Baboon on the loose at container depot
Eileen van der Schyff Workers had the surprise of their lives at a container yard in Walvis Bay yesterday morning, when a baboon emerged from a container that had just been offloaded from a truck. The baboon was later captured by Mr. Naudé Dreyer, a local who have distinguished himself at various occasions in the past in rescuing stranded whales, dolphins, seals and now a baboon added to the list. It is believed the animal entered the container when it was loaded in Zambia or just before it was inspected and sealed. Fortunately, there are no signs the animal was smuggled. It is further believed the animal spent at least a week in the sealed container without food and water between Zambia and Walvis Bay.
When workers opened the container yesterday morning, the baboon ran out. The confusion that followed scared the animal even more, and it made a dash for a block of containers some 100 metres away. It made use of the small spaces between the containers to hide and evade capture. When Namib Times visited the scene, his scared

inside President Geingob Wrong to brief Namibia on turn by Covid-19 situation trucker
President Hage Geingob and Health Minister Dr. Kalumbi Shangula are scheduled to address Namibia at 15:00 this afternoon from State House in Windhoek, over Namibia’s Covid-19 situation. The President’s address and that of Dr. Shangula can be viewed live on NBC 1 and on the Facebook profile of the Presidency. It remains a realistic possibility that interregional traveling would resume, seating at restaurants, extended hours of alcohol trading and larger gatherings would be reinstated in the new dispensation that resumes at one minute to midnight tomorrow, Saturday 31 July 2021.

That will assist international tourism to regain trust in the country as a safe travel destination. Furthermore, strong Government leadership is needed to work with the private sector to recover the industry. Government also needs to conduct a detailed survey of the tourism sector and take critical decisions in how to provide financial assistance to the industry. “Recovery is most likely to take several years’, the report concludes.

Continues from page 1 little face was visible from among the containers. Very soon the baboon crept into one of the forklift channels beneath the container. When Mr. Naudé Dreyer, assisted by officials of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, arrived at the container yard, the baboon had made another dash for a block of containers further away. This time around the baboon made for the top of the containers first before again vanishing into the small spaces. Mr. Dreyer dropped the little fellow a banana which it eagerly devoured. First a rope was lowered into the space with the hope the baboon would climb out of the crevice and be captured. No success. A next plan worked. A forklift moved the one container just enough to make space for a capturing net to be lowered over the animal. The baboon is now in the care of a local vet where it recovers from its hunger, thirst and shock. Plans are to locate the most likely spot in Zambia where it climbed into the container, in order to bring it back to that exact spot and be reunited with its troop. Baboons by their very nature do not accept nonbelongers to the troop and would most likely kill it if released locally. Below: the little rascal spotted among the containers and then safely into the net. A vet is looking after it and soon it will go back to Zambia.
German donation of medical supplies to assist Namibia in the fight against Covid-19
The Federal Republic of Germany, one of Namibia’s main international partners, has donated ventilators and all relevant equipment, pulse oxymetres, and PCR test kits to the Namibian Ministry of Health and Social Services. The donated equipment will take Namibia far in its fight to get the better of the Covid-19 pandemic. Germany has so far made a number of donations to Namibia to fight Covid19. The total commitment so far is N$190 million. The hand over of the equipment took place in Windhoek recently.

Walvis Bay has three vaccination points Rudi Bowe
A Covid-19 vaccinations centre was established at the Evangelical Lutheran Church Hall in Narraville in Walvis Bay on Tuesday. The pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Narraville, Pastor Mark Beukes, was the driving force behind this vaccinations centre. He said it was important to roll actions out into the community, leading to the decision to make the church premises available as a vaccination centre. “The church saw a need to reach out to the community and thus made the church hall available to assist Government with the vaccination campaign in the Region. We brought this vaccination centre right to the doorstep of our community", said pastor Beukes. Adding: “It is indeed good news and a wonderful day for the people of Walvis Bay, as about 45 persons were vaccinated on the first day”. At the time of going to press yesterday afternoon approximately one hundred people were vaccinated at this new centre. Pastor Beukes himself has already received his vaccine against Covid-19. "I feel good, I feel protected. I also experience a great deal of calm. I do not come to persuade anyone, but rather to encourage. Please consider this and come in
large numbers. The goal is to vaccinate the Region's people to reach herd immunity. What a pleasant feeling would it be for our church if we could contribute to the success of the vaccination campaign against Covid-19 pandemic", said Pastor Beukes. Pastor Beukes could not say for how long the vaccination centre will be in existence, as this is determined by the Ministry of Health and Social Services. “I call upon the community to make use of the opportunity to receive their Covid-19 vaccines. It is the right thing to do, and together we will beat this pandemic and return our lives to normal”, he concluded. Note: only the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine is currently available, as Government is yet to roll out the next batch of AstraZeneca. Many Namibians have only received their first dose of AstraZeneca up to now, running several weeks overdue for the second shot. Covid-19 vaccines are administered at this point from Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 16:00 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church Hall in Narraville, the Kuisebmond Health Centre (Haart Clinic) and at the Walvis Bay MediPark (next to Pathcare).
Church urges community to get their Covid-19 vaccines
Members of the community wasted little time to make use of the new vaccination point in Narraville earlier this week. All you need to bring along is your identity card, friendly staff at the centre explained.

Swakopmund Round Table assists the community Eileen van der Schyff
The Swakopmund Round Table extends their gratitude towards the town's community for their continuous support towards the service organisation in their efforts to assist the town’s less fortunate. As part of the Swakopmund Round Table Winter Knights Campaign, Cllr Ciske Smith Howard facilitated the handover of 80 much needed blankets to the Swakopmund State Hospital [The hospital has a shortage of linen and patients are required to bring their own linen]. Without the openheartedness and generosity of the community, the annual Winter Knights Campaign would not have been possible. On the same day, the campaign also handed over 40 blankets to Ciske's Task Force for the temporary field hospital that is being set up for members of the community who are unable to access the hospitals. Swakopmund Round Table can be contacted should anyone have old clothes, blankets or food to donate, that will be distributed to the community.

Swakop Uranium donates to the fight against COVID-19
Namibia is currently hit by a third wave of COVID-19, which has already claimed the lives of many Namibians. As the number of daily new infections rose, it placed tremendous pressure on Namibian medical and emergency response facilities. In response to the deteriorating COVID-19 situation in Namibia and the dire shortage of medical and emergency supplies, the Namibian Chamber of Commerce and Industry together with the Chamber of mines coordinated a unified approach to assist in this time of need. Swakop Uranium, through Swakop Uranium Foundation, pledges its support towards the call of donations. Swakop Uranium has pledged to donate over 2 million Namibian Dollars' worth of Oxygen, Oxygen Concentrators, Masks, as well as Beds and Mattresses. Mr. Patrick Chizabulyo, Vice President at Swakop Uranium, attended the handover ceremony at the NUST Building in Windhoek on the 27 July, 2021. Speaking at the event, he said:” During these difficult times, where the nation has and continues to loose valuable lives, we have to stay focused and committed to winning the fight against COVID-19. Let me take this opportunity to also encourage all Namibians to go out in large numbers and get vaccinated to gain herd immunity. In addition, let us continue to adhere to the guidelines set out by the government, which include but are not limited to wearing your mask properly, hand sanitizing, and social distancing to minimize the impact of COVID-19.” Swakop Uranium remains committed to the fight against COVID-19 and will continue to support the initiatives and measures taken

Truck driver takes the wrong turn...... Changes his trip into a death ride on the Henties Bay road A Zimbabwean national, Takudwa Blessing Marimo (23), appeared on charges of culpable homicide and reckless or negligent driving in the Swakopmund magistrates court on Wednesday afternoon, following a fatal crash on the Henties Bay road on Tuesday. Marimo made a U-turn with his truck on the road, causing an oncoming vehicle to crash into the truck. Marimo, who is represented by Beatrix Bianca Boois, will remain in custody until his next court appearance on 9 August, where he is expected to make a formal bail application. State Prosecutrix Beata Mwahi argued granting Marimo bail will not be in the interest of the administrative justice, as he might abscond and never return to Namibia to stand trial. According to Inspector Ileni Shapumba of the Namibian Police's public relations department, Marimo was driving a white Freight liner truck (registration mark ACZ 1506 with trailer reg no. AAS 9323) from Walvis Bay en route to Zimbabwe. He was supposed to turn onto the B2 towards Usakos, but instead took a wrong turn and continued in the direction of Henties Bay. Marimo was phoned and informed he was on the wrong route. He stopped and made a U-turn with the truck's trailers positioned diagonally across the road. A vehicle was approaching, but there was not much Marimo could do to prevent the vehicle slamming into the trailer of the truck. The force of the collision sent the vehicle, a Government care with the registration mark GRN 4338, under the trailer, instantly killing the sole occupant of the illfated vehicle, 49-year-old employee of the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Services, Festus Jason Amuikuaya. Marimo was arrested at the scene.

Walvis Bay residents remain defiant against anti-dumping by-laws......... Traffic hazards
A resident of Walvis Bay, who nearly crashed his vehicle into a waste skip (not the waste skip depicted above), called upon the traffic department this week to step up their actions to bring those to the book who create traffic hazards due to ignorance and negligence. I have made a point of it now to identify traffic hazards, as I know it is sheer grace that we don’t see more accidents caused by the countless traffic hazards blanketing Walvis Bay”, he explained. In many areas construction equipment like large mixers, storage containers, piles of bricks, building sand and gravel are blocking parts of streets. In other parts of the town waste skips don’t have reflective surfaces to increase visibility at night. This resident also identified several points where manholes or utility wells have no covers, making it dangerous for vehicles driving over it or on the pavements for pedestrians. He did thank the municipality for at last fitting a cover on a service opening on the intersection of 5th Road and Fritz Lange Street.
A large number of Walvis Bay residents continue to ignore warnings against dumping building rubble, garden waste and even household trash on open premises. These two pictures show rubbish piles growing by the day in Sam Nujoma Avenue in the central business district (lower picture) and Nangolo Mbumba Drive (top picture). Residents are once more urged to refrain from dumping. Not only is it illegal, it is also arrogant, selfish and unpatriotic.

Eastweather batters the coastal towns....

Eastweather (also known as bergwind conditions) has been battering the Namibian coast since last weekend, driven by the formation of cold fronts over mainland South Africa and subsequent cold weather over the interior of much of South Africa. Bergwind conditions develop as these cold winds warm up. Residents of the coast are bracing for strong eastwinds today and also on Saturday in the morning and later in the day southwesterly winds. Conditions return to more humid weather early next week, according to weather predictions.
Tourism Expo cancelled..... Covid-19 has impacted us all, but mostly changed the way we do business. To survive, we need to adapt to new circumstances as well as joint hands in all efforts to make Namibia a safer destination to Namibians as well as to our guests. The tourism sector has been one of those hardest hit by the pandemic, and we need to add to all measures that has been put in place in security jobs and continuity in the Tourism Industry. While the virus has instilled fear amongst us, making us more careful when deciding to travel, we will also need to start adapting to this new normal. Namibia Media Holdings, for the first time in 23 year of the Namibia Tourism Expo, is announcing the cancellation of the 2021 Namibia Tourism Expo with an aim to rally behind the Ministry of Health and Social Services with an effort to have more Namibians vaccinated. In a bid to support the sector, Namibia Media Holdings (NMH), the Namibia Tourism Board, the Ministry of Environment, Tourism and Forestry as well as FENATA, is aiming to have 1million Namibians vaccinated by the beginning of the next Tourism season which is 1 September 2021. This partnership will assist the Ministry of Health and Social Service by setting up more vaccination centres across the country. “Safety of the Namibian residents is of paramount importance, hence a need for a concerted effort and aggressive drive to campaign to dispel and demystify the ongoing misinformation. More crucial to restart tourism is for us to reduce high risk status of Namibia, therefore joint effort in this is highly commendable. “Digu //Naobeb, NTB CEO

Namibia's oldest coastal running and cycling event cancelled Rudi Bowe
The Hangana Hake Run and Ride, Namibia's oldest coastal running and cycling event slated for 2 October 2021 in Walvis Bay, has been cancelled again. This is the second consecutive year that the annual sporting event, enjoyed by an estimated 1000 local and international participants will not take place. The formerly known Lucky Star Marathon, the Hangana Hake Run, a half marathon and 10km fun run is pivotal for athletes aiming to qualify for the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons. The event also offers a cycling category event that offers the same excitement and diversity to cycling enthusiasts in 2015, with the main event being a Namibian Cycling Federation sanctioned 105km road race.
Other cycling events include an off-road 21km fat bike race, which traverses sand dunes in the vicinity of Walvis Bay, the 21km mountain bike and also a 5km kiddie's race. The organisers, Hangana Seafood, said that a decision was taken to cancel the event due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and related risk to the participants. “We cannot ignore the reality of the times we live in. Our priority remains the health and safety of our participants, the protection of our staff, volunteers, suppliers, and the broader coastal community. “We trust that all our stakeholders and participants will understand the responsibility we have towards each other to stay safe. We look forward to hosting the event on 8 October 2022.”
