NAMCOR is pleased to announce the VENUS-1X inside Swakop deep water discovery National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia – (NAMCOR), businessthe Namibian state-owned oil company is pleased to announce a major light oil and associated gas discovery on the Venus-1X prospect, located in block 2913B (PEL 56) in the Orange Basin, offshore southern Namibia.
The Venus-1X discovery is located approximately 290 kilometres off the coast of Namibia, in the deep-water offshore exploration block. The well was drilled to a total depth of 6,296 metres, by the Maersk Voyager drillship, and encountered a high-quality, light oil-bearing sandstone reservoir of Lower Cretaceous age. Block 2913B (PEL 56) comprises of a Joint Venture group that includes TotalEnergies (40%), QatarEnergy (30%), Impact Oil and gas (20%), and NAMCOR (10%). Namibia's first green hydrogen production plant was launched by the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group and CMB. TECH on Tuesday, 22 February. The plant will be built in the Erongo region. In a statement by the Economic Advisor to the Namibian Presidency, James Mnyupe on what the government is trying to achieve with the Green Hydrogen Demonstration plant, Mnyupe gave his views why energy security enhances economic growth, while energy insecurity measured by energy intensity and carbon intensity variables has a negative impact on economic growth: “We are pursuing energy independence from a troubled Eskom, we pay about 3 billion Namibian dollars for the 60-70% of the energy we import from the SAPP, 40% of it comes from Eskom. It is well documented that our electricity is some of the most expensive on the continent, and as a result, we are losing out on large investment opportunities including the recent Vedanta refinery that was poised to deploy N$6.5 billion dollars into the economy. As these gigawatt projects are built in the South, we are exploring the possibility of off-taking curtailed and dispatchable power from them at attractive prices, positively impacting our current account surplus, reducing our cost of electricity and ultimately increasing our competitiveness from a manufacturing point of view.

discovery by TotalEnergies has demonstrated the world-class potential of this new play in the deep-water of the Orange Basin, which could be a major game changer for Namibia's economy and its people. We look forward to the upcoming appraisal programme to quantify the extent of this major discovery.” The National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia – NAMCOR, is the legally enacted entity under the Namibian Companies Act 28 of 2004 with the Government of the Republic of Namibia as its primary stakeholder. Acting under the Petroleum (Exploration and Production) Act of 1991, NAMCOR has a mandate to carry our reconnaissance, exploration and production operations.
The media release by O&L reads: The plant, a demonstration hub for hydrogen applications, will be built in the Erongo region. The construction will start during 2022 with the aim to be operational by the end of 2023. Depending on the results of the demonstration plant, a larger scale production plant will follow in a second phase, possibly using ammonia as transport fuel. The O&L Group and CMB.TECH also announced the joint venture, Cleanergy Namibia, which will develop green hydrogen production projects in Namibia including leading the green hydrogen production plant and demonstration hub, its first development in Namibia and the continent. The aim is to produce green hydrogen from solar power and distribute the clean fuel to heavy-duty applications like trucks, locomotives, mining equipment and ships. The O&L Group's strong local Namibian footprint and expertise in the development of renewable energy parks, and the hydrogen and industrial knowhow of CMB.TECH are a powerful combination to deliver this unique project. Executive Chairman of the O&L Group, Sven Thieme: “At O&L, we are guided by our Purpose, “Creating a future, enhancing life”, and one of the biggest concerns of our time that will directly affect the quality of the future we create is climate change. The world is in a race to limit global warming and reach net-zero emissions by 2050, in accordance with the United Nations' global roadmap, and one of the key shifts required to ensure a sustainable future includes the transition to clean energy solutions. While the move away from fossil fuels may take several paths, green hydrogen is one that shows tremendous potential in getting us there. Namibia is a growing hub when it comes to the generation of renewable energy, whether that be through solar, wind or hydroelectric power, and this is what makes our country optimally positioned to explore the generation of green hydrogen, or hydrogen that is generated using renewable electricity. With Namibia's capacity to generate solar power in particular, the country has the potential to be at the forefront of green hydrogen development and progress towards greater energy independence. It is with these encouraging prospects that we have established Cleanergy Namibia, a company designed to explore green hydrogen generation through the country's first green hydrogen demonstration plant, an investment worth about US$18 million, set to be completed and operational in 2023.”
Swakopmund businessman in court for fraud among Sharlien Tjambari other charges Swakopmund lawyer and businessman, Gerhardus Johannes Van der Merwe and co-accused Luis Margues, Alexandre Coimbra and Herbert Rene Sauerbrei appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrate Court on Wednesday, 23 February on charges of fraud, failure to provide relevant information to the executive director - contravening of section 167 (b) and (c), and a charge of operating a small aeroplane without the air operator certificate. The fourth accused in this matter is Bush Bird Aviation CC, which is owned by Van der Merwe. The trio were allegedly not arrested by police, but summoned to court after they have been investigated by the Namibian Police for quite some time now. The accused appeared in front of Magistrate Nelao Brown, and their case was remanded to 23 May this year. At this stage it is not clear on what let to their appearance in court, as police in the Erongo region have not yet issued a statement. Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu confirmed that they have a report about the accused in question and a full report will follow.

CEO of CMB.TECH, Alexander Saverys: “We are delighted to announce our joint venture with O&L today and the launch of a very innovative project in Namibia. Namibia has the potential to produce green molecules (such as hydrogen and ammonia) on a large scale and at low cost. Green and affordable molecules are an essential part of the energy transition. With our announcement today, we hope to demonstrate that words can be turned into actions when it comes to green hydrogen projects!” Cleanergy Namibia's ambitions go beyond the initial production and demonstration plant. Building on the expertise that will be acquired during the construction of the hydrogen plant, Cleanergy will simultaneously develop a much larger green hydrogen and ammonia factory in Namibia. By starting the hydrogen production plant already in 2022, Cleanergy Namibia wants to demonstrate that green hydrogen projects are already a reality today. Thieme: “The demonstration plant could prove to be the first step in creating an entirely new industry in Namibia in addition to enabling knowledge transfer into the country; upskilling opportunities and creating employment; driving further research, including collaboration with the University of Namibia; and developing future offtake opportunities in sectors such as transportation, mining, heavy machinery, and power generation. Many supportive hands have made this endeavor possible. I would like to acknowledge and appreciate the endorser of this project, the Namibian Government through His Excellency, Dr. Hage Geingob who has demonstrated a keen interest and taken the lead in promoting this field in our country. I also extend my thanks to an ideal partner sharing the same values and long-term thinking, CMB.TECH for the confidence and trust they have placed in O&L and Namibia as a partner in the green hydrogen development. Lastly, a big thank you to all the valued stakeholders who have played a role in the materialisation of this project.” Cleanergy Namibia supports the development of a green hydrogen research centre in collaboration with institutions of higher learning that will serve as a powerful knowledge base to train and educate Namibians and develop local expertise to become a leader in the energy transition. It will further collaborate with national, regional and local governments to develop this innovative project, and is in concrete discussions with end-users that want to be part of this revolutionary project.

Mass die-off of Seals at Pelican Point The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, in a statement dated Friday, 24 February, said the ministry has noted with concern a high number of dead adult seals that was observed this week at Pelican Point. The same situation of adult dead seals has been observed in South Africa. The cause of the mass die-off is not yet known; however, it is suspected that it is caused by Domoic Acid but this is yet to be confirmed.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources is busy conducting tests and analysis of on-site water samples as well as the tissue samples of dead seals to establish the actual cause of the mass seal's death.

Visit Brazilian Ocean Patrol Vessel Amazonas Brazilian Navy ship, AMAZONAS, will be docked at the Port of Walvis Bay from 1 to 4 April in order to participate in OBANGAME EXPRESS 2022 with African countries to increase maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. The Brazilian Navy Ship, OPV “AMAZONAS”, currently commanded by Commander Leonardo Gomes Barros, is the first of three vessels from the Amazonas class, that was commissioned into the Brazilian Navy on June 29th of 2012, at Portsmouth Naval Base, in the United Kingdon. The OPV, built by BAE Systems Maritime – Naval Ships, received the name Amazonas, because of an important brazilian river, consider the longest of the world and the largest by water flow, in the north
of Brazil. The main characteristics are: - Length 90,5 meters - Endurance 35 days - Embarked troops 50 marines - Crew: 12 Officer and 69 Enlisted men The “AMAZONAS” was built to make the surveillance of extensive maritime areas. Due to its great autonomy, its capacity to operate with a helicopter and the fact that it has two boats, the ship
contributes to the protection and inspection of Brazilian Jurisdictional Waters, our “AMAZÔNIA AZUL”. The mission of OPV “AMAZONAS” is to execute Naval Patrol and Search and Rescue Operations, logistically support installations on ocean islands and Hostage Recovery and Rescue Operations in order to contribute to the conduction of Benign Activities and limited use of force, aiming to safeguard human life and Brazil's interests at sea (in the extension of the AMAZÔNIA AZUL®), and to support Brazilian foreign policy. After its commissioning, “AMAZONAS” carried out an intense training program conducted by Royal Navy's Flag Officer Sea Training (FOST), before starting its transit trip to Brazil, arriving in Rio de Janeiro on October 5th, 2012. The ship has already carried out several missions with friendly navies, including one Operation PAMPAREX, in Argentina, in 2013, three OBANGAME EXPRESS, on the west coast of Africa, in 2015, 2018 and 2020, one IBSAMAR V and an International Fleet Review in India, both in 2016. The OPV “AMAZONAS” will participate, from February 15th to April 7th, in the Exercise Obangame Express 2022. It is the fourth time that the ship participates in this maritime security exercise, in the Gulf of Guinea. The joint exercise "OBANGAME EXPRESS 2022" has the purpose of training is to enable the participating countries to provide maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, through simulation exercises to combat illegal fishing, pollution at sea, piracy, maritime terrorism and assistance to ships in distress. The ship departed on 15 February 2022 from the Rio de Janeiro Naval Base, and will return to Rio de Janeiro on 7 April. During the operation, it will visit the following cities: Salvador, in Brazil; Walvis Bay, in Namibia; and Luanda, in Angola.

Sassa to verify social grants A delegation of officials of the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) will visit Walvis Bay from the end of February to middle of March to review the verification process of active beneficiaries. Sassa currently pays social grants to 579 beneficiaries residing in Namibia. This includes 59 disability grants, and 520 grants for older people, and of these, 172 people are older than 75 years old. In a submission letter to the South African Minister of Social Development, which Erongo had under review 24/7, approval was requested which was granted for a delegation to visit Namibia. The submission further states: "Although the grants are paid in accordance with the requirements of the relevant law, a challenge has been identified in that some citizens have obtained Namibian citizenship and receive social support from both South Africa and Namibia." Legal opinion was sought to confirm that a South African citizen is not entitled to dual citizenship unless they have applied for and obtained permission for dual citizenship prior to obtaining foreign citizenship. If the beneficiaries concerned are Namibian citizens, and do not comply with Section 6 (2) of the South African Citizenship Act (1995), they have automatically forfeited their South African citizenship. This means that they are no longer eligible for social support from South Africa. Before Sassa cancels any social grants, there must be a documented review process, as set out in the law. Other challenges that the review team will have to consider include Namibian beneficiaries operating bank accounts with a Namibian identity number. This means that these beneficiaries are Namibian citizens. In addition, when a beneficiary dies, it is
reported to Namibian authorities, but not to South Africa. Sassa then continues to pay the grant, often for a long period after the beneficiary's death. The review process is
expected to take place from 28 February to 22 March at halls in Walvis Bay. Home visits for beneficiaries living more than 300km from Walvis Bay will commence
from 7 March to 15 March . A handwritten review process will most likely be followed, as Sassa network connection at the various halls may not materialize.
