NASSAU BAY BUILDING OFFICIAL MARK STELLY TO RETIRE After serving the citizens of Nassau Bay for eight years, Building Official Mark Stelly will retire in June 2022. The Building Official oversees the Building Department for the City, reviewing plans and inspections; working with local contractors, homeowners, architects and engineers; scheduling maintenance of City Hall, and maintaining a presence in the community. With his departure, the role of Building Official will be taken over by Cris Roth, who began working alongside Stelly on January 31. “What I’ve enjoyed most about this position is working with contractors and residents, sharing the knowledge I’ve gained over the years and helping people realize their dreams,” Stelly said. Long-term experience

Stelly began his 23-year career in municipal government in October 1999, when he was hired by Mary Chambers, former Assistant City Manager for Nassau Bay, as Baytown’s Housing Rehabilitation Specialist. He advanced to Deputy Building Official in Baytown in less than a year. In 2008, Stelly and Chambers crossed paths for a second time, when she hired him as the Building Official in League City. They got the chance to work together again in Nassau Bay.

“When Mary hired me as the Building Official in Nassau Bay in 2014, the running joke was that I was just following her around,” Stelly said. “We have maintained a fantastic working relationship over the years.”

Impact in Nassau Bay

Stelly said his tenure with Nassau Bay was marked with significant advancements within the community.

“I’m grateful to have contributed to the completion of the sixstory medical office building for Houston Methodist, and also to have been a part of the home elevation grant projects,” he said. “It will also be incredible to see the impact the Moody Neurorehabilitation Institute will have on the community.” With valued assistance from his staff as well as the Public Works Department, Stelly has also successfully maintained the City’s Class 7 rating in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS).

“To maintain our Class 7 rating, the City conducts outreach efforts to encourage our citizens to purchase and maintain their flood insurance, furnishes inquirers with basic flood zone information from the community’s latest Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM), and offers one-on-one advice regarding property protection,” Stelly said. “By maintaining our Class 7 rating, the City of Nassau Bay is performing as well as or better than our neighbors in terms of floodplain management, qualifying our residents for a 15 percent discount on flood insurance premiums.” Tana Welch, Building Department Coordinator, said her time working with Stelly has been very positive.

“I am proud to have worked under Mark’s guidance and leadership for the past year,” she said. “Not only is he an amazing boss, but he has shown himself to be a loving and caring person.” Retirement plans

While he admits he never saw himself retiring, Stelly has a few goals in mind now that he’ll have more time on his hands.

“I like building things, and I have a portable sawmill coming any day now,” he said. “I’ll be able to make furniture including chairs and tables, and what will start as a hobby might turn into something more. I’m also looking forward to having more time to go elk hunting.”

A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR-ELECT PHIL JOHNSON I am deeply honored to serve as the next Mayor of Nassau Bay and very much appreciate the confidence you have bestowed on me. We had a great election with more candidates and more voter participation than ever before and Nassau Bay is better off thanks to each and everyone who participated. We have new faces on Council and what also looks to be our first City Council with a majority being Councilwomen representing us in office.

My primary priority will be to focus our efforts and tax dollars on key areas of infrastructure improvement so we can reinvest back into our community while preserving the unique character of our city from Houston urbanization. We have more young families moving into our city than ever before and we have to reinvest to prepare for our next generation. This means fixing or replacing many old and aged systems for our utilities, streets, and flood control, and providing funds for our emergency responders. We have much work to do. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns. Thank you for your support, Phil Johnson

BEAT THE HEAT

Whether you are playing or working outside this summer, you should take the following precautions to stay safe in the heat: Cover Up: Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, a wide-brim hat, and sunglasses.

Limit Direct Exposure: UV rays are most intense between 10am-4pm. Limit time outdoors during these hours.

Use Sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher): Put on sunscreen before you go outside, even on cloudy days, and reapply every two hours if you are active and sweating or swimming. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water regardless of your activity level - don't wait until you're thirsty. Stay away from beverages that contain caffeine, alcohol, or lots of sugar.

NEVER Leave Children or Pets in a Closed Car: In just a few minutes, temperatures can rise high enough to hurt or kill your loved ones. Know the Signs & Symptoms of Heat Disorders: Heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, sunburn, and heat rash are common conditions that you should be able to recognize.
