Publisher’s Letter
Summer is here once again in all of its sun-baked glory! Across our beautiful Gulf Coast, poolside cookouts and beach vacations beckon. But as we immerse ourselves in all the fun this season has to offer, it’s also an invitation to prioritize our wellness. In fact, there’s no better time of year to start an outdoor exercise regimen, stock up on vibrant, wholesome foods at the local farmer’s market, and recommit to your own self-care. This issue of Natural Awakenings is all about Men’s Health Month, but the insights are for everyone. So, pour yourself a refreshing tropical fruit smoothie—and let’s dive right in!
Our feature article focuses on the complexities of “Solving Mental Health Issues in Men.” Due to societal expectations or masculine stereotypes, men often feel like they must remain strong and stoic in the face of challenges, which could prevent them from seeking help. However, according to a report from the Survey Center on American Life, 15 percent of men have no close relationships, which can lead to all sorts of mental health concerns like depression, anxiety, loneliness, substance abuse, or suicidal thoughts. To combat this, men need resources specifically tailored to help them feel safe communicating emotions, accessing treatment, and creating a healthier, more nuanced view of masculinity.
Next, we’ll discuss the link between holistic nutrition and cancer prevention in this month’s “Conscious Eating” article. The American Cancer Society estimates nearly 30,000 new cases of prostate cancer in 2024 alone, but consuming a variety of nutrient-rich foods can lower those risk factors significantly. Focus on plant-based vegetables, fruits, proteins, and whole grains—some of the best cancer-resistant options include broccoli, cauliflower, radishes, grapefruit, tomatoes, beets, and Brussels sprouts. It’s also a smart idea to limit refined sugars, alcohol, processed meats, and artificial ingredients. These habits will help create a foundation for longevity and protect you from cancer or other chronic diseases. Both men and women are susceptible to muscle loss after reaching their 40s, so it’s crucial to preserve muscular strength and counteract deterioration at this stage in life. This month’s “Fit Body” article is all about the importance of “Building Quality Muscle” with a resistance training workout. Squats, lunges, rows, crunches, bench presses, and similar forms of exercise will help increase muscle tone, bone density, core balance, and range-ofmotion. This can lower your risk of falls, injuries, limited mobility, or weakness as you age. I hope this content piques your interest for all the wellness inspiration that awaits you in our latest issue. As always, I want to express my sincere gratitude to you for coming back here each month and letting us be a part of your commitment to holistic living. Enjoy this first month of summer, and we will chat again soon in July!

Why Reiki Is Useful in Daily Life
Reiki, a Japanese healing technique, has become globally known for its potential to enhance physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Rooted in the concept of channeling universal life energy, Reiki is administered by hovering hands over the recipient’s body. This practice aims to balance the energy centers, or chakras, within the body to increase relaxation, stress reduction, and healing.
One of the key benefits of Reiki lies in its ability to alleviate both stress and anxiety. In our fast-paced world, Reiki offers a sanctuary of calmness and relaxation. This helps reduce tension stored in the body, allowing you to experience a sense of peace and tranquility.
By restoring energetic balance, Reiki can enhance the body’s self-healing wisdom to stimulate recovery from illness or injuries. Many recipients have shown improvements in various conditions, including chronic pain, insomnia, and fatigue. Reiki can also release negative emotions, such as anger, fear, or sadness to promote a sense of joyfulness, gratitude, and inner peace.
In daily life, Reiki is a valuable tool for self-care and stress management. Whether used for relaxation, healing, or personal growth, Reiki offers a gentle but powerful pathway to holistic well-being. On June 9, Sana Sana Wellness will teach a Level One Reiki Certification class in the Wild Ginger Apothecary studio. The cost to attend is $150, and pre-registration is required
Wild Ginger Apothecary is a high-vibrational boutique in Gulf Gate. Location: 6557 Superior Ave., Sarasota. Hours: Monday–Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information and to register, call 941-312-5630 or visit WildGingerApothecary.com
Anti-Aging Seminars Zoom with Dr. Anna
Dr. Anna Baker, DOM, invites you to join her interactive anti-aging seminars via Zoom on June 12 and 21, both at 1:30 p.m. She will showcase her Faces by Dr. Anna acupuncture facelift and her muscle retightening Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna. Please call 941-924-2723 to access the meeting ID number. If you cannot attend live, Dr. Anna will send you a link to watch at your own convenience.

An initial package of 10 treatments is required, and the results last for 18 months before you will need a one-treatment touchup to maintain the lift.
During these seminars, Dr. Anna will show photographed results on people of all ages. In addition, she will discuss her proprietary Pearl Cream by Dr Anna that offers the same muscle retightening as her acupuncture facelift in a slower, more gradual process. Her Pearl Cream is an anti-aging serum made from real pearls and Chinese herbs without any preservatives. Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna is also available as a muscle tightening body lotion, a men’s anti-aging line, and a sports performance line.

NEW RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CONCUSSION TREATMENT
The conventional treatment for concussions has been to rest in a dark room until symptoms go away. Research has consistently shown that strict rest is not beneficial and may significantly delay recovery, but the medical community has been slow to change its ways. Organizations like the Concussion Alliance are working to change that by educating patients and providers.
The Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport, a report prepared by an international panel of experts, recommends active rehabilitation. Immediately following a concussion, the report suggests continuing daily living activities, sleeping as needed and reducing screen time for 48 hours. Patients can return to light-intensity activity such as walking during the initial 24 to 48 hours following a concussion, provided the activity does not more-than-mildly exacerbate symptoms. After the first 48-hour period, the intensity of physical activity can be increased, so long as symptom exacerbation remains mild.
In a concussion, the brain jiggles and twists, causing the neurons—long, cordlike cells that transmit signals—to stretch and fray. During recovery, the brain reroutes signals around the damaged neurons. The healing process may result in exhaustion, headaches, feeling emotionally drained and having trouble performing simple tasks. Physical activity aids the healing process.

How to Eliminate Joint Pain and Stay in the Game
by Laura Korman, DC
According to a 2022 poll from the University of Michigan, 70 percent of adults, ages 50-80, suffer from joint pain. What’s more, 55 percent rated their pain as moderate to severe, while 49 percent agreed these symptoms limit their usual or regular activities. Most concerning of all, 45 percent reported feeling joint pain on a daily basis.
While many of us have experienced acute pain due to an injury, accident, or infection at one time or another, this pain generally heals in a reasonable amount of time. However, chronic pain can last longer than six months. It might start as an injury or illness that never completely resolves, or it might occur slowly over time, with no explicable cause.
Chronic pain can not only be debilitating for the body, but it can also lead to serious emotional issues such as depression, anxiety, fear, and isolation. Let’s discuss the most common types of chronic joint pain, then explore some overlooked causes, and finally, dive into a few simple and natural solutions to this often devastating condition.
Chronic joint pain is referred to as arthritis. This word comes from the Greek prefix arthro-, meaning “joint,” and the suffix -itis, meaning “inflammation.” Osteoarthritis, commonly referred to as “wear and tear” arthritis, is the most common form of this condition. It usually develops from an old injury, poor body mechanics or malalignment, scoliosis, or repetitive joint overuse.
Osteoarthritis will most often affect weight bearing joints such as the spine, hips, knees and feet. Symptoms occur over time, and are classically unilateral. This means the issue will affect either the right or left knee, for example, but not both—at least initially. Pain from osteoarthritis is deep and aching, often accompanied with stiffness or grinding. It tends to worsen after periods of inactivity, such as sleeping, or sitting. However, it can also become irritated after overuse, such as playing golf, pickleball, exercising, housework, or even just walking.
Another common form of arthritis is due to an auto-immune condition, as seen in rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or psoriatic arthritis. In these cases, the body’s immune system malfunctions, attacking and destroying the joints, which leads to pain or deformity. This type of arthritis can occur either gradually or suddenly, commonly after an infection or toxic exposure.
The symptoms will often be worse than osteoarthritis, and are symmetrical and bilateral in nature, affecting both sides of the body. Multiple joints will bear the effects of pain or inflammation, and the symptoms generally worsen with movement of the impacted area. There are over 80 different auto-immune conditions, and many of them continue to exacerbate without a diagnosis.
Conventional arthritis treatment aims to reduce the pain, but minimal effort is put towards examining its root cause. Medications can effectively mask pain, but many of them also have side-effects, and some are dangerously addictive. Repeatedly blocking pain can cause us to become unaware of specific movements and lifestyle factors that worsen the condition. This could prevent us from identifying the cause of our pain. In fact, it can even result in long-term disability.
Many believe that arthritis is a normal part of aging or the result of an overactive lifestyle. This can lead us to assume that nothing can be done to eliminate the pain or slow its damage. However, that is simply untrue. I have treated patients with chronic pain for 35 years, and my goal remains to always educate and empower my patients with natural solutions to take an active role in their own healing journeys. Here is what I share with my patients to eliminate or reduce their chronic pain.
The standard American diet (or SAD, for short) is an inflammatory and toxic diet, full of refined sugars, processed ingredients, chemicals, and genetically modified organisms. I think many of us, including physicians, underestimate the power of nutrition to prevent illness, decrease pain or inflammation, and promote longevity.
Eating whole, nutrient-dense foods (organic and locally grown, if possible). Choose pasture-raised, grass-fed animals and dairy proteins, wild-caught fish or seafood, and healthy fats such as olive, avocado, or coconut oils. This will effectively reduce inflammation in the body and joints. You’ll also want to avoid sugar or other sweeteners, corn syrup, and inflammatory oils like corn, soybean, canola, sunflower, and safflower oils. Many grains, like gluten, are also inflammatory and can increase joint pain in those with auto-immune arthritis. Others can be sensitive to dairy, eggs, or nightshade vegetables such as tomatoes, bell peppers, and eggplant.
Dehydration is another overlooked cause for chronic joint pain. Staying hydrated by drinking half your weight in ounces of water each day will help remove toxins, lubricate joints, decrease inflammation, and aid in the body’s temperature regulation. For example, a person who weighs 150 pounds will need to consume 75 ounces of water daily. This does not include coffee, tea, sweetened beverages, or alcohol, as these dehydrate the body.
Remember to increase your water intake when spending time outside in the heat or when exercising. Avoid drinking water from plastic bottles, as many of these contain chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA), a known hormone disruptor. Plastic bottles are also harmful to the environment, and are polluting our oceans. Drink clean, pure, filtered water from a glass or stainless-steel container. Consider an under-the-counter reverse osmosis system. You can also infuse lemon, lime, or other fruits into your water for more nutrition and flavor.
Finding the root causes of inflammation also involves running specific blood tests, often overlooked and rarely included in annual blood panels. Six of my favorite blood tests are homocysteine, insulin, vitamin D, CRP, serum ferritin, and an omega-6/omega-3 ratio test. As a functional medicine practitioner, I find it vital to maintain these markers of inflammation at optimal levels (not just “normal” lab values). This will not only minimize joint pain, but decrease the risk for other chronic illnesses as well. Testing and removing food sensitivities (such as gluten, grains, dairy, eggs, or soy) can also benefit patients suffering from auto-immune
16 Sarasota/Manatee Edition www.nasrq.com
conditions or poor gut health. Avoid the use of herbicides, pesticides, toxic household cleaners, and chemically-laden personal care items as well. These products are unsafe—both for our health and for the planet.
Exercise is another important factor to help reduce and manage chronic joint pain. Many arthritis sufferers avoid exercise, but even the gentlest of movements such as water aerobics, stationary biking, or isometric exercises can increase circulation, improve strength, and minimize pain and inflammation. Some other options include massage or physical therapy, gentle chiropractic manipulation, or deep tissue laser and Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field Therapies. This modality uses specific light waves or pulsing charged ions to optimize cellular health, regenerate tissues, restore normal function, and allow the body to heal itself naturally.
While some joint stiffness is a common part of aging, you do not have to live with chronic, debilitating pain. Take these crucial steps to prevent or manage chronic arthritis. Consume an anti-inflammatory diet with nutritious, whole foods, hydrate with pure and clean water, and exercise with gentle movements on a daily basis.
It’s also important to remove food sensitivities, nutritional deficiencies, environmental toxins, and metabolic imbalances that could be contributing to your pain. These strategies can improve quality of life and empower you to embrace the healthiest, most active version of yourself.

Men: Your Health Matters.
How Acupuncture Can Benefit Prostate
and
Mental Health
by Leo Gallego, DOM, LAc
June is Men’s Health Month. While statistics show that men have begun to pay more attention to their health over the last 10 years, there is still more progress to make. Men historically do not share hard emotions—and most dangerous of all, they tend to ignore medical symptoms until the severity of pain affects their daily lives. According to the tenets of Acupuncture and East Asian Medicine, it’s critical to
focus on illness prevention and consistently adjust lifestyle habits for optimal health maintenance. These goals are achievable with natural, holistic treatment options.
For example, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death for men in the United States. In the year 2023, approximately 35,000 deaths were due to prostate dysfunction—that’s slightly more than the entire population of the city New Smyrna Beach. These statistics are not meant to scare you, but rather to encourage you to
advocate for your own health and ultimately push back against these statistics. Men often feel invincible. “I never thought that would happen to me,” is a common refrain I hear in the clinic where I practice. Fortunately, there are numerous action steps you can take right now to ensure a healthy future.
Some men do not understand the consequences of overlooking your prostate health. Size reduction, erectile dysfunction, urinary difficulties, or severe depression can all take root in the absence of prostate health. Natural supplements such as ashwagandha, lemon balm, vitamin B12 and l-theanine can assist you in alleviating these symptoms. However, please consult with your healthcare team prior to starting any supplements.
Of course, natural treatment modalities such as acupuncture, along with consistent exercise, are excellent places to start. In 2023, over six million men reported suffering from depression. As you can imagine, countless others suffer in silence, but there is no shame in asking for help. You deserve it, and we at the Sarasota Center for Acupuncture and Nutrition are here to empower you on the road back to wellness. By combining the 5,000-year-old practices of acupuncture and herbal medicine, along with modern scientific research, we can offer you painless, comfortable, and successful treatment options.
Acupuncture is well-known for treating any form of acute or chronic pain, but it does not stop there. This modality can also help manage anxiety or depression, restore prostate health, achieve healthy weight loss, optimize digestion, quit smoking, or alleviate cancer symptoms. Contact us to schedule a consultation today, we are here for this community.

Scars: Secret Source of Pain
by Eric Winder, DC
Scars are visible reminders of past injuries, but they can also cause problems long after the initial trauma, even when we don’t realize it. Pain from scar tissue is often missed because the scar itself might not hurt. Instead, scars cause pain by distorting the sheet-like connective tissue in our bodies called fascia. This can lead to muscle imbalance and joint instability, which often results in chronic pain. Fortunately, releasing internal restrictions in scars can provide relief by restoring normal movement to the affected fascia.
New Scar, New Pain
A patient, whom I will refer to as Terry, is a cellist. She came to my office for treatment of pain and tension near her right shoulder blade. The pain started after healing from a skin biopsy in the right shoulder, then subsequently intensified due to the shoulder movement of playing her cello. Terry believed that a scar was the source of her pain and tension, but nothing she tried offered any relief. Finally, the discomfort began to inhibit her playing.
Upon examining Terry’s scar, I found noticeable restrictions, compared to the other skin around it. Some of the muscles between her spine and shoulder blade were abnormally tight, and pressing on them gave Terry sharp discomfort. When I tested the muscles for strength, they were quite weak. After stimulating the scar with precise pressure, those muscles relaxed and became less tender to pressure. This confirmed the scar was a source of pain and tension.
After about five minutes of precise manual therapy to soften the scar, her muscle tension melted away. Retesting the weak muscles showed strength improvements as well. Terry has since resumed playing the cello with free, easy motions and no pain in her shoulder.
Old Scar, New Pain
Samantha came to my office with hip discomfort after lifting a heavy box. She thought the pain could be from a resulting muscle strain, but weeks later, she still experienced weakness and difficulty walking. My practice is focused on finding restrictions in connective tissue (especially fascia) that cause muscular imbalance and joint misalignment so I examined her thoroughly for fascia restrictions. Although she exhibited some mild in-
flammation in the hip area, I could not locate any significant restrictions. However, Samantha had visible loss of muscle tone and weakness in her left abdominal muscles. Searching for the source of this weakness, I found a line of fascia tension in her left rib cage, which she informed me was the line of a surgical scar. At age two, she had an enormous incision in the left side of her chest to allow for heart surgery.
The scar had remained painful her entire life, and was exquisitely tender to even light pressure. After testing the scar, I stimulated it with light pressure, then retested the strength of her abdominal muscles. They were much stronger, and movement at her left hip became less painful. The scar was large and, therefore, could not be completely released in just one treatment. However, partial release of the first treatment offered her enormous relief, and further treatments resolved her pain altogether.
It had never occurred to Samantha that a scar from her early childhood might still affect her in adulthood. Unbeknownst to her, the scar created weakness in her abdominal muscles that made it difficult for her to recover from a minor injury. She had, in fact, strained some muscles due to heavy lifting—but the restricted fascia from her old scar was the cause of continual stress and lack of healing in the strained area.
Referred Pain
Samantha’s story illustrates another potential element of pain that can be caused by scars. The pain can “refer” to somewhere distant from the scar, which makes it hard to know exactly where the pain is coming from. I see many cases where scars from abdominal surgeries, such as C-sections or appendectomies, cause distortions in the body’s web of fascia, which leads to hip muscle weakness. This can cause sciatica or knee pain, interfering with daily tasks.
Sometimes scars can even cause pain on the other side of the body. For example, an abdominal scar can cause weakness in the pelvis, which leads to misalignment in joints on the opposite side, resulting in low back pain or sciatica. This is why I examine all patients, from head to toe, and take a thorough history of their past injuries and surgeries. It is entirely possible for restrictions in fascia to have absolutely no pain of their own, while causing pain and dysfunction somewhere else in the body.
Easy Does It
Restriction in scar tissue is often painful to pressure, but effective fascia release can be gentle. Stiffness from a scar often responds to just ounces of hands-on pressure, restoring normal softness and pliability to the tissue. This improves both muscle tone joint stability. Scars that have felt dense for years can often be softened in just one treatment and completely restored to near-normal pliability in just two or three visits.
Types of scars most likely to activate pain (even when the scar itself is not painful) are those from the following surgeries: hysterectomy, C-section, hernia repair, hip or knee replacement, spinal fusion, or surgeries that implant hardware. I highly recommend an evaluation for scar tissue restrictions in any case of unexplained chronic pain where there is significant scar tissue not far from the pain area. For many, releasing scar tissue offers the kind of lasting relief they could not find anywhere else.

Kathleen Kurzydlo: My father is a well-known veterinarian here in town. He would tell me about the lack of variety in the local pet foods available, and how his clients could benefit with higher quality options. At this time, I was finishing my last year of college with an extensive background in retail. So, I took on the challenge and launched Pet Supply Center across the street from my father’s clinic in May of 1991.
We were the first pet-focused store in Sarasota to never actually sell pets. Our focus has always been on high-quality animal nutrition and keeping it affordable. When the store first opened, we sold 12 brands of pet food. Now, 33 years later, we’ve tripled in size, and we carry over 50 brands of pet food. We make special orders for our customers as well.
NA: Why is it important to focus on the quality, sustainability, and nutrient density of what our pets consume on a regular basis?
Kurzydlo: Food is preventative medicine—it’s as simple as that. Animals are subject to many of the same illnesses that humans deal with, so it’s crucial to feed animals high-quality, balanced nutrition. Dietary regimens are not one-size-fits-all either. Pets can have fluctuating nutritional needs over the course of their lifetime.

Celebrating Three Decades of Quality Pet Nutrition: Q&A
by Mary-Elizabeth Schurrer
It’s no secret: Nutrition is a bedrock of holistic wellness. The foods we consume can either fuel us with energy and bolster our health or increase our risk of chronic illness. In other words, quality and nutrient density matter—both for ourselves and the pets we call family members. So, how can we make sure the ingredients we serve our furry friends will protect and sustain their well-being? To answer this question, I turned to Kathleen Kurzydlo, who has been running Pet Supply Center right here in Sarasota for the past 33 years.
Natural Awakenings: What motivated you to open Pet Supply Center back in 1991, and how has the business grown over these past 33 years?
For example, young dogs can eat foods with higher fat and protein levels. But as dogs enter their senior years, they often require lower fat and higher fiber diets with moderate protein. The higher the quality of ingredients in the food, the healthier it will be for your pets. Look for human-grade, organic, and non-GMO options.
Also, as a general rule, if you see frequent advertising for a certain pet food, it’s likely not a wholesome choice. Companies will often allocate more money toward those advertisements than the actual food quality itself.
There are also some concerns within this industry about the sustainability of certain traditional pet food sources, such as beef and chicken. I have come across interesting research being done on insects, seaweed, and algae as alternative protein sources.
NA: How has the holistic wellness community here in Sarasota embraced the Pet Supply Center during all this time you’ve been operating?
20 Sarasota/Manatee Edition www.nasrq.com
Kurzydlo: My father, “Dr. K,” practiced both conventional and Eastern veterinary medicine, using acupuncture and Chinese herbs to treat his patients. I saw how effective this was, and I have always encouraged customers to seek alternative forms of medicine.
More than 30 years later, it’s wonderful to see how mainstream these treatments are becoming. Pet Supply Center has been blessed with many holistic practitioners as customers, which makes for enjoyable and educational conversations at the front counter.
NA: What do you love most about helping local pet owners make informed, thoughtful decisions for the health of their furry family members?
Kurzydlo: Watching someone’s pet thrive is the best part of this job. We work with a number of veterinarians in town to help with nutritional recommendations for sick animals. So, when a customer tells us, “My dog feels so much better now,” or, “ My cat is making a full recovery,” it’s such a fulfilling reward!
Kathleen Kurzydlo is the owner of Pet Supply Center, located at 3558 Webber Street, Sarasota. The store hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 941-925-4376 or visit PetSupplyCenterSarasota.com.

Men, It’s Time to Prioritize Your Health
by Dr. Fred Harvey, Medical Director of Functional Medicine Florida
Men, we need to talk about wellness. The statistics on men’s health in America are alarming. Fourteen adult males still smoke, and another 10 percent vape or chew tobacco. Meanwhile, 30 percent admit to consuming five or more alcoholic drinks in one day over the past year.
Only 28 percent meet federal exercise guidelines, while two-thirds are overweight, and 42 percent are obese. If your waist measures 40
inches or more, now is the time to take notice. Men tend to ignore symptoms and visit the doctor less frequently than women, but it’s crucial to take personal responsibility for your own health.
We understand the causes of many degenerative illnesses, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, dementia, and autoimmune conditions like COVID-19 or rheumatoid arthritis. This knowledge enables us to care for ourselves to reduce the symptoms or even prevent these conditions altogether. While obesity itself isn’t the direct cause of issues like severe COVID-19 or dementia, the toxins and lifestyle factors that contribute to obesity are.
Pesticides, herbicides, artificial sweeteners, and food colorings are inflammatory and can damage the beneficial bacteria in our guts, which leads to illness. Exposure to these substances is directly related to a risk of diabetes, obesity, Parkinson’s disease, and heart disease. Sometimes exposure is unavoidable, as seen in Vietnam veterans who were sprayed with Agent Orange, an herbicide that causes heart disease. Many live with disabilities from Agent Orange, which is still sprayed on American farm crops today.
Optimal health begins with an inner journey. Stress reduction is crucial. Meditation is an excellent way to manage stress, and exercise can help alleviate depression and reverse Type-2 diabetes. Aim for 150 minutes of aerobic activity, like walking, each week— that averages out to just over 20 minutes each day.
A clean diet is foundational for wellness, too. Eat whole foods, cook from scratch, and choose organic ingredients whenever possible. Follow guides like the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen. Aim for a diet that’s 80 percent plant-based and 20 percent animal-based, similar to the Blue Zone diet known for promoting longevity. Include oily fish like salmon and sardines, grass-finished beef, and pastured poultry and eggs.
Take a multivitamin, vitamin D, and fish oil if you do not consume fish. Eat fermented foods for gut health and seaweed for iodine and minerals. Limit alcohol to no more than two ounces in one day or six ounces in one week, and eliminate nicotine completely. Hydrate with clean, filtered water and prioritize sleep, so the body can recover and repair.
At Functional Medicine Florida, my team and I specialize in functional testing to help identify the risks for illness before a formal diagnosis, especially if you experience vague symptoms that might be overlooked if your labs appear normal. We assess your toxin levels, sugar and insulin metabolism, and internal damage from toxins or free radicals.
With this comprehensive evaluation, we can create targeted, advanced nutritional therapies, provide intravenous nutrition, and offer medications such as hormone replacement. Our personalized treatments aim to promote vibrant energy and joyful living

Secrets to Summer Success Giving Youngsters the Vacation They Need
by Thais Harris, BCHN
For elementary school-aged kids, summer represents the promise of no homework and a whole lot of fun, but parents may be less enthusiastic. Figuring out how to keep children entertained, active and engaged while juggling work and household responsibilities, vacation schedules or camp sign-ups can be a little daunting.
Here are some suggestions for the best summer ever—one that combines playtime, nature encounters and fun with chores, rest and time to daydream. This holistic approach encourages a balance of physical, emotional and creative development so that children can enjoy a sense of spaciousness and possibility during the summer, feeling refreshed and ready for school when it resumes.
JUMPING JOY
Summer can be a perfect time to boost connection without having to plan something extraspecial like a trip or a fancy outing, says Caroline Griswold, a parenting coach and founder of Fertile Ground Parenting. She notes that kids are better able to appreciate parental attention and care when they see that their mom or dad is present and relaxed.
One way to promote free-flowing connection is by being playful or acting goofy with
children, Griswold suggests. Such carefree playfulness sends a strong message that all is well, and that we find our kids irresistibly delightful. If our goofiness makes the kids laugh, even better, because laughter can help residual tensions of the school year float away, making kids emotionally and mentally available for summer relaxation and fun.
“Play more music, especially if it makes everyone want to dance,” Griswold remarks. “When you dance, get goofy! If your kids laugh at you or roll their eyes, you’re on the right track. Our kids love to see us feeling relaxed and silly and might just join in.” Playing silly games is another winning option. Griswold recommends what she calls the “sock fight”, where family members put on socks and sit in a circle with their legs facing inward. The object of the game is to try to remove the socks off everyone else. “Hilarity ensues,” she promises.
RELISHING REST
It is important to encourage kids to take a break from the constant stimulation of screens and social media. This will help them recharge and reduce stress. “Unstructured playtime is crucial for children to develop creativity and problem-solving skills,” says Dr. Michael Rich, associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and director of the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital. Such free time enables kids to explore their interests at their own pace.
“Mom, I’m bored,” are not words we often welcome, but there is an increased opportunity for creativity that arises out of boredom, according to a 2014 UK study at the University of Central Lancashire. Allowing a little of it for our kids can make them more open to discovery and inspiration.
CRAVING CREATIVITY
Activities that provide an outlet for self-ex-
pression, physical experience and emotional release while also advancing a child’s intellect can support harmony and balance in our children, says Joseph Cooney, a family doctor at Berkshire Center for Whole Health, in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Motor skill mastery and practicing dexterity through artistry and creativity is highly beneficial for the intellectual unfolding of children, nurturing their whole body and mind, he explains. Examples include playing with blocks, building structures, drawing, painting or fiddling with magnets.
NURTURING NATURE
Getting outside is a must for summering kids. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “There is increasing evidence that outdoor play environments containing natural elements may offer health benefits that come specifically from engaging in the natural world. Recent studies have demonstrated that a broad range of outcomes are related to access to, and contact with, nature, including increased physical activity, reduced obesity, decreased stress and improved mental health.”
A study published in Journal of Attention Disorders reported that children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder were able to concentrate better after taking a 20-minute walk in the park. Integrating outdoor activities like hiking or swimming can provide a refreshing break from indoor routines. For an even more immersive experience, outdoor treasure hunts or building a fairy-house with items found in nature can transform natural settings into playgrounds of make-believe and connect kids to the wondrous life forms they encounter.
MAKING MAGIC
By embracing a holistic approach, we can provide children with a summer experience that not only entertains, but also nurtures their physical, emotional and mental well-being. The secret to summer magic is to boost nonsensical energy at home, encourage unstructured playtime, integrate outdoor activities, foster creative endeavors and remember to allow for plenty of leisure.

Building Quality Muscle How Diet and Resistance Training Can Help
by JJ Virgin, CNS, CHFS
Muscles act like metabolic Spanx, holding everything in the body tighter, supporting joints to prevent injuries, keeping bones strong and helping the immune system remain resilient to infection. Skeletal muscle acts as an endocrine-producing organ, supporting a healthy metabolism and balancing hormones. Strong, healthy muscles help us feel better, move more easily and live more powerfully.
Once someone crosses the threshold into their 40s, there is a natural decline in muscle mass and strength, known as sarcopenia. Adults can lose 3 to 8 percent of muscle mass per decade after turning 30, with losses accelerating after 60. Preventing this decline and supporting quality muscle is key. “Muscle can be stimulated largely in two ways: first, through dietary protein, and second, through resistance,” explains Gabrielle Lyon, a board-certified family physician and author of Forever Strong.
OPTIMAL PROTEIN CONSUMPTION
The building blocks of protein fall into two categories: essential amino acids, which are necessary nutrients that the body cannot make on its own and must be acquired through dietary intake; and non-essential amino acids, which can be synthesized by the body from carbohydrates and other dietary sources. To promote muscle recovery and development, it is important to consume protein that contains all nine essential amino acids in optimal amounts throughout the day.
More than half of older adults are not getting enough protein, and sarcopenia may in-
crease their need for it. To offset age-related decline, every meal should contain a minimum of 30 grams of protein. Active people, including those that do resistance training, should target one gram of protein per pound of their ideal body weight daily.
The best animal proteins that offer all nine essential amino acids in the right balance include pasture-raised poultry and eggs, wild-caught seafood and grass-fed beef. Plant proteins often lack one or more crucial amino acid, so vegans or vegetarians should eat a minimum of 40 grams of protein per meal to reach an adequate intake.
Breaking an overnight fast with a protein-packed breakfast jumpstarts metabolism and provides more sustained energy during the day, fueling morning activities and preventing mid-morning crashes. A protein-rich dinner supports muscle recovery and helps the body rebuild during sleep.
BENEFITS OF RESISTANCE TRAINING
“The most important type of exercise is resistance training as you get older, because you need to build muscle," says Mark Hyman, a functional-medicine doctor whose
26 Sarasota/Manatee Edition www.nasrq.com
Fit Body
latest book, Young Forever, explores the secrets to longevity. “Without muscle, you become frail and dysfunctional.” Building muscle can improve the capacity for everyday activities, diminish the likelihood of chronic illnesses and decrease the risk of falls and frailty. Resistance training also improves bone density, metabolic health and overall quality of life.
RESISTANCE-TRAINING TIPS
• Target multiple muscle groups simultaneously with compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, bench presses, rows and overhead presses.
• Focus on lifting the maximum weight manageable while maintaining proper form to avoid injury.
• Gradually increase the resistance or intensity of exercises over time to continually challenge the muscles.
• Aim for two to four weekly resistancetraining sessions. Consistency and patience are the foundations for lasting strength and muscle-tone improvements.
• Engage all key muscle groups. For the upper body, try bench presses, overhead presses, dumbbell chest presses, pushups, pull-ups, bent-over rows, seated rows and lat pulldowns. To work the hips and thighs, try squats, lunges, deadlifts and step-ups. For core strength, consider planks, Russian twists and bicycle crunches.
• Perform two to four exercises for each muscle group, doing two to four sets for each exercise. Between sets, take 90- to 120-second rest breaks. Aim for eight to 15 repetitions per set.
REST AND RECOVERY
To prevent injuries or burnout, rest is crucial, allowing muscles to repair and rebuild. Give each muscle group 48 to 72 hours before targeting it again. It is nor-
mal to feel sore after a workout, but be mindful of the difference between soreness and pain. Soreness feels like mild, diffuse discomfort or stiffness and is a normal response to unfamiliar or intense exercise. Sharp, intense or persistent pain, particularly around a joint, indicates potential injury or overstrain.
On rest days, incorporate low-intensity, active-recovery activities like walking, yoga or swimming; try foam rolling, stretching and mobility exercises to improve flexibility and circulation; and consider meditation for mental-health benefits. Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep, which promotes tissue repair and growth-hormone release.
MONITORING PROGRESS
• To optimize strategies and identify areas for improvement, regularly measure the circumference of the biceps, chest, thighs, waist and hips.
• Keep track of the amount of weight, repetitions, sets and intensity of every exercise session.
• Track muscle mass and body-fat shifts with a body-composition scale and take consistent photos from various angles to document muscle definition and physique evolution.
STAYING THE COURSE
• Adjustments to diet and training programs may be necessary based on changing goals or feedback from tracking methods.
• If progress stalls, adjust training variables such as workout intensity or frequency.
• Use fluctuations in muscle mass or body fat to refine protein intake or overall macronutrient ratios.

Solving Mental Health Issues in Men Finding Meaning in Turbulent Times
by Dr. Reef Karim
Many men struggle with mental health issues, often experiencing debilitating emotional turmoil, alone and in silence. Evidence of this suffering can be quantified in a number of ways.
An epidemic of “despair deaths” related to alcoholism, substance abuse and suicide is documented to be worse in men than women. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American
males were almost four times more likely to commit suicide than women in 2021. The National Institutes of Health reports overdose mortality rates for opioids and stimulant drugs such as methamphetamine and cocaine are two to three times greater in men. While men use drugs at higher rates than women, this alone does not explain the gap in overdose deaths.
Loneliness has become such a widespread problem that the U.S. Surgeon General recently called it an epidemic and the World Health Organization noted, “The effect
of social isolation and loneliness on mortality is comparable to that of other wellestablished risk factors such as smoking, obesity and physical inactivity.” A 2021 report by the Survey Center on American Life stated that since 1990, the number of men saying they have no close friends has jumped from 3 percent to 15 percent.
MEN’S HEALTH AND THE PANDEMIC
COVID-19 incurred invisible costs such as increases in loneliness and mental health strain. Because men generally tend to spend less time and energy cultivating meaningful social relationships but still require structure to thrive, the pandemic was particularly destructive to them.
Roughly one out of three men in America under the age of 30 reported having no sex in the last year (a 30-year low), which is an obstacle to building meaningful relationships and families. Men have become not only socially disconnected, but also more vulnerable to following dangerous groups, influencers and others with extreme messaging. Men that fail to attach to partners, communities or careers may grow increasingly resentful and act out with volatility and unrest. An African proverb says, “The young men who do not feel the warmth of the tribe will burn down the village to feel it.”
ORIGINS AND CAUSES
According to Gabor Maté, a Canadian physician, author and speaker on addiction, stress and childhood development, “The
28 Sarasota/Manatee Edition www.nasrq.com Feature Story
issue is men’s value has been defined in a very narrow sense, and when the power is taken away from people, people have a loss of agency and loss of control, belonging, meaning and value. Men have become deprived of a sense of meaning and belonging, and that’s a function of the culture we live in.”
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
Men’s Mental Health Advocacy: Shame is the biggest barrier, preventing men from seeking help and expressing vulnerability. We need to talk and stop shaming them.
Male-Specific Mental Health Treatment: Men communicate differently, so counseling must address unexamined feelings. Research shows that physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression, so sports activities that draw men together such as softball, surfing or martial arts can offer a win-win situation.
Emotional Communication Training: Men need to develop their emotional communication skills, such as how to express themselves and share feelings through language, vulnerability and emotional expression, to deepen relationships. Men can be strong and competitive while also being authentic, vulnerable and emotionally connected.
Maté advises, “Men need to accept their vulnerability and work it through, and not reject it or be ashamed of it. And to let go of, ‘I can’t be self-reflective; I have to be tough,’ and that takes a lot of help and support. Men who come back from war will heal by accepting their vulnerability and spending time in support groups. Another thing we should do is show respect for the courage of those men who choose to explore their vulnerability.”
Embracing Universal Masculinity and Femininity: We must realize there is masculinity and femininity in all of us. Neither masculinity nor femininity is the problem—hatred, oppression and inequality of opportunity are the problems, no matter the gender or ratio of masculine and feminine qualities within the individual.
Defining Healthy Masculinity: Masculine qualities are traditionally thought of as bravery, strength, courage, confidence, ambition, competitiveness, self-reliance and decisiveness. These standards are hard to live up to, so the question is how do we adapt healthy masculinity to be equipped with skills for success in changing times.
Offer Coaching Before Therapy: Because men may be more defensive, less open, less vulnerable and more disconnected from their feelings than women, many will respond to coaching over therapy, which can be a gateway to start thinking about deeper purpose and well-being. A personal development program geared specifically
for men to build skills, share support and figure out how to excel in a changing world of technology and role-confusion may be helpful.
Encourage Inspiration and Purpose: Men need to find purpose by doing something meaningful that inspires them and makes them feel energized and appreciated. The more they feel helpless and stuck in survival mode, the more loneliness grows.
Psychologist Elizabeth Lombardo explains how a survival mentality doesn’t allow for meaningful and purposeful pursuit. “Perceived or real threats put you in survival mode, and when you’re in this mode, your limbic system takes over and you’re not thinking about purpose, connection or collaboration (things that can pull you out of this mode); you’re just trying to survive.”
Men’s health needs to become a movement that encourages males to be proud of their masculinity, but also add new skills in emotional communication and vulnerability to find purpose, improve their health and have the best chance for success in turbulent times.

Prostate Protection A Look at Holistic Cancer-Prevention Strategies
by Zak Logan
Most men don’t usually think about their prostate until they face an exam or experience symptoms such as pain or difficulties while urinating. These symptoms may be attributed to a benign enlargement of the gland, usually in older men, or to the presence of cancer cells. This understated reproductive player, which can be stimulated for sexual pleasure, is responsible for regulating urine flow, secreting semen and converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) at puberty.
Prostatic cancer usually affects men over 65. African American and Caribbean men are at a higher risk. Although the American Cancer Society predicts almost 300,000 new cases this year, overhauling the diet and getting regular exercise can make a difference. “It’s never too early to begin taking care of your prostate,” says Dennis Golden, a two-time cancer survivor and prostate-cancer coach from New Kent, Virginia.
PROACTIVE LIFESTYLE MEASURES
“In terms of lifestyle, everything is accumulative. If you put in junk, your body doesn’t know what to do with it and stores all those chemicals that don’t belong there, and it all eventually catches up with you someday. Read labels. If you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it,” says Golden, who went back to basics when he faced his frightening cancer diagnosis.
According to Jon Lanman, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Bend, Oregon, “In health care, we talk a lot about lifestyle change, and the reality is that lifestyle change is hard, and it takes time.” He advises tossing aside perfection and expecting slip-ups while committing to small changes that add up.
For Golden, eliminating restaurant food, excessive sodium and alcohol has been key. A fan of quick and easy meals, he relies on
pan cooking for healthy, delicious fare with plenty of steamed veggies. “There’s no reason to grab a burger or to eat out when you can have a meal finished in 25 minutes. I veered away from beef and incorporated more chicken and fish like salmon and fresh trout,” he explains, adding that biking also made a difference. Now 81, he pedals 25 miles several times a week.
DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS
Lanman notes, “There is no single miracle food, but I’d recommend limiting sugars and processed carbohydrates, as well as processed meats and red meats.” To amp up nutrients, he spotlights the Mediterranean and DASH diets that accentuate fiber from fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Lanman also recommends lycopene, a compound found in tomatoes, beets, radishes, cherries and pink grapefruit, which has shown promise in the treatment and prevention of prostate cancer.
The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) advocates cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, bok choy, kale and Brussels sprouts. Packed with the phytochemical glucoraphanin that targets cancer cells, broccoli is a heavy hitter, as well.
Recent research points to a number of nutritional guidelines. A 2021 study pub-
30 Sarasota/Manatee Edition www.nasrq.com
lished in European Journal of Public Health noted that nitrites as food additives were positively associated with prostate cancer risk. A 2022 study published in Frontiers in Nutrition also found a higher risk of the disease in those consuming red and processed meats.
In a 2022 study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers reported a lower risk of aggressive forms of prostate cancer in men under 65 that followed a diet rich in plant-based foods. After tracking men in a study for six years, a team of Harvard University scientists found that selenium supplementation was linked to a 65 percent lower occurrence of advanced prostate cancer, but it was contraindicated for individuals with high systemic levels of the mineral. Additional studies are underway to determine recommended dosages, but the researchers of this study suggested “a healthful diet that will provide good amounts of the mineral.”
RETHINK ALCOHOL
Both Lanman and Golden recommend eliminating alcohol altogether. While research on the correlation between alcohol consumption and prostate cancer is inconclusive, a 2022 meta-analysis published in the journal Biomolecules suggests that alcohol intake and the development of prostatic cancer can create the perfect storm when poor diet, folate and fiber deficiencies, advanced age, race, smoking, obesity, genetics, stress and other factors are also present.
MOOD REGULATION
According to the PCF, extreme stress can have a cumulative effect on the body, allowing prostate cancer to take root and grow. This is because the stress response can activate certain hormones that make it easier for tumors to grow and spread, while also negatively impacting the immune system.
To relieve stress and learn better coping skills, PCF suggests adopting relaxation and meditation practices, counseling, group therapy and exercise. For Golden, better health is a mindset. He endorses journaling and having good expectations daily. “Focus on the positives,” he says. Zak Logan is a freelance health writer dedicated to holistic living and getting back to basics.

A Dose of Life Force
The Ins and Outs of Intravenous Therapies
by Zak Logan
The human body can thrive when it receives and absorbs a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals, but due to an inadequate diet and compromised digestive system, the nutrients in food and oral supplements do not always hit their mark. The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health recommends 13 organic vitamins and 16 inorganic minerals for optimum health, but many of the water-soluble, vital substances such as vitamin C and the B-complex vitamins may not get absorbed by the body and wash out in urine.
This is where intravenous nutrient therapies (IVNT) can fill in the metabolic gaps. Pioneered by the late Dr. John Myers in the 1970s, IVNT puts nutrition directly into the body, bypassing the digestive process to replenish vital elements. “As individuals age or take medications, absorption rates can decrease to as low as 3 to 5 percent,” says Dr. Mitchell Ghen, a clinician, researcher and author specializing in intravenous (IV) nutrition and psychoneuroimmunology in Boca Raton, Florida. “Intravenous nutrition offers a solution by ensuring 100 percent absorption of essential nutrients.”
IV TREATMENTS
Beyond celebrity hype, claims of hangover cures and availability at
trendy gyms, IV therapy is on the rise at health facilities. A study published in Frontiers in Oncology in 2014 showed that intravenous vitamin C treatments minimize chemotherapy-related fatigue and other symptoms in cancer patients and improve quality of life.
IV vitamin therapy might offer improvement for individuals with nutrient deficiencies. “Anyone who has malabsorption issues will greatly benefit from IV nutrient therapy. Those issues may be caused by bariatric surgery, gut resections with reattachment or diverting colostomy, chronic pancreatitis, infections such as tropical sprue, parasites, tapeworm, or genetic diseases like celiac,” states Jeffrey Weiss, an internal medicine doctor, naturopath and medical director of the Infusion Center of New Jersey.
According to Weiss, cardiac chelation shows promise for cardiovascular disease. “Intravenous di-sodium EDTA [ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid] acts as a magnet for plaque, grabbing onto it and flushing it out via the urine. I see incredible results from cardiac chelation for heavy metal detox, atherosclerosis and even critical valvular (mitral and aortic) stenosism,” he explains.
For allergy sufferers, IVNT can be an alternative to over-the-counter fixes. “Seasonal allergies manifest with elevated histamine levels. Intravenous nutritional intervention, including combining highdose vitamin C, zinc and B vitamins with oral nutrients such as quercetin, vitamin D3 and curcumin, can effectively alleviate these symptoms,” explains Ghen. For asthmatic patients experiencing broncho-spasms triggered by allergies, he adds, “Intravenous doses of magnesium sulfate can provide relief by relaxing the smooth muscle, therefore improving respiratory symptoms.”
KEY NUTRIENTS AND SAFETY
For Ghen, optimal management of serious chronic diseases necessitates a broad approach. “Many of the disorders we encounter stem from underlying processes such as metabolic disturbances, infections, inflammation and oxidative stress,” he emphasizes. “While a multitude of nutrients can contribute to mitigating these disease processes, several components often stand out: vitamin C, valued for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties; B vitamins; magnesium; and the number one intracellular antioxidant, glutathione.”
Weiss also spotlights glutathione as a powerful antioxidant and chelator that binds to heavy metals, mold, organic pollutants and environmental toxins, noting, “Fibromyalgia has a strong environmental etiology, with all my patients testing for some form of heavy metal or other toxicity.”
Ghen suggests pacing IV doses, tailoring treatments and conducting follow-up analysis. “As an educator who has trained over 3,800 physicians in the use of intravenous nutrition, I always emphasize safety. A well-trained intravenous healthcare practitioner adheres to a maximum infusion rate of 4 milliliters per minute,” elaborates
32 Sarasota/Manatee Edition www.nasrq.com
Healing Ways
Ghen. Before initiating IV therapy, he demands a comprehensive blood workup, and before each IV vitamin session, he requires an assessment of vital signs and urinalysis.
Caution should be exercised, especially with conditions like kidney disease, when high-dose vitamin C administration may exacerbate kidney failure. As for individuals with certain needs or that are on certain medications, Ghen clarifies, “Contraindications related to intravenous nutrition are primarily dosage-dependent rather than inherent to the natural components.” Vitamin C, commonly used as a base in intravenous mixtures, can pose challenges due to its high salt content. For patients with salt sensitivity or heart failure, Ghen points out that the typical doses may be contraindicated, but smaller doses remain an option.

Cannabidiol for Dogs Tips for Successful CBD Treatments
by Ruth Roberts, DVM, CVA, CVH, CVFT, NAN
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a standout compound found in cannabis and hemp plants. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it will not get a pet “high”, but it has caught the attention of dog owners worldwide for its health benefits. With more than 100 cannabinoids interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) to regulate everything from mood to inflammation, it is no wonder that CBD supplements for pets are on the rise. But as popularity grows, so do questions and concerns.
CBD SAFETY
Research suggests that CBD is generally safe for dogs when used responsibly. A 2022 study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science determined that a daily dose of 4 milligrams (mg) of CBD per kilogram of body weight was well-tolerated in clinically healthy dogs for six months. Another study published in the same journal two years earlier tested the tolerability of three canna-
bis oil formulations containing CBD, THC or a combination of CBD and THC versus a placebo. The researchers found that dogs tolerated escalating doses of 18.3 to 640.5 mg of CBD oil well, concluding that a CBDpredominant oil formulation was safer for dogs than formulas containing higher concentrations of THC.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT PRODUCT
Angela Ardolino, founder of CBD Dog Health, highlights the benefits of fullspectrum hemp extract, which, unlike CBD isolates, incorporates a broad array of cannabinoids, including CBD and even THC in trace amounts up to the legal threshold of 0.03 percent. She recommends choosing organic, U.S. hemp-derived products to guarantee purity and legal compliance; CO2 extraction for a high-quality, solvent-free extract; and formulations made specifically for dogs rather than humans to prevent overdosing and unnecessary ingredients.
According to Ardolino, products should have enough CBD to treat a condition effectively, from 6 to 12 mg for stress or anxiety to 12 mg for pain and 50 to 100 mg for severe conditions like cancer or seizures. Consider bioavailability, also—sublingual oils are most effective for absorption.
"Only choose products that have a COA [certificate of analysis] by a third-party lab that tests for potency and purity and to ensure it has no contaminants like pesticides, heavy metals, mycotoxins or solvents in the product,” recommends Ardolino. “This is also the only way to prove that you are buying a full-spectrum hemp extract. It should be easily found on the label or on the website. If you can’t easily find one, don’t buy the product.” Customer reviews can also provide insights into a product’s efficacy, safety and quality, as well as a company’s transparency and level of customer support.
GETTING A DOG STARTED ON CBD
While the general guidance is to start with a low dose and adjust based on the dog’s response, Ardolino notes that conditions like seizures, pain or cancer may require a higher dosage from the start. She acknowledges that dogs may initially experience a mild psychoactive effect, but this typically subsides as they become accustomed to CBD. The key is to monitor a pet’s reaction closely and adjust the dosage as needed to find a balance that alleviates symptoms without causing discomfort.
DURATION OF EFFECTS
How long the effects of CBD will last depends on a variety of factors, including a dog’s size, as well as the dosage and administration method. A 2021 study published
36 Sarasota/Manatee Edition www.nasrq.com Natural Pet
in Animals found that an intravenous administration of CBD will generally be eliminated from the body within nine hours. However, an oral dose, which is influenced by food intake and liver processing, has a lower bioavailability (13 to 19 percent), so less CBD enters the bloodstream, and yet its effects may last longer due to a slower absorption rate. The exact duration varies with dosage, metabolism and whether it is taken with food.
POTENTIAL RISKS
While CBD is generally well-received by many dogs, some may experience mild side effects, including dry mouth, a decrease in blood pressure or drowsiness. Selecting the appropriate dosage and a high-quality product is crucial to minimize these risks. Research indicates that CBD can also influence liver enzymes, notably cytochrome P450s and alkaline phosphatase, both essential in metabolizing various medications. Consequently, there is a potential risk of interactions when CBD is used alongside other drugs, possibly altering the effectiveness and required dosages of those medications. Therefore, despite the availability of CBD treats and products, consulting a veterinarian before introducing a CBD regimen is vital to ensure safety and efficacy.

Cosmic Center Presents Ken Lloyd - Transformational Healing Event - 7-8pm. Join Ken as he spends over an hour modifying the energy bands around your body and working directly with your soul consciousness to remove energy interference and energy distortions. These interferences and distortions contribute to dis-ease, reduction of your overall well-being and restrict access to your spiritual bodies. By removing these it allows the body to regain its natural capacity to heal and thrive. We often see the result of this deep intense energy work manifest rapidly in the physical body as a healing or emotional release and we see it in our spiritual bodies as greater access to our guides and higher selves. During this healing event Ken, will access your higher dimensional energy fields and begin removing the energy distortions and root cause (origination) of those energies to give your soul the needed stability it has been seeking lifetime after lifetime. This work will extend to the highest energetic expressions of your soul all the way down to the energy bodies around you and inside the human body down to every atom in the physical body with the intent of your soul and body healing rapidly. Capacity is limited. $75. Sign up here: KenLloydOfficial.as.me/ccosl-june-healing. Cosmic Center of Spiritual Light, 5041 Ring-
