The International Labour Organization (ILO) and Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation in collaboration with Namibia's leading Maritime and Fisheries Institute (NAMFI) held the first 'Guidelines for Implementing Occupational Safety and Health Provisions on Fishing Vessels' course for labour inspectors from 20-24 June in Walvis Bay. The Director of Labour Services in the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation, Ms Aune Mudjanima attended the course together with 15 labour inspectors under her directorate in Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Lüderitz and Windhoek are now certified to board fishing vessels to do their work to the fullest. The Director of NAMFI, Ms. Magy Sam at the certificate handover ceremony said NAMFI has been approached by the International Labour Organization to design a tailor-made course for labour inspectors. Ms Sam said, “this course is the start of a collaborative relationship with the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation and the In-ternational Labour Organisation. According to Ms Sam, the course affirms that NAMFI is on the right track of achieving the vision of being the Maritime Training Centre of choice in Southern Africa. “NAMFI has successfully done its part and bridged the gap between the Maritime & Fisheries Industry and Labour services,” Sam added. Sam explained the course is to equip labour inspectors with the foresight to identify hazards of any nature on fishing vessels. She added, “We are hoping that our main clients who are the seafarers will have a safe working environment as labour inspectors will be equipped with the necessary training to make working at sea safer.” “With the training they received from NAMFI, the labour inspectors will soon be going to sea to inspect labour related issues including occupational safety and health hazards on fishing vessels,” Sam said. The Director of Labour Services in the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation, Ms Aune Mudjanima said that they employed as labour inspectors that are responsible for occupational safety and health hazards condition of employment. Mudjanima said, “our mandate and responsibility are to make sure that the em-ployment fraternity is at peace. We can only do this in all sectors of the economy if we are well capacitated.” Mudjanima added, “working together as one team with Maritime Affairs and the fishing sector as they are our stakeholders, the Employers and employees. It is our responsibility to enforce the law, advice and recommend what the busi-ness fraternity should apply.” “As a Maritime requirement we could not carry out our mandate to the fullest within the Maritime and fishing sectors. However, the doors are now open to do our work to the fullest,” Mudjanima said.

west coast of Africa. Swakopmund is the second last stop of the cable drop-off. The last stop will be Yzerfontein in Cape Town-South Africa. In February 2021, African telco, Paratus Group, together with Telecom Namibia, was selected to build the cable landing station (CLS) for the Equiano sub-sea internet cable in Namibia. The investment cost is about N$300 million. Some of the challenges experienced while landing the cable included Covid-19 and the weather conditions as the ship was coming down the west coast of Africa. Paratus completed the building of the CLS in September last year, and the internal fit - including power, cabling cabinets, conduits, race-ways, cages, and security - was completed in January 2022. According to the current CEO of Paratus Group, Barney Harmse, Namibia has higher internet connection levels - at 40.5% compared with an average of 29% for sub-Saharan African countries but has relied upon West Africa Cable System (WACS) for its international connectivity until now. The landing of the Equiano cable will signi-ficantly increase Namibia's international bandwidth capacity as it is four times greater than WACS. This will not only ensure better stability of connectivity in the country but also lower latency and higher speeds in the global transmission of data. Commenting on the landing of the cable last Friday, Harmse said, “it means a great deal to ICT and Namibia in general, this means that every consumer in Namibia will have a new experience when they go onto the internet as soon as we have connected this cable to our landing station. From Swakopmund, we will be distributing massive internet capacity in Namibia and the rest of our Southern African neighbours. It is good for Namibia, it is good for our economy, we are creating more jobs and the most important thing is that we are putting Namibia on the map forever.” Harmse added: “this is a landmark event and a great day for Namibia's digital transformation. We are very proud to be the Google landing partner, and infrastructure partner with Telecom Namibia, to deliver better connectivity to everyone in Namibia.” Harmse concluded, “Equiano will make an enduring and valuable contribution towards the development of Namibia's communications infrastructure. We are proud partners in this intervention to deliver improved internet quality to the

people of Namibia. And this is just one intervention in which Paratus is involved towards the shared goal of transforming Africa through digital access to more information and content.” Once Equiano becomes fully operational in Q4 this year, it is expected to deliver up to 20 times more capacity than was previously available in Namibia. According to a recent economic impact assessment, conducted by Africa Practice and Genesis Analytics, and commissioned by Google, Equiano's arrival in Namibia is set to increase internet speeds by over 2.5 times; increase internet penetration by 7.5% in the next three years; and act as a catalyst for considerable growth, job creation, and sustainability. Commenting on the landing of Equiano in Namibia, Nitin Gajria, Managing Director of Google SubSaharan Africa said, “Google is committed to supporting Africa's digital transformation and we are excited to see the impact of the landing of Equiano in Namibia. We've worked with experts - Paratus Group (and Telecom Namibia) in Namibia - to guarantee that Equiano has the greatest potential effect in Namibia and throughout Africa.” Telecom Namibia Chief Executive Officer, Dr Stanley Shanapinda said, “the Google Equiano Cable shore landing is a major step in the development of our national telecommunications infratructure. This cable will become a critical element in meeting Namibia's current and future international connectivity demands, as the cable incorporates new technology that enables approximately 20 times more network capacity than the current WACS cable. The cable will ensure redundancy for Telecom Namibia and offers an alternative when other routes may be impaired. The volume of information moving around the world has grown exponentially, particularly due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and thus, the cable will further strengthen and enhance the backbone of modern communications in Namibia.” Shanapinda further said, “improved connectivity will accelerate job creation. Between 2022 and 2025, Equiano is expected to indirectly create 21,000 jobs in Namibia, driven by the expansion of the digital economy and associated business sectors. This is also in line with Namibia's long-term development framework – Vision 2030 – which positions ICT as a key pillar of the country's economy.”

disciplines, right here at the doorsteps of their homes. According to Iipinge, the Swakopmund Campus will mainly host the state-of-the-art fully-fledged Schools of Engineering, Marine, Logistics and Health Sciences that will implement various programmes in the areas of Engineering, Marine Sciences, Commercial Studies, Hospitality and Tourism amongst others. The lead consultant for this project is IDP Engineering Consultancy, the estimated cost of the project is allegedly N$1.6 billion. The campus will be inaugurated in 2028. In addition, the Campus will host a Life Skills Centre to accommodate the growing number of young people who need different entrepreneurial skills and contribute towards employment creation in the region and elsewhere. Iipinge further said, the viability of this campus is reinforced by the creation of Research Facilities that will enable the growth of the Marine Sciences and the Agricultural industry. The Swakopmund Campus will be a world-class facility that will facilitate the growth of Swakopmund Municipality and make it an ideal town for Educational Tourism given the exponential increase in the population of the Town that the institution will bring. The Swakopmund Campus will be an environmentally friendly campus that will make full utilization of renewable energy systems with aesthetics that will blend in with the surrounding community outlook. The reason why Welwitchia Health Centre chose Swakopmund for its second campus in the Erongo region is that Swakopmund Municipality was the first to give the centre land and Swakopmund is a tourism destination. At the occasion of the groundbreaking, the Mayor of Swakopmund Louisa Kativa also handed over a signed contract for the plot. The Plot is situated on Erf 3342, Extension 9 in Ocean View, Swakopmund.

Erongo Tourism Forum Established Rudi Bowe

The ERONGO TOURISM FORUM (ETM) recently established and launched in Swakopmund, is to implement the objectives of the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism(MEFT). ETF should support the National Sustainable Tourism Growth and Development Strategy (NSTGDS) and the National Tourism Investment Profile and Promotion Strategy (NTIPPS) in the region. The ETF will be working together with 13 other associations and businesses responsible in developing regional tourism opportunities, find collaborative and creative ways to draw more visitors to our region while also marketing the region a key tourism destination. With cooperation, and innovation, mixed with unique and spectacular tourism attractions of the Erongo region – which includes eco, wildlife, cultural and adventure tourism – the region could become one of the most competitive tourist destinations in Africa. The 15-member forum, with Hon Neville Andre, Governor of the Erongo Region serve as the Chairperson, represent key stakeholders in tourism that include representatives from the tour and hospitality operators, regional and local authorities, police, home affairs and immigration, environment and tourism, airports and IT specialists. Governor of the Erongo Region and Chairperson of the Erongo Tourism Forum Hon Neville Andre said at the launch of the ETF that the industry should become flexible in order to continue operating in critical times while maintaining its workforce. Andre said “Covid-19 pandemic has changed the momentum and landscape of tourism, and that the way to navigate this key national economic industry to a better place than before will take the cooperation of all stakeholders. Andre added that difficult but valuable lessons were learned during the peak of Covid and the subsequent emergency interventions that resulted in putting the tourism and hospitality industry in intensive care. He said,“the pandemic and lockdowns resulted in massive job losses in the hospitality sector, which highlighted the risk and instability of the traditional full-time job model.” “The reality is that, with ongoing uncertainty and external disruptions threatening the status quo, flexibility has become critical. Covid was a learning curve to all of us and we should start thinking of flexible ways to operate within any pandemic without disadvantaging the sector, and the employment rate, and not risking people's lives at the same time,” Andre explained. According to the governor, locals were responsible in keeping many of the hospitality businesses alive during the peak of the pandemic. “Therefore, more emphasis should be put on the

The members of the Erongo Tourism Forum development and promotion of local tourism.” And re-urge residents and citizens in the region and the country to also start visiting local tourist facilities before going outside the country. “First know your country and appreciate what you have in your country before going outside and in doing so will also grow the local economy.” According to him, the sector is also key in addressing poverty, unemployment, and community empowerment, which is in line with national social-economic objectives. “We must rebuild and look to the future with hope.” “Tourism is everyone's business,” he said. The Deputy Director at the Ministry of Tourism, Elise Hashikutuva said that the main objective of the forum is to oversee and coordinate regional tourism development,

economic growth, and equitable benefit distribution from tourism. Hashikutuva said, “Some of the key functions of the forum is to act as a platform for information sharing regarding tourism development and growth and identify challenges of tourism development in the region. “The ETF should advise the government and the private sector on possible solutions to address these as well as develop and grow tourism in the region and the implementation and monitoring of a strategic action plan for the region,” Hashikutuva said. The member of the forum who will serve a three year term has identified domestic and regional tourism as means to revitalize the tourism industry.

Namport stands to benefit as the Zambian Government lifts the Two years ago, the Zambian government banned the felling ban on Timber Exports and transport of a tree known locally as mukula - Pterocarpus chrysothrix, a relative of rosewood - in a bid to curb its rapid loss fueled by growing demand in Asia. The wood is highly prized on the international market, making it one of the trees most heavily logged by illegal harvesters. Since August 2021 there have been no timber exports from Zambia, due to the ban the new government imposed. The claim was that they needed to audit the sector to remove illegal practices and bad actors. This action had a reducing impact on corridor volumes for the first and second quarters of 2022. However, with effect from May 2022, the government announced the lifting of the export ban on timber exports, this ban has now permitted the affected in the industry to start obtaining timber export licenses. This provides the Port of Walvis Bay an opportunity to handle in excess of 600 x 40-foot-long containers of timber in the next six months and double the quantity in the next 12 months. Timber has already started flowing into Walvis Bay by two notable companies; Maiba tree enterprises and Sikale woods. More companies will follow suit as the process of issuing timber export licenses is slow currently due to strict measures the Zambian government has instituted. Between 2001 and 2014, Zambia lost more than 1 million hectares – an area roughly the size of the Republic of Lebanon in western Asia of three types of Pterocarpus trees, according to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Before the timber ban, harvesters needed a license to cut trees, which specified the location, tree species and estimated fees to be paid to the authorities. But because of the ever-growing interRudi Bowe national demand for timber, together with the high prices of the wood fetches, most harvesters have been felling the forests With the additional registration process completed and registration of candidates without a license and exporting them illegally to Asia. done, the date for the Erongo regional council's Swakopmund constituency byelections is slated for Friday, 12 August.

Date set for by-election The by-elections that are in line with the Regional Councils Act, stipulates a new representative must be elected within three months, and was initiated after the position of Swakopmund constituency councilor became vacant when Ciske Smith-Howard of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC)'s representation on the Erongo Regional Council was terminated. Chief electoral officer of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), Theo Mujoro said the provisional voters roll for the Swakopmund constituency consist of 36 997 voters after 1 716 eligible voters were added during the supplementary registration process that took place early June. Mujoro said, “the nomination process for the candidates took place between 17 June and 2 July. We applaud all nominated candidates for heeding the call to comply with the relevant legal provisions during the nominated period. The ECN will invite companies to submit bids for the printing of ballot papers as per the guidelines of the Public Procurement Act. The awarding of the bid will take place on 18 July after which all nominated candidates will be invited to verify the correctness of the final ballot paper sample on 29 July,” Mujoro explained. Mujoro said all sensitive materials for the by-election will be dispatched

According to Mujoro eight candidates, including one independent candidate, have registered to run for the Erongo regional council's Swakopmund constituency byelection. Rössing Uranium Plants 60 Trees In Honour Of World Environment Day Rössing Uranium in partnership with Arandis Town Council and Wesbank Transport, a division of FP du Toit, planted 60 trees at three schools in Arandis, as part of the annual World Environment Day celebration which is celebrated annually on 5 June. In order to assist the schools with maintaining the trees, 10 watering cans were also donated to each school. Over the past years, Rössing Uranium has taken part in the World Environment Day celebration as an opportunity to promote environmental awareness and showcase environmental work to our communities. Speaking at the occasion, Rössing Uranium's Environmental Specialist, Stefaans Gaeseb, said that areas were identified at the schools for trees to be planted so as to reduce impact of strong wind that may damage properties and cause soil erosion. Planting trees also helps with oxygen circulation in the atmosphere. Gaeseb explained that one of the simplest things to do to help protect the Earth is to plant trees. Trees provide food and oxygen, they help save energy, clean the air and help combat climate change. “This day serves as a reminder to all that our world is fragile, that we need to do better collectively – it is a steadfast reminder that Earth is all we have and for us to protect our e n v i r o n m e n t . “ We cannot stress enough that time is irreversible, but we can start now by growing trees, greening our cities, re-building our gardens and cleaning up rivers and our communities,” he said, adding that “we are the generation that can make a difference. The time is now to set things right. To prevent climate tragedies, deforestation, pollution and littering, stop biodiversity loss, we all need to do our part in protecting what is left and repair what has been damaged.”

Also speaking at the occasion, Regional Councillor for Arandis Constituency, Benitha Imbamba in her keynote address stressed the importance of preserving the environ-

ment, and planting of trees. “This is indeed a good gesture by the sponsor to donate trees, as they will serve as shade and wind breakers during sunny and windy days,” she said.

Backyard Ultra at Uis Rudi Bowe Nico and Riana Scholtz with Namibia Ultra Trails will host the first Backyard Ultra in Namibia on 23 July in Uis. A Backyard Ultra is a form of an ultra-marathon race, where competitors are given one hour to run a loop of 6 706 metres, starting a new loop on top of the hour, every hour. The co-director of the Backyard Ultra Riana Scholtz said most backyarders are runners who participate for the love of running. They may want to push their own boundaries, train for longer races, test nutrition and gear, or just enjoy the perks of running in a pack with like-minded people for hours on end. Scholtz said, “Several incredibly talented long-distance runners have already entered, and everyone is excited to see what will unfold as they battle it out in this 'race without a finish line.” Scholtz added on a Backyard Ultra course, there needs to be at least two runners for the event to continue, so runners with big distance aspirations are also supportive and encouraging to their fellow runners. “Runners who manage to do 24 loops (24 hours) will make it to the finalists' list for a spot in the 2023 world championships at Big's Backyard Ultra, the original event, in Tennessee in the United States,” Scholtz said. On the male side, the competition comprises acclaimed runners such as Keletso Nyathi, a medical doctor from Windhoek with a number of big international ultra marathons under his belt. Some of his accomplishments include The North Face 100 in Thailand, Ultra Trail 100 in Hong Kong, as well as the 2021 locally organized Gondwana 7 Marathons in 7 Days. In this potentially 24 hour-plus run he will face off to challengers such as Hannes Smit, also not new to the ultra-marathon scene, and who have twice completed the Four Deserts (Namibia) 250 km race. Raising the competition there is talent such as ultra marathon veterans Johan Bronkhorst, Andre Ross and Frans Amakali, all multiple Comrades ultra marathon finishers, who are willing and very able to battle it out for last person standing with the aim of reaching at least the 100 Mile (160 km) mark over 24 hours for the winning prize of N$10 000 cash. Backyard Ultra is already sporting a number of accomplished Namibian ultra runners, and still growing. Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) Namibia is the presenting partner of this inaugural race organized by Riana and Nico Scholtz from Namibia Ultra Trails. The proceeds of an auction of accommodation packages from esteemed Namibian lodges and high-end hampers from Namibian brands such as Namibian Breweries and Cymot will all go towards Save The Rhino Trust, Namibia. The Brandberg Rest Camp at Uis will serve as the race venue, which will also prepare scrumptious meals for the weekend. Entries are still open and available on www.NamibiaUltraTrails.com.

Press Release

African Genesis Archery in Namibia (AGA NAM) African Genesis Archery in Namibia (AGA NAM) 2022 Africa on Friday, 1 July, 32 archers and quite a few of their parents (some representing Namibia in the Adult group) arrived at SKW to build an indoor Bulls' Eye range and a 3D Animal range outside. The archers were superstars and then team building started - shooting at watermelons, following an instruction in the opposite way and including everyone when making patterns with string against the clock. Team captains for the 3 teams - National team, Development team and the AAG team were elected. Big thanks to the Pupkewitz Foundation who sponsored pizza for every archer in the evening. On Saturday morning, the teams were ready for the welcoming and the flag ceremony, over Zoom - bringing together archers from Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa (this year's host). Just after 8 shooting started and all teams shot a little more than we have recently - two 3D Animal rounds and three Bulls' Eye rounds. After some initial struggle with connectivity, shooting went very well and by the evening, the Namibian teams knew that they were in the Knockouts for the third place the next day. Indoor shooting might be wind free, but light plays a very important role. The animals were rearranged for this tournament. The practice rounds were full of horrified faces as the hyena on 15m proved to be harder to hit than expected. Lunch again was sponsored for

the archers by the Pupkewitz Foundation. Such support is really appreciated. On Sunday morning, everyone was excited and ready to shoot. The Knockouts were a little time consuming as every country shot on the South African command. Getting archers from four countries ready at the same time was a challenge. The archers should be commented on their punctuality and their willingness to help at all times. The AAG received a Bronze, the National team shot very well, but could only secure a bronze and the Development team achieved Gold. After a very successful tournament, the Afro Pumps team should be mentioned for bringing all the necessary equipment to SKW and then coming to collect everything again on Sunday afternoon. Thank you to SKW for making their premises available to AGA Namibia. Special thanks go to the parents who drove from all over the country so that their children could participate, not minding the cold weather or the expenses involved. To everyone who helps before the time and during the tournament, thank you - without these invisible hands, this weekend would not have been possible.
