PUBLISHER'SLETTER One thing my father taught me that I’ll never forget and has served me well was to always focus on my strengths. He would say that those who make the greatest progress in achieving their goals share one common characteristic: they identify and focus on their core strengths. Your core strengths are composed of a set of habits and talents that you have been developing all your life. When you feel most successful, you are combining these special talents with your intelligence and applying them to what you really care about. I call this building a strengths awareness.

So why should you identify and focus on your strengths? Spending more time doing the things that you love to do and are great at brings you increased energy, increased confidence, and the ability to create more value for others, which will lead to more productive relationships. Each of us is completely unique and if we are to give a gift to the world, it will have to come out of our own experience and fulfillment of our core strengths.

Identifying your core strengths is often difficult. Since these talents come so easily to you, you most likely find it hard to see them as strengths. Start by doing this simple exercise: Think of someone who you deeply admire, a parent, friend, mentor or anyone who has made an impact on your life. List three characteristics or traits that you respect and admire in this person. Do this now, before reading any further – even if you can only come up with one or two characteristics.

Now what you may not realize is that we are all mirrors of each other. You, in fact, have each of the traits that you so admire in your friend or parent or mentor. Your first thought after reading this may be, “No, that can’t be true. The reason I admire that in that person is because he or she is so much better at it than I am and I aspire to be that way.” Sound familiar? Well, the truth is that if you didn’t have these traits that you admire in your friend, you would not be able to recognize them in another. Chew on that for awhile! Difficult to grasp, but take some time to think about it and you’ll discover it makes perfect sense.

If you are interested in learning more about this and how to develop a strengths awareness, I recommend reading, “Breaking the Rules”, by Kurt Wright. This exercise was adopted from his book and it’s truly an amazing read. He theorizes that we don’t really have weaknesses – that’s it is a term made up by humans and that our weaknesses are really just our smaller strengths.

Some other ways to recognize your strengths are to start thinking about the things that you have a passion for and can do easily. Often, these are also the activities that bring you the best results. If you receive praise or thanks for something and your gut reaction is “really, it was nothing,” it’s probably a sign that you were using your core strengths.

Once you identify these strengths, begin to think about improvements you can make that will free you up to focus on them more. Even if you start by eliminating those activities at which you are incompetent or only competent, your productivity will increase immediately. It is your passion for your core strengths that will allow you to continually improve your capabilities, leading to more and more opportunities and success.

THE BUZZ Hill-Stead Museum’s 2014 Sunken Garden Poetry Festival Lineup Announced

ill-Stead Museum is thrilled to announce the fantastic lineup of poets scheduled for the 2014 Sunken Garden Poetry Festival, which is set to open on June 11 and conclude August 6 in the Museum’s historic and beautiful Sunken Garden. This summer’s Festival will feature five outstanding and award-winning headlining poets, four Connecticut-based opening poets, live music, the winner of the Sunken Garden Poetry Prize, and the winners of the Fresh Voices Poetry Competition.

The Sunken Garden Poetry Festival is presented with generous support from Connecticut Humanities. Additional support comes from The Beekley Center for Breast Health & Wellness at Bristol Hospital, Duncaster Retirement Community, and SKY Investment Group. The festival opens on June 11 with National Book Award finalist Kevin Young.

Schedule: Gates open at 4:30pm; opening poet begins at 6pm; music begins at 6:30; headlining poet begins at 7:25pm. Preludes – pre-performance talk on featured poet - 5-5:30pm (all evenings except August 6).

From Patient To Respant

U

nfortunately doctors and health professionals, in general, do not study success. We are far more likely to consider an unexpected recovery to be due to the treatment or a spontaneous remission. However, I have learned from my experience with patients and by asking them, “Why didn’t you die when you were supposed to?” that they always had a story to tell. I can recall, as an intern, realizing that the seniors, with hip fractures, who were noisy and demanding didn’t develop pneumonia and die while the submissive, quiet seniors who never raised their voice or caused a problem had a much higher mortality rate.

By speaking up and becoming a character or problem patient you become identified as a person and not by your room number or disease and, therefore, are far less likely to have a fatal or non-fatal medical error made while being cared for. The word patient derives its meaning from submissive sufferer. That is not a good thing to be when hospitalized or receiving medical treatment of any kind. You need to be a respant, or responsible participant if you want to heal and survive.

We now know from studies how one’s emotions and personality affect survival rates. I was criticized years ago for speaking about many things; no one had researched because no one believed they made sense, which are now scientific. Simple things like laughter affecting the survival of cancer patients and loneliness affecting the genes which control immune function are now proven to be true by studies. The fact that women live longer than men and married men live longer than single men with the same cancers, is not about female hormones or sleeping with them, but about relationships and

meaning in your life. Survival behavior and an immune competent personality are not an accident or luck.

Those in the mental health field are far more likely to be aware of this because of what they see happen to their patients. When people have a sense of meaning in their life, express anger and emotions appropriately in defense of themselves, ask for help from family and friends, participate in their health care decisions, say no to what they choose not to do, find time to do what they enjoy and to play, use their feelings to help them to heal their lives and do not live a role but an authentic life they will always do better than expected. I would add that a spiritual faith and not seeing the disease as God punishing them also plays a role, as well as, their desire and intention to survive.

Disease is a loss of health, not punishment, and your health is to be looked for as you would seek to find your lost car keys.

I found a large part of the problem was that people were afraid to take responsibility and participate because if they didn’t get well that would mean they were a failure. Decades ago I invited one hundred cancer patients to attend a support group and live a longer better life.

I expected them to bring friends and family members and that I would have hundreds of people to deal with. Less than a dozen women showed up for the first meeting. I realized I did not know the people I was caring for and their will to live. If you do not grow up with parents who love you and give you mottoes to live by and teachers, clergy and other authority figures who love and respect you then you are into guilt, shame, blame, addictions and self destructive behavior.

Those who showed up became labeled exceptional cancer patients because they were a minority but what they reveal to us is our poten-

tial. Difficult patients do not die when they are supposed to. Statistics do not determine their outcome or results. Those with inspiration who transform their lives and rebirth themselves give their bodies live messages and the body then does the best it can for them. Our bodies love us but if we do not love our life and bodies it sees illness and death as a way to be free of our afflictions. Monday morning supports that with more heart attacks, strokes, illnesses and suicides. When you let an MD, or Medical Deity, determine whether you live or die you are giving away your power. I have seen people, whose hope was taken away by doctors, commit suicide or go home, climb into bed and die. I have also seen others get damn angry at their doctors and go on to survive for many years or be cured of their disease.

You have to start with a belief in yourself and faith in all the things you incorporate into your life and choose as therapy. I know people who have left their troubles to God and been cured of cancer. A patient of mine, who was a landscaper, after surgery refused treatment for his cancer because it was springtime and he wanted to go home and make the world beautiful before he died.

He lived to be ninety-four and became my teacher. The mind is indeed a powerful thing and not emphasized enough in the medical information we receive during our training.

We do not receive a true medical education because it does not contain the tools to

help people with their life experience. It is focused on disease and prescribing for them.

We do not ask patients how may I help you but rather what is your chief complaint and then we prescribe for them without knowing their life story and why they might be sick at that time..

The mind and body are a unit and communicate with each other. I have yet to meet a medical student who has been told that Carl Jung interpreted a dream and correctly diagnosed a brain tumor. I have had the same experience using dreams and drawings by patients to help me guide them to the proper diagnosis and treatment. When patients become empowered they do not just respond from their intellect but use their intuition too.

There are times people do not want chemotherapy and yet draw a beautiful picture of it while those receiving it draw the devil giving them poison. It is not hard to know who will have more side effects. When you are submissive and let others prescribe for you, you are in trouble. One young woman refused further treatment and when she drew a picture for me she labeled herself as bald, ugly and horrible and the cancer is crying and saying help me because it is going though the same hell she is. She is sticking a spear in her doctor because of what his treatment did to her.

I know a young man who had a high powered water gun in his hospital room and whenever anyone intruded upon his privacy

he drenched them. The nurses and intern respected him for it and when he died his water gun became a gift to empower other children.

I created a Siegel Kit for all hospitalized patients. In it are a water gun, noisemaker, magic marker and vital signs. The water gun you know about. The magic marker is for anyone going to the operating room to write cut here on one side and not this one stupid on the other. The noisemaker is to get attention when you need it. To quote several patients, “You are guaranteed an hour of uninterrupted silence if you push the call button.” I know a woman who would be dead today if she didn’t have a roommate who went for help when no one responded to her pushing her call button while she was choking on food she had aspirated. The vital signs are not about your pulse, blood pressure, temperature and respiratory rate but about your needs and desires. These are signs you hang on your hospital room door or over your bed telling people what your needs are and how you want to be treated. I also recommend hanging your baby pictures there too. So when people ask who the cute kid is you answer, “It’s me.”

Last but not least one must also choose the therapy you believe in and you can reprogram your mind and body through guided imagery if there are any conflicts. I know of a case where, after repairing the radiation therapy machine, the radioactive material was not replaced.

So for one month people were not being treated and yet the radiation therapist did not know this until their routine inspection of the machine was done a month later. He was telling me how terrible he felt about not treating anyone for a month when I said, “You’d have to be an idiot to not know you weren’t treating anyone. So obviously people had side effects and their tumors shrinking because they thought they were being treated.” His response, “Oh my God you’re right.”

That is why I work at deceiving people into health by working with their beliefs and communicating with them in a positive way rather than listing all the side effects they will have and none of the advantages of therapy. Doctors need training in communication and hypnotic techniques. Wordswordswords can become swordswordswords. We can kill or cure with words or scalpels. That is why patients need to be respants and keep their power and feel free to change doctors and criticize them in a constructive way. The best doctors are criticized by patients, nurses and family. Why? Because they do not make excuses and learn from their mistakes. Believe me if your doctor or their loved ones have suffered a major illness they are no longer a spectator or tourist. They are now a native and understand the experience and are a much better health care provider. So love yourself, take responsibility for and participate in your life and state of health. This is not about avoiding dying but about living and its beneficial side effects.

What Do Men Really Want?

I

f you’re thinking the answer is sex, think again. It’s not just sex.

It’s freedom. If we men admit the truth, we are driven by freedom more than anything else. We want the freedom to do what we want, when we want and where we want. We want the freedom to do our own thing at the time of our choosing. We pursue careers and business with a vengeance in order to afford ourselves this perception of freedom, which includes having abundance as well as “toys” or hobbies that allow us to tap into a stress-free state. Ultimately, we want to have to answer to no one. At least that’s the big plan.

Our desire to be free sometimes gets in the way of love because we don’t have the same longing for deep connection that women typically do. When we aren’t physically or emotionally available it can create lots of uncertainty and women sometimes question our commitment to the relationship when we seem “distant.”

Now back to sex. Yes, sometimes it seems like we want sex more than anything, and maybe there is some truth to that. We do want sex and a lot of it. More so, though, we want to be appreciated for what we bring to the relationship. We want to be acknowledged for our work and our sacrifices for the family, as well as our efforts to make you happy. We will feel like a failure if we cannot.

Appreciation is Paramount Here’s what you really need to know. Lack of appreciation is by far the single biggest complaint that I hear from men in my private coaching practice. I hear it constantly. I have heard it from men for more than 20 years. It grinds us down over time and can build a sense of bitterness about you. The interesting thing is we will likely never tell you that’s what we need. We have no idea how to do that in a way that doesn’t make us look like wimps. It’s difficult for most of us to even admit that we need that acknowledgement, but if it isn’t there the bitter feelings build.

This is very real. And you should know in case you want to do something about it to help solidify the relationship. It’s your choice, it’s up to you; we really can’t ask you in a way that makes us feel manly. We do want to feel respected, but that’s just another form of appreciation. That’s not the thing we are after.

Now is Good Now you are probably thinking, “I do appreciate my man, but I want to be appreciated too.” Usually this indicates that you are waiting for him to do something more for you first. And then you imagine that you would shower him with your sincere appreciation.

Is that really true? Why are you holding back?

Maybe you think he owes you, or that you are too hurt from something he said or did to want to be grateful for him being such a big part of your life. Do you have a story about him that is keeping you from giving fully?

Are you feeling empty because of him, or is it something else and you blame him because it’s easier than looking inside of yourself? We all have reasons why we fail to do the little things that would make the greatest difference.

How to Make Sure He Knows Frequently, despite what women might be saying that they are doing for their men, it is not being felt as appreciation. I have heard dozens and dozens of women say that they are indeed showing their men how grateful and appreciative they are. Whatever it is they are doing, it doesn’t seem to be working very effectively because he isn’t feeling it, and that is the only true litmus test.

He wants to feel appreciated and valued and often doesn’t.

Worse, he can feel taken for granted. Sometimes he even feels used and unimportant in your hectic life. When was the last time you went out of your way to show him how much you appreciate him?

According to a survey of 75,000 people worldwide by AOL/ Huffington Post, men feel criticized at almost double the rate of women. Complaining about us to your girlfriends does not increase your ability to see the good things that we do for you. To add to that, the media today has often made a mockery of men in ads portraying them as bumbling, clueless and weak. It’s easy to appreciate your man. It’s also very easy not to do.

Ask yourself…

• How do you show your man respect?

• What do you specifically admire about him?

• Have you ever told him how proud you are of him?

• Have you ever told him how grateful you are to have him in your life?

• Do you ever thank him for his hard work for the family, even if you think you are working harder?

• Do you acknowledge him and/or his accomplishments in front of your children, family or friends?

*If you are a man reading this, you can certainly do any and all of these things for the woman in your life and you should. There is nothing preventing you from stepping up here. So go ahead.

Again, things are easy to do and easy not to do. If you are caught up in past hurts or disappointments this idea might even seem painful. Sometimes it just takes a little courage to make any relationship great. And you have that in abundance. You also have so much more power than you realize to elevate the relationship by doing these little things.

Many women have incredible careers today and are as equally driven to succeed as any man. For the most part, men aren’t attracted to the director (in charge) energy that we often experience because you are still in work mode when you are home with us. This is also true when you are pre-occupied with household responsibilities, or child care duties, or the “todo-list” mindset. This serious get things done energy has its time and place. We Both Need Downtime We often need to do mindless activities like clicking the remote from channel to channel on the tv, or surfing the net for nonsense, or working on a favorite hobby or project of ours, or just hanging out with a buddy talking about nothing. Improving Bone Density with Exercise and Nutrition

B

one. Often we think of it as a solid, unchanging part of our body (once we reach our full height). However, it is so much more. Bone is in a constant state of flux. Two types of cells, osteoblasts and osteoclasts, serve to regulate the building and breakdown of bone tissue. Osteoblasts build bone up in response to demands such as running, squatting and jumping. Osteoclasts, on the other hand, break bone down, which allows new bone to grow and allows minerals (such as calcium) that are stored in bone to normalize depleted blood levels. In fact, spongy bone is completely replaced every three to four years and compact bone every ten years.

Peak Bone Mass Peak bone mass is generally achieved around age 18 for girls and around age 20 for boys. However, bone mass may continue to increase up through age 30. While genetics certainly play a role in how much bone mass a person may have, lifestyle also is a vital component. Genetically, males will generally have a higher peak bone mass than females. African Americans usually have higher peak bone mass than Caucasians and Asians. Beyond these genetic influencers, how much we move and what we eat generally determine how much bone mass we develop.

Our bodies are highly adaptive to whatever stresses we place on them. Therefore, when we watch television, play video games, and text our friends, rather than being active, our body does not place its energy into building up our bones. Particularly during childhood it is incredibly important for children to run, jump, and play. This forces the body to adapt to these stressors by developing more bone mass. As a young child skips rope, plays a game of hop scotch, or runs around playing tag these weight-bearing exercises stimulate osteoblast activity, mechanically stressing the bone. The result is increased bone tissue which allows the bones to withstand the force of these playtime activities. So, when we keep our children indoors and don’t let them go out and play we negatively influence the amount of peak bone mass that will develop.

Nutrition also has a strong impact on bone development. In order for bone to develop we require adequate calcium, vitamin D, protein, phosphorous (most of us get more than enough of this

mineral), vitamin K, vitamin C, B vitamins, vitamin E, copper, magnesium, potassium, iron, boron, zinc, manganese, and the essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6. Those who are malnourished, whether from lack of food availability, chronic disease, or eating disorders, will also have suboptimal bone development.

Hormonal Influencers Hormones are one of the main regulators of bone remodeling. In childhood, human growth hormone helps to stimulate bone growth by acting on the epiphyseal plate (growth plate). This process is also controlled by the thyroid hormone thyroxine, which causes this process to stop once full height is reached. The sex hormones (estrogen and testosterone) are incredibly important for bone health.

They help to prevent the cellular death of osteoblasts and stimulate osteoblast activity, allowing for increased calcium deposition in bone. These hormones also help to cause cell death to osteoclasts preventing bone breakdown.

The Thyroid, Parathyroid, and Bone Mass The thyroid and parathyroid glands work together to balance bone mass. Calcitonin from the thyroid is released with increasing blood calcium levels causing osteoblasts to build up bone. Conversely, parathyroid hormone is secreted as blood calcium levels decrease and causes osteoclasts to break down bone and release calcium into the blood stream.

Osteopenia/Osteoporosis Osteopenia is defined as the initial stage of bone loss where bone mineral density ranges between -1.0 and -2.5 as measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Normal BMD is -1.0 or greater. Osteopenia is not actually considered a diagnosis, but rather low bone mineral density that is not yet considered osteoporosis.

Women over 65 and men over 70 years of age should be screened to determine bone density levels.

Once BMD is -2.5 or less osteoporosis may be diagnosed. There are two main types of osteoporosis. Type I osteoporosis is generwww.NaturalNutmeg.com

ally seen in postmenopausal women between the ages of 51 and 75 years of age. This type is strongly influenced by declining levels of estrogen that can accelerate bone loss. Additionally, the aging process also causes decreased vitamin D levels and poor absorption of calcium. Usually this form of osteoporosis leads to spinal and wrist fractures. Type II osteoporosis may be found in both men and women over the age of 70. Decreased osteoblast (bone-building cells) activity, calcium absorption, vitamin D creation, and levels of the hormone calcitonin (which inhibits bone breakdown) all contribute to this form of osteoporosis.

Risk factors for osteoporosis include: • Low bone mineral density • Family history • Being female • Age 65 or older • Early menopause • Amenorrhea (absence of the menstrual period) for one year or more • Glucocorticoid therapy for three months or longer • Low calcium and vitamin D levels • Alcoholism • Cigarette smoker • Physical inactivity • Low body weight (below 127 pounds)

Exercise and Osteoporosis The best exercise option for both the prevention of osteoporosis and for helping to maintain bone mass after diagnosis is weightbearing exercise. For those with normal bone mass, high-impact activities such as jumping and heavy resistance training (use repetitions of 5 to 12) are far more effective than walking, biking, swimming, and other low-impact activities.

For those with osteopenia or osteoporosis, exercise should still be used to help prevent further bone deterioration. Use of weightbearing cardiovascular exercise such as walking and stair climbing can be performed three to five times per week. Resistance training,

Flexibility exercises are important to preserve and improve joint function which may decline in osteoporosis. It is important to avoid stretches and movements that require excessive bending of the spine or twisting of the spine, knee, hip, and shoulder. Explosive and twisting movements overstress the osteoporotic skeletal system which may not be able to withstand such force. Balance training (such as a one-leg stance) can be used to help prevent falls that may cause fractures.

Nutrition and Osteoporosis

Among the most important nutrients for bone health is vitamin D. This essential vitamin helps to increase blood levels of calcium and phosphorus by promoting their absorption. In Connecticut, most of us receive so little direct sunlight most of the year that we become vitamin D deficient. The Linus Pauling Institute for micronutrients recommends that even healthy individuals take 2,000 IUs of vitamin D3 on a daily basis.

Calcium is probably the most common nutrient associated with bone health. While calcium supplementation may certainly help bone health, dietary intake is always best. For those who choose to avoid dairy, calcium is found in dark leafy greens; pinto, red, and white beans; tofu; and rhubarb. Supplemental calcium should be taken in doses of 500 mg or less at one time to optimize absorption.

Use of magnesium with calcium supplements also may help absorption.

Breaking Through Emotional Barriers with Movement

E

motions naturally ebb and flow.

When we stop that ebb and flow, we get trapped in cycles of pain, which manifest physically in the body, or mentally, as intense unresolved emotion, constantly coming up but never moving out. The physical pain could cause someone to see a host of doctors and experts, most of whom will have no explanation, and who may not even believe the pain is real. Emotional intensity could interfere with jobs, relationships, happiness and well-being.

Unresolved Emotional Issues What I’ve seen time and again, both in my personal yoga practice and with my oneon-one yoga clients, is that the explanation for the manifestation of chronic pain is most likely an unresolved emotional issue.

It also could be an injury that doctors say should be healed and shouldn’t be causing pain, but still is, because of the nature of how that injury was acquired. More often

than not, there is a distinct connection between emotions and injuries, especially in a person who has a history of unresolved issues. A fall from being pushed in a malicious way will manifest in the body differently than a fall from an accidental trip on a peaceful, carefree day.

Through neuroscience, we learn that our reality is interpreted by our senses. Data from our surrounding environment is processed to formulate our current experience.

The left side of brain sorts and organizes this information, drawing on stored information from the past, woven together to create the perception of our current reality. The brain learns from the past and attempts to predict what will happen next. When the past events we draw from are traumatic or painful, those come to the surface and shape the view of our current experience, sometimes creating emotional or physical pain that is not really present in that moment.

processing our experience, we ultimately store the data of our current reality in our cells, carrying a lifetime of experiences with us at all times.

Trauma’s Many Forms Past trauma plays a huge role in shaping our present-moment experience, especially when it comes from emotional issues manifesting as physical pain. Trauma doesn’t need to be a horrific experience or terrifying series of events to create a lasting effect on us and shape who we are, even changing our personality structure.

On the contrary, throughout our lives, we are exposed to many different, subtler types of trauma, such as witnessing an accident, seeing a loved one injured, or suffering an injury ourselves. Even negative reinforcement, bullying, and emotional or verbal abuse can be considered trauma.

Releasing Trauma If the trauma isn’t released at the time of the experience or shortly after its occurrence, it stays trapped in the nervous system.

To avoid reliving trauma and to properly release it, we must look to movement.

Connecting to the physical body through movement quiets the processing and organizing left side of the brain. This quiet allows the right side of the brain, which is responsible for consciousness and present-moment awareness, to awaken.

Through conscious movement and breath, we journey into the physical body, thereby unlocking the emotional body. More importantly, we have the ability to release

intense emotions and past traumas from the nervous system, no matter how subtle or complex they may be.

Individuals tend to hold certain areas of their body, especially when they are in pain or protecting a past injury. I can generally tell from this holding where areas of pain and tightening are. Where the person is holding is something that tells me more about what kind of trauma or intense emotions they’re hanging on to, how it has shaped their personality, and how it limits them physically and emotionally on a day-to-day basis. This holding almost always correlates to an imbalanced energy center—also known as chakra—in the body.

When we have deficiencies and excesses in the root chakra energy center, it manifests as pain in the lower extremities. The root chakra is responsible for our body image, our sense of grounding, trust, health, and our home, family and prosperity. A balanced root chakra results in health, vitality, ability to establish appropriate boundaries, and feelings of safety, security, relaxation, stillness, and stability. When our emotional issues are cleared out of this energy center, we feel grounded and comfortable in the body, and feel the right to be alive. My client, suffering from a deficient root chakra, experienced a disconnection from her body. She was fearful, anxious, and restless, struggling to make ends meet and had difficulty establishing healthy boundaries in relationships.

She protected her knee when she walked with a subtle limp and rounded her shoulders, closing in on herself, closing off her heart. A clear deficiency in her root chakra, we worked on reconnecting with her body, especially her lower extremities. We also worked on opening up her chest and shoulders, counteracting her hunched posture.

Opening up the front body, strengthening legs, grounding, connection to earth and literally “standing on her own two feet,” we rebuilt stability that had been lost long ago. The releasing of fear provided insights about the intense unresolved emotions that were coming up as a result of the time spent with family and her father’s failing health. She was able to witness them and release them in a safe and gradual way, working them out of her cells.

Her survival was no longer threatened; anxiety and restlessness started to slowly dissipate. As the emotional issues were identified and released, the deficiency in the chakra came into balance. Stress declined, self-esteem returned, digestion, immune function and posture improved, she was able to set appropriate boundaries, and pain in the knee and hip dramatically lessened. Releasing emotion and movement through her continual yoga practice gave her strength, pain relief and healing.

Please keep in mind, this process was very gradual—one subtle opening after another. It’s something that is best practiced compassionately, not forcefully, and in a supportive environment.

Emotions, experiences, images, thoughts, and memories come up for us because they are ready to move out. Movement of the body is a viable and effective way to let them pass. Holding space and remaining present, we are able to use movement and the breath to gently soften and compassionately let go. Forms of release vary but can include subtle shaking, the chills, a softening of a tight muscle, crying or even laughter.

It’s our willingness to practice and explore in the here-and-now that can ultimately free us from our past and in some cases, our pain.

The Importance of an Accurate Diagnosis: PCOS, UTIs and IC

W

ords like ovaries, bladder, and urinary tract don’t usually come up in conversation. Women are far more likely to discuss annoyances like PMS, cramps, and missed periods before they delve into details about urinary tract infections (UTIs), interstitial cystitis (IC) or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Too often, women are misdiagnosed, not diagnosed, or just live silently with the discomfort caused by these diseases and infections.

It is this lack of discussion about these subjects that made me want to offer information on integrative alternatives for relief in the new book “Essential Remedies for Wornen’s Health” published by Natural Nutmeg Press. Here are excerpts from three sections on these ‘personal’ issues.

ulcers can be present. The end result is pelvic discomfort and a breakdown in the entire mechanism that supports proper, pain-free urination. Symptoms often start in women in their mid 20s through their 40s and can vacillate for years from flare-ups to remission.

Relief can be elusive for some, but there are many strategies, both integrative and allopathic, that I have seen bring relief to patients in my practice. Treatment options usually involve diet and fluid modifications, oral medications, intravesical therapy (direct application of medication on the bladder) or, as a last resort, surgery. The difficulty is finding the group of solutions that works for the individual patient, coupled with committing the time to stay on a new regimen, since relief can sometimes come slowly.

Natural Solutions for UTIs

As a practitioner, the most compelling and concerning aspect of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is how often it is misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all. A stunningly high percentage of the patients I’ve treated say they wish they had been diagnosed years ago, lamenting that all this time they thought they had a slow metabolism/ diabetes/ infertility/ depression, etc., while they really had PCOS. Why is it so important to know when you have this disease? Because a proper diagnosis allows you access to an enormous cache of lifelong treatment options that are unique to people who have PCOS. It also properly identifies your increased risk for diseases such as coronary artery disease, cancer and diabetes, as well as hypothyroidism, high blood pressure, and fibroids. Symptoms generally start in puberty–although I have seen cases that are dormant in women until their mid thirties–and can vary greatly in severity.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) occur when bacteria, most frequently E. coli, invades and infects the lower urinary tract, i.e., the urethra and/or bladder. While men can suffer from UTIs, the majority of cases are found in women. Approximately 40-50% of women experience a UTI in their lifetime and, on average, suffer through six days of symptoms. Of these women, 20-30% of them will have another UTI within three to four months. The most frequently sought solution for a UTI is antibiotics, but this can have negative effects on the body and, in some women, can actually increase the risk of further UTIs by promoting antibiotic resistance.

For most bladder infections, a natural approach can be very effective and the infection resolves quickly without recurrence and complications. Once a patient has had a UTI, educating them about behaviors that decrease and increase the risk of a repeat infection, as well as introducing a prevention protocol if they feel they may be getting a UTI, can help reduce frequency.

UTI or IC? Interstitial cystitis (IC) is another syndrome that can be challenging to diagnose and is often the conclusion of last resort. That being said, the earlier the diagnosis, the better the treatment outcome.

While pelvic pain, coupled with urinary urgency and frequency, often signal a urinary tract infection, regular, frequent occurrence of these symptoms should lead you to suspect IC instead. To get a proper diagnosis, a full workup should be ordered to rule out any structural issues in the urinary mechanism, as well as endometriosis, STDs, kidney stones, and other diseases. Once those possibilities have been eliminated, IC is often diagnosed.

IC is a disease of the bladder that causes the special elastic cells of the bladder to become chronically inflamed and permeable and lose their ability to stretch and regenerate. In some cases, bladder

Say “Good Night” to Chronic Pain

R

eady for a little pillow talk? A pillow’s diminutive size belies its colossal importance to both a good night’s sleep and good health. The right pillow encourages and supports proper alignment of the neck and spine, leading to easier breathing, a deeper night’s sleep (with less tossing and turning) and reduced strain on muscles and joints to help ease chronic pain. In a word: Aaah!

Plenty of pillow varieties are available, with a range of cover materials and types of fill. Top Summer Fitness Tips for Men

I

t’s summer. Our New Year’s resolution is so six months ago. Our grand spring plans to get out and get active have fizzled. Those fancy new running shoes are now lawn mowing shoes. And now it’s just too hot to go out and do anything. Not to mention the two weeks we’ll be away this summer. We’ll just get active in the fall when the kids go back to school, or after we finish the Halloween candy, or when we need to work off the Thanksgiving weight, or the holiday weight, or when we make that New Year’s resolution.

Seriously, we need to make this year different. So how do we start?

1. Set goals. You’ve been given this piece of advice before. This time, take it.

Goals can either be results based, or process based. Think ‘I will lose eight pounds this month,’ vs. ‘I will run 10 miles per week this month.’ Do both, and write them down or put them in your phone’s calendar or somewhere else you will see it.

It’s always good to start with a baseline.

Have your body fat percentage and waist-tohip ratio measured by a qualified personal trainer or physician. It’s also helpful to know your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), or the number of calories you burn in a day, by way of Bioimpedance analysis. This information will help greatly in goal setting.

2. Keep track of activity. The simplest way to keep track is to invest in a pedometer and shoot for 10,000 or more steps per day.

There are also more sophisticated Kinetic Activity Monitors that measure energy expenditure and give you points for performing

different levels of activity, which provides extra motivation. Staying active will improve heart health, regulate blood sugar, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, reduce stress, improve sleep quality and mood, and keep you looking and feeling younger.

As far as the types of activities you want to do, the options are limitless. Any aerobic workout should keep your heart beating at an elevated rate for at least 20 minutes. To really benefit, you’ll want to perform aerobic activity at least three times per week.

Try to include cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility training in your weekly routine.

3. Join an organized sports league.

There are leagues for just about any sport you can think of these days. There are soccer, baseball, softball, flag football, kickball, volleyball, and even dodge ball leagues out there that are easy to find with a google search. Adding a social component will make you forget you’re working out. It will also keep you on a schedule and make you accountable to your team.

4. Find a biking or running club. Sign up and pay for a 5K, 10K, or other run in the fall. Make sure the distance is realistic, and work yourself up slowly. Use a Couchto-5K program to get started, knowing you won’t go couch-to-marathon in two or three months. Invest in, or dig out of the closet, good running shoes to avoid injury. Run outside whenever possible for the fresh air.

5. Get friends and family involved.

Make a standing weekly meet-up with friends to jog, bike, swim, go inline skating,

play tennis, golf, or whatever you like to do. Skip the cart when you golf. Walk nine holes instead of riding 18 holes. Set up a basketball hoop in your driveway and shoot hoops with your kids. Set up a soccer goal or orange cones in the yard and kick a ball around. You’ll be exercising, having fun, and establishing healthy habits for the whole family.

6. Can’t get outside? Dust off the old treadmill, stationary bike, stair climber, or whatever other piece of equipment is now doubling as a coat hanger.

7. Scan the bargain bins or discount websites for work-out DVDs to do at home.

There is something for everyone. Many cable systems have work-out programs included in their on demand sections. Other home exercises include jumping rope, jumping jacks, pushups, pull-ups, minitrampoline or simply running up and down stairs.

8. Join a gym that offers boot camp type classes. Gyms are sprouting up all the time that offer structured, ever-changing, and fun classes of varying intensities. Yoga and Pilates classes are widely available for differing skill and fitness levels.

9. Integrate exercise into your daily life. Consider doing yard work the old-fashioned way. Ditch the leaf blower for a rake.

Use a push lawn mower that isn’t self-propelled. Dig holes, split wood, or cut down trees yourself instead of hiring someone.

It is typical to spend hours in front of the computer or on the phone every day at work. Neck, shoulder and back muscles

A note on BMI, or Body Mass Index: BMI is a very blunt instrument. It’s a ratio of weight to height, squared, used as a way to categorize people as underweight, healthy weight, overweight or obese. The problem is that BMI makes no distinction between body types. A muscle-bound professional athlete could have the same BMI as a sedentary individual with a much lower level of fitness. That’s why it’s important to understand the measures of health mentioned above. The other problem with BMI is that where in the body an individual carries their weight is vitally important. A so-called ‘apple-shaped’ person, who carries fat in their mid-section, has a higher risk of disease than a ‘pear-shaped’ person, who carries weight in the lower half of their body, even if they are the same height and weight.

tense, causing tightness, discomfort, and headaches. Here are some stretches you can do at the office during breaks to improve flexibility and alleviate aches and pains: Shoulder rolls: Sit on the front edge of your chair. Place your feet hip-width apart flat on the floor. Sit straight up, with neck straight and not shifted forward. While holding this posture, as you inhale, raise both shoulders up toward your ears, then back. As you exhale, lower shoulders down, then forward. This exercise consists of four separate motions: up, back, down and forward. Do this five to ten times.

Neck rotation: In the same seated position with arms to your sides, rotate your head left, hold for five seconds, then rotate head right and hold for five seconds. Do this three to five times.

Shoulder stretch: Standing with your feet shoulder-width apart with arms behind your back, lean your head toward your right shoulder. With your right hand, gently pull down on your left arm.

Hold for ten seconds, relax for 10 seconds, and then repeat on the other side.

Trunk rotation: Standing with feet shoulder width apart with your hands on your waist, and knees slightly bent, twist torso gently to the right and hold for 10 seconds, then to the left for 10 seconds.

Repeat three to five times.

Quad stretch: Standing two feet from a wall, place left hand on wall slightly above eye level. Standing straight, grasp the top of your left foot with your right hand. Pull gently until you feel the stretch and hold for 10 seconds. Repeat on the other side. Do this three to five times.

This year, make things different. Get out of your rut. You can live a happier, healthier, longer life with only minor changes, and have fun in the process.

Yoga and Chiropractic Care for the Heart

T

he heart is a biological pump that must function throughout life. As with any machine, the more stress that is placed on it, beyond the functional range, the more it will break down. Added stress on the heart will lead to left ventricular hypertrophy, which is an overdevelopment of the musculature responsible for pumping blood into the arteries. This article explores the ways that constriction of the chest cavity can cause added work for the heart, as well as increased ventricular pressure, thereby adding to the statistics of early cardiovascular disease and death.

Current medical practice understands the established causes of left ventricular hypertrophy, including plaque in the arteries, over exercising, and the use of anabolic steroids. This thesis proposes that there are other causes, including stress, restricted costovertebral motion, and internal thoracic organ compression.

Vertebral Compression

During a state of emotional stress, or mentally induced sympathetic response, the nervous system produces short rapid breathing. Many people are under the influence of unavoidable stress in their daily lives. Shallow breathing creates a chronic lack of rib expansion that produces constricted muscle memory over time. The body becomes accustomed to this pattern as it becomes part of that organisms ‘normal’ breathing pattern.

Stress can attack the body in several ways including mental stress, chemical stress, and physical stress. Mental stress has already been explained and is well accepted by most. Chemical stress is caused by pharmaceutical drugs, as well as illicit drugs, both of which can put the body in a state of sympathetic turmoil. Caffeine and nicotine also act on the adrenal glands to produce stress hormones. Physical stress also can lead to adrenal hormone release.

Poor posture, vertebral subluxation, misalignment, or compressed vertebrae alter proper biomechanical function along the Y-Axis. This vertical motion is necessary during breathing to get full inhalation and exhalation. Disc herniations compress spinal nerves and cause contraction of muscles in the paraspinal musculature. This contracture reduces spinal expansion on the vertical axis further.

Costal Expansion There is a natural rhythm in respiration with the internal organs. As we breathe the organs stretch with their ligamentous attachments to the skeletal structures. This allows for proper function of the organ tissues, an organ exercise of sort. When the ribs cease to expand and contract on respiration, the lungs, heart, and other thoracic anatomy compress but do not re-lengthen, resulting in decreased organ health. We propose, in this state, the heart must pump harder and stronger to perform its task, resulting in an increase in the musculature of the left ventricle, which leads to increased blood pressure.

In all of these conditions, increased pressure is placed on the thoracic viscera for prolonged periods of time. This effect can become permanent, as aging calcifies joints and soft tissue together in a compressed state.

Methods of Correction Addressing the above components involves non-traditional methods that have been historically shown to provide benefit in stress reduction. Maintaining proper alignment and function of the vertebrae is also very important. This includes correcting problems after they occur, as well as prevention through weekly adjustments by a Doctor of Chiropractic. Yoga elongates muscles and balances the body, allowing for stress reduction through both mechanical and mental interventions. ur planet is evolving each and every day. As part of this evolution, people are raising their consciousness, We are beginning to understand that we are much greater and wiser than we realized; we’re wakening to who we really are, which is far more than a physical body.

The ‘NEED TO DO’ in Medical Care

I

was in a fairly big rush that day. As usual, I start the day with hospital rounds, but on that particular morning there were many more patients to see. So, I was late to get to my main office, arriving in the midmorning. I noted the patients scheduled to be seen before I would have to return to my car and drive to my satellite office, a half an hour away in a neighboring suburb town. While this was a fairly busy day, the process was something I was used to as it had become my routine, ingrained in my lifestyle over the past 25 years.

So, when the final patient of the morning arrived at my main office, I must admit I was rushed and eager to begin the drive to my satellite office. I also admit that when I realized this was a new patient who would need new patient intake information, I was a little bit irritated at having to spend the extra time. But, I expected the interview and necessary paperwork to be quick, so I could be off to my next destination in due time.

The interview however did not go as expected, through no fault of the patient. In fact, the pace of my discussion with her naturally but dramatically slowed when I heard her story. I needed to listen carefully to what she had to say.

She was referred to me by another physician in the community because I am a specialist in pulmonary diseases and this lady was having difficulty controlling her asthma. I heard her story of difficulty with control over several years. I heard her daily struggles, especially during allergy seasons and took a careful inventory of the list of all the medications she had been prescribed throughout the years. What struck me as profoundly important was that, in general, she did not like to take any prescription medications, and although she accumulated many medications from her physician, she had not been taking them. She was simply afraid of the medication side effects and complications, especially after reading the complications published on the internet. In fact, she also admitted to being a little bit afraid of admitting her noncompliance to her physician and just struggled along with her respiratory difficulty. What was most curious to me was that she admitted this, in fact, and still liked and respected this referring physician. She just did not want to do as she had been told.

I was thoroughly taken aback by her story. I reflected on the disconnect between this patient and her primary doctor. The amount of trust that existed between the patient and her physician was very low; yet, she clearly wanted to do well by her caregiver and was as receptive as she was able. She had many misgivings and many concerns, and she has a right to her feelings and opinions, but there was a clear lack of communication and understanding between her and

her doctor. Perhaps this relationship is where the healing begins.

In my experience as a pulmonary and critical care physician dedicated entirely to clinical care, I acknowledge that this is not an isolated episode. This story is really all too common. As a doc who is referred patients from other docs, I often have these types of conversations with patients. Admittedly, there are many, many patients who go to physicians with problems and have the expectation of receiving a cure through a pill. This is a common medical expectation in America. However, there are just as many patients who are more interested in receiving information, talking about their problems, and who would like help understanding their condition.

The latter group of patients does not necessarily want a prescription, but often, they get prescriptions nonetheless.

There is something very basic to the understanding of Western, traditional medical care that is practiced in America. We physicians who are trained in American medical schools are taught to think in terms of problem orientation. The simple reality is that when patients come to our office with complaints, we respond by attacking the problem. We are taught that the tools we have to offer are, in almost all cases, either drugs or surgical treatment. Occasionally, we recommend physical therapy for orthopedic problems. But, by and large, we are very much a pill oriented society. This is nothing new and has been a concept covered in news media and in publications in great detail. And, in fact, doctors respond to the expectations of those patients which are almost always an expectation of “the cure” to the malady that affects them because this is what’s been expected for decades.

There are many problems to this approach in healthcare. Some are obvious and some are less so. The most notable problem from my perspective is that we really know clearly that not all medical problems are treated successfully with pills. This has become increasingly clear as we investigate the health of Americans in a general sense. The statistics are profoundly clear that we are an unhealthy society. Without wanting to restate the well-known, we do know that one third of all Americans are obese, two thirds are overweight, and the frightening rise of diabetes, hypertension, chronic inflammatory diseases, and sleep apnea syndrome have been well documented statistically in recent years.

In the past 30 years, there has been an epidemic rise in both prostate and breast cancer, probably a function partly of excessive hormone intake through our foods, especially meat products. And, these statistics exist despite the fact that we Americans consume nearly 1/3 of all pills that are produced in the entire world. America is clearly not correct.

So, the meeting I had with this patient that morning before rushing off to my suburb office became profoundly important to me. Her care represented many of the issues that plague American healthcare. She showed me the problem with our approach to patients who come to us for help. This particular referring physician’s approach was to fill a shopping bag with medications from his sample closet, a large number of medications, and tell her to take all those medications and return in a few weeks.

When she returned, feeling worse, instead of stepping back to reevaluate, he actually gave her more medications and increased dosages. He then asked her to return again in a few weeks for reevaluation.

Because of her fear of disappointing the physician, she did not tell him that she was afraid to take the medications. She did not tell him that despite the bag of free medication, she still was not taking them. Appointment after appointment, she did not admit to him her fear of taking so many medicines.

While some may suggest that it was the patient who did wrong and that she is what we call a “noncompliant patient”, this is not my perception at all. I do not believe the patient was at fault, if fault is the proper word, but the responsibility of the referring physician and his approach to healthcare.

The successful care of this patient was actually quite easy. All she needed to do was take a controller medication, an inhaler, twice a day to prevent increasing numbers of asthma exacerbations. She also needed to hear from me, clearly, that the medication had virtually no side effects in most people and was safe to use even in pregnant women when dosed correctly.

Hearing that, alone, gave her tremendous comfort, and allayed virtually all of her fears. I noted that she first had to admit her fear so we could face it. She needed to be taught about the meds and their effects. The large number of other medications was unnecessary and she did well without needing to add extra pills or nebulizer solutions. She was also relieved to know that there was a physician who was happy to discuss the condition and medicine side effects.

She benefited more from the open discussion and open ears, rather than the prescription and instruction to go to her drugstore. She was happy to know that there would be follow-up care and we would continue the conversation. She would return to the office for a discussion of how this particular regimen was working. There were not several medications added with possible drug-interactions to worry about and to add confusion. A single medication change

would be the only variable, and there would be a clear discussion of success or failure within a short period of time to understand whether this medication was helpful or not.

Patients always want the assurance that they will have some follow-up with their physician so as to determine success or failure.

No one wants to be given medicines, and then be dismissed without proper follow-up.

Having been in clinical medicine since 1978, and having taking care of thousands of patients both in the hospital and in the office, I have come to certain conclusions about the way I used to practice medicine in our pill oriented society, and the way I practice now.

My approach in the past clearly had been to respond to a problem complaint with a prescription. This was my training, this is Western oriented healthcare, and this simply is what doctors do with regard to patient care on a routine basis. It is the rare physician who has no prescription pad on his desk top. I believe that we have been trained this way, and the behavior carries forward over our years of practice.

I am completely amazed at the number of medications we physicians prescribe in the name of prevention or prophylaxis. It is entirely common to see drug lists of daily and prn (as needed) prescriptions numbering as high as 20 or more medicines. Even trying to take the medicines correctly and on schedule is a daunting task for anyone who is well, let alone for the patient who is ill, elderly, and frequently frightened or confused. Nevertheless, we as physicians frequently choose to maintain a present medication regimen in order not to “rock the boat”. The idea of, “what pill can we do away with?” is frequently not a part of an office visit conversation.

In the next decade, medical treatment and the approach to healthcare will change dramatically. We will be using fewer medications and concentrating much more on illness prevention including diet and lifestyle changes. It may be the public and not the healthcare establishment who is pushing hardest for this change. It’s the voice and vote of patient preference which I hear in my office on a daily basis when I take the time to ask. It often sounds like, “Doc, do I really have to take another pill, or are there any alternatives we can discuss? Will things get better if I modify what I’ve been doing out there in the world? Or do I really have to take that pill?” I am glad when they ask. Fortunately for us all, times are changing.

ulvar pain disorders are more common than people think. They can occur at any age and are often misdiagnosed; women often see several health professionals before an accurate diagnosis is made. By the time they have an accurate diagnosis they can be frustrated and depressed, and their intimate relationships may have suffered as well.

The vulva is simply defined as the external genitalia and includes the labia minora and majora, the clitoris and perineum, and the opening of the vagina.

The first one involves generalized vulvar pain; chronic (usually daily) pain, burning or tingling in the vulva. The second type of pattern usually involves provoked pain. In these cases women do not have discomfort unless something provokes the pain. The most common provocation involves intercourse, placement of a tampon, and occasionally tight clothing.

Experts disagree as to whether these are subsets of the same disease or are two separate diseases.

Diagnoses and Treatment Distinguishing between these two categories is of the utmost importance because the treatments are usually different. It is essential to make the right diagnosis so the right treatment plan can be started.

There are multiple possible treatments available for vulvar pain syndromes. Some of these treatments can be simple and involve minimal effort. However, some patients need daily medications and surgery. Often a combination of medication, physical therapy and surgery works well. Again, the most im-

portant step in achieving success is to have an accurate diagnosis, leading to appropriate treatments.

All medications for vulvar pain syndromes are off-label. Almost all of these medications interfere with nerve signal. They sometimes can have unpleasant side effects such as weight gain and lethargy. Sometimes a patient needs to try several medications to find the one that helps with symptoms relief but does not cause unbearable side effects.

Sudden Onset Many patients ask why they suddenly have vulvar pain symptoms, seemingly out of the blue. Sometimes there is an event that precedes symptoms, such as the birth of a child, a surgery or a physical trauma. But more often than not, there is no identifiable trigger for the event. However, regardless of whether or not we can identify a trigger, the treatments do work. Patients who are correctly diagnosed and have appropriate treatment usually start to feel better within a few weeks.

Prompt Treatment is Important The importance of an appropriate diagnosis and prompt treatment cannot be stressed enough. In a study published in 2006 that discussed the use of gabapentin for the treatment of generalized vulvodynia it was noted that the longer a patient had unresolved symptoms the harder it was to get good control of symptoms when medication was finally started. The most important step a patient can take when symptoms occur is to seek immediate medical attention. Several studies have shown that delay in treatment makes it harder to get symptoms under control. It also has been shown that unresolved symptoms over time begin to

affect both the patient and her relationship with her partner and can lead to depression and anxiety.

While treatment times vary, it’s important to remember that these are chronic conditions that do need to be treated over time. Treatments usually are not less than six months.

Correlation with Other Medical Issues Recent studies have shown a correlation with other medical problems. Patients with vulvar pain syndromes are more likely to have chronic headaches, TMJ, interstitial cystitis, fibromyalgia, and anxiety. These symptoms often cluster together in individuals.

If you have chronic symptoms of burning pain and irritation in the vulva that are not resolving, you should see a specialist who has expertise in vulvar pain disorders. You are more likely to get resolution quicker and relief of these symptoms.

Vulvar Pain is Not Unusual Some patients are embarrassed and put off calling a doctor. Patients should be aware that these conditions are much more common than they may think. Studies show that up to 15% of the female population may have vulvar pain at some point. Don’t be afraid to discuss these symptoms with your physician. If one treatment does not work look for alternatives. There is hope for these bothersome syndromes.

Is Acetaminophen Causing an Autism Epidemic?

A

merica is beset by grave health problems and as a nation it leads the world in obesity, diabetes, cancer, autism, attention deficit-hyperactivity (ADHD) and asthma. It is time we get serious about reversing this dire situation or we will face chaos and oblivion.

I’m writing this article to disseminate significant new information on the cause of the dramatic increase in the prevalence of autism, ADHD and asthma. The incidence of these conditions has risen to epidemic proportions and threatens the health of a whole generation of young Americans. It is evident that the increases are exactly proportional to the expanded use of Acetaminophen (Tylenol) since 1980 especially in children following vaccinations and the use of the drug by pregnant women.

Scientific inquiry into the reasons for these dramatic increases has led to a thorough understanding of the mechanisms whereby Acetaminophen (APAP) induces damage to brain cells, the liver and the immune system. A recent article in the Journal of Restorative Medicine (October 2013) details the ways Acetaminophen toxicity reduces the liver’s ability to detoxify many toxic chemicals in the environment which leads to excessive free radical damage to cellular components. The characteristic loss of brain cells in autism is caused by the loss of brain glutathione due to Acetaminophen usage. Glutathione is an endogenous (made within the body) antioxidant that is absolutely essential in protecting against free radical damage, especially in the liver and brain. Without the ability to detoxify the hundreds of environmental toxins to which we are exposed, serious damage to the body’s systems can occur. Therefore, factors such as pesticides, solvents, synthetic drugs, chemicals, PCBs, heavy metals etc… can be unleashed to do real damage.

A startling illustration of the damage caused by Acetaminophen is a comparison with the low incidence of autism in Cuba (185 cases in a population of 11 million) versus 1.5 million in 300 million in the United States. Thus, the rate is 298 times higher than in Cuba. In spite of the poor economic situation in Cuba, they still have compulsory vaccination programs which lead to the conclusion that it’s not the vaccines that cause the problem. Interestingly, Cuba does not employ the use of Acetaminophen to reduce fevers after vaccines are given. This fact would seem to implicate the concomitant use of Acetaminophen and vaccines.

Studies seeking to find this link only began about five years ago, but the evidence is significant that great damage is being done by Acetaminophen usage. In addition, these studies verify that the increases in the rates of asthma, and attention deficit-hyperactivity (ADHD) disorders correlated with Acetaminophen usage. For example, before 1970 ADHD was rare in school children and almost non-existent in adolescents and adults. There was an 8-fold increase in the prevalence of ADHD in the United States during 1980–2007. The incidence of Asthma has risen dramatically, as well, in the last forty years.

The harmful effects of Acetaminophen must also be mentioned. Consider the following: the use of Acetaminophen by pregnant women produces neurotoxic effects on the brain neurons of the fetus; its use during pregnancy is associated with the teratogenic defects in the testicular function and the GI tract. There is also increased incidence of asthma in maternally exposed and postnatally exposed children; Acetaminophen is converted to a toxic metabolite (NAPQI) which causes oxidative damage to proteins, nuclear acids and lipids in addition to in-

creased mitochondrial and cellular damage; Acetaminophen also causes severe immune abnormalities, depresses the immune response to vaccines, can cause metabolic acidosis and is the leading cause of liver failure and death in the United States. The damaging effects of APAP are so startling that it is estimated 56,000 emergency visits occur yearly in the United States because of it.

In the brains of autistic patients, the most prominent histological (tissue), changes were observed in the cerebellum, characterized by a patchy loss of neurons in the Purkinje cell layer and granular cell layer. These abnormalities are thought to be caused by oxidative stress due to glutathione depletion which results from Acetaminophen metabolites. The rapid increase in autism around 1980 coincides with the

increase in asthma, allergies and eczema, all of which reflect the increased use of Acetaminophen.

Interestingly, the accelerated use of Acetaminophen followed the Reye ’s syndrome scare over a possible association with aspirin use. That aspirin/Reye Syndrome relationship has been largely debunked, but unfortunately Acetaminophen has replaced aspirin use and is now entrenched as the drug of choice.

When you consider the immense damage that has been done to a whole generation of America’s children and the population in general, it would seem an immediate call to action must occur. The medical community and public must be made aware of the dangers related to Acetaminophen use and take appropriate action to halt the destructive effects that result from the use of this killer drug.

Men’s Health Checklist: Beyond the Status Quo of Cardiovascular Risk Factors

en are statistically less likely than women to seek medical advice. The “wait until it’s broken to fix it” mentality leads to all too many preventable diseases and deaths. The following are things to add to your health checklist and discuss with your doctor.

Questions to Ask Yourself 1. How dense or sticky are your LDL (low density lipoproteins) cholesterol?

2. What is the quantity and quality of your HDL (high density lipoproteins) cholesterol?

3. What is your insulin level and are you showing signs of insulin resistance?

4. Are your inflammatory markers elevated?

5. Do you sleep at least seven hours per night?

6. How do you manage stress?

7. Would you consider your life joyful?

If you cannot answer these questions, your heart may not be as protected as you think.

Advanced Cholesterol Screening Times are changing when it comes to cardiovascular health screening. Routine cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure screenings are not the only way to monitor an individual’s cardiovascular health status, and strokes and heart attacks still occur when these routine screenings prove normal.

Cholesterol is typically delineated into total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL (the ‘bad’ cholesterol) and HDL (the ‘good’ cholesterol). You want to keep total cholesterol down while maintaining a healthy balance between the good and bad cholesterol.

LDL cholesterol comes in several forms; some forms are heavy, dense and sticky, making them more likely to plaque arteries.

Quantity and quality count when it comes to HDL cholesterol.

You want a high number of HDLs to patrol the cardiovascular system, acting like garbage trucks, removing the trash the LDL can leave behind. In addition, quality counts when it comes to HDL cholesterol; the larger the garbage truck the more efficient it can be.

Triglycerides are linked to blood sugar, in the sense that if you do not eat enough healthy fiber and protein to maintain a level blood sugar, typically there will be an increase in triglycerides.

Insulin Resistance Insulin is a hormone that keeps blood sugar levels balanced in the body and assists in supplying energy to vital organs including the heart, brain and kidneys. Checking fasting insulin levels in addition to fasting blood sugar is important, as elevated insulin levels can be a sign of insulin resistance—a condition where the blood sugar no longer responds to insulin’s signal. This can be a sign of a pre-diabetic situation, which can be reversed through lifestyle.

Inflammation Inflammation is not specific to any one part of the body. It is non-discriminatory and can affect a multitude of organ systems.

Specifically, when it comes to heart health, your CRP level, or Creactive protein, is a test that can be run to quantify inflammation in the cardiovascular system.

Elevated levels of CRP carry a much higher risk of a cardiovascular event. Increasing heart healthy anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish and nuts, adequate hydration, and stress reduction can all help to keep CRP levels down. Consider having your CRP level checked.

Sleep is the Priority The importance of quality sleep cannot be overstated, especially when it comes to cardiovascular and mental health. The body needs downtime to rejuvenate and restore; without it, the body begins to release alarm hormones including cortisol. This makes the body feel as if there is not time to relax, always in a fight or flight state. Continuous elevations of cortisol throughout the day can increase anxiety, create fluctuations in blood sugar and contribute to changeable bowel habits.

Making time for sleep is first priority. Secondly, if you find falling or staying asleep to be an issue, there are several natural remedies that can be used to help get your body back in a normal sleep rhythm. In addition, a sleep study may be helpful in determining if restlessness at night is due to sleep apnea, a condition in which regular breathing is interrupted during the night, starving the brain of oxygen and signaling the body to wake up. Sleep apnea is very serious and needs to be remedied immediately if suspected.

unless they keep work hours long, sleep hours short and rest and relaxation time to an absolute minimum. Work responsibilities, commitments, family obligations and the like can all become overwhelming and draining.

Centering your life around joy instead of chaos can turn the chaos into enjoyment of life. We all have down days, but when the mental drain of life becomes too much to handle we not only begin to tear down mentally but also physically.

ith a tagline like “Luxury comes Naturally,” you can be sure I was looking forward to my stay at the Inn by the Sea in Crescent Beach, Maine. So often when we hear the terms “ecofriendly” or “green hotel,” I think most people’s perceptions are…scratchy, uncomfortable bedding; low pressure showers; dim lighting; less comfort and inconvenience…all this for a higher price! It couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, a recent study found that many green hotels were actually less expensive than other comparable hotels.

And you can definitely find luxury at an ecofriendly hotel.

Voted one of the World’s Best by Travel + Leisure Magazine in 2012, and Conde Nast Traveler’s Gold List for 2014, Inn by the Sea is Maine’s premier luxury beach destination. Now that’s something you don’t always see a hotel becoming involved with…ecofriendly or not! Using local plants that create ever blooming gardens as well as creating habitat for local wildlife has earned the Inn a Wildlife Habitat certification from the National Wildlife Federation. Beautiful indigenous nectar gardens and milkweed are specifically planted for endangered butterflies. During the growing season guests are invited to classes on “How to Plant for Wildlife” and children enjoy “Bug’s Life Garden Tours” where they learn about local ecosystems from a bug’s view point.

In an effort to stop the New England cottontail from vanishing in Maine, the Inn has assumed responsibility for removing two acres of invasive, non-indigenous plant species, such as bamboo and bitter sweet, from state property. The Inn replanted the area with local shrubs such as raspberry, blueberry, dogwood, alder, winterberry and dewberry to create a high-quality, safe habitat for New England cottontails. The

And let’s not forget the food! Don’t expect Chilean Sea Bass when you visit their premier restaurant, Sea Glass. Executive Chef Mitchell Kaldrovich’s menus feature underutilized seafood fresh from Maine’s coastal waters. The Chef works with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and knowledgeable local fishermen to identify abundant and delicious fish from the Gulf of Maine that are relatively unknown and certainly not overfished. By serving lesser known fish, the group hopes to help preserve the diversity and health of the Gulf of Maine. The chef also sources fresh produce, meat and poultry from local farms whenever possible in a true celebration of Maine fare.
