Facing the Giant: One Woman's Journey through Breast Cancer Leandrea Mouers

“After battling breast cancer, life as you know it will never be the same again." Emily*, who was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer at the youthful age of 29, knows this all too well. "I felt a lump in my right breast, and after discussing it with my mother, I went to see our family doctor. He had a no-nonsense approach to the lump, and I'm convinced that if he hadn't been so persistent about me getting a sonar and a biopsy, things could have turned out very differently for me. He saved my life with his nononsense approach and held my hand throughout the whole journey." She had

to undergo six months of chemotherapy and had a double bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction done in South Africa. A double bilateral mastectomy is the surgical removal of both breasts at the same time. "I had my surgery during the COVID pandemic, so it was very difficult to recover from a major operation like this alone in a hospital without any loved ones surrounding me. I only had the surgeons and nurses to comfort me. Due to COVID-19,

I could only spend three days in the hospital, as we had to return to Namibia within the next few days. Once back in Namibia, my mother and I had to quarantine for 14 days. It was absolutely insane. I was diagnosed in 2019, had my surgery in 2020, and I have been in remission ever since.” She shares that her cancer diagnosis came as a surprise."I had an incredible support system. However, I only realised the enormity Continues on page 2

The European Union (EU) will support an upcoming study for the development of the Walvis Bay port, the entry point to the Walvis Bay – Maputo Corridor, one of the eleven Strategic Corridors the EU envisages to support as part of the EU-Africa Global Gateway Investment Package. Its location makes it a natural gateway for international trade to the Southern African Development Community, a region with over 300 million inhabitants. The European Union and Namibia have agreed on a strategic partnership focusing on sustainable raw materials and green hydrogen. The

partnership comes with a substantial €1 billion investment from the EU and its member states. The support of the study for the development of the Port of Walvis Bay, involves transforming it into a regional logistics and industrial hub for the green hydrogen and derivatives economy. This develop-

ment will enhance international trade and economic growth in the region. Namibia's commitment to the green transition aligns with the EU's aim to secure a sustainable supply of raw materials, particularly critical ones, for green and clean energy. The EU will also support the Namibian Ports Continues on page 2

Development of the Port Continued from page 1 Authority in achieving operational excellence. President of Namibia, Hage Geingob, and President of the European Commission Namibia, Ursula von der Leyen unveiled this partnership on the eve of the Global Gateway Forum. President Geingob said, “Thanks to its abundant renewable energy potential, Namibia is becoming a frontrunner in the green hydrogen space. The EU is proud to be a partner in this transformative journey towards green industrialisation. Together we can further decarbonise our economies, create jobs and ensure a more prosperous and greener future for our societies.” Ursula von der Leyen recognises that its world-class renewable energy resources provide a strong foundation upon which we will build a sustainable

and impactful green industrial base. Namibia is also cognisant that to fully capture the opportunity at hand, it will have to mobilise fit for purpose capital that appropriately prices risk to optimise the cost of said capital. This is a key element that will form the cornerstone of this transformative partnership with the EU. The roadmap for the years 2023 to 2025 outlines six key pillars, including value chain integration, environmental criteria, infrastructure funding, capacity building, research and innovation, and regulatory alignment. This strategic partnership will work closely with financial and private sector stakeholders to achieve these goals. The EU has established similar partnerships with other resource-rich countries, fostering secure and resilient raw materials value chains.

Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen said,” the expansion of the port of Walvis Bay to cater for the development of the emerging green hydrogen industry is a demonstration of mutually beneficial Global Gateway cooperation. We are strengthening sustainable value chains and strategic transport corridors in Africa and delivering on the green and digital transitions in both Namibia and the EU. The roadmap adopted today is a tangible follow up to January's discussions in Windhoek. It gives Team Europe members the framework to identify projects with high potential, mobilise investments and boost skills training along the renewable hydrogen and raw materials value chains.” Source: African Media Agency .

Community Members Asked to Meet Swakopmund Municipality Half-way Sharlien Tjambari in Combating Crime After consultations and engagements with various stakeholders and after hosting numerous meetings to address safety concerns in Swakopmund, the council hosted a feedback session this Tuesday in Mondesa to provide a platform for questions and answers and allow residents and stakeholders to gain insights into the initiatives that the council has developed to combat crime. The Chief Executive Officer of Swakopmund, Archie Benjamin said, “we want to bring all the stakeholders together, central government, ministries, non-governmental organisations, associations, neighbourhood watches, police etc., and identify all

these challenges that we are facing in town as they were identified in the first meeting. What the people must remember, when we come to these meetings, you, and I, in our individual capacity, in our capacity as an organisation, we must think- what can I do? What can our churches

do to address the issues of homelessness and hunger? What can the education ministry or municipality do?” According to Benjamin, the responsibility of the municipality was to bring people together through platforms like community meetings but there are many other responsibilities such as the placement of CCTV cameras in the town. Benjamin mentioned that during the last meeting, it was identified that there is a need to form neighbourhood watches, he encourages community members to come forward with suggestions or proposals on how they want to be involved in the fight against crime in the town and what they are willing to do to meet the municipality halfway. Currently, the community and stakeholders involved have identified that street children and men on the streets are a huge concern in Swakopmund which needs to be dealt with before it gets out of hand. Another issue that the stakeholders are looking at is the harvesting of mussels- whereby many people exceed the daily required number.

Facing the Giant: One Woman's of the disease once I lost all my hair a few days after my first red chemotherapy. When I went for my first chemo session, everyone referred to the red chemo as 'the red devil' (die rooi duiwel). Initially, I did not understand, but a few hours and the days thereafter, it became crystal clear why it was called the rooi duiwel. I had constant nausea, constant joint pain, and my emotions were all over the place. It was a difficult and, at times, very frustrating journey. It's very difficult to come to terms with the fact that your body, which was once strong, struggles to recover from the treatment. The longer the treatment became, the more I struggled. It's as if your body goes into survival mode, and you are constantly tired." FACING 'THE GIANT' Emily states that breast cancer was her Goliath, but it ignited the David within her. "I'm a firm believer that God will not allow something to happen to you without you having the strength and faith to overcome it. I had a lot of discussions with God, but I also believe (I still do to this day) everything happens for a reason, and every event teaches you something. Cancer showed me who my 'real people' were, the people who are in my corner and have my back; family, friends, relationships. I could distinguish between the people who were there for me wholeheartedly and others who were only there because it's the right thing to do. I had an amazing support system during my journey, and sometimes when I used to lose my positivity, my support system pulled me back up. Being positive is very important in a battle with cancer. I'm a very positive person and take everything on the chin. I had my difficult days, and most of the time, the difficult days outweighed the good days, but you cannot get lost in negativity and feeling sorry for yourself. No good can come from that.” 'MY SUPPORT SYSTEM KEPT ME SANE' She says that her immediate family, which is her parents and siblings, were not affected by her diagnosis. "They were the ones that kept me going. It was a challenge for me to realise that I was not able to do all the things that I could do

Continued from page 1

before the cancer treatment. I had little energy, and sometimes I just wanted to be left alone. My support system kept me sane. My support system saw the good, the bad, and the ugly, and they were there with me every step of the way. My support system carried me. I cannot even imagine what I would have done if I did not have them in my corner. During treatment, I felt like an ugly duckling. No hair, no eyebrows, and no eyelashes. For me as a woman, that was rough. My scars after the surgery took some time to get used to, but I have a tattoo that says, 'Wear your scars like wings.' I'm proud of each and every scar on my body. Cancer tried to destroy me and my body, but God came through. They are my scars, and I wear them with pride. My confidence came back once my hair grew back, and it sounds like a shallow thing to say, but I never realized how important my hair was to me. I quickly learned that hair does not define you; it does not define your personality. I now embrace my new hair and my 'new breasts.'” FINANCIALLY DRAINING Emily is still repaying the debt incurred during her cancer treatments. "Cancer treatment is extremely expensive. I was privileged to have medical aid. My significant debt came from my surgery in South Africa. My medical aid only paid out Namibian tariffs, so everything above that I was liable for. After my medical aid paid the bills, I was left with a debt of almost N$200 000 that I had to repay, of which I am still paying. I was not informed or prepared for this amount of debt. It places you under a lot of stress and uncertainty.” HARD REALITY She says that the hard reality of being diagnosed with breast cancer is that life as you know it will never be the same again. "You are never the same again. If everything is taken away from you, can you say that loyalty, integrity, passion, caring, love for God, and love cling to you? I am a new person, and I got a new chance at life. Lots of scars though, but scars are beautiful when we see them as glorious reminders of what we courageously survived." (*not her real name)

Walvis Bay Municipality Engages in Economic Development Strategy Plan Rudi Bowe

The Municipality of Walvis Bay recently held a Stakeholder Engagement on the Local Economic Development (LED) Strategic Implementation Plan in the town. The engagement signifies the municipality's initial step in addressing pivotal questions, marking the commencement of the crafting of the LED Strategic Implementation Plan. This plan, once realised, will propel the municipality toward achieving the LED's primary objective, namely enhancing the town's competitiveness on the global stage. The LED served as an initial step in addressing important questions, and marked the start of crafting the strategy's implementation plan. Acting Chief Executive Officer at the Municipality of Walvis Bay, John Esterhuizen said, “in our pursuit of sustainable and resilient economic development, the Municipal Council of Walvis Bay has strategically positioned itself with a clear objective in its 2021-2025 Strategic Plan.” According to Esterhuizen, Walvis Bay is taking the necessary steps in realising its dream of becoming one of the most competitive cities in Africa. Esterhuizen, said, “the first object in the Strategic Plan objective outlines key initiatives to create a conducive business environment, incorporating an enhanced service delivery strategy to attract investors and foster economic and employment opportunities. This vision has led to the formulation of the Walvis Bay Local Economic Development Strategy for 2023-2028.The LED strategy aims at crafting initiatives that will address identified challenges, opportunities and aspirations and turn them into

realistic, achievable futures.” According to Esterhuizen, for the next five years, the municipality will work closely with developmental partners, the private sector and all spheres of the government to ensure that the strategic intervention highlighted in the strategies are carried out and brings about the desired development for the town. “The municipality plans to pursue programmes to create an ideal environment to foster business growth. It will then market investment opportunities at Walvis Bay and ensure that the town makes the list of the top 10 African 'Cities of Opportunity' by 2033,” he said. Esterhuizen highlighted the town's position in the energy sectors of green hydrogen, oil and gas. He added that the municipality's focus is on ensuring that infrastructure and regulatory frameworks are robust enough to attract significant business and investments in the energy sector while concurrently fostering complementary sectors and sustaining the growth of existing industries. “Although the town's economy has thrived in fishing, tourism and logistics for the past three decades, changing dynamics need transformation in order to maintain relevance around the world,” he noted. “Our long-term vision for Walvis Bay is ambitious – to be listed among the Global Competitive Cities for Jobs and Growth by 2033,” Esterhuizen concluded.

Erongo Business and Tourism Expo in Full Swing Leandrea Mouers

The 15th edition of the Erongo Business and Tourism Expo is in full swing at the Walvis Bay Municipality premises. The expo, which kicked off on Wednesday, is set to conclude tomorrow at 22:00 with entertainment. The Mayor of Walvis Bay, Trevino Forbes, stated that the council celebrates events like these because they allow SMEs a platform for exhibiting products and services, as well as promoting and encouraging public dialogue on challenges faced by the business fraternity and the communities. "It's an opportunity to promote the valuable assets of the region such as mining, tourism, fishing, marine, and other resources and allows sponsors to highlight and promote services offered in Namibia, SADC, and the rest of the world." He added that for Walvis Bay, tourism means jobs and business opportunities for SMEs. "If properly managed and coordinated, it can also mean the renewal of urban and rural areas and the preservation and promotion of natural resources and cultural heritage. Tourism is a customer-driven industry. As a country, a region, and a town, we need to improve our customer service to ensure our tourists and investors come back time and again. By offering efficient and effective customer service, you guarantee that your service secures you more business. Walvis Bay is strategically located in Namibia's economic region. I think it is fair to say that we are unique in the types of industries and markets we operate in. Economically, it is these events that make our town alive with many opportunities." He encouraged local authorities to do their best and make the different towns and cities conducive for investment. "By doing so, we will facilitate job creation and SME growth. Recently, several companies called upon my office for assistance as they find it very difficult, especially when it comes to the issuing of documentation like visas and work permits. I humbly call upon the relevant ministries to do their part in realising Namibia's true economic potential; it is small things such as this that discourage investment." Governor of the Erongo region, Neville Andre, on behalf of the Minister of Trade and Industrialisation, Lucia Iipumba, added that integration plays a crucial role in today's globalised world. "This allows us to tap into new markets, expand our reach, and create mutually beneficial partnerships. By integrating our industries with regional and international markets, we can leverage economies of scale, access new technologies, and enhance competitiveness. Integration also promotes knowledge transfer and fosters collaboration among businesses, leading to increased productivity

and innovation." He said that industrialisation is another key driver of economic growth and development. "By building a strong industrial base, we can create jobs, reduce poverty, and enhance the standard of living for our citizens. Industrialisation allows us to add value to our natural resources through processing and manufacturing activities. It also encourages technological advancements and innovation by fostering research and development initiatives. In today's context, industrialisation goes beyond traditional manufacturing. It encompasses the digital transformation of industries, the adoption of automation and artificial intelligence, and the development of sustainable practices. It's not just about mass production; it is about leveraging technology to create value in a rapidly changing world." Andre said that investing in vocational training and skill development programs is key as it will equip the Namibian workforce with the necessary expertise to thrive in the industrial sector. "Innovation, as per this year's Erongo Business and Tourism Expo's theme, is the driving force behind sustainable economic growth. Innovation enables us to adapt to changing market dynamics, improve productivity, and create new opportunities. Embracing innovation requires fostering a culture of creativity, entrepreneurship, and continuous learning.” "To foster innovation, we must create an environment that encourages experimentation and rewards bold ideas. This means investing in research and development, supporting startups and entrepreneurs, and promoting collaboration between academia, industry, and government. By nurturing a culture of innovation, we can unlock the full potential of human ingenuity and drive progress in all areas of society." He said that the government recognises the crucial role that the private sector plays in driving economic development, and by partnering with the business community, it can leverage their expertise, resources, and networks to create mutually beneficial opportunities for growth and prosperity. "The Erongo Business and Tourism Expo serves as a platform for local businesses to showcase their products and services to local, regional, and global audiences, attracting potential investors, and facilitating partnerships that can lead to increased exports and foreign direct investment."

Swakopmund Rotary Club Joins Global Effort to Eradicate Polio on World Polio Day Eileen van der Schyff

This past Tuesday marked World Polio Day, a day dedicated to the global fight against polio, and the Rotary Club of Swakopmund made a significant contribution to this important cause. Under the guidance of President Kathryn McLean, the Swakopmund Rotary Club, in partnership with Rotary clubs worldwide, took centre stage in the creative efforts to eliminate this crippling disease that primarily affects young children. Polio, scientifically known as poliomyelitis, is a perilous illness transmitted through contaminated water sources, often leading to paralysis. The urgency to eliminate it cannot be overstated. World Polio Day, celebrated annually on 24 October, serves as a rallying point for communities worldwide to unite against polio. Rotary members put their heads together to come up with inventive and captivating ideas to boost awareness and funding for the eradication of polio. The Swakopmund Rotary Club, in collaboration with the founders of NGOs Mondesa Youth Opportunities (MYO) with the guidance of their Manager and Rotarian Anke Husemeyer, and DRC School Project & Community Centre (led by Tangeni Shilongo Namibia), involved their children and youth in an awareness-raising campaign. Mr Volkan Sazli, a Rotary member and Founder and Director of the Non-Profit Association Tangeni Shilongo Namibia, shared, "we have represented the red drop, which stands for the oral polio vaccination." The red drop was symbolised by children dressed in red, forming the shape of a droplet, representing the importance of oral polio vaccination. Sazli emphasised Rotary's longstanding commitment to the eradication of polio, spanning over 35 years. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary International has made remarkable progress, reducing polio cases by a staggering 99.9% since their first vaccination project in the Philippines in 1979. Rotary members worldwide, including those from the Swakopmund Rotary Club, have contributed over USD 2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this

paralysing disease. Rotary's advocacy efforts have played a pivotal role in governments contributing more than USD 10 billion to the cause. Presently, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It remains crucial to persevere to keep other countries free from polio. If eradication efforts halted today, polio could paralyse up to 200 000 children each year within a decade. Around the globe, various creative initiatives were launched to raise awareness and funds for the fight against polio. In Germany, Bashar Asfour, a member of the Rotary Club of Tbilisi Ambassador, embarked on a European tour, raising awareness and gathering donations. His journey concluded in Chemnitz, Germany, on 20 and 21 October, aligning with the main Rotary event for World Polio Day in the region. In Brazil, the Rotary clubs introduced the "Together Against Polio" campaign, which utilised billboards, leaflets, and social media graphics to combat the disease. This comprehensive campaign featured verified information from health organisations, promoting vaccination nationwide. The Rotary Club of Antananarivo-Mahamasina in Madagascar organised the sixth Urban Trail, raising awareness about the PolioPlus program and vaccination's importance. This initiative, in collaboration with UNICEF, WHO, and others, coincided with African Vaccination Week. In France, the T-Rex Race in Fréjus adopted a playful approach. Participants donned tyrannosaurus rex costumes to raise awareness and funds for polio eradication. Organised by District 1730, this event embodied Rotary's dedication to a polio-free world. Colombian Rotarians Sonia Uribe and

Alberto Londoño launched "El Zoo del Amor" to provide comfort to terminally ill children. The project raised approximately USD 260 000, destined for polio eradication efforts and vaccinations for over 76 000 children, nurturing children's lives and contributing to a polio-free world. In the Philippines, Rotary clubs came together for a dinner event that celebrated fine dining while supporting the "End Polio Now" campaign. Renowned chefs prepared dishes, raising funds for the cause. On the Korean island of Jeju, Rotary members organised a traditional gugak music concert, raising USD 12 000 for the PolioPlus Fund. In Japan's Chiba prefecture, Rotary members orchestrated a vibrant parade coinciding with the Oyako Sandai Festival,

combining celebration and purpose to raise awareness for a polio-free world. Finally, Italian Rotarians and their friends from District 2080 worked on a crucial vaccination campaign in Uttar Pradesh, India, as part of the National Immunisation Day initiative. This campaign garnered significant participation from women in the region, underscoring their consistent support for global polio vaccination efforts. These creative initiatives are driving global awareness and support for the ultimate goal of eliminating this debilitating disease. Resident Warns Community About Dog Slaughtering Sharlien Tjambari for Consumption in DRC John Botho (56) a resident of DRC was devastated and angry when he visited the Namib Times office in Swakopmund on Wednesday this week, to share how his dog, Susana was killed the previous day by his neighbour. Botho who is a registered car guard wants to warn residents of Swakopmund, especially dog owners about people who slaughter and eat dogs for kapana in the DRC informal settlement. Botho narrated, “On Tuesday around 12:00 I received a text message from his neighbour telling me to go home, I ignored it. Later at around 13:00 he sent me another message instructing me to take a taxi and go home, so I took a taxi and went home and when I got home my neighbour told me that someone had taken my dog and showed me where my dog, Susana was.” Botho said he found his neighbour, a certain Matheus,

beating his dog with a big stick and the dog died. Botho allegedly asked Matheus why he took Susana and all Mathias could say was that the dog was eating his chickens. Upon hearing the commotion, Botho's neighbours allegedly came to Susana's rescue and said they had never seen Susana eating chicken. Botho took Susana to the Mondesa police station to open a case against Matheus for stealing and killing his dog. He managed to open a case and two police officers accompanied him to Matheus's place and arrested Matheus. Matheus appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrate Court on Wednesday.

Dog Bite Incidents on the Increase - ISSUED BY THE PR DIVISION OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF WALVIS BAYThe Municipality's Health Division has noted a significant increase in the number of dog bite incidents reported in the Kuisebmond residential area, in recent years. This escalating trend is becoming a concern not only for the victims but also for the community as a whole. It is crucial to understand the underlying factors contributing to this issue in order to take the necessary steps to address it effectively. REASON FOR THE RISING NUMBER OF DOG BITES · Lack of responsibility by the dog owner. Many dog owners fail to properly keep their dogs under control or train their dogs. · Irresponsible pet ownership can also neglect to provide essential veterinary care such as vaccinations and spaying / neutering. · Inadequate enforcement of existing laws and regulations. Stray dogs pose a significant public health concern due to the potential transmission of rabies. Rabies, a viral disease that affects the central nervous system, is primarily transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. If left untreated, rabies is almost always fatal in humans. Stray dogs, lacking proper care and supervision, are more likely to contract and spread this deadly diseas. THE PUBLIC IS HEREBY REMINDED OF THE FOLLOWING STIPULATIONS OUTLINED IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF WALVIS BAY REGULATIONS RELATING TO THE KEEPING OF DOGS: 1. All dogs must be licensed with the Municipality of Walvis Bay. Dog licenses are available from cashier desks at any of the Municipality's three offices. These licences are renewable annually between 1 January and 31 March and expire on 31 December of every year. 2. Dogs are not allowed to roam freely and must be kept

within the owner's property or on a leash when in public areas. The owner whose dog bites a person on the street can face severe consequences, including liability for the medical expenses and payment of compensation to that injured person. In addition, the dog in question may have to be removed and put down by the officials of the Council. In order for you to be permitted to keep a dog, it is necessary that the house you currently reside in possesses a well-constructed boundary wall and functional gates surrounding your property. 1. Dogs must be vaccinated against rabies and other contagious diseases as required by the municipality. The Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Forestry, in collaboration with the Walvis Bay Municipality Health Division, conducts an annual vaccination campaign against rabies. 2. Any incidents involving dog bites or attacks must be reported to the municipality immediately. I took a moment to investigate the definition of “invest”. One of the definitions I liked, reads as follows: “to put money, effort, time, etc. into something to make a profit or get an advantage in the future.” I will add my personal spin to this and add “to have fun in future”. One of my fondest memories as a child is from the first time I rode the “super tube” when it was still near to the Mole in Swakopmund. It took a lot of physical effort chasing up the stairs. It was, however, easy, as I could see the goal in front of me and I knew that I was going to have some fabulous fun! Today that space along the beachfront no longer sports a world class swimming pool and neither a ride of a lifetime. For those that are old enough will remember those very steep stairs leading up in a circular manner to the top of the tube. The physical effort of climbing to the top would sometimes also coincide with some bruises and scares as steps are missed and over eagerness with reaching the top took hold in most young minds. Off course once you reach the top a real feeling of achievement sets in and to an extent you feel like you are on top of the world. That feeling of achievement is what makes that slide to the bottom so much more exciting and euphoric. In many respects the right way to invest has a very similar path to success as that super tube that requires some work before reaping the rewards of that labour. The fact is, investing is always a form of present sacrifice for future benefit. Investing is easy when the goal is clear (like seeing the top of the super tube). It only gets hard when one loses the vision of “WHY” you are investing. Typically, patience runs out and gratification is

required immediately. This is especially true in today's information starved communities. To illustrate this principle, I had a look at our local retailer and saw that a “basic” energy drink would cost me N$20. Assuming I drink five energy drinks per week, I would end up spending N$5 196 on energy drinks per year. Now, had I chosen to rather take the same money and invest in a Money Market Fund on a monthly basis, such as the one marketed by Arysteq, I would have earned an additional N$220. That is 11 free energy drinks! Now imagine for a minute that you can apply this principle over more than a year with cash that you divert away from larger “immediate wants” to “future fun benefits”! Thus, patience and discipline will bring great benefits in future and as Paul Samuelson is quoted as saying: "Investing should be more like watching paint dry or watching grass grow. If you want excitement, take $800 and go to Las Vegas." In a world where everything happens quickly and is accessible in an instant, it is still the art of having discipline that will see you reach your financial goals and maybe even take that trip to Las Vegas! If you are keen on guidance around investments and how to plan a suitable financial future do not hesitate to speak to your financial adviser or contact clients@arysteq.com to schedule a consultation.
