Eastweather Batters Coast
Eileen van der Schyff
The coast has been experiencing intense eastweather conditions (also known as berg winds) this week, resulting in strong easterly winds and dusty weather. These conditions are driven by the formation of cold frontsovermainlandSouthAfrica, whichleadtocolderweatheracross muchoftheSouthAfricaninterior.Asthesecoldwindsmovetowardsthe coast, theywarmup, creatingthecharacteristicbergwindconditions.
The impact of these windshasbeenvisible along the coast, with stunning photo by Landwater capturing the beauty of the dust tongues sweeping into the ocean. Despite the inconvenience caused by the dusty conditions, thewindshave also brought some remarkable natural phenomenatothefore. The turquoise plank-
ton near the mouth of the Orange River has become more visible. This plankton bloom, evident in the greenish shimmer across other parts of the ocean, is a sign of a thriving marine ecosystem Planktonplaysacrucial role in the ocean's food web, providing sustenance for marine life and producing oxygen fortheatmosphere. The
eastweather conditions are expected to ease by the weekend, with forecasts predicting a returntocolderweather Residents and visitors are advised to take necessary precautions during this period of strong winds and dust on the coastal B2 road with heaps of sand piling up on the road surface.
Henties Bay to Establish Sea Rescue Service and Kiddies Play Park
Eileen van der Schyff
Henties Bay is set to launch a new sea rescue service following a tragic drowning incident last December. On 15 December 2023, Ngo Mbok Marie France Brockerhoff, also known as "Mimi," drowned while attempting to rescue her aunt, Rashmi Brockerhoff, who was overpowered by strong waves. Both girls perished in full view of beachgoers.
Thissparkedtheurgent need for improved safety measures In response to this heartwrenching event, the MbokFamilyTrusthas spearheaded the establishment of the Henties Bay Sea Rescue Service (HBSRS). This initiative aims to provide lifeguard and sea rescue services to
preventfuturetragedies on the town's beaches.
The HBSRS will be a Section 21 non-profit organisation, overseen by a board comprising members from the municipality, theMbok family, and the local community The Henties Bay Municipal Council has expressed unanimous support for
the project. The council's resolution No C024/23/05/2024/03rd /2024, passed in May thisyear, haspavedthe way for the incorporation of the HBSRS. T

This alarming trend raises urgent concerns about the future of this iconic seabird, known for its distinctiveblackandwhiteplumageandendearing waddle. According to Lüderitz Marine Research, the plight of the African penguin in Namibia has worsened significantly due to historical and ongoing threats. The initial decline began in the 1800sduringtheguanorush,whichdestroyedvital breeding habitats. The introduction of industrial pelagic fishing in the 1960s further decimated the penguin population by depleting sardine stocks, a primary food source for these birds. Despite conservation efforts initiated in the late 1980s, including the establishment of the Namibian Islands Marine Protected Area (NIMPA) in 2009, the population continues to plummet. Lüderitz MarineResearchsaidnewthreats, suchasthebird flu outbreak in 2019, have exacerbated the situation. The Halifax Island penguin population was significantly impacted, and ongoing challengeslikeoilingevents, harmfulalgalblooms, andpredationbyroguefursealspersist.Effortsby organisations like NAMCOB aim to address these issues, but the penguin population's decline has accelerated, and urgent intervention is crucial. Erastus Uutoni commendedtheHentiesBay Municipality for invitingexpertswithdiverse expertise in finance, land management, development planning, infrastructure development and financing, affordable housing delivery, and publicprivate project management They aim to explore innovative approaches to sustainable and responsible land development During the official opening of the land conference, Calle Schlettwein, the Minister ofAgriculture, WaterAndLandReform said according to Preliminary 2023 Census Report, in 2023, the urban population for Namibiawas54.9%,or 1 659298 individuals now live in urban settlements Over the last 50 years, urban population of Namibia grew substantially from 23.4 to 54.9 % rising at an increasing annual rate that reached a maximum of 2.79% in 2003andthendecreased to1.72%in2023. According to Uutoni, Namibia, like many developing countries, faces high rates of unemployment and poverty, exacerbated by economic downturns and the COVID-19 pandemic He stated, "As a result, we have seen increased ruralurban migration, leadingtoaproliferationof
informal settlements in urban areas, accounting for approximately forty percent (40%), compared to approximately eleven percent (11%) in ruralareas."Uutonialso highlighted that Namibia currently has a national housing backlogestimatedat300000 units, with 70% of this backlog affecting the lowest income categories who cannot access credit from financial institutions.Preliminary estimates suggest an annual requirement of about 30 000 housing unitsfrom2023to2030. solutions for affordable serviced land and adequate housing." Uutoni added, "it is equally important that participants leave the conference with tangible and implementable interventions." He noted challenges faced by Henties Bay and other local authorities, including illegal land occupation and ruralurban migration, urging proactive initiatives to tackle these issues. In a speech delivered by Chairperson of the Erongo Regional Council, Neville Andre Itope, on behalf of Uutoni, theGovernorof E r o n g o R e g i o n emphasised that during the conference, participants would examine case studies, share experiences, and collaborate on formulating policies to support sustainable growth
Itope stressed, "sustainable development is not just about economic growth; it is about building resilient, inclusive communities capable of providing a high quality of life for all residents " He concluded,"Byworking together, wecancreatea future where Henties Baythrivesnotonlyasa hub of economic activitybutalsoasamodel of sustainable and equitable development."
