Making Healthy Men

ONLINE EXCLUSIVES

I like that our June issue focuses on men’s health—and rightly so, since Father’s Day is on Sunday the 20th.

In our house it feels like men’s health is a constant theme. Since I’m outnumbered by my guys, I am always making sure all three are eating well and exercising more.

For our teenagers it should be simple, right? Well, not necessarily so. Many teenage boys feel like they should be able to eat whatever they want, in any amount. But if genetics play a role, fighting the battle of the bulge at an early age is more common than not. Our oldest can eat literally anything, but that doesn’t mean I support that thinking. As we know, too much of any one thing can set you up for problems later in life. We’re lucky that he’s an athlete; rarely a day goes by without him exercising. But I’ve been pretty strict when it comes to sweets—a little is OK, but a lot is not. Our youngest has a propensity to gain weight more quickly, but not from eating poorly. For him it’s lack of consistent exercise. He’s a tennis player, and during his high school season he’s playing six times a week. You would think that’s plenty of exercise, yet his genetic makeup means he needs various types of physical activity to keep the weight off. He eats far less than our older son and is allowed only one sweet per day. I’d like to think I’m helping them live longer, healthier lives by instilling good habits, so when I’m long gone they’ll stop and think, What would Mom say? To all our male readers: Whether it’s on your own or with a boost from a female who cares, may you live life to the fullest!

Neapolitan Express Pioneered Eco-Friendly Food Trucks

With the American Rescue Plan, which passed in March, Congress set aside $28.6 billion in federal grants for restaurants, including food trucks—one of the industries hardest hit by New York City’s Covid lockdowns. As the city opens up and these funds are disbursed, food truck owners have an opportunity to “build back better” with a clean-energy business model. The prototype has become the gold standard. Neapolitan Express, the world’s first food truck powered entirely by compressed natural gas, was introduced to New York

Queens-Based ‘PeaceMobile’ Helps Reduce Gun Violence

Last year’s c o n v e r gence of Covid-19 and the growing social justice movement caused cities across the United States to rethink their approach to crime control and law enforcement, with a focus on preventive programs to break the cycle of violence. But Erica Ford, founder of LIFE (Love Ignites Freedom through Education) Camp, based in South Jamaica, Queens, was way ahead of them. She’s been doing this work for 30 years. At-risk inner-city youth, ages 13 to 24, can attend LIFE

in City Hall Park in 2013, to great fanfare. Founder Max Crespo was flanked by then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the late business magnate T. Boone Pickens, who sat on the board of the food truck’s partner in the business venture, Clean Energy Fuels. Specializing in authentic Italian cuisine, Neapolitan Express now has a fleet of more than 30 food trucks. According to the company, its alternative-energy model reduces greenhouse gases by 99 percent—”equivalent to taking 240 cars off the road”—and is safer for employees and customers. The truck’s unique method of baking pizzas, in a 900-degree oven over 90 seconds, also means that it truly delivers fast food. In fact the company’s motto is “Fast food should be good food.” The ingredients it uses are all natural, organic and GMO-free, and include flour and tomatoes sourced from Italy. Add-ons include Mike’s Hot Honey, Vegan Daiya Cheese and Urbani Black Truffle Oil. For more information, visit NeapolitanExpress.com. Camp to learn alternatives to violence, bullying and other forms of antisocial behavior. The goal is to help them stay in school and out of the criminal justice system. Their families can also benefit from the program through educational, employment and social opportunities. But LIFE Camp doesn’t wait for young people to come to them; they go out into the communities in their bright-orange, 35-foot-long PeaceMobile to spread the message that “peace is a lifestyle.” Underlying these initiatives is Ford’s philosophy that violence is a public health crisis. By treating it as such, LIFE Camp is helping to transform entire communities. It’s one of more than 60 anti-violence community groups comprising New York City’s Crisis Management System, which helped reduce shootings by 40 percent between 2010 and 2019 in NYC’s most violent neighborhoods. This is not a job, this is my life,” Ford has said. “My undying love keeps me committed to my people until my glory day takes me away.” For more information, visit PeaceIsALifestyle.com.

The Healthy Alternatives to Root Canal by Dr. Lewis Gross

When a tooth is dying, a common method of treating the pain is with a root canal. However, this is not always the best choice of treatment. There are alternatives to a root canal that are safer for the patients’ oral and systemic health. These options are often less expensive too. If the tooth senses cold, then it’s still vital—it can be saved with an herbal filling. If the tooth senses hot pain, then the nerve inflammation is less reversible, but it’s still possible. If the root canal was already done, get a 3-D cone beam CBCT x-ray to determine if the tooth is still diseased. Chronic infections don’t always show up on a traditional 2-D x-ray, and they may not hurt until it’s too late. A common scenario that can lead to root canal is that the dentist diagnoses that a previous filling or new decay is close to a nerve, or there’s pain under a crown. Traditional dentists then remove the inner pulp—the nerves and blood vessels that are the tooth’s vital organs. This may temporarily stop the pain, but it kills the tooth. The dead tissue decomposes, and the resulting pus and gas have no place to escape. An alternative approach is to clean the cavity with ozone and place an herbal filling, which calms the nerve and allows it to regenerate. If the pain is under a crown, the dentist can also try redoing it, as it may not fit correctly.

Root Canal Dangers Doing a root canal on an already-infected tooth entombs bacteria in the bone. These microbes, which are anaerobic (they don’t need air), are some of the most dangerous microorganisms. They have been associated with many systemic illnesses and act as a harbor for Lyme disease spirochetes. A tooth has thousands of micro-tubules where they can survive even after a root canal. Your body is in a constant state of battle with these infections, which you can never win, and which may lead to pockets of dead bone. Imagine a watering can with a slow leak: That’s what happens to your immune system. Infected teeth should be extracted with ozone and PRF stem cells. Metal-free implants or Valplast partials are excellent replacements. A good holistic oral surgeon will have experience with these treatments. It’s always better to preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible. Dr. Lewis Gross is director of Holistic Dentists, located at 17 Park Place, in Tribeca. Long Island Dentist Offers IV-C Therapy Golden Dental Wellness recommends complementing dental care with vitamin C infusion

Orange juice has long been used as a homeopathic cocktail to boost the immune system and fight illness. Intravenous vitamin C, which delivers 120 times the amount of vitamin C found in a glass of juice, has been studied extensively and has been found to have a wide range of positive effects on the immune system, especially in individuals undergoing dental and medical procedures, says Dr. Linda Golden, who recommends IV-C therapy. “In order to increase absorption rates far beyond what could be achieved with oral supplementation, we can deliver a dose from 10g up to 60g of vitamin C directly into your body, both during a dental procedure, to decrease bodily fatigue, and during the weeks afterward, to decrease recovery time,” she says. “Post-procedure IV-C is also recommended and can be completed in less than an hour, making it easy to fit in around a busy schedule.” Golden recommends practitioners who can provide post-procedure IV-C in her patients’ area. She can also prearrange to provide the therapy in her office during a dental treatment if indicated.

‘Astounding Results’ IV-C has been clinically tested repeatedly and has yielded some “astounding results,” Golden says, from helping repair the immune system during dental treatment to minimizing pain during and after dental procedures. For patients having old mercury restorations removed, an IV-C can help loosen residual mercury from the bonding site and act as a heavy metal detoxification agent during and after mercury removal, she says. She also recommends IV-C before, during and after ceramic implant placement. “We’re proud to be a mercury-free and metal-free office and to provide ceramic implants as an alternative to titanium,” she says. According to a study published in the American Journal of Dentistry, an IV-C can speed recovery from dry socket after a tooth extraction or even prevent that painful condition if treatment is administered during the extraction. IV-C also helps reduce pain, gum sensitivity and inflammation during and after dental procedures, Golden says.

“Studies have shown that an IV-C can decrease chronic or acute inflammation almost completely,” she says. “In fact, after two rounds of treatment, many patients had no inflammatory cells at all and healthier gums overall. This improvement can decrease or eliminate bleeding during procedures, as well as redness and swelling.” While there have been very few reported side effects of IV-Cs, patients with diabetes should report that condition to their dentist before receiving the therapy, as it can generate false positives on blood glucose tests, Golden says. Golden Dental Wellness Center will again offer IV-C as an option before, during and after various procedures on a prearranged basis as soon as possible. Location: 444 Community Dr., Manhasset, NY. Healthy Gums Could Help Prevent High Blood Pressure

Periodontal disease, or chronic inflammation of the gums, is linked to a long list of whole-body health problems. With the March release of a study conducted by researchers at the University College London Eastman Dental Institute and reported in the journal Hypertension, we can add high blood pressure to that list. Dr. Francesco D’Aiuto, lead author of the study, says the new research indicates that there’s an association between severe gum disease and high systolic blood pressure. His team studied two groups of 250 adults with a median age

of 35. One group, which was healthy, had a 7 percent rate of high blood pressure; the other group, which was healthy except for severe gum disease, had a rate of 14 percent. “[Our] evidence indicates that periodontal bacteria cause damage to the gums and also triggers inflammatory responses that can impact the development of systemic diseases including” high blood pressure, D’Aiuto said in a news release from Hypertension. “While only an association and not a cause-and-effect link was established,” the report continues, “the findings suggest that about 50% of adults could have undetected high blood pressure due to gum disease—a tissue infection that can also lead to inflammation and bone or tooth loss. “Researchers said preventing and treating gum disease may be a cost-effective way to reduce systemic inflammation and improve function of the endothelium, the thin lining inside the heart and blood vessels.” Information sourced by Jonathan Richter, DDS, FAGD, owner of Cariodontal, located at 310 E. Shore Rd., Ste. 101, Great Neck, NY (516-282-0310 / Cariodontal.com), and Manhattan Oasis Dentistry, 525 West End Ave., Ste. 1G, New York, NY (212-8742880 / ManhattanOasisDentistry. Enhancing Cellular Oscillation with PolarAid

The science behind PolarAid was first demonstrated by Dr. Georges Lakhovsky and Nikola Tesla, an electrical and mechanical engineer, inventor and futurist who is best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current electricity supply system. Lakhovsky, a Russian inventor of the multiple electrode radio lamp and the multiwave oscillator, authored The Secret of Life: Electricity, Radiation and Your Body, where he explained that cells are small oscillatory circuits emitting ultra-short electromagnetic waves similar to waves radiated by stars. He demonstrated that health was determined by the relative strength of these cellular oscillations, and bacteria, cancers, and other pathogens corrupted them, causing interference with the oscillations. Tesla identified the existence of the energy that has continued to spring from the cosmos since the creation of the universe. This powerful scalar energy supporting all vegetable, animal and human life has been referenced in cultures across the globe for thousands of years. Tesla found that scalar frequencies nourish our body just as food and water do, but as we experience life’s challenges and traumas, or as we age, the cells of the body lose the capability to absorb these vital energies. A medical doctor practicing today in Serbia, Dr. Dino Tomic and his team was able to procure the original schematics of the two scientists and their inventions. Tomic adapted Lakhovsky and Tesla’s groundbreaking science to perfect the PolarAid antenna, a specially designed, copper-based alloy ring with a proprietary design. By reconstructing the devices and using them in a clinical setting, Tomic observed

their effects and determined that the most efficient device was a polarization coil, which he used as the foundation for developing the polarization disc called PolarAid. It works like a satellite antenna, receiving and amplifying natural energy from the atmosphere. When applied to the body, the PolarAid disc redirects the energy to replenish the body’s energy flow, enhancing its capacities to heal naturally. Scientific evidence that the human body runs on electrical energy has been recognized for decades. In modern medicine diagnostic methods such as the ECG, EEG, EMG and magnetic resonance imaging are based on the measuring of electromagnetic parameters and used to assess the overall level of physical health or functioning of certain organs. PolarAid is best used in conjunction with a healthy diet, supplements, exercise and common-sense habits. For more information, call 450-4867888 or visit PolarAidHealth.com. See ad, page 30.

Weighted blankets that provide a cozy, swaddled feeling have been big sellers during the trying days of the pandemic, and a new study verifies that they do provide mental health benefits. Researchers from Sweden’s Karolinska University tested 120 patients with depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder for four weeks. They found that a weighted blanked led to better sleep and reduced fatigue, depression and anxiety, and increased levels of daytime activity. Weighted blankets are comforters with tiny pellets or metal chains woven throughout so that weight is distributed across the body; researchers recommend using a blanket that is about 10 percent of a person’s body weight.

Research from the University of Queensland, in Australia, has found that peptic ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome, along with other gut disorders, are linked to depression. The researchers analyzed health data from more than 450,000 people and found eight genetic variants that predispose people to peptic ulcers and other gut diseases, often with depression as a comorbidity. Lead author Yeda Wu says the research supports a holistic approach to identifying and caring for patients with gastrointestinal diseases, noting, “As a medical student, I noticed how some patients’ gastrointestinal symptoms improved after psychotherapy or psychiatry treatment.”

Eat Five Veggies and Fruits Daily to Live Longer

Cultivate Satisfaction to be Healthier and Happier

People that struggle to eat the often-recommended nine servings of fruit and vegetables each day can relax: The latest research from Harvard, based on 26 studies of 2 million people from 29 countries, found that two and three daily servings of fruit and vegetables, respectively, were linked to the most longevity. Compared to only two servings of produce per day, five servings lowered the risk of death overall by 13 percent, cardiovascular disease by 12 percent, cancer by 10 percent and respiratory disease by 35 percent. Green, leafy vegetables, including spinach, lettuce and kale, and fruit and vegetables rich in beta carotene and vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, berries and carrots, showed benefits.Starchy vegetables, like peas and corn, fruit juices and potatoes, did not appear to reduce the risk of death.

Older people with high levels of life satisfaction—a favorable attitude toward life—have healthier habits, less depression and pain, better sleep and a longer life, reports researchers from the University of British Columbia. They studied nearly 13,000 U.S. adults older than 50 for four years and found that higher life satisfaction was linked to 26 percent reduced mortality and a 46 percent lower depression rate. People that felt good about their lives had fewer chronic conditions and pain, exercised more often, were both more optimistic and likely to be living with a partner and experienced less hopelessness and loneliness. However, such positive feelings were not associated with fewer health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis or obesity; were not marked by less alcoholic binging or smoking; and were not affected by frequency of contact with children, family and friends.

Why I Have Candida Symptoms Although All My Tests are Normal

airborneAdobeStock.com

by Michael Biamonte, CCN

This is a very common complaint that we hear from new patients coming to us. “I have all the symptoms of Candida and my doctor did all these tests, and yet he said everything was normal!” Well, the first question would be, “Did your doctor even test you for Candida?” Most mainstream doctors don’t know anything about testing for Candida. When the average person goes to their doctor and tells them all their complaints, symptoms and says, “I must have Candida”, the doctor will do standard blood and urine tests and never explore Candida testing. Testing for Candida is very precise and specific. Candida testing is not included in standard blood and urine tests; they must be special ordered, which requires the doctor to have some preexisting knowledge of Candida. Also it is totally normal and expected that standard lab work will look normal in the case of the Candida patient. The disruption that Candida causes in the body rarely will show in standard blood and urine tests. If someone was to do a test for Candida and it showed negative, it could easily be because Candida is an organism that can hide and be dormant. Its metabolic rate changes depending on whether it’s being fed or not, therefore its activity changes as its rate of growth changes. The best way to detect Candida is by a provoked or challenged test.

Provoked or challenging testing is typically done when testing for toxic metals or any substance which can hide in the body. This type of test is accomplished by taking a substance (my phase 0 program is a good example of what could be used) which has the ability to disturb or dislodge the Candida and other organism from the gut lining. This will cause a release of antigens and other chemicals from the Candida cells that then can be detected. In my method, we measure these chemicals in the urine, as urine is the most accurate sample one can use. Doing a provoked test dramatically increases the chances of finding the exact level of Candida overgrowth that one has, it greatly reduces the chances on having the Candida overgrowth going undetected. So when the doctor tells you all your tests are normal, ask, “Did you actually test for Candida, and if sok what type of test did you use?” If he says no, ask, “Why not?” If he did test you for Candida and didn’t use something to provoke or challenge, you’re best calling our office to get the right testing done! Michael Biamonte, CCN, is a certified clinical nutritionist and the founder of the Biamonte Center for Clinical Nutrition. He uses BioCybernetics “Blood Detective” software that can determine exactly where the body is imbalanced— vitamins, minerals, hormones or absorption problems—and which systems in the body are a priority to address. Calendar Conundrum

Summer Season Projected to Last Longer

john smith/AdobeStock.com

A new study by scientists at the State Key Laboratory of Tropical Oceanography, in China, and published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, predicts that if emissions of greenhouse gases go unchecked, summers in the Northern Hemisphere could last nearly six months by 2100. The impacts will be felt on human health, agriculture and ecology, such as the timing of animal feeding, breeding and migration, as well as promoting more heat waves, droughts and wildfires. The research analyzed six decades of historical daily climate records and employed climate models to project future trends. Summer was defined as the onset of temperatures in the hottest 25 percent of the year and winter as temperatures in the coldest 25 percent. The number of summer days in the Northern Hemisphere increased from 78 to 95 between 1952 and 2011.

Wild Birds Trained to Pick Up Litter

Crows, capable of complex thought and skilled problem solvers, can also make and use tools. Now, several projects aim to enlist crows and other wild creatures as volunteers to keep the environment tidy. A Dutch company, Crowded Cities, has a device called the CrowBar (Tinyurl.com/Crow BarInvention) that trains birds to collect discarded cigarette butts in exchange for food, creating a low-cost solution to a problem that is laborintensive for humans. The machine presents a piece of food next to a cigarette butt on a platform, training the crow to expect food there. Then it starts dispensing the food only after the crow arrives, teaching the crow how the machine operates. Next, it presents only the cigarette butt, with no food. The crow starts looking around for the food and accidentally knocks the butt in, which releases a treat. The last step is to scatter a few cigarette butts on the ground around the CrowBar. When the training is complete, the crow will start collecting butts from the surrounding area and bringing them to the machine for a reward.

INTEGRATIVE HEALTH FOR MEN Natural Approaches for Robust Vitality by Ronica O’Hara

S

tatistically speaking, living long and well is an uphill battle for most American men. Compared to women, they eat worse, smoke more, drink harder, exercise less and suffer more injuries. They live on average five fewer years than women. At birth, they outnumber women 105 to 100, but by age 60, it’s flipped to 95 to 100. Of the 15 leading causes of death, the only one men don’t lead in is Alzheimer’s, because many of them don’t live long enough to develop it. Men are markedly slow to consult doctors. Seventy-two percent would rather do household chores like cleaning toilets, one survey found, and 37 percent admitted that they withheld information from doctors to avoid hearing a bad diagnosis. When more serious symptoms arise like chest pain or painful urination, they can turn to medical specialists and the latest technology to get heart stents inserted, kidneys flushed out and pain lowered with pharmaceuticals. By then, however, disease can be advanced and the prognosis dimmer. But that “macho man” approach is ebbing as men—especially millennials—increasingly adopt proactive integrative strategies to take control of their health. “As traditional gender roles continue to fade with the times, there will be less of a stigma around men’s health care and we’ll start to see more and more men placing greater importance on their health,” says integrative internist Myles Spar, M.D., co-author of Integrative Men’s Health and chief medical officer of Vault, a men’s health care organization. By dealing head-on with not just a condition’s symptoms, but also with its physical, mental and emotional roots, men can become better equipped to enjoy long years of robust health.

HEART DISEASE The leading cause of death for men in the U.S., heart disease kills one in four men. Half of those that died suddenly exhibited no previous symptoms. Men develop heart disease 10 years younger than women on average, possibly because estrogen has a protective effect on coronary arteries. Stress, especially in economically beleaguered occupations and areas, takes a toll, as evidenced by rising drug abuse among men nationwide. “Overall, it appears that men’s coping with stressful events may be less adaptive physiologically, behaviorally and emotionally, contributing to their increased risk for coronary heart disease,” concludes a State University of New York at Stonybrook study. SYMPTOMS: chest pain, irregular heartbeat, dizziness, shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, sensations in arms and legs such as pain, swelling, weakness or tingling. NEW RESEARCH: Active, 40-ish men that were able to do 40 pushups had a 96 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease in the next 10 years than men doing less than 10 pushups, a Harvard study concludes. A 10-year study of 134,297 people from 21 countries found that eating six ounces or more each week of processed meat like bacon, sausages and salami was linked to a 46 percent higher risk of cardiovascular disease and a 51 percent higher risk of death. INTEGRATIVE APPROACHES: “An integrative model for heart disease, when done properly, hunts down chronic inflammation in the body wherever it is and attempts to remedy it naturally, which is why we have had so much more success and significantly fewer side effects than conventional medicine,” says naturopathic cardiologist Decker Weiss, of Scottsdale, Arizona, a pioneer in the field. Typically, integrative cardiologists will interview a patient to determine the root causes of inflammation, including diet, physical activity and emotional stress. After targeted lab tests, they may prescribe botanicals along with pharmaceuticals like diuretics and beta blockers to manage fluids and vital signs. They often focus on repairing the gastrointestinal tract with specific probiotics and restoring the endothelium (the inner lining of blood vessels) with nutrients like magnesium, coenzyme Q10 and alpha-lipoic acid. They’ll encourage patients to switch to healthier, plant-based diets; perhaps to undergo a colon, liver or lymph cleanse; and exercise and use stress-reducing practices like meditation or martial arts.

ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION Erectile dysfunction (ED), the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sex, often drives a man to seek medical care. An erection—a complex interplay among the brain, hormones, emotions, nerves, muscles and blood vessels—can be hampered by such conditions as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, insomnia and alcohol use. Although a quarter of new patients with ED are under age 40, mild and moderate ED affects approximately 50 percent of men in their 50s and 60 percent in their 60s.

Integrative medicine offers potent strategies such as exercise, weight loss, good sleep and a varied diet, factors that can reverse ED, according to Australian researchers. “Men aren’t ever going to stop eating hotdogs in the name of ‘wellness’, but if you tell a man that eating hotdogs will impact his ability to get erections, he’ll never eat a hotdog again,” says Spar. SYMPTOMS: repeated difficulty getting or maintaining an erection, reduced sexual desire. NEW RESEARCH: In a survey of 12 studies involving 8,300 participants, the longer-lasting erection drug Cialis (tadalafil) beat out Viagra (sildenafil) as the drug of choice by a three to one margin. Cornell researchers found that of the 48 percent of older men in one study with ED, only 7 percent had tried an erection drug, and fewer than half refilled the initial prescription, partly due to unpleasant side effects. INTEGRATIVE APPROACHES: An integrative strategy typically involves a doctor checking and increasing a man’s testosterone levels if necessary; a thorough checkup and lab tests to detect and treat causes such as diabetes and high cholesterol; and vetting and replacing medications such as antihistamines and blood pressure drugs that might cause ED. For relationship problems, anxiety or depression, a cognitive behavioral therapist might be recommended and mindfulness meditation might be encouraged to reduce stress. A weight-loss plan featuring more produce and less meat is typically suggested: men with a 42-inch waist are 50 percent more likely to have ED than men with a 32-inch waist. Some foods like arginine-rich oatmeal and antioxidant-rich pomegranate juice, as well as supplements like DHEA, L-arginine, zinc and panax ginseng have also proven helpful in studies. Effective exercises include Kegels to strengthen pelvic floor muscles, Pilates to build core strength and aerobic workouts to strengthen blood vessels. Just 30 minutes of walking each day was linked to a 41 percent drop in risk for ED, Harvard researchers found.

PROSTATE CANCER Prostate cancer affects one in eight men, 60 percent of which are over age 65. African American men get prostate cancer younger, have more severe cases and are twice as likely to die from it. Although it’s not as virulent as most other cancers, it requires monitoring, sometimes for decades, which compels some men to get serious about diet and exercise. “If you hear you have cancer, the rug is pulled out from underneath you and you feel you’ve lost your locus of control to surgeons and other doctors,” says integrative oncologist Donald Abrams, of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco. “But lifestyle changes are important, useful and have an impact, and they’re something patients themselves have control over and can decide to do.”

gambling, womanizing and workaholism,” concludes a major University of Michigan study in JAMA Psychiatry. Irritability, blowing up at minor annoyances, sudden spells of aggression and risky behaviors are other hallmarks. Men are far less likely than women to seek treatment and four times as likely to die by suicide.

SYMPTOMS: They may be silent or involve frequent urination, weak or interrupted urine flow, urinary leaking, needing to urinate frequently at night, blood in the urine, erectile dysfunction or discomfort when sitting. NEW RESEARCH: The more faithfully that men with localized prostate cancer followed a Mediterranean diet, the better their disease fared, report University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center researchers. Drinking several cups of coffee every day may be linked to a lower risk of developing prostate cancer, suggests a pooled data analysis in the online journal BMJ Open. A new urine test for prostate cancer is so accurate it could have eliminated the need for one-third of biopsies in a recent study of 1,500 patients in the Journal of Urology.

SYMPTOMS: Besides anger and irritability, depressed men are more prone to lose weight rather than gain it, become obsessive-compulsive rather than anxious and experience physical problems like headaches, stomach ailments and chronic pain. NEW RESEARCH: Men with moderate to high levels of what Russian researchers call “vital exhaustion”, marked by excessive fatigue, demoralization and irritability, are 16 percent more likely to have a heart attack within 15 years. The risk doubles for men that never married, were divorced or became widowed.

INTEGRATIVE APPROACHES: In a A patient receiving NeuroStar transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy. 2018 comprehensive review of prostate cancer studies published in the Journal of INTEGRATIVE APPROACHES: “First, Alternative and Complementary Medicine, it is important to get a lab screening to rule out low testosterone, Abrams recommends a plant-based, antioxidant-rich diet that vitamin deficiencies, anemia and thyroid problems,” says holistic emphasizes cruciferous vegetables, tomatoes, soy, pomegranate, psychiatrist W. Nate Upshaw, M.D., medical director of Neurogreen tea and fish-based omega-3s; limiting meat, sugary drinks SpaTMS, in Tampa. He also checks for sleep disorders, treats and saturated fats; supplementing with vitamin D3 and omega-3s with cognitive behavioral therapy and after getting lab results, while avoiding selenium and vitamin E; exercising daily, with yoga suggests such supplements as vitamins B12, D3 and methylfolate. and tai chi especially providing mind-body benefits; and using acupuncture to manage the side effects of conventional treatments. His lab focuses particularly on transcranial magnetic stimulation To combat the anxiety that can arise during the period between a therapy, which a 2020 Stanford study found to be 90 percent diagnosis and surgery, Abrams suggests stress-reducing therapies effective in relieving drug-resistant depression. “It restores like mindfulness training, reiki and support groups. healthy brain function without medications, and with essentially no side effects,” says Upshaw, adding that the approach DEPRESSION is particularly good for men that want to avoid the sexual side effects of antidepressants. Up to one-third of men may experience depression, but it’s marked more by bravado than tears. “Rather than appearing sad, men with depression are more likely to react with anger, self-destructive Natural health writer Ronica O’Hara can be reached at behavior, self-distraction, or numbing of pain with substance use, OHaraRonica@gmail.com.

A Different Kind of Eye Color When the whites of our eyes aren’t white, a trip to the doctor may be in order by Rudrani Banik, M.D. with a painless flat brown spot on the eye, similar to a freckle, that slowly changes over time. PAM usually develops in middle-aged people and appears in one eye. If PAM is not treated, it can become cancerous, so an ophthalmologist should examine any new brown spots that develop on the eye.

Red or Pink

THE WHITE PART OF THE EYE that serves as a protective layer is called the sclera, which covers more than 80 percent of the eyeball’s surface. A healthy sclera should be white. If it becomes yellow or discolored, an underlying condition may be present. Here are some reasons why the sclera might turn color.

Redness in the eye can be due to various injuries or conditions. It is imperative to have your ophthalmologist examine your eyes, specifically if redness comes with blurry vision, pain or discharge. A bright red spot on the sclera is typically a sign of subconjunctival hemorrhage: a broken blood vessel has leaked between the conjunctiva and the sclera under the white of the eye. This is typically harmless and resolves on its own within one to two weeks. Bloodshot eyes are due to the dilation of blood vessels in the conjunctiva. They typically happen when you are tired, have dry eyes or allergies, have been exposed to smoke or have irritation from contact lenses. Bloodshot eyes can also happen due to an eye infection like conjunctivitis (pink eye). Sometimes red eyes can raise more serious eye concerns, such as glaucoma or uveitis.

Yellow

Blue or Gray

If a small patch of yellow tissue bulges out of the conjunctiva, this could be a pinguecula, which is caused by UV damage from the sun, along with wind or dust damage. These patches sometimes become inflamed and appear red. If a pinguecula is left untreated, it can turn into pterygium, which is also known as “surfer’s eye.” Pterygium is a larger growth that can extend to the cornea, eventually blocking vision. If the entire sclera becomes yellow, jaundice may be the problem. Jaundice occurs due to a buildup of old red blood cells called bilirubin, which are filtered out by the liver and turned into bile. Typically, bile is stored in the gallbladder and excreted by the body. Jaundice occurs when the liver, pancreas or gallbladder isn’t functioning properly. A sclera that’s turning yellow warrants a visit to a healthcare provider.

Brown Due to high levels of dark brown pigment called melanin, African Americans may have brownish spots on the sclera, which are harmless. Brown spots can also be a nevus or a freckle on the eye. But sometimes brown spots can raise some concerns. Primary acquired melanosis (PAM) is a precancerous condition that begins

Long-term use of certain medications can give the sclera a blue-gray tint. Certain antibiotics, such as minocycline (used to treat rosacea and rheumatoid arthritis), can produce this effect. Minocycline can also make the skin, ears, teeth or fingernails appear blue-gray. The sclera can also thin out and allow the choroid, the tissue beneath it, to peek through, creating a bluish discoloration. A thin sclera can develop in people born with osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease); Marfan’s syndrome (a connective tissue disorder); or anemia or iron deficiency. Anyone with bluish-gray discoloration of the whites of your eyes should speak with their ophthalmologist, who can refer them to a specialist if needed. Rudrani Banik, M.D., is an integrative ophthalmologist and the founder of Envision Health NYC, located at 136 East 57th St., Ste. 1502. She’s the author of the ebook 6 Secrets to Eye Health: Enjoy Clear Vision for a Lifetime, which can be downloaded for free at her website, RudraniBanikMD.com. See ad, page 33.

Drugs: Exploding the Antidepressant Myth, Irving Kirsch, Ph.D., professor of psychology at the UK University of Hull, declares, “The belief that antidepressants can cure depression chemically is simply wrong.” Antidepressants may merely mask symptoms. “Covering over symptoms is a missed opportunity to resolve the root cause of the problem,” says Manhattan-based holistic psychiatrist Kelly Brogan, author of A Mind of Your Own and co-editor of the textbook Integrative Therapies for Depression. Further, because many depressed people do not receive treatment due to financial, cultural or personal reasons, effective alternative therapies are necessary for improving public health.

Nature’s Medicine

LACK OF INTEREST, LOW ENERGY, CHANGES IN WEIGHT, difficulty concentrating and feelings of worthlessness are some of the symptoms that can occur in varying degrees with depression. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 17.3 million adults in the U.S. experienced at least one major depressive episode in 2017. With the pandemic, the rate tripled, with 27.8 percent of adults reporting symptoms, according to a September 2020 study published in JAMA Network Open. Mainstream medical doctors typically prescribe antidepressant drugs, but the plethora of adverse effects such as anxiety, digestive disturbances, headaches, weight gain and sexual dysfunction can cause additional woes. In addition, efficacy is in question. In The Emperor’s New 22

Before starting any treatment, it’s important to verify that depression exists and rule out potential conditions like nutritional deficiencies, low thyroid function, food allergies or other issues. Many people find that herbs provide gentler action and fewer adverse effects than conventional antidepressants. Even some conventional health practitioners are beginning to get on board. Women’s health expert Nicole Galan, RN, wrote in a 2019 article in Medical News Today, “Medications and counseling are conventional ways to alleviate the symptoms of depression. However, some herbs and supplements may also help.” Common herbs include St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum), which has been shown to work about the same as antidepressants for mild and moderate depression; American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) and Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng), which improve mental clarity and energy, and reduce the effects of stress; and saffron (Crocus sativus), which is safe and effective, although expensive. While herbal medicines are available over the counter, it’s important to consult with a doctor or herbalist, as some are not safe in conjunction with other medications or during pregnancy. Homeopathic remedies are more complex, personalized and diluted, but have no contraindications. Lone Pedersen, a certified classical homeopath in Seattle, says that homeopathy treatments are “gentle, safe, non-toxic and side-effect free.”

Clean Food Improves Mood Several studies have found that eating a poorquality diet high in processed meat, sweets, fried food, refined cereals and high-fat dairy leads to a higher likelihood of depression. “The single greatest thing anyone can do for their health is to eat whole foods, including organic vegetables, fruits, high-quality proteins, whole grains and healthy fats,” says Dorothy Calimeris, an author and wellness coach in Oakland, whose cookbooks promote anti-inflammatory diets for optimal health. Inflammation has been linked to numerous health issues, including depression. To start an anti-inflammatory diet, eliminate foods that commonly trigger inflammation, starting with gluten, soy, corn and the biggest culprit of all, sugar. A 2019 study by University of Kansas researchers and other studies indicate that sugar itself is a trigger for mental health issues. Don’t forget about the “food” the skin absorbs. Switching to organic body care and home cleaning products minimizes exposure to biology-disrupting toxins that have been linked to depression.

Set the Endorphins Free Many studies have shown that exercise reduces the symptoms of depression. Extra boosts come from getting outside to increase levels of vitamin D and exercising with a friend to enhance social support. Just 20 to 30 minutes of activity several times each week improves well-being. The best news is that any movement helps—walking, tai chi, gardening, dancing—anything that feels good. “Taking a yoga class helps to relieve depression by increasing focus and attention, releasing endorphins and oxytocin, stretching the body, relaxing tension, creating community and adjusting breathing patterns,” says Rose Kress, owner and director of LifeForce Yoga Institute, in Lebanon, Oregon, and author of Awakening Your Inner Radiance with LifeForce Yoga. She recommends determining one enjoyable pose and practicing it every day: “Five minutes a day is enough to make a change.” Julie Peterson writes about wellness and environmental issues and has contributed to Natural Awakenings for more than a decade. NAME: Rachel Engel, business development manager at ShiftMed. Married to Amanda Engel, counselor at a Long Island high school. FAVORITE QUOTE: “Be your own reason.” Levi’s used it back in the ’90s in an ad that stuck with me all these years. Every time I question anything, that quote pops into my head and helps me clarify my thoughts. WHEN DID YOU COME OUT, AND WHAT DID THAT JOURNEY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? I came out to myself when I was about 15. I realized I was having different feelings, and although I wanted so badly to feel “normal” and like boys the way my friends did, I just didn’t. I started telling friends in 1999, when I left for college and could separate myself from having to face them. The support from my friends was amazing. A few of them were younger, so I know they went back and told their parents so that they could process the information with the help of an adult, but most of them either thought they already knew or were just happy that I was happy. Telling my parents was a little harder. I know they wanted what was best for me and what would make my life “easier.” They wanted to make sure that I had explored all my options before cementing the idea of being “gay.” Once they saw how happy I was in a relationship, they became a lot more understanding and accepting. Things were so different then, and I’m grateful that I had the love and support that I needed along the way. Amanda came out to her friends right before she met me. They were incredibly supportive and loving. She came out to her brother and then her parents after she met me. They were also very loving and supportive and welcomed me into the family. WERE THERE UNFORESEEN EMOTIONS AND FEELINGS ALONG THE WAY? Quite a few. Back in June 2011, when it became legal to marry your same-sex partner in New York—that was something I never thought would happen. To be alive and in a beautiful and loving relationship at that time, to be engaged to my girlfriend and know that we would legally be considered the same as any other married couple, was an emotion I’ll never forget. I married that person a year later. Her name was Abby, and she and I had spent years together. We had a beautiful wedding and honeymoon. Another unforeseen emotion was her being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and passing away nine months later. Having the chance to marry Abby was one of the best memories life has offered me. I was able to stand by her side for better or for worse and until death did we part. I took care of her through her illness, something I may not have been able to do if we weren’t married legally. 24

Another unexpected feeling was falling in love again— not necessarily moving on, but moving forward, with Amanda. She is loving and caring and incredibly supportive of me. Now we have a 3-year-old, Ruby, and another baby on the way. I’m so grateful to have Amanda as my wife and life partner. I love her endlessly. DO YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC MEMORY THAT CONJURES UP YOUR JOURNEY OF LIVING A LIFE OF TRUTH AND AUTHENTICITY? I’ve never been one to “stay in the closet” for long when meeting someone new or starting a new job. My entire teenage and adulthood has been a journey of living my best life and being as authentic and truthful to myself as possible. HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME SELF-IMPOSED AS WELL AS SOCIETAL LIMITATIONS? I try not to think too deeply about limitations. I’m the product of a family of Holocaust survivors. I’ve heard stories of sadness, terror, horror, loss, struggle, grief and depression. We lost so many incredible family members, but I am here today because my grandparents were “lucky enough” to have made it through World War II. Their stories give me the strength, compassion, empathy, knowledge, intelligence and confidence to keep go-

something, it’s just because they didn’t know, and once they do they are really happy to know us. We live in a city by the beach where there are a ton of same-sex couples and families. We’re really lucky to have this community.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR GAY PEOPLE STRUGGLING TO COME OUT? It gets better. It does. Find a group, a person, a book— anything that helps. Just be true to yourself and things will fall into place. It takes time. Anything good does.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ACTIVITY TO DO WITH YOUR CHILD? I have two sisters and a brother, and Amanda has a brother. We spend a lot of time with our family. Ruby has five girl cousins, another girl cousin on the way, and a brother or sister coming as well! She’s surrounded by so much love. We spend weekends in the park, at soccer games, taking road trips, and putting our toes in the ocean, and then we do seasonal activities like going to the zoo, apple picking and so on. We love anything that keeps us active and having fun. We also love a good movie night snuggled up with popcorn and a Disney flick.

ON PARENTING When did you realize that you wanted to be a parent? There was never a time in my life that I didn’t want to be a mom. This was always a top priority to me. DID YOU HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT DISCRIMINATION OR DIFFICULTIES YOU OR YOUR CHILD MIGHT FACE? Being a lesbian mom, part of a two-mom squad, of course I have concerns. I never want my babies to feel discriminated against. I never want them to be made fun of or asked questions that they’re uncomfortable answering. I’ve been in close contact with Ruby’s teachers and her circle of school friends to keep conversations open. If another child questions why Ruby doesn’t have a daddy, or why she has two moms, we’ve come up with answers that are easily understandable and make Ruby feel special to have the family that she has. Luckily we live in a close-knit community with many same-sex couples with children, so she’s not alone. WAS THE DECISION TO HAVE A CHILD SOMETHING YOU AND AMANDA AGREED ON FROM THE START? Absolutely. We actually met on a dating app, and it was one of the questions that we asked each other when getting to know one another. JUST TO ADD IN: I am Ruby’s birth mom, but Amanda is my equal partner and couldn’t be a better mom to Ruby. Ruby calls me Mama, and Amanda is Mommy. Amanda is now carrying our next child, from the same donor. So Ruby will be related to Amanda’s child, and that to me is so special. It’s a bond that we dreamed of having for our children, and although the journey wasn’t easy, we are so excited for what’s to come! WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR GAY COUPLES THINKING ABOUT BECOMING PARENTS? Having children is incredible. They give you hope and love that you’ll never ever be able to understand the depth of until you feel it first-hand. Being gay should not define whether you will be a good or bad parent. Find a community that feels like a safe and supportive place to start your family. Don’t give up on your dream.

ON LIFE IN LONG ISLAND WHAT’S IT LIKE RAISING CHILDREN AS A GAY COUPLE IN LONG ISLAND? It’s like raising children as anyone else. We typically have to correct people when they ask where her dad is or who the birth mom is, but we never allow it to become an uncomfortable conversation. Typically if someone assumes

WHAT LOCAL CAUSES DO YOU SUPPORT? I’m on the board of Katie’s Art Project, a nonprofit that connects kids facing life-threatening illnesses with artists through “collaborative programs to create a lasting legacy through art, music and dance.” I joined in honor of my late wife, Abby, as it was created by our best friend and her lifelong friend, Stephanie Klemons. ANY FINAL THOUGHTS? I feel so lucky to be gay. Sounds crazy to some, but it’s given me the opportunity to keep my eyes and heart open. I have compassion and empathy for so many living things. I want what’s best for my children, my wife, our life, and the lives of everyone good in this world. I want my child to know how much we love her and how much we wanted her. We climbed many mountains to get to where we are now. My parents were right when they said it’s not easy, but it is so worth it. June 2021

The Case Against DIY Health Care by David Pollack, DC

SOMETIMES WE NEED TO CALL A PLUMBER. I happen to be quite handy. I can repair many of the different problems that come with home ownership. There have been leaks, electrical issues, all sorts of damage. I even rebuilt my oil burner before converting to gas. I feel pretty good about being able to handle most of the heavy lifting at home. But sometimes I need an expert—someone who really knows the ins and outs of a certain problem. I didn’t put solar panels on my roof and tie them into the main electrical panel. I definitely didn’t want to sweat the pipes for my whole-house water filter system. If I had tried to do the bathroom tile myself, it probably would have taken months and not ended up nice and straight; in fact it would have cost me time and money. I wanted it done quickly and correctly, so I hired a professional with a great reputation. He was highly recommended.

Finding What Works I experimented with my body and health, as many people do, before I devoted my life to the art and science of healing. During my schooling I bought, tried and experimented with so many different supplements, herbs and preparations, trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t. I realized how much quality matters. I learned the difference between high-grade, powerful clinical herbs and . . . honestly, junk. I also tried many forms of treatment and technologies from different practitioners. Finding someone who truly knows what they’re doing can be hard. Sometimes I would use one chiropractor for my neck and another for my low back, because they were just better at those areas. And as most doctors know, we often need someone on the outside to take an honest, objective look at us. We can’t always figure ourselves out. 26

‘Experience and Insight’ Nothing is more important than our health. Our level of vitality and energy can truly have a make-or-break impact on our lives. If all four wheels on our car were damaged, we would find the finances to fix it. Yet for some reason when it’s our health in disrepair, we wait. Or we hope a magic prescription will make the problem disappear forever. Many people think they can be their own professional when it comes to supplementation—they just grab something from CVS, Costco or even Amazon. Other people decide they can solve their digestive problems by simply eliminating some foods, only to get frustrated with the results. They don’t need a professional to tell them to stop eating gluten or dairy. But to figure out why they can’t digest those things, they probably do. Finding out why our body might not be managing all of its functions with perfect harmony takes experience, insight and work. We all deserve that. Just because we have all the lumber to build a house doesn’t mean we have the tools or the know-how to do it. Sometimes we need a helping hand, and that’s OK. To make a radical shift in our health and well-being, a good first step is to find a professional: an experienced, highly recommended functional medicine practitioner. AFTER MORE THAN A YEAR IN SOCIAL ISOLATION, many of us are ready to hit the road, meet new people, fly to exotic locations and enjoy the sights and flavors of anywhere-but-here. Although the travel industry is raring to serve pentup demand, this unprecedented respite can be an opportunity to reset priorities. When choosing hotels, modes of transportation, places to shop and dine, and other activities, consider their sustainability. Tourism need not harm the planet. With proper planning, it can enrich it while benefiting the people living in the places we visit.

“Flying is the most carbon-intensive thing we can do in our lives,” says Holly Tuppen, author of Sustainable Travel: The Essential Guide to Positive Impact Adventures. To reduce emissions, she recommends flying direct in space-saving economy seats; taking longer, less frequent vacations; and using trains or other overland transportation whenever possible. NYCNaturalAwakenings.com

Take it Slow In 2010, Tuppen travelled around the world without flying for 20 months. “We walked, biked, sailed across the Atlantic, got on a container ship across the Pacific, took trains, hitchhiked—a whole heap of transport cobbled together,” she recalls. “It’s not that bucket-list idea of flying into a place, doing everything quickly and ticking off experiences. With slow travel, you’re letting the journey be part of the experience and inevitably, you meet more people along the way.”

Don’t Overdo It In another eco-friendly aspect of that excursion, Tuppen visited places that weren’t tourism hotspots. “From Venice to Bali to Mexico, there are examples of places that before the pandemic had too many visitors—more than the infrastructure could handle,” she says. “That’s a massive problem, because it harms the life of local people. When the cruise industry started to stop in Dubrovnik, Croatia, for example, local amenities like hairdressers and grocery stores became souvenir shops.”

Keep it Local According to Tuppen, the needs of locals should take precedence over those of tourists. A related problem is tourism economic leakage. “If you spend $2,000 on a trip to Thailand, my hope would be that I’d be contributing $2,000 to the economy in Thailand, but in reality, the way that the tourism supply chain is set up, a huge proportion of that money will end up in the hands of international companies,” she explains. “Ideally, we should be looking for accommodations, experiences, stores, restaurants that are all locally owned rather than being part of an international chain. If you’re booking a hotel, 70 percent or more of the workforce should be local.”

There are hundreds of participating hotels in 22 countries benefitting 70 global charities with an emphasis on fighting poverty, advancing environmental sustainability and reducing inequalities in communities.

“It’s a way to connect, feel good and have meaningful experiences, knowing that your travel dollars are leaving the destination better than before you arrived,” Blotter says. Sandra Yeyati, J.D., is a professional writer. Reach her at SandraYeyati@ gmail.com.

Pack for a Purpose To help travelers express their gratitude to a community for their hospitality, Rebecca Rothney founded PackForAPurpose.org, which lists items locals need and the accommodations and tour companies that deliver them to more than 450 community projects worldwide. Travelers dedicate a portion of their luggage space to carry inkind donations and drop them off when they arrive at their hotel or meet their tour guide. Common items are medical and school supplies, as well as crafting materials for women to make and sell items like jewelry and trinkets, providing money to pay for their children’s education. “A stethoscope weighs less than a kilo, but it can touch 10,000 hearts,” she says.

Book Kind Hotels Finding sustainable accommodations can be challenging and time-consuming, but KindTraveler.com is helping to change that. Recognized by Travel + Leisure as a 2020 Global Vision Award recipient, the hotel booking platform offers exclusive rates and perks from vetted, Earth-friendly accommodations when travelers make a nightly donation to a local charity that positively impacts the community visited. “A $10 donation will provide care for a rescue kitten for one month in Belize, clean 250 pounds of trash out of a waterJune 2021

TO MAXIMIZE HEALTH AND MINIMIZE OUR IMPACT ON THE PLANET, a whole-food, plant-based diet reigns supreme. Cooking at home ensures quality-controlled ingredients, but when traveling, extra measures are needed to enjoy healthy options while avoiding the allure of diet-busting, processed foods. The key to success is a combination of planning and resolve.Much can be done before the trip begins. Research the destination and road trip stops, says Julieanna Hever, registered dietitian and author of Plant-Based Nutrition (Idiot’s Guides). She recommends reviewing online menus, calling ahead to clarify options and using apps like Yelp.com and HappyCow.net to scout for restaurants and grocery stores. Her favorite places are Thai and Mexican eateries, as well as steakhouses for their plant-based side dishes. Upon arrival at her destination, she hits a grocery store to stock up on fresh fruits and veggies. “We live in an extremely difficult food environment, with a lot of triggers and inputs that don’t go away even if you’ve been eating a healthy diet for a long time,” says Micaela Karlsen, Ph.D., senior director of research at the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and author of A Plant-Based Life. “For people that are transitioning into this new lifestyle, the highly refined foods they are used to eating are kind of low-grade addictive substances and what researchers call hyper-palatable foods like added fat, sugar and salt that stimulate the brain in a similar way as addictive drugs like cocaine or alcohol, so it’s really a process of withdrawal for people initially.” To combat the temptations, especially when away from home, Hever advises writing down and clearly understanding dietary goals and the reasons for eating this way. “I work with people that are very sick and with elite athletes. Their goals may be different from everyday people that want to have a vacation,” she says. “Do you want to have another heart attack or reactivate your diabetes? No. Are you totally healthy and consciously deciding to splurge once in a while? That can totally fit into a healthy lifestyle. What matters most is choosing to eat whole food, plant-based foods most of the time.” Karlsen recommends always carrying snacks. “Don’t let yourself get too hungry or too tired, because when people are extra hungry or run-down, the reward experience of eating goes up and willpower goes down,” she explains, adding that dried fruit, nuts, rice cakes, individually packaged nut butter and fresh fruits are good portable snacks to carry. At the hotel, microwaveable popcorn, as well as oats and shelf-stable, single-portion almond or soy milk, will help stave off the munchies. “I love granola, not only for breakfast, but also as a snack in the

NYCNaturalAwakenings.com

mid-afternoon,” Karlsen says. “Most store-bought granola, however, is akin to food crime. Oats are whole, healthy and cheap, but once oil, sugar and other stuff are added, the commercial product is high in fat, way too sweet and really expensive. The first time I made granola myself, I was amazed at how I didn’t even notice that the oil and sugar weren’t there. It was delicious and so satisfying.” According to both experts, a cooler in the car or a refrigerator at the destination hotel expands the kinds of home-prepared foods that can accompany travelers, including hummus spread over crudités or sprouted, whole-grain crackers, as well as any kind of leftover dishes. They both tout the convenience and tastiness of nori rolls—a wide variety of ingredients wrapped in a sheet of dried seaweed. Among Karlsen’s favorite nori fillings are tempeh baked with tamari and a little maple syrup, topped with tomato and kale; peanut butter and pickles; avocado rubbed with umeboshi plum vinegar; and sweet potato, avocado, red pepper and thinly sliced carrots. “Food is intertwined in our culture with entertainment, but thinking about food that way doesn’t really serve our biological potential for wellness,” says Karlsen. “People are so accustomed to these highly rewarding, intense foods like buffalo wings, pizza or chocolate cake that they actually don’t know what it feels like to enjoy something that’s simple and unrefined. There’s a lot of enjoyment in healthy eating. The longer you do it, the more it becomes enjoyable.” Carol Sanders is a professional writer and can be reached at GoodEyePress@gmail.com.

Andria Somers on

Being United for Better Parenting ANDRIA SOMERS IS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE HOLISTIC MOMS NETWORK (HMN), which connects families interested in positive, holistic parenting, health and green living, providing them with helpful information and other support. The organization was formed in Essex County, New Jersey, in 2002 by a handful of mothers seeking to associate with others sharing the same goals. One of the moms, Nancy Peplinski, decided to expand the vision of the informal group and established it as a nonprofit in 2003. Rapid growth made apparent the need for community support of naturally minded families across the country. In its first year of operation, HMN evolved from a local group to a nationwide organization with more than 25 chapters in 14 states. Founded on the cornerstones of community and connection, the mission of HMN is to provide a safe, supportive environment in which families can access resources and experience camaraderie in attaining natural living and gentle parenting.

How has HMN impacted your life? I attended my first HMN meeting in 2012, after my oldest daughter was born. I became a member after learning about the organization and all that they offered. That was a life-changing moment for me. HMN very quickly became a central aspect of my mothering journey. I joined the national team in November of 2012, and my role evolved to executive director in 2017. Parenting has been my most transformative experience thus far, and HMN inspires me every day on this journey with all that its volunteers, members and advocates give as far as support, knowledge, ideas and most importantly, community.

What is holistic parenting?

Holistic parenting begins with an understanding and respect for how all living things are connected and how we impact one another. Holistic parenting embraces green and non-toxic living, non-violent communication and natural health. We believe there are seven guiding principles for holistic parenting which we follow: make informed and educated parenting decisions; seek respectful and nurturing relationships with others; actively participate in one’s own healing process; balance and integrate physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of being; teach children how to respect and care about the natural world; limit children’s exposure to advertising, marketing and a consumer-driven culture; and live more simply and consume less.

32

New York City – Long Island

How does HMN differ from other parenting groups? The heart and soul of HMN is to connect families through volunteerled chapters and intentional communities across the country. We are authentic, passionate about our purpose and committed to our mission. HMN is how we bring together local parents for support and join our voices as a national community. We recognize that everyone is on their own path, yet on this journey together. Members are encouraged to respect one another’s views, offer support and learn from each other. HMN wants to generate national awareness, education and support for holistic parenting and green living. Our groups meet about once a month in a public venue where all are welcome. We provide nurturing, open-minded and respectful local community networks that encourage families to share these ideals and learn from each other.

What advice would you offer to a new parent just beginning their journey of holistic parenting?

YOUR VISION IS PRICELESS Preserve, protect, and restore it

As a parent, it’s important to have a network of support. Being connected to like-minded individuals who do not judge makes all the difference in the world. It truly does take a village to raise a child, and you can choose how you build your village. There will be countless people offering advice, so be discerning and see what resonates with you. I truly believe that we are all here to help and support one another. HMN is a way to build relationships and connect with other parents to form friendships that last a lifetime. HOCATT SAUNA HELPING TO TREAT DISEASES AND CONDITIONS WITHOUT NEEDLES IF YOU DO, THE ANSWER MAY BE PROLO-OZONE THERAPY From the Desk of Dr. Howard Robins at The Healing Center in New York City… Did you ever need and want to try intravenous ozone therapy, but then said to yourself, Getting multiple injections? That will never happen! Well, HOCATT Sauna treatments may be the answer.

What is a HOCATT Sauna?

HOCATT’ is a very special type of ozone sauna. HOCATT is an acronym that stands for Hyperthermic, Ozone, Carbonic Acid Transdermal Technology. It’s a private sauna where patients sit with their heads exposed to the air, inhaling oxygen through a comfortable nasal cannula, while their body is infused with carbon dioxide, steam, high-energy photon light and a mixture of ozone and oxygen gas. The effects of HOCATT can be very similar to those of intravenous ozone therapy. It may reduce pain and inflammation, calm inflamed nerves and relax tight muscles. It can also help inactivate viruses, bacteria, yeast, fungi and parasites; remove harmful free radicals; and destroy toxins. HOCATT can increase blood circulation and therefore speed up healing. It may also improve brain function and memory loss.

Who should try a HOCATT Sauna?

Another benefit of HOCATT is that it contains frequency-specific microcurrent, often called Rife therapy. Microcurrent therapy can help heal damaged cells by increasing the production of ATPs (energy molecules) within the healthy and damaged mitochondria in your cells. It can also reduce inflammation by diminishing prostaglandins and cytokine production and can help the body detoxify. During this part of the session, high-energy photon light is emitted inside the sauna (you won’t see it). This light helps increase blood flow and is also considered anti-inflammatory. The carbonic acid cycle lasts three minutes, after which a specified amount of ozone-oxygen is infused into the sauna cabinet. This gas initially reacts with the steam to create hydrogen peroxide, which helps destroy viruses, bacteria, yeast and fungi embedded in the skin. The remainder of the ozone-oxygen gas mixture will then be absorbed through your skin into your body, where it circulates.

All this is happening at the same time during each treatment! When the sauna finishes, the remaining gases within the cabinet are extracted into an ozone destructor so you can safely exit the unit. You’ll notice that your body smells especially clean and fresh

Many people require multiple forms of therapy, Bottom Line including ozone therapy, to reach their health goals. Simple Acts Can Change the World

REDUCE PAIN with CBD

by Julie Peterson

BE THE CHANGE. If the park needs more shade, ask permission to plant a tree. If there is trash on the sidewalk, pick it up. An eyesore building could be a community art project. The possibilities are endless. Sometimes the very things that we complain about can be turned into action items, improving conditions for everyone. Fix something. CHOOSE GRATITUDE. It’s difficult to miss the news as it pops up on phones, computers and TV. But media outlets can offer a repetitive loop of negativity and conflict. When exposed to this for hours, it can erode faith in humanity and hope for the future. To prevent feeling a sense of soul-crushing doom, we must tune out of the constant chatter. Select 30 minutes every other day to read news. We will become more positive if we spend the former news time listening to music or writing in a gratitude journal. Appreciate the good. FIND COMPASSION. When there is no shortage of road rage, angry customers and political divisiveness, don’t engage. We never know what another person has gone through in life or earlier that day. Don’t be a judge; be a vector to peace. Let the driver merge, let others be right, let our buttons get pushed without escalating the situation. Loving kindness for others involves wishing them health, happiness

and safety. It doesn’t need to be outwardly expressed; it can be an internal thought. Respect everyone. BE KIND. Perhaps there is someone that would appreciate a meal or help with chores. Offer time without expectation of a reward. Random acts of kindness can be done anonymously: pay the toll for the next car, deliver a care package, donate supplies to a local nonprofit or simply smile at strangers. Give freely. Every time we fix, appreciate, respect and give with a genuine heart, there is a ripple effect. Everyone we touch feels better. Moving forward, these people likely will be kinder to others. Envision each genuine act pouring forth like a wave of light, gathering momentum as others add their light. Imagine it can wash over the Earth, touching everyone. We can make a difference. Start now. Julie Peterson is a Random Acts of Kindness activist (RAKtivist.com), an assistant to the Wisconsin Kindness Angel and an advisor for Kindness Bank, a nonprofit invested in improving community health and well-being.

Three Ways Infrared Can Improve Your Mood

e all have moments when we’re down in the dumps. When you’re battling anxiety, sadness, fatigue or frustration, wrapping your body in soothing infrared heat can leave you feeling more relaxed, calm, warm and fuzzy. (Well, maybe not fuzzy, but you get the point!) Here are the top three ways an infrared session can improve your mood and provide wellness benefits at the same time.

Better Relaxation When you’re in a funk, attempting to “relax” is often a challenge. Your mind is racing and you aren’t focused. And while this experience is very common, there is a solution. Have you ever walked outside on a sunny day and noticed your spirits lift immediately? Sometimes a little bit of heat on your skin is all you need. When you wrap up with infrared heat, the soothing rays work to lower or balance your levels of cortisol, the fight-or-flight hormone made in the adrenal glands. This hormone raises your heart rate and blood pressure, and high cortisol levels can lead to health problems, trouble sleeping and weight gain. During an infrared session, cortisol levels may remain the same or slightly increase. However, after a session, cortisol levels can drop drastically, leaving you feeling heaps more relaxed than before your session.

Improved Sleep In our fast-paced world, with long to-do lists and struggles to maintain work-life balance, many people deal with chronic insomnia or restless sleep. Infrared can improve your trips to dreamland both by lowering cortisol levels and by increasing 36

serotonin levels. A 2009 study done on patients experiencing depression and insomnia found that frequent infrared immersion increased their serotonin, which directly and positively impacts poor mood, sleep and behavior. The study participants also experienced lower levels of MDA, a common marker for oxidative stress, which occurs when the body produces more free radicals than antioxidant defenses.

Less Toxicity Mood swings and sluggishness may indicate toxic overload. (Other symptoms include frequent illness, congestion and body pain.) High toxicity levels can also stress your organs and tissues and alter your ability to get a good night’s sleep. Those who detox regularly report a sense of clarity and relaxation. Infrared heat makes you sweat, and because it penetrates an inch and a half into the body, your sweat

can carry out ammonia, sulfuric acid, nicotine, alcohol, mercury and other environmental toxins. When this accumulated waste is removed, it allows your body to function properly, leaving you feeling lighter and more refreshed. When your spirits are low, practicing self-care is an excellent way to recharge your batteries. Infrared body wrap sessions are exceptionally helpful during these times, because all you need to do to soak up the benefits is lie down and relax.
