in Swakopmund geneem.

Cheaper flights now set for 1 March – FlyAfrica CEO Clifford Strydom

The CEO of the Namibian partner of Namibia FlyAfrica, Clifford Strydom of Nomad Aviation, says the cheaper flights envisaged for Namiba, that were scheduled to take off in February, have been rescheduled to March, due to the logistic process and paperwork in this regard. The newspaper spoke to him in Windhoek, after his latest status meeting with the Civil Aviation Authority. He was up-beat and said the CAA was very accommodating and positive in its approach, and that the low cost flights will hopefully commence on 1 or 2 March. Regarding the cheaper flights envisaged for the

coast, Strydom says they are still very much in the pipeline, but that FlyAfrica has decided to first keep a very close eye on the performance of Air Namibia, for a few months. Air Namibia recently also announced cheaper direct flights to and from Walvis Bay. Strydom says their low cost airline wants to see if

Air Namibia and SAA are really going to offer consumers low cost flights to and from Walvis Bay – and if not, FlyAfrica will introduce cheap flights immediately. Strydom says one of the reasons why they have decided to put a waiting period of six months on the flight plan for Walvis Bay, is the fact that the Airport is still being upgraded.

Strydom says, the moment they find that SAA and Air Namibia do not offer really low cost flights from Walvis Bay, they will introduce their flights. Return flights between Windhoek and Johannesburg and Windhoek and Cape Town, taxes included, will cost around 2 thousand Namibian Dollar. Strydom said prices for

return flights to and from Walvis Bay would cost more or less the same. Strydom says more are on the cards – by the middle of next year, they want to offer direct flights from Walvis Bay to St Helena Island – they are working

with the Transportation Commission to get the route added to their licence. Direct flights from Walvis Bay to Luanda in Angola are also one of the business ventures for 2016.

Geingob to create Presidential Council The President-Elect, Dr Hage Geingob’s administration will have a Presidential Council, a new advisory structure to be made up of the country’s former presidents and prime ministers. Dr Geingob told a media conference in Windhoek on Monday that the structure will be created once he assumes executive state authority, after his inauguration as President on 21 March this year. “This process will be important for camaraderie, consultation and continuity of government policy. In Namibian politics, the legacy continues. Founding President Dr Sam Nujoma brought peace and the incumbent President Hifikepunye Pohamba brought stability. Yours truly (Hage Geingob) is expected to bring about prosperity,” he said. The Presidential Council will be made up of the Head of State at the time

(Geingob) and the two former presidents, but Geingob added that the council will co-opt former prime ministers, deputy prime ministers and other key personalities who have formed the backbone of Namibian politics since independence, if need be. The President-Elect indicated that Nujoma and Pohamba will be engaged in advisory roles on the council because they have 15 and 10 years of governance experience, respec-

tively. “It is rare that you find a situation like that in Africa. Honestly, that situation is unique to Namibia. In the past, former African leaders would either be exiled, imprisoned or six feet under the ground. But in the new Africa, former presidents live freely and in tranquillity in their countries, enjoying respect and appreciation from their countrymen and women,” he said, adding that some

former presidents often end up playing important roles in their countries. Such is the case with former President Dr Nujoma who, through an Act of Parliament, was given the status of Founding Father and Father of the Namibian Nation. “Dr Nujoma is still as popular and loved by Namibians like he was during his tenure as President of Namibia,” he said. It is official, Tim Ekandjo the Chief Human Capital and Corporate Affairs Officer at MTC revealed that Swakopmund will be hosting the NAMAs for the second time. The announcement took place on Friday afternoon, 30 January, at the Pfadfinderheim Hall in Kramersdorf, Swakopmund. Ekandjo kept the official announcement short and simple and announced that the NAMAs 2015 will once again be hosted by Swakopmund. He said that Swakopmund has won the bet against Ongwediva. He thanked the northern town of Ongwediva for taking an interest to host the popular music show,

but said unfortunately the host is Swakopmund again. Ekandjo said the reason why they chose Swakopmund is because of the coastal town’s ultra-modern Swakopmund Indoor Sports Centre where the show will take place on 1 and 2 May. It is the first time in the history of the NAMAs that it is hosted at the

same town for 2 consecutive years. During his remarks, the Governor of the Erongo Region, Mutjavikua invited all Namibians to come and witness the event. “Erongo welcomes everyone” he said. This year the prize money for Best Male and Female Artist of the year will double to N$100 000.

Sinvula Reuben (left) with Alfred Muhinda and their guest of honour Liesl Losper During the course of last week, Sinvula Reuben, came across what is known as a Pangolin. Late that specific night, his dog was barking non-stop and he went out to see what was upsetting his dog. He found the creature, curled up into a ball. He immediately took it to shelter in his garage and kept it there until his cousin, Alfred Muhinda, showed up to help. They put the pangolin in a container to keep him safe. The next day, they contacted the Department of Nature Conservation, who said that it had probably been brought here by someone, maybe a smuggler, and then it escaped. The pangolin was taken to the NamibNaukluft National Park yesterday morning. Fact Box (Source: Wikipedia): The size of pangolins varies by species, ranging from 30 to 100 centimetres. Females are generally smaller than males. The tongues of pangolins are extremely elongated and extend into the abdominal

cavity. Large pangolins can extend their tongues as much as 40 centimetres, with a diameter of only 0.5 centimetres. Behaviour Most pangolins are nocturnal animals that use their well-developed sense of smell to find insects. The long-tailed pangolin is also active by day, while other species of pangolins spend most of the daytime sleeping, curled up into a ball. Arboreal pangolins live in hollow trees, whereas the ground dwelling species dig tunnels underground, to a depth of 3.5 metres. Pangolins are also good swimmers. Diet Pangolins are insectivorous. The bulk of their diet consists of various species of ants and termites and may be supplemented by other insects, especially larvae. They are somewhat particular and tend to consume only one or two species of insects,

even when many species are available to them. A pangolin will consume an average of 140 to 200 g of insects per day. Reproduction Pangolins are solitary and meet only to mate. Males are larger than females, weighing up to 50% more. While there is no defined mating season, they typically mate once each year, usually during the summer or autumn months. Conservation As a result of increasing threats to pangolins, mainly in the form of illegal, international trade in pangolin skin, scales and meat, these species have received increasing conservation attention in recent years. For example, in 2014, t h e I U C N ( I n t e rnational Union for the Conservation of Nature) re-categorised all eight species of pangolin on its Red List of Threatened Species (www.iucnredlist.org), and each species is now threatened with extinction.

Currently we are not attending classes nor working in the hospitals as we are awaiting information on how we expect this year to run. We are tired of being caught up in the middle of poor management. I have had the pleasure of working with all 34 of my colleagues. Never have I worked with a group more passionate, undeterred and hard working. We urge the Namibian community to not lose faith in the Namibian trained doctors due to politics and scandal. Hopefully Jessica and her classmates, will have clarity about their future today. Meanwhile the more than sixty 2015 fifth years who have been boycotting classes and have sent a letter of demand to authorities, that was answered last week, started attending classes yesterday, in a positive step towards the authorities' resolution of their predicament. The Ombudsman, John Walters, will represent the 2015 fifth years at today’s meeting.

Stabbed to death over N$25 Marshallino Beukes

A 24 year old man was killed in DRC informal settlement in Swakopmund between 24:00 and 01:00, on Saturday night. Swakopmund residents who have settled illegally on a portion of municipal land in the eastern part of the town, are demanding the right to be settled there permanently. They have even threatened to go ahead and erect shacks on the land by St. Valentine’s Day - 14 February - if the municipality refuses to grant them permission to settle on the unserviced land. Group leader Gotthardt Kandume, who is also president of the Christian Democratic Voice (CDV) party, told Nampa in a telephonic interview last Thursday that he has written a letter to the municipality, asking that they be given the right to occupy the plots. He said the town council was also informed that they must respond to the letter by 12 February to dissuade the group of landless residents from putting up housing structures at the site on 14 February. The unserviced land, which is currently occupied by about 600 residents, is located between the Hanganeni and DRC

informal settlements in the eastern part of Swakopmund in the Erongo Region. Since December last year when they first invaded the municipal land, Kandume has been telling the media that they will erect their housing structures on the plots, but that has not happened so far. Swakopmund mayor Juuso Kambueshe said Kandume did not give the municipality any ultimatum, but only requested for an audience with the council. “We forwarded the letter to our lawyers so that they can look at it before we agree to meet him. Our legal team will also consider all the things which happened around this land-grabbing issue since the beginning,” Kambueshe noted. He said Kandume has even apologised to the town council for marking off the plots illegally.

“He came to our office and said he was sorry to have taken the law into his own hands, and now wants to sit and discuss the matter with council,” he said. The mayor further stated that the municipality laid trespassing charges against Kandume and a certain Engelhardt Uirab in respect of that land invasion. Meanwhile, Erongo Regional Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua has warned that any attempts to put up shacks on that piece of land would result in the forceful removal of the land invaders. “This is someone who lost the elections, and wants to remain visible. It is just a publicity stunt he is busy with. The truth is that they will never be allowed to illegally settle on that land,” Mutjavikua said. NAMPA

Obtaining Fishing

Permits

Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations.

(Photo by Paulus Kiiyala Shiku) NAMPA

WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Factory manager, Gys Cilliers, told Nampa during a visit to the factory on Friday that the last 1 000 olive plants arrived here in November last year from South Africa. “What is exciting is that we are going to produce our own oil from here and just sell it. ing business is seasonal. The olive project started with 1 000 in 2013 and most of the plants have already started bearing fruits. “By the end of this year we will employ 40 extra people to permanently work for the Olive project. Most of them will be women,” said Cilliers. Olive is harvested

works only during the months of July to November. Last year August, another N$1 million olive plantation was launched 10 kilometres west of the Okombahe settlement. This plantation is expected to provide employment to more than 300 people from Okombahe and other settle-

Efforts to create permanent employment for Namibians have seen the seal-processing factory at Henties Bay diversify into olive farming. The olive farm, called the Olive Project, started in this coastal town during 2013, and it's first harvest is expected around June. Forty people, mostly women, are expected to be employed at the project this year.

Readers' E-mail

A reader recently sent an email to the namib time’s news desk office after reading an article in the paper dated 20 January... Where there is a will. The reader wanted to know whether Jeremia Mashona was like every business owner paying tax. Mr Jeremia said he has papers from the Municipality of Walvis Bay that permits him to sell his items. “After an officer came and saw me selling here, he explained to me that it is illegal to sell without any documentation and I immediately made my way over to the Municipality and got my papers” Mashona explained.

Drink spiking still rife the coast A local girl was allegedly the latest victim of drink spiking at a well-known night club in Walvis Bay over the past weekend. The namib times contacted the authorities to shed light on what to do in such a situation and according to the Walvis Bay Reaction Team it happens quite often at the coast. Carlos Figueiredo FYI namib times, the US and Canada have done studies on this and found that it is 100% BS, out of over 4 000 cases of women going to hospital and pleading they were spiked they found no traces of chemicals that could’ve been used for it and just found their blood/alcohol level high. Girls must just learn to control their liquor and stop blaming the “spiking”. Sarah Foghill So why do we worry instead about strangers with drugs? One reason is that alcohol is familiar—people have seen it around them since childhood and they believe they can predict how much they can drink safely. Those with little experience with alcohol can badly miscalculate, mistaking the effects of alcohol for those of an added drug. Even experienced drinkers can get it wrong, however: alcohol’s effects can vary wildly depending on one’s stress levels, hormones, the setting where someone is drinking and many other factors. How drunk someone gets is even affected by the people around them. Of course, rape is caused by rapists and being intoxicated is no reason to blame the victim. But we need better education around alcohol, not panics about

rarely-used drugs that don’t empower women to understand actual risks and suggest that bars are filled with men who would commit premeditated rape. Now that was the other part of the study. Besides rape and sexual assault is a real thing. So before you go telling women to control their drinking maybe you could tell your fellow men to control their dicks and urges. Anna Kee Maldri Josti Spiking is real and can happen to men too. Every club-going person need to be on alert and never leave his/her glass unattended. Hi

The last 4 pictures are of the pavement on both sides of 9th Rd between 6th St and Sam Nujoma Avenue. The other two are behind Shoprite in 6th St. My queries:

1. Our chief traffic officer said he would not tolerate building rubble on pavements. The bricks and container and rubble have been on the pavement for almost three months. 2. Shoprite uses the pavement to store their pallets and wash their trolleys. I have seen pedestrians forced to walk in the street and try to pass badly, and often dangerously, parked large delivery trucks. When is our traffic department going to do something about this? Concerned member of the public

NOTE: namib times is awaiting reaction from the Walvis Bay Traffic Department – they promised to react soonest.

Namibia’s Pandu on Divine Orchestra Mavourlene Gaes

Amalia Ndapandula Thikundeko is the Namibian member of Divine Orchestra, a gospel music group which takes different musicians from Southern Africa Development Countries (SADC) and brings them together through music. Pandu, as she is better known, is a very sweet and God-fearing woman with an amazing and determined love for music. She says that she had no knowledge of Divine Orchestra until she saw an article in namib times and got intrigued by them. The group was formed on 5 January last year, with the aim of spreading the word of God through music. Divine Orchestra is said to currently have about 60 members. Some of the countries that are part of this gospel group, include South Africa, Botswa-

na, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, Malawi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Describing her experience with Divine Orchestra , she says it has given her the opportunity to not only meet people from other countries, but also to be part of different cultures. “After I saw the article in the paper, I immediately phoned the contact number that was provided and they informed me to send them two songs I composed and they loved my songs” Pandu said. After receiving the in-

Pandu (middle) with Helena and Perpetual from Divine Orchestra vitation from the group, she got on the bus and was soon on her way to Harare. When she got there she was received with open arms and they started recording the album the following day. The album which is titled “Divine Praises”

consists of 14 tracks. The CD is set to be launched in Walvis Bay at the Kuisebmond Stadium on 6 September. Because every member of Divine Orchestra was told to compose two songs, Pandu had to teach her songs “Iileni Ku Jesu” and

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, be a light to my eyes, music to mine ears, sweetness to my taste, and full contentment to my heart. Be my sunshine in the day, my food at table, my repose in the night, my clothing in nakedness, and my succour in all necessities. Lord Jesus, I give you my body, my soul, my substance, my fame, my friends, my liberty, and my life. Dispose of me and all that is mine as it may seem best to you and to the glory of your blessed name. . Amen.

VERSE FOR THE DAY: Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. —James 1:17

Kia Elite riders Freyer and Pretorius excel at National Championships day.
