ThecollaborationbetweenNamibiaandAfrican UnionCommissiononcapacitybuildingforthe effective implementation of the Charters needs to be maintained until the performance on the implementationofthefivechaptersoftheChar terisfullyembedded.

Campaign to educate residents about fire response

THE Walvis Bay Urban Constituency Office organised a campaign to educate Walvis Bay residents about fire responseandinvolvementinfightingfires.

The stakeholders moved around the streets of Walvis Bay, handing out information leaflets to residents, ahead of an exercise to get the community involved in fighting fires. This initiative is to empower the community with the right informationonwhattodowhenafireoccurs.

Chief Fire Officer, Cornelius Simasiku said the main reason of thecampaignistosharetherightinformationontheprevention and fighting of household fires to the Walvis Bay community Simasikusaid,"itisveryimportantforustotakethisfirepreventionawarenessseriously,sothatweknowexactlyhowtohandle firesthatmayoccuraroundus.”

Disaster ManagementCommitteemember, Joseph Garoeb said some community members have been attacking fire fighters at fireincidents.“Forthisreason,wedecidedtocomeupwiththis initiative to educate the community as well as to bring the fire fighters to the public.” Garoeb pointed out that the committee will be conducting a training program from 5 October to train community members on how to extinguish fires. "We want to enable community members to be able to handle fires whiles waiting for the fire brigade to arrive. Therefore, we urge the membersofthecommunitytosignupforthetrainingatthefire station or at the Walvis Bay Urban Constituency Office, to combatfirestogetherandsavelives,"Garoebsaid.

Brand new Tipper trucks for Lithium Ore mining

The Port of Walvis Bay recently recorded 80 brand new TipperTrucksdestinedfortheXingfengMine,aLithiumOre mineinOmaruru,withintheErongoregion.

The trucks imported from the Republic of China via the Port of Walvis Bay arrived at the Port in two batches (40 trucks per shipment)duringthemonthofJulyandAugustrespectivelyand areexpectedtoimprovethemine'scapacityandefficiency

The Xingfeng Mine extracts Lithium Ore for exportation pur poses and the commodity is destined for Xingfeng's production plantinChina.LithiumOreisaproductusedintheproductionof ceramics and glass, as well as in primary aluminium manufacturing.

Namport's Business Development Partner, Mr Tautinge Festus, saidthatthePortofWalvisBayhasforthisyear,exported25000 tons of Lithium Ore to China with an additional 50 000 tons expectedtobeshippedlaterthismonth.

Excited about these developments, Festus, said “Namport is enthusiasticaboutthisventure,asthemineanticipatestorampup itsexportvolumesthroughthePortofWalvisBay,duetogrowing global demand as a result of improving commodity price of LithiumOre.”

“The shipment of these trucks signifies the positive outlook that theinvestorsforeseefortheindustry”,hefurtherstated. AccordingtoFestusNamportcurrentlyhousestwobulkhandling facilities namely Walvis Bay Bulk Terminal and the Bigen Kuumba Port Services Terminal which play significant roles in thehandlingofthisproductandsimilarbulkcommodities.

School's borehole malfunctions

The borehole at Martin Luther High School with about 270 pupils at Omaruru in Erongo region has started tomal function and left the school facing water challenges since the beginningofthismonth.

The Principal at Martin Luther High School, Israel Mavenonjo said that the boreholethatisthemainsourceofwater fortheschoolneedstobecleaned. “Hopefully,bythisweektheissuewillbe resolved. The issue is being attended to and we were busy selecting a drilling company It is not that we do not have water, it is just that there is no running wateratthemoment,”Mavenonjosaid, According to the school principalpupils havebeenusingthebushtorelievethemselves as there are no pit latrines at the school.“Since we do not have a choice, the pupils have to use the bush while we are attending to the issue.The pupils are in the hostel and we cannot send them homebecausewewillbelate.”

Grade 11 examinations are approaching and we cannot send them (pupils) home. [Although] this issue is common in Namibia, it is our first experience,” the principalsaid.

According to the spokesperson of the ministry of education Sam Shino, the ministries head office has not recieved a report about the ongoing water crisis at the school. “We will look into the problem.”

National short course championships at the coast

The Namibian Swimming Federation (NSF) and the International Paralympic Committee(IPC)heldtheirnationalshortcourseswimmingchampionshipsatThe Water Cube swimming pool at Swakopmund on Saturday 23 September

The four-day swim competition sponsored by Old Mutual, that kicked off on Thursday 22 September, saw more than 250 able bodied swimmers, Para swimmers as well as master swimmers

between seven and 70 from six Namibian clubs participating alongside a team from Botswana.

President of the Namibian Swimming Federation Aileen Botha said through the

NationalPhysiqueCommittee(NPC)andIPC,wehavebeenable to have our swimming gala sanctioned for our Para-swim-mers, which means that their times will also be recognised internationallyandtheytoocanrepresentNamibiawithpride.

Botha revealed that following the conclusion of this year's NationalShortCourseSwimmingChampionships,thefederation willenteritslongcourseseason."Thismeansthatallofourswimming galas move outside and the swimmers start swimming 50metergalas.Ourfinalswimmingchampionshipswilltakeplaceat theendofFebruarynextyearinWindhoek."

Bothasaid"theswimmingshortcoursechampionships,whichare held in September every year, are hosted so that coaches and swimmerscandeterminehowtheyimprovedoveraseason.”

The Dolphins Swimming Club dominated this year's Namibia National Short Course Swimming Championships at The Water Cube swimming pool by securing 3399 points in Swakopmund.

Three Para-swimmers Namasiku van der Linden (15), Jerome Rooi (18) and Caitlin Botha pulled off quite an impressive performance. Van der Linden won six gold medals in six different categories, Rooi won two gold medals for 50m backstroke and 50mfreestyle,whileBothawonsevengoldmedals.

The Short Course National Swimming Championship 2022 trophy winners were Jose Canjulo Senior-Victor Ludorum, Molina Smalley-Victrix Ludorum, Rodney Feris-Junior Victor LudorumandRoselinaMatyayi-JuniorVictrixLudorum.

A Debmarine Youth Sport initiative 'Bridging the Gap’

DebmarineNamibia,thecountry'sleadingmarinediamondminingcompany,in collaboration with the Namibia Schools Sports Union (NSSU) will host the 2022 regionalfinalsofitsyouthsportinitiative'BridgingtheGap'on1and2Octoberat theVinetaSportsField,SwakopmundErongoRegion.

The schools' sports programme, Bridging the Gap is Debmarine Namibia's brainchild and aims to target more than 770 school boys and girls from all 14 regions, participating in U15 football,U17netballandU15athletics.

Theeventthatwasfirstlaunchedin2019hadto take a two-year forced break from the local schools'sportingcalendarduetoCovid-19.For this year's edition, Debmarine Namibia has come on board with an N$3 million sponsorshipovertwoyears.

Debmarine's Chief Executive Officer Otto Shikongo said called 'Bridging the Gap' initiative is important because it instils discipline and respect among young athletes andhelpsinidentifyingfuturestars.

According to Shikongo, sports are the most important element in our society in terms of change. It breaks regional and international barriers. “This initiative will help in keeping childrenfromindulginginsocialactivitiesthat negatively affect their lives But most importantly,thisinitiativewillhelpthecountry

identify future stars as well as give them the platformtoshine.”

Shikongo said, “Debmarine Namibia believes in the power of uplifting the Namibian youth through sports development. The initiative not only promotes economic development and a healthy lifestyle but also acts as a catalyst for social cohesion amongst our youth. We work to give children the opportunity to play the sports they love whilst developing astute young professionals,muchneededfortheindustry.”

“Bridging the Gap continuously commits to supportandupliftthebettermentoftheNamibian youth”Shikongoadded.

Debmarine Namibia is excited to invite the coastalcommunitytothe2022regionalfinalsof its youth sport initiative in partnership with the Namibia School Sports Union (NSSU) aimed at boys and girls of school going age called 'BridgingtheGap'.

The gates will open at 7:30 with the opening ceremony at 9:30 on Saturday and closing ceremonyat13:30onSunday

WBPS Astro becomes a reality

In a major boost to the sports infrastructure, Walvis Bay Private School (WBPS) inaugurated a newly built international standard syntheticHockeyAstroTurfattheirschoolpremisesonTuesday27 SeptemberinWalvisBay.

TheartificialHockeyAstroturfthatwillbeknownastheMelvynvanRooyen Astro was build at a cost of about N$6.5 million. TheAstro will prove to be highly beneficial in promoting the sport and will provide local talent an opportunitytoimprovetheirHockeyskills.

The sate-of –the artAstro turf atWBPS is the first of its kind at the coast and thirdinNamibia.Itwillhelpdevelopthenextgenerationofhockeyplayersand will be able to host national and international hockey matches in the harbour town.

RianaVan Rooyen, the wife of the late Melvyn van Rooyen said that the first seedwasplantedinJuly2017whenChristineSmitateacherandHockeycoach at WBPS spoke to her about the dream of a HockeyAstro turf at the school. FiveyearslatertheirdreamofhavingaAstroattheschoolhascometrueasthe firstHockeyAstroturfatthecoastiscomplete,”saidVanRooyen.

NelmarieSimonthedaughterofthelateMelvynvanRooyensaiditisalasting impactontheworld,andagiftthatispasseddownthroughgenerations.Hedid notonlyshareordonatetoorganisationsthathewasinvolvedwithpersonally, he also sponsored projects he believed would grow to be successful, and that wouldchangelives.

Simon added that it was the small acts of kindness, without expectation or recognitionthatfindaspecialplaceinpeople'shearts.“Withthissaid,wesaw thepotentialoftheAstroHockeyturfandtheimpactitwouldhaveinchildren's lives,andalongwithothersponsors,itwasputtoactionandmadeasuccess.” WBPS board chairmanPierre Marais, said that projects like this help develop individualsondifferentlevels.“Itgiveschildrenandplayerstheopportunityto expressthemselves,competewitheachother,developskillsandabilities,andto develop the skill to compete and function as a team.” He added that theAstro turf will not only be utilized byWBPS but other schools and hockey clubs as well.
