Fuel price decreases in June

TheMinistryofMinesandEnergyhasreleasedthefuelpricereviewforthemonth ofJune2023,statingthatthepricesofoilareexperiencingsignificantshort-term declines.Thesedeclinesareprimarilyduetoongoingdemandconcernscausedby thestrengtheningoftheUnitedStatesDollar.Theministrypredictsthatoilprices will continue to fall as the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is not expected to further reduce its overall output in the upcoming meetingonJune4,2023.

While the Russian Federation does not anticipate any major developments from OPEC+ at the upcoming meeting, Saudi Arabia has hinted at the possibility of another round of production cutstosupportrising oil prices. However, oil prices could rebound if signifiant oil production cuts are introduced by OPEC+ and if the US economy proves to be more resilient than expected.

WhenRent-A-Drumstartedwiththe Swakopmund Sorting plant, their household target was 76 tons per month.Woensdregtsaid,since2015 the recycling plant recycled an

average of 127 tons per month, whereby the households of Swakopmundcontributesanaverageof (58tonspermonth/46%).Rent-ADrum has recycled and diverted 5 326 tons of household waste from October2016toJanuary2023from thelandfillsite. The ministry's calculations reveal a significant decrease in the average prices of Unleaded Petrol 95 andDiesel50ppmand 10ppm over May 2023 compared to April2023.

The average price for Unleaded Petrol 95 is USD92.118 per barrel, down from USD102.374 per barrelinApril.Theaverage price for Diesel 50ppm is USD85.765 per barrel, compared to USD96 514 per barrel previously, while the average price for Diesel 10ppm is USD87.300 per barrel, a decrease from USD10 per barrelinApril.

Additionally, the Na-

mibian Dollar (NAD) hasdepreciatedagainst the US Dollar, with an exchange rate of N$18.9242 per USD from N$18.1625 per USDinApril.

Considering these factors, the ministry has recorded over-recoveries on petrol and both dieselproducts. Specifically,thereisan over-recovery of 4 centsperlitreonpetrol and over-recoveries of 136 cents per litre on diesel 50ppm and 118 centsperlitreondiesel 10ppm.

As a result, the Ministry announced that petrol prices will remain unchanged, whilethepriceofDiesel 50ppm will decrease by 80 cents per litreandDiesel10ppm by60centsperlitre.

Consequently, the petrol prices in WalvisBaywillremainat N$19 78 per litre, while the prices of Diesel 50ppm will be N$19.05 per litre and Diesel 10ppm will be N$19.25perlitre.

The ministry has adjusted the petrol and diesel basic prices to accommodate the increase in road user charges,ensuringthat petrol prices remain unchanged. Theeffectivedatefor these adjustments is Wednesday, June 7, 2023,at00:01.

The Ministry expresses optimism that the market will continue to be favourable, resultinginlowerfuel prices for consumers, particularly for net fuel importing countrieslikeNamibia.

The Minister of Mines addressed the National Petroleum LocalContent(LCP)Workshop,emphasisingthepotential ofrecentoilandgasdiscoveriesintransformingNamibia's economybeyondtaxesandroyalties,inWindhoekrecently.

Alweendo highlighted the need to ensure that the country's citizens benefit andgeneratein-countryvaluefromtheexploitationofoilandgasresources. Alweendo acknowledged the critical role of strong institutions, a stable politicalsystem,andaneffectivelegalframeworkinmanagingoilrevenue forpositiveeconomicimpacts.HeexpressedconfidenceinNamibia'sinstitutions, political system, and legal framework, stating, “the oil discovery could be a blessing rather than a curse” if resources were managed with a long-termperspective.

MTC Stands Firm on Biometric Data Capture for SIM Registrations

Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) has responded to the announcement made by the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) regarding SIM registrationsandbiometricdatacapture.

In a statement issued by Tim Ekandjo, the Corporate andMarketingOfficer of MTC, the company acknowledges CRAN's noticeandexpresses its alignment with CRAN's considerations However, MTC emphasises that its biometric "Verify"processisa crucial tool for customer authenticity and enhanced security against cyber and online fraud

The "Verify" process,whichincludes biometric data capture, aims to offer additional security measures and combatfraudandcrime.

MTC also highlights that this pro-

cess provides convenience for customersinmanagingtheir profiles with the company So far, the response from the public regarding the registration process, particularly the biometric aspect, has been positive. MTC reports that a total of 1,002,032 SIM cards have been registeredtodate.

MTC firmly states that itwillcontinuetooffer the biometric process as a condition of service to its customers.

The company believes in the importance of this measure to safeguard customer information and prevent fraudulent activities

By implementing biometric data capture,

MTC aims to provide a more secure and reliable telecommunicationsservice.

Shifeta urges African youth to embrace innovation

During the opening of the 5th Africa Youth in Tourism Innovation Summit and Challenge 2023, the Minister of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta urged allAfrican youth to embrace innovation, and digital disruptivechangeandharnesstheirpotentialtosucceedin thetourismsector.

Themed, “Developing Youth and innovative entrepreneurship solution for inclusive tourism recovery in Africa", the summit kicked off in Swakopmund on Wednesday this week. The Summit is a pan-African youthinitiativethatwasintroducedby the dynamic youth ofAfrica in 2019, inDurban,SouthAfrica.Itservesasa voice for the youth and emerging enterprises in tourism, travel, hospitality, aviation, and all related industries with the sole objective to connect, engage, learn, innovate, and grow themselves, their businesses, and the entire travel & tourism economyoftheAfricancountries. Moreover, it is established to nurture African youth, small enterprises, and introduce accelerator initiatives to pursue opportunities in the evergrowing travel & tourism ecosystem. YoungpeopleofAfrica,therefore,aim to become transformational industry change-makers and immediate future leaders of this important and profitable global travel and tourism sector

The Government of the Republic of Namibia is a member state of United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). Namibia thus subscribes and supports the UNWTOAgenda of Africa that positions tourism at the centre stage for inclusive growth to optimise the sector's contribution to sustainable and inclusive developmentoftheAfricanContinentatlarge. According to Shifeta, last year' 4th edition of the Africa Youth in Tourism Innovation Summit and Challenge which was hosted in Windhoek and for the first time in Namibia created greater awareness of the importance of the tourism economyanditsmultipliereffectson other industries and how the sector can positively and directly impact livelihoods; It provided a greater insighttohighschoolanduniversity graduates participating in different career paths in the tourism sector; and the summit exposed the Namibian youth to employment opportunities within the sector through networking, market access, and insights into Africa Tourism Supply Chain, as well as new and evolving digital solutions and innovativewaysofdoingbusiness,to Namibia and the youth of Africa.

Shifeta further said, “we hope and trust that the youth of Namibia and Africaatlargehasandwillcaptivate and optimise these lessons learned from last year's summit and seize opportunities in the tourism and digitalspace.”

Shifeta reminded the African youth that they are the true and reflective ambassadors of change in African society and tourism economies

In teams of three, each consisting of a writer, illustrator and graphic designer and children's and young adult author Nasrin Siege as editor for 4 all teams, four books were created in Windhoek in 12 hoursofjointwork, which may be published free of charge. Coastal boys selected for national teams

TheNamibianHighSchoolsRugbyAssociation(NSSR)recentlyannouncedthe92 namesoftheunder12,13,16and18rugbyplayersthatwillrepresentthecountry attheprestigiousprovincialrugbyweeksinSouthAfrica.

Twenty of these young rugby players, and two school rugby coaches are from different schools in the Erongo region. The under 12 team will participate in an Inter-Provincial tournament in Klerksdorp, South Africa whilst the under 13 team will compete in the U/13 Craven Week SchoolsRugbytournamentfrom25to30Juneat Maritzburg College in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.Theunder16teamwillcompeteintheSA U16GrantKhomoWeekfrom25-30JuneatPaul RoosGymnasiuminStellenbosch,andtheunder 18 team will compete in the SA under 18 Academy Week from 3 to 8 July at Jeppe High SchoolinJohannesburg.

WhatstartedoutasachallengebetweenafewoftheschoolsatWalvisBayGolf Club ended in a full-blooded event drawing 75 players which is thought to be a recordentryfortheclub.

Fifteenteamsfivemanandorladiesperteamstarted at9:30tobattleitoutforthetoppriceattheBATTLE of THE SCHOOL's Golf championship. All the playersweresplitintovariousfivehandteetimesso thattheresultswerenotknownuntiltheveryendof play

The winners of the BATTLE of THE SCHOOL's were the Erongo Boys team of Dean Kock, Des Benson, Mario Polster, Monde Sevelus and Warren Therononamammoth171pointsfollowedbyThe4 Jacks and a Jill team of Peet Poggenpoel,Wilma de Wet, Tienie de Wet, Henjan van Hyde and Wynand Breytenbachon161points.

TheindividualprizeswenttoFrancoisBinneman40 points,DevillDreyer39pointswinningthecountout from Pieter Fox also on 39 points. Wynand Breytenbach was 4th on 37 points and Wayne Hart roundeduptheprizeson36points.

There were two team prizes, five individual prizes andtwoclosesttothepinson2/11and18.

There were 10 two clubs registered on the day each earningN$50fortheirefforts.

There was a best dressed team award which was dubiously won by the boys in pink aka the Monkey

Walvis victorious at NALASRA Games

The game that ended last week Friday saw the Municipality of Walvis Bay win the competition, followed by Swakopmund Municipality with the CityofWindhoekthird overall out of 42 participating local authorities The Municipality ofWalvis Bay was victorious in Owela singles and doubles, fishing, pool d o u b l e s , 1 0 k m marathon for over 40 menandwomenwhilst Swakopmund claimed victory in the Mixed Volleyball, Golf and Tug of War categories with Arandis triumphant in the 100m and 200m under 40 female categories.

NALASRA President, Daniel Mouton said despite the intense

competition, the event served as a crucial p l a t f o r m f o r highlighting the importance of mental health, with the local authorities making substantial efforts to implement mental health programs Mouton said, “the record-breaking entrees of 42 local authorities saw a wonderful week ofcompetition,camaraderie, friendship and networkingbetweenthe participants.” According to Mouton NALASRA executive will start with wellness programs at all 57 local authorities in the country “The aim is to establishwellnessclubs at the local authorities and to make sure that a wellness activity be heldmonthlyatthelocal

authorities. He echoed that NALASRA will grow into a brand that will be known for the nexttentotwentyyears. “We only received bids from three local authorities that want to host the games next year We would like to encourage all local authorities, especially the smaller ones to put in their bids as the executive would like the smaller ones to host the games,” Mouton said.

He added that the NALASRA executive will announce within the next two months where the next games will be held. Mouton congratulated the Municipality of Walvis th Bay
