From the beginning of this pandemic, I have continually asked the question - WHY are the media and traditional medical professionals NOT saying one thing about how to support health naturally? Eat clean food, exercise, reduce stress, get outdoors and in the sunshine, take supplements and spend time with your family and friends. It’s very simple. Yet all we hear is - “Stay inside, gyms and restaurants are dangerous, isolate yourself.” No one is talking about the physical and mental ramifications of these extreme measures. We’re all worried about catching a virus but no one is worried about the long-term effects of not exercising, not eating healthy, not breathing fresh air, not hugging and connecting with our family? Please check out this video with Kristen Meaghan, Industrial Hygienist about the dangers of masks: https://www.brighteon.com/20ada7b2-0be9-43a8bf38-3a7147c4bb20

MARKETING DIRECTOR Heather Zundel heather@naturalnutmeg.com

Intuitively I believe we ALL know that human beings are NOT designed to wear a mask that prevents breathing fresh air and we certainly are NOT designed to live in isolation and not hug and connect with each other. There are actual studies that show that babies who are not held, nuzzled, and hugged can stop growing and even die! https://www.psychologytoday.com/ us/blog/born-love/201003/touching-empathy

CREATIVE DIRECTOR Ashley Frament layout@naturalnutmeg.com

There are many reports out now that show no difference in states that had extreme mask mandates (CA, NY) vs. states that were completely open with no mask mandate (FL). In fact, Florida has consistently had significantly lower positive tests and deaths AND their population is much older.

pring is just around the corner and now is the perfect time to focus on detox and healing your immune system. As someone who has practiced natural medicine for 20 years and is the publisher of holistic lifestyle magazines, my belief is that our immune system and our bodies were designed to be able to fight off viruses and bacteria naturally, as long as we stay healthy and support our immune system naturally. For those of you who follow me on social media, you know that I have been very vocal about the health dangers of wearing masks as well as the dangers of the vaccine (medical device).

Natural Nutmeg - March/April 2021

I’ve been living in Naples, FL for six months out of the year and was there last May/June and November/December. Many of you have probably seen the news segment about Seed to Table - a grocery store where no one wears masks. There is a huge uproar about how dangerous it is. Well - the facts don’t show that. Naples, FL has one of the lowest positive case and death rates in the country, yet most of us walk around mask free. How is that possible? That’s what the news should be reporting. Imperial County in California has one of the youngest populations in the country vs. Collier County in Florida, where I live, having one of the oldest populations. The rate of daily deaths in Imperial County is 30x that of Collier County, with the former having been locked down with mask mandates all along and Collier County being mostly open all year long. Whatever your belief, my hope is that you begin to trust your intuition - and more importantly, your body and its natural ability to have perfect health. Wishing you health and happiness

uring a pandemic, celebrating the milestone of 40 years of Rolfing® has posed a challenge to Sharon Sklar, Certified Advanced Rolfer. Due to COVID-19, her volunteer affiliations have been curtailed at both Hartford Hospital as a Pet Therapy Team with her two dogs and as a mentor in the West Hartford Public Schools. To give back to the community, Sharon has created a series of monthly causes to showcase and build more awareness and support. “Foodshare February” had Sharon and her clients collecting non-perishable food items as well as contributing money to help feed neighbors in need. “Make a Difference” March focuses on two very worthwhile community-based organizations, The Healing Meals Community Project and Lasagna Love. Both are part of national networks and have local chapters. Healing Meals, based in Bloomfield, provides healthy, organic meals to people (and their families) in a health crisis. www.healingmealsproject.org. Sharon is especially grateful to Healing Meals for providing her nourishing food when she required shoulder surgery three years ago. The Lasagna Love Initiative pairs families who need a homemade lasagna with volunteers who cook and deliver to a matched family. www.lasagnalove.org

Nutmeg “Nuggets”

Taking Back Your Health Through Individualized, Wellness-Based Naturopathic Medicine By Frank Aieta, ND

O

ne of the most basic human desires is health. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most elusive, confusing, and frustrating struggles. How do we sort out all of the conflicting information regarding health and wellness? Why has our current medical system failed to rectify many of the most popular health concerns plaguing Americans? Common symptoms like pain, fatigue, hormonal imbalances, and weight gain are considered “normal”, and more serious chronic conditions ranging from autoimmune diseases, metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease and dementia are perceived as an inevitable result of aging. Sadly, this is reinforced by conventional medicine where patients often feel powerless in their own body and are unable to improve their state of wellbeing. “Taking Back Your Health Through Individualized, Wellness-Based Naturopathic Medicine” is my latest e-book written as a comprehensive solution to this dilemma. It combines 20 years of whole-person naturopathic medicine, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and clinical nutrition in a DIY approach designed to empower any person struggling with their state of health and looking to get to the root cause of why they are unwell. 8

Natural Nutmeg - March/April 2021

This eBook is not another trendy diet or wellness book. It takes individuality into consideration as opposed to the typical one-size-fits-all model of most diet and wellness plans. It provides resources for the reader to follow such as which lab tests to run, access to order your own labs without having to go through your doctor, how to interpret the lab results, and what to do based on the findings in order to restore function and promote true healing. If you’re dissatisfied with the standardized medical system and the lack of personalized care, it may be time to take your health back by trying something different. An excerpt from “Taking Back Your Health Through Individualized, Wellness-Based Naturopathic Medicine” illustrates how common this is and why the solution is a systematic, functionalbased tailored approach. “On a daily basis in my practice I see the frequent mismanagement of a patient’s health by the conventional, disease-based health care system. Patients come to me after seeing countless doctors from primary care to specialists, and the majority of the time they are offered a treatment that solely manages the symptoms of their chronic condition and fails to address the underlying cause.

Most of the chronic conditions that I see in my practice haven’t yet progressed to an overt disease or pathology but are rather a more functional problem. So, the next question is, “What is a functional problem?” A functional problem is when a patient’s body is essentially telling them that something is wrong through the expression of signs and symptoms. Many times, when a patient with a functional problem presents to their conventional doctor with their list of symptoms, the doctor may go on to examine them and then send them off for testing such as blood work or maybe some imaging. With a functional problem, oftentimes nothing remarkable will show up on these conventional tests, so the patient is simply offered a treatment that will alleviate or mask the symptom and they are sent on their way. Let’s use the condition known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) as an example. The patient may present to the doctor’s office with symptoms of digestive distress, maybe some gas and bloating combined with loose stools or constipation. The doctor may then refer this individual to a specialist (like a gastroenterologist) for further testing, such as a simple blood test or something more extensive like a colonoscopy, endoscopy or even a CT scan. If all these tests come back negative for any overt pathology like cancer or an inflammatory bowel disease, the investigation stops there, and the patient will then receive a treatment to solely treat their symptoms. In the case of irritable bowel syndrome, they may be told to take a fiber supplement, a stool softener, an anti-gas medication or some other drug to just deal with the symptoms. Let’s contrast this to my more individualized wellness-based approach. If it’s a more functional problem then I try to uncover the true etiology, which can be one or more of the following: a dietary shortcoming, nutrient deficiency, a hormonal or neurochemical imbalance, a food allergy, sensitivity or intolerance, a structural imbalance or an underlying hidden infection (viral, fungal or bacterial). In this book, I discuss some very simple dietary changes that can be made, basic lab tests that can be ordered by your conventional doctor, and natural dietary supplements that you can take based upon the lab findings.”

The current healthcare model is obviously flawed due to these shortcomings and conventional medical training that is void of simple things such as education about diet, lifestyle, nutritional supplements, and other alternative therapies (herbal medicine, acupuncture, physical medicine, and homeopathic medicine). Because of this we can see why it’s easy for people to get caught up in an ongoing cycle of health problems. My main reason for writing this book is to equip readers with all the information they may need to start taking the proper steps to take their health back into their own hands. Most conventional doctors out there are practicing primarily diseasebased medicine, whereas I pride myself on taking a different approach to health. I call it individualized, wellness-based naturopathic medicine. Dr. Frank Aieta, ND is a CT Licensed Naturopathic Physician and practices out of his office in West Hartford. He sees patients remotely from any location, coaching individuals on how to reach their goals for weight loss, stress reduction, and health optimization. He specializes in the treatment of both acute and chronic disease using the most advanced natural therapeutics and all-natural, non-toxic treatments. Additionally, he is the co-author of another eBook and written publications and is a frequent contributor to a variety of regional public health and wellness resources such as podcasts and interviews. Avoid These 3 Major Weight-Loss Mistakes

N

inety-five percent of diets fail. Most people that lose weight gain it back plus more. This fact is extremely discouraging, but I am here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be like this for you. Here are the top 3 mistakes I see with my weight-loss clients. If you want to experience true and lasting weight-loss success, avoid these 3 mistakes at all costs! Mistake #1: Going from 0 to 100 at the beginning of your weight-loss transformation. An example of this is when someone who hasn’t exercised in years sets a goal to work out for an hour a day seven days a week. This is a huge change in lifestyle and will likely bring up a lot of resistance. Instead, set a goal to exercise for 15 minutes a day five days a week, and build up from there. When you implement incremental changes, you set yourself up to achieve long-term success. Mistake #2: Slacking when it comes to scheduling your week. If you really want something to happen, it needs a time and a place in your calendar. If you want to improve your exercise regimen, schedule your workouts at the beginning of the week. If you want to start eating healthier, schedule time for grocery shopping and block off spots in your schedule for cooking. Mistake #3: Not getting your subconscious mind on board with your weight-loss goals. Your subconscious is 88% of your brainpower. It is where your limiting beliefs and habits are stored. Aligning your subconscious mind with your weight-loss goals and vision makes weight-loss fast and sustainable. Most people fail when it comes to weight loss because they forgot to transform the most important thing - their mind. The fastest way to rewire your subconscious mind is through Hypnotherapy. When you are in hypnosis, your subconscious mind is extremely open to new information that serves you and your goals. Weight loss does not have to be an overwhelming struggle. It can be easy and sustainable when you avoid these three major mistakes. As a weight-loss hypnotherapist, I help clients achieve their weight-loss goals in a fun way where they are enjoying the journey to success. Megan Moriarty, Certified Hypnotherapist considers herself a professional belief enhancer. Through hypnosis, she guides clients to break through limiting habits and beliefs. After working together, you will embody the belief that you are the powerful creator of your life that can manifest anything you desire. 860.808.4672. www.megan-moriarty.com. info@megan-moriarty.com. Learn from 2020 and Lead the Way in 2021 By Sandi Coyne-Gilbert, MBA, DM

I

n 2020, nearly nothing we anticipated came to fruition as we had expected. Yet this past year, maybe even without recognizing it, adapting to the multitude of missteps and new directions may have helped us prepare for tomorrow’s challenges. So, as we ponder what 2021 could bring, obstacles and opportunities alike, we should consider how we can take what we’ve learned and apply those teachings in order to lead the way for what lies ahead. Five Tips Leaders Can Embrace for a Resilient and Rewarding New Year 1. Leaders must learn to let go, live, and lead with intention. If we learned anything from the year that just passed, it’s that we can’t control everything. Often, we can’t control anything, but we do have the ability to pause, pivot, and keep people, including ourselves, on the path to prosperity. Intention provides the impetus for leaders to move forward, even when those steps are a bit unsteady. We must re-establish our commitment to those who depend on our example. By acknowledging one another and letting people know they are not alone, we remind others that we are all in this together. 2. Check-in with yourself and your team, so no one checks out. The burdens of burnout as a result of excessive remote work is all too real under the current circumstances. Job duties are juggling in the air with at-home responsibilities, and it’s just a matter of time before the tipping point proves problematic. Stopping to remind your team to set reasonable goals strategizes group success for the short term and long haul, ultimately 10

Natural Nutmeg - March/April 2021

increasing the well-being of the people we work alongside. 3. Authentic actions inspire real responses. In Viktor Frankl’s incredible book Man’s Search for Meaning he shared, “Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” Actively listening, engaging, and acknowledging how people respond to situations promote a genuine sense of living in the moment and learning from one another. Recognizing another’s point of view and not responding reactively can create real connections. 4. Integrity is essential; let no one be invisible. If you are a relationship-driven person, working alone from home and only seeing people on Zoom could have a harmful impact. No matter our personality or preferences, we all typically want to be “seen,” with our contributions appreciated and recognized. Without this crucial sense of connection, people can feel a lack of purpose and support. Select a means to provide a safe space to make people feel visible and valued. Even when we know something is problematic for a team member, we must dig in and find out how to help. 5. Portray a world past the pandemic. Leaders must paint a powerful picture to create a new reality for their teams. No one wants to feel like they can easily be replaced and a leader’s support indicates a sense of security in their people. Talking with your team about what you see moving forward and how you intend to

use the “spark” you see in an individual is paramount. Of course, you might not see a spark in everyone, but as leaders we must ask ourselves, is there no spark there, or have I not taken the time to look? We know that this global experience will impact us long after returning to some resemblance of a new normal. We can’t change what has happened, but we should examine every encounter and determine how we can use these trials to improve how we lead and to inspire those who depend on us. Despite all odds, we can show others not only how to survive, but how to thrive as well. The invitation to make an impact is ours for the taking. Shaken to the Core By Sharon Sklar, Certified Advanced Rolfer

O

n January 6, 2021, I was settling down to write this column. It was my typical Wednesday off. I rest my hands, take time for myself and get life done. I was watching television coverage of the Electoral College Count, when all hell broke loose. As I witnessed the rioters running up the Capitol steps, smashing windows and doors to get inside, I felt my stomach sink and suddenly began to cry. I immediately felt unsafe and ungrounded. Those feelings were so familiar from years past. Feeling unsafe and unstable was how I felt in my twenties. In art school, the weirder you were, the cooIer you were. I wasn’t that weird and certainly wasn’t that cool. After college, I began to actively seek truth, balance and inner connection. I took every healing workshop in modalities that sounded interesting. I worked as a waitress, taught art classes, sold Earth Shoes, traveled in Europe. I got Rolfed. In my second of the ten sessions of Rolfing®, I received an inner message that I would become a Rolfer and do this work for the rest of my life. I began to feel more grounded and focused as my body transformed with the Rolfing® sessions. My journey had begun.

As I worked on my prerequisites for admission to The Rolf Institute (now called The Dr. Ida Rolf® Institute), I had a crippling car accident and could not walk or work. I had to heal and get ready for my interviews, so I stayed with a friend in Carmel, California. She brought me up the road to The Esalen Institute in Big Sur, the hotbed of wholistic body/mind/spirit thought. Through connections I made, I ended up staying for a life-changing month, trading bodywork with practitioners there and healing from my recent injuries. I then went off to Boulder, Colorado for my two days of Rolfing® interviews. I was accepted to The Rolf Institute and soon began my studies. I had a difficult time as I was only 24 years old and didn’t yet know enough about myself. I was the youngest person in my class with most of the other students already having had a career or two. Many things were suggested to me to help me “find” myself. I believe the process of getting my body organized with all of the Rolfing® I had over those years, brought me into my solid, strong body and nurtured my development of a clear, intuitive mind. I became steady, grounded, and grew professionally, personally and spiritually.

Ten years later, I remember how I suddenly lost my physical sense of the world. I awoke in the midst of an earthquake at Zion National Park. My bed was jumping, the floors were rocking, the walls were creaking and the sound of a loud freight train roared from below. It became clear this was a massive earthquake. I returned to my bed after a harrowing several minutes huddled under the bathroom door frame and burst into tears as I put my head down on the pillow. My entire nervous system was reacting to the lack of solid earth beneath me. We expect the earth to be stable, always there when you jump or put your feet down on the floor or when we walk, hike or run. I sobbed myself to sleep that night, knowing I had experienced a profound shift. When I witnessed the chaos and the storming of our Nation’s Capitol, all my senses went back to those times when I experienced ungrounded and insecure feelings. This time, I felt it in my gut. I was mentally and emotionally upset. I needed more sleep, reached for comfort food and felt distracted. Speaking to others about this, many people had a somewhat similar reaction. We all felt we had no ground to stand on. I felt unsteady, shaken to the core. www.NaturalNutmeg.com

The remedy? I went on a five-mile hike with my dogs, prepared healthy food and got myself back. As I breathed the fresh air and felt the solid earth beneath my feet, my inner fears melted away. We certainly cannot control all that happens, but we can have a say in how we deal with things. The layering of all these current issues from COVID, to winter, more isolation, unstable government; all pile up. However, we get to choose to stay the course, choose organization, and choose healthy habits. I challenge you to find what makes you happy. Get some bodywork, cook new favorite foods, enjoy a long bath, take a hike, dance, or clean your space. It all helps us stay centered. We need to be in our right minds and in our right bodies to survive these assaults and traumas of life. Go within, hug a tree, write in a journal, be kind to yourself and to others. We are all in this and struggling with how to cope. I see freedom here for myself not relying on the old ways, but creating some new ones. It is time to regroup, take stock and clean out. Shaken to the core, but with feet firmly planted, I celebrate each new day. Sharon Sklar is in her 40th year of private practice as a Certified Advanced Rolfer. The Four Pillars of Optimal Health By Kevin Cota, DPT, SCS, ART

A

s much as we would like one, there is no single answer to achieving optimal health. In truth, a healthy lifestyle is one rooted in balance, not quick fixes or targeted approaches. Each person has a different definition of Optimal Health. Their needs and goals are different and so is their approach to their own health. However, all definitions include some balance between the four pillars of optimal health; exercise, recovery, nutrition, and stress management. These pillars work together in determining the state of your wellbeing. If one is lacking, it will impact the rest. That is why finding the right balance is so important when you are undertaking your health and wellness journey. This constant search for the right balance between the four pillars inherently leads to a comprehensive approach to your health. By doing so, you will not focus on exercise as the key to staying fit and healthy. Instead, you will realize how important it is to fuel your body properly through nutrition, or get enough sleep at night. You will see the impact of various stressors in your life, and learn how to manage those, as well. Exercise Exercise is key to keeping your body fit and healthy at any age. It can improve your immune and cardiovascular systems, release endorphins and much more. From maintaining flexibility and strength over time to reaching that marathon milestone, movement contributes to overall optimal health.

The WHO recently updated their physical activity guidelines, recommending that adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise each week. Children need at least 60 minutes each day. Staying active is essential to adding years to your life, as well as improving flexibility, muscle mass and heart strength. Of course, there are times during which too much exercise is detrimental to your health. Pushing your body to the limit is one thing, but consistently going over that limit and hurting your body is another. Not stretching before exercise can lead to sore muscles and troubled movement the next day. Overuse of muscles can lead to wear and tear or injury, and if you do not recover after a workout properly, you may not enjoy its full benefits. Recovery Our bodies are powerful machines, but even they need a break. From getting enough sleep to giving your muscles time to recover from an intense workout, there are many ways to ensure your body is not overworked. Recovery does not solely aid in relaxation and healing, it is critical for enhancing athletic performance and even preventing future injuries. Your body needs time to recover from the stress that exercise places on the body, and muscles need time to repair themselves. There are various recovery methods that one can use, but the most basic method is sleep. A lack of mental clarity and energy will prevent you from achieving your goals and leave you feeling

tired. You can also find ways to loosen your muscles after a tough workout, such as through ice baths or massages. A cryotherapy session can improve your sleep quality and decrease inflammation, while an infrared sauna session can benefit your cardiovascular system. Nutrition The food we eat has a profound impact on our bodies. Proper nutrition can give you the energy you need to succeed and poor nutrition can prevent you from doing so. Whether it’s increasing energy, training for an event, losing weight, regulating blood pressure or decreasing inflammation, a dietitian can help you set goals and provide prescriptive advice within the context of your overall health and wellness goals. Not having enough energy, for example, can leave you feeling more tired than usual or even dizzy after a workout. It is important to remember that each person will require a unique diet, and no single approach will work for everyone. Listening to your body and its needs is key to finding the right approach, as well as figuring out when to eat. You can eat healthy all day, but there is such a thing as eating too much. You can also eat very little and consequently lack proper nutrients.

Stress Management Stress management is often the forgotten pillar of optimal health. No matter what gains you make with nutrition, exercise or recovery; excessive mental and physical stress can prevent you from achieving your fullest potential. Being able to balance the good stress, such as exercise, with the negative stress, such as injury and emotional hardship, is key. Educating yourself on how to track your stress levels is the first step to managing them. You can do so through wearable fitness trackers that provide you with data on your sleep quality, amount of exercise, heart rate, and more. This ability to track and manage your data will empower you to take better control of your health and wellbeing. Meditation apps can also help track your mindfulness and remind you to take a step back if you are feeling stressed. Each of these four pillars are part of achieving optimal health. Once you find your balance, you will be empowered to take care of your health and wellness journey. Healing Chronic Illness with Functional Medicine By Jennifer Letitia, MD

C

hronic health issues can be a daily burden. Many are suffering with PostCOVID (or Long-COVID) syndrome, that includes fatigue, brain fog, and residual heart, lung, liver and kidney issues. Sadly, ongoing symptoms are often dismissed or inadequately addressed by mainstream medicine. Conventional medicine usually manages disease with pharmaceuticals that often cause debilitating side effects and compound the problem. Thus, while patients may have symptomatic relief, their underlying medical problems continue to progress. Alternatively, Functional Medicine addresses the root causes of health issues, helping patients heal from disease. Functional medicine optimizes health by addressing the disease processes, minimizing symptoms and helping to decrease the need for pharmaceutical medications. Functional medicine physicians use a personalized, whole-body approach to achieving the best treatment plan for patients by assessing the biochemical, nutritional and emotional contributors to disease. These providers use conventional, alternative, prescription, non-prescription and lifestyle treatments to provide a comprehensive approach to treating disease and optimizing health. Health Issues Start with Inflammation The root of all health issues lies in inflammation, whether the issue is a disease like cancer, high cholesterol, diabetes or autoimmunity; or whether it is a symptom

like fatigue, brain fog, weight difficulties, anxiety, depression, cognitive decline, joint aches or headaches. Where the inflammation manifests itself in the body is determined by a person’s genetic makeup. Factors such as stress, diet, infection, environmental toxins, blood sugar imbalances, and heavy metals can turn genes on or off, thus affecting the body’s various physiological processes in ways that can lead to disease. Inflammatory cytokines, chemicals involved in the inflammatory process, are produced which lead to further damage and inflammation. This has been one of the underlying factors of moderate to severe COVID19. While it was once thought that someone was doomed by their genetic makeup, it is now believed that 80% of the etiology of disease is due to non-genetic, lifestyle factors. Diet, sleep, exercise and stress management are huge contributors to health. Knowing that these things are in a person’s control can give much hope for improvement and recovery. Food Can Contribute to Inflammation While food is the basis for nutrition, it is also a huge contributor to inflammation. The Standard American Diet is filled with processed and nutritionally depleted foods, additives, inflammatory oils, hormones and environmental toxins. These overburden the liver detoxification pathways and directly interfere with the absorption of nutrients. Decreased digestive enzymes due to aging, infection, cholecystectomy,

and malnutrition compounds the lack of absorption and breakdown of food particles. If foods are not broken down properly, this can lead to overgrowth of bacteria in the gut, food sensitivities, and the depletion of amino acids that are necessary as the building blocks of all proteins and enzymes in the body. Nutrient depletion can be the cause of fatigue, headaches, pain, brain fog and other symptoms due to the inability to produce energy and enzymes for proper physiological function. In addition to being responsible for the absorption of nutrients, the gut houses the microbiome and a large component of our immune system. The microbiome has huge impacts on everything from metabolism to mood. Correcting imbalances of the microbiome or removing pathogens in the gut can help relieve many symptoms. Stress and Your Immune System Stress is a big factor in disease. Whether the stress is real or imagined, the body responds by secreting cortisol. Cortisol will interfere with blood sugar regulation, neurotransmitters, the thyroid (responsible for metabolism) and the immune system. This can manifest as difficulties with sleeping, weight problems, fatigue, pain, depression, memory issues and anxiety, among other symptoms. Helping to regulate the stress response and boosting the immune system with the proper nutrients and supplements can help prevent infections and help recovery from ongoing problems. www.NaturalNutmeg.com

Stress, gut issues, inflammation, and exposure to environmental toxins can overburden the liver and its ability to detoxify. Many nutrients and vitamins are necessary for the liver to function properly. Assessing and optimizing liver function is imperative to obtaining maximal health and to minimizing the effects of aging. Functional Medicine practitioners use the most up-to-date tests to evaluate stress, the gut, the liver detoxification pathways, neurotransmitters, nutrition and environmental toxins. By identifying imbalances, deficiencies and infections, these providers create individualized treatment plans to help patients feel better and address the underlying causes of their symptoms and disease processes. Functional Medicine provides hope to those who are suffering and helps people achieve optimal health. The Center for Holistic Healthcare welcomes Jennifer Letitia, M.D. as a Functional Medicine physician. Originally a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon and Hand Surgeon, Dr. Letitia first became aware of Functional Medicine through her own health journey. She decided to change fields in medicine because she felt that as a Functional Medicine provider she could help others who, like her, had fallen through the cracks of mainstream medicine. She believes that her own experiences have made her a far more compassionate practitioner. Minimizing suffering and helping others to achieve a meaningful and satisfying existence are her mission. The Emotional and Energetic Roots of Pain and Illness By Stuart Alpert, PsyD, LCSW

O

ur pain and illness are not randomly created. We are all complex, multidimensional organisms. We know that a physical ailment affects us emotionally, but left unattended an emotional or spiritual wound can also manifest itself physically. All processes in this dynamic, multi-layered system occur at the same time, every event in every cell of our body is known to every other cell at the same time. Even our memories are stored not only in our brain, but in every cell. Biological Responses to Emotional Trauma Our biological responses to emotional trauma and stress are very sophisticated. At the same time, we need to understand that our targeted areas of pain and illness are not random. Our specific pains and illnesses are the result of life’s emotional trauma and our responses to them, all beginning in childhood. An example to illustrate this phenomenon is the way your body freezes when you are severely traumatized by violent emotional and/or physical abuse. For example, imagine that as an infant, rather than having an emotional and energetic welcome into the world, you are met with a threat of annihilation. Time stands still, your biological systems go on high alert and you can’t feel anything. Your infantile perception diminishes and you can hardly breathe. Our frozenness indicates that our body has gone into a state of shock and the dissociation indicates that a part of our spirit has left our body. Frozenness and dissociation are the ways we survive the violence. Frozenness becomes an actual reality in our body as we have to lock our joints against the threat of annihilation. Imagine an overwhelming threat coming toward you. You can feel how you shrink in your body and contract your muscles and joints as a response to the threat. These negative experiences are now frozen in time and still live in your body. They create chronic tension and stress reactions, which, if left unattended over time, will lead to muscular pain or a breakdown of joints. Perhaps later in life we discover we now have developed arthritic symptoms.

Body Centered Psychotherapy Body Centered psychotherapists understand that energy and matter are convertible. That is, energy can be converted to matter and matter can be converted back to energy (Einstein’s theory: E=mc2). To illustrate this, let’s look at tumors, breast masses, and other illnesses and diseases which are results of energy that has been blocked and left to stagnate. With the introduction of healing energy, light, love, comfort, or acceptance into the area of blocked matter; In-Depth Body Psychotherapy and Subtle Energy Healing therapists have had significant success in converting matter back to energy. This has resulted in masses disappearing before scheduled surgery as well as the remission and/or cure of many illnesses and diseases. We hold the belief that every illness and disease is a message from spirit about either the physical, emotional and/or spiritual healing that needs to take place. The illness and disease are also messages about the location where energy is blocked in the body and a way for our spirit to direct our attention to the block. As spirit seeks to heighten our awareness of where we are blocked, we have the opportunity to heal a spiritual/emotional wound and thus allow the blocked energy to be converted back to flowing, healthy energy. Parasympathetic and Sympathetic Nervous Systems Let’s take a quick look at the Parasympathetic and Sympathetic Nervous Systems, whose balance is negatively affected by chronic stress. So many of us in this rushed world suffer damaging effects of stress, such as high blood pressure, insomnia, anxiety, fatigue, and autoimmune disorders, to name a few. Healing energy can help regulate our adrenal system, which is taxed by stress. It can calm the automatic fight or flight response that stress induces in our brain. In fact, healing energy can even create an increase of neural connections to the pre-frontal cortex. The pre-frontal cortex is the part of the brain which mediates the response of the limbic or emotional brain with the fight and flight response of the www.NaturalNutmeg.com

17

reptilian brain. This allows us to know when something is truly dangerous rather than automatically responding as if everything is potentially dangerous. Rewiring Our Brain and Healing Unfortunately, we tend to get stuck in our past habit of defending against experiencing our “old trauma” and instead living as if we are in constant danger now. As we work with and heal our past trauma we can rewire this unhealthy old outdated way of defending ourselves. The rewiring of our brain and the rebalancing of our nervous systems enables us to live in a more balanced and healthy manner. We now find ourselves in a healing state of being, connecting to a higher level of functioning, and to our own deeper place of wisdom that also connects us to universal consciousness. Although our therapists can help to guide clients toward deep healing, a full physical healing is not always a certainty. Sometimes the healing is of an emotional or spiritual nature. The extent of the physical healing depends on several factors, the message our Spirit is sending to us and the pre-existing level of physical deterioration. Also critical is our ability to live into and through our resistance and into our emotional hurts and trauma and the old embedded negative energies from the original emotional abuse. As we begin the therapeutic process, improvement is possible even when there is physical deterioration. We don’t know in advance the nature and extent of the healing that can and will occur. In order for any healing to take place we need to suspend judgments and obsessions about what can be accomplished and allow our body and emotions to realign into a quieter, calmer state of being. Submitted by Stuart Alpert, Psy.D., LCSW. The Benefits of Himalayan Salt Stone Massage By Kristina Mozzicato, LMT, BCTMB

Y

ou may have heard of Hot Stone Massage but a novel treatment called Himalayan Salt Stone Massage has become popular in recent years primarily due to the type of stones used. Authentic Himalayan Sea Salt is characteristically pink and sourced from one of the most pristine environments in the world, naturally occurring salt caves deep below the Himalayan Mountains in Pakistan. This particular salt has been traditionally used in Eastern cultures. It is only recently that the Western world has begun to embrace its healthboosting properties. Pink Himalayan Salt contains 84 minerals and trace elements including calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and iodine. It is a healthy alternative to traditional table salt. In addition to its internal uses, Himalayan Salt is used in natural skincare products, bath salts, and deodorants. There are salt “nebulizers”, which support the respiratory system and mimic the benefits of inhaling the air in a salt cave. Salt stone lamps emit negative ions which can aid in relaxation due to the Himalayan Salt negating harmful electromagnetic vibrations in our environment. This can result in anxiety, insomnia, and a lack of concentration.

Traditional Hot Stone Massage Traditional Hot Stone Massage uses Basalt stones which originate from volcanic rock. These stones are shaped and smoothed and are typically immersed in a crockpot of water, heated at a temperature of 110˚-145˚F. The stones may be placed along the spine, on top of a towel (so as not to burn the client’s skin), and are also used to massage the body. The heat aids in muscle relaxation. Anyone suffering from muscle pain, stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia may benefit from receiving a hot stone massage. This results in strengthening the immune system, reducing blood pressure, and enhancing mood. Himalayan Salt Stone Massage Himalayan Salt Stone Massage provides all of the benefits of Traditional Hot Stone Massage and more. The Himalayan Salt stones are 100% pure pink Himalayan salt that is mined from the Himalayan Mountains in Pakistan through socially and environmentally responsible methods. The stones are hand-carved and are smooth, but not as smooth as Basalt stones which results in gentle exfoliation, thereby promoting smoother and softer skin. During

the massage, the skin and muscle tissue absorb the 84 minerals that are inherent in the Himalayan Salt Stones. It is widely known that magnesium has a relaxing effect on stressed muscles, ligaments, and tendons. The absorption of these minerals can help balance skin conditions and support a healthy immune system. Massage in itself is detoxifying since it increases the circulation of blood and lymph throughout the body. It is believed that the minerals in the Himalayan Salt Stones aid in further eliminating toxins, making the detoxification even more effective. Himalayan Salt Stones emit negative ions (especially when heated), which assist in neutralizing positively charged free radicals that can be responsible for chronic inflammation in the body. Himalayan Salt Stone massage can assist in balancing the body’s electromagnetic field. Every day we are exposed to electronic devices, cellphones, TV’s, computers, and microwaves, which can disrupt the natural energy flow within our bodies. Stress, fatigue, and a suppressed immune system can result from constant exposure to this electromagnetic radiation.

Unlike the Basalt Stones used in Traditional Hot Stone Massage, the Himalayan Salt Stones are heated in a salt crystal bowl LED lamp (using little electricity), without water (as water would degrade the stones over time). Since water is not used in heating or cleaning them, this makes the Himalayan Salt Stone Massage a more eco-friendly treatment. As the stones are heated in the lamp, they emit negative ions to reduce oxidative stress in the treatment room and purify the air. Himalayan Salt Stones retain heat especially well and do not become scorching hot, as Basalt Stones immersed in water can. It is usually necessary to cool down the Basalt Stones for several minutes after removing them from the crockpot to ensure that they will not burn the client’s skin.

Himalayan Salt is naturally antimicrobial and antibacterial due to its iodine content. This makes it ideal for massage since it helps remove any bacteria on your skin that could cause future breakouts. Even though the stones are inherently antibacterial, it is still necessary to wipe them down with an EPA registered disinfectant. Any type of hot stone massage can be safely experienced by the majority of people, but there are some contraindications. People who are affected by the following should not receive a hot stone massage: uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, neuropathy (decreased pain sensitivity), taking blood thinners, broken/ irritated skin, recent surgery or car accident, and pregnancy. It is evident that Himalayan Salt Stone Massage can provide a multitude of benefits to the massage client including very deep relaxation, improved sleep, reduced inflammation, detoxification, purified air, and protection from electromagnetic pollution. It alkalizes, re-mineralizes, nourishes, and exfoliates the skin. Book a Himalayan Salt Stone Massage for a blissful experience, you won’t regret it! Are You Detoxing Your Breasts? By April Beaman, RDH, CTT

R

esearch has shown that up to 90% of cancers including breast cancer are from lifestyle and environmental factors, which leaves 10% relating to genetic predisposition. Your genetics do not determine your destiny! Even if you have a genetic predisposition or carry a gene that gives you a higher risk for certain cancers or disease, YOU HAVE THE POWER to change your lifestyle habits and environment so those genes are not expressed. One way to implement this lifestyle habit is through detoxification practices. Most people have heard of detoxing the colon, liver, kidneys, or even a whole-body detox, but rarely do you hear about detoxing the breasts. Below are five tips that focus on lymphatic movement to help with breast detoxification. Breast Tissue and Lymphatic System Breast tissue is comprised of many intricate parts including adipose tissue,

lymph nodes and lymph. The lymph is a colorless fluid that’s present just under the skin’s surface and it flows through the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system, which is part of the immune system, has many functions. Protecting the body from illness-causing invaders; removing cellular waste; filtering and carrying away bacteria, viruses, cancer cells, and other toxic substances, just to name a few. The breasts are filled with lymphatic pathways that are dependent on healthy circulation. When lymph gets “clogged” the breast tissue becomes congested and the lymph flow can become stagnate. This is one way toxic substances like chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, and xenoestrogens can store up in the breast tissue, creating toxicity and potential future concerns. In addition, breast tissue that is not properly detoxified can eventually form cysts known as fibrocystic breasts and can cause premalignant

and malignant cells to develop. Because the lymphatic system does not have a pump like our cardiovascular system, it depends on our movement to keep it circulating and flowing properly. Five Tips for Breast Detoxification 1. Rebounding. Jumping on a mini trampoline is one of the best ways to circulate healthy lymph flow and help promote detoxification. Try rebounding 5-10 minutes twice daily for optimal results. Light bouncing is best. If you do not have a rebounder, take a walk outside for 15-20 minutes or more. Make sure to move your arms as you walk to facilitate upper body lymphatic flow. 2. Ditch your antiperspirants. It’s so important for breast health! The use of antiperspirants prevents sweating. However, sweating is a very important way to release some of the toxins that we www.NaturalNutmeg.com

21

are exposed to daily from our personal care products. Preventing the sweating process prevents the breast tissue from draining properly into the axillary nodes and can create a toxic buildup. Using a healthy, all natural, aluminum free deodorant is a great start to encourage proper lymph flow. Just like your food label, the deodorant you choose should have a short list of ingredients. Look for brands with baking soda or charcoal. These ingredients will neutralize the bacteria that causes body odor but still allows the sweating process that is necessary for detoxification.

3. Castor oil packs. You may have heard of castor oil packs for liver detoxification, but this method can also aid in the detoxification of breast tissue. Castor oil is traditionally used to support the lymphatic, circulatory and immune systems. It has unique immune enhancing effects because of its ability to improve lymphatic flow. Castor oil packs are also great for sore, tender breasts and clogged lymph. This detoxification method can be done 1-2 times a month or as often as you feel is necessary. (Consult with your physician if you’re currently dealing with a breast challenge for how often this should be performed relating to your circumstance). When choosing a castor oil, it’s best to purchase one that is organic, cold pressed, hexane free and stored in glass. 4. Dry skin brushing. The skin is the largest organ and it’s responsible for a quarter of the body’s detoxification, so its ability to remove toxins via the lymph system is very important. Dry skin brushing also improves skin appearance due to the shedding of dead skin cells. What does this have to do with breast health? When lymphatic fluid begins to slow down or become stagnant, estrogens from the breast area cannot be removed and inflammation results. This can cause breast tenderness, lumps in the breast or under the arms. Dry brushing is best done in the morning before showering. Always choose a natural bristle brush, apply light pressure when brushing, and focus on areas where lymph nodes are concentrated such as the upper outer portion of the breasts and the armpits. 5. Go wireless. Stop wearing underwire bras and bras that are constricting. Underwire bras are very constricting to breast tissue and clog the lymph in this area. If your breasts are tender, red, or your shoulders have indentations when

you take your bra off, this is a sure sign that your bra is too restrictive, and the lymph is not circulating properly. In addition, electromagnetic devices in your environment such as your cell phone are attracted to metal. So, if you’re wearing an underwire bra, your breasts are acting like magnets to EMFs (electromagnetic frequencies). Some research suggests that constant exposure to EMF’s can cause molecular changes within the cells, possibly leading to cancer formation. I suggest keeping a bra off as much as possible to let the breasts be free. Research has shown that women that wear bras all day/night or most of the day have the highest instances of breast cancer. Breasts were made to move around and bounce, that is how the lymph moves. Constricting bras shut down this flow. I understand going braless may not be your cup of tea so when choosing a bra makes sure it’s wireless and it is fitted for you. I recommend Ruby Ribbon for my thermography clients. This company offers an alternative to traditional underwire bras that are supportive without the constriction, and you have your own personal stylist to help fit you properly.

The addition of these simple self-care, detoxification methods can be a valuable step in keeping your breasts healthy for a lifetime. My mission as a medical thermographer is to empower women to take a proactive approach with their breast health. I have seen many women over the years simply implement a dry skin brushing routine or change the type of bra they’re wearing, and they’ve felt a significant difference with their breasts. The one thing I love is that they can also see these positive breast improvements on their next thermogram. April Beaman, RDH, CTT is a Medical Thermographer, certified by the Professional Academy of Clinical Thermology and a professional member of Breast Thermography International. Why Do Women Find It Hard to Ask for Help? By Eilis Philpott

I

was recently asked this question, “Why do women find it hard to ask for help?” I want to qualify my answer by sharing that finding it hard to ask for help is not just a difficulty for women, men also share this issue. However, I believe that women have additional and/or differing layers of baggage to clear in relation to this topic. Culturally, women have been taught from an early age that their role is to be the caregiver and nurturer of the family, usually at the cost of their individuality. We don’t have to go too far back in our history to see that women were considered second class citizens, with no individual rights or identity. Young women were forced into the role of striving for and making a “good” match, which benefited the family as a whole. Once married, their husband controlled them and any assets they brought to the union. Thus, asking for help probably was not even in the realm of conscious awareness for many women. The Field of Epigenetics More recently there have been studies in the field of Epigenetics that show that lifetimes of trauma and belief systems are passed down through the generations in the DNA of each individual. To explain this phenomenon further, these studies have swept away the idea that having a particular gene produces a particular result. It turns out that many genes work together to influence a single outcome. Even more important, genes are not fixed. Life events can trigger biochemical messages that turn them on or off (by a process called methylation), making them sensitive to mes24

sages from the body. While life events can change the behavior of the gene, they do not alter its fundamental structure. Methylation patterns, however, can be passed on to children. This phenomenon is what is known as epigenetics. Stressful experiences affect gene expression in humans. Family tragedies can send shock waves from one generation to the next and it can be important to explore three or more generations of family history to understand the mechanism behind patterns of trauma that repeat. Generations of Family Trauma When members of our family have experienced unbearable traumas, or have suffered from immense guilt or grief, the feelings can be overwhelming and can escalate beyond what they can manage or resolve. Sometimes pain submerges until it can find a pathway for expression or resolution. That expression can be found in the generations that follow and can resurface as symptoms that are difficult to explain. Events such as the death of a parent or infant, a child given away, the loss of a home, or even the withdrawal of a mother’s attention can all have the effect of collapsing the walls of support and restricting the flow of love in a family. Discovering the origin of these traumas and long-standing family patterns can finally be laid to rest. How women deal with trauma of any kind can be directly related to their family history and whether that trauma was dealt with appropriately at the time. Most often it was buried because survival was the number one priority at the time. Thus, women were not encouraged to or even taught how to ask for support.

Societal and Generational Expectations I believe we could take the question even further and ask why do women find it hard to receive? Why do women feel it is selfish for their needs to be met? Why do women feel it is part of their “job” to put everyone else first? The answers to these questions can be traced to societal and generational expectations as stated above, but also to the individual experiences of each woman in her own life. What if asking for help is perceived as making yourself vulnerable. What if you have experienced/learned that allowing yourself to be vulnerable actually puts you in harms way both physically and emotionally? So many what if’s… Are women doomed to never be able to ask for their needs to be met, to never put themselves first on their list, to never learn how to love and nurture themselves? Of course not. If there is a struggle with receiving support, give yourself permission to ask for help, to clear what is getting in the way, and remind yourself that you cannot give from an empty vessel. Can an Alkaline Diet Promote Greater Wellness? By Erika Dworkin, Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition®

H

ave you been searching for a diet that can promote your overall wellness? The overly simplistic acid-alkaline theory of disease essentially maintains that excess acid accumulation in the body causes many diseases. While the advantages of an alkaline (high pH) diet is controversial, and researchers agree that further studies to explore its exact effects are warranted, a growing body of evidence indicates that it promotes cellular health and contributes to the prevention of certain diseases. Especially if you suffer from chronic pain, experimenting with this type of diet for six months could be beneficial.

For the body to function properly, it must maintain the proper balance of acidity and alkalinity (pH) in the blood and other body fluids. There is accumulating evidence that certain disease states...are influenced considerably by dietary acid-alkaline balance. ~ The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (3rd Ed.), Michael T. Murray, ND, and Joseph Pizzorno, ND (2012)

The Role of pH in the Body pH (the “power of hydrogen”) is a measure of the hydrogen ion concentration in solution. The pH scale ranges from 1-14, where a pH of 7 is neutral, below 7 is acidic, and above 7 is alkaline/base. To survive, the body requires and thus maintains through the lungs and kidneys, a tightly controlled slightly alkaline ~7.4 pH level in blood serum, including that in the veins and arteries. The natural level and function of pH in the body’s cells and organs, however, vary considerably: Skin [4-6.5 – protects from harmful microbes (bacteria/parasites/fungi/viruses)]; Urine (4.6-8.0 – limits microbe overgrowth); Stomach (1.35-3.5 – assists digestion; protects against microbes); Bile (7.6-8.8 – neutralizes stomach acid; aids in digestion); Vaginal Fluid (less than 4.7 – limits microbe overgrowth); Cerebrospinal Fluid (7.3 – protects the brain exterior); Intracellular Fluid (6.0-7.2 – balances acid production in cells). Cells that are more alkaline have a greater ability to detoxify and therefore maintain a higher energy potential.

Increased acid production, the loss of bicarbonate, and/or a reduced ability of the kidneys to excrete excess acids, can cause metabolic acidosis, the presence of excess acid in body fluids. The inability of overtaxed kidneys to detoxify excess acid can cause various symptoms including fatigue, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and breathing difficulty, and the health conditions discussed below. Doctors diagnose this condition with various blood tests, including an arterial blood gas (ABG; determines blood pH and the lungs’ ability to move oxygen into, and remove carbon dioxide from, the blood), and a basic metabolic panel (checks pH balance and kidney function). First morning urine testing can also indicate metabolic status. Healthy after-rest urinary pH, which increases proportionately with the increased consumption of alkalizing foods, ranges from 6.5-7.5.

Food pH & PRAL Whether a food has an alkalizing effect on the body (the pH of the metabolic end product of the food), rather than whether it is acidic in its original state, determines its impact on overall wellness. This so-called Potential Renal Acid Load (PRAL) is assigned to 100g (3.5 oz) of every food, and the PRAL of a food portion is determined by multiplying PRAL by the total weight of the food consumed. A high/positive PRAL indicates that the food produces more acid, while a low/negative PRAL reflects an alkalizing effect. The amounts of five nutrients in foods determine their PRAL calculations. Protein and phosphorus are acid-inducing during metabolism, while potassium, magnesium and calcium contribute to an alkaline environment. Research to date supports the viewpoint that high-PRAL foods are more taxing on the kidneys (and thus on the body overall), in that they require them to work harder to excrete the acid produced in order to maintain acid-base balance. The simplest dietary guideline is to eat less acid-producing foods and the right kind of protein in the right portions (no more than 6oz of high-PRAL protein at a single meal). Thus, it is ideal to consume: (1) low amounts of high-PRAL beef, poultry, fish, shellfish, dairy, some grains, and all forms of sugar, (2) higher amounts of neutral water and raw, unprocessed oils, low-PRAL vegetables, fruits, nuts, certain beans, and Celtic/Himalayan salts (in moderate amounts), and moderate PRAL lentils, eggs, and unprocessed soy (preferably organic). The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) and Mediterranean diets follow these guidelines. For those who wish to fashion their own low-PRAL diets, the website alkascore.com can simplify the process. The Impact of a High PRAL Diet on Health Research to date has established that high-PRAL diets cause low-grade metabolic acidosis in the body, which not only reduces the body’s ability to combat and remove toxins, but also compromises cellular energy production. Metabolic acidosis is thus associated with the development of multiple metabolic alterations,

including increased inflammation and pain, insulin resistance, diabetes, hypertension and other cardiovascular conditions, chronic kidney disease, bone disorders, low muscle mass, and excess cortisol production. High acidity and certain diet components are well-known factors associated with increased risk of cancer. No studies to date establish a direct link between diet-induced acidosis and cancer. However, some researchers have found that acidosis may indirectly promote carcinogenesis, tumor progression, and metastasis at the cellular level, in concert with other factors that increase the risk for cancer, including obesity and metabolic syndrome. Dietary Supplements That Protect Against Acidosis Certain nutrients can help promote body alkalinity. Electrolytes (especially magnesium and potassium) added to water, or a multimineral supplement, can increase both blood and urine pH. Super greens/fruit powder supplementation is an easy way to provide the body with concentrated amounts of low-PRAL foods. While sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is a well-known means of addressing metabolic acidosis, it should not be consumed for more than two weeks. Although research addressing the impact of essential fatty acids on metabolic acidosis is limited, it appears that consuming a healthy balance of neutral pH/PRAL, antiinflammatory fish, flax, hemp and other oils, including as dietary supplements, would be beneficial. Healthy Fats – How About Healthy Debt? By Caroline Wetzel, CFP®, CDFA®, AWMA®

W

hen it comes to your finances, what keeps you awake at night? A few years ago, a client, Louise*, confided in me: “Debt gets me nervous.” Knowing that Louise and her husband, Will, were health-conscious individuals, I asked Louise how she felt about consuming fat in her diet. I explained that I saw debt’s relationship to our personal financial health like dietary fats’ relationship to our physical health. With the caveat that I am a fiduciary financial professional but only a recreational health enthusiast, the following is how I view debt and some of the parallels I see between personal debt and dietary fats. To help better explain debt’s role in your overall financial plan, I offer these similarities. Personal Debt – A Fiduciary Planner’s View As a Certified Financial PlannerTM, I do not see debt as inherently “bad”, or something that needs to be avoided, but view it as a strategic tool that informed clients use to achieve their financial goals. Debt facilitates access to (new) assets and can help to reduce taxes. Mortgages are a great example of this. Taking on a mortgage allows you to buy real estate worth more than the amount of cash you have on hand. The mortgage interest tax deduction is available to reduce taxes.

What I do think is “bad” is when individuals take on debt that is not priced competitively, debt that they do not understand, and/or debt that they are unable to pay. When someone is burdened with debt that limits their financial choices and opportunities, rather than expands them, it is bad. Parallel 1: Fats and Debt Have Notoriety Let’s be honest, many people fidget when they hear the word “fat” and cringe when they hear the word “debt”. This is for good reason. For years, Americans were told to live low fat and no fat diets. However, as nutritional sciences advanced and we discovered that we were missing out on essential nutrients when we eliminated fats from our eating, we were guided to reintroduce fats selectively into our routines. Similarly, liabilities have had bad press over time. From predatory lending practices to interest rate scams, there have been many unethical debt arrangements causing financial frustrations and hardship. However, enhanced regulation (e.g. Truth In Lending Act), federal tax incentives (SALT Deduction), and low interest rates designed to stimulate economic activity all exist today which help de-stigmatize debt and make it accessible when appropriate.

Parallel 2: There are Different Types of Fats and Debt The American Heart Association claims that there are four major dietary fats in the food that we consume, with some fats being “bad” (i.e. saturated and trans fats) and some fats being “good” (i.e. monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats). Similarly, there are different kinds of debt. There is debt that you want to avoid, like credit cards with double digit interest rates that you cannot afford to pay. Then there is debt that may make sense for enhancing your employment income opportunities, like college loans to cover additional education. Parallel 3: Both Fats and Debt Meet Immediate Needs Dietary fats give your body energy, facilitate cell growth, protect organs, and provide warmth. This is why healthy-fat snacks, like tahini and vegetables, are nourishing and satisfying when we need a quick pick-me-up. Similarly, debt offers you a financial or economic benefit today in exchange for future payments from you. Using a low-interest credit card for its convenience and ease in daily life, in exchange for paying off the debt accrued at the end of each month is a great example of this. www.NaturalNutmeg.com 29

Parallel 4: Both Require Attention and Care While fat is an important and essential part of a diet, it needs to be consumed in moderation, according to your body’s unique needs. Too much fat can raise cholesterol and cause heart issues. Similarly, too much debt can compromise your financial health and limit your financial choices. The types and amount of debt you assume should be carefully considered and paid off, according to your specific situation. Going back to Louise - the events of 2020 inspired Louise and her husband Will to pull forward one of their retirement goals, buying a boat. They had saved and invested for decades and wondered how they should pay for their dream. Should they sell some of their investments? Take out a loan? Using different financial planning tools, I reviewed their options and proposed a creative financing strategy that worked for them. Rather than selling a portion of their portfolio to pay for the boat, their investment accounts were left intact to grow for the future, and they avoided significant tax consequences. Recalling the analogy between fats and debt, and seeing the opportunity that this strategy provided them, Louise felt comfortable with this way forward. If you aspire to optimize your financial health, consider using debt strategically, like how you include healthy fats in your diet. If you desire making thoughtful financial decisions with a fiduciary planner you trust, I am right here. Caroline Wetzel is one of Natural Nutmeg’s 10Best Winners for Business/Life Coach. Biomagnetism is a Revolutionary Approach for Lyme Disease By Carrie Hartney, DC

F

irst recognized in the town of Old Lyme in 1975, Lyme disease is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, then transmitted to humans by a bite from an infected black-legged or deer tick. A tick becomes infected after feeding on infected deer, birds, or mice. Recent studies have surfaced that show women are more likely to have this disease than men. FAIR Health (2019), one of the largest insurance claims databases, released a Lyme disease report proving that more insurance claims with Lyme disease diagnoses were submitted for females than males, and females do not have a bimodal age distribution. In fact, between the ages of 23-50, there were almost twice as many females as males with Lyme disease. Early-Stage Lyme Disease (3 to 30 Days After Tick Bite) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that early-stage Lyme disease symptoms could include but are not limited to a gradually expanding tick-bite that may feel warm to the touch but is rarely itchy or painful, fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle pain, joint pain, swelling of the lymph nodes, and a bull’s-eye shaped rash that appears at the site of the tick bite called erythema migrans (EM) rash. Early Lyme disease does not always appear the same in all patients. For example, up to 30% of patients don’t remember experiencing a bull’s eye (EM) rash. Chronic Lyme Disease (Days to Months After Tick Bite) Many people with Lyme disease have no memory of a tick bite. Thus, the Lyme community typically uses the term “chronic Lyme disease” to describe a range of physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms that crop up after getting Lyme disease and persist for months to years after infection. One reason chronic Lyme disease is harder to detect and treat than Lyme at earlier stages is that chronic Lyme disease symptoms are more wide-ranging and varied. Chronic Lyme disease can cause early Lyme symptoms like fatigue and muscle aches, but it can also generate new symptoms that affect different body parts. This stage is usually marked by severe headaches, neck stiffness, fevers, chills, facial palsy, joint pain, muscle swelling, numbness, heart palpitations, irregular heartbeat, dizziness, shortness of breath, inflammation of the nervous system, nerve pain, and sometimes additional EM rashes.

The health risks associated with chronic Lyme increase the longer a Lyme infection goes untreated or undertreated. On the other hand, more patients are likely to recover fully if their Lyme infection is detected and treated as early as possible after the tick bite. However, when left untreated or undertreated, Lyme disease can spread throughout the body and affect the central nervous system, muscles, joints, heart circulation, reproductive system, and the skin. Medical experts pointed out that these symptoms can evolve, disappear, and reappear at different times. Combating Lyme Disease with Biomagnetism According to Dr. Luis F. Garcia, Lyme disease should be renamed to Co-Infection Soup Syndrome or Lyme Disease: Multi-Pathogen Syndrome. In his personal and careful analysis of hundreds of Lyme clients, he has observed many different pathogens contributing to the varied symptoms. Pathogens are defined as organisms causing the disease to their host, with the severity of the disease symptoms referred to as virulence. These pathogens are categorized as viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and worms and are common in Lyme patients, which Dr. Garcia has observed with Biomagnetism. Biomagnetism has been a revolutionary approach in health and wellness. It is a powerful treatment modality that targets the symptoms of Lyme disease and tick-borne infection. Using magnets represents an internationally practiced health approach that strives to achieve a bioenergetic balance in the human body. Biomagnetism was discovered by Isaac Goiz, MD. The pH imbalances can happen and combine to develop symptoms, syndromes, and other health conditions in our bodies. Because of Biomagnetism we can restore the body’s natural pH balance and renewed natural defenses can keep various microorganisms such as viruses, fungi, bacteria, and parasites, under control. Biomagnetism requires placing magnets at the appropriate points, which creates opposites charges to neutralize the pathogen and develop an equilibrium with a neutral pH, allowing them to quickly eliminate pathogens and restore the person to balance and health.

There are five types of Biomagnetic Pairs (BMP): • Regular BMPs have a specific relationship with a particular pathogen. • Special BMPs which are different than the pathogen pairs and have yet to be identified.

go deep Discover your own unique self with our 27-week Human Relations Program.

• Glandular dysfunctions BMPs are pairs that surround the gland. • Associated BMPs create more complicated diseases such as abscesses, Alzheimer’s and others. • Temporary BMPs form from being intoxicated, traumatized, poisoned, and address heavy-metal poisoning, injuries, pesticide poisoning, and more. The magnets used in this treatment are powerful and must be kept away from wallets, credit cards, and pacemakers. If you know someone with Lyme disease symptoms, take the first step needed by seeking medical help. Patients must be evaluated and treated as soon as possible with Biomagnetism and other evidence-based solutions. Repair Damaged Soft Tissues with Topical Herbs By Steven R. Frank

T

endons attach muscles to bones while ligaments hold bones and tendons in place. Fascia guides muscle groups and allows them to slide over other structures. They all have a few things in common. Predominantly, they all mostly consist of collagen. This means that when they get damaged or excessively worn they need to be repaired by fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are like little elastic-tissue factories in your body that combine a couple of amino-acids with a vitamin C molecule to produce collagen. Your brain takes the clue from pain in a region to determine that it is time to turn-up the fibroblast activity in that region. Turn up the fibroblast activity, create more collagen, repair the damage. Collagen Repairs Damage to Tissue When you pull or strain a ligament or mash/stretch or damage a tendon, you often get micro-tears in the tissue. The entire tissue may not be torn in half or may not even be pulled completely from the bone, but it will require collagen repair to regain its full strength and be able to handle a full load. When the damage occurs, there is local pain and inflammation. This acts as a signal to your brain to increase the activity of the fibroblasts. Your brain signals the liver which releases enzymes to increase fibroblast activity. These collagen factories produce the materials to repair the damage. Taking anti-inflammatory drugs actually inhibits this process and although it feels good, limits the extent of the repair. If you must take pain pills, it is best to use acetaminophen products like Tylenol to control pain. These don’t stop the inflammation process that is critical in keeping the collagen production going.

Arnica Relieves Pain In most injuries, there are little blood clots that form in the connective tissues. These micro-obstructions block the flow of nutrients and vital repair-constituents to the region. These blockages inhibit the repair. As we age, more of the small micro-capillaries in these tissues are also blocked with plaques. There is, however, tremendous benefit that can be gained by applying some simple herbs to the region. Enzymes within Arnica break-up microclots in damaged tissues and significantly enable the healing process. Also, Arnica contains constituents called prostaglandin blockers that relieve pain, and when this is combined with the natural salix of White Willow bark, the pain relief is terrific. Of course, the ability to break-up micro-clots also means that the bruising will dissipate far faster and you will get greater flow to the region. Allantoin Stimulates Collagen Growth Comfrey and Plantain contain a constituent called Allantoin which actually stimulates the fibroblasts and gets them to produce more collagen. By continually applying this to damaged tissue (ligament, tendon, fascia or bone) the process of repair will continue…for as long as you keep applying it. If you apply these two herbs to a soft tissue injury for 4 or 6 weeks, a very complete repair can be generated long after the pain and inflammation are gone. Rosemary & Thyme Increase Circulation Rosemary and Thyme increase circulation when applied to tissues and Witch Hazel increases flexibility. This is very important when healing tissues as the damaged

area can hold residual trauma. Residual trauma immobilizes portions of muscles and this increases the load on adjacent fibers and puts them at risk of damage. The increased circulation facilitated by the Rosemary and Thyme allows more nutrients to the cells that are rebuilding. If you put all of these herbs together with a little vitamin C for collagen production and a little peppermint leaf for soothing, you have a wonderful combination to facilitate complete healing of soft tissues. Using a water-decoction that is gelled, the vital constituents will be delivered transcutaneously. This gel, applied directly to the injured area, will make your damaged tendons, ligaments and fascia as-good-asnew and will actually reduce recovery time dramatically. Knees, ankles, wrists, elbows, shoulders…you name it, they will all benefit. The important thing to remember is to use it long after the pain stops to complete the repair. Support the repair process by oral administration of vitamin C, D, E and A. Steven Frank is an innovative herbalist for Nature’s Rite. Should Toxin Exposure Be a Part of Preventative Screening?

By Veena Verma-Dzik, ND, FIAMA

D

id you know that there are thousands of manufactured chemicals in the United States? These chemicals are found in numerous places; in food, water, cookware, cleaners, pesticides, furniture, cosmetic products, implants and more. We are even exposed to chemicals that are found in the air and in common household dust. Many of these chemicals are non-degradable and persist in the environment, bioaccumulating in people, and consequently impose numerous health consequences. Results of Toxin Exposure There are many toxic metals, some of which include cadmium, mercury, manganese, and nickel to name a few. When exposed to heavy metals, free radicals are produced causing oxidative stress. If our bodies are unable to properly bind and detoxify these chemicals, they accumulate throughout the body, the damage worsens, and normal health processes

within our cells begin to malfunction. Our intracellular antioxidants become depleted, and damage to lipids, proteins, and DNA occurs. Almost all heavy metals are endocrine disruptors or carcinogens. The carcinogenic effect is linked to the damage caused to our DNA and chromosomal abnormalities. According to the World Health Organization, there are approximately 800 chemicals capable of disrupting hormone receptors, synthesis or conversion. The Endocrine System Let’s do a quick overview of the endocrine system. The endocrine system is comprised of numerous glands, some of which include your adrenal, pituitary, and thyroid glands and the hormones associated with them. Making up your endocrine system are the male and female sex glands, and thus, sex hormones, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Not to mention, there are over 50 hormones and hormone-related molecules, such as neurotransmitters. With

all of these complex mechanisms, your endocrine system is responsible for growth and development, metabolism, appetite, the sleep-wake cycle, reproduction and regulating the release of hormones. Endocrine Disruptors Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that mimic the hormones our bodies make. To put it simply, they bind to hormone receptors within our bodies and alter hormone synthesis, transport, binding and metabolism. By doing this, they adversely affect development and reproduction. With regard to estrogenic endocrine disruptors, these are of significant health concern due to their ability to increase hormone-dependent cancers. Not only are there endocrine disruptors, but neuroendocrine disruptors also exist. Because the endocrine system and brain work hand in hand, the neurological system is vulnerable to toxin exposure and damage, leading to negative impacts on

Creating vibrant health is not just about getting rid of the “lump” - it’s about a complete transformation of your body, your mindset and your emotions.

How Do We Know If We Have Toxicity? A 42-year-old female came to see me complaining of fatigue and muscle aches. Her mood was pretty down and she was feeling unmotivated to do anything, due to the aches and pains she was experiencing. She was also experiencing occasional headaches which she never had before and trouble sleeping. She had everything checked and although her thyroid was slightly imbalanced and being treated conventionally, she was still not experiencing much relief. Later, through heavy metal testing, we discovered that she was experiencing all of these symptoms from nickel toxicity from a metal plate she had implanted.

Toxin exposure does not always cause immediate symptoms. At the same time, symptoms do not necessarily depend on the dose of the exposure. Some people experience fatigue, headaches, pain, and neuropathies. Other symptoms that have been reported to develop due to toxin exposure include behavioral, emotional and intellectual concerns in children, central nervous system disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, insomnia, and mood disorders. Commonly Known Chemicals and Endocrine Disruptors The list of chemicals is exceedingly long. Although there are conflicting studies, PCBs, Dioxins and Phthalates have been implicated in endometriosis. PCBs, brominated flame retardants, phthalates, BPA and perfluorinated chemicals, are associated with reduced serum thyroid hormone levels. Babies exposed to PCBs, lead and mercury in utero, have been shown to exhibit reduced cognitive function and impairments in executive functioning, processing speed, verbal ability and visual recognition and memory. Some of the toxins that are potentially associated with breast cancer include parabens, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, BPA, PCBs, arsenic and cadmium. You can find more information on the National Toxicology Program’s 14th Report on Carcinogens, cancer.gov and ewg.org. The list of toxins and associated ailments are endless. Toxin exposure is a clinically significant medical problem and has an incredible impact on our health and in increasing the morbidity and mortality rate. How Do We Limit Toxin Exposure? Here are 8 strategies you can implement today.

6. Use earth friendly, non-toxic cleaning supplies.
 7. Use a vacuum with a good quality air filter.
 8. Consider having your home tested for mold and remediate if necessary. When taking care of your health, you go for your annual check-up, have your heart and lungs examined, and routine blood work to make sure everything is in order. When you don’t feel well, you get checked out again and something may be discovered to be out of balance or not functioning in a healthy manner. Thorough testing is usually performed to give answers and appropriate treatments. Most steps are taken to prevent illnesses from developing. How else are you being pro-active in staying on top of your health?

Stay Healthy All Year with Vitamin D By Tara Tranguch, ND

V

itamin D is emerging as a good preventive measure for COVID-19 both to bolster immune response and to dampen the escalating inflammatory response, which can lead to Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Vitamin D is one of four fat-soluble vitamins (the others being A, E and K) and it serves as a hormone precursor. Precursors are metabolically inactive. It undergoes two reactions in the body to become active and our kidney makes 1,25OH-D3, which is the biologically active form in the body that functions as a steroid hormone. How Active Vitamin D is Made in The Body 1. UVB light from the sun is absorbed by the skin and converts 7-dehydrocholesterol to Vitamin D3, called cholecalciferol. If you take a D3 supplement, this is the form you are taking - cholecalciferol. 2. Vitamin D3 then travels to the liver where it undergoes a hydroxylation reaction and is converted into 25OHD3, also known as calcifediol. If you test your Vitamin D levels, they test blood levels of 25OH-D3. This is the form used for testing because it has the longest half-life in the body.

3. 25OH-D3 then travels to the kidney where it is hydroxylated again to form either: 1) active 1,25OH-D3, also known as calcitriol, which increases blood calcium levels, or 2) active 24,25OH-D3, which decreases blood calcium levels. Whether 25OH-D3 converts to 1,25OH-D3 or 24,25OH-D3 depends on the parathyroid gland, parathyroid hormone and serum calcium levels. Once active Vitamin D3 is in the blood, it can only start to work after it binds to various proteins such as VDR and GC. Once it binds to the protein, a cascade of action is kicked off that acts on: • Calcium and phosphorous levels • Bone mineralization and remodeling • Dental health • Innate and adaptive immune response modulation • Inflammation • Endocrine, glucose and cardiovascular systems. Binding to VDR and GC is necessary for Vitamin D to do anything in your body. It’s not solely your blood levels of Vitamin D3 that determine if you have enough Vitamin D3; your Vitamin D genetic pathways are also significant.

Genes Involved with Vitamin D Activity 1. VDR: Gene for the Vitamin D receptor. It binds with Vitamin D and is involved in regulating inflammation, insulinlike growth factor signaling, estrogenrelated pathways, calcium absorption in the stomach and intestines, and bone strength. Gene variants such as having the A allele in VDR has been associated with reduced bone mineral density and osteoporosis. The VDR is also expressed on immune cells such as B cells, T cells and antigenpresenting cells, which means all of these cells are capable of synthesizing the active Vitamin D metabolite. This explains the direct effect Vitamin D has on our immune system. Multiple studies have been done to assess the positive effect of Vitamin D on patients with COVID-19. One study showed that administration of oral 1,25OH-D3 to COVID positive patients resulted in less severity of the disease including reduced rate of ICU admission and reduced mortality. Research found that when Vitamin D binds to VDR, it “may generate beneficial effects on ARDS by decreasing the cytokine/chemokine storm, regulating the renin-angiotensin system, modulating neutrophil activity and by maintaining the integrity of pulmonary www.NaturalNutmeg.com

2. GC : Vitamin D binding protein in the albumin gene family. This protein is found in plasma, cerebrospinal fluid, ascitic fluid and on the surface of many cell types. It binds to Vitamin D and transports it to target tissues. Having a C allele SNP in the GC gene is associated with 49% of increased risk for Vitamin D insufficiency. 3. CYP2R1: This is a member of the cytochrome P450 family. It influences conversion of 25OH-D3 to its active form. Having the G-allele SNP in this gene is associated with lower Vitamin D levels because the formation of the active form of D3 is being impacted. CYP21 has been found to be compromised in patients with COPD and asthma. Checking Your Vitamin D Levels Concentration of 25OH-D in the serum is the common test for Vitamin D levels. This can be run through a lab or an in-office dried blood spot test. I prefer to use the in-office dried blood spot test as most insurance does not cover Vitamin D testing unless you have a specific diagnosis such as osteoporosis. I like to see Vitamin D levels above 50 ng/ml unless there is autoimmunity in which case I prefer to see Vitamin D between 80-100 ng/ml. If there is a medical history of osteoporosis, autoimmunity, eczema, being prone to multiple infections, or asthma, I like to look at the Vitamin D genetic pathways. If D3 is not being converted to the active metabolite, or if the Vitamin D related genes have certain alleles that result in reduced binding, the Vitamin D in the blood might not be utilized properly. Also, be aware that there are multiple medications that reduce vitamin D absorption including Cholestyramine, Cimetidine/Tagamet, Colestipol, Corticosteroids (including Prednisone), Heparin, Phenobarbital and Phenytoin. 1. Sunshine: Vitamin D is known as the sunshine drug! The absolute best way to raise Vitamin D levels is through sun exposure. 30 minutes in the sun around noon time with face, arms and legs exposed to the sun (no sunscreen!) can provide around 8,000IU / day.

2. Nutrition: Eating Vitamin D rich foods such as cold water fish (salmon, mackerel, herring), sardines, tuna, halibut, butter, egg yolks, lamb, beef, pork and cod liver oil. Many foods are also fortified with Vitamin D such as milk. Sunexposed mushrooms have high levels of D2 (ergocalciferol) which can be used to raise Vitamin D levels in the body. 3. Supplements: Vitamin D is fat soluble, so taking your Vitamin D supplement with a little bit of fat will increase its absorption. If you have compromised fat digestion such as gallbladder or pancreatic disease, celiac or IBD, Vitamin D will not be well absorbed in the gut. To bypass that first step of metabolism, I prefer to give Vitamin D supplement in an oil-based, emulsified form. It absorbs directly in the mouth and travels in the blood to the liver to undergo its first hydroxylation. I recommend 2000-5000 IU/day depending on the individual’s vitamin D levels, symptoms, medical history, genetic profile, medication use, diet, time spent outdoors and time of year. If the patient is severely deficient, I will go up to 10,000 IU/day for several months. I recommend 400-800IU/ day for children. As a naturopathic doctor, I treat the individual and each case is unique. In some cases, it is best to administer Vitamin D together with Vitamin A, Vitamin K and Magnesium. Please note that because Vitamin D is fat soluble it gets stored in our fat. As a result, toxicity can occur. Special care should be taken by pregnant and lactating women. Please do not self-treat yourself with Vitamin D. Get tested and work with a knowledgeable doctor. How to Feed Your Immune System By Artemis Morris, ND, LAc

F

or thousands of years, food therapy has been foundational in medicine. Growing up in an ethnically Greek household where food is vital, herbal teas, chicken broth with lemon, and cupping were used for most illnesses. It was surprising to me to learn as a pre-med student that most conventional medical schools did not teach nutrition. Because nutrition is essential, I chose a Naturopathic Medical School because they have the only accredited curriculum for primary care physicians that includes functional nutrition, personalized prescriptions of nutritional supplements, and a holistic (mind-body-spirit) approach to health, prevention and wellness. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) brochure on nutrition during self-quarantining recognized, “Good nutrition is crucial for health, particularly in times when the immune system might need to fight back.” The empowering part of ‘food as medicine’ is that we can begin to shift our health, prevent and reverse chronic disease, and promote a well-functioning immune system as soon as our next meal. Mediterranean Style Diet A Mediterranean-style diet is the most extensively researched, evidence-based way to eat to prevent chronic diseases (diabetes, heart disease, cancer); protect against neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s’ disease, dementia), autoimmune disease; increase longevity; improve mood and support a healthy immune response. It is a plant-based diet with mostly vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds. Research by Arshad (2020) found, “Plantbased foods increase the intestinal beneficial bacteria that make up 85% of the immune system. Plant-based foods play a vital role to enhance the immunity of people to control COVID-19.”

The Mediterranean diet includes abundant fresh, seasonal, organic vegetables and fruit; enough plant protein (beans, nuts, seeds); anti-inflammatory organic, whole and ancient grains; rational portions of organic, grass fed meat and fermented dairy products; extra virgin olive oil; herbs; spices; and teas. This provides your body with the raw materials for optimal physiological and immune function. Low-grade inflammation from food allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances and gastrointestinal function need to be addressed and personalized for best results. Food as Medicine There are three ways which your food can be your medicine in relation to the pandemic and your immune system. 1. Prevent, manage, reverse disease and minimize risk factors. 2. Optimize nutrients needed for a well-functioning immune response. 3. Include functional/medicinal foods such as foods high in polyphenols that can have additional health benefits that go beyond basic nutrition. Our Aging Immune System Medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease increase the risk of complications and worse outcomes of COVID-19. Maiorino (2020) found, “Diabetes has emerged as an important predictor of severity of the SARS-CoV-2, as the risk of fatal outcomes has been reported to be 50% higher in individuals with diabetes than in those without.” Our most vulnerable populations besides those with chronic medical conditions include the elderly. The functional decline in the immune system as we age is called immunosenescence. All of the factors that optimize immune www.NaturalNutmeg.com

39

function through diet are especially important and beneficial for people with chronic diseases and in the elderly. The Mediterranean diet can minimize risk factors, help manage medical conditions, and mediates the pathogenic physiological response of immune challenges. Our immune system is always on surveillance for pathogens (viruses, bacteria and parasites) and ramps up when we are exposed to pathogens or infected, which means, we need more nutrients and cofactors to fight back. The power of our immune response to clear and fight an infection depends on the nutrients we derive from our food, sunlight, high quality nutraceuticals, and other epigenetic factors. Important nutrients for an optimal immune response include Vitamins A, D, E, K, B vitamins, zinc, copper, selenium, iron, and essential fatty acids (omega 3s). Fiber, especially from leafy greens and plants is needed to feed your gut bacteria aka “microbiome”. Research has shown that like other infections, COVID-19 affects our microbiome. Dysbiosis, an imbalance of pathogenic bacteria compromises our immune response. Prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics, fiber and polyphenols have beneficial effects on our immune supportive microbiome. A Mediterranean diet can optimize your immune response because it contains high amounts of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants that are needed for an optimal immune response.

Polyphenols are antioxidants that can promote a beneficial immune response, increase our antioxidant defenses, improve blood vessel (vascular) health, and decrease tissue inflammation and cell infiltration. Polyphenols are high in fruit, vegetables, and extra virgin olive oil. A bioflavonoid called quercetin in fruits and vegetables can inhibit a wide range of virus infections. According to research by Arshad et al (2020), “The Mediterranean diet, having high antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potential antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties, is a promising and relatively easy method to attenuate the severity of COVID-19 infection.” What we eat and drink ends up either promoting a healthy system and immune response or can create inflammation and compromise our immune system. The beauty is the choice is up to us in terms of which response we want to feed. Dr. Artemis Morris is the Academic Director for the Integrative Health & Healing program at The Graduate Institute, as well as a Professor of Nutrition and Educator of the traditional Mediterranean diet. The Graduate Institute’s Masters in Integrative Health and Healing program is an experiential way to empower yourself with knowledge in sustainable nutrition, herbal medicine, mind-body medicine, traditional healing modalities (Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Shamanism). www.Learn.edu. Medicinal/functional foods that have shown additional health benefits beyond basic nutrition include antioxidants. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and extra virgin olive oil are high in nutrients and antioxidants that support our metabolic and immune responses. Antioxidants are the defense mechanisms of plants that have been forged by the same environmental challenges that we face.
