letter from publisher It’s hard to believe, I know, but the holiday season has arrived once again. This year, our festivities might look and feel much different than in the past, but we still have so many reasons to be grateful and to celebrate. Even if we’re socially distanced from loved ones and cannot gather around a table in person for the traditional Thanksgiving feast, we can take a minute to pause and reflect on all the ways our own strength, resilience and connection to humanity has grown in 2020. We are all in this journey together, and that alone is cause for immense gratitude. So as the holidays kick off this month, here’s a glimpse into what Natural Awakenings has in store to help you maintain balance and wellness throughout the season.

Pre-existing medical issues have been talked about at length this year in the midst of COVID-19, and one condition that affects a major segment of the population is diabetes.

Our feature article for this month delves into the numerous lifestyle changes we all can implement on a daily basis to lower the risk of becoming diabetic. Nearly one in three Americans has pre-diabetes, and another one in 10 has the actual illness, but we can push back against these statistics with simple, effective and accessible strategies. These include avoiding toxins, consuming nutritious whole foods, limiting the intake of sugars, bypassing antibiotics and statins, making adequate sleep a priority, and using medicinal herbs to boost insulin.

One area of wellness that all too often receives nothing more than surface-level attention is skin care. We want a clear, radiant, smooth and youthful appearance, but we tend to overlook the importance of caring for our skin at a cellular depth. However, because skin is the largest organ in our bodies—and the one most exposed to harsh toxins, chemicals and environmental factors—it deserves the kindest treatment possible. This month’s “Healthy Ways” article features natural home remedies to pamper the skin with ingredients most of us already have in our kitchen cabinets. Learn how to make gentle and chemical-free scrubs, toners, balms or masks with green tea, black pepper, turmeric, oats, coconut oil and honey.

Of course, this November issue would not be complete without a nod to Thanksgiving. While travel restrictions, tight finances and social distance precautions are still in effect for many of us, the occasion can still be special. Our “Conscious Eating” article offers creative ideas and recipes for a plant-based meal that’s sure to delight all the taste buds in attendance. So gather some fresh, seasonal produce for a Thanksgiving that’s both nutritious and delicious.

t 8 a.m. on December 5, Keep Charlotte Beautiful (KCB) is hosting a “no-touch” recycling event in Port Charlotte. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, KCB is asking attendees to place items in the trunk of their vehicles and allow them to be unloaded by those working at the event.

This recycling event is the perfect opportunity for those that have electronic items collecting dust; clothes taking up room in their closets; old prescriptions sitting around; and/or documents that need to be shredded.

The list of acceptable electronics for recycling include: desktop and laptop computers; TVs and monitors (two free per car; $20 donation to KCB to defray cost for each additional TV or monitor); servers and server racks; peripherals (keyboards, mice and speakers); switches, routers and network equipment; hard drives, tape drives and other storage devices; projectors; printers; copiers; scanners; plotters; fax machines; cell phones; rechargeable and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) batteries; power supplies and adapters; consumer electronics; telephones; personal digital assistants (PDAs); tablets; game consoles and controllers; DVD/CD/VCR players; and stereo equipment.

Beneath the Surface of Anti-Aging: Q&A with Dr. Anna Baker has also been named Sarasota’s favorite anti-aging practitioner, and it was an honor to speak with her for this month’s “Community Spotlight.”

s another year draws to a close, we are once again confronted with the passage of time and its effect on our bodies.

The grooves, furrows, lines, droops and wrinkles in our faces are reminders that age is inevitable—and none of us are exempt.

However, while we cannot rewind the clock, we can restore the same fresh, radiant, youthful appearance that once greeted us in the mirror. I’m not talking about those “quick fix” potions in the cosmetic aisle filled with artificial, chemical additives we can barely pronounce. These claim to transform us back into our younger selves, but their results are short-lived, and their ingredient lists can be toxic.

On the contrary, I’m referring to a natural and sustainable alternative that not only reclaims the vibrance of youth, but probes beneath the surface to rejuvenate skin cells, retighten facial muscles and create long-term results.

So how is all of this possible? Enter: Dr. Anna Baker, an inventor, engineer, Doctor of Oriental Medicine and the founder of two anti-aging modalities—Faces by Dr. Anna and Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna. She 14

Natural Awakenings: What occurs in the skin’s aging process, both on the surface and at the cellular depth, and why are most mainstream skincare products or services unable to achieve sustainable anti-aging results?

Dr. Anna: The cosmetic industry refers to “skin aging” as a person grows older, but it is more a function of muscles beneath the skin losing their tone. Those who do resistance training on the body will understand that muscles are held at both ends on the skeletal bones, so that exercise can tighten them which makes the toned muscles smaller.

However, facial muscles cannot be exercised because they are held at just one end on the skull. The other end is held by the skin which is elastic and, therefore, impossible to use for resistance. The first indicators of muscle aging start in a person’s mid-twenties. These changes are difficult to see because, as the muscles begin to lose their tone, they expand and puff out which causes the face to grow fuller.

This continues in the thirties until enough tone has diminished that, as the forties approach, the face starts to become longer and flatter. Then as a person reaches their fifties, the changes are noticeable as the face widens and flattens even more. By this time, the cheeks will lose fullness and droop into the jawline, and the jowls will start to appear. The muscles continue losing their tone in the sixties, seventies and beyond which causes a progression of more lines, folds and wrinkles in face.

This process is like when a balloon deflates. When a person is young, they have a small, tight, inflated balloon. However, as they age and lose muscle “air,” their balloon becomes longer, flatter and rippled from the deflation.

The reason that mainstream antiaging products do not yield sustainable results is because they use chemicals which micro-burn the skin. The body then sends collagen and other repair products to heal this burn damage which puffs the area out temporarily, making the user think their fine lines and wrinkles are gone. But when the body heals, the repair chemicals are removed, and those lines or wrinkles return—sometimes deeper than before the treatment. Some of these products are applied daily, so the micro-damage never has a chance to heal, leading to the potential of skin cancer after long-term use.

Doctors warn against sunburns due to the cancer risk, but too often, they will damage the skin with a host of treatments like chemical peels, laser surfacing, microdermabrasion, intense pulse light (IPL), micro-needling and the list continues. All of these treatments work temporarily just until the damage is healed.

NA: Will you describe how your acupuncture facelift technique works, the results it can deliver and what differentiates it from other anti-aging procedures?

Dr. Anna: Faces by Dr. Anna is an acupuncture facelift technique that I invented which retightens the muscles back from their natural progression of aging over a series of treatments. The muscles are retightened by 12 small, hair-thin needles placed on the scalp and neck in muscle attachment groups. I then use a special quantum-level manipulation which causes the muscles to retighten in small additive steps through the course of each treatment.

Patients can choose how far back they want to reverse the aging, so to help with that decision, I show them photographed results that accurately depict the beforeand-after process of this technique. When a patient reaches a level they want to maintain, the aging does not stop; however, only one treatment is required every 18 months to maintain the lift. This result is unique among all the other non-surgical techniques.

The method of acupuncture facelift done by other practitioners just inserts needles on the cheeks to puff them out with micro-damage, and this has to be performed monthly. That form of treatment cannot be used on any other areas of the face and neck, but my procedure retightens

all muscles of the face and neck including the eyelids, nose, ears, lips and eyebrows.

NA: Now on a similar note, will you describe your Pearl Cream skincare line, what ingredients it contains, the results it can deliver, and what differentiates this product from other variations currently on the market?

Dr. Anna: Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna achieves the exact same muscle retightening outcomes as my acupuncture facelift—it’s just a slower, more gradual process. Pearls have been used in Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years to heal and rebuild the skin muscle after injuries or burns. They were also used as an ancient beauty secret of the Chinese empresses.

Pearls are formed when an oyster sucks in grit or parasites. Its shell lining then secretes a mixture of amino acids and micro-particles of shell which three dimensionally encapsulate the intruder and build successive layers until a pearl is created. In humans, the same three dimensional action of these amino acids can be used to retighten muscles and densify bones.

Pearl creams are still manufactured in China, but they contain preservatives for shelf life. I discovered that preservatives kill the amino acids and prevent them from tightening muscles, so Pearl Cream

by Dr. Anna is made from pearls, Chinese herbs and a Vitamin E oil mixture with no preservatives. There are different mixtures of Chinese herbs for each product in my line, tailored for women, men, sports performance and pain management.

NA: Will you summarize your professional background and how you became not only an alternative medicine practitioner, but also the inventor of these unique, results-driven skincare products and services?

Dr. Anna: For 12 years, I worked at Boeing in Seattle as a research and development (R&D) engineer. I was an inventor and received 21 patents for my work in materials similar to the tiles used on space shuttles. However, I became sensitized to the chemicals I worked near and, therefore, had to leave that profession.

At this point, I returned to school and became a Doctor of Oriental Medicine. After establishing my Sarasota practice in 1998, I then trained in acupuncture facelift, but the method I studied was both impractical and did not yield results for a neck lift. So I invented my own three dimensional muscle tightening acupuncture face and neck lift process which offered such unique results that I started to rigorously document it with photos. I now have a database of over 700 images of patients from 28 to 96 years old.

Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna was invented in 2009 after my patients and I suffered an allergic reaction to a batch of pearl cream from China. My R&D background made it possible to start working on my own pearl cream. Because of my own chemical sensitivity, I made it without any preservatives or chemicals. I was shocked to discover the muscle retightening properties of these pearl amino acids when I documented the results.

The Pearl Cream muscle retightening mirrored the exact result as my acupuncture facelift—the only difference being the process

took longer. I then tested this cream on a group of 84 volunteers, and the photographed results showed that I had something unique. When a person discontinues their use of the cream, the results still last for a minimum of six months before any tightening whatsoever is lost.

The Chinese herbs in the Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna brighten the complexion and remove toxins from the skin. The micro-particles of shell give it an SPF of 10. The cream is an excellent moisturizer, and there is also a body lotion formula for those hard-to-tighten areas such as the upper arms and inner thighs. It is also ideal for crepey skin and to rebuild muscles on the back of the hands—an area will often reveal age more so than the face.

I tell people that I am an engineer, not a marketer.

I refuse to sell a product or service that does not work. Moreover, as a woman, I am tired of seeing “before-and-after results” of beauty products shown with artificial lighting, makeup enhancements and Photoshop tricks. My results are meticulously controlled and scientifically documented. People can consult with me and observe for themselves what results are possible through a series of comparison images.

NA: What measures have you taken, both in your practice and in your Pearl Cream store, to ensure the health and safety of clients during this COVID-19 pandemic?

Dr. Anna: I have implemented the following health and safety practices for my acupuncture facelift clients. Each patient waits in the car until I come out and take their temperature. Masks are then worn both entering and exiting the office. I have also installed a ventilation system in my acupuncture treatment rooms. The patient lays under an exhaust fan powered suction hose that pulls all breath droplets out the window. The patient can remove their mask during a procedure, and the treatment room is sanitized after each patient leaves.

Answers to Foot Pain

Foot Pain Solutions

eet are the body’s foundation. We depend on them so heavily, in fact, that persistent foot pain can quickly become a lifestyle challenge. Performing daily tasks can seem impossible if intense foot pain is involved. Let’s explore some of the main causes of foot pain and the solutions that can provide relief.

The types of foot pain range from plantar fasciitis or metatarsalgia to Achilles tendonitis or Morton’s neuroma. Some painful feet are arthritic, and others might be painful due to chronic ankle sprain.

These are all different problems, but they share one element in common—the inability to handle the normal forces we subject our feet to daily. Causes of this failure include shoes, prior injury, and hereditary problems such as flat feet or high arches.

As many people are aware, the wrong type of shoe can cause foot problems.

Long-term wear of high heels often leads to bunions, hammer toes and fallen arches.

In addition, slip-on shoes frequently cause toe clenching to keep them from slipping off which can lead to plantar fasciitis. What many people do not know, however, is that just wearing shoes of any kind for a whole lifetime can lead to foot problems.

Three Causes of Foot Pain

Three research studies in different parts of the world that compared barefoot-living villagers with shoe-wearing relatives in cities showed that people who live barefoot have almost no structural foot problems. It turns out that walking barefoot uses more 16

muscular strength in the lower leg which helps to maintain support from tendons that attach from those muscles to the foot.

It also stands to reason that people who are inactive or sedentary could be more prone to foot problems due to insufficient strength in their lower leg muscles.

Another significant problem for many is past trauma to either the leg or foot.

Physical injury can leave residual stiffening and distortion in the connective tissue called fascia. This can, in turn, cause muscular imbalance and weakness that leads to pain—whether it is in the plantar fascia on the bottom of the foot, the pad at the ball of the foot, or the tendon attachment at the back of the heel. In the specific case of chronic ankle sprain, the original injury can cause the ankle to remain weak, so that a person might repeatedly turn their ankle and reinjure it.

Of course, for some people the only cause of their foot pain is they inherited flat feet or abnormally high arches, either of which can lead to extra stress on the foot. With hereditary flat feet, the foot never develops a full arch, so the spring action that the arch of the foot normally provides is diminished. With less spring, there is less protection of the foot from the stresses of walking, running, jumping and standing.

You might think that people with high arches would have opposite issues from flat feet, but actually, a high arch tends to be more rigid (and less springy) than a regularly shaped arch which places more stress on the feet when they are bearing weight. In the end, both problems tend to create arch pain.

When we look at solutions to foot pain, we should start again with shoes (or the alternative of not wearing shoes at all). While growing up barefoot can be beneficial for your feet, barefoot living will not necessarily help someone who has worn shoes all their life.

First, it takes time to build the leg strength to tolerate barefoot walking. A second issue is the hard surfaces that most people tend to live on today. Wood or tile floors, cement sidewalks and asphalt roads are not materials which feet are naturally built for.

For someone who has foot pain, walking on hard surfaces will likely exacerbate the discomfort. While there are some instances where barefoot walking is helpful— such as on sand or soft earth—most people need shoes for support and protection.

The real solution is to wear the type of shoe that will benefit your feet.

While choosing the correct shoe can involve many considerations, certain basic features are important. The arch should roughly match the shape of your foot.

Most people should have at least moderate arch support. People with flat feet should not use too much arch support, although a slight amount is important. Those with high arches usually benefit from a fuller arch support. In many high arch cases, a shoe that is otherwise well built might need either supplemental support or replacement of the built-in support with a more robust arch insert.

Shoes with a sole that is too rigid do not encourage as much leg muscle activity.

An ideal shoe must allow flexibility where the toes bend up with also some back and forth twist at the arch. Also, the heel cup should align vertically and not tilt inward.

Otherwise the shoe will encourage pronation of the foot and, therefore, foot pain in the long run.

Fascia and Feet

As already mentioned, past physical trauma can leave changes in the fascia (connective tissue) that lead to pain.

Manual therapy treatments that release fascia restrictions can help restore muscular balance and joint stability, and this can relieve foot pain. Fascia release is a focus of my practice, and I have helped many

It is important to emphasize how much fascia can be involved with foot pain.

Even when there are physical changes to the foot such as bunions or arthritis, much of the pain is often caused by fascia distortion. Stiffening of this connective tissue can alter muscle tension and joint stability which often contributes to structural changes like bunions and arthritis.

Treating these restrictions can relieve pain, even though it usually cannot reverse the structural change. Those with naturally high or low arches could develop restrictions in fascia more easily, due to greater stress on their feet. Wearing proper shoes with the right arch supports is critical for these people. When necessary, custom orthotic inserts can be relieving, and fascia release therapy is almost always helpful.

Every case of foot pain is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution.

Immediately, we applied CDC protocols. We stopped all face-to-face patient contact, and all staff members in my office were tested. We underwent both the antibody testing and the nasal viral testing. We performed contact tracing and notified everyone, both patients and vendors, that had been in the office those two days.

Five days after that outdoor family gathering, my receptionist (and interestingly, the youngest staff member) developed symptoms on October 1. She awoke with a severe headache which persisted for four days. She had a terrible sore throat and mild nasal congestion. She never experienced a fever, cough, or loss of taste and smell.

She had been on a preventive regimen of Drainage homeopathic drops, Zinc, Vitamin C and Beta Glucan prior to contracting COVID-19. This protocol was advised to her during a physician consultation, but please do consult with your own medical practitioner before starting any kind of treatment to find the course that is safest and most effective for you.

My whole team immediately went into quarantine for 10–14 days and worked remotely. The staff rallied office communications, while physically distancing, as my office manager delivered the supplements and positive encouragement to our sick team member’s doorstep. When the rest of us tested negative on a repeat test after eight days, we ended the quarantine after 10 days and returned to the office.

We all felt the added emotional pressure from quarantine, and I am grateful for such a dedicated team. Experiencing COVID-19 was scary for our staff member because the unknown progression of varied symptoms leaves a patient with uncertainty of what to expect. She was isolated alone without a caregiver which made the entire ordeal even more difficult too. I felt it was important to share our story. We are grateful for her resilience and full recovery—and for the rest of us being spared infection including our patients, customers and vendors.

From Exhausted to Ironman Acupuncturist

I

t’s 3:40 a.m.

I have bleary eyes. I’m hungry.

I’m thirsty. I grab a protein drink and morning supplements.

I pull on my shoes, do my pre-workout routine and head out on my run. I stumble along an early morning trail, determined to complete my mileage before my company meeting at 8 a.m. I almost make it, call in at 8:00, and slide into the office at 8:07. Thanks to Zoom for making all of this possible.

It’s 7:00 p.m. I’m hungry. All I can think of is pizza and beer. I arrive home after work and a recovery training session where I train specific nerves to re-engage, so that my weight is equally distributed on both sides, and my right knee works properly. A friend shows up with a gift delivery of apples, pineapple and melons.

After a snack of an apple and gluten-free bread with almond butter, and I’ve applied moisturizers and liniments to all appropriate areas of my body, I’m on my bike. It’s dusk, so I’m trying to keep the insects out of my mouth and eyes as I bike off into the night. I am so grateful for Legacy trail which makes night riding safe.

Why on earth would I do this? Is it even healthy? I’m training for a race that is long—a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike ride, then followed by a 26.2 mile marathon. I’ve never run a marathon before and won’t have run one before race day. My triathlon friends tell me to just keep moving—whatever I do, don’t stop.

Sitting down with one of my most respected healer colleagues, she asks me the obvious question: “Why are you doing this? Why put yourself through so much?”

She’s not even referring to the sacrifices of time with loved ones. The answer that sur20

faces is this: “It’s my experience that either adversity pursues us, or we pursue it.” She nods sagely, then responds in her lovely Russian accent, “I get it,” and we move on.

Since my earliest days as a student in clinic, the most difficult cases found me.

The chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia were always on my schedule. And somehow, even in those earliest days, I tended to see progress. It was frustrating for me that it was so slow—I wanted results fast. But my clients were often satisfied that improvements were being made. They were tired of being sick and tired, but until then, couldn’t find what worked.

As I moved through graduate school, I was careful to maintain a nutritious diet. I became a certified personal trainer mainly to keep myself on track. I knew if I had to teach fitness, then I would do it. However, by the end of four intense years of constant study, I was depleted. Then, by the time I moved halfway across the country, sold 90% of my belongings, and started my acupuncture clinic, I was absolutely exhausted.

Even though I was motivated and passionate about what I was doing in life, I also struggled to remain coherent and awake. A one mile run would leave me tired for days, and I would often take two or three catnaps each day. Not to mention, I was newly married and had no sex drive.

It was embarrassing and demoralizing. I felt like a hypocrite.

Luckily—and that’s how the best outcomes have always manifested for me, through divine gifts from the Universe—I had enrolled in a training class that would change my life. While I am a constant student, graduating with an additional certification as an Applied Clinical Nutritionist, this class would teach me how to interpret the signals from my body in order to identify what I needed.

Within two days of that class, I started to see a light again, and within two weeks, I felt 80% like my old self. This was my introduction to applied kinesiology and

Nutrition Response Testing. I have used this system ever since, both personally and professionally, and I have seen hundreds of lives transform in the process, just like mine.

It’s been a journey. Just four years ago, a friend I knew who competed in ultra marathons encouraged me to stretch myself. I blurted out, “I could never do that. There’s no way I could do this kind of exercise before work. My adrenals are too tired.” But here I am now, testing myself, learning daily, experimenting with various supplements, techniques and diet types to understand how to be the kind of friend to my body that it is to me.

The herb black cohosh has long been used to relieve menopausal symptoms, and a new study in Pharmaceuticals suggests that it’s most effective when combined with rhodiola, an adaptogenic herb known for balancing stress responses, as well as supporting brain, liver and heart health. Researchers from the Democratic Republic of Georgia Zhordania Institute of Reproductology divided 220 women into three groups. After 12 weeks, those given the combination of the two herbs reported 71 percent fewer menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, and 67 percent fewer psychological and physical symptoms. These were significantly better results than for those that received either a high or low dose of black cohosh or a placebo.

Try Rhodiola and Black Cohosh for Menopausal Symptoms

Have Conflicts Mediated for Best Results Active mediation by a third party provides better outcomes for couples’ arguments by heightening activity in the “reward” part of the brain that generates romantic love.

That’s the conclusion of researchers from the University of Geneva in a study in the journal Cortex that included 36 heterosexual couples that had been married for one year. After receiving brain scans with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and filling out a questionnaire, the couples argued for an hour about a key conflict such as intimacy, finances or in-laws. Half the couples received guidance from a professional mediator; the other couples did not.

Afterward, couples with the active mediator reported feeling more satisfied with the content and progress of the discussion and had fewer residual issues. When individuals were shown photos of their spouse and another unknown person during a second fMRI, the couples that had mediation were more likely to experience heightened activation in the nucleus accumbens, a key region in the reward circuit of the brain linked to pleasure, motivation and feelings like love. The more satisfied a person was with the mediation, the greater the neural activation. “Our results suggest for the first time that third-party mediation has a significant and positive impact on the way couples argue, both behaviourally and neurally,” concludes Olga Klimecki, a study author and researcher at the Swiss Center for Affective Sciences.

Green Hangover Discarded Solar Panels Result in Toxic Pollution

Photovoltaic panels, used to produce renewable solar power, become complex pieces of electronic waste at the end of their functional lives. The International Renewable Energy Agency projects that up to 78 million metric tons of solar panels will be discarded by 2050, and that the world will be generating about 6 million metric tons of new solar e-waste annually.

Recovering the silver and silicon inside them requires costly, specialized solutions. Many solar panels contain lead that can leach out as they decompose in landfills. Some panels are exported to developing countries with weak environmental protections. Most are rated for about 25 years of use, so a major influx is due to arrive shortly.

Nonprofit PV Cycle (PVCycle. org) collects thousands of tons of solar e-waste across the European Union each year, where producers are required to ensure that their solar panels are recycled properly. Recycle PV Solar (RecyclePV.solar), one of the only recyclers in the U.S., where almost no regulations exist, reports reclaiming just 10 percent of the country’s solar waste. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory is investigating new processes to recover all metals and minerals at states of high purity, with the goal of making recycling as economically viable and environmentally beneficial as possible.

Preventing Type 2 Diabetes Natural Lifestyle Choices to Curb the Disease

ix decades ago, only one American in 100 had diabetes.

Today, it’s almost one in 10, including rising numbers of youth and one in four people older than 65. More than 90 percent of the cases are Type 2, once known as adult-onset diabetes, which is linked to diet, obesity, inactivity, environmental toxins, heredity and other factors. It can wreak havoc throughout the body—attacking blood vessels, eyes, nerves and organs—and make COVID-19 harder to combat.

The good news is that scientists have identified lifestyle strategies that lower the risk and harm of diabetes. “Type 2 diabetes is a condition, not a disease. It exists in a particular environment; when you change the environment, you can change the condition,” says San Francisco-based Nicki Steinberger, Ph.D., author of Wave Goodbye to Type 2 Diabetes. That’s important news for the one in three Americans—about 88 million people—that have prediabetes, 84 percent of whom are not aware of the fact, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

endocrine and digestive systems, which produces insulin to help make and store energy from sugars, as well as enzymes to break down proteins, fats and carbohydrates. While Type 1 diabetes, a genetic autoimmune disease, negates the body’s ability to produce insulin, Type 2 results from an insufficient or improper use of insulin.

Type 2 diabetes can be triggered by metabolic syndrome, a condition marked by high blood pressure, a large waist circumference and high triglycerides. Insulin resistance—the body’s improper use of insulin—can also be a sneaky forerunner to the disease, often manifesting as excessive abdominal fat, fatigue and frequent infections years before hyperglycemia—too much sugar in the blood—becomes evident.

“Diet and lifestyle play a tremendous role,” says Lauren Bongiorno, a virtual diabetes health coach and creator of The Diabetic Health Journal. “Increasing insulin sensitivity is a multi-prong approach, most notably influenced by improving circadian rhythm, reducing stress, eating lower glycemic carbs, reducing animal fats and increasing activity.”

The American Diabetes Association cites excess weight and lack of exercise as significant risk factors in the development of Type 2 diabetes, while recent studies also point to impacts from toxic air, chemicals and mercury exposure. Research published in 2018 in Environmental Science and Pollution Research International reveals a correlation between exposure to phthalates found in plastics and the incidence of new-onset Type 1 diabetes in children, suggesting that the loss of beta cells from phthalate exposure leads to a compromised insulin response.

“Plastics containing BPA can mimic estrogen (xenoestrogens) and can contribute to insulin resistance, insulin over-secretion, beta cell exhaustion and the development and progression of Type 2 diabetes,” says registered dietician and nutritionist Brenda Davis, the Alberta, Canada, author of The Kick Diabetes Cookbook and Kick Diabetes Essentials.

An earlier Indiana University study published in Diabetes Care showed young-adult exposure to mercury can raise the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life by 65 percent.

Davis adds, “Heavy metals, such as mercury and arsenic, have been linked to impaired insulin secretion and decreased insulin sensitivity.” Choosing organic produce and fish that contain lower levels of mercury, such as salmon, shrimp and catfish, is advised.

This type of assault repeated over time increases the risk of fatty liver and compromised cells—conditions linked to a decrease in insulin sensitivity,” says Steinberger.

Research published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism suggests that antibiotic use, especially narrow-spectrum ones, can contribute to diabetes. The side effects of certain medications like statins and other cholesterol-lowering drugs has been debated for decades, and 2019 research published in Diabetes Metabolism Research and Reviews concludes that statins can more than double the risk of Type 2 diabetes, especially for people taking them for two years or longer.

Sleep and Sugar The National Sleep Foundation considers sleep deprivation a significant diabetic risk factor and recommends that people take melatonin as a sleep aid and avoid working night shifts. It cites a study in which healthy adults that were restricted to four hours of sleep for just six nights exhibited a 40 percent reduction in their ability to break down glucose.

Although the role of dietary sugar in diabetes is debated by scientists, evidence shows a strong correlation between Type 2 diabetes and sugar, fructose and high-fructose corn syrup in the diet. A 2015 review of 21 studies published in The British Medical Journal found that regular intake of sugary beverages can lead to diabetic conditions even when obesity is not a factor. Many holistic health advocates identify all sweeteners, including “healthy”

Improving diet choices can be highly rewarding and fun, too. “Not only does eating well not have to be tortuous, it can be enjoyable, inspiring and creative,” says Steinberger. “It helps to keep it simple by using fresh, whole foods with basic herbs and spices.”

Berries, kale and other nutrient-packed greens, nuts, sweet potatoes and beans promote sugar balance and are versatile for delicious, healthy meals.

Aloe vera, bilberry, cinnamon, goldenseal, bitter melon, milk thistle, fenugreek, fennel and gymnema sylvestre, among others, have been found to aid in the utilization and production of insulin. Tulsi, also known as holy basil, is a heavy hitter for reducing blood glucose and buffering the kidneys and liver from the metabolic side effects of high blood sugar. Herbs that support the liver, such as milk thistle, dandelion and artichoke, are other noteworthy plant medicines, especially when blood sugar fluctuates from high to low.

Renata Atkinson, a clinical herbalist in Greenbelt, Maryland, says of blood tests, “Clinical trials have shown that many of these herbs can have a significant effect on the clinical markers for diabetes and prediabetes in fasting blood glucose, postprandial glucose and HbA1C, or glycosylated hemoglobin.” Animal and in vitro studies show that they impact blood sugar by slowing digestion and the absorption of carbohydrates, thereby improving insulin sensitivity, increasing the release of insulin and modulating the metabolism of glucose in the liver. Linking all the vital threads in the complex web of Type 2 diabetes, she adds, “I would say to start with the basics—plant-based foods, exercise, stress management and better sleep. When you have a solid base, your body will be less susceptible to the other factors.”

Why is a deeper understanding of the foundational laws of creation so important now?

What people really need to understand about the laws of attraction and manifestation, which are foundational laws of creation, is that humans have been manifesting the reality they’ve been living in for a very, very long time. Connected by the laws of entanglement, whatever we are giving life to, whatever we are thinking, speaking and breathing out is creating the current that is manifesting the storm we are currently living. We are co-creators of this reality, and it is time to move beyond the kindergarten-level of the law of attraction and take conscious responsibility for what we are actively creating, whether we intend it or not, because we are creating and putting things into motion all the time.

We, as spiritual beings having a human experience, need to begin taking grownup responsibility and move beyond the childlike dependence that colonization has imprinted within us.

Human beings have set in motion all the ideologies and beliefs that are currently governing and manifesting the reality that

post-colonial era. Colonization, like capitalism, reaches what appears to be an end point, and then it turns around and begins cannibalizing itself. For example, we’re seeing colonization of the commons— companies taking control of the majority of the Earth’s drinking and potable water and making a statement that human beings don’t have a right to that water. Water should be part of the commons and available to everyone equally.

Cannibalization by ongoing colonization is also happening to our air through the Paris Agreement. Trading for shares of clean air through a carbon credit program is the greatest smoke-and-mirrors scam of our time. We are in the midst of the “Dance of the Cannibal Giant” with colonization and capitalism as key players.

What is the Dance of the Cannibal Giant?

we step into, moment-by-moment. According to the law of motion, this is going to stay in motion until it meets with an equal or greater force. That force is us. We need to stand in the path of the energy we have created and actively stop its movement. We need to transform the energetic pattern of it and shift it in another direction.

What is colonization?

It’s difficult to talk about colonization in sound bites because it’s a complex subject.

With regard to history, colonization was about taking over lands occupied by an indigenous population. The romanticized myth of colonization, the settling of the Americas, was unsettling. The language surrounding colonization makes it sound as if it was a wonderful thing, when it was actually disruptive, destructive and filled with violence and domination.

Moving into and taking over an already occupied area to gain and maintain control over resources is an act of conquest and domination. We are not living in a

The only way to put the cannibal giant back to sleep is for us to wake up fully to the fact that the Earth is being damaged at a rate far greater than she can heal herself, and that there are many species on the verge of extinction. We are one of them. People must be incredibly discerning now. They must get grounded in their center to listen and heed the direction of their inner compass that will guide them in a right direction.

here’s an emerging movement in the funeral industry, fueled by environmentalism and a yearning to accept mortality and reclaim a connection to Earth and to each other. Although it seems revolutionary, a green burial is as old as humanity, while the conventional burial commonly practiced in the United States is only a bit over 150 years old.

Continuing a practice that began in the Civil War, the conventional funeral typically involves embalming with toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde to preserve the body for viewing. Elaborate metal and varnished hardwood caskets are lowered into cement or steel burial vaults and entombed in memorial parks, where lawns are maintained with heavy machinery and liberal applications of herbicides and pesticides.

These materials are not just polluting the Earth, but depleting resources only to bury them forever. “You can build a replication of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco annually with all the metal placed in the ground. Why would we bury these materials that people could actually be using?” says Elizabeth Fournier, a licensed mortician in Portland, Oregon, and author of The Green Burial Guidebook.

In a true green burial, the body is put in repose in its natural state; refrigeration or dry ice replaces embalming fluids. Families may choose to bathe and dress their loved one’s body, wrap the body with a natural cotton shroud or place it in a casket made of sustainably grown and biodegradable materials including pine, bamboo, wicker or even cardboard.

The burial site has a more natural feel, with indigenous plants, meadows and soil untouched by chemicals. The grave is dug and refilled by hand, while family and friends use ropes to lower their loved one directly into the earth. “You’re going back to nature.

Your body will decompose and in turn it can nourish the environment. New life will come from your death,” says Ed Bixby, owner of Steelmantown Cemetery Companies and president of the Green Burial Council, which certifies eco-friendly cemeteries and funeral services.

Natural burial sites are public recreational havens where people can hike, birdwatch, cross-country ski or camp. These beautiful cemeteries are full of life and regeneration.

“The neat part is that they’re using their income stream for open-space preservation— buying property, using it for burial purposes and dedicating that land so that it will always be open and green,” says Robert Prout, a third-generation funeral director in Verona, New Jersey. Every state has at least one natural burial site. There are hundreds nationwide, and

As people learn more about green burials and request them, traditional cemeteries are setting aside areas for these alternatives.

Bixby is encouraged by the hybrid models. “It’s helping change the direction of the funeral industry. We’re empowering and educating families. That’s how we’re going to grow this movement,” he says.

A green burial will usually cost less than the conventional one.

“The environment is suffering, and people’s wallets are suffering,” says Fournier. “People are realizing that you don’t have to spend a lot of money after someone has passed away to show your love.” In some towns, backyard burials are an option, too.

From an emotional and spiritual perspective, there’s a lot to be said for a green burial. “It’s been so clinical for so long, where you wear your black suit. You sit on the sideline. The gravedigger and undertaker do everything. You’re sort of a spectator,” says Fournier.

“By being a part of the process, there’s a greater sense of acceptance. You can see a lot of the pain and grief wash away,” says Bixby. “It allows us to not only care for our dead, but also not be so afraid of our common denominator. We’re all going to die. It shouldn’t be a scary, disconnected experience.”

A Greener Cremation

lthough cremation is greener than a conventional funeral, it is still not as ecological as a natural burial. The process requires a fair amount of natural gas or oil, and releases toxins into the air, especially if the person is embalmed, has mercury tooth fillings or was treated with chemotherapy. The carbon footprint of cremation can be offset when scattering cremains by mixing them into soil and planting a tree in memory of the person or encasing the ashes in a reef ball to give back to the ocean.

A controversial new type of cremation that is legal in only a handful of states—alkaline hydrolysis—offers an even more ecofriendly option. A low-heat water and lye bath slowly dissolves the flesh and neutralizes toxins, leaving only the bones, which are then processed to create ash-like remains. Time will tell if this method is widely adopted.

Research shows that a gratitude practice fosters patience, encourages self-care and nourishes self-discipline, especially when there is temptation to reach for another slice of pie.

Motivation Through Affirmation Using daily affirmations—simple sentences written or spoken aloud—is a wonderful way to infuse exercise time with positivity.

Leaning into a challenging asana or doing one more lap in the pool with self-affirming intention can snuff out self-criticism. “Moving your body is not a competition. You don’t have to prove yourself or your ability to anyone. Practice feeling grateful for how your body can move, starting with your heartbeat and breath,” says Sofia Angelina Marcus-Myers, an intuitive energy worker and portrait photographer in Portland, Oregon. Healing self-portraiture and dedication to daily affirmations propel MarcusMyers through chronic pain and help her to see the body as a sacred vehicle. “Affirming your body is a practice, and sometimes it will feel awkward, absurd or tedious. Do it

until you feel more comfortable affirming yourself, and then keep doing it.”

Calling a truce with body imperfections can help us feel more comfortable in our skins, something that can go a long way. For Hunt, shifting perspective inward is key. “What if we all stop and imagine being on a desert island? What would your perfect workout, body and life be like if there were no outside influences?”

Pain and Compassion Living with discomfort makes exercising challenging, but learning to respect the body’s rhythms and limitations can be beautifully empowering. “I love the quote, ‘Unless your compassion begins with yourself, it is incomplete,’” says Stern. “Taking a class together (even virtually) gives us a sense of being in this together. When we breathe, stretch and grow together through our practice, it helps us to appreciate where we are on any given day.”

For Loolwa Khazzoom, a Seattle-based author and musician, it’s all about surrender. “Don’t fight your pain; dance with it— literally and figuratively. Dance from your bed. Dance in your head. Dance wherever and however it’s comfortable.” As the founder of Dancing with Pain, a wellness company that teaches a natural approach to pain relief through movement, Khazzoom says, “Our consciousness naturally goes to the places in pain and overlooks the places that feel good. Those places are quite literally our pathways to wellness.”

She recommends focusing on pain-free areas of the body with the joy, power, harmony and other sensations that come from moving to enjoyable music, noting, “As we inhabit those places with our entire beings, there is less and less room for the pain, to the point that it may vanish altogether.”

Marcus-Myers brings the message home with, “It isn’t your body’s purpose to be anyone’s ideal. Your body is an incredible living thing, worthy of love and gratitude.”

Mindful Parenting The Conscious Path to Raising a Child

o Bannerman, a Tucson nutritionist, was making homemade cookies with her toddler. “Or rather, making a mess while stirring cookies,” she recalls. “Something in me snapped. I wanted to take control, kick her out of the kitchen and do everything the ‘right’ way.”

As Bannerman took a deep breath, a memory arose. “As a child, I was only allowed to count scoops of flour or teaspoons of vanilla. I was never allowed to fully, actively participate in the kitchen. Everything had to be perfect, and I was not ‘good enough’ to make it so. I felt this in my core. Was I passing this on to my daughter?” Bannerman recalls that, after taking a moment to reset, she and her daughter “happily made a mess, a memory and a foundation for a brighter future together.”

healthy kids Bannerman, who blogs at NourishingFamilies.org, was practicing an increasingly popular approach in raising children known as either conscious, mindful, soulful, awake or peaceful parenting. Instead of focusing on shaping a child’s behavior through rules and discipline, which can bring up contentious issues of fear, ego and control, the focus is on connecting deeply with a child through love, authenticity and acceptance of the child’s innate nature.

“It’s crucial we realize that we aren’t raising a ‘mini-me’, but a spirit, throbbing with its own signature,” says psychologist Shefali Tsabary, Ph.D., author of The Conscious Parent: Transforming Ourselves, Empowering Our Children. “Children aren’t ours to possess or own in any way. When we know this in the depths of our soul, we tailor their raising to their needs rather than molding them to fit our needs.”

The transformation starts with—and hinges upon—parents understanding themselves deeply and realizing how their upbringing shapes their parenting actions. It’s not always easy, especially during housebound pandemic months. “Our children have the capacity to trigger us more than anyone else. So, when they exhibit childish behavior—which is, of course, part of their job description—it’s often hard for parents to stay calm,” says Laura Markham, Ph.D., a Brooklyn clinical psychologist and author of Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids.

“We see our child’s behavior (He hit her again!), and we draw a conclusion (He’s going to be a psychopath!) which triggers other conclusions (I’ve failed as a mother!).

This cascade of thoughts creates a runaway train of emotions—in this case, fear, dismay, guilt. We can’t bear those feelings.

The best defense is a good offense, so we lash out at our child in anger. The whole process takes all of two seconds, and later we wonder why we overreacted.”

The answer often lies in our past, Markham says. “Any issue that makes you feel like lashing out has roots in your own early years. We know this because we lose our ability to think clearly at those moments, and we start acting like children ourselves, throwing our own tantrums.”

The more deeply we know ourselves—whether through therapy, reading, journaling, meditation, mindfulness practices or simply facing head-on the hard knocks of life—the more open we are to forging a deep relationship with our children and the easier it is to calm ourselves in the moment of a trigger, psychologists say.

Correcting a child becomes then a matter of being a guide or coach, rather than a law enforcer. “Disciplining from a place of presence or awakened consciousness means having the willingness to pause, reflect, course-correct as needed in the moment, apologize, take ownership, ask for help and to drop history and reset as needed,” says Renée Peterson Trudeau, the Brevard, North Carolina, author of Nurturing the Soul of Your Family and The Mother’s Guide to Self-Renewal. “Most of all, practice self-compassion. You will make mistakes. Forgive yourself and move on; this is beautiful modeling for your kids.”

Jessica Speer, a family-book author in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, lives that process. Raised in a home “where anger wasn’t managed well,” she had no tools to draw on when she got triggered by her toddler’s tantrums. It was, she says, “a wake-up call that I needed help.” Diving deeply into books, mindfulness and meditation helped her to understand herself better. “Fast forward 10 years, and I still meditate regularly,” she says. “Now, when my daughter experiences big emotions, I try to ground myself so I can be there by her side. This has been so healing for both of us.”

In harsher weather, skin requires a little extra TLC. Tourles suggests a hydrating winter toner made with a 50/50 mix of aloe vera juice and rosewater. “Honey is also nice for the face and incredibly hydrating for winter,” she says.

“Simply warm a little bit, apply it to your clean face for 20 minutes, then rinse with warm water.”

“People often forget to apply more moisturizer in winter. One of the best things you can do is exfoliate your face with a simple scrub to slough off dry, dead skin. Use gentler ingredients for your face than your body, like oats, baking soda or almonds ground finely,” says Gerber. For chapped lips, she recommends a gentle exfoliant like sugar and honey applied as an antibacterial lip scrub.

“Matcha green tea makes a beautiful mask that astringes and tones skin.

Combine it with aloe gel and honey for some soothing moisture in the colder months when our skin needs rejuvenation,” says Adelmann.

Some products are best purchased from a commercial source. “You can make many preparations at home—from masks to cleansing scrubs, cleansers, lotions and creams—but when these recipes contain water, they have a short shelf life.

If you are looking for something with a longer shelf life, you’re going to run into more complicated instructions incorporating preservatives,” says Adelmann.

“Moisturizers, creamy cleansers and hand creams have the steepest learning curve to craft yourself,” says Tourles.

“Trying to emulsify watery ingredients like herb tea and aloe vera with oils, butters or waxes is like mixing oil and vinegar in a salad dressing; these ingredients want to separate.” According to Gerber, sunscreen is another product worth buying rather than trying to make at home.

Homemade or store-bought products aside, the best skin enhancer is a drink of water, according to Gerber. It doesn’t get easier or more economical than that.

2 Tbsp matcha or another green tea (Camellia sinensis) leaf powder 4 tsp aloe vera leaf gel 1-2 tsp raw honey Combine all ingredients and mix well. Adjust proportions, as needed, to achieve the desired consistency—add more honey and/or tea powder if it’s too fluid, or more aloe if it’s too thick. Apply gently to the face, avoiding the eyes. Leave in place for 20 to 40 minutes.

Rinse the face with warm water and lightly pat it dry with a towel. Follow with moisturizer.

Turmeric Facial Mask This is an anti-inflammatory, astringent and nutritive face mask with antimicrobial action that is well-suited for acne-prone skin.

Combining turmeric with a fat, like yogurt, mitigates its staining effects. Test this recipe on a small area of skin before using.

1 Tbsp plain yogurt 1 tsp turmeric (Curcuma longa) rhizome powder 1 tsp raw honey Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and mix well. After washing the face, apply this mask and let it set for approximately 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water and gently pat dry with a clean towel.

Black Pepper Facial Mask Piperine, a well-studied constituent of black pepper, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions and can benefit acne-prone or mature skin. Mix ground peppercorns with body or facial scrub ingredients for a terrific exfoliant. Black pepper also does wonders for dull skin, encouraging blood to flow to the surface for a healthy radiance. Test this recipe on a small area of the skin before using and consider wearing gloves, as this recipe may discolor fingernails.

Giving Thanks for a Healthy Feast How to Lighten Up Thanksgiving Fare

ue to travel restrictions, tighter budgets and concern for family members that may be older or have underlying health conditions, Thanksgiving might be a smaller affair this year, but that’s no reason to give up on having a scrumptious, celebratory meal. With a little creativity and lots of flavor, our treasured American holiday need not suffer. Giant turkeys may not grace as many tables as usual, so it’s the perfect time to up the side-dish game, embracing healthier options and taking full advantage of an abundant supply of delicious, in-season produce.

To right-size the Thanksgiving spread for carnivores, “Get a Cornish hen or another small bird from a local poultry producer, or consider turkey parts like breasts or thighs, instead of cooking an entire big bird,” advises Steven Satterfield, co-owner and executive chef of the Miller Union restaurant, in Atlanta, and author of Root to Leaf: A Southern Chef Cooks Through the Seasons.

For sides that rate high in both nutrition and taste, the James Beard winner favors in-season veggies like brassicas and Asian greens. “Napa cabbage is great roasted, grilled or prepared raw as a salad. Brussels sprouts shaved on a mandolin and sautéed briefly with shallot and garlic, and dressed with apple cider vinegar and diced apple, is another nice option,” Satterfield says. One of his go-to dishes is a root vegetable salad 36

with shaved celery root, walnuts, apples and dried cranberries with a simple dressing of olive oil and lemon.

Sweet potatoes and pumpkin offer a nutritional edge over white potatoes, giving them top billing at Satterfield’s holiday table. He suggests simplifying the traditional sweet potato casserole by first parboiling, straining, peeling and cutting the potatoes into thick chunks, and then baking with lemon juice, nutmeg and water. “The sweet potatoes will caramelize and form a natural syrup. It has a bright and refreshing flavor without adding the usual butter, marshmallows and sugar,” he explains.

According to Satterfield, many nutritious bitter greens are plentiful this time of year, including chicory, radicchio, frisée and endive. “Last Thanksgiving, I made a chicory salad with dates, pecans, shaved parmesan and persimmon with a sherry vinaigrette with olive oil and shallots. The sweetness of the fruit balances nicely with the bitter greens, which add fiber and help with digestion and the circulatory system.”

Thanksgiving offers a good opportunity to go meatless, according to Kim Campbell, vegan chef and author of The

PlantPure Nation Cookbook. “There is a substitute for every animal product out there, so it’s not hard to make traditional recipes plant-based,” says the Durham, North Carolina, native. Her recipe for a nutty or beanie loaf ramps up the flavor and health profiles by using fresh, rather than dried, herbs such as rosemary, thyme and sage, as well as natural binding agents like lentils, flax seeds or chia seeds mixed with water. “Guests will be amazed that whole foods can be so flavorful and satisfying,” she says. “Go the extra mile with quality ingredients for a special meal like this.”

Campbell encourages people to enjoy the abundance of fresh produce and learn how to cook in season. Fruitbased desserts can be a great way to showcase what’s in season and still keep guests light on their feet. “You don’t have to use crust or a lot of added sugar for something like an apple crisp or cobbler,” she says.

Annemarie Ahearn, founder of the Salt Water Farm cooking school, in Lincolnville, Maine, also suggests a healthful rethinking of traditional Thanksgiving dishes. “Instead of a green bean casserole, consider blanched green beans with almond and cranberry. Dried cranberries can go in a salad, rather than a sauce. You can have the same ingredients and keep the same focal point, but use less cream and dairy,” says the author of Full Moon Suppers at Salt Water Farm: Recipes from Land and Sea. Ahearn, who teaches a class on Thanksgiving cooking, encourages people to take a stroll after the main meal to let food settle before having dessert. She also suggests serving some dishes at room temperature to relieve the pressure of having everything arrive hot at the table. For those unable to be with extended family, Satterfield suggests trading recipes in advance, and then having a virtual Thanksgiving by sharing a visual image of how the meal turned out. “You can even send leftovers if you’re in the same vicinity,” he says.

Skin-Soothing Herbs for Dogs and Cats Simple Ways to Reduce Itching

rom allergies to liver deficiency, many factors can itch, inflame and irritate the skin of our pets. A dog’s or cat’s skin can become damaged or compromised because the skin is the first line of defense against attacks from external substances. Skin problems in pets have many causes, yet a variety of herbs can help a dog or cat feel more comfortable.

While the catalysts of acute-onset skin issues such as insect bites or sunburn are obvious and can be dealt with directly, most forms of skin and coat disease are caused by deeper issues that can be extremely difficult to identify and address. Chronic or recurring skin conditions that cannot be attributed to influences outside the body usually point to deeper health issues, some of which can be serious or even life-threatening.

The greatest mistake one can make when assessing a skin problem is assuming the problem is only skin deep. And while topical salves, liniments, shampoos or lotions can be quite effective in temporarily suppressing itching and pain, they will not likely address the root causes of a dog’s or cat’s skin ailment. For that, the situation must be approached from the inside-out with diet and several key herbs.

Many cases of chronic skin issues in dogs and cats are either directly attributable to or strongly influenced by inappropriate and allergy-inducing ingredients in pet foods. Be critical about the quality of pet foods and avoid those that contain meat byproducts, artificial flavors and preservatives, as well as all grains, especially wheat and corn.

It’s also important to give a good fish or krill oil supplement to dogs and cats.

The omega-3 fatty acids in these marine lipids play critical roles in regulating immune system inflammatory response to allergens. More specifically, they inhibit inflammation, while omega-6 fatty acids typically found in grains and vegetable oils stimulate inflammation. Both processes are necessary for healthy body functioning, but an imbalance of too much omega-6 sets the stage for skin allergies, a dull coat and excessive shedding.

Liver deficiency is another common factor to consider. The liver is responsible for producing digestive enzymes and acids needed to break down and assimilate food while also filtering waste from the bloodstream. If the liver is deficient in any of these functions, excess waste that cannot be eliminated via normal pathways will wreak havoc on the body, often manifesting as a skin condition. If this happens, symptoms commonly recognized as pyoderma, eczema or psoriasis will increase as the body tries to eliminate the waste, pushing the toxins outward and away from vital internal organs toward the skin.

In addition to dietary adjustments, liver support is helpful when it comes to skin problems, and this is where herbs come in.

Burdock root (Arctium lappa). This herb has an ancient history as a skin remedy. It contains inulin, an indigestible polysaccharide constituent that serves as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial microflora in the gut and improving digestion. It also contains a broad variety of compounds that gently stimulate the liver at various levels to help detoxify the body and aid in

transporting waste out of the bloodstream. Burdock can be found as a tincture or a fresh root at many health food stores. Grate the fresh root liberally onto the pet’s food at each mealtime. Burdock is fairly neutral in flavor and very safe, so there’s no need to worry about overfeeding.

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). The roots and leaves are highly nutritious.

They contain a complex assortment of liver-supporting compounds as well as diuretic properties that aid the body in eliminating toxins via urination.

Red clover (Trifolium pretense), alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and milk thistle (Silybum marianum). These are well-known blood cleansers worth con-sidering. Look for for-mulas that contain a balanced array of all three.
