letter from publisher
Helloagain, readers! Here we are, standing at the finish line of 2022, celebrating this holiday season with those we love most, and starting to look ahead to the possibili ties of 2023. I am so thrilled that you continue to turn to Natural Awakenings for wellness and inspiration in the midst of life’s hectic pace. Our theme for the month is “Uplifting Humanity,” so without further ado, let’s peek inside the last issue of this year!
Our feature article this month dives right in with “Together Thinking: Meaningful Conversations that Can Transform Our World.” In these turbulent times, we are learning to release old norms and create a new societal landscape. In this space of growth, there is so much potential for creative transformation if we work together. We must join to reform our methods of innovation, education, connection and unification. But we also must turn back to the healing wisdom of Indigenous cultures to recover the interconnected nature of all life on this earth. By cultivating a relationship between ancient consciousness and 21st-century progress, we can link arms with each other and raise our collective voices to pursue social change.
Next, we’ll discuss creating personal balance with “Good Vibrations: The Healing Power of Sound.” For centuries, sound therapies and vibrational energies have been used to facilitate both physical and mental healing. In recent years, these modalities have experienced a resurgence as more of us rediscover the benefits of sound therapy for stress management, pain relief, emotional regulation, mental clarity and focus, trauma release, healthier sleep, metabolic function and well-being as a whole. Moreover, there are nu merous varieties of sound therapy to choose from such as Singing Bowls, Gongs, Tuning Forks, Vocal Toning, Solfeggio Frequencies and Binaural Beats. This article will explore each of those to help you make an informed decision as to which option feels right to you. With consistent and intentional practice, sound therapy can usher in powerful, cumulative self-healing results.

Achieving balance in the area of physical wellness is just as crucial as it is for mental and emotional health. But this time of year can feel like a minefield for those of who want to adopt nutritious eating habits. Take the holiday brunch table, for instance: It can be full of indulgent, caloric-heavy classics that will throw you off balance for the rest of the day. But there are alternatives, which is exactly what we’ll talk about in this month’s “Conscious Eating” article. With a few simple modifications, it is possible to serve your brunch guests a healthier spin on their favorite seasonal dishes. This article also features some plantbased recipes such as protein pancakes, cranberry mimosas, shakshuka, and homemade cranberry juice. Not only will these crowd pleasers taste delicious—they’re packed with nutrition too!
Let’s not forget the importance of uplifting our next generation. When we teach children the value of kindness, compassion and generosity, it’s not just beneficial for the world—it’s equally vital for their well-being too. As our “Healthy Kids” article points out, charitable actions can increase a child’s self-esteem; alleviate depression, anxiety or stress; encourage the release of mood-lifting hormones such as dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin; and cultivate a sense of connection with others. Patents can nurture this empa thetic, generous spirit in their kids by instilling these values in the home, finding volunteer opportunities in the community, and making sure they experience authentic love and acceptance in their own lives.
Well, that about closes it out for us in 2022. Thank you for the continual support, and we look forward to serving you with more inspirational content in 2023. So from the whole team here at Natural Awakenings, we wish you a festive holiday season, and we’ll be back next month to help you ring in another beautiful New Year!

Dr. Anna Baker, DOM, invites you to join her interactive anti-aging seminars via Zoom on December 7 and 16, both at 1:30 p.m. She will showcase her Faces by Dr. Anna acupuncture facelift and her muscle retightening Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna, both of which can make you look like your Snapchat filter pictures. Please contact the Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna store to access the Zoom meeting ID number.
Dr. Anna performs a unique type of acupuncture facelift that she invented. The muscles of the face and neck are progressively retightened to retrace the steps that aging took. An initial package of 10 treatments is required, and the results last for 18 months before a one-treatment touchup is required to maintain the lift. COVID-19 safety protocols include treatment rooms with special air filtration systems that pull patients’ breath droplets out the window.
In these seminars, Dr. Anna will show photographed results on people of all ages. In addition, she will discuss her proprietary Pearl Cream by Dr Anna that offers the same muscle retightening as her acupuncture facelift in a slower, more gradual process. Her Pearl Cream is an anti-aging serum made from real pearls and Chinese herbs without any preservatives. Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna is also available as a muscle tightening body lotion, a men’s anti-aging line and a sports performance line.

The Importance of Omega-3s for Mental and Physical Wellness
Everyone needs the omega-3s, EPA and DHA. These powerhouse nutrients provide life-sustaining benefits for human health from conception all the way into old age. Since we cannot make these essential fats in our bodies, we must consume them. When looking for an EPA/DHA supplement, Professional Supplement Center has you covered. We offer a variety of top-rated profession al brands including Wiley’s Finest Fish Oil. Why is EPA/DHA Fish oil important? Let’s discuss some key benefits below:
Feeling moody? Mental health requires optimal nutrition, but quite often, people with mood issues tend to have a diet low in omega-3. The American Psychiatric Association recommends that anyone challenged with mood or anxiety issues take at least 1,000 mg EPA/DHA per day. Just be aware, it can take up to eight weeks for dietary changes and supplements to make a noticeable difference. Got a heart? Your heart needs omega-3s for healthy circulation, heart rate and blood pressure levels. Omega-3s are also beneficial to optimize triglyceride and cholesterol levels. Consuming at least 500-1,000 mg per day is the global recommendation, but more is better for most of us—especially if fish isn’t on the regular menu. Want to give your immune system a boost? The way our bodies responds to immune challenges is directly influenced by our nutrition al status. EPA/DHA omega-3s help to coordinate processes involved in healthy immune function. As building blocks for immune system cells, they also support healthy inflammation. Salmon, sardines and purified fish oil are excellent sources of EPA and DHA. There are also vegan alternatives available if you do not consume animal protein.
Regular consumption of adequate EPA/DHA Omega-3s is essential for health, so make this a priority and visit Professional Supplement Center today. Mention the code, “Omega.” for an exclusive 20% off coupon, excluding sale items.
Location: 5525 Palmer Crossing Cir., Sarasota. For more information, call 941-487-5990 or visit ProfessionalSupplementCenter.com.

by Dr. Fred HarveyMood
states are affected by nutrition, sleep quality, exercise, relationships and connection to nature. Eight percent of adults and 16 to 20 percent of teens will suffer from mood disorders at some point in their lives. Many of us have experienced increasing levels of stress in numerous areas of our lives these past several years, so it’s no wonder that we’ve been susceptible to mood swings or fluctua tions—serious ones, at that.
Depressive or anxious moods are often interconnected. Feeling sad or anxious about an event—such as losing a loved one or an ticipating a job interview—is normal. Stress from anxiety or depression might disturb sleep, interrupt exercise routines, create nutritional deficiencies or excesses, and upset relationships.
The upcoming holiday season can create even more stress, and the decrease in daylight hours this time of year can cause a seasonal affective disorder. When these circumstances occur, we can experience metabolic imbal ances that change our emotions or darken our thoughts. Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness or hopelessness can result from a mood disorder. Trouble focusing, irritability, weight and appetite loss, and lack of pleasure in favorite activities can also be subtle signs of a mood disorder.
Medical causes of mood changes can include Lyme disease, mold exposure and vi tamin deficiencies. It’s important to diagnosis
the root cause to determine the right course of treatment, but in the meantime, here are some of my professional strategies for a mood lift.
Omega-3: Omega-3 deficiencies can cause a depressive mood or poor concentration. I have seen many patients resolve these issues by taking fish oil supplements daily. Choose a high-quality omega-3 oil like OmegAvail Hi-Po by Designs for Health.
Vitamin B: Deficiencies in Vitamin B, especially folate B9 and cobalamin B12, are associated with feelings of persistent sadness. Therefore, I advise taking B Activ by Xymo gen, which many find effective in lifting their moods.
Walking: Studies have shown that walking for 30 minutes a day can reverse a depres sive mood state. I enjoy walking around my neighborhood, and I will often use that time to meditate, which brings me to my next recommendation.
Meditation: A daily meditation practice can help to change your mood from negative to positive by teaching you how to mindfully tune into the present moment.
Disconnect: The news is one of the signifi cant stressors to promote anxious or negative thoughts. One of the first pieces of advice I share with patients to detoxify their minds or alleviate depression is to turn off the news. You’ll have more fun and experience more
peace when you limit screen time and inten tionally find other pursuits.
If you suffer from persistent mood issues de spite using pharmaceuticals to treat the overt symptoms, there could be a metabolic cause at the root. Your functional medicine doctor can use advanced lab tests to assess nutrition, toxins, infections and autoimmune causes of mood disorders. We perform those tests at Functional Medicine Florida, and have helped thousands of Floridians find the root cause of their health concerns.
Experience the life-altering difference of func tional medicine by calling Dr. Harvey’s office, Functional Medicine Florida (formerly known as The Harvey Center), at 941-929-9355. To purchase the supplements mentioned in this article, visit www.healthystepsstore.com. Dr. Fred Harvey is the Medical Director of Functional Medicine Florida. He is quadruple board-cer tified in Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Functional Medicine and Holistic-Integrative Medicine, specializing in chronic illness recovery, prevention and defiant aging. FINDING RELIEF FROM FOOT PAIN
by Eric Winder, DCFeet are the body’s foundation, but they are often taken for granted—until they hurt. When feet are painful, it’s hard to give them a break. After all, we need them to move. Let’s examine some of the main causes of foot pain, as well as the solutions that can provide relief.
Types of foot pain range from plantar fasciitis or metatarsal gia to Achilles tendonitis or Morton’s neuroma. Some painful feet are arthritic, while others might be painful due to a chronic ankle sprain. These are all different problems, but they share one com mon thread—the inability to handle the normal forces we subject our feet to on a daily basis. Causes of this failure include wearing shoes, prior injuries, and hereditary problems such as flat feet or high arches.
Many of us are aware the wrong type of shoe can cause foot problems. Long-term wear of high heels often leads to bunions, hammer toes and fallen arches. On the other hand, slip-on shoes
or flip flops frequently cause toe clenching to keep them from slip ping off, which can lead to plantar fasciitis. However, what many don’t know is that just wearing shoes of any kind for an entire lifetime can lead to foot problems.
Three Causes of Foot Pain
Three research studies in various parts of the world com pared barefoot-living villagers with shoe-wearing relatives in cities. The research showed that those who live barefoot have almost no structural foot problems such as those listed above. As it turns out, walking barefoot uses a lot more muscular strength in the lower leg. This helps to maintain more structural support from tendons that attach from those muscles to the foot.
It also follows that people who are inactive or sedentary can be more prone to foot problems due to not maintaining sufficient strength in their lower leg muscles. Another significant problem for many is past trauma to either the leg or foot. Physical injuries can leave residual stiffening or distortion in the connective tissue called fascia.
This, in turn, can cause muscular imbalance and weakness that leads to pain—whether it is located the plantar fascia on the bottom of the foot, the pad at the ball of the foot, or the tendon attachment at the back of the heel. In the specific case of chronic ankle sprain, the original injury can cause the ankle to remain weak, so that a person might repeatedly “turn” their ankle and reinjure it. Of course, for some, the only cause of their foot pain is their inherited flat feet or abnormally high arches, both of which can lead to extra stress on the foot.
With hereditary flat feet, the foot never develops a full arch, which deminishes the spring action that the arch would normally provide. Less spring means less foot protection from the stress of walking, running, jumping or standing. You might think that someone with high arches would have opposite issues of flat feet, but actually, a high arch tends to be more rigid (and less springy) than a normally shaped arch. This puts more stress on the feet when they bear weight. In the end, both problems tend to create arch pain.
Answers to Foot Pain
When we look at solutions to foot pain, we should start once again with shoes (or the alternative of not wearing shoes at all). While a lifetime of walking around barefoot is ideal for foot health, switching over to barefoot will not necessarily help someone who has worn shoes all their life. First, it takes time to build the leg muscles to tolerate a lot of barefoot walking. A second issue is the hard surfaces that most people tend to live on today. Wood or tile floors, cement sidewalks and asphalt roads are not what feet are built for.
For someone with foot pain, walking on hard surfaces will likely worsen the discomfort. While there are some instances where barefoot walking is helpful—such as on sand or soft earth— most of us need shoes for support and protection. The key is to
While choosing the correct shoe can involve many considerations, certain basic features are important. The arch should roughly match the shape of your foot. Most of us should have at least moderate arch sup port. However, those with flat feet should not try to use too much arch support, although a minimal amount is still important.
On the other hand, those with high arches usually benefit from a fuller arch sup port. In many high arch cases, a shoe that is otherwise well built might need either supple mental support or replacement of the built-in support with a more robust arch insert.
Shoes with a sole that is too rigid do not encourage as much leg muscle activity. An optimal shoe should allow flexibility where the toes bend with some back-and-forth twist at the arch. Also, the heel cup should align vertically and not tilt inward—otherwise the shoe will encourage pronation of the foot, thus exacerbating foot pain in the long-term.
Fascia and Feet
Past physical trauma can leave restric tions in the fascia (connective tissue) of the leg and foot, leading to pain. Manual therapy treatments that release fascia restrictions can help to restore muscular balance and joint stability, relieving foot pain. Fascia release is a focus of my practice, and I have helped many people experience relief from foot pain with this type of treatment. In addition to releasing restrictions of the foot tissues, it is also im portant to release restrictions in the lower legs, thighs and even hips to restore foot function.
It is worth emphasizing how much fascia can be involved in foot pain. Even when there are physical changes to the foot, such as bunions or arthritis, much of the pain is often caused by fascia distortion. Stiffening of this connective tissue can alter muscle tension and joint stability, which could contribute to structural changes in the first place. Treat ing these restrictions can relieve pain, even though it usually cannot reverse the structural distortion.
Those with naturally high or low arches can develop restrictions in fascia more easily, due to greater stress on their feet. Therefore, wearing optimal shoes with the right arch supports is critical. When necessary, custom orthotic inserts can also be relieving, and fascia release therapy is almost always helpful.
Each case of foot pain is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Understanding both shoe type and arch support is important. In many cases, expert help with fascia release therapy and specific exercise programs can also make a signif icant difference in pain relief. For those afflicted with pain in their feet, I recom mend seeking out a healthcare practitioner experienced in all of the above issues.
Dr. Eric Winder has been practicing chiro practic for 25 years. His practice emphasizes relieving pain and restoring alignment and motion with gentle fascia release ther apies. For more information, call 941-9578390 or visit Gentlebay.com.
BACK PAIN THE STEM CELL SOLUTION
by Mark Walter M.D.“Stem cell injections represent the most powerful non-surgical tool we have to heal back pain.”
– Mark Walter M.D., RegenOrtho.com
According to a 2016 review in the Journal of Pain Management, 75 percent of back surgeries fail to relieve the pain. This is known as failed back surgery syndrome. As an M.D., who has specialized in Non-Surgical Regenerative Orthopedics for over a dozen years, one of the most common presenting complaints I encoun ter is back pain.
In my experience, the true underlying cause of back pain is often misunderstood and misdiagnosed by the medical profes sion. As a result, the treatments, which are often invasive, commonly fail to relieve a patient’s pain.
Unfortunately, MRI’s are often mis leading. There are two reasons for this. They fail to identify the subtle micro-tears in tendons and ligaments, which are often the root cause of back pain. They also can detect abnormalities, which are incorrectly assumed to be the cause of the pain, result
ing in inappropriate and invasive treat mentss that could, in fact, cause their own complications. This will often compound the problem instead of resolving it. Conversely, the non-surgical Regen erative Orthopedic approach can be highly effective. In my experience, it’s the treat ment of choice for many types of back pain. The approach of using injections to treat back pain and rebuild commonly damaged structures has been used for many years, and is known as Prolotherapy (“prolo” stands for proliferation of joint tissue, as well as supportive ligaments and tendons). However, the capacity to “harvest” and inject a person’s own stem cells in the office setting is a new and exciting development in this treatment protocol, which enhances the stimulus to healing.
The most common cause of low back pain is a sprain or strain of the pelvic ten dons. This commonly gives a “sciatica-like” presentation and mimics nerve pain quite closely. Since this problem will not be vis ible on an MRI or x-ray, the most effective (and perhaps the only) method to correctly diagnose it is with a detailed physical exam
by an experienced Regenerative specialist. This is a “hands-on” specialty.
The doctor needs to palpate specific structures to elicit the so-called “jump sign.” If the doctor can, in fact, repro duce the symptoms by palpating certain structures with the thumb, this is virtually diagnostic of the problem’s root cause. Once a diagnosis is made, the next course of action is to determine which strength of solution should be injected to stimulate the body to heal the damaged structures. This will depend on the complexity and severity of the case, as well as the healing capacity and desires of the patient.
Level one is the tried-and-true dextrose Prolotherapy (which has been used successfully for several years), where a concentrated sugar solution stimulates new blood flow to a region. Level two is high-density PRP (platelet rich plasma) prepared from a simple blood draw from the patient. This will bring a few stem cells and multiple growth factors to bear on the damaged region. Level three uses stem cells, known as adult mesenchymal stem cells, which are harvested from a person’s own body fat (usually around the abdo men) in a simple office procedure. The stem cells are then joined with PRP and injected in and around the damaged joint or region, often with the help of ultrasound guidance.
For most cases, depending on the strength of solution, it takes three to eight sessions of regenerative injections to heal the damaged structures (usually spaced from two to eight weeks apart) and achieve the desired results. For patients, who have back pain and are candidates for Regener ative Orthopedics, we have more than an 85 percent success rate. The advantages of this approach include minimal risk and little down time. There will often be some soreness with the injections, but the vast majority of patients tolerate the injections once they understand that this treatment will likely be the most effective solution to fix their problem.
Regenerative Orthopedics with stem cells represents an elegant and powerful non-surgical approach to heal back pain. Due to the minimal risk and downtime, I believe this approach could eventually become the treatment of choice for many
orthopedic problems. This truly is the med icine of the future.
Mark Walter, MD, CM, CCFP, has pio neered the field of Regenerative Orthopedics for the last 20 years, and is considered one of the top Stem Cell Orthopedic specialists in Florida. Dr. Walter received his M.D. degree from McGill, then completed his residency in Family Practice and Sports Medicine in 1982. He went on to do five years of post-doc fellowship work in Regenerative Orthopedics with the world-renowned Hackett-Hemwall foundation, in association with the Univer sity of Wisconsin. During that period, Dr. Walter was mentored by and worked with some of the top regenerative orthopedic teachers in the world. Dr. Walter is a leading expert in myofascial pain generators and ligament and tendon regeneration.

Sound Healing for Balance in All of Life’s Season:
Q&A WITH THE OM SHOPPE
by Mary-Elizabeth SchurrerThis time of year can often feel like the last mile of an exhausting marathon. You are running out of stamina, but there’s still so much on the line to accomplish as you look ahead to a bustling holi day season and a fast-approaching New Year just around the corner.
If you could use a tune-up of energetic balance, harmony and restoration in your life right now, welcome to the club. After a stressful, tumultuous couple of years, couldn’t we all benefit from this? Fortunately, The OM Shoppe in Sarasota has just the modality to help us access a state of physical, mental and emotional health. Enter: sound healing.
In the final Community Spotlight of 2022, Beth Snyder, CEO of The OM Shoppe and Certified Therapeutic Sound Practitioner, will introduce us to the power of sound healing, what to look for when choosing a therapist, and why this treatment is so incredible for maintaining balance and wellness—no matter how hectic the pace of life might feel.
National Awakenings: Could you summarize what sound healing entails for those who are unfamiliar, as well as your own credentials and experience with this modality?
Beth Snyder: Sound healing has experienced a recent surge in mainstream visibility. As a result, there are many new, diverse offer ings of this modality available. However, at its core, sound therapy, sonic therapy, sound healing or therapeutic sound application are all forms of vibrational medicine. What exactly is vibrational medicine?
This is a holistic approach to health and wellness, which takes into account the energetic nature of all life. Our atoms are vibrating energy, and the energetic vibrations of many forms and frequencies (colors, lights, sounds, touch, aromas) constantly affect us. There fore, vibrational medicine encompasses all forms of energy thera pies that can tune us—and our environments— back into a state of harmonic resonance.
One of this modality’s most powerful benefits is the applica tion of therapeutic sound. This can take many forms, such as sound
baths, one-on-one integral sound therapy, tuning fork therapy, vocal toning or drumming. This also includes elaborate musical medicine concerts, like those performed at The OM Shoppe by musical medi cine group Resonance.
At the OM Shoppe in Sarasota, we have been specializing in vibrational medicine and sound therapy products since 2010. We distribute Crystal Singing Bowls and Tibetan Singing Bowls, as well as a vast array of therapeutic sound or vibrational medicine products and educational resources. You can find these through our online store and in our 3200-square-foot showroom and energy spa.
An addition to being the CEO of the OM Shoppe, I also am a Clinical Hypnotherapist, ISTA Certified Therapeutic Sound Practi tioner and a teacher for the Sound Healing Academy. I oversee the in-person certification and diploma classes in Sound Therapy held at The OM Shoppe. We have successfully graduated over 500 Therapeu tic Sound Practitioners, to date. I also recently joined the board of directors for the International Sound Therapy Association, a 501(c)3 that collectively works to raise the standards of sound healing educa tion, certification, research and community ethics.
NA: What are some of the health benefits sound healing has to offer, and are there any specific ailments or blockages it’s been known to help resolve?
Snyder: If you have ever listened to a piece of music and took notice of how it changed your mood, then you understand how quickly sound can impact mental and emotional states. Beyond jamming out to your favorite tunes, however, professional sound therapy takes this deeper through the Science of Sound—and how it impacts not only mood states, but also bodily tissues, muscles and subcon scious belief systems.
Frequencies that range from 500 to 400 hertz (a hertz is one cycle per second) are, in essence, a massage for your cells within the muscles, joints and bones. This vibrational massage filters through the entire physical and energetic body-mind. The principle of harmonic resonance elevates the body’s cells to a super healing state to rebuild more tissue and activate the body’s natural abilities to heal itself. In these deeply relaxing states, you can also shift limiting beliefs and recreate patterns to improve your mood, behavior and personal choices.
Studies have shown that, by using sound tools (such as a Crystal Singing Bowl), a person can more easily enter a meditative state, im prove their sleep, manage PTSD and activate the relaxation response. According to ISTASounds.org, below are just a few health benefits of using sound therapy on your own, with a therapist or as a group:
Studies confirm that sound therapy and music can manage the symptoms of conditions such as arthritis, cancer, tinnitus, autoim mune disease. That’s because using vibrational frequencies and deep relaxation sound therapy is known to “aid the body in its natural process of self-healing,” those studies point out. Sound therapy can also help lower blood pressure, enhance sleep, regulate emotions, improve mental clarity and alleviate anxious feelings.
One of my greatest joys is to help entire families discover how easy it is to build soothing sounds into their daily routines. I love to educate others on how to do a sound bath at home for their children or loved ones—and even their pets. It’s an incredible way to bond, relax and heal right in the comfort of their own homes. Recently, The OM Shoppe, created an at-home sound bath bundle with step-bystep instructions that anyone can implement.
NA: As a professional in the alternative wellness space, what are your thoughts on the increase in sound healing’s mainstream visibility within recent years?
Snyder: The OM Shoppe has been a leader in the field of sound healing since 2010. In recent years, there has been an explosion of new online stores, educational programs and public offerings that also focus on sound therapy. But unfortunately, several of these are of poor quality, which can lay the groundwork for potential trouble.
Before you refer to yourself as a professional in this modality, or attempt to offer any kind of sound therapy, seek out at least 200 hours of core quality education. The Sound Healing Academy is an excellent resource to obtain those credentials. It is not enough to purchase some instruments and start offering services. In fact, this can be quite dangerous if you do not have the right education and understanding of how power ful this modality can be. It’s crucial that you know how to correctly work with sound in relation to the human body and mind. For a list of quality education institutions and certified therapists, visit ISTASounds.org.
If you are considering a sound bath or a one-on-one treatment using sound therapy, first ask the therapist where they trained and how many hours of training they have completed. If you have ever experienced a sound bath from a practitioner who is not trained, it can be disturbing and upsetting. Therefore, it’s vital to seeking out qualified, trained therapists.
Much like Hypnotherapy, sound healing is a non-licensed profession. However, it is not protected as a profession because it is not listed in the Department of Labor’s Occupa tional Handbook. The International Sound Therapy Association is working to protect our field and sacred profession from those who are looking just to earn a quick dollar with no regard for the future and integrity of this powerful healing modality.
NA: What sound healing treatments do you offer at the OM Shoppe & Spa, and do you have any upcoming events that focus on this particular modality?
Snyder: Sound therapy is at the heart of The OM Shoppe. In fact, we are the premier energy spa here on the East Coast. People come from all over the world to learn about this modality and receive treatments. We offer massage, energy therapy, hypnotherapy and, of course, therapeutic sound sessions in various forms.
We also offer group activities such as an acoustic and meditative OM Sound Bath
on the second Wednesday of each month. Two unique factors make these sound baths so spectacular—the skill of our Musical Di rector, Zen Seraphine, as well as our use of several hundred resonating crystal instru ments in the space.
The Sound Journey, held on the fourth Sunday of each month, is another group event we offer. Comprised of a four-mu sician ensemble called Resonance, these shows have been sold out for over four years. This distinctive experience is electri fied with violin, guitar, professional hypno sis and over 100 different instruments. In both of these group events, participants will relax in an anti-gravity lounge chair with hypnotic lights in an ambiance like no other. Sound therapy is present in almost all one-on-one treatments. Even our massages start with a seven-chakra practitioner sing ing bowl clearing. The OM Shoppe’s most sought after one-on-one sound sessions include the Integral Sound Healing, Sha manic Clearing with Sound™, Sound Wave Attunement™ and Sonic Meridian Clearing with Tuning Forks™. All treatments are trademarks of The OM Shoppe, and have been carefully created with the deep knowl edge of how therapeutic sound impacts all levels of the human consciousness.
You can also experience our pro fessionally trademarked Hypnosound™ recordings. These are combinations of hyp nosis and sound healing in a digital .mp3 format. We offer many recordings to help in numerous areas, from releasing anxiety to improving motivation. In the spa, Hypno sound™ is combined with our vibroacoustic chair, light therapy and headphones for an amazing treatment that anyone can walk in and enjoy. Hypnosound™ recordings and Sound Journeys are also available online for purchase to download.
NA: If someone is interested in sound healing, what qualities should they look for in a practitioner to ensure safe results and optimal wellness benefits?
Snyder: To ensure that you have the best possible experience, it is vital to seek out a highly trained professional. I recommend that you look for someone who has grad uated with at least a diploma, and has over 200 hours of training—even better if they have a certification from a body such as the International Sound Therapy Association. This indicates they are holding themselves to a high ethical standard, as well as partici pating in continuous education.
A quality sound therapist will have a breadth of knowledge across the field.
They also should have the training to ensure you’re able facilitate your own healing as they hold space for you. It’s important to remember: while you might see the title, “Sound Healer,” no one ever heals another. All improvement—physical, emotional or psychological—is self-healing.
We invite you to learn more in the free learning center on our website. We have compiled hundreds of articles on the subject of sound therapy and all the wonderful treat ment modalities that fall under this umbrella of vibrational medicine.

Transforming Our World
WORKING TOGETHER FOR MEANINGFUL CHANGE
by Linda SechristA Beloved Community Co-Creating an Island of Sanity Through Collaboration
Instead of shouting, “The sky is falling, and the seas are rising,” in response to a world that is unraveling and experiencing the growing realities of global warming, residents of St. Petersburg, Florida, are embracing resil ience. To prove that the future is born in webs of human conversation, the city is counting on collective intelligence to emerge.
With all the chaos occurring in the world today, it is challeng ing to remain centered and not feel overwhelmed. Every shocking headline seems to pull the proverbial rug out from under us. Thought leader Laureen Golden explains the dilemma this way: “Psychologi cally, we were raised, educated and social ized in a world that no longer really exists. We have a new world that we must navigate, and we need a new psychology, a whole new way of being for that world. Reducing, compartmentalizing, separating things in order to understand them no longer works for us. It’s going to take work to get out of this paradigm.”
Drawing from her background in edu cation and social work, Golden ponders, “How does that new psychology develop when all our institutions charged with cul tivating consciousness—schools, families, religious institutions and organizations—are set in the 19th and 20th centuries? Since learning is how we go from one paradigm to
another, where do we go to learn the skills and the structures we need to be successful in such a complex world? We can’t do it individually. We must learn in collectives.”
The paradigm shift envisioned by Golden offers an opportunity for us to access inno vative methods of learning, discovery and connection, such as sociocracy (a self-gov ernance system based on the equality of its members); systems thinking (an approach to complexity that looks at the whole and analyzes relationships, rather than split ting it into smaller pieces); permaculture (exploring natural ecosystems as a whole); circle methods (thinking things through as a group); and Indigenous wisdom (focusing on the interconnectedness of all things).
All of these methods focus on an ethos of collaboration and teach us how to discern wisdom, which is different than knowledge. By engaging in these conversations and explorations, we learn that if we tug on any one part of the web of life, we tug the whole web—an important analogy for our times.
Among the tools city participants are employing is The World Café, developed by Juanita Brown and David Isaac, which allows people to host group conversations around thoughtful questions. The concept is designed to evoke deeper listening and give rise to solutions for today’s challenges in a more conscious, intentional and stra tegic way. Forty citizens have taken The World Café facilitation course. Employing a simple and flexible format for hosting large group dialogue, this methodology enables participants to clarify the context, create hospitable space, explore questions that matter, encourage everyone’s con tribution, connect diverse perspectives, listen together for patterns and insights, and share collective discoveries.
Other important work being applied is that of bestselling author and longtime com munity organizer Margaret Wheatley. Her training, which is designed to cultivate what she calls “Warriors of the Human Spirit,” arouses people’s inherent generosity, creativ ity, compassion and need for community. Known as a big-systems thinker throughout her 45-year career, Wheatley has concluded that the only opportunity for change is at the local level. Questions that encourage col lective learning became integral to creating cohesiveness in St. Petersburg this year.
Dr. Donella Meadows’ “systems thinking” has helped St. Petersburg participants understand that living systems begin as networks, shift to intentional communities of practice and evolve into powerful systems capable of influence. Also instructive has been “complexity theory”, which helped participants recognize human systems as organizations, families and communities.
“The city leaders felt conversations were important enough to invest $20,000 to cultivate a culture of conversational leadership in the neigh borhoods. Another $25,000 was granted by the Community Founda tion of Tampa Bay to research the outcomes. Now, the Florida Council of Churches, University of South Florida, Community Foundation of Tampa Bay and The Connection Partners have received a Commu nity Vibrancy grant of $14,500 to pilot conversations in three neigh borhoods, spreading the skills in creating participatory democracy. Participants will host conversations in their own neighborhoods,” says St. Petersburg resident Sharon Joy Kleitsch, founder of The Connection Partners and a longtime catalyst for applying strategic actions based on the new sciences of complexity theory, strategic thinking and quantum science.
“Those who have used World Café as a tool know that a culture of conversational leadership offers citizens the opportunity to experience a sense of oneness and connectedness. We’ve explored what happens when we share feelings of care, compassion and appreciation toward a beloved community,” says Kleitsch. “We found that group resonance, profound personal involvement and deeply engrossing, interactive conversation supports a City of Compassion and an International City of Peace, which St. Petersburg was chosen to be. I want to be sure that people understand that we do not have answers. Together, we are exploring pathways and listening for the answers to emerge.”
Since 2020, a thoughtfully selected group of Florida activists—in cluding participants from St. Petersburg—have been holding weekly online Zoom conversations that matter. In 2021, they were joined by participants from Ohio to study the Capra Course, which is based on The Systems View of Life: A Unifying Vision by bestselling author Fritjof Capra.
“What we discovered after only two weeks was that we were our selves a living system connecting to itself and becoming self-organized,” says Kleitsch. “We became aware that we were learning together. We were sharing what we were learning around subjects such as honoring Indigenous peoples, local food systems, the human right to clean water, reimaging capitalism and many more subjects. We’ve also bifurcated into a Sarasota [Florida] cohort. The key is, we were not random. We were a self-selected study group learning collaboratively, which is the best way I recommend activists study the Capra Course.”
Argerie Vasilakes, who is researching outcomes, explains that her work is dedicated to helping teams, communities and organizations become more coherent. “I start with traditional ways of thinking about our relationships with nature that native peoples have never forgot ten—humans are part of nature, not apart from nature,” she explains. “To me, human organizations, communities, families and governments are also part of nature and examples of natural ecosystems. So, I natu rally look at things from a living systems perspective.”

Vasilakes advises, “In a group that is learning together, such as those in the St. Petersburg neighborhoods, group conversa tions organized around questions specif ically crafted for the context and desired purpose of the World Café evoke a deeper kind of listening, the most important factor determining the success of a Café. They spark learning conversations that can pro duce insights and innovation for meeting the challenges they face. Through practicing shared listening and paying attention to themes, patterns and insights, participants begin to sense a connection to the larger whole.”
According to Wheatley, the important work is to foster critical connections. She believes it is not necessary to convince large numbers of people to change; instead, she suggests we connect with kindred spirits. Through these relationships and tools like The World Café, we can develop the new knowledge, practices and commitment that lead to broad-based change.
Wheatley sometimes opens her interviews with an ancient Hopi prophecy that reads as if it were applicable to our current times: “Here now is a river flowing very fast. It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid, who will try to hold on to the shore. They are being torn apart and will suffer greatly. The elders say, ‘Let go of the shore, push off and go into the middle of the river. Keep your heads above the water. Know the river has its destination.’ The elders say, ‘See who is in there with you and celebrate.’ At this time in history, we are to take nothing seriously; least of all, ourselves. Gather yourselves. Everything we do now must be done in a spirit of celebration, for we are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”

Seeing who is in the river of chaos with us, we can choose to respond with, “How can I serve with what I have, where I am?” This is what any Warrior of the Human Spirit would say because in the same river of chaos, there are also the seeds of transformation. In these turbulent times when all the old boundaries are unravelling and all the old certainties are dissolving, there is a possibility for creative transformation if we work together.

Enjoying the Holidays without the Weight Gain
by Dr. Laura Korman, DCThe holidays are upon us, but with all the hustle and bustle of eating out, baking seasonal treats, attending festive parties, and feasting with our loved ones, it will come as no surprise that the average American antic ipates packing on an extra five to 10 pounds in the five weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.
The truth is, healthy individuals will only gain about one or two pounds, and those who are overweight will gain about five pounds over the holidays. The problem lies in the fact that any weight put on this season is rarely lost—despite all those New Year’s resolutions. Rather, it accumulates over time in the form of fatty tissue, usually around the waistline. I want to offer you four simple strategies to help you avoid those “holiday pounds” without eliminating your favorite seasonal foods or beverages.
Social events are an important part of celebrating with each other over the holiday season, but the continuous overindulgence of heavy foods can cause us to feel sluggish and uncomfortable Not to mention, it’s not ideal for our health. Being more intentional about how and when we indulge will ensure that we can still enjoy those festive treats in modera
tion, without extra bulge around the middle.
My first tip is not to walk into a holiday event with a ravenous appetite. Most parties feature an array of sweet and salty carbohy drate-rich foods, but might not have as many protein or vegetable options. Before you ar rive, eat a handful of nuts, a hard-boiled egg, or a couple ounces of lean chicken or turkey. This will partially satiate your brain and give you more will-power to avoid overeating too many treats.
Also, make sure to hydrate with water before and during the event as well. This helps to decrease the likelihood of overcon suming alcohol or other sugary drinks. When it comes to the carbs, be intentional about picking your favorites.
From sweet breads, cookies or candies, to hot chocolate or sweet cocktails, to salty chips or trail mixes, most of the festive foods we love are high in carbohydrates. These foods quickly raise blood sugar, which often results in excess fat stored right around the torso. If we are mindful about selecting only our favorite carbs to enjoy them in mod eration, we can still feel satisfied without becoming overstuffed or lethargic.
Another strategy to avoid overconsum ing unhealthy carbohydrates is to bring a protein dish to share, like Publix Greenwise
organic chicken wings or a mixed veggie platter with guacamole and hummus. If you’re a baker and want to bring a treat to share, bake with a natural, low-glycemic sweetener, such as Swerve (erythritol) or Lakanto (monk fruit), rather than sugar, to lower the overall carbohydrate content.
Keep in mind, these sweeteners are often sweeter than sugar, which means that less will be necessary when substituting in reci pes. These sweeteners, as well as allulose, can also be used when making low-carbohydrate drink mixers.
The most powerful strategy I recom mend—not just during the holiday season, but all year long—is to implement time-re stricted feeding or intermittent fasting. This is when you restrict or eliminate caloric intake over a period of time.
The benefits of fasting have been well studied. In addition to promoting healthy weight loss and less abdominal fat, this prac tice can also improve brain health, reduce inflammation, lower the risk of diabetes and enhance longevity.
The two most common types of fasting include daily time-restricted feeding, in which you consume calories in an eight- to 10-hour window (i.e. 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., or 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.); or alternate day, partial fasting, in which you consume 500–600 calories of a specific type of food (i.e. organic chicken bone broth) two days per week, followed by a normal intake of food the other five days. This method of eating mimics our ancestors’ feast and famine lifestyle. It can be highly effective to lose body fat and maintain a healthy weight—even with the occasional overindulgence around this time of year.
So there’s your action plan for resisting the “belly bulge” this holiday season without feeling deprived or unsatisfied. Hopefully, this empowers you to enter the New Year with some tools to make 2023 a happier and healthier one.

Good Vibrations
THE HEALING POWER OF SOUND
by Gayatri BhaumikFor centuries, humans have employed sound in an attempt to heal and cure. The ancient Greeks believed in the power of music, using flutes, lyres and zithers to treat illness and vibrations to alleviate mental disorders. Even today, military battal ions play music to boost morale.
“Research shows that vibrations are the language of the body,” says Kyle Godfrey-Ryan, the founder of TUNE, a New York-based tech system designed to recalibrate the nervous system with sounds. “When we work with sound, we’re working with vibrations that can rebalance the nervous system and flood the body with endorphins.”
According to Susy Markoe Schieffelin, a healing practitioner at The Copper Vessel, in Los Angeles, “Sound vibrations work on a cellular level to recalibrate the body. Sound shifts vibrations in the body, both through entrainment—a process by which the vibrations of one object transform to match the higher vibration of another object—and by stimulating electric signals in the brain that support healing frequencies.”
Studies suggest that sound vibrations can unlock energy blockag es, release tension and create calm and focus. For this reason, sound healing is frequently prescribed to manage conditions like anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Some practitioners also report anecdotal metabolic improvements, from lower blood pressure and decreased cholesterol levels to improved sleep.
TUNE has worked with the National Institutes of Health and the Mayo Clinic to gain scientific backing for the brand’s devic es. “Our technology reduces stress by 54 percent in 15 minutes,” Godfrey-Ryan claims. “It also has a massive impact on the circa dian rhythm, so we’re able to prove better sleep quality, improved metabolism and reduced stress and anxiety.”
Sound healing can take many forms, and each type has specific applications. For example, Schieffelin explains, “Gongs and Tibet an bowls are very clearing and grounding, while crystal singing bowls feel more uplifting and elevating.” It is up to the individual to find a style that works for them and their intended results.
Singing Bowls
Originating in 12th-century Tibet, these metal bowls come in different sizes, each producing a specific sound vibration that is said to work on a particular part of the brain or body. Several-sized bowls often are used together to create a holistic healing approach. They can be placed directly on parts of the body to stimulate circulation and relax muscles. Singing bowls made of pure crystal quartz are popular for their pure sounds, and are believed to offer stress reduction, chakra balancing and mental clarity.
Gongs
Used in healing since about 4,000 B.C., gong baths, which combine different tones and melodies to fashion multifaceted vibrations, may positively influence the mind and body by stimulating the va gus nerve. Godfrey-Ryan advises, “Gongs are amazing for trauma release, but gong work is very heavy, so if you’ve never played with sound before, this will be really intense.”
Vocal Toning
Numerous cultures—from ancient Egyptians to Tibetan throat singers—have their distinct forms of vocal toning. Hindu mantras can be especially powerful for some people because they harness the energy of specific words and intonations. Among practi tioners, seven distinct tones have been linked to specific parts of the body. It is believed that these vibrations can balance the body’s cells and open energetic healing, leading to targeted benefits.
Tuning Forks
While musicians use these devices to ensure that their instruments are set to the correct pitch, they also can be held next to specif ic parts of the body by individuals seeking healing vibrations, emotional balance and pain relief.
“Tuning forks are fun because you can have a very strong somat ic reaction within a few seconds—they’re very powerful,” notes Godfrey-Ryan.
Solfeggio Frequencies
Solfeggio frequencies are musical tunes or sound patterns de signed to stimulate the brain by syncing brain waves to specific healing frequencies. Each of the seven most popular solfeggio frequencies sets out to target a certain purpose, from improving relationships and awakening intuition to navigating change and letting go of fear.
Binaural Beats
Binaural beats are soundscapes that create a gap between different frequencies. For example, the tune might have a tone of 210 Hertz (Hz) in the left ear and 200 Hz in the right ear, producing an illusory tone of 10 Hz, also known as a binaural beat. Brainwaves are thought to auto matically align themselves with this auditory tone, which may be useful for improving focus and reducing stress.
Sound healing is finding a permanent place in modern wellness culture as more people experience its rewards. While there are myriad ways to use sound vibrations for healing purposes, it is up to each individual to find the style that resonates with them and achieves the improvements they seek. With regular practice, they may even find relief that is cumulative and long-lasting.

PICKLEBALL IS BOOMING
GET INTO A PICKLE FOR HOLIDAY FITNESS
by Jyl SteinbackThe SFIA says growth is happening across the country, with participation spiking 40 percent during the pandemic. In Florida, St. Lucie County unveiled four new courts at its Lakewood Regional Park in September. Even bars are getting into the act, such as Dale Z’s, in Milwaukee, which christened its pickleball court in the same month.
Being a super athlete is not a prereq uisite for playing the game, according to Mac McCullough, a pickleballer in Scotts dale, Arizona. “I used to play other sports, but running and tennis got harder on my knees,” he says. “Pickleball has a lower net and a smaller court, so you aren’t running as much. Still, it gives you a good workout and it’s easier on your joints.”
Forget the gherkins and dills this holiday season; there’s another pickle in town. This one offers a great way to get in shape, increase happiness and bond with family and friends. It’s pickleball: a simple-to-learn sport that requires less run ning than tennis and can be played both indoors and outdoors. Players use oversized ping pong-style paddles to hit a wiffle ball over a low net on a badminton-sized court.
The Economist , and other media, say pickleball is America’s fastest growing sport. While seniors are particularly drawn to it, it is also catching on with all ages. “The fastpaced games make it easier for kids to stay engaged, as well as socialize with their peers,” says Sarah Ansboury, director of pickleball at Palmetto Dunes, in South Carolina. “Many families do pickleball events for holidays and reunions. Pickleball enables people of all ages to participate.”
According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA), there are 4.8 million pickleball players in America, with 51 percent between 6 and 34 years of age. At the end of 2021, there were 9,524 pickleball courts across the U.S.
In 2020, Mecklenburg County, in the Charlotte, North Carolina, area, opened the eightcourt John Stevens Pickleball Center, the eighth facility in the county where citizens can play the game. Since 2014, the number of public and private courts in the same region has soared from two to more than 100.
A 2016 study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise c onfirms that pickleball provides a good workout. According to the researchers, average heart rate and peak heart rate were higher during pickleball than when walking. Participants burned 40 percent more calories in 30 minutes of the sport than in 30 minutes of walking. Additionally, the study concludes, “Pickleball is more enjoyable than walking at a self-selected speed.”
Dr. Dennis Pena, a podiatrist from Phoenix, says the game has improved his hand-eye coordination. “The more I play pickleball, the better my balance, coordi nation and movement get,” he says. “It’s a good cardio workout, and I just feel better overall when I play regularly.”
A study from Western State Colorado University indicates that pickleball fosters many health benefits over a wide range of ages. The study followed 15 people between 40 to 85 that played for an hour three times
per week. All participants showed im provement in cardio fitness, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Research has confirmed that exercise boosts endorphins, which reduces stress and improves overall sense of well-being. A 2018 study from a group of researchers in the U.S. and South Korea showed that pick leball can help stave off depression, too. It reported that although depression rates are increasing in the U.S., people involved in “serious leisure” such as pickleball are less prone to depression.
It’s not just older people that can ben efit from the recreational activity. Teen obesity rates have skyrocketed nation wide, much of it due to a lack of exercise. Pickleball could help combat this. It is fun, easy to learn, boosts cardio fitness and can be played just about anywhere. Some colleges are now even offering pick leball scholarships.
Holly Fitzgerald, a physical therapist from Woburn, Massachusetts, gives this ad vice on how to get ready to play the game:
Squats with body mass can help develop and stretch quadriceps and hamstrings, enabling the ability to compress leg mus cles swiftly and consistently. This will help reduce gravitational pull to address the pickleball as it comes at us.
Large arm circles will stretch muscles and prepare them for the considerable movements that occur when striking a ball. Exercises that develop the core, such as core twisting, are also beneficial.
Places2Play.org provides a search engine to help find a court anywhere in America. Pick leball is a great way to get family and friends together over the holidays and beyond. It is fun, helps nurture relationships and it is a lot healthier than grazing on holiday leftovers while scanning social media.

by Marlaina DonatoDespite the whirl wind of our to-do and places-to-go lists, the wheel of the year turns once more, al lowing us to close another chapter of our lives with grace. If we take a breath, we might notice December’s invitation to kick off our shoes, curl up in our favorite chair and drop down into our heart space. Whether we light scented can dles for ambience, drink cocoa while sitting around a bonfire or continue time-honored spiritual customs, welcoming the light can ignite hope when we need it most. By cultivating the inner sun, that place deep within us that blazes with resilience and plenty, we not only fortify our selves, but everyone around us. Throughout the year, many of us invest in making healthy choices, but neglect soul sustenance. Swap ping trivial distractions for more face-to-face conversations, answering someone’s forgotten email or bringing a homemade pot of soup to a neighbor that is busy packing for a move creates a feast of light during all seasons.
“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle,” wrote Gautama Buddha, and perhaps we would be astounded to see how far the smallest gesture can travel. Inviting a friend that has no family to a
holiday dinner or out for coffee, spending more quality time with a child or buying a gift card for the receptionist at the dental office begets a chain reaction of small joys. When we fill our bellies with everyday magic, slow down to finish a cup of tea, turn off the news and notice the crescent moon nestled in the twi light, we become more inclined to feel blessed.
A few worthy inspirations to pass along:
n Make it a spiritual offering to choose joy today
n Close the year by letting go of a grievance or an outdated belief
n Tell someone how they bring light into your life
n Share a favorite book that is inspiring
n Acquire a new source of light—a lantern or salt lamp—for your favorite room
n Leave an uplifting quote on a loved one’s voicemail

Jeffrey Rediger on the Science of Miraculous Recoveries
by Sandra Yeyatifor remission is mind-boggling. Everything has a cause. We just aren’t asking the right questions.
From your studies, who beats the odds and why?
I broke down recoveries into four pillars of healing and well-being that were present in most cases: nutrition, healing the immune system, healing the stress response and healing identity and beliefs.
Board-certified psychiatrist Jeffrey Rediger is an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and medical director of McLean Southeast Adult Psychiatry and Community Affairs at McLean Hospital, near Boston. He holds a Master of Divinity degree from Prince ton Theological Seminary. For almost two decades, Rediger has studied spontaneous healing, pioneering the use of scientific tools like CT scans and lab tests, as well as personal interviews, to investigate surpris ing recoveries from incurable diseases. His findings are documented in his bestseller Cured: Strengthen Your Immune System and Heal Your Life, and have been discussed on The Oprah Winfrey Show, a TEDx talk and numerous public engagements.
How do you define sponta neous healing?
Science calls these events spontaneous remis sions, and doctors are taught they have no medical or scientific value. On the spiritual side, they’re called miracles. These terms hav en’t been examined with the tools of science. The word spontaneous in this context means without cause. Most doctors see inexplicable healings. To assume that there’s no cause
Can you describe key elements of the first pillar—nutrition?
People who got better when they weren’t supposed to seemed to have a common understanding of nutrition that centered around whole, plant-based foods and the elimination of processed foods and sugar. In Western countries, we’re taught that most people suffer from over-nutrition and obesity, rather that malnutrition. I believe we have massive malnutrition because of processed foods. When sugar crystals coarse through the bloodstream at high levels—as we see in U.S. diets—it causes little cuts which immune cells repair over and over, creating scab upon scab until you end up with atherosclerosis.
What about the next pillar— healing the immune system?
We need to honor the science of both Louis Pasteur, who proved that germs exist and play a role in disease, and Claude Bernard, who explained that if we take care of the inner terrain (what we now call the micro biome) we won’t get sick. We’re continually surrounded by millions of pathogens, bacteria, viruses—inside and outside of our bodies—that become invaders when some
thing breaks down in our terrain. We over use medicines, many of which suppress the immune system. So, we need to emphasize the magnificent 30-year research about the microbiome and take care of our bodies to avoid leaky gut and other conditions that act as entrance points for disease.
What about the pillar related to stress?
Most of the people I studied learned to eliminate certain stresses so they could maximize the quality of their remaining time. This led to healing. We have to widen our window of tolerance for stress so it doesn’t keep us in fight, flight, freeze or fawn, and to differentiate between “chal lenge stress” and “toxic stress”. Running a marathon can be a challenge stress that helps you reach your higher self, expand your understanding of what you can achieve and prompt a repair response for muscles. But if every day you’re told you don’t matter or are unappreciated at work, that toxic stress can wear down your un derstanding of your value.
The deep chasm we’ve created between mind and body doesn’t exist. Doctors are taught to find symptoms, make a diagnosis and start a medication. But whether a pa tient comes in for back pain, a heart attack or an autoimmune flare-up, it’s critical to ask them what has been stressful lately and try to get the story of the illness. Usual ly, that will prompt a cathartic recount of stresses that relate to what’s going on physically. Helping people understand the deeper story of their illness and find a path to healing around that can be life-saving.
Gabor Mate says, “If you don’t know how to say no, your body will eventually say no for you.” Our hospitals are full of people
who spent their entire lives taking care of everyone else and being conflict-avoidant. The body keeps the score and tells the story. We can learn to listen to what our bodies are telling us about honoring the dignity and value that we bring into the world; set up a life and boundaries that support that; and educate therapists and the public about what trauma is and how to recover from it.
Can you explain the fourth pillar—healing identity and beliefs?
This is the big one, which people said was the reason they were grateful for their illnesses. When people are diagnosed with an incurable illness, although they’re terrified, many (more than you would think) are also relieved. They’ll say, “If I only have six months to live, then I don’t have to take over the family business like dad’s pressuring me to do.” That preparation to die often be comes a doorway into a different life. When you decide to focus on what you need and want, that death of the false self allows the birth of a more authentic self that becomes its own journey to healing.
How does spirituality affect healing?
Spirituality has to do with how we feel about who we are, how we experience our value in the world and what kind of universe we live in. Is the universe friendly and caring or unfriendly and uncar ing? If we experience ourselves and others as human beings who have value and bring beauty into the world, that’s very different from feeling alone, defective or not good enough. How a person feels at a deep, conscious or unconscious level about themselves and the universe is a massive factor in terms of their vitality and health.
What can people learn from your research?
Take compassionate and firm charge of your minds, bodies and life. Doctors teach patients to be passive recipients of care, but the possibilities of healing come from within. It’s not about taking a medication as much as understanding our value, assertively taking steps to create a community of people who care about us and de veloping a path towards healing that’s rooted in an understanding of our deeper story.
In Western culture, if someone has a medical problem they’re sent to a physician. If they have a psychological problem, they see a psychotherapist. If they have a spiritual problem, they’re sent to the priest, rabbi or imam. That’s helpful, but we also need to stand back and look at the big picture. The people I studied got better because they brought mind, body and spirit together and integrated it into an empowering meaning that made sense to them. The spiritual piece can’t be partitioned. It animates the whole.

SUSTAINABLE HOLIDAYS
EASY TIPS FOR AN ECO-FRIENDLY SEASON
by Kirby BaldwinSavor Local Fare
The holidays are upon us, and that means decking the halls, gathering with loved ones, exchanging gifts and treats—and creating a lot of waste in the process. From Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, Americans throw away 25 percent more
trash than at any other time of year. That’s 1 million extra tons each week, primarily due to waste from holiday gifts and décor. Fortunate ly, there are ways to cut down on consump tion to lessen the environmental impact of the holiday season without sacrificing any joy.
Ditch grocery store lines and instead shop for the holiday meal at a nearby family farm. By participating in the local food movement, we will not only enjoy fresh, seasonal ingre dients while supporting the local economy, but also sustain farms that build soil health, promote animal well-being and offer a more delicious and nutritionally superior final product. Purchasing food directly from farmers also eliminates the extra packaging and the carbon footprint of transportation that comes with store-bought goods. In addition to offering fruits and veg etables for holiday pies and soufflés, regional farms can also be good sources for locally sourced grains, holiday meats, baked goods and cheeses. Festive cock tails can be purchased from a neighbor hood distillery, brewery or winery, many of which source their ingredients from local farmers.
Ronald Mirante, founder of Bone-In Food, runs a weekly food delivery service that provides only sustainable, nutrient-dense foods sourced from local farm partners. Ac cording to Mirante, “Shopping for food locally with your farmers for the holiday helps them move offerings they have raised all season long. This empowers the local food commu nity and makes their operations sustainable by preventing food waste and allowing for economic preparation for next year’s harvest.”
For a state-by-state directory of local farmers of meat, eggs and dairy products from 100 percent pastured animals, visit EatWild.com. A directory of family farms and farmers markets, along with restaurants and grocery stores that feature locally produced food, can be found at LocalHarvest.org
Gift Greener
Instead of using unrecyclable gift wrapping paper, switch to a recy cled alternative or wrap gifts in pieces of fabric, newsprint or kraft paper that can be repurposed or recycled. To eliminate shopping and wrapping altogether, give the gift of an experience, which allows loved ones to create lasting memories.
Cater experiential gifts to the needs and wants of the recipient. An exhausted new parent will appreciate a restaurant gift certificate or a coupon to pay for a babysitter. Give the budding golfer lessons with a local pro, the theater lover tickets to an upcoming show and the selfless caregiver a spa treatment to help them feel pampered and refreshed. For the person that seems to have everything, make a donation in their name to a worthy cause that matters deeply to them.
According to publishing executive and mother Tacy Quinn, who runs the Instagram account @friluftslivingfamily, “As our kids get older, we love to find outdoor adventure ideas that are fun to do as a family and get us off our screens. One of our holiday gift-giv ing traditions each year is to purchase or renew a membership to a local nature organization. Many organizations have great family programs that are included with yearly memberships, so this annual gift means we get a whole year of outdoor experiences to enjoy together. We’ve gone on full-moon hikes, tapped and harvested our own maple syrup, enjoyed solstice bonfire parties and more. Giving a membership gift helps everyone enjoy the outdoors and sustain the natural places we love.”
When it’s not possible to gift an experience, shop locally for gifts made of natural materials, such as a beautiful, wooden, cutting board, a cozy pair of wool socks or a piece of pottery handmade by local artisans. Christmas stockings can create unnecessary waste for the sake of filling them to the brim. Try replacing plastic odds and ends with fruits, nuts or handmade treats like cookies or granola for more sustainable—and tastier—stocking stuffers.
Deck the Halls
For the most sustainable holiday tree, opt for a potted or locally cut, native choice. Live trees protect the soil, serve as wildlife habitats and filter the air during the six to eight years they’re growing. They also create local jobs. After the holidays are over, the potted trees can be planted. Cut live trees should either be mulched or recycled, rather than thrown in a landfill.
Merry and Bright
Making just a few simple swaps in gifting, feasting and decorating will ease holiday consumption and lessen its environmental impacts without subtracting any of the joy.

PUT A HEALTHIER TWIST ON FAVORITE RECIPES
by Sheila JulsonWhen hosting a holiday brunch, it may be tempting to serve breakfast and lunch classics like quiche, eggs Benedict and huevos ran cheros, but many of these dishes can be full of hidden calories, unhealthy fats and too much sodium. With a few easy modifica tions, healthier versions are possible.
According to Jessica Levinson, a New York registered dietitian and author of 52Week Meal Planner, it’s important to read nutrition labels, remove empty calories and introduce nutritious alternatives. As an example, yogurt and granola parfaits may seem innocent, but are often loaded with added sugar. “A serving size of most grano las is only one-quarter of a cup, which isn’t much, so use granola sparingly,” she says, adding that parfaits made with low-fat Greek yogurt and fresh fruit instead of jam are healthier choices.
Traditional quiches are usually made with heavy cream and a buttery pie crust. Levinson recommends a crustless vegetable frittata instead, as it is naturally gluten-free.
“If you don’t want to skip the crust alto gether, look for a pre-made, whole wheat crust or make your own,” she says. To elim inate dairy, consider using non-dairy milk and omitting cheese in the recipe.
For eggs Benedict, Levinson suggests skipping the hollandaise sauce, topping the poached eggs with mashed avocado and using a whole grain bread or English muffin for the base. “Instead of ham, try smoked salmon, which has beneficial ome ga-3 fatty acids,” she says.
Whole grain oats are a heart-healthy option, but oatmeal served brûlée-style is topped with additional sugar, notes Frances Largeman-Roth, a New York registered dietitian and author of Smoothies & Juices.
“It’s better to opt for oatmeal and fruit, with a drizzle of real maple syrup,” she says. Largeman-Roth likes mixing savory and sweet, to add variety and protein to the brunch plate. “Instead of just having a stack of pancakes, split it with your friends or family, and then have a small, veggie-filled omelet. You’ll feel much more satisfied.”
Planning the Holiday Brunch Spread
When putting together a menu, Levinson ad vocates incorporating all of the components of a balanced meal: lean protein, carbohydrates from whole grains, fruit and veggies, and low-fat dairy or plant-based substitutes. She says, “If you’re making pancakes or waffles, use whole grain flour when possible, and serve with a side of yogurt, fresh fruit and real maple syrup.”
According to Largeman-Roth, egg lovers will enjoy a veggie-packed omelet or frittata with either potatoes or bread on the side, but not both. Watch out for fried foods and use sauces and cream sparingly or find substitutes. If the family is dining out, she cautions that brunch dishes are often served with extra sauces and syrups, adding sodium and sugar. “Try to ask for them on the side,” she advises. “It’s not about completely avoiding them, but it’s nice to be able to control the amount that you ’re adding to your pancakes or waffles.”

The Best Gift of All
TEACHING CHILDREN THE SPIRIT OF GIVING
by Madiha Saeedourselves. These neurons play a considerable role in the development of speech, language, learning, emotional intelligence, empathy and understanding, so children need to see and receive acts of giving and love to become givers themselves.
Giving Heals
Teaching children the value of gener osity and kindness is not just good for the world, it is good for our kids, too. Studies have shown that acts of altruism can boost the immune system, lower blood pres sure, increase self-esteem, reduce depression and lower stress levels. Selfless contributions also can foster a sense of belonging, whether they are donating material things, sharing their time or freely conveying love and kind ness. A magnanimous child is repaid with benefits that nourish the body and soul.
Empathy and Mirror Neurons
To transform children into givers, they need to learn how to share and comprehend other people’s feelings. Known as cognitive empathy, it involves understanding another person’s emotions on an intellectual level, taking into consideration their situation and anticipating how they might react.
Since the 1990s, scientists have been researching mirror neurons which respond to actions that we observe in the same way as when we actually perform those actions
With mental health conditions in children on the rise, charitable behavior can improve their mental well-being and help them secrete “feelgood” chemicals in the brain like oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin. “I think helping our kids experience the happiness that comes from giving to others is probably one of the most valuable ways we can nurture generosity in them,” says Lara Aknin, an assistant profes sor of psychology at Simon Fraser University, in Canada. “It sets off this positive cycle. Giving makes people happy and happiness promotes giving.”
Functional MRIs of people that donate to charities have shown that the act of giving stimulates reward centers of the brain where endorphins are released. These hormones lower cortisol, improve blood circulation, lower blood pressure and heart rate, improve digestion, clear out toxins, help the immune system fight infections and renew energy to repair cells and fight cancer. Other benefits include lower inflammation overall, improved sleep, decreased feelings of restlessness and reductions in chronic pain.
Giving and Social Support
In a 2020 study reported in JAMA Network, researchers found that young adults ages 19 to 20 that perceived higher levels of social support—the feeling that there is someone they can depend on for help should they need it—were less likely to report depressive and
anxiety symptoms or suicidal ideation one year later. The study also found that even in cases where people previously experienced mental health problems, social support was beneficial for mental health later on.
Love and secure attachments, such as those experienced through acts of giving, strengthen the body; help regulate emo tions, attention and behavior; mitigate the effects of stress; and promote lifelong, healthy development.
Volunteering
Volunteering makes an immeasurable difference in the lives of others and creates a sense of purpose in the person doing it. Sci ence has shown that engaging in volunteer work can decrease depression, reduce stress, increase longevity and help the person stay mentally and physically active. Volunteers get to meet others, develop new relationships and strengthen existing relationships with those that have similar goals and interests. There are many opportunities for children and parents to volunteer through school, religious and nonprofit organizations.
Random Acts of Kindness and Generosity
Random acts of kindness and generosity include smiling, holding the door open for someone and reaching out to loved ones. Include a child in these activities and encourage them to do the same. “When you see your children being generous, point it out and praise them,” recommends The Center for Parenting Education. “Help them put into words the positive feelings they may have as they help others.”
The most important ingredient to devel op a child with a healthy brain and body is love. Children need positive experiences for pathways in their brain and body to work. Developing empathy for themselves and others increases emotional strength and self-regulation. Improve the life of a child— physically, emotionally and spiritually—by teaching them the simple of act of giving.

Holiday Treats for Cats and Dogs
EASY-TO-MAKE FESTIVE RECIPES TO DELIGHT PETS
by Tonya WilhelmThe holidays are a great time to con nect with loved ones, including family pets. Although treats bring such joy to their lives, keep in mind that not all foods around the holiday table are safe for dogs and cats. There are, however, plenty of pet-safe ingredients, some of which are actually beneficial.
Cranberries, for example, have been classified as a “super food”, which means they provide many beneficial nutrients and antioxi dants, such as vitamins C, E and K, plus manga nese. They are also high in fiber, which supports gut health. When feeding them to a pet, it is important to choose 100 percent cranberries that do not contain any sugars or preservatives.
When cooking up a batch of pet treats, coconut flour is healthier than the traditional, all-purpose flour, because it contains more fiber, protein and healthy fats. It is also glu ten-free, making it a better alternative for pets with allergies.
Beef gelatin is chock-full of health benefits for pets, as it contains amino acids that help break down food, repair body tissue, support the immune system and provide energy. Among its numerous advantages, gelatin strengthens bones, muscles and cartilage, while also improving gut health, skin and fur. Always check the ingredient list. Use 100 percent gelatin and make sure there is nothing else included, especially Xylitol or birch sugar.
Sweet potatoes provide a wealth of nutrients from which both dogs and cats can benefit. They are a good source of fiber and high in antioxidants, including beta carotene, which is rich in vitamin A and supports good cognition and lung strength.
Turkey breast supplies a wide range of B vitamins, including B6 and B12. It also provides iron, potassium, zinc and selenium, which help support a healthy immune system.
All of these treats make great pres ents. Place them in a decorative container and gift them to pet-loving friends and family.

Hi,
Natural Virus Killer
Copper can stop a virus
before it starts
By Doug CornellScientists have discovered a natural way to kill germs fast. Now thousands of people are using it against viruses and bacteria that cause illness.
Colds and many other illnesses start when viruses get in your nose and multiply. If you don’t stop them early, they spread and cause misery.
Hundreds of studies confirm copper kills viruses and bacteria almost instantly just by touch.
That’s why ancient Greeks and Egyptians used copper to purify water and heal wounds. They didn’t know about viruses and bacteria, but now we do.
“The antimicrobial activity of copper is well established.” National Institutes of Health.
Scientists say copper’s high conductance disrupts the electrical balance in a microbe cell and destroys it in seconds.
The EPA recommended hospitals use copper for touch surfaces like faucets and doorknobs. This cut the spread of MRSA and other illnesses by over half, and saved lives.
The strong scientific evidence gave inventor Doug Cornell an idea. He made a smooth copper probe
with a tip to fit in the bottom of the nostril, where viruses collect.
When he felt a tickle in his nose like a cold about to start, he rubbed the copper gently in his nose for 60 seconds.
“It worked!” he exclaimed. “The cold never happened. I used to get 2-3 bad colds every year. Now I use my device whenever I feel a sign I am about to get sick.”
He hasn’t had a cold in 10 years.
Users say:
“It works! I love it!”
“I can’t believe how good my nose feels.”
“Is it supposed to work that fast?” “One of the best presents ever.” “Sixteen flights, not a sniffle!” “Cold sores gone!”
“It saved me last holidays. The kids all got sick, but not me.”
“I am shocked! My sinus cleared, no more headache, no more congestion.”
“Best sleep I’ve had in years!”
After his first success with it, he asked relatives and friends to try it. They all said it worked, so he patented CopperZap® and put it on the market.
Soon hundreds of people had tried it. 99% said copper worked if they used it right away at the first sign of germs, like a tickle in the nose or a scratchy throat.
Longtime users say they haven’t been sick in years. They have less stress, less medical costs, and more time to enjoy life.
Soon people found other things they could use it against.
Colds Flu
Virus variants
Sinus trouble
Cold sores
Fever blisters
Canker sores
Strep throat
Night stuffiness
Morning congestion
Nasal drip
Infected sores
Infected wounds Styes Warts Ringworm Other microbial threats
The handle is curved and textured to increase contact. Copper can kill germs picked up on fingers and hands after you touch things other people have touched.
The EPA says copper works just as well when tarnished.
Dr. Bill Keevil led one of the science teams. He placed millions of viruses on a copper surface. “They started to die literally as soon as they touched it.”
CopperZap® is made in the USA of pure copper. It has a 90-day full money back guarantee. Price $79.95. Get $10 off each CopperZap with code NATA33
