The Elderly Home aims at giving the elderly an opportunity to live happy lives by providing services tailored to their individual needs. The total construction cost of the Narraville Elderly Home is expected to be around N$25 million. The home will consists of a main hall, a clinic and 58 single and double residential units with a bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and lounge which will be constructed at a cost of N$250 000 per unit. At a fundraising gala dinner held in November last year an amount of well over N$2 million was raised for the construction of long overdue old age home in Narraville. On Saturday, 30 July about N$150 000 was raised at a dance and dinner that was held to raise more funds for the construction of the Narraville Elderly Home. The board of trustees would like everyone to be part of the journey for the establishment of the Narraville Elderly home. They appealed to the community of Walvis Bay, particularly the Narraville residents to donate a brick per family per month for the construction of this of the elderly home. The Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Narraville Elderly Home, David Williams, said they intend to move full steam ahead as soon as they receive the green light from the Walvis Bay Town Council. Williams said, “we need everyone's help to improve the lives of our senior citizens by providing them with a place of their own that they can call home and safe haven.” The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Derek Klazen, also attended the event, and said the construction project of the Narraville Elderly Home is close to his heart. Klazen said, "the idea was initially tabled in 2004 but stalled. At the time, the minister of local authorities announced a sponsorship of N$1 million for the construction and benefit of nursing homes, but the group in Narraville was not ready and no money was received. However, several fishing companies came on board in 2021 and undertook to make the project a success." The Mayor of Walvis Bay, Trevino Forbes, said David Williams and Daniel Mouton approached the municipality and request to make land available was tabled and is one of the few that were accepted unopposed. Forbes said, “the Walvis Bay town council fully support the initiative taken by the residence to build an old age home in Narraville." Forbes emphasized that the project will not succeed without the support of the community. The Board of Trustees of the Narraville Elderly Home are Elmo Plato, Daniel Mouton, Donovan Paulse, Carol Williams, Jeanine Strauss, David Williams, Shaheed Saban and Dr Dean Kock.

Fishermen left in the dark Rudi Bowe
Fifty fishermen employed on the MVF Pemba Bay fishing vessel have been left in the dark with no pay for the past two months and do not know whether they are still employed by Seacope Freezer Fishing. Seacope Freezer Fishing that utilises the hake freezer quota allocated to Seaflower was established in 2004, which is a joint venture between Seaflower Whitefish Corporation Limited who owns 51% and the Spanish fishing company, Copemar that is active in the Namibia fishing industry since 1978 with 49% ownership. MVF Pemba Bay fishing vessel catches and processes the frozen hake into various products such as Hake Fillets, Hake Headed and Gutted and Hake Whole. Bycatches are Kingklips, Monk, Pota, Jacopever and Skate. Products are marketed through the Seacope brand and exported mainly to Spain. Shop-steward and crew member Nelson Ndaameshimesaid at a media briefing that the MVF Pemba Bay fishing vessel docked on 28 March 2022 in Walvis Bay. Ndaameshime said “We were told that we have a week off, and will go back to the fishing grounds in
early April. Our vessel, however, is still anchored, with the foreign crew still on board. The company cannot give us any explanation about what is happening.” According to Ndaameshime they received their April salary on 16 May and the salary for May only on 8 June, “From there on, we have not received a salary. Additionally, we have signed an agreement to also have our bonuses paid for 2020 and 2021, which is also not yet paid. We have been trying to get information from the company since March. We have written to the fisheries and labour ministers too. They also did not respond to our plight. We are not happy with the treatment. Our families are suffering due to the negligence of the company, and we are worried that we will lose our belongings due to non-payment. ”Ndaameshime added. Ndaameshime explained that they have been trying to get information from Alex Gawanab, the CEO of FishCor through the union as well as the labour inspector's office. It is bad to see that
government related companies are the most disorder and abusive to their employees instead of giving a good example to private owned companies,” Ndaameshime concluded. The vessel is currently docked in Walvis Bay at Hangana, with all belongings, passports and seabooks ofthe employees still on the vessel. Fishcor CEO Alex Gawanab said that they are aware of the situation, and that Seacope is currently experiencing financial difficulties. Gawanab said Fishcor is not in any way responsible for the payment of salaries as they are only providing administrative services to Seacope. “Our obligations are defined by our service agreement. We run the payroll administrating duties, but they are responsible for payments. “They are generating and managing their own income. We don't see their income and losses nor administer it on a day-to-day basis,” Gawanab added. Gawanab said “Seascope is a joint venture between Seaflower
Whitefish Corporation Limited and Spanish company CopeMar.” According to Gawanab “This is an agreement we inherited from the previous administration. In terms of operations, CopeMar handles this, while we run the administration for payroll for the employees.”
“However, revenue is generated from the sale of quota, which is then paid over to us, in order for us to pay the salaries of the workers. We receive a service fee for the administration of payroll” he added. Gawanab further said “We are aware of the plight of the workers but we want to make sure that the right channels are followed. The responsibility of salaries is that of Seacope and that they are not responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the vessel.” He ex-
plained that a special Fiscor board meeting is set to take place on Monday afternoon to discuss the issue around Seascope and the workers of MVF Pemba Bay fishing vessel. “A meeting with the Spanish counterparts, CopeMar, will take place where we will discuss the same matters and what needs to happen. If the company is running into financial problems and how funds will be raised is a board decision,” said Gawanab. Gawamab added “It is
Some of the fishermen employed on the MVF Pemba Bay fishing vessel
not my decision as Fishcor CEO or CEO of Seaflower Group of Companies. I am not a member of the board, and can only advise the board to intervene.” According to Gawanab, he spoke to the NASAWU president Paulus Hangoa week before last week, but apparently they did not have a definitive answer to give to the Union and the workers as it is a tricky situation. “After the two meetings, we might have definitive answers to give.”

MTC in conjunction with OPM donates N$2 million towards National Rudi Bowe Internship Program
Telecommunications giant, MTC, in conjunction with the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) will collectively contribute N$2 million per annum to hostile requirements from the industry that only opens doors to graduates who have a shoestring of experience.
With about 48 000 Namibian students in dire need of internships to graduate, MTC has called on other corporates to pledge their support towards the national internship program, which started in 2019 with a N$7 million budget and aims to assist between 160 and 1 600 students annually. Should all considered corporates sign on the dotted line, the initiative is set to raise a whopping N$14.4 million per year, with each company urged to pledge N$200 000. The Chief Human Capital Officer at MTC, Tim Ekandjo, said a total of 600 students have so far benefitted from MTC's national internship program Ekandjo said, "MTC and the Office of the Prime Minister will collectively contribute N$2 million per annum. So, we are looking for other corporates out there to come on board with a contribution of at least N$200 000. Therefore, MTC is now ready to upscale the project to become a national vehicle for internships.” The Managing Director at MTC, Licky Erastus, highlighted that although the program takes stock of its achievements, smart partnerships will have an even bigger impact. Erastus said, "we are now at a point where we want to carve out a future for the program to see how it can be integrated into the national education goals and structure,” and added, “Frankly speaking, we have, per annum, more students who need internships, but unfortunately, the program can only take 160 per year. A number that we consider very little if we are to make a significant impact.” Erastus urges and calls on more corporates to come on board to work together as good corporate citizens and make a positive difference in this The Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the United States to Namibia Jessica Long and regard. representatives of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), together with the Namibian Government, reflected on the past six years of the Southern Africa Trade and Investment Hub (USAID TradeHub).
USAID and Trade Industry Showcase Successes in Namibia
The event in Windhoek brought together stakeholders from the Namibian market to share experiences, successes, and lessons learned in enhancing the flow of trade and capital between Namibia, South Africa, and the United States – especially under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). Chargé d'Affaires Long said the United States has been a proud advocate for creating jobs in Namibia through increasing Namibian exports to the United States, fostering U.S. investment in Namibia, and supporting entrepreneurship. The U.S. Government has been a strong partner of the Namibian private sector, particularly firms seeking to explore both the South African market and the U.S. markets through AGOA. As a result of the USAID TradeHub's efforts, the United States has supported Namibian exports to the value of approximately USD 2.7 million in the past three years. These successes include AvaGro, which
received support from USAID to break into the South African market after attaining a vital agricultural practices standard; and Desert Hills, which, through the TradeHub, participated in the 2022 Summer Fancy Food Show in New York to connect with potential buyers and is now better positioned to export to the United States market. Thanks to the USAID TradeHub, Namibian firms are also seeing advances in export readiness. Local firms are gaining confidence and skills in pitching their products to potential international buyers, improving their ability to close deals. Companies with a clear export strategy and plan are more focused and effective in terms of addressing the specific requirements and succeeding with exports. The USAID TradeHub activity is transitioning to the USAID African Trade and Investment program and will continue to support Namibian firms to increase exports by overcoming complex market entry requirements and connecting them with South African and U.S. companies.

Ubuntu gets a new classroom Sharlien Tjambari
The Ubuntu Pre-Primary School in Mondesa was fortunate enough to receive a container, which they will be using as a classroom, and some educational material from Reptile Resources and Mineral Exploration this week Monday. Sugnet Smith, the Spokesperson of Reptile Resources and Mineral Exploration said they decided to assist Elizabeth Elao who is the founder of Ubuntu Pre-Primary School in the DRC Informal Settlement because her school ticked off all the boxes for them to assist as she is registered as a nongovernmental organisation. During an interview
with Namib Times, Smith said, “Elizabeth asked for our assistance, she is teaching up to 36 children aged one to six years, Mondays to Fridays and they asked us for anything we could donate, so today we donated four plastic tables, 24 chairs, crayons, clay and educational material like a whiteboard, markers, etc. just for educational development if one can say so, as we believe in early childhood development at Reptile.” Apart from that, Smith said, they found a very good container and they, at Reptile, believe it is sustainable to give them a permanent
structure to do education. The container was painted and a floor was put in. Elao thanked Reptile and said no words can express her joy. Elao said, “we are very happy to have a new classroom with such a beautiful colour. We never knew that we could get a classroom like this one, it was all a surprise. We can't wait to move in.” Elao said there are so many kindergartens in DRC that are struggling and need help and she wishes that Reptile would also render the same help to the other kindergartens in the DRC informal settlement.

Orano Mining Namibia supports environmental education Orano Mining Namibia donated N$62 000 to the Urban Sustainability Centre of the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET) based in Swakopmund last week Thursday. The Urban Sustainability Centre offers school groups training in environmental education and sustainable development, and the support of Orano Mining Namibia will enable 1000 school children to attend the week-long programme at the centre between 2022 and 2023. NaDEET is a non-profit, Namibian trust established in 2003. The aim of the organisation is to provide environmental education to Namibians, addressing relevant environmental issues through hands-on experiential training. At the core of NaDEET's programmes is the NaDEET Centre located on the NamibRand Nature Reserve in the Hardap Region. NaDEET's environmental literacy and the Urban Sustainability Centre that was officially opened in Swakopmund in 2019 complements its activities by providing more focus on urban sustainability training. The centre offers unique hands-on programmes aimed at various age groups. Participants learn first-hand about sustainable living, the importance of biodiversity and the balance between humans and the environment. Practical modules include nature in the city, exploring urban sustainable living (water, energy, waste, and climate change) and understanding sustainable development through a practical investigation of Swakopmund. The Orano donation supplements the contribution from the main sponsor Brot für die Welt, a German development organisation active in
various projects in Namibia. Education is globally recognised as one of the enablers in achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Namibia is a signatory to both the Sustainable Development Goals and the Global Education 2030 Agenda. The Orano Group is committed to contributing to carbon neutrality, calling it the world's number one environmental challenge. In addition to being convinced of the role that nuclear energy can play in the energy transition to low-carbon electricity since 2004 Orano has been running a program to reduce its own emissions with a view to contributing to the collective effort. In Namibia, the Orano Trekkopje Project is still under care and maintenance. However, through the Erongo Desalination Plant, Orano Mining Namibia contributes to regional development by providing a safe and secure water source that is both sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Standard Bank Desert Festival Rudi Bowe
The Walvis Bay Festival, commonly known as the 'Walvisfees', has been renamed and will now be known as the Standard Bank Desert Festival. The festival will kick off on Friday, 30 September, and will continue until Saturday, 1 October. This was said at the launch of the festival on Thursday, 28 July at the Walvis Bay Private High School. The festival, previously known as the Walvis Bay Festival and accommodating the Hangana Hake Run and Ride, was last hosted in 2019 at the Jan Wilken Stadium. This year Walvis Bay Private High School will play host to the Standard Bank Desert Festival with the assistance of Standard Bank that contributed N$300 000 to this year's festivities and N$100 000 to the Walvis Bay Road Runners club, which will be organising the cycling and running events as part of the festival. The Senior Commercial Relationship Manager for Standard Bank, Anton van Rensburg, said at the launch of the festival, the bank is delighted by the concept of having people coming together being physically active while providing a platform for family and friends to spend time together while celebrating life, sport, music and of course food. Van Rensburg said platforms such as the festival allow space for the growth of the sports industry on a competitive and social level. “We dedicate our contribution to the coastal community and foresee many events in the future that will positively empower the people. The festival provides opportunities for vendors and entrepreneurs alike to expose their products and services to the people, and for the sportsmen to hone their respective skills. At Standard Bank, we are aware of the important role physical activity plays in the formation of a holistically, healthy human being. Hence, we've been actively involved in the sports industry, partnering with sports codes like rugby and hockey, especially at the school level -
cementing the importance of sport at a young age,” van Rensburg said. The main organizer of the festival, Henry Kemp said the Standard Bank Desert Festival is not related to the Indongo Toyota Desert Sports Festival - also hosted by the school. “We are breathing new life into the 'Walvisfees', which is aimed at getting families together to enjoy a fun-filled day. “We are looking at setting up stalls where local entrepreneurs can showcase their products in the form of a traditional flea market. There will be a beer tent with musicians providing the entertainment for the day,” Kemp said. The Road Runners Club will host a 21, 10, and 5kilometer run as well as a 100 and 45-kilometer cycling event. “We are in talks with CrossFit here in Walvis Bay to host a CrossFit competition, and we are in final talks to also host a karate event like in the past. PartyKidz will also have a dedicated section for the children, so while mom and dad enjoy a welldeserved beer, the little ones can have some supervised fun,” Kemp said and added, “There is a strong possibility that the festival could also host an international hockey match at the WBPHS Astro Hockey turf that will be complete by then. The Namibian Hockey Union is running point on this, and it will be an immense honour to host our Namibian team at the coast. Our school hockey teams will also be in action, and there will also be some netball matches taking place on our new netball courts. We are very excited and hope that the weather plays along. Anyone who wishes to exhibit their products at the festival is welcome to contact the school for more information.”
