibia was not wellknown in the United States because it was a peaceful country. He said Africa was marching forward in establishing democracy, with presidential term limits having become a norm in many countries. But, the Namibian leader acknowledged that the second phase of the struggle, which was to deliver services to the people, was daunting. Dr Geingob also warned against excluding citizens, saying inclusivity was the key to harmonious co-existence. Responding to a question about US-Cuba relations, he expressed optimism about the re-establishment of relations between the two nations. The Namibian President
is in the United States to attend the summit of the United Nations on the post-2015 development agenda and the 70th anniversary General Assembly session. Geingob departed for New York on Sunday, 20 September, where he is to attend the annual UN General Assembly Meeting – an event attended by all Namibian Presidents, each year. He will also give interviews to various media houses and talk to American business people about Namibia as an investment destination. President Geingob is the recipient of yet another prestigious international award. Read more about this on page 11. Geingob is said to deliver his speech on 29 September at the international get-together. The President will also meet with Namibians in New York this coming weekend, like he did with those in the Washington area.

Petrus gave Westhook Fish Processors an ultimatum. “I have given this company 48 hours to reply to those demands and for them to sit at one table
with us, together with the workers and sort out this mess - and if this mess is not sorted out we shall be forced to take steps. What they are doing to the workers, is not right”. When contacted for comment, Westhook Fish Processors’ Human Resources Manager, Desiree Le Roux, issued a statement. In it the company declares that it has not signed a Recognition Agreement with Nanlo/MMMC, and

Regarding the claims made by the workers, that they are working without gloves and have to buy their own PPE, Le Roux said “It is an internal matter so we are still sorting out ourselves. At this point in time, we cannot provide you with Westhook Fish Processors employees holding a any details with regard to peaceful demonstration outside the company premises the claims that they made.”

“Landless people should not be misinformed” – Swakop Mayor Marshallino Beukes According to some residents in the Mondesa suburb of Swakopmund, they were informed that an application for land by the “Kandume Group” had been approved by the town’s municipality and that they should hurry and complete their application forms in order to get erven. However, the Swakopmund mayor, Nehemia Salomon, yesterday stressed that no land application had been approved, nor land been allocated to any Mayor Nehemia Salomon group, as yet. Salomon remarked that he was aware of land-application letters, received from the Kandume Group, which is headed by Mr Godhardt Kandume, who is also the president of the Christian Democratic Voice political party. He told namib times that the group invited him for an unofficial meeting on Sunday, which he did comply with under strict conditions. According to the mayor he used the opportunity to inform the people present regarding all the procedures which must be followed before an application for land is approved and allocated to residents. As per the town’s first citizen, the meeting was concluded in good spirit and the attendees afterwards had a better understanding on the whole process of land allocation, which does take time to get to the final stages. He emphasised the fact that residents should be educated and informed about the correct procedures which should be followed and not be misled. Salomon concluded by
mentioning that pieces of land have been identified and will be serviced, but this land will only be available by the end of the year, as the municipality does not want to allocate un-serviced erven to residents. The newspaper was informed that residents who want to benefit from the Kandume Group’s application for land was urged to supply their payslips or proof of an income, copies of their IDs and voters cards in order to confirm that they are residing in the Swakopmund Constituency. The applicants are also asked to pay N$100. Mr Kandume was contacted telephonically and he noted that the N$100 fee is not part of the application process, but serves as a registration fee to become a member of the Group. According to him they had a “wonderful” meeting with the mayor, which was much appreciated by his group. He noted that all Swakopmund Constituency residents are welcome to apply for the land, regardless of their income, as
long as they are landless. Messrs Kandume and Engelhardt /Uirab, the leaders of the group, were arrested during February this year for trespassing after they and a group of people illegally tried to occupy council land and started erecting shacks as part of a land-grab. In his speech at the last Ordinary Council meeting, Mayor Salomon noted that the development project currently underway at Blocks 21 and 21 (Matutura) covers the installation of infrastructure services for approximately 252 erven. According to the speech, the contractor has completed 34% of the work to date. This project is earmarked to be completed by March 2016. He further remarked that an identical project, which is currently underway at Blocks 1 and 2 (Mondesa) caters for approximately 400 erven. The civil work has been completed, however the bulk electrical supply to the development will only be completed by January 2016.

Alfred John Ward(23), the E Med Res 24 Namibia paramedic who was one of the victims of the air ambulance tragedy that struck Namibia’s emergency services on 16 August near Cape Town International Airport, was laid to rest in his hometown, Swakopmund, over the weekend. Hundreds of people joined the family and friends of Alfred John Ward to say goodbye. The CEO of the Prosperity Group and E Med Res 24 Namibia, Bertus Struwig, who attended the funeral, was lauded by the family, for the care and support given since 16 August. Pastor Ruben Petrus of the Eagle Christian Centre led the service in the Apostolic Faith Mission Church
in Tamariskia, said Alfred John Ward lived an honourable life, a life of giving and caring - he will be remembered as a ray of light in the lives of many. Alida Ward had been silent for weeks. She was also silent when namib times visited the couple the past weeks before his return. But at the end of our visit, she suddenly said she was ready to break the silence – and to share her pain, and
the details of a dream she had dreamt some time before the air crash – a dream that at first was horrific to her – but that she’s lately perceived as “a chance to say goodbye.” “I did not understand then – I was shocked. In my dream he was overrun by a plane – and I saw him lying there, my strong, beautiful son – and I touched and stroked his lifeless body, and I kissed his brow.

Alfred John Ward, honoured by the emergency fraternity When I told Alfred about it, he asked me if I had bound the dream, and I said I did. When the tragedy struck, I heard that they had been carbonised beyond recognition – and I realised I
would never again be able to touch and stroke my son’s lifeless, carbonised body or to kiss him goodbye. Then it dawned on me that I actually already had that
moment to say goodbye.” When she stood at the grave of her beloved son on Saturday, Alida Ward was strong and calm, next to her husband, Terence.

Memorable Duneside Valedictory Despite Controversy Photos by Liesl Losper
Liesl Losper Duneside matrics had their Valedictory recently at the Municipality Town Hall. The parents of the Grade twelve students of Duneside Private High School, who also organised their matric farewell, had to arrange the Valedictory as well. Students of the High School attended it well and tears flowed after the event, due to the heartache that the students had to go through after the 40 days saga at the school. Ansie van Vuuren, previous Principal of Duneside High School, whom the children see as a phenomenal woman in the history of Duneside High school sent the students a letter which was read to the entire audience. The contents had all of them in tears her comforting words and sincere wishes for the future touched them deeply. “We are truly privileged to have had such an unforgettable valedictory ceremony arranged by our parents. Thanks to our parents, we are able to celebrate such an important part of our high school career, our graduation. We had a chance to reminisce on 12 years of growing - not just as a class, but as a family. We are so fortunate to have parents who
love and support us like this. Having had Mr Feris as our Master of Ceremonies truly made us feel at home. He has been more than an inspirational leader, too, and he has been a father figure to all 29 of us, ” the students said. They made a video with all their photos, narrating how the 29 students started out at the school at a young age. But a lot of sadness – almost bitterness – has remained, because of the way in which they were treated since their 40 Day event. A day before the Valedictory the current principal, Mrs Einbeck, refused a parent access to the flag of the school. When namib times arrived on the scene, the mother was crying outside – she was still in tears when she asked the principal “How can you be so rude, how can you deny the children the school flag, they only brought you back achievement after achievement.” “If I look at the huge success that the Valedictory
and Matric Farewell was, I'm grateful that the school has allowed it to reach this extent; but sad at the manner in which the Principal has handled this situation. Till this moment we are waiting for our reports - irregularities and incorrect detail on it still has to be rectified, and as a result, we still cannot send our final marks to the universities. The Principal was given an opportunity to apologise to us, but has not and instead said ‘I forgive you’. But we want to know, what have we done wrong? It is her second year at Duneside and she has stripped the Matrics of their Matric Farewell and Valedictory, after two more years what other traditions and customs of Duneside will she deprive the school’s learners of? The Valedictory has been celebrated at Duneside since 1982 and was the first of its kind in Walvis Bay. The principal told the Matrics that she ‘prayed and asked God for wisdom for eight days’ and then
Students watching the video of their time at Duneside High School
Now the studying starts waited for us to apologise. She said 'God has helped me come to the decision to take away your Valedictory'. How can a principal run a school, imposing her own religious views and opinions on others? Should education and maintaining the school's academic record not be at the top of your agenda? If she so-called ‘forgave us’ why has she not granted our parents the opportunity to use the school's flag at the Valedictory ceremony? Instead she blatantly said ‘no’ and walked out of her office while a parent was tremendously upset, showing that she has a 'personal vendetta' against us matrics, come on, we are
students at a private school! Since her time at Duneside, the school has not been awarded as best performing JSC, NSSCH and NSSCO school, an award always swept away by Duneside as a result of the student's academic performances up until 2013. Instead for the first time in many years a grade 10 learner has failed in 2014 and thus brought down the schools 100% pass rate, has she done anything to rectify the matter?” students from Duneside declared to the namib times. When students go and enquire why their report marks do not correspond with the exam marks they were told, we are the ones who give the school ‘a
bad name in the media’ and that we ‘have too much rights’ the students said to the namib times. “She has made the school a living hell for the matrics and many other students, we cannot even speak to our teachers and confide in them because they are being watched on the schools cameras and may be brought to question. In the end, we would like to attend a school in which we would like to send our children to, and as long as things continue like this, as long as some of the teachers and principal continue to victimise the students, I would not send my child to Duneside. Why has the Ministry of Education not inter-
vened?” (quoted from the declaration of the students) namib times are aware of some of the teachers who had supported the notion that the valedictory be taken away - and then, in the same week, they attended their own children's Valedictory at another school in Walvis Bay. The parents of the Duneside matrics are insisting on further investigation into this matter. The namib times tried on several occasions to give the principal the opportunity to state her position on the matter, but she clearly indicated that she was not interested in giving her side of the story.

“It cannot go on like this” Madelaine Laubscher
The namib times received numerous complaints from the public about the new calling system at Natis Walvis bay that allegedly does not work when they call to book for their learner’s licences. According to one complainant, he phoned their office 162 times and still did not get any answer. Another complainant said she was very upset because the calling system allegedly was out of order. “I spoke to an employee of Natis who said the system does work and she cut the call short. I started calling at 08:00 in the morning only to have a voicemail notify me that they are fully booked
and I should try again the next time. I thus started calling earlier the next time around. Once again it said they were fully booked and I should try again. We do not want to buy our learners’ licences. We want to write and obtain it in an honest way. Why does Natis not open offices in Kuisebmond, Narraville and at the Walvis Bay municipality and employ more people? It cannot go on like
this,” she fumed. The newspaper informed a spokesperson at Natis of the complaints and according to him they will look into the matter. “I will first have to speak to the specific department about these complaints. I will get back to you with more details as soon as possible,” he concluded.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson, Inspector Slogan Matheus confirmed that the incident occurred at around 18:00. The deceased and two other students, both aged 21, allegedly left the Emona Hostel at the campus using the northern exit gate and walked to the Baines Shopping Centre in Pionierspark to do some shopping. “Your success is our success” -Uilika Nambahu, Mayor of Walvis Bay Mavourlene !Gaёs
The Mayor of Walvis Bay Uilika Nambahu congratulated 20 teachers who successfully completed the Educarers programme presented by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare. The graduation ceremony was held at Namsov Learn in Peace Kindergarten in Kuisebmond under the theme “The future of tomorrow's leaders' start today, we can all make a difference.” Nambahu told the graduates their success belonged to the nation because the training they had received would enable them to make a huge contribution to the well-being of Walvis Bay and Namibia, by taking care of the young children of the community. “You may not realise it right away, but, if you follow the guidelines, core principles and objectives of your
training and implement them as expected, these little children will have a solid foundation to grow up as wellrounded citizens of our beloved Namibia.” She said, although early childhood development was left mainly to the interpretation of private care givers, they were certainly appreciative of the input by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare. “By training educarers, the Ministry is able to ensure that certain standards are adhered to. I am also pleased to know that there are monitoring and evaluation processes in place, to make sure our educarers do not stray

will be blessed as you see how these children develop and blossom into fine young teens and adults. Some of them, as young as they are,
might just treasure your role in their development and be indebted to you forever.” In conclusion, Nambahu said “Educatio n an d
training is something that continues for life and there is a lot more to be learnt beyond your current programme. Do not stop to find ways in your per-
sonal life to serve others, especially those in less privileged positions than yourself. Share your knowledge and expertise with others.”

Obtaining Fishing
Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations. WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Bart’s Bash 2015 celebrated Madelaine Laubscher
The Walvis Bay Yacht Club once again took part in the largest global sailing event on Saturday in which 3 700 participants had signed up worldwide. According to the Walvis Bay Yacht Club Commodore, last year was the first ever Bart’s Bash held at the coast where 16 000 boats in 60 countries took part. According to her, 9 450 boats in 237 locations worldwide participated, including the Walvis Bay Yacht Club that
helped to achieve the Guiness World Record for the largest sailing event. “In this year’s Bart’s Bash / Spring Festival, three African Countries participated. They were Namibia, South Africa and Kenya, with various Clubs in each country participating.
Representatives from Dallas Safari Club met with President Hage Geingob last week to discuss how best the Namibian Government and the club can work together and collaborate in conservation and antipoaching programmes. In an interview with Nampa immediately after the meeting, a representative of the club, Geoffrey Connor indicated that the Dallas Safari Club, which stages a large safari convention annually with attendance of about 30 000 people, has invited President Geingob to attend the convention in January 2016. “We invited President Geingob to be the speaker at the club’s convention that will take place from 9 to 12 January next year. We ask him to consider coming to Texas for the convention as a way of publicly demonstrating the solidarity between
responsible safari clubs, organisations and governments in Africa,” he said. Namibia has the best wildlife conservation programme in the whole of Africa, Connor said, adding that environment conservation is part of the country’s constitution. He said the country also has good procedures and laws to guide hunters, adding: “I am impressed with that. We are promoting and supporting responsible hunting and conservation, which is the same thing the Namibian Government is trying to do. We will be embarrassed anytime there is any type of corruption or illegal hunting or poaching. We want to help the Namibian Government to continue promoting responsible hunting and help the government in its efforts to curb poaching,” he said, adding that

SAN ANTONIO, 21 September – The Texas-based Dallas Safari Club plans to help the Namibian Government to curb the poaching of wild animals and form partnerships in game conservation programmes. Namibia is best known in Texas for its game hunting and safari services.

many countries do not have environmental and conservation protection laws in their constitution. “Namibia has already done the job and we want to help it to continue building on that. One thing we thought about was to establish better education and public information services talking about the advantage of hunting in Namibia, based on game maturity in selected areas, and those results will be published. “By doing that, you encourage responsible hunters to come to Namibia to enjoy the trophy hunting, as well as tourism and culture,” he said. On his part, Geingob said Texas hunters should not have second thoughts about visiting Namibia, as they are not strangers to the country. “Our constitution is the first in Africa to protect
the environment and wildlife. We are a good hunting country,” Geingob said. He said Namibia conserves its animals and that is why the country has a wide variety of wild animals. He explained that trophy hunting is not a question of obtaining a trophy per se, but how you kill the animals. “We are guarding our game and our trophy hunting is done in a proper way, and animals are properly conserved, which is why we have so many animals – we preserve them,” he said. The Dallas Safari Club is a hunting conservation organisation based in Dallas, Texas. With 6 000 members, the club has a worldwide contingency and holds its annual convention and auction every January. Much of what the DSC does throughout the year involves working to fund
efforts that surround their three-pronged objective: conservation, education and the protection of hunters’ rights. Last year’s expo drew protests over the auction of a permit to hunt a rare black rhinoceros in Namibia. The winning bid was US$ 350 000, all of which was aimed at supporting Namibia’s rhino conservation. A number of elderly rhino bulls are removed from the herd annually. Namibia has a black rhino population of about 1 800. The overall African black rhino population is thought to be about 5 000. They are threatened by dwindling habitat and by poaching for their horns, used to make ceremonial dagger handles and believed in some cultures to have medicinal value. NAMPA

COMMUNITY NEWS
UDF wishes to rule all Erongo municipalities The United Democratic Front of Namibia (UDF) party wishes to dominate the local authorities in Erongo Region in terms of representation by its councillors. They plan to do that through aggressive Local Authority Election campaigns set to start early next month. The 2015 Regional and Local Authorities elections are expected to take place in November. In Erongo, UDF is represented by two councillors in the Arandis and Usakos municipalities, while Swakopmund, Henties Bay, Karibib and Walvis Bay have one UDF councillor each. Speaking at the first meeting to prepare for the campaigns at
Swakopmund on Saturday, UDF secretary for the Swakopmund branch, Marius !Uwu-Gaeb indicated that the party wants to increase its representation in all municipalities in Erongo. “The municipalities should be ours. It must only be our members ruling there and we should not be satisfied with only one councillor in each municipality. “That is what we are fighting for. We know it is close to impossible but we will work hard to achieve it,” said !Uwu-Gaeb.
He said the campaigns will focus on motivating the youth to vote and be active participants in political matters because they are the leaders of tomorrow. “We need more votes to penetrate new grounds and that is only possible if we work hard and in unison. We must have confidence and be proud of ourselves,” he told a gathering of not more than 10 people. !Uwu-Gaeb further encouraged young supporters of the UDF to regularly attend
party meetings, be in contact with senior leaders to get advice and also give their input on development matters and how to grow the party. “As young people, let us not just see ourselves as voters but also as people who will be councillors and party secretaries in the near future,” he encouraged the audience. At the same meeting, !Uwu-Gaeb revealed his intention to compete in the Swakopmund Local Authority Election with the hope to win and be the party's second representative on that council. He said his partici-
pation in the 2015 Swakopmund Constituency by-election was just a start and learning experience for more challenges to undertake. !Uwu-Gaeb managed to gather 497 votes from the by-election while the DTA of Namibia's candidate, Christa Magrietha Hochobes, got 762 votes. The National Unity Democratic Organisations (NUDO)'s Uahimisa Kaapehi received the least votes of 358. Swapo's Juuso Kambueshe won the byelection with a whopping 2 621 votes. NAMPA

The Namibia Airports Company (NAC) refutes Media Reports over Scanners The Namibia Airports Company, has in a media statement, refuted “in the strongest possible terms” what they call “the untruthful and misleading manner in which technical specifications and functionality of airport scanners at Hosea Kutako International Airport (HKIA) have been portrayed to the public in the certain newspaper articles, such as “Airport scanners cannot detect explosives” - which was published in The Namibian newspaper of 9 September and “Faulty scanners must be removed” – The Namibian, 15 September.” The NAC has emphatically stated that all scanners and metal detectors at NAC airports do comply with prescribed international standards for airport security screening equipment. “The security screening equipment at all airports that are operated by NAC have been procu-
red in accordance with requisite security specifications that have been provided by our regulator, the Directorate of Civil Aviation (DCA) in the Ministry of Works and Transport. We further wish to draw the public's attention to the fact that luggage scanners and metal detectors are two separate types of security
screening equipment that are used for different screening purposes and both our metal detectors and luggage scanners are compliant to the said international standards. NAC is in fact proud to enlighten the public that apart from the security screening equipment at our airport being compliant with DCA specifi-
cations in the manner aforesaid, 75 major airports in the USA, Canada, and Europe are presently utilising exactly the same airport security screening equipment that NAC currently uses at HKIA and all the other
airports on account of their compliance to prescribed international security requirements and their effectiveness.” The NAC, says, in conjunction with other stakeholders, including Namibian law enforce-
ment agencies, it places high priority on safety and security at airports, hence they are not at liberty to divulge details pertaining to specifications of the newly installed scanners, as doing so would compromise national security.
The NAC says, in line with its three-year strategic plan (2014-17), compliance with international and local safety and security standards at all airports, remains priority number one.

'n Negatiewe rolmodel. Namibians in diaspora urged to raise funds for food bank Speaking at a gala dinner organised by the Namibian Embassy in Washington D.C., President Hage Geingob’s Constitutional Advisor, Inge Zaamwani-Kamwi called on Namibians in the diaspora to raise funds among themselves to help in alleviating poverty in the country. “By asking yourselves what you can do as a Namibian in the diaspora to contribute to the development of the country, you can consider raising funds to buy food for the poor,” she said during the dinner hosted in honour of President Geingob on Saturday. The dinner was also
attended by several Namibians living in the United States of America. She told the Namibian community the country plans to establish a food bank targeting the poorest of the poor. “You can raise funds and send those funds to Namibia and we can use those funds to buy food and distribute it. “Any dollar that you can raise in a Namibian context would be more than what you think a dollar can do for you here,” said Zaamwani-Kamwi, who is also the President’s Private Sector Interface Advisor. “That is one of the considerations that you
should take home and see how can you raise funds amongst your colleagues, families and friends, even if it is just US$ 1 000, (approximately N$13 600) it will go a long way to help us in setting up a food bank,” she said. President Geingob has been reiterating his call for the establishment of a food bank that will provide for hundreds of families struggling to put food on their tables. During his maiden State of the Nation address early this year, Geingob stated that in the Namibian house, no child should go hungry. “I am committed to the introduction of a food bank.
The willingness of several farmers to get involved in this initiative on a voluntary basis is indicative of how Namibians recognise that we will only eradicate poverty if we work together. Let us allow the spirit of Harambee to manifest itself for the good of all Namibians,” the President said. He said the reason the new Ministry of Poverty Eradication was formed is primarily to co-ordinate all aspects hereto and harness the political will of Government and the goodwill of Namibians as a toll in the eradication of poverty. WASHINGTON, 21 September – Namibians living in the diaspora are urged to consider raising funds to buy food for the very poorest of the poor in Namibia as the country embarks on the war against poverty.
Commissioner Inge Zaamwani-Kamwi has allocated land in Katutura to construct the food bank. The envisaged food bank will collect and distribute food to those in need. The concept, which was first launched in the United States of America (USA) in the late 1960s, has proven successful in prevent-
ing hunger and starvation amongst citizens. The Office of the Prime Minister was in 2012 instructed by Cabinet to constitute a multi-stakeholder task force to investigate the possibility of setting up food banks in urban areas. According to the government, food banks will help alleviate hunger
and provide for the basic needs of vulnerable people in Namibia by soliciting, collecting and packaging food, clothes, educational materials and other basic necessities for vulnerable people. NAMPA
Walter Don Wins Titans-Building Nations Awards Nam-mic Financial Services Holdings’ Chief Executive, Walter Don, was recently awarded as the first ever country winner for the Titans - Building Nations Awards. Don won in the Financial Services sector category while Dr Suresh Kana, from PWC Africa was the regional winner. “I am humbled by this prestigious award and would like to thank the Shareholders and Directors of Nam-mic Financial Services Holdings (Pty) Ltd for allowing me to lead the business the past ten years. It is exciting to constantly look for innovative and creative ways of improving our business to ensure that we create a winning organisation,” Don said after receiving the award at a function held in Windhoek last week. “In Namibia and especially on the African continent we need leaders that are focused, decisive, accountable, ethical and honest,”
Don said. “This award means such a lot to me personally, my staff members and the ultimate shareholders - the workers of our country, as it is testimony that our country’s empowerment initiatives work if managed correctly and responsibly,” Don said. Don was a Human Resourced Practitioner for 17 years before he joined Bank Windhoek as an Executive Management Member responsible for Human Resources, SME and Micro Finance and Business Development before being appointed as Chief Executive at Nam-mic Financial Ser-
vices Holdings. Nam-mic Financial Services Holdings is a Black Economic Empowerment partner company of Bank Windhoek. Don also serves as a trustee of Nawa Life. For many years, Titans - Building Nations was a platform where South African organisations were showcasing their transformational excellence. In 2014, Analize Wepener, Chief Executive of CEO Holdings looked at the African business landscape and determined that it was time to up the ante and honour the men of the African continent. By virtue of the nature
of the awards, not anyone can be honoured as a Titan. “While we may receive thousands of nominations from across the continent, there can only be a select few who stand above the rest,” said Wepener. “As we saw from the first year of the awards, our continent is awash with great men and women who selflessly give of themselves for the betterment of our continent. “Needless to say, the first year of the awards was an immense success and the future looks bright for the Titans-Building Nations Awards.

My Trash my Treasure prize-giving Madelaine Laubscher
A competition that aims to raise awareness of the value of waste materials, that started a few months ago amongst schools in the Erongo Region, ended last week Friday, when the winners were announced at the Walvis Bay Municipality. The Mayor of Walvis Bay, Mrs Uilika Nambahu, gave everyone a warm welcome. She said, “142 learners from various schools participated in this competition. I appreciate the tremen-
dous initiative behind this creative competition and say this is truly an innovative way to creating a great love for a tidy and well-kept environment and by bringing a change of attitude towards our environ-
ment. As such, I am deeply pleased being amongst all of you to bear witness of the prize-giving exercise. As the world population grows, the need for resources is on a massive
increase, requiring the adoption of recycling, reducing and re-using. The resources at our disposal could be depleted or will pollute our environment if we do not find innovative ways to deal with how we live and what we make use of in our daily lives. It is important that we become more sustainable when using natural resources and also change our perspective regarding environmental conservation. I want to add those teams who have not won, to not give up but to see it as an opportunity to live sustainably. This is a worthwhile exercise.” The Project Coordinator from NACOMA, Mr Cameron Kandjii, said it was an honour to be part of this initiative. “It forms part of the coastal biodiversity week. We have been placing
efforts to ensure that the coastal environment is protected while at the same time also promoting sustainable development for the future generation. Waste management have always been a hot topic and debate because all we want is to live in a clean environment. We should all avoid littering. Education starts at home. We urge all parents to teach their children not to litter. We should implement reuse, reduce and recycling. My trash is my treasure. Thank you to all the sponsors and everyone involved who took an active role in demonstrating their creativity. It is a very good initiative. All 142 participants are winners. Your efforts will make a difference. You are all custodians in our eyes,” he said.
The following winners were announced at the prize-giving event: The secondary school winners, Grade 8-12: 1st Prize: Daniella Ouses from Westside High School who made a Handbag out of black plastic bags. 2nd Prize: Alpheus Herman from Westside HS who made a clock out of used CD’s. 3rd Prize: Joedin Kamati from Flamingo Primary School who made a sack rack made out of old jean pockets. Westside High Valedictory Service
At Westside High's Valedictory it was an unforgettable moment when everybody rose and the matrics entered on the song, Con te Partiro - or "Time to say Goodbye"...
"...Time to say goodbye to countries I never saw and shared with you, now, yes, I shall experience them. I'll go with you on ships across seas which, I know, no, no, exist no longer. It's time to say goodbye‌ The theme of the day was: "Alive Today!" Many parents and friends were part of the special event.

Corban Le Fleur brings gold to Narraville Primary School
After competing in the Regional Science Fair that was held on 7 – 9 July in the Municipal Town Hall, Corban obtained a Gold Medal for his project in the Mathematics category, titled “A Solution to Multiplication''.
He was then selected to take part in the Nampower National Science Fair that was held during the week of 7 – 11 September. Independent judges evaluated his project and interviewed Corban who had to explain his project and also what value it can add to learners who struggle with multiplication. Cricket development skills tested during the weekend
Liesl Losper
The weekend was organised to give young cricket players more opportunity to play against other schools of the country.
This brought various schools together to test their skills. Teams involved were WBPHS u/11 and u/13, Tsumeb Gimnasium u/13, Edugate Academy u/13, Pro Ed Academy u/11 and u/13 and four teams from Nara Primary. Schools from Tsumeb, Otjiwarongo, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay attended. Separate games took place at, the Oval, Jan Wilken and Sparta stadiums. “Walvis Bay has great facilities that can accommodate at least 10 teams at the same time. The love for cricket in Namibia can only grow with weekends like these. Development is the main aim of this weekend. Thank you to Standard Bank for the great facilities at WBPHS and also to the municipality of Walvis Bay for the use of the Oval, Jan Wilken and Sparta. They intend to let the weekend grow into an annual event and develop Namibian cricket,” Morne Rust, one of the organisers said to the namib times.

Upliftment in girls' soccer, a necessity Liesl Losper Under 13 girls soccer teams of Narraville, Flamingo, J.P. Brand, Kuisebmond, !Nara, Immanuel Ruiters and Duinesig primary schools were part of a learning program on Saturday at the Atlantis sports ground in Walvis Bay. Different coaches from the community were involved in this program to assist the teams individually to better themselves. This was initiated by Indongo Walvis Bay for the upliftment of soccer in girls’ teams. A representative from Indongo Toyota said, “We are doing this so that soccer, especially for girls can reach higher destinations. We want them to enjoy and also to assist them to get better at what they do. Through this we would like to give appreciation back to our community.” Various prizes were awarded: Best Team Spirit - Kuiseb Primary School Goalkeeper of the day - K Uariua. Player of the day - N Naanda. Most Disciplined Player - M Noble. Team of the Tournament - Duinesig Combined School Player of the tournament - Vistorina Naanda also from Duinesig Combined School.

Rossmund Golf News
Course Information For those who were not fortunate enough to have played golf for a while - the Number 1 Tee box has been returned to it's old location just under the clubhouse - so history in the making. Bit off putting for those who have limited vision - but I can assure you the fairway is still in the same place so just close your eyes, head down and go for it. The renovations to the tee box on Number 4 are also complete - next on the list is Number 6 but this will only be tackled in the New Year. Number 4 and Number 8 fairways have had some new sprinklers installed - so hopefully the water features along the fairways will disappear. The renovation of the bunkers is ongoing - the big one to the right of Number 4's green will also receive a facelift. Members should please take note that the rocks to the right of the fairway on Number 17 are an integral part of the golf course NOT GUR - please refer to the Local Rules for your options. Daniel Kashela (32) from Walvis Bay is a well-known boxer and will be competing in Windhoek on 22 October for an International title. He said he wants to inform the local community that he is ready to fight and to make the Erongo Region proud and happy. “I started boxing in 1998 as an amateur. I will be fighting in the Junior midweight category (69 kilograms). I have won 16 out of 20 matches in the past. I have travelled to South Africa, Angola, Canada, England and Morocco for boxing. I want to let my people know that I will bring the boxing belt to Walvis Bay. Harry Simon, a renowned boxer, will also be fighting that night. I want to thank Harry for helping me become somebody. Thank you to all my sponsors and for always being there for me Daniel Kashela ready for the boxing match in in good times and in bad,” he concluded. Windhoek
Shakir Desert Cycling Challenge
Last Sunday saw more than 25 cyclists supporting Shakir in a quest to raise N$45 000 towards an operation that he will undergo to try and rectify his condition, Clubfoot. Any funds that remain will be kept towards the operation on his other foot early next year. Clubfoot is a deformed foot which is twisted so that the sole cannot be placed flat on the ground. Both this 13 year old's feet are affected. Lana, his mother came up with the idea to host a cycle event to collect money for the bills to come, and approached Danny Beukes for assistance. Together they managed with the help of friends, family and co-workers to make this ride possible. Hosted by the Desert Raceway, the start and finish were at their premises just 7 km en route to the Walvis Bay Airport. The event consisted of 3 distances: 101km, 40km and a
kid's ride of 5km. Ten cyclists dared the 101km through harsh weather and road conditions. All of them finished, with the winners clocking in at just less than 4 hours. Tobi Gerber was the overall winner of the 101 km, with Klaus Frielingsdorf right on his tail while Pieter Beukes took the first place on the 40km route. Medals were issued to all riders while a special handmade trophy was awarded to Tobi. All in all the entire day was a success, with many records broken: a 10-year-old girl cycled her first ever 20km, a 38-year-old lady cycled her first ever 100km, while Shakir participated in his first cycle event. The organiser would like to thank the host, Desert Raceway, all the sponsors and above all, the cyclists who so bravely supported the event.

Rugby World Cup - “No Second Surprise on the Cards”- Davies…
WINDHOEK, 15 September 2015 - A ‘send-off extravaganza’ was held for Namibia’s national rugby team, the Welwitschias in Windhoek on Tuesday. The team departed for London in the United Kingdom for the 2015 Rugby World Cup on Tuesday afternoon. Welwitschias captain Jaques Burger (pictured here) told the media that although the Rugby World Cup is a massive responsibility, it is also a great opportunity for the team to perform with greatness. He said seeing people come out and support them during the send-off means a lot to the team. Namibia’s first encounter in the World Cup will be on Thursday, 24 September 2015 against New Zealand in Pool C
WINDHOEK, 15 August 2015 - The Welwitschias pictured with the Africa Cup Division 1A trophy at the Hage Geingob Stadium after beating Zimbabwe 80-6 first appearance in 1999. In 1987 they were not invited, in 1991 Namibia did not enter and in 1995 they did not qualify. Out of a total of 15 World Cup matches the Namibians have played so far, they have scored 144 points with 974 points stacked up by their opponents which translates to an average losing score of 65-10. Head coach Phil Davies said this week that he was satisfied with the progress made by the players since their arrival in London on
Monday. They had a team practise on Monday which follows three training sessions at Cobham in the south-east of England in addition to game
planning sessions. The next few days will be crucial before they take on the All Blacks in a Pool C clash. Davies said to the Namibia Rugby Union’s
(NRU) Media Service that he dispels any false hope of Namibia pulling off a similar giant-killing act against New Zealand. “All we can do on
Thursday is to go out and play to our full potential and give a good account of ourselves.” Contributed by Wallace Muir
