A Fantasy Sundae at Divine Treasures in Manchester

I

t’s a vision we all have at the height of summer: thick, creamy soft-serve ice cream with hot fudge and caramel sauce oozing down the sides, chocolate chunks and cookie crumbles sprinkled on top. Is it possible to experience this divine dream while living a health-conscious lifestyle? In your quest for the answer, we welcome you into Divine Treasures’ kitchen, where every product is vegan and glutenfree. We begin our signature soft-serve recipe with a bucket of raw cashews and almonds, which we soak in water overnight before blending into a smooth, rich cream. Using whole nuts as our base means they retain the nutritional value of their protein and healthy fats. Imagine…a dessert that’s truly satisfying and doesn’t leave your kids (or you!) craving more sugar. We focus only on real ingredients when creating our flavor varieties, like blending organic frozen strawberries for a refreshing cone, or adding peppermint essential oil and a dash of spirulina for classically green mint chip. Organic cane sugar provides the sweetness, and we continue to develop more flavors and frozen treats with low-glycemic coconut sugar as the need and desire for this option grows. And of course, no dairy necessary! Dairy is a common allergen among all ages and an inflammatory ingredient for many, so our soft-serve is a perfect way for all to enjoy going out for ice cream with family or friends—especially with our from-scratch sauces on top! ur body has a natural system in place for handling stress. It’s commonly known as our fight or flight response, but the formal title is acute stress response. Even when the situation that activates it isn’t as serious as the terminology might lead you to believe, it’s still working. Our heart rate might spike and our nervous system will fire up because of this survival mechanism. It’s natural for our stress regulators to get triggered now and then, but when they’re getting triggered constantly it can throw our bodies out of balance. For this reason, developing and practicing different habits to help ourselves handle the increased number of daily stressors we encounter is vital. As it gets harder and harder to avoid triggering constant stress responses, we need to figure out ways to strengthen our body’s ability to handle this trigger. There are many practices we can implement, such as yoga, meditation, and regular exercise, but CBD might provide another source of assistance. Our endocannabinoid system (ECS) is tied to our body’s ability to handle stress response, and studies have shown that maintaining the healthy function of our ECS could assist in our body’s ability to adapt to stress. Natural Harmony 100% organic CBD oils contains a blend of pure hemp oil from small regional farms using organic certified methods. Raw CBD oil is blended with fresh coconut oil for taste and third-party lab-tested for potency and purity. CBD tinctures are taken under the tongue or in a little juice or water. Using the built-in dropper, you can get a consistent dose of CBD every time.

My Pregnant Wife Was in Better Shape Than Me

JULY / AUGUST 2022

I

was almost a new dad when my wife got up from the couch at about 8 months pregnant with a big huff and said, “Wow, I’m so achy all the time, now I know what it feels like to be you!” Ouch. That one hurt. It was a good kick in the pants though, and it led me on a journey to feeling more youthful than ever. I had been dealing with aches and pains for nearly my entire life, but it wasn’t until my daughter was born when things started turning around. I discovered three keys that dramatically changed my life, and I hope they change yours, too. • Test for food intolerances. As it turns out, I’m intolerant of tons of foods I never realized. This includes grains, dairy, legumes, cane sugar, and nightshades. Eliminating these foods reduced joint pain, anxiety, dry eyes, and eosinophilic esophagitis. • Mobility and posture irst. If you don’t move well, then moving more only gets you better at getting worse. This could lead to joint pain. • Don’t overdo it. Exercise is great, of course, but pushing yourself too hard is a real possibility. The sweet spot is something you’d give a difficulty rating of 6–8 out of 10. Do this at least three times a week to improve your wellbeing but reduce the risk of injury. I hope these tips help, and I’d love to hear your story, too. Feel free to email me at revolutionsportsclub19@gmail.com. Rob Maybruch owns Revolution Sports Club in Newington, CT. He helps people work through aches and pains, get in shape, and hit their goals. O

ne of the most terrifying diagnoses a person can receive is cancer. In 2018, 1,708,921 new cancer cases were reported and 599,265 people died of cancer; for every 100,000 people, 436 new cancer cases were reported and 149 people died. While those with family histories of cancer tend to be more concerned, only about 5–10% of cancer cases are inherited. Rather, it is generally the shared risk behaviors that account for cancers in family members. For cancers that are easier to diagnose and/or treat, 80% will survive more than 10 years. However, fewer than 20% of people diagnosed with difficult to diagnose or treat cancers survive 10 years or more. Whether someone decides to undergo conventional cancer treatments or chooses alternative methods such as nutritional therapies, acupuncture, meditation, or other treatment modalities, the most effective way to protect oneself from cancer is discovering it early, when it is most treatable and can be eradicated fully. Most cancers show no symptoms until later stages, when treatment options may be limited. Furthermore, 71% of cancers are caused by cancers that are not normally screened for. When cancers are diagnosed early, before they have had time to spread, the overall survival rate is five times higher. Now at Whole Body Medicine in Fairfield, we can screen for over 50 cancers in a single blood draw using the new, revolutionary Galleri cancer-screening test. Galleri can not only detect cancer signals very early on in the body, but it can distinguish which tissue the cancer comes from. The Galleri test is more sensitive than any other cancer screening test available. For example, Cologuard, the colon screening test, only finds 3.7% of cancers present. In contrast, Galleri has a predictive value of 50%. This means if a cancer is detected, there is a 50% chance it is present. Furthermore, there is only a 0.5% false negative rate. This means that for every 1,000 patients tested, only five will have a false negative result, essentially ruling out cancer in the body in 995 out of 1,000 cases. Galleri does not rely upon genetic predisposition; rather, it tests for cancer footprints that can be too early for other screening or diagnostic methods to detect. If positive, this early detection and intervention can help save people from cancer. If you are interested in being screened with Galleri, please contact Jennifer Letitia, MD, at Whole Body Medicine in Fairfield. e have the power to release what is not serving us. In our busy lives, we don’t always take time to process our emotions. Perhaps there are some emotions we are afraid to acknowledge for fear of the dark corners where they reside. When we hold on to emotions, they get stuck in our bodies and surrounding energetic and auric fields. With time, these emotions can manifest as dis-ease or disharmony in our physical bodies. Similarly, when we walk through life unaware of our decision-making patterns and self-limiting beliefs, we will stay locked in a cycle until we begin to unravel them and truly understand them. The good news is that there are modalities that can help us release that which is no longer serving us so that we can align with our highest potential. Reiki energy work is a very gentle yet powerfully effective way of releasing stuck emotions from our energetic and auric fields. We don’t necessarily have to feel all the feelings, we can align with “release” and let them go. Through my coaching work, I can help you see your patterns and limiting beliefs so that you can bring awareness and transformation into your life. And with Soul Blueprint (or Akashic Record) readings, we can even zoom beyond this lifetime into past-life contracts and lessons that have carried over so that we can fulfill them. Let’s work together to align with release and get in the flow of your highest potential!

Jenny Alzate, LPC, Certified Mental Health Integrative Medicine Provider

H

aving a holistic lens of how trauma impacts the patient in mind, body, and spirit allows me to treat the whole self with an integrative toolbox. I believe in natural medicine, and this is the foundation in which clinical interventions are offered. Cognitive therapy assists with changing the mental script that developed from the traumatic experience, and we focus on rewiring the neural connections and assisting the central nervous system to reset.

What is your specialty, and why are you passionate about it?

My specialty is working with adults, primarily women and mothers. My clinical focus is to heal the original trauma wound that most likely happened during formative child years. Ultimately, the goal is for the client to learn how to reparent their own inner child. I create a space of peace, consciousness, respect, and grounding, supported by imagery, meditation, breathwork, and plant medicine so that healing occurs safely and at its right time.

What sets you apart from other practitioners in the holistic field?

I have been in the mental health field for over 24 years and co-founder of the Enlightenment Counseling Center. I am also co-administrative chair for the North Central Network of Care, and this keeps me connected to the community-based programs. As a Hispanic integrative therapist, I specialize in working with immigrants and first-generation Hispanic individuals dealing with acculturation issues.

What plans do you have for the future for your practice?

I am about to begin a year-long training in energy medicine and breathwork and it is my goal to incorporate these modalities at a deeper level in my clinical work.

Dr. Nicole Klughers, ND, PharmD, MSAc—Vis Wellness Center

A

s a licensed naturopathic physician, acupuncture specialist, former pharmacist, and wellness educator, I offer all-natural solutions to restore optimal health and help individuals reclaim a life of energy, balance, and joy. By listening closely to your story and utilizing detailed testing, I work with individuals to identify and address the root cause of their health concerns. I provide care to all ages and address a wide range of acute and chronic concerns, including digestive problems, weight gain, chronic fatigue, allergies, autoimmunity, hair loss, thyroid disorders, infertility, hormonal imbalances, hot flashes, skin conditions, anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic pain, and many other symptoms that fit no recognized diagnosis. As a foundation of treatment, I use food as medicine and develop personalized nutrition plans based on each person’s blood type, food sensitivities, genetics and health goals. Herbal medicine, nutritional supplements, acupuncture, mindfulness, motivation, and movement are some of the other common, natural approaches used in my practice.

Why are you passionate about your specialty?

While working as a pharmacist, I observed the limitations of conventional medicine in its ability to offer long-term, healing solutions. Often, patients could only take a medication for so long before another health condition, complication, or side effect developed. I knew there had to be a better way to provide care to my community and I realized many people weren’t satisfied with relying on drugs for the rest of their lives. Experienced in a variety of healthcare settings, I now practice as an integrative, naturopathic physician. Humans are incredibly complex and my commitment is to be as thorough as possible in every visit, dedicating 60 to 90 minutes per appointment and allowing for each individual to be fully understood and ask plenty of questions without feeling rushed.

Tell us about the best memory you have about being a holistic practitioner.

I’m often presented with complicated and chronic unsolved health mysteries from individuals who have not found relief elsewhere. These patients often come to my practice after seeing multiple practitioners or specialists yet still feel there are aspects of their health going unaddressed. These patients feel there are overlooked connections between a variety of their ailments. The best memories and most rewarding part of being a naturopathic physician is helping these individuals find answers.

What plans do you have for the future for your practice?

I am passionately committed, now more than ever, to support people in staying well. The word doctor derives from the Latin word “docere,” meaning “to teach.” I plan to fully embody being a doctor as a teacher. In an effort to educate and empower our growing community, every month I’ll continue to provide free wellness programs. Over the last six years, I’ve taught these classes in person; now these offerings will be held online and are available to all. Although the majority of my visits currently take place in-person, video appointments are available. Chinese medicine and nutrition turned my own health around in so many ways starting in my 20s, from reversing a heart condition, infertility, and overall health improvement. In my own practice, I see dramatic results using these tools every day for so many different issues. It is so inspiring to be able to help people improve their health and thus their quality of life.

In my practice, I aim to help people to heal themselves. I listen to my patients and try to understand the root causes of their issues, explaining that we will work towards whole health together as partners. My 27 years of experience helps me to find what will be the best treatment plan for each individual client, whether it is nutritional changes, acupuncture, meditation or lifestyle modifications.

Tell us about the best memory you have about being a holistic practitioner.

In my opinion, many illnesses are caused by the stress of our modern society as well as poor eating habits. Breaking bad habits and addictions is one of the most difficult things to do in life. Fight Disease with

Natural Remedies to Improve Sleep

By Dr. Jennifer Letitia, MD NATURAL Nutmeg

I

JULY / AUGUST 2022

12 “Ideally, a greater proportion of sleep (20–25%) occurs in the REM cycle, during which dreams, functional memory consolidation, and sometimes even problem solving take place.” —Dr. Jennifer Letitia, MD

t is one thing to be sick, but it is yet another to be sick and tired—and the two often go hand in hand. Not only is sleep important for waking up refreshed, but it is a key factor in health and well-being. Sleep is one of our most essential functions and a crucial element in many physiological processes, including development, energy conservation, brain waste clearance, immune modulation, cognition, performance, disease, and psychological state. Sleep deprivation can have significant impact on health and has been shown to affect pain, metabolism, and immunity. Thus, if sleep is compromised our immune function, energy, and other processes necessary for regaining health may be compromised as well.

Far-Reaching Effects of Sleep Deprivation

Sleep disorders are among the most common health problems, affecting an estimated 50–70 million people in the U.S. Approximately 85% of adults with significant sleep-disordered breathing remain undiagnosed. In adults, sleep duration less than 7–8 hours significantly impacts health, with cumulative effects associated with a wide range of health consequences, including an increased risk of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, heart attack, and stroke. Decreased sleep has also been associated with weight gain, low libido, poor balance, and increased accidents. In humans, there are different sleep states that can be seen on electroencephalograms (EEGs). These states cycle between rapid eye movements (REM) and non-rapid eye movements (nREM) usually 4 to 5 times a night, with each cycle lasting approximately 90–120 minutes. Ideally, a greater proportion of sleep (20–25%) occurs in the REM

cycle, during which dreams, functional memory consolidation, and sometimes even problem solving take place. Thus, if REM sleep is not optimal, memory issues can occur. In disease states such as Lyme disease, REM cycles tend to be shallower and shorter. REM sleep can also be suppressed by smoking, caffeine, alcohol, marijuana, narcotics, antidepressants, benzodiazepines, and lithium. Sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea and narcolepsy can also cause disrupted REM sleep. During sleep there is typically reduced body movement, decreased electrical activity in the brain, reduced responsiveness to external stimuli, slower breathing rates, and altered body position, including closed eyes. However, some people experience REM sleep behavioral disorder (RBD), in which the paralysis that usually happens during sleep is incomplete or absent. Thus, behaviors such as talking, yelling, kicking, jumping from bed, flailing, or grabbing can occur. RBD can happen with (and often precedes) neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and multisystem atrophy. Restless leg syndrome may also be caused by the tick-borne infections Babesia and Bartonella. Treating these will often correct restless leg syndrome. As with all disease states, it is imperative to decrease inflammation and address the underlying causes of disease. Achieving adequate sleep is a key factor in achieving health and fighting disease.

Healthy Practices to Improve Sleep

In addressing sleep disorders, it is important to have good sleep hygiene. This includes the following: • Eliminating alcohol consumption before bed • Not consuming caffeine after 4 p.m. • Not using the bed/bedroom for work or problem solving

• Not using electronics before bed • Using room-darkening shades to minimize light • Keeping phone and electronics on airplane mode and preferably in a different room • Writing down racing thoughts • Having a light snack before bed to make sure hypoglycemia is not waking you up during the night • Limiting fluids before bed • Not allowing kids and animals to sleep in your bed • Using earplugs or a sound generator if there are sleep sounds, such as snoring

If sleep hygiene is not enough, it may be necessary to use herbal supplements and/or medications to help achieve adequate sleep. When starting a new supplement or medication, it is best to start one at a time and at the lowest dose. The dose can then be increased each night until the maximum dose is reached, side effects occur, or eight hours of sleep are achieved. If eight hours of sleep are not achieved, the next remedy may be tried or added. Most individuals will need a combination of three or more sleep herbs, and it is better to take more supplements at a lower dose to avoid side effects. Typically, sleep medications can be tapered off at 18 months, decreasing after six months of sleeping well, because the hypothalamus can recover and reset. However, some individuals may need to stay on sleep medications for longer periods, or even forever. Below are some sleep supplements that have been shown to be effective for sleep: 1. Melatonin, 3–60 mg. Melatonin has been shown to improve sleep quality and duration in healthy and diseased individuals. It helps synchronize circadian rhythms, can help RBD, and is a very strong antioxidant that can boost immunity. 2. Wild lettuce, 30–120 mg. Wild lettuce helps anxiety and insomnia, headache, muscle and joint pain, and decreases r estless leg syndrome. 3. L-theanine, 5–200 mg. An amino acid from green tea, L-theanine improves deep sleep and promotes calmness during day. It also plays a role in the formation of GABA (a chemical created in the brain that has anti-seizure and anti-anxiety effects), helps with weight loss, and is an immune stimulant. 4. Jamaican dogwood extract, 20–48 mg. This extract is a muscle relaxant that aids in falling asleep and has a calming effect.

5. Hops extract, 30–120 mg. Hops can be a mild sedative for anxiety, improve insomnia, promote good sleep, and relax the muscles. It has some hormonal activity and can reduce hot flashes in menopause and has some antibiotic and antifungal activity as well. 6. Passionflower extract, 90–360 mg. Passionflower is a calming agent that treats muscle spasms, colic, dysentery, diarrhea, anxiety, and menstrual cramps. It helps with pain management, including in fibromyalgia, and may also increase men’s libido. 7. Valerian extract, 200–800 mg. Valerian extract improves deep sleep and quality of sleep and can be used for anxiety during the day. In 10% of individuals, however, it may energize them and keep them awake. It is best used in combination with other sleep supplements. 8. D-ribose, 5–30 g. This supplement helps sleep while increasing energy. 9. Magnesium, 75–150 mg. Magnesium can help sleep by relaxing muscles. 10. Lemon balm, 80–160 mg. Lemon balm improves deep sleep, especially when used with valerian. 11. 5-HTP, 100–400 mg. 5-HTP is a precursor to serotonin. It improves sleep, anxiety, and fatigue in as little as four weeks. Be careful when taking with serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), however, as the combination may cause serotonin syndrome, which can be deadly. 12. Sleep combination products. Some sleep combination products can be effective, such as Sleep by Restorative Formulations. 13. Homeopathic remedies. Homeopathic remedies such as Sleep Calm by Boiron Homeopathic Remedy can be extremely effective as well. If herbal sleep supplements are not strong enough, prescription sleep medications may be necessary. These should be discussed with a physician with prescribing capabilities. When It Comes to Fertility,

Does Sleep Really Matter?

NATURAL Nutmeg

By Dr. Nicole Kerr, ND, LAc

ur modern society’s need to go–go–go is finally catching up with our body’s need to physically slow down. The ability to operate on the fewest hours of sleep has been praised as an accomplishment, as though compromising health for wealth is an admirable trait. Unfortunately, this go–go–go mentality does not help us achieve our best health. Overwork and lack of sleep has been linked to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, as well as physical health issues, among other things effecting the function of our cardiovascular, immune, metabolic, and hormonal systems. Notably, this also includes fertility health. As with all our body’s systems, sleep is a requirement for the reproductive system to work properly.

Lack of Sleep Is Nothing to Be Proud Of

Human beings have developed as diurnal creatures over the last 5–7 million years, meaning we are meant to be awake during the daytime and asleep at night. Adults are now getting an average of 6.8 hours of sleep per night compared to nine hours just a century ago, and 40% of adults now sleep fewer than six hours per night. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society recommend that adults aged 18–60 years sleep at least seven hours each night to promote optimal health and well-being. Disruptions to this light–dark cycle timing alters

the brain’s output of many hormones, changes how the body functions, and is associated with chronic illnesses. “Sleeping less than seven hours per day is associated with an increased risk of developing chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and frequent mental distress,” according to the CDC website. Hormones that are disrupted with decreased duration, poor quality, and wrong timing of sleep include: • Luteinizing Hormone (LH): Triggers ovulation • Follicular Stimulating Hormone (FSH): Stimulates egg growth • Progesterone: Regulates menstruation and facilitates and supports pregnancy • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH): Stimulates hormone production and controls how other hormones function • Leptin: Regulates energy balance by inhibiting hunger • Melatonin: Initiates the onset of sleep and is found in amounts 2 times higher around ovaries • Prolactin (PRL): If levels are too high, this can result in an egg not being released, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and endometriosis • Estrogen (E): Maintains uterine lining needed for implantation • Testosterone (T): In men, regulates libido and aids in production of sperm; in women, testosterone is converted into estradiol and plays a role in reproduction

For women, decreased sleep coincides with postpartum depression, pregnancy difficulties, menopausal transition issues, and premenstrual stress. For men, it can result in infertility. • Unexplained Infertility: The blue light emitted by your electronics suppress melatonin, a key hormone that both helps you sleep and protects your eggs when they are close to ovulation. Without adequate melatonin production, egg quality can suffer and make achieving pregnancy more difficult. • PCOS: Without the proper timing of sleep LH is not lowered appropriately, keeping testosterone higher and progesterone lower than the body requires and leading to further ovulation problems. • Endometriosis/Estrogen Dominance: Poor sleep schedules and partial sleep deprivation are associated with increased levels of estrogen, which can decrease by 60% with regular sleep schedules. • Insulin Resistance: Eating later in the evening when sleep should be occurring can increase insulin levels. Testosterone production in the theca cells of the ovaries may also increase, further worsening fertility issues. • Recurrent Pregnancy Loss: Melatonin has been shown to be higher in follicular fluid than the general circulation and levels exhibit a 24-hour rhythm, increasing values as the egg enlarges and ovulation approaches. Melatonin aids in ensuring optimal placental function and successfully maintains pregnancy as well as corpus luteum development and progesterone production. • Luteal Phase Defect: FSH and LH are directly influenced by the light–dark cycle. When it’s dark, the brain signals the release of FSH and when the sun rises, LH rises. • Atypical Neurodevelopment of Offspring: Melatonin signal disruptions in the mother during pregnancy has been shown to increase the frequency of ADHD and autism in offspring. • Eating Disorders in Offspring: Prenatal exposure to excess testosterone has led to enlarged fat cells and binge-eating disorders in offspring. • Male Infertility: Improper sleep decreases testosterone production and sperm motility. For these and many more reasons, sleep hygiene is important when struggling to conceive.

• When: No later than 11 pm; 10 pm or earlier would be best • How Long: 7–8 hours, minimum • Quality: Follow light–dark cycle • Turn off electronics by 9 pm or use blue-light blocking or rose-colored glasses at night. These glasses have been shown to increase melatonin secretion by 70%. • Do not keep a TV in the bedroom. • Do not turn on the light at night; use red bulbs if necessary. Skin cells communicate light exposure to the pineal gland, which then decreases melatonin production in the overnight hours. • Wear a sleep mask if ambient light is in the room. • Watch the sun rise or at least get sunlight first thing prior to cell phone light, get some exposure to mid-day sun, and watch the sunset. • Try 10,000 lux of full spectrum light for 20 minutes from a light box first thing in the morning. Sleep disorders are known to be associated with reproduction challenges, and research is now showing that it is not only the time of day you sleep, but also the quality and quantity, that can impact fertility. According to a peer-reviewed article in Fertility and Sterility, “both stable circadian rhythms and cyclic melatonin availability are critical for optimal ovarian physiology and placental function. Because light exposure after darkness onset at night disrupts the master circadian clock and suppresses elevated nocturnal melatonin levels, light at night should be avoided.” Heed this warning when trying to conceive and/ or if you are having difficulty. Fighting against a functional system that has been developed over 5 million years is bound to have consequences.

nsomnia is on the rise these days for so many people, young and old. Many cases seem to be due to our new state of remote working, or at least to how much more often we are on devices. This is especially true for children who can’t seem to get away from their screens. There is also so much going on in the world, with the war in Ukraine and the threat of climate change in the not-too-distant future, that almost everyone has some form of stress response. So, what can we do about this all-too-common problem? Implementing practices that help calm the mind and the nervous system, changing our habits, and taking certain herbal medicine can all help. Let’s start with the things we can do for ourselves.

relax as well. Using an app can be very helpful rather than trying to do it on your own. Because it is something they can turn to when they feel stressed, children can also benefit greatly from meditation. I suggest meditating together with your children if they are young, as this will start them out at a young age with calming tools they will become comfortable with.

Exercise Outdoors

Qigong is an ancient system of exercise similar to the more familiar tai chi that uses slow movement, self-massage of acupuncture pathways, and conscious breathwork to move one’s energy through the body. It boosts the immune system, lowers blood pressure, improves balance, calms the mind, and relieves anxiety. Qigong and tai chi are gentle and safe for people of all ages. Qigong is becoming more popular in the U.S., so try your local library or community recreation resources to find out if there is a class near you, or find one on Zoom, YouTube, or elsewhere online.

Meditation

There are many forms of meditation available. In guided meditation, a practitioner is leading you with breath work or a body scan or is taking you on a journey to another place. You can also work on focusing your breath on your own, but this can be difficult if you’re just starting out. Some meditation apps offer music or nature sounds to

Moving your body creates chemicals in the brain called endorphins, also known as feel-good hormones. These chemicals can help create a positive outlook on life and completely change your mood. Exercising outside has the added benefit of sunlight, which is thought to increase the brain’s release of serotonin, helping you to feel calm and focused. Our bodies adapt to circadian rhythms, which work on a 24-hour cycle. If we do things like wake up, eat, and sleep at the same time every day, our bodies are programmed to be ready for those activities. For instance, if we go to bed earlier than usual our body is not ready for sleep. According to Chinese medicine it is best to go to sleep between 9–11 pm, since 11 pm–1 am is the time of the gallbladder, which is releasing bile (see the Chinese Clock on page 20). We need to be resting when this is happening so the body can fully restore. From 1–3 am, the liver nourishes and cleans the blood. If we are not in a deep sleep during this time the blood is not able to flow back to the liver to be cleansed, preventing fresh blood from being made. Chinese medicine dictates that if we don’t have this nourishment every night the organs will become out of balance, which lead to serious emotional and physical health issues. As so many of us have

experienced, not getting enough sleep creates a foggy mind, emotional instability, and a weakened immune system.

Chinese medicine also has ideal times for eating: • From 7–9 am is the time of the stomach, which likes warm, moist foods but not too rich or sweet. Grain porridges are a perfect morning meal according to this system, but we must remember not to use presweetened hot cereals or to add sweetener. • 9–11 am is the spleen time, which is perfect for digesting breakfast, exercising, and doing work that takes mental concentration. • Lunch is best between 11 am–1 pm. This is heart time, which correlates to fire and yang energy. During this time, we should have richer foods with small amounts of cool or raw foods. Our typical American lunch diet of salads or cold foods can cause bloating or fatigue after eating. Hot soup, whole grains, and steamed veggies may be better choices. • 3–5 pm is the time of the bladder, when it is sending waste to the kidneys. Many people get very tired at this time of day, possibly due to digesting a heavy, greasy meal or a cold meal as mentioned above. • Dinner is best had between 5–7 pm. This is the time of the kidneys, which is more of a yin energy. Unfortunately, many people are still working during this time. A cup of warm tea or light miso soup can support the kidneys and prevent adrenal fatigue. Food should be nourishing and light. Roasted fish and clean meats with veggies are good choices, as long as it’s before 7 pm. • From 7–9 pm is the time of the pericardium. Activities that create happiness and joy to the heart are excellent during this time. • 9–11 pm is the time for the triple burner, which is a system that connects all parts of the body together. Sleep should occur during these hours so the triple burner can heal and unite the body, preparing it for the following day.

Ashwaganda

Ashwaganda is an herb that has been used in Ayurvedic medicine in India for hundreds of years. Ashwaganda is an adaptogen that can balance your energy if you are run down or overstressed, and it also helps equalize cortisol levels, which rise drastically when someone is under stress and can lead to inflammation and burn out. It won’t make you tired or stimulated, but help you feel calm and balanced. It can be taken in pill, powder, or liquid but make sure you get a good quality brand, so you know you are getting the real thing. This can also be taken in a formula with a few other herbs that work well synergistically together.

Chamomile

Chamomile is an herb that has been used since the time of the Greeks and Romans for calming the mind and aiding insomnia. Flavonoids, quinones, and phenolic acids are the compounds present in chamomile that help create a relaxing effect. It also helps to reduce stress related headaches and loss of appetite. A nice soothing cup of chamomile tea is just what the doctor ordered before bed to help you sleep soundly and peacefully.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

There are many Chinese herbal formulas to help with insomnia. A Chinese medical practitioner who is well trained in herbal medicine can diagnose your condition and find out what is causing the issue. Is it anxiety or stress, is it the diet, or is it perhaps a weakness that needs tonifying? There is not one specific treatment for insomnia from a Chinese medical point of view because there can be many root causes for this condition. Each individual is assessed to determine the best treatment for them and their unique situation. Chinese herbal formulas are complex formulas with many herbs, so it is important to work with a knowledgeable practitioner with experience in Chinese herbal medicine. There are many options for addressing insomnia, from lifestyle changes and diet to herbal medicine, that can help resolve the underlying cause. Don’t hesitate to get help resolving insomnia because when it is not managed properly and in a timely manner, your overall health can deteriorate quickly. Inviting Extraordinary Childhood Experiences By Joyce St. Germaine, M.Ed., CHt., RYT-200

Past Lives and Transitioning Between Realms

Left-Brained and Right-Brained Thinking

As parents, grandparents, teachers, aunts, uncles, neighbors, and friends, if we believe in the importance of fostering both left-brained and right-brained thinking, we can participate in stimulating activities with the children in our lives. Left-brained development is already being reinforced through technology and traditional schooling. Simple activities in art, music, dance, and creative problem solving will give equal time to abstract, right-brain development. Hand drumming is fantastic, inviting balance in the left and right brain. To help children love and respect their planet, find ways to repurpose everyday materials. Use empty toilet paper rolls to create kaleidoscopes, old cardboard boxes, sticks, and rubber bands to create books, etc.; there are resources everywhere. Celebrate sunrises, sunsets, rainy days, cloudy days, mud puddles, fireflies, snowflakes, the moon; celebrate everything. Laugh…a lot. Laughing causes the molecules of the body to vibrate faster, creating lightness. Catch falling leaves to welcome nature’s Chi into little hands and bodies. Encourage compassionate action. Create personal ceremonies to honor the sacredness in all things. Let an area of your yard grow wild and watch what happens. Build fairy houses together and visit them often to sing or chat with the fairies. Encourage children to believe in magic and in things that cannot be explained. You will be creating space to fill with extraordinary childhood experiences.

The principles of reincarnation indicate that, from birth, our existence shifts from energetic/spiritual to energetic/spiritual now in physical embodiment. Newborns and infants carry the wisdom and memory of the non-physical realms, but without the capabilities to communicate this. It is difficult to fully transition from the energetic/spiritual realms into a physical body. For this reason, in the first six months of life, children travel back and forth between realms, so that the transition is gentler. The crown of a baby’s head is delicate and soft, allowing the energetic/spiritual body to effortlessly exit and re-enter through the crown chakra. Once fully settled into the physical body children continue to embody sacred wisdom, although they do not possess the communication skills to indicate so. I’ve discovered that once children are verbal, they often share stories and memories such as, “When I was a grandpa…” or “I was a soldier…” This is common around ages 3 and up. It lessens around age 6 or 7, once rational, linear-thinking skills are introduced, the child interprets that these past-life memories have little or no value, and a shift from right to left-brain emphasis occurs.

It is interesting to note that The Journal of the American Medical Association and The American Journal of Psychiatry have published case studies of children and reincarnation. If a child in your life mentions what may be memories of a previous lifetime, simply say “tell me more” and avoid asking leading questions. Past life memories are held in the subconscious mind; accessing the subconscious allows access of higher consciousness and thinking.

hildren are naturally connected to the people and places around them—more deeply connected in ways adults have forgotten. From birth until age 4 or 5, these connections are shifting and changing to accommodate those things the adults who are responsible for them deem important. Parents and caretakers have been taught that, as soon as possible, children must be shown how to relate to the society in which they live. Courtesies such as sharing, taking turns at play, saying please and thank you at appropriate times, and perhaps warnings such as staying away from strangers, are of the utmost importance. I suggest that equal time be given to reinforce children’s connections to the natural, spiritual, and energetic realms.

Can Improving Sleep

Reduce Your Risk for Breast Cancer?

NATURAL Nutmeg

“Dozens of studies have confirmed that maintaining adequate levels of melatonin can directly inhibit breast cancer development and growth.” —April Beaman, RDH, CTT

W

e have all struggled to get a good night’s sleep at some point in our lives. In fact, a recent survey found that fifty million Americans suffer from sleep disorders and, according to the Centers for Disease Control, “insufficient sleep is a public health epidemic.” We know lack of sleep can cause a myriad of health problems, but it may be surprising to note that it can also increase your risk of certain diseases and cancers, including breast cancer. To help keep your breasts healthy for a lifetime, getting quality is sleep is a necessity, and ensuring you have high melatonin levels is perhaps the most important step. Melatonin is widely known for its regulation of sleep-wake cycles, but more importantly, it is also a powerful cytotoxic hormone with many healing properties.

The Role of Melatonin in Overall Health

Melatonin is a hormone that is released by the pineal gland in the brain. It plays a significant role in immune function and the regulation of inflammatory mechanisms; however, its most important function is regulating the body’s “sleep cycle,” also known as the circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is simply a fancy term for your own internal clock, which runs on a 24-hour schedule. This internal clock plays an important role in when you fall asleep and wake up, so regulating it is critical for dealing with sleep disorders. When it’s dark your body produces more melatonin, but when it’s light, the production of melatonin is reduced. Therefore, people who are visually impaired or those who work night hours can have difficulty maintaining normal levels of melatonin and may be at higher risk of disease processes.

Lack of Sleep and Breast Cancer

Because of its obvious connection to sleep, melatonin is vital for breast health. The disruption of circadian rhythms may increase the risk of

breast cancer due to the lower melatonin production. In fact, in 2007, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified night shift work as a “probable human carcinogen.” Lack of sleep also has a direct effect on breast cancer risk, again due to low melatonin levels. One study conducted between 2005 and 2008 compared 1,200 women who had breast cancer with 1,300 who did not. The researchers found that women who work night shifts had a 30% higher incidence of breast cancer.

Melatonin as a Cancer Inhibitor

Dozens of studies have confirmed that maintaining adequate levels of melatonin can directly inhibit breast cancer development and growth. Melatonin is considered a cytotoxic hormone, which means it can be deadly for pathogens, including cancer cells, while being beneficial and essential for healthy cells. And there’s more— melatonin is a breast cancer tumor suppressor as well. In fact, pioneer cancer researcher Dr. David E. Blask and his team have found that during sleep, the melatonin levels in the blood (and while melatonin is being produced) can slow breast cancer growth by 70%.

How to Increase Melatonin Levels

There are simple lifestyle changes you can make right now to improve your chances for a good night’s sleep. Below are six simple steps you can begin today to sleep better and keep your melatonin levels up.

1

Cut Down on Blue Light and EMF Exposure The most important thing you can do to get a better night’s sleep and support melatonin production is to cut down on blue light and EMF exposure. Devices such as computers, televisions, tablets, and cellphones all emit blue light as well

as undetectable—yet dangerously high—EMFs (electromagnetic frequencies). Both blue light and EMFs have been shown to suppress melatonin production. A good strategy is to take frequent breaks while working on a computer or scrolling on your phone. In addition, make it a habit to turn off all devices and sources of Wi-Fi at least one hour before bedtime. Use soft light bulbs for reading, conversing, and getting ready for bed. Or better yet, investigate blue light blocking glasses to wear when the sun goes down or at least a few hours before bed. Lastly, sleep in a dark room. Invest in room-darkening curtains and block or remove anything from your bedroom that produces light, such as a digital alarm clock.

Lower Stress We all know stress can keep us up at night—no studies need to be cited to know how that works! To help reduce stress, incorporate practices into your life that can gently and gradually reduce overall stress. This may include journaling, meditation, prayer, or time in nature. You will notice increased calm throughout your day, which will help when you’re ready to lie down at night. Furthermore, adding these practices can help you remain calm, no matter what comes your way.

Aromatherapy Studies have found that aromatherapy and essential oils help with sleep and certain essential oils, such as lavender, vetiver, bergamot, and sandalwood, are known to have a calming effect. The olfactory nerve receptors located in the mucosa of your nasal cavity are responsible for relaying sensory data to the brain, which is especially beneficial for sleep. Simply put, when you smell an essential oil during aromatherapy your olfactory receptors send signals to your brain, helping prepare your body for a restful sleep. Before bed, simply inhale deeply straight from the bottle or use a diffuser, which releases a mist of essential oils into the room while you sleep. You can also put a drop of essential oil in your hand, rub them together, and breathe in deeply, then rub your hands over the pillow and on the bottoms of your feet. A word of caution, however—all essential oils are not created equal. There are many on the market that are simply just fragrances, synthetically created and causing more harm than good when used. To ensure you are receiving the therapeutic benefits of an essential oil, be sure to only use a certified pure, tested-grade brand.

has a different tolerance level for caffeine. That morning cup of coffee is a “necessity” for some people, so just be sure it does not affect your sleep patterns. If you need a caffeine “fix” during the day, consider superfoods that contain lesser amounts of caffeine in addition to healing phytonutrients. For example, matcha green tea is lower in caffeine and contains an amazing property— ECGC—that can target breast cancer stem cells. Additionally, there are certain foods that contain melatonin naturally, such as tart cherries, goji berries, pistachios, mushrooms, and eggs.

Exercise Studies indicate that regular exercise can help you sleep better and may also directly increase melatonin levels. According to the Journal of Biological Rhythms, “exercise may have both rapid and delayed effects on human melatonin secretion. Exercise may acutely (i.e., within minutes) alter melatonin levels and result in a shift of the onset of nocturnal melatonin 12 to 24 hours later.” In other words, putting a daily exercise schedule into place can get your heart pumping, stretch your muscles and joints, and will help you sleep better too!

The Truth

about Abundance

By Eilis Philpott, Master Healer and Teacher

hen you think of abundance, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Is it money and financial wealth? Is it material possessions? Or is it something else? For many of us, abundance is an external phenomenon. It means having the money, belongings, and creature comforts that we require or desire in life. Unfortunately, this limited way of thinking about abundance may often lead to negative results. It does not help us solve our financial problems; rather, it may actually exacerbate them.

It’s Time to Flip the Script

What if, instead of thinking of abundance as external, we realize that it comes from within? In The Abundance Book, author John Randolph Price teaches readers to free our minds from limiting beliefs, encouraging us to think of money and other material desires or possessions as an outer symbol of our inner supply. In other words, what we need to create abundance in our lives is already within us—we just need to learn how to tap into it. If you want more money and prosperity in your life, you must shift from a consciousness of material possessions (effect) to a consciousness of spirituality (cause). Rethinking abundance means thinking differently and more abundantly in all areas of life and the world. Invite a consciousness shift to reclaim the mindset of abundance that is our natural inheritance. In his enlightening book, Price encourages us to shift our focus from money and material

possessions, instead concentrating on the abundance of Divine flowing from the Master Consciousness within you. Consciousness is the key to life, and nothing is impossible—not even the manifestation of unlimited wealth and financial independence. To flip the script and begin your journey, you must understand that you are the reason for where you are and where you will go. You must be in control of your own life—do not allow or rely on others to do it for you.

CBD: The Natural Sleep Remedy?

“Because of their history of poor sleep, people with insomnia may suffer from anxiety about getting inadequate sleep, which can then increase sleeplessness at night—a vicious cycle of anxiety and insomnia that can cause many more significant problems down the road.” —Jennifer Beach

E

xperts tell us a good night’s sleep is critical for overall well-being and ensures you feel rested and have energy for the next day. Effective sleep also contributes to memory formation, repairing of muscles and tissue, and helps to prevent illness. Unfortunately, a great many adults suffer chronically with not being able to fall asleep or to stay asleep. While there are many possible causes for this problem, there are two primary contributors to periodic or chronic insomnia: anxiety and body pain. And while many people who have trouble sleeping look to the wide variety of over-the-counter and prescription sleep aids that are available, cannabidiol (CBD) is becoming an increasingly popular—and more importantly, natural—approach for sleeping better.

How Does CBD Work in the Human Body?

To begin to understand how CBD aids sleep, it is important to learn how it works in the human body. In the early 90s, researchers discovered the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays a role in maintaining certain body functions, such as mood, appetite, immunity responses, metabolism, memory, sleep, and regulating circadian rhythms— essentially homeostasis, or balance in the body. Within the ECS is a network of cannabinoid receptors—including the two primary receptors, CB1 and CB2—in the brain and central nervous system. CBD works by interacting with a vast collection of cells and receptors throughout our bodies that make up the ECS. The ECS is made up of three core components: endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes.

Endocannabinoids

Endocannabinoids, also called endogenous cannabinoids, are molecules made by your body. Experts have identified two key endocannabinoids so far:

• anandamide (AEA) • 2-arachidonoylglyerol (2-AG) These endocannabinoids help keep internal functions running smoothly. Your body produces them as needed, making it difficult to know what typical levels are for each.

Endocannabinoid Receptors

Endocannabinoid receptors are found throughout your body. Endocannabinoids bind to them in order to signal that the ECS needs to act. There are two main endocannabinoid receptors: • CB1 receptors, which are mostly found in the central nervous system. • CB2 receptors, which are mostly found in your peripheral nervous system, especially immune cells. Endocannabinoids can bind to either receptor and the resulting effect depends on where the receptor is located, and which endocannabinoid is bound. For example, some endocannabinoids might target CB1 receptors in a spinal nerve to relieve pain, while others might bind to a CB2 receptor in your immune cells to signal that your body is experiencing inflammation.

Enzymes

Enzymes are responsible for breaking down endocannabinoids once they’ve carried out their function. There are two main enzymes responsible for this: • Fatty acid amide hydrolase, which breaks down AEA. • Monoacylglycerol acid lipase, which typically breaks down 2-AG.

How Does CBD Aid Restful Sleep?

Research suggests that the cannabinoid CBD may interact with specific receptors, potentially affecting the sleep/wake cycle. CBD reduces

Anxiety and CBD

While not a sleep disorder itself, anxiety can contribute to poor quality sleep, insufficient sleep, and sleep disorders. Because CBD calms the nervous system, early research indicates that CBD can be used to treat anxiety-related disorders successfully and naturally. Given the potential positive outcomes of CBD treating anxiety, it is believed that CBD may also help reduce the anxiety associated with insomnia.

REM Sleep Behavior Disorder and CBD

In REM sleep behavior disorder, patients verbalize and make aggressive movements during their rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep. The disorder is most common in older patients with neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

anxiety, which can be helpful in reducing sleep difficulties and improving sleep quality. CBD may increase overall sleep amounts and improve insomnia, according to research. CBD has been shown to reduce insomnia in people who suffer from chronic pain. Research on the effects CBD has on sleep disorders is still preliminary. Some people who use CBD for chronic pain report sleeping better. Currently, it is unclear whether these patients sleep better because of the pain relief or because CBD directly affects their sleep.

In a limited study of patients with Parkinson’s disease, CBD helped manage the REM sleep behavior disorder symptoms. Before taking CBD, the patients experienced disorder symptoms 2–7 times per week. After taking CBD, the symptoms occurred 0–1 per week. Although further studies are necessary, these initial results suggest CBD as a possible treatment for REM sleep behavior disorder.

Those who have excessive daytime sleepiness disorder struggle to stay awake during typical daytime hours. One possible solution for waking up on time and staying awake and alert may be CBD. Initial research shows that CBD functions as a wake-inducing drug. However, other studies suggest CBD functions as a sedating drug. Further research is needed to determine what doses and methods of CBD use may impact wakefulness and sleepiness.

How to Pick the Best CBD for Sleep

Purchasing a high-quality CBD product is essential. Because CBD is identified as a dietary supplement and not a medication, it is currently not regulated by the FDA for safety and purity. As a result, there is little in the way of regulations in place and unfortunately, there are many contaminated products on the market. So if you are looking at a cheap CBD product in your local gas station, you will want to reconsider until you have more information on the safety, efficacy, and purity of that particular product. So, how can you be sure you are purchasing a quality product? The proof of the purity and potency of a CBD product lies in the lab analysis conducted. Any product you purchase should have a corresponding independent lab analysis that details the components contained along with the levels of each component. Additionally, while many companies only test for potency, the product you choose should indicate in the lab analysis that no pesticides, fertilizers, metals, or other contaminants are present. Regular users of CBD products should also ensure they do not include extra sugar, colors, or additives. Always be sure to do your research and evaluate the source of your CBD product before purchasing.

What Is CBN and How Is It Different from CBD?

While the amazing benefits of using CBD are becoming increasingly common knowledge, considerably less well known is another highly beneficial component, a cannabinoid called cannabidol

(CBN). CBD and CBN are two of more than 100 types of natural cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. CBN is created by the aging and break down of the THC “psychoactive” component. It is about 25% less effective than THC and in lower doses does not provide a psychoactive effect. CBN has been found to be particularly helpful in the relief of inflammation and in helping to achieve a more restful sleep. Both CBD and CBN tend to bind with the CB2 receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in the central nervous system functions, one of which is sleep. Together, CBD and CBN are a very powerful duo for sleep and inflammation.

Ask Dana! Losing Sleep Over Your Investments or Personal Finances? By Dana R. Mascalo, CFP®, RLP®, AAMS®, C(k)P

“Financial security, retiring comfortably, investing with peace of mind, or even designing your estate plan are very important concepts that connect our finances with our personal lives and emotions, along with the uncertainty and ongoing change in the world around us.” —Dana R. Mascalo, CFP ®, RLP ®, AAMS ®, C(k)P

R

ecently, someone I’m close to confided that they were having trouble sleeping. The reason was clear to them—it was due to the recent stock market volatility and risks they were seeing all over the news as well as seeing their account values come down from peak levels reached within the last year. When I learned that Natural Nutmeg’s topics for this issue revolved around sleep and peace of mind, I was inspired to share some helpful hints and personal observations from the last 15 years of advising private clients with their investments and overall financial well-being. Each of us have our own relationship with money. Over the years, I’ve tried to drop into the unique perspectives out there and understand what it feels like, emotionally, for the many and varying clients and personalities I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to advise. Financial security, retiring comfortably, investing with peace of mind, or even designing your estate plan are very important concepts that connect our finances with our personal lives and emotions, along with the uncertainty and ongoing change in the world around us. To this end, the following are five areas where raising your financial awareness may help you shift

from an anxious mindset to a more comfortable and grounded perspective.

1

Time in the Market vs. Market Timing

As a holistic-minded individual, I must admit that I do keep a crystal ball at my desk, and citrine crystals abound in my home and office. When considering markets and investment allocations, though, relying on a hunch or emotional jitters is not recommended when deciding whether to go to cash or to invest. There have been countless statistical studies done around the concept of market timing. The sad truth is that it seldom works. Generally speaking, the longer an investor stays the course in the market, the probability of meeting their long-term investing goals increases.

2

Buy Low, Sell High

This concept is huge and ever-present…but is much easier said than done by your average investor. I have typically observed that when people feel most comfortable investing is when the market has been in a positive, upward trend. When people want to sell, it is generally during a sharp or prolonged market correction or decline.

Think about that concept for a few more moments. In a marketplace of other goods or services, during a sale (prices go down), people want to buy more—not the case with stocks for the average investor. The stock market is one of the rare instances that when prices go down people want to buy less, because of fear of more declines. The reverse is also noteworthy—in the stock market, the average investor is most eager to “get in” or buy when the price may be overvalued, or too expensive. As counterintuitive as it may seem, remember that an attractive entry point in markets may actually be when you feel most uncomfortable.

3

Human Behavior and Chasing Returns

Human Behavior and Anchoring

This also happens all the time! An anchoring bias in investing is when your mind holds onto a certain value point that has been reached and becomes more influential than it should with your decision making. For example: Rose retires with $1,000,000 invested. Over time, the value goes up and down and after two full years and positive markets, her statement says $1,300,000. Then, in a few months (the first quarter of year 3), the market goes down and her account value drops 8%. Timeframe January Year 1 December Year 1 December Year 2 March Year 3

Account Value $1,000,000 $1,090,000 $1,300,000 $1,196,000

NATURAL Nutmeg

Be aware of our natural tendencies to chase returns—this happens all the time. It occurs if, when others are making higher returns, you feel an urge to invest in something regardless of risk consideration. The news media also fuels this fire. Think about the bubbles in our recent history, such as the technology stock bubble in late 90s or the recent melt up we saw during COVID lockdowns in names like Netflix or Zoom—or even the meme stock culture craze and names like GameStop or AMC. The perception of risk fades during those momentum-driven periods. It is unfortunate that in such instances a conservative investor chasing returns will be more likely to buy high, then sell at a loss. Wild markets have occurred throughout history and will continue to occur, in some form or another, in the future. Remember to raise your awareness, stay calm, set goals, have a strategy, and seek prudent advice when you need it.

Seasoned investors may not be impacted emotionally by this at all. In their mind they are investing for the long term, and their average annual return is still quite positive since they started ($1,000,000 vs. $1,196,000 in just over two years). They are pleased. On the other hand, someone with an anchoring bias would see the $1.3 million mark and would only see that they are down from that. The loss is all they would feel emotionally.

Dollars vs. Percentages

As your account values grow, the actual dollars from a 2% move changes dramatically. For example, a smaller-sized downward move of 2% in a $100,000 account would make the account go down $2,000. When your savings include larger balances, though, the dollar amount move may seem very large, even though it is the same small-percentage downward move—on a million-dollar account, that same move would be $20,000. This is something to be aware of when your account value grows: more money = larger dollar moves—these are common, smaller fluctuations that are nothing to lose sleep over!

elf-confidence is SEXY! Too many people think that being self-confident means you are cocky and disrespectful. There are people like that—but I wouldn’t call those people self-confident. Self-confidence is a feeling of trust in one’s abilities, qualities, and judgment. To me, that means continually striving to make yourself a better person and enjoying the journey. You need self-confidence to follow your dreams and start a business or climb the career ladder. You need self-confidence to maintain a healthy lifestyle: eating right, exercising, practicing mindfulness, and reducing stress. You need self-confidence to train your mind to think positively, to be resilient, and to be your best friend and cheerleader. How do you become self-confident if you naturally aren’t? Well, there was a time when I was not very confident in myself at all. How did I change this? I started reading as many personal development books as I could get my hands on. I continued to push myself to do things that were out of my comfort zone, both physically and mentally, like traveling alone, rock climbing, and silent retreats. If I was afraid of something, I leaned into the fear instead of running from it. Eventually, I believed that I could accomplish anything if I put my mind to it, and I had real-world scenarios to prove it. I trusted myself. And each time I had a positive outcome, I gained more self-confidence. What will set you apart is your mindset and drive. That is how self-confidence is built.

Improving the Lives of Children through Rolfing®

“Kids quickly benefit from the lengthening and organization of the soft tissue because it feels right and, better yet, it feels good!” —Sharon Sklar, BFA, LMT, CAR

O

ver the last forty years, I have had Rolfing sessions with many children. I applaud the parents because they have insight and want the best for their kids—after all, kids probably aren’t hearing about Rolfing on the playground and insisting they come in! It is the parents who somehow find their way to Rolfing—either they are already clients of mine and know how effective it is, or they hear about it, believe it makes sense as a treatment option, and bring their children in to work with me. The variety of issues and length of treatment is very individualized. Until the age of nine, kids can have “spot” work—a couple of sessions to bring balance back after a bad fall, a sprained ankle, an elbow to the head while playing sports, and so on. After that age personality is developed within their bodies, so the full ten sessions of Rolfing are in order. The structural imbalances from years of sitting improperly, sports injuries, accidents causing a broken bone or bones—all these cause problems both while they’re happening and set kids up for problems down the road as well.

Some Simple Sessions Can Save the Day I once worked on a client’s one-year-old son who was having a hard time walking. He spent much time on his toes and couldn’t find balance. We spent a few minutes lengthening his heels and she called me the very next day to tell me he was walking properly and confidently. He simply needed the input that his heels could extend, and the rest came naturally. In another instance, I worked on a friend’s little boy whose feet were very turned out, so much so that he couldn’t stand. We did a few sessions, redirected his pelvis and all the connective tissue, and poof! He was standing, balancing, and walking within days.

Benefits of the Ten-Session Series

If there is serious structural change needed and the issues are of a chronic nature, the ten sessions are magical for a child. I’ve seen kids

mature, shift, and blossom right before my eyes. In addition to the direct hands-on bodywork, the sessions teach us how to live more fully in our bodies after we come out of balance due to an accident, chronic postural issues, or surgery. As I see it, the magic of Rolfing is to get back to neutral and allow the body to flow and move more easily. Kids quickly benefit from the lengthening and organization of the soft tissue because it feels right and, better yet, it feels good! Over time, all the fascial adhesions of soft tissue injuries accumulate and begin to restrict the way the muscles move. This translates to stiffness, lack of range of motion, poor balance, and the inability to feel flexible or be able to stretch and feel lift. Left unchecked, this can cause a child to develop harmful patterns of movement that can last a lifetime, potentially leading to stressful holding patterns, unhealthy habits, and perhaps even chronic pain.

The Truth Behind the Magic of Rolfing

The process of Rolfing is done by direct manipulation to the connective tissue or soft tissue—everything but the bone. If Billy had badly twisted an ankle playing soccer, we are grateful that at least nothing was broken. If there isn’t blood or a major break, we tend to think nothing is so bad that a few days off that ankle won’t fix. In reality, however, if Billy turned his ankle with enough force to fall and limp around, chances are there is an imbalance brewing. Left untreated, this ankle twist can cause the knee above to compensate and over time perhaps even cause the whole pelvis to shift to further accommodate the imbalance of the injury. In my practice, I have had countless clients reporting that an injury from childhood was the onset of an issue that twenty or thirty years later they are now trying to fix, presenting either as intermittent pain or chronic flare-ups. Kids are lucky—they can be treated right away and have less time to collect all the scar tissue and abuse that we as adults endure.

A Revolutionary Way to Burn Fat & Build Muscle

NATURAL Nutmeg

Many children come in with scoliosis, a side-toside twisting of the spinal column. In severe cases, a pediatrician might prescribe a brace, which is worn eighteen or more hours a day to try to control the shifting body. Rolfing addresses this issue from the standpoint that bones don’t move themselves; rather, it is the soft tissue—muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia (the tissue that weaves the body together) that moves the bones. Bone is living tissue that changes more slowly than the soft tissue, which can have immediate results—if the soft tissue matrix is balanced, the body stops being pulled out of alignment. The entire body is involved in this imbalance, not just the back muscles and associated soft tissue. The psoas, a structurally important inner abdominal muscle, often holds the key to success in regaining balance. Years ago, a client brought in her son—a shy, tall (yet slouchy), slender, thirteen-year-old boy who had been diagnosed with scoliosis. He was seen at the local children’s hospital and prescribed a brace as treatment. His mom knew our Rolfing work addressed whole-body balance and wanted that for her son. He responded very well to the sessions, which complemented and gave more direction to the bracing. A few years later I saw him again, this time for advanced Rolfing (a five-session series that goes to a deeper level), which took his treatment to the next level and really straightened him out. He had become a tall, slender, more confident young man with only slight imbalances that were hardly noticeable. It is important to really look at your kids, watch for chronic shifting onto one leg or obvious asymmetries, listen to their complaints, and address injuries with a concerned eye. Intervention at a young age can alleviate more significant issues later. Keep an open mind and know that there is help beyond the usual treatment.

Fighting Lyme Disease with Acupuncture By Guljan Nurmuradova, LAc

JULY / AUGUST 2022

36 “Traditional Chinese Medicine— TCM—methods can be helpful during all three stages of Lyme.” —Guljan Nurmuradova, LAc

S

ummer is here! Warm, sunny days; cool, comfy nights; more time spent outdoors… introducing the potential for a greater exposure to tick bites. Tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme disease can make the fun of summer for you, your children, and your pets come to a screeching halt. Don’t let those little carriers create a big problem for your family’s good time.

A Little Critter with a Big Impact

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection transmitted by ticks—small, parasitic, spider-like creatures who feed on the blood of their host. If a tick is infected with a disease, it can infect the person or animal it bites. Lyme disease, which is caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium, is just one of several infectious diseases that ticks can spread. The early symptoms of Lyme disease can feel like a flu, complete with fever, fatigue and aches and pains. Although common with Lyme, not everyone infected will have the characteristic “bullseye” rash that develops around the site of the tick bite. When treated promptly with antibiotics, most cases of Lyme disease will resolve within a few weeks. However, due to its flu-like symptoms Lyme disease is often not diagnosed right away, and if it goes undetected, chronic problems can. Once the bacteria have spread throughout the body, even an extended course of antibiotics may not be able to get rid of it initially. Long-term Lyme symptoms may appear similar to those of

other chronic inflammatory, autoimmune, or neurological conditions such as fibromyalgia, Bell’s palsy, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, or PTSD. In extreme cases, Lyme disease may cause shoulder, hip, and knee pain; fatigue; and other symptoms so severe that people can’t go about their regular daily routine.

Stages of Lyme Disease

When early detection occurs, the Western medical approach of using antibiotics can often resolve Lyme disease within a few to several weeks. However, if the infectious disease is not found soon enough, Lyme disease will progress to more advanced stages. Traditional Chinese Medicine—TCM—methods can be helpful during all three stages of Lyme.

1

First-Stage Lyme Within the first few weeks of the infection and with early detection, antibiotics can be very helpful, working rather well to stop the spread of the bacteria. However, because Lyme disease is often misdiagnosed, many people do not receive this treatment soon enough. During this phase, the symptoms are akin to those of the flu, including chills, fatigue, and heaviness in the limbs, and as the infection moves in deeper it can cause the skin rash or hives. TCM treatment during the first stage will focus on relieving heat and detoxifying the body to rid it of infection.

2

Second-Stage If the spread of bacteria-causing Lyme disease is not halted quickly, it begins to affect the organs and blood. The central nervous system and heart can become infected, and these infections can last for months. If they are not addressed, they can develop into the third phase.

Dealing with a complicated illness like Lyme disease is challenging, and a process of discovery and commitment may be necessary. Working with a provider of traditional Chinese medicine gives patients the benefits of a multi-faceted, holistic way of addressing multiple symptoms, both physical and emotional. Acupuncture for infectious diseases such as Lyme considers each patient’s individual concerns and addresses the many complex symptoms of Lyme disease.

Working with our team you can uncover the root cause of your illness and create a lifestyle plan to get you healthy and prevent more serious illness.

NATURAL Nutmeg

Advanced-Stage Lyme Disease In this advanced stage, a person may begin to feel joint aches and arthritis-like symptoms. The body’s blood and Qi—the life force behind TCM— become deficient and as the infection drags on, this can cause joint, skin, and nerve damage. Ongoing Qi and blood deficiency and stagnation can cause fatigue, dizziness, insomnia, and memory loss. At this stage, treatment with acupuncture and herbs will work to help boost the Qi, relieve heat and inflammation, and strengthen the entire immune system.

hy do we get up every morning? This is a question we all consider at certain points in our lives. We may have work, family, or other obligations, or we simply may feel rested and ready to start the day. But where is that passion in your gut, the fire in your heart, the sparkle in your eye, that brings you forward into the day? This is something I have always pondered but finally took as my life’s mission almost 10 years ago. Finding my purpose, or as the Japanese call it, my ikigai, consumed me as I searched for the reason I had made my life decisions: why I went to work, why I exercised, why I was drawn to the same hobbies my entire life, and why certain studies drew me in. The search began one morning when I woke up, drove to work, and realized my life had become very routine. Sleep—work—sleep during the week; errands and such on the weekends. It was a lifestyle that had suddenly become unsustainable. There was a voice inside me that was growing louder and more insistent, asking simply, “Why?” Ikigai is, in basic terms, the reason we get up in the morning. It is about finding passion, purpose, and practicality all at the same time. Ikigai is your reason to live, your purpose, from a spiritual perspective but grounded in everyday life.

Explore Your Essence

While I believe we all have a purpose here, I also believe it is not necessarily in the label we assign to ourselves (wife, mother, lawyer, doctor, etc.). Rather, it is how we show up in the world. As energetic, spiritual beings, what essence do we bring forth? And how do we do that in a practical, grounded way?

When I realized it wasn’t what I did at my job that I enjoyed but rather how I did my job, how I led and inspired others, mentoring and coaching for staff members and colleagues, the pieces started to fall together. It calls to mind the quote, “People will not remember what you did, but they will remember how you made them feel.”

The Path and the Process

How do we get to this space, though? It is a process, one that I have been working through for years and that continues to unfold. With each step, the path is a bit clearer. Many techniques and practices contribute to the unfolding: mindfulness, meditation, conscious awareness, and self-compassion, all supported by modalities that bring us closer to our authentic selves, our essence, our soul. Practices that ebb and flow with time, constant learning and self-discovery, and approaching the day with curiosity and openness all widen and help clear the path to ikigai. This is the work that fulfills me, not only within myself but with all of my clients. There is a common thread; we are all seeking meaning and purpose. It does not have to be grand, but we all search for something to carry us through the times in our lives when we need to dive deep and keep going, and the times that are full of joy and hope. Finding your ikigai takes honesty, courage, patience, and awareness. It is the journey of our lives and the breath of our soul.
