Beautification Day – What an absolutely amazing group of citizens in our City! Beautification Day, held on March 30th, was a great success, not only because the City was “spruced up,” but also because of the great citizen participation! Sixty-seven (67) residents came out to ready to garden – some came with friends and others came out because they are Nassau Bay proud. The Garden Club wants to extend a HUGE thank you to the local eateries who supported their community gardening efforts: Chick-fil-A, Morning Kolaches, and Shipley’s Donuts! Please be sure to tell these establishments how much you appreciate their community spirit and yummy contributions. Finally, Beautification Day takes a lot of pre-planning between the City, Garden Club and Public Works. Thank you Director Paul Lopez and his crew of Raul Lozoya, Matt Owen, Jose Rosales-Patron, Kevin Meade, and Kathy George. Public Works is amazing every day, but these crew members went above and beyond to make this Saturday run smoothly! Now for a few gardening tidbits – 1. Mulch: How to choose the right mulch? Is there a difference? Hardwood mulch is the best because it comes from hardwood trees. Colored mulch (red, brown & black) may be wood from discarded wood pallets. A little internet research can help you to make an informed decision 2. Injured Creatures: How can you help? Call the Wildlife Center of Texas at 713.861.9453 (WILD) or visit their website at www.WildlifeCenterofTexas.org. This organization will take almost any kind of creature and try to nurse it back to health. 3. Personal Garden Questions: Need a helping hand? Send an email to info@nassaubaygc.org to ask a garden question. Gardeners can ask anything, including everyday questions like "is this a weed or a plant?" Master gardeners are happy to help answer any questions. Remember, at some point all Garden Club gardeners started out with the same kind of questions. There will not be a May Garden Club Meeting. The Garden Club will kick off its new season on September 9th.
