MEET YOUR NEW COMMISSIONER JOIN US FOR BEAUTIFICATION DAY

Born and raised in the Northside, Precinct 2 has always been home to Commissioner Adrian Garcia. His 35-year career in public service began as a Houston Police Officer. In 1994, he was appointed by Mayor Lee Brown as Director of the Mayor’s AntiGang Office, and in 2003, was elected to Houston City Council. During his tenure, he served as Chair on two City Council committees — the Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee and the Minority / Women Business Enterprise Committee. With the support of his peers, Mayor Bill White confirmed him as Mayor Pro-Tem. In 2008, Commissioner Garcia continued his service by being elected as the Harris County Sheriff — the largest sheriff's office in Texas and the 3rd largest in the United States. On November 6th, 2018, he was elected Harris County Commissioner for Precinct 2, which serves more than 1.1 million people. In support of Nassau Bay, Commissioner Garcia and the Harris County Commissioners' Court recently approved the City's partnership project with the Harris County Flood Control District to reduce flood risks in the Clear Creek Watershed. The City of Nassau Bay will receive partial funding for the project to update the storm water pump systems along Upper Bay Road in an effort to minimize flooding during heavy rain events. Commissioner Garcia is committed to working every day to make Precinct 2 and all of Harris County a place where everyone who wants a job can get a job, where everyone can afford to rent or own a home, and where our kids and seniors can walk to church, park or school without fear of crime. The City of Nassau Bay looks forward to working with you Commissioner Garcia!

Saturday, March 30th at 8:00am Azaleas are starting to pop out in Nassau Bay yards. This can only mean one thing... time for Nassau Bay's annual Beautification Day! Beautification Day is an opportunity for all citizens to help make our City shine! The relatively mild, rainy winter has been kind to most plants, so basic trimming around the City is what is really needed. Encourage your neighbors, bring a friend (non-residents are always welcome!), or make it a special day with your grandkids by coming to Beautification Day. No need to register, just come on out! Join us on Saturday, March 30th at 8:00am at the David Braun Park Pavilion (18900 Upper Bay Rd). Coffee and a light breakfast will be served. Please bring any of the following items if possible – garden gloves, trowels, shovel, pruners, or lopers. This volunteer event is also a great way to meet your Nassau Bay neighbors and support the City!

SPRING FORWARD MARCH 10TH

The Nassau Bay Fire Marshal's Office and the Volunteer Fire Department want to remind you to check and change the batteries in your smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarms when you reset your clocks one hour forward on March 10th. It is recommended to replace the batteries at least twice a year, so doing this at the start and end of Daylight Savings Time is a good homeowner habit!

NASSAU BAY GARDEN CLUB

March… Spring has been teasing us ever since. Groundhog day predictions means Nassau Bay is in for an early spring. Now is the time for all gardeners to prepare their plants for spring! March To Do List: Roses: Prune no later than the middle of March so that pruning is complete before the last frost. Trim away any criss-cross stems and dead wood (brown all the way through). Remove all remaining leaves as pests or disease may be on them. Be sure to pick up and discard all trimmings. Prune roses by cutting 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch above an outward facing bud eye (small bump where leaf would meet the stem). Cut at a 45° angle. Prune to the height desired for the bush. Climbing Roses: The energy of a climbing rose is spent on regrowing first and flowering second. This kind of rose has two types of canes (branches), main and lateral. The canes coming directly from the base should never be pruned. Therefore, if energy is spent on regrowth of the main canes, it will not flower. Lateral canes (other than the main canes) can be pruned anytime of the year after blooming. Knock Out Roses: These roses can be found in many esplanades and public planters. Knock out roses usually need pruning in their second or third season, or after they grow to a mature height of 3 to 4 feet. Prune them the same time of year as other roses. They bloom on new growth and can be cut back to about 1/3 of their height. Knock out roses grow in phases (bloom-rest-bloom), so if a mid-season trim is needed, do so immediately after blooming. Crêpe Myrtle: Crêpe myrtles need to be cut now as it is leafless and you can see all the branches. It blooms on new growth. Happy Gardening! March 12, 2019 Garden Club General Meeting Social 9:30am ● Program 10:00am ● Meeting to Follow Master Gardener Julie Cartmill will share all what is needed to know about trees. She will be talking about moss ball, Spanish moss, and “crêpe murder.” She will also share many ideas on replacing a lost tree. Pruning tips will also be given, so please come and join us for this very timely informational program! This program is open to all, so please come join us for some coffee, great morning snacks, and an opportunity to meet your fellow Nassau Bay gardeners!

NASSAU BAY CODE ENFORCEMENT Code Enforcement is integral to the City’s daily operations, and essential to enhancing quality of life by helping to sustain safe, healthy living conditions for residents and businesses in Nassau Bay. A commonality among all municipalities is that they have buildings, homes, and properties that will age over time. In addition, communities struggle with vacant buildings, trash, tall grass and weeds, graffiti, and inoperable vehicles. Nassau Bay is no exception and our code enforcement officers manage these issues in a responsible and effective way. Nassau Bay's code enforcement team supports and enhances property values through effective enforcement of property standards, while working to keep aging buildings, homes, and properties from deteriorating and becoming “eyesores” to our City. Communities with deteriorating properties may see an increase in crime rates and a decrease in property values. Ill-cared for residences and businesses contribute to poor community conditions. These conditions are not welcomed, and fighting blight is a top priority for Nassau Bay. On Nassau Bay's website, residents can find a new map highlighting the most egregious properties, both commercial and residential. Residents will be able to see the code violations for each property listed, the action being taken, and the expected time period for remediation. This map is not intended to be a comprehensive list of code enforcement issues. For more information on the code enforcement tracking map, visit the City's website at www.nassaubay.com/CodeMap.

LEADERSHIP CLEARLAKE VISITS THE CAPITOL

City Secretary Sandra Ham and Field Operator II Robert Villanueva visited the Texas State Capitol on February 12th and February 13th as part of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce's third biennial class of Leadership Clear Lake. The Leadership Clear Lake Program is designed to educate and equip the future leaders of our region by providing them with the skills they will need to excel. Over the course of the trip, Sandra and Robert had the great opportunity to learn from Texas Railroad Commissioner Ryan Sitton and Texas General Land Office Commissioner George P. Bush. A special highlight included a private reception with Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Attendees also engaged with several of the area's local representatives, including Representative Dr. Greg Bonnen, District 24, Senator Larry Taylor, District 11, and Representative Dennis Paul, District 129. The final day included special introductions in the House and Senate Galleries.
