he endocannabinoid system (ECS), discovered in the early 1990s, serves to maintain balance in our bodies through various physical and cognitive processes. The complexities of the ECS have already been linked to critical functions of our bodies, such as our immune system responses, sleep, pain, and the reproductive system. ECS receptors are located throughout the body, in skin, organs, bones, tissues, and glands. CBD and THC interact with our bodies through these receptors, which is why CBD can allow people to feel pain relief and experience decreases in inflammation and is a successful treatment for certain medical conditions. It is theorized that CBD may aid fertility because the chemical structure of the compound looks very similar to the endocannabinoid hormones our body produces. Furthermore, endocannabinoid receptors have been discovered to be present in the female reproductive tract and in sperm. Some think this means endocannabinoids can either boost ovarian function and follicle maturation or help increase the ability of a sperm to fertilize an egg. An additional theory is that CBD may be a way to help achieve these results due to its similarity to our endocannabinoid hormones. Although so far there is no direct evidence that CBD has any positive effect on fertility in either men or women, these theories are hopeful and exciting, and studies are being conducted to determine if they hold any ground.

Divine Treasures: Making Ice Cream Healthy
D
ivine Treasures has been in Manchester, Connecticut, since 2007, putting a deliciously unique spin on artisan chocolate tradition—the question is, what’s the big secret to all their success? The answer: Attention to health, creativity, and true love for the world of chocolate. They use local and organic ingredients whenever possible and craft all their recipes in their dedicated gluten-free and vegan kitchen—including our signature non-dairy caramel—and even offer a sugar-free collection. Each treat is made to the standard of chef and owner Diane Wagemann, who is gluten-free and vegan herself, and combines her European training in chocolate-making with her childhood passion for the art. Our artisan non-dairy, soft-serve ice creme is another popular year-round treat offered in many flavors, ready to be enjoyed in a cone or as a sundae with all the fixings. Craving something savory? They also craft dairy-free cheese alternatives from meltable mozzarella-style to creamy, spreadable cheddar-style. Check out their freezers stocked with house-made, gluten-free vegan meals, then satisfy your sweet tooth with a decadent array of desserts like whoopie pies, ice creme cookiewiches, and brownies, sweetened with careful amounts of organic cane sugar and low-glycemic coconut sugar. Look for us in the Parkade Plaza or order our chocolates online. We aim to be a delicious haven for those with dairy or gluten allergies, celiac disease, or are living the vegan life— because no one should forfeit their health to enjoy a treat! We source only from reliable fair-trade companies whose business operations we trust. It is important to us that we run our business in a way our customers can trust, so each piece of chocolate can be fully enjoyed by body, mind, and spirit!

f any of these signs and symptoms resonate with you, it’s time to stimulate and recalibrate your lymphatic system with the Ballancer® Pro and Ballancer® Gold, the most powerful and precisely calibrated compression therapy system designed for lymphatic drainage: • Cellulite • Headaches • Weight gain • Muscle pain • Water retention • Bloating • Fatigue • Constipation • Edema/Leg swelling • Skin breakouts • Weak immune system • Itchy skin Stress, sedentary lifestyle, and age contribute to a sluggish lymph system, which is responsible for carrying 75% of the waste rejected by our cells. If our lymph system is congested and overloaded, the above symptoms will eventually appear. Even the healthiest of us can benefit from lymph flow stimulation. The Ballancer® Pro is a professional, medical-grade drainage system that is research backed and FDA cleared. It is based on the principles of manual lymphatic drainage to reduce swelling and eliminate toxins, lactic acid, and muscle soreness like no other device can, bridging the gap between aesthetics, wellness, and athletic recovery. It utilizes upper body and lower body garments each with 24 chambers that are sensor controlled and completely adjustable, and it is the only device with a built-in pretreatment mode to open lymphatic pathways. Each of the 24 overlapping chambers inflate sequentially and work to target every inch of the body and the wave-like massage motion increases blood flow while removing lingering waste products. The 60-minute treatment gently and thoroughly decongests areas of the body and helps release fluids and toxins while simultaneously benefitting our skin and tissue. Imagine Float is proud to be the only wellness provider in New England to offer the Ballancer® Pro and Ballancer® Gold systems. e love driving around with our dogs in the car. They hang out of the window, jump around, curl up on the front seat, and sometimes just go to sleep. As enjoyable as all of this is, it is more important to take care of your pooch and secure and protect it, and YOU! My dogs are not allowed to travel in my car unless they have their harnesses on and are belted in. If there were a crash, they would be 35-pound missiles that could go through the windshield or cause major harm to themselves and others. Harnesses can be purchased online or in a local pet store but be sure to look for one that has a seat belt connector—this could save your life and your pet’s life. And now that the warmer weather is here, please remember that leaving your pets in a hot car can be deadly. If you’re unsure whether it’s too hot to leave your furry friends in the car, imagine what you would feel like if you were stuck in the car with the windows up in those temps, and treat your pets accordingly. Our blessed animals are here to be adored and cared for. Please show your love by restraining them to ensure their safety. They depend on us, just as we depend on their unconditional love and companionship. Happy, safe tails and trails!

Release Your Trauma from Past Lives
By Eilis Philpott, Master Healer and Teacher
NATURAL Nutmeg
T
MAY / JUNE 2022
10 “We come into this life carrying cellular memories from past lives that may include trauma, unhealthy patterns, and beliefs that are subconsciously affecting us—all we’ve ever been through and experienced is stored within our DNA.” —Eilis Philpott
hough quantum healing hypnosis may be a term that is new to you, you are probably more familiar with the term “past-life regression,” and that is exactly how Dolores Cannon’s Quantum Healing Hypnosis (QHH) Technique started—with the exploration of past lives. From there, Candace Craw-Goldman’s Beyond Quantum Healing (BQH) Technique expands these healing realms to include an organic, individually driven healing platform. Today, with the expansion of human consciousness and technology, experiencing the exploration of past lives is achievable in a variety of ways—in-person sessions are no longer required. All around the world, people can experience future lives, parallel lives, lives on other planets, and lives in other dimensions. Some people journey to the spirit side, some people find themselves in the Akashic Records, and still others visit the Temple of Healing. The quantum healing hypnosis technique accesses the person’s higher self to receive answers and relief from emotional and physical problems. We focus on the concept that the client will go to the most appropriate time and place to address requests for healing or information. Our lives can be changed in a day—if we allow them to be.
Past Experiences Are in Your DNA
We come into this life carrying cellular memories from past lives that may include trauma, unhealthy patterns, and beliefs that are subconsciously affecting us—all we’ve ever been through and experienced is stored within our DNA. To experience these details, quantum healing takes us to even higher dimensions to include your spirit guides, higher self, wisdom and healing teams, ancestors, galactic family, and more. We go to the quantum level and beyond,
where we can request healing and clearing of the cellular memory as well as any physical issues you may be experiencing, if your higher self deems it appropriate.
Healing without Limits
The issues that can be addressed with QHH are endless—there are no limitations or boundaries in quantum healing, so shoot for the stars and leave nothing out. Through the process of Beyond Quantum Healing, you will become completely in tune with yourself in a brand-new and profoundly exciting way. We invite your higher aspects to join us on your journey and assist in your experience and healing. During your QHH session, your guides, higher self, star family, soul family, and wisdom and healing teams will be available to answer all your questions, things you’ve always wondered about and wanted to know about yourself, including (but not limited to): • Who am I? • Where do I come from? • What is my purpose and mission on Earth? • Why did I choose my family? • What am I supposed to learn from this? • Why do I always attract the same type of relationships? • Why do I have this addiction to food/drugs/ alcohol/sex/porn/shopping/gambling, etc.? • What is the source of my fear or phobia? • What is the best diet for me? • I had an unusual, strange experience/dream. Can that be explained? • Am I an old soul? How many past lives have I had? • Am I in the right career/job for me? • Am I a Starseed? • What changes should I make in my life?
• How do I find peace around a certain situation? • Why do I have this illness, and can we heal it now? What is it teaching me? Did I learn the lesson? • Why do I have this pain and what is it showing me? Can we heal it now? • Have I met my soulmate/twin flame? If not, will I?

During your QHH/BQH session, you can ask about your history of trauma, medical issues, disease, emotional health, mental illness, spiritual questions, situations, and people in your life that you need clarity on. You can ask your higher self to rewire and clear negative, looping thought patterns; age regress you; or get to the root of your shame, guilt, anxiety, or fear. You can clear old conditioning and belief patterns and call forth aspects of yourself from other lifetimes to assist you in your current life. Anything is possible—this is the magic of BQH! The answers to these questions will reveal a deep inner knowing and understanding that has always been within you and will offer you the freedom, self-awareness, and self-acceptance that you’ve secretly been yearning for and didn’t realize you’ve been missing. All healing is self-healing, and you are a powerful Being of Light! Book your QHH/BQH session today to know yourself on a level you’ve never dreamed possible. Is Sleep the Most Important Factor in Disease
NATURAL Nutmeg
Prevention?
MAY / JUNE 2022
12
By Erika Dworkin, BCHN®
“Sleep is perhaps one of the least understood physiological processes. Its value to human health and proper functioning is without question. Impaired sleep, altered sleep patterns, and sleep deprivation wreak havoc on mental and physical function. Many health conditions… are either entirely or partially related to sleep deprivation or disturbed sleep.” —Michael T. Murray, ND, and Joseph Pizzorno, ND, The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine
S
leep does not get enough respect. Some wish they did not need so much of it—they see it as a nuisance, an interference in what they are trying to accomplish in their lives. Others force themselves to push through life with less-than-optimal sleep—due to stress, hormonal imbalances, digestive disorders, or multiple other factors (technology addiction, poor diet, social demands), their bodies will not allow them proper sleep. Conventional physicians frequently overlook their patients’ sleep quality and habits. When inadequate quality sleep results in health problems, they tend to focus on prescribing solutions for their symptoms rather than diagnosing a sleep disorder. In the pursuit of quality of life and longevity, and especially because 70 million Americans chronically suffer from a sleep disorder, this critical, poorly understood physiological function needs to become more of a focal point.
Indications of Sleep Disorder
Multiple factors, including age and health condition, are relevant to the ideal amount of nightly sleep. As of late 2020, the National Sleep foundation recommends that adults ages 18–64 aim for 7–9 hours and advises that those age 65 and older may need a bit less. At least one of these symptoms is generally present when a patient suffers from a sleep disorder: (1) excessive daytime sleepiness; (2) difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep; or (3) sleep-time abnormal movements, behaviors, and/or sensations. The most common and harmful sleep conditions include sleep apnea (causes breathing
interruptions and brain oxygen deprivation during sleep; most commonly caused by obesity), chronic insomnia (considered to occur most nights and last at least one month), and restless leg syndrome.
Causes and Risks of Sleep Deprivation
The causes of both acute and chronic sleep deprivation fall into multiple categories: 1. Physical: Allergies; candidiasis; hormonal imbalances; hyperthyroidism; heart, lung, and digestive disorders; arthritis; cancer; fibromyalgia; prostate issues. 2. Psychological: Stress, depression/seasonal affective disorder, anxiety, ADHD. 3. Medications: For depression, hypertension, birth control, water retention, upper-respiratory conditions. 4. Recreational substances/stimulants: Alcohol, marijuana, cigarettes, excess caffeine from coffee/tea/energy drinks/colas/chocolate. 5. Lifestyle/occupational causes: Unhealthy dietary choices, extended and irregular work shifts, jet lag. 6. Environmental: Toxic overload, electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) from electronic/ wireless devices, extreme temperature fluctuations, environmental noise or changes. Interestingly, the very causes of sleep deprivation can also be its potential risks. It can not only negatively impact both physical and mental wellness, but it is also blamed for increased healthcare costs and poor work productivity. For example, sleep deficiency is known to compromise the immune system, setting up the body for

Since prescription sleep aids pose a variety of significant health risks, it makes sense to explore safe, natural sleep solutions that generally have no side effects. Below are a few highly effective options. • Arginine + Ornithine: There is a correlation between nighttime growth hormone release and sleep satisfaction. Studies have shown that the combination of these amino acids, taken in a very specific way, promotes growth hormone production. • Ashwagandha: Researchers of a 2021 randomized, placebo-controlled study of

increased infection and inflammation. The immune deficiency in turn is believed to impact the risk and outcomes of various chronic conditions such as cardiovascular, metabolic, and autoimmune diseases; neurodevelopmental disorders (ADD, autism); and cancer. According to a recent sleep-immunity review article, randomized controlled trials assessing the impact of sleep deprivation on inflammatory immune dysfunction and/or health outcomes are still needed. The American Sleep Association reports that due to its harmful impact of sleep deprivation on stress hormones, impaired cognitive function tends to be a first symptom, reducing the capacity to cope with stress, irritability, and anger. Many scientists attribute slower and impaired thinking, concentration, coordination, and alertness to sleep insufficiency due to what they believe is the resulting overexertion of the brain’s prefrontal cortex.

80 subjects found that this Ayurvedic herb significantly improved sleep in both healthy and insomniac patients. They found the remedy to be well tolerated and recommend that additional clinical trials be conducted to generalize their results. • Essential Oils: Some studies have shown that a variety of inhaled essential oils effectively help those with mild sleep disturbances. Experienced practitioners often recommend these and other certified pure oils for aromatic, topical, and/or internal use, alone or in combinations, to support restful sleep: lavender, vetiver (topical), bergamot, Roman chamomile (for sleep-disturbing anxiety), and clary sage (lowers cortisol). • 5-HTP: The body manufactures 5-HTP from the amino acid L-tryptophan and is one step closer to serotonin production. Although it stays in the system for a shorter time than L-tryptophan, studies have shown 5-HTP to be dramatically more effective, even at lower dosages. Experts recommend 100 mg 30–45 minutes before bed for at least three days, after which the dose can be increased to 200–300 mg, as needed. It may take 6 to 12 weeks to be fully effective. Other proven sleep remedies include melatonin, progesterone cream (for women), and magnesium glycinate. While management of a sleep disorder should be directed at its underlying cause, a number of therapies can prove quite effective. Since natural sleep aids and their doses impact individuals differently, professional guidance is advisable, especially in more serious cases. Returning to “Normal”? By James Osborne, MS, LPC
M
Recently, Covid and war have shown us that our world has changed. The lens with which we view the world has changed our perspectives. We are no longer dancing with Shirley Temple on the “Good Ship Lollipop.” We are forced to see a world apart from what was familiar and desired. We are required to deal with the reality of the present moment. Our desire to “return to normal”—the way things were—is a way to avoid and deny the current pressing realities of life. So how do we adjust to the changes in our lives? How do we grieve the loss of what was our accepted reality? We begin by acknowledging our loss, the metamorphosis we are going through, the passing or death of what we took for granted as permanent. We grieve, learn to tolerate discomfort, and seek supports. Then, we acknowledge that life/things
Embracing Change
We can build a toolbox to handle change specifically for our strong emotions, such as fear, anger, and hurt. These tools include grounding tools (breathwork, mindfulness, and meditation), self-care (exercise, hygiene, and feeding our minds and bodies), challenging negative thoughts (journaling, conversations with friends and family), caring for others, and using the creative arts (drawing, music, writing, or whatever stirs our creative selves). One way to understand change and the concept of “returning to normal” is to look at Dr. Spencer Johnson’s book, Who Moved My Cheese. We can learn several vital life lessons from the characters of this modern fable: 1. Change happens and is inevitable. 2. Anticipate change. 3. Monitor change; pay attention to what is happening in the present. Do not assume that things will continue as they currently are. 4. Adapt to change quickly, don’t blame, do not let fear stop you. 5. When you change what you believe, you change what you do. Normal is not a static condition—it is everchanging, and we must adapt or become extinct.

are impermanent. Everything changes, and not always for the better. Once we accept that scenario, we evaluate our current situation using our awareness and insight, moving away from fear and blame to a position of acceptance, seeking hope, freedom, and gratitude. We focus on our personal strengths, priorities, and values, seeking what is positive in our new situation. These actions require that we be flexible, face our fears, and assess what is in our control—our attitudes, behaviors, and responses. We cannot compare current life to yesterday. We must stay present in the moment, being aware of what is transpiring.

any of my recent conversations have involved the question, “When will things return to normal?” I am incredibly interested in these conversations. I always find myself asking, “What do you mean by returning to ‘normal’”? Do you mean returning to the way things were before—familiar, desired, or natural? I recall an incident I encountered as a young therapist over 40 years ago. I was meeting with a patient diagnosed as bipolar whose doctor had requested that I meet with her to convince her to take her medication. I explained that lithium was a salt that would reduce the highs and lows that she was experiencing and keep her in the normal range. She replied, “Normal is a setting on a washing machine. Do I look like a &#!*% washing machine to you?!” The challenge with the concept of normal is there is an assumption that things remain constant, consistent, and steady. It misses the observations of Heraclitus: “The only thing that is constant is change” and “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”

t is rather well known that thermography is incredibly effective in screening for breast cancer—it does not expose the body to radiation, is painless, noninvasive, and aids in detecting inflammation, disease, and cancer. However, thermography can also be used as a naturopathic screening: a proactive, whole-body approach to wellness.
The Science behind the Screenings
Thermography measures the infrared radiation (heat) that emits from the surface of the body. Areas of abnormality, pathology, or disease will be observed as either hot or cold depending on the metabolic activity. An ultrasensitive thermal camera and a sophisticated computer are used to convert the infrared heat into electrical impulses that are visualized in color, known as a thermogram. In a normal, healthy state, the body has a thermal symmetry that should stay stable over a lifetime; asymmetrical patterns emerge only when some type of pathology develops and can be easily identified. When used as a screening tool, thermography allows the visualization of the most subtle temperature differences in the body. The asymmetry seen on a thermogram helps identify suspicious areas and aids in the earlier detection of disease.
Not Just for Breast Health Anymore
Although thermography is best known for imaging and assessing breast health, it has a wide range of other applications due to its ability to view inflammation—a precursor to many diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and cancer. Whether looking at the lymphatic or cardiovascular system or at specific areas of the body such as the oral cavity or the breasts, a thermogram views these as one system—the whole body. Some of the benefits of whole-body thermography screening include:
• Immune Dysfunction, Chronic Fatigue, and Fibromyalgia: High levels of heat detected in the upper thoracic region of the spine can indicate immune dysfunction, whereas chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and aching joints correlate to cooler patterns in that area. • Digestive Disorders: Crohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome, among others, may be discovered earlier, allowing you to put a treatment plan in place before the condition worsens. • Dental Issues: Gum disease, TMJ, or an infection will show on thermal scans, again allowing more effective early treatment. • Sinus Issues and Headaches: Significant areas of heat on the forehead or sinus region are indicators that the correlating systems in your body are not functioning properly. • Neck and Back Pain: Scans of the affected area reveal thermal pain patterns, allowing for faster relief. Restorative care that more precisely targets the correct area can then be implemented. • Arthritis: Helps identify early signs of arthritis and differentiate between osteoarthritis and more severe forms, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Treatment strategies can therefore be started at an earlier stage, before experiencing significant degeneration. • Other Conditions: Thyroid dysfunction, carpal tunnel syndrome, neuropathy, ligament/muscle tears, herniated discs, nerve problems, stroke screening, testicular disorders, and more. There is never a better time than the present to make lifestyle changes for disease prevention, improving your lifestyle and increasing your immunity, even if you are completely healthy. The information gained from a thermogram is valuable to men and women of all ages, and most importantly, getting a thermography screening is a giant step in the right direction toward improving your health.

ave you ever thought about how amazing and intricate the human body is? How our hearts beat, how our cells communicate, how all the physiological things happen minute by minute that we have no conscious awareness of or control over? In fact, these all-important functions are withdrawn from the domain of our conscious mind by design. Can you imagine if you actually had to think about making sure your heart is beating regularly? Every function of your body is governed by your conscious and subconscious mind— before you can move a muscle, your brain directs your body to move. Your subconscious mind keeps all your vital processes working during the day and while sleeping. Therefore, it makes sense that the mind controls all the bodily functions, including new cell growth, metabolism, replacing old tissue, and eliminating dead or diseased cells. What image are you holding in your mind? Is it one of sickness or fear? If so, you will reproduce that in your physical reality. If you think your physical organs hold the power, you depend on them and make yourself a slave to your body. When an organ ceases to function properly, the common solution is to “fix” the organ, when the part that truly needs “fixing” is your mind. When anything seems wrong with the functioning of your body, the first place to investigate is your subconscious mind. Your muscles are not self-acting. Look at what happens to an Alzheimer’s patient once most of the brain function is lost—they forget how to eat, how to speak, and how to move. All disease is due to the belief that the body is the master and that it can become diseased without the consent of the mind. If you believe your mind has the power over your body, you can destroy all fear of disease, and therefore, all disease itself.

Shining a Light on Lyme

“As a naturopathic physician, I believe that improving our lifestyle, nutrition, and overall health is where we can make the greatest difference in the fight against Lyme and other tickborne disease.” —Dr. Myriah Hinchey, ND
N
amed after a small Connecticut town in which it was first identified in 1975, Lyme disease is transmitted to humans by the bite of ticks infected with the bacterial spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Lyme disease is one of the most rapidly emerging infectious diseases in North America and Europe. To worsen matters, there are several other species of Borrelia that cause Lyme disease and tick-borne relapsing fever—on the East coast, 50–60% of western black-legged ticks are infected with species of Borrelia that cause Lyme disease. When initially infected, typical signs and symptoms—including fever, body aches, fatigue, headaches, nausea, and Erythema migrans (bullseye rash)—are very similar to that of the flu and can often be dismissed as such, leading to undetected infection. If left untreated or improperly treated, Lyme disease can spread to the heart, joints, and nervous system, causing symptoms ranging from stiff neck, swollen joints, and muscle pain to heart palpitations, headaches, psychiatric symptoms (anxiety, depression, and aggression), irritable bladder, cognitive decline, insomnia, and night sweats. Several factors must be taken into consideration to prevent Lyme disease: knowing where you are most likely to pick up ticks, how to keep your lawn and pets free of ticks, preventing a bite if a tick hitches a ride on you or your children, identifying the ticks that put you most at risk, promptly and properly removing ticks, knowing the symptoms of infection, and recognizing the flaws in testing and rate of misdiagnosis. While that is a lot of information, being aware of all these factors is crucial in protecting your family.
Know Your Ticks…and Don’t Get Bit!
The first step in preventing Lyme disease is something many of us learn as we begin to explore the great outdoors: avoid tick bites. You don’t have to go into the woods to get ticks—a staggering 86% are found within the inner three yards of tree lines. Trees provide shade, stone walls make perfect mouse hotels, and leaves provide warmth for mice and other rodents, who serve as hosts for ticks. Leaf removal, cleaning stone walls, and increasing sunlight past the perimeter of the lawn will decrease ticks on your property by ninety percent. Take additional precautions by setting up your children’s play area away from the tree line to reduce their exposure to the area of highest tick concentration. You can also utilize natural tick-repelling sprays that are safe for honeybees and amphibians as well as humans and pets. Spraying for ticks should be done in the early spring, summer, and late fall and should be applied to the entire lawn, well past the perimeter and into the woods. When in grassy areas, leaves, or woods, wear light-colored long sleeves and pants, and pull your socks over your pants. There are many natural tick sprays that do not use DEET but contain essential oil of chrysanthemum or cedar, which are effective in repelling ticks and other insects. Insect Shield is a company that treats special clothing/gear for outside activities (hunting, fishing, rock climbing, hiking) with tick repellent and lasts seventy washes. Regardless of precautions, it is important to perform tick checks on yourselves, children, and pets after being outside, paying special attention to the hairline, armpits, belly button, back of knees, and groin.

But What if You Are Bitten?
If you take all of these precautions and are still bitten, don’t panic—there is plenty that both conventional and naturopathic medicine can do to prevent infection from causing illness. First things first, however—you must remove the tick safely. Do not use anything to “suffocate” the tick, as this may cause the tick to regurgitate its contents and expose you to infections. Use flattipped tweezers to grasp the tick at the base of the head (not the body) and slowly but firmly pull the tick from the skin in the same direction that it is implanted. Once the tick is removed, use a clear plastic sealable bag to store it for testing. Apply hydrogen peroxide to clean the wound. Mix bentonite clay and Andrographis tincture (an anti-spirochetal herb) to form a paste and apply it directly to the bite. Cover with a bandage soaked in the tincture and let it heal. It is recommended to send the tick for testing so your practitioners can help you create a treatment plan tailored to the specific pathogens found in the

Recognizing the types of ticks that carry Lyme disease and co-infections is crucial. Most people are aware that deer ticks range in size from that of a sesame seed to that of a poppy seed, while a dog tick is much larger. Nymph ticks are harder to spot, as they are a translucent/pale color and as small as the period at the end of this sentence. It is very common to not realize that you have been bitten by a tick and to never find the tick that transmitted Lyme disease to you. These ticks are usually hidden well enough to become fully engorged and drop off without your awareness, which is how most people contract Lyme and other co-infections.

tick. Although there are inexpensive and even free resources for tick testing, the most comprehensive way to test ticks may be to use the expanded panel through www.tickreport.com. The results typically come back within 48–72 hours, which allows for timely and proper antibiotic treatment. Black-legged deer ticks are the most common ticks in Connecticut and carry multiple bacteria that can cause Lyme disease, as well as others that cause co-infections. Additionally, ticks can carry parasites and viruses, meaning that a tick bite puts you at risk for a multitude of diseases. It is essential, therefore, that the tick testing you choose is comprehensive to identify the infections the tick itself may have carried and choose the appropriate treatments accordingly.

Take a Bite out of Lyme
MAY / JUNE 2022

You do not need to have found a tick on your body or to have developed Erythema migrans to be diagnosed with Lyme disease. In fact, fewer than half of those diagnosed with Lyme have a history of a known tick bite or bullseye rash. If you develop any of the symptoms associated with Lyme disease, talk with your doctor or find a Lyme-literate practitioner who knows how to diagnose and treat appropriately. As a naturopathic physician, I believe that improving our lifestyle, nutrition, and overall health is where we can make the greatest difference in the fight against Lyme and other tick-borne disease. Inflammation plays a huge role in our ability to fight infection from Lyme—if the body is constantly fighting exposure to events or substances that cause inflammation (such as stress, sugar, environmental allergens, food sensitivities, chemicals, nutrient deficiencies, etc.), it has a much harder time when a real threat enters the body. We must focus on creating a foundation for health, which sounds simple but can be difficult to implement in modern life. Rather than subscribing to a particular diet, I recommend returning to the basics. Eat food in its unprocessed form. Limit sugar and alcohol intake. Drink fresh, filtered water as often as possible. Move your body. Create a healthy sleep schedule and take time for short mental health breaks throughout the day. Prioritize stress-relieving activities. If it is too overwhelming to implement all these at once, work on one aspect of health at a time, and build upon that. It’s never too late to start improving your body’s resilience. The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) recommends that those experiencing Erythema migrans undergo antibiotic therapy for four to six weeks. For those without access to antibiotics or aversion to pharmaceutical use, however, herbal antimicrobials can be taken internally to effectively address the suspected infection, either
instead of prescriptions or in addition to them. A 2020 study compared the efficacy of several antimicrobial and antiparasitic herbs with the controls of prescription doxycycline and cefuroxime. The botanicals with “good” to “strong” activity against Borrelia included black walnut, Japanese knotweed, sweet wormwood, cat’s claw, Cistus incanus, Chinese skullcap, and Cryptolepis sanguinolenta extract—the last of which caused complete eradication of the spirochete, while doxycycline and cefuroxime could not fully eradicate it. This research makes a powerful case for using herbal antibiotics in addition to or instead of pharmaceuticals. You may also consider taking homeopathic Ledum and Apis, two remedies excellent at addressing puncture wounds and insect bites and stings. Dr. Alexis Chesney, a Lyme-literate naturopathic physician, put together a very helpful Tick Preparedness Kit that contains herbs, homeopathics, and items for tick removal and storage, which can be found at www.lymecorebotanicals.com.
An Unusual Way of Doing Things
In a 2019 study on how Lyme disease develops, researchers found that tick saliva is not only the medium through which pathogenic bacteria enter their hosts, it also contains a mixture of proteins that disarm the body’s immune system, protecting the Borrelia from any natural defenses we would normally mount against infection. We also know that once a tick bites, the saliva further decreases normal immune function by slowing blood coagulation and other aspects of wound healing—this way, the tick can feed for a longer period while also transmitting higher loads of Borrelia. Together, the tick saliva and Borrelia further manipulate the biochemistry of the body to degrade connective tissue—collagen is rich in nutrients that sustain Borrelia, so the bacteria tend to migrate to collagen-rich areas, such as joints, ultimately making our collagen-dense connective tissue an ideal place for Lyme disease to thrive.
The Controversy of Lyme Diagnosis
Testing for Lyme and co-infections is complicated, and in acute cases, it can lead to false negatives that cause misdiagnosis and allow the disease to become chronic. Standard testing involves a two-tiered approach: an ELISA is used to detect antibodies in the patient’s blood and, if found positive, a Western blot is performed to confirm the initial diagnosis. The problem with this is that the ELISA is not a particularly sensitive test, especially during the first few months of infection, and is positive in fewer than 30–60% of patients infected with Lyme disease. The MarDX Western blot (which tests only for Borrelia burgdorferi and is used by most standard laboratories) is much

Because of the complexity of spirochetal infection, prescription antibiotics may not be a cure-all for Lyme disease. When we focus solely on killing a pathogen, we miss the opportunity to bolster the body’s own defense mechanisms. Utilizing a comprehensive approach to Lyme disease, attacking the pathogen at every step, and supporting the body’s innate healing wisdom with whole-plant medicines all help make the body inhospitable to the infection while healing the body. Addressing the immune system imbalance created by proteins in tick saliva and inhibiting movement of the infection are crucial steps in treatment. For just one example, Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) counteracts the exact modulation of the immune system that tick saliva and pathogens initiate and maintain to keep infection going. One of the immune molecules spirochetes alter in the body is NF-kB (Nuclear Factor Kappa Beta), which feeds inflammation. Spirochetes stimulate NF-kB to drive inflammation, breaking down tissues from which they need to feed. Therefore, inhibiting NF-kB to prevent excessive inflammation is an important goal in pharmaceutical drug development, as this pathway affects many other inflammatory diseases, including various cancers, COVID-19, and Alzheimer’s disease. Luckily, this is where herbalism shines. Among the many herbal remedies available to the general public, there are a good number that show NF-kB inhibiting properties and have the scientific research to support them. Among them is Astragalus

more sensitive than the ELISA and detects Borrelia burgdorferi more often, but it still gives a false negative more than 30% of the time. In addition to these issues there is the matter of timing. Due to some testing limitations, being tested too soon after a bite may not be accurate. If a patient is not mounting a strong immunological response to Lyme, it is hard to detect antibodies. A urine PCR, which looks for DNA of Borrelia burgdorferi, is more accurate. To complicate matters further, if tests only look at Borrelia burgdorferi, they will miss the presence of other species of Borrelia that cause Lyme disease. Antibody and PCR testing do not test for co-infections so you may receive a false negative, despite showing signs of infection. It is therefore imperative to be tested for all common co-infections of Lyme disease, none of which are detected by any Lyme test. Specialized laboratories like Igenex or Vibrant Wellness can be used for proper testing of all tick-borne diseases. Once again, being proactive and treating comprehensively is the best approach.

membranaceus, a legume that has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries, most notably as a general immune system enhancer. A 2020 study showed that Astragalus alleviates inflammation specifically through the NF-kB pathway and has the added benefit of being an adrenal adaptogen, balancing the body’s stress response and fighting fatigue. Another readily available natural remedy is Cordyceps militaris, a type of fungus that has been used in folk medicine to improve immune function. Its ability to modulate NF-kB was identified in the 2000s, and a recent study from China showed that different preparations (water, 50% ethanol, or 70% ethanol extract preparations) could encourage the immune system to operate in different ways. This is a tremendous development in the individualized approach to healing Lyme disease, as different people will need different aspects of their immunity adjusted to effectively eradicate the infection. In addition to its anti-inflammatory actions, this botanical reduces fatigue and is a potent antioxidant. There are many other combinations of medicinal herbs used to naturally treat Lyme disease and co-infections, but in this context the most important to discuss contain high levels of resveratrol, which is helpful in relieving Lyme-associated inflammation. Resveratrol (a flavonoid found in foods like grapes, wine, peanuts, and soy), is highly concentrated in an herb called Japanese knotweed
that not only stops the inflammatory NF-kB but also inhibits the growth of spirochetes at several of its developmental stages. Lastly, resveratrol is highly neuroprotective, which can be very helpful for the brain fog associated with Lyme infection.
Putting It All Together
The biggest challenge for those battling Lyme disease and co-infections, whether a new diagnosis or a recurring chronic case, is knowing how to move forward. Patients are faced with either apathy for their situation or unsolicited advice on how to deal with it. Family, friends, and even doctors seldom understand the multi-system dysfunction and serious emotional toll Lyme disease takes on patients, who can be left feeling hopeless, confused, and alienated, and are often told it’s all in their head and prescribed antidepressants. As a physician and fellow Lyme warrior, I have made it my mission to make sure my patients understand how Lyme develops and becomes a chronic infection, how to make their bodies inhospitable to the infection, how to bolster the body’s innate ability to heal itself, and ways to weave conventional and natural medicine interventions together to fully recover from this destructive inflammatory infection. Prevention is key: • Make your environment and your body inhospitable to ticks and the pathogens they harbor.

• Perform tick checks on yourself and your children daily. • If you find a tick, properly remove it and send it off for testing immediately. • Begin prophylactic herbal immune balancers, herbal anti-inflammatories, and herbal antimicrobials to prevent infection from the pathogens that cause Lyme disease and coinfections. • When you receive your testing results, add the proper treatment prescription, if necessary, while remaining on the herbals. Continue for four to six weeks or as prescribed by your physician and seek the care of a qualified Lyme-literate provider for further guidance. A solid foundation for health is essential to a properly functioning immune system. Work to achieve proper nutrient levels by eating nutrient dense foods and avoiding those that are processed and filled with sugar, drink an adequate amount of water, get enough rest, and manage your stress. Naturopathic physicians are excellent resources for those interested in making lifestyle changes to support health and wellness, and we are fortunate enough to live in a state where naturopathic medicine is covered by most major medical insurances. Spring Cleansing for

Enhanced Fertility
By Dr. Nicole Kerr, ND, LAc
MAY / JUNE 2022
24 “A wide array of toxins are detrimental to male and female fertility, impacting eggs and sperm directly and increasing the importance of a detox prior to becoming pregnant.” —Dr. Nicole Kerr, ND, LAc
S
pring is a time of rebirth and renewal. Buds explode everywhere and the bleakness of winter is washed away with warm spring rain. A spring cleanse can wash away the burden of toxins your body has endured and accumulated. Seen as a time of transition, spring is an ideal time to slough off the old and usher in a fresh new start for physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Cleansing for Body and Mind
Cleansing (or detoxification) practices date back to 2000 BCE and are used around the world to prevent disease and improve overall health. Historic cleansing practices have fallen out of the norm in the US, though are still commonly practiced in other countries as prevention of illness. Examples of cleansing practices include: • India: Panchakarma or five cleaning actions— purge (laxative), enema, vomiting, nasal cleanse, and bloodletting. Purification therapy helps draw out toxins from the blood and deeper tissue, moving the digestive system. • China: Fasting (chlorophyll-rich foods), movement (acupuncture, qi gong, tai chi, yoga, meditation) to decrease irritability and anger, and purge (saunas, detox teas, dry skin brushing, water, cupping, bloodletting) to help remove toxins out of the body. • Native Americans: Fasting gives the digestive tract a break to repair and recover, smudging can clear the lungs and balance the emotions, and sweat lodges help purge toxins. • Religious sects: Fasting.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the liver and gallbladder are associated with springtime; the liver controls the smooth flow of blood and emotions while the gallbladder is responsible for excreting bile and governs decision-making, planning, dreaming, inspiration, and assertiveness (if your gallbladder has been removed, think about how difficult these tasks may be for you). This organ association emphasizes the importance of a spring cleanse to support and heal functions of the liver and gallbladder, especially if you have a difficult time with decision-making or controlling your emotions. A healthy, properly functioning liver is needed to constantly rid the body of harmful toxins, medications, and even your hormones. Though TCM emphasizes the importance of liver and gallbladder function, all organs of elimination are addressed during a cleanse. The intestines are of utmost importance as they remove harmful byproducts made by the liver.
Cleansing for Fertility
Implementing a gentle cleanse prior to becoming pregnant can improve fertility outcomes and the overall health of your baby. A wide array of toxins are detrimental to male and female fertility, impacting eggs and sperm directly and increasing the importance of a detox prior to becoming pregnant. Research from ten years ago showed an average of 212 industrial chemicals and pesticides, banned over 30 years prior to the study, in the placenta of unexposed and unborn babies. Take this into consideration and understand that if you

have never done a detox, you are carrying a toxic burden from before you were even born. Give your babies a better foundation by ridding your body of some of these detrimental toxins before becoming pregnant. Consider also that ten years ago, the average number of beauty products used by women per day was 12, with 160 harmful ingredients— what is this number today? A Fertility Spring Cleanse will: • reduce your toxic burden, increasing pregnancy outcome and decreasing exposure to your future baby. • improve basic body processes: breathing, digesting, pooping, sleeping, sweating, thinking. • leave you feeling revitalized and renewed. A gentle cleanse that enhances your fertility and chances of a healthy pregnancy should not leave you feeling exhausted, run down, hungry, or irritable and does not have to feel depriving or lacking. Common annoying symptoms may occur and can be corrected with simple fixes. If you develop headaches, make a tea from a common spice you likely already have in your cupboard— rosemary. If you feel grumbles in your stomach, eat more approved food. For loose stools, increase your fiber in the form of chia and flaxseeds. Never perform a cleanse while actively trying to conceive or while pregnant, as you will release potentially harmful stores of toxins into the blood stream for removal, which can negatively impact the growth of your unborn baby. If this is the first run at clearing your environment and body of toxins, try focusing on the add-ons to prevent becoming overwhelmed with feelings of deprivation.

A good start to the detox process is a 10–14-day break from known exposures and aiding the body in gentle balancing with nutrient-dense foods. The table on the left provides some simple (though not necessarily easy) swaps. This table is not an exhaustive list of the ways you can gently improve your health with a cleanse. Rather, it is more a wholesome living cleanse you can continue even after the 10–14 days. You should always seek the guidance of a practitioner knowledgeable of cleanses and the importance of detoxing. If you are interested in a picture of the full toxic exposure of your day-today living, check-out Environmental Working Group’s website. Removing your body from the burdens it is constantly subjected to will give your organs of elimination a break, encourage you to be kind to yourself, and get you moving with regular exercise. You need to find time to heal your body and lower the emotional, mental, and physical stress that accompany fertility struggles.

The Power of Individualized Medicine:
A Case Study
NATURAL Nutmeg

W “In research studies that track total and LDL cholesterol as well as cholesterol particle number, when these number disagree… the particle number takes precedence— which probably explains why more than half the people suffering similar cardiovascular events have normal to low total and LDL cholesterol levels.” —Dr. Frank Aieta, ND
e are led to believe by most conventional doctors that the measurement of LDL and total blood cholesterol levels are the primary predictors for cardiovascular disease. If this were true, though, why is it that more than half the cases of patients having acute cardiovascular events have normal or even low cholesterol levels? The truth is, there is much, much more to cardiovascular disease than simply elevated cholesterol levels.
The Patient
There is a case that exemplifies this concept completely: The patient is a 72-year-old man with a history of repeated heart attacks and multiple bypass surgeries and arterial stenting that began in his late 50s. He decided to come see me because he felt that his current cardiologist’s approach had not been working too well and he was afraid his next heart attack would be his last. I took a very detailed case, questioning him on his current diet, lifestyle, and current medications and supplements. At the strong urging of his cardiologist, he had become a strict vegan after his first cardiovascular event more than 10 years previous and noted that he had been a vegetarian for decades before making the switch to vegan. He was also taking a relatively heavy dosage of the statin drug Lipitor (the top dosage of 80 mg daily) along with a laundry list of every known cardiovascular supplement on the planet, including niacin, flax seed oil, pantethine, coq10, vitamin E, and so on. This patient had been determined to do everything he could to prevent future cardiovascular events, which started even before his first heart attack at the age of 57. He had been taking most of those supplements and had been on some type of statin since they came on the market over 20 years ago. He couldn’t understand why he was having all these cardiovascular issues despite being so proactive.
The Tests
I performed a complete physical on him, noting he appeared emaciated with very low muscle tone but with a sizable pot belly. He mentioned that he had been maintaining his current weight for several years but no matter how thin he got, he could never get rid of his pot belly. I decided to do a complete blood work-up on him from my perspective to uncover the root cause behind his cardiovascular issues. He came back for his follow-up visit two weeks later and we went through his results in detail. The first thing I asked him was whether any of his doctors had mentioned to him that he was prediabetic, based upon a blood test called a hemoglobin A1C, which measures average blood sugar over several months. My patient was shocked; no one had ever told him that. “How can that be? I eat so well!” I then asked him to please go over with me again exactly what he eats in the course of a day.
The Diet
My patient began listing what he consumes on a daily basis: “I eat lots and lots of fruit [which he consumed as mostly fruit juice, multiple times a day] and of course vegetables. My protein comes from soy as well as other beans and legumes and some nuts. I eat lots of healthy whole grains with each meal, like corn, whole wheat breads, pastas, cereals, and plenty of brown rice. I also love all types of potatoes. I eat virtually no fat in my diet, just what’s found in a few nuts and seeds and maybe a drizzle of olive oil here and a teaspoon of flax oil there…but that’s it! I’m very strict.” I explained to him that most of his daily calories were coming solely from carbohydrate sources (even if they were from whole food sources) and that even his protein sources were comprised mostly of carbohydrates—especially the beans and legumes.

After the discussion about his prediabetes, I noted that his LDL and total cholesterol levels were extremely low—in part because he wasn’t eating enough, but also because he was taking enough Lipitor to choke a horse. And although he had low cholesterol levels, his triglycerides (the fats in his blood) were quite elevated. Once again, my patient was very surprised, believing that because he rarely included fats with his diet, he should not have elevated triglycerides. I explained that the excess carbohydrates he was consuming were being converted to triglycerides in his liver and what he didn’t burn was being stored in that pot belly of his…and that even though he had quite low total cholesterol, he had a very high amount of LDL cholesterol particles—especially the small, dense type. He had never heard of cholesterol particle number and size and wanted to know more about it, so I told him that because he was eating so many carbohydrates and was a borderline diabetic, although the particles that carried cholesterol were quite depleted of it, there were way too many of them, and they were comprised primarily of triglycerides. People with abundant LDL particles are predominantly small and dense and have a threefold greater risk of coronary heart disease, and I explained that concerning cholesterol, in his case it was more about quality and less about quantity. In research studies that track total and LDL cholesterol as well as cholesterol particle number, when these number disagree (as in his case), the particle number takes precedence—which probably explains why more than half the people suffering similar cardiovascular events have normal to low total and LDL cholesterol levels. From there, we discussed various other overlooked risk factors I had seen on his lab work, such as his extremely low testosterone levels (most likely due to his diet and the statins). I told my patient that low testosterone has been shown in numerous studies to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and that without adequate cholesterol there is not enough raw material to make testosterone or any other steroid molecule, such as pregnenolone, cortisol, and DHEA (which, incidentally, were also extremely low).

I told him since he was taking plenty of (maybe too many) great supplements I would not recommend more, but he should trade in his flaxseed oil for fish oil instead. And of course, he immediately balked. “Wait a minute,” he said. “I can’t take fish oil. I’m a vegan, remember?” My response? “Guess what? Not anymore! Your current highcarb, vegan diet is part of the reason your health is where it is right now. You said you’d do whatever I told you and the best thing you could possibly do to help yourself is stop being a vegan. Follow the diet I lay out for you, which essentially consists of eating completely the opposite that you have for years. I’d like you to switch over to a higher, real fat diet with moderate amounts of complete protein from animals fed their natural diets, such as grass-fed beef and dairy, pasture-raised poultry and eggs, and low carbohydrates from non-starchy vegetables, small amounts of fruit, nuts, and seeds, and full-fat dairy.” Much to my surprise, he looked me right in the eyes and said, “I’ll do it, Doc, you’ve got my word!” And that’s exactly what he did.

I’ve been seeing this patient now for the past five years, which makes him 77 years old—one of the healthiest 77-year-olds I know. He has not had another cardiovascular event of any kind, has gotten off all his medications, and takes only a couple of supplements. He also complies very strictly with his paleo/primal way of eating—and he feels fantastic. He not only reversed his prediabetes and high triglycerides but also his other risk markers completely. Oh, and that emaciated body has been replaced by some pretty good muscle mass for a 77-year-old, and his pot belly almost entirely gone. This case clearly represents the power of proper diet customized for the individual. I’m not saying that a vegan diet is the cause of cardiovascular disease—there are many people out there who do very well on a properly balanced and supplemented vegan diet. In this specific patient, however, I felt it was detrimental to his health and therefore a change was crucial.

It May Be Time to Change Your Dentist By Dr. Kevin Norige, DMD
Dispelling Myths
There are two primary myths to dispel regarding dental issues and oral health: 1. Cavities are caused by too much sugar 2. Bleeding gums are caused by not brushing and flossing regularly and correctly On the surface, those two statements seem reasonable as we have heard them time and again from dental professionals at our “cleaning” visits. And yes, excess sugar and too much plaque do contribute to increasing risk of cavities and gum disease. But we all know people who never brush and eat lots of sugary foods who never seem to have a problem…so what gives? The bottom line is that we have tried to be too simplistic about our approach to the interception and prevention of disease and dysfunction by trying to apply the “one-causation-fits-all” allopathic dentistry paradigm, rather than the multi-factorial, individual-susceptibility functional dental medicine paradigm. The “one-causationfits-all” paradigm is a hoax! The correct approach to preventing, intercepting, and restoring dental disease requires the more comprehensive evaluation of the root factors of disease, taking into consideration the variability of disease expression of the individual; in other words, making an individualized assessment of risk factors to tailor and appropriately develop a course of healthy actions and outcomes. That is the hallmark of functional dental medicine.
“The bottom line is that we have tried to be too simplistic about our approach to the interception and prevention of disease and dysfunction by trying to apply the “one-causationfits-all” allopathic dentistry paradigm, rather than the multi-factorial, individualsusceptibility functional dental medicine paradigm.” —Dr. Kevin Norige, DMD

very licensed practitioner of dentistry in the United States, whether a DDS or a DMD, has been trained in allopathic dentistry—the somewhat mechanical treatment of disease and dysfunction signs and symptoms (for example, cavities and bleeding gums) that affect the oral cavity (i.e., the mouth). But there is so much more to achieving a lifetime of oral health and overall well-being than merely filling or pulling teeth and scraping tartar. Ever since Robert Koch postulated the germ theory of disease back in the 1800s and dentistry became recognized as a profession separate from medicine and surgery, dental students have been taught—through a paradigm of signs and symptom recognition and amelioration—to treat dental problems as manifestations of the structures within the oral cavity. However, it is ultimately more expensive and temporary and less as well as less successful in the long term than prevention and interception of the root causes of disease and dysfunction. Rather than limiting the scope of the source and connections of dental issues to only the oral cavity, it is overall more effective to provide treatment and rehabilitation from disease and dysfunction processes in the context of how the disease relates to the rest of the body and lifestyle of the individual. That distinction is the basis of functional dental medicine: Thorough evaluation and discovery, then appropriate individualized intervention in the context of root cause oral-systemic associations. Put more simply, functional dental medicine takes into account each person’s lifestyle and whole-body health when assessing and treating oral health issues.

The Chicken or the Egg?
By Sharon Sklar
MAY / JUNE 2022
32 “We learn by observing. In many cases, my clients make conscious choices to let go of that history of learned behavior and create their own physical reality.” —Sharon Sklar
I
t’s the age-old conundrum—which came first, the chicken or the egg? Similarly, as a student of Rolfing forty-odd years ago, we debated the question, “does structure determine function or does function determine structure?” Just as you can’t separate the body from the mind and vice versa, it is difficult to resolve the function/ structure debate. I have had many years of experiencing clients prove both sides during my time as a Rolfer.
Which Comes First?
Several years ago, a client thought his teenage son would benefit from what he was learning and experiencing in his own Rolfing series. I soon got started with the son’s sessions and found the fourteen-year-old to be quiet, shy, and initially somewhat uninterested in what we were doing. A few sessions into the ten-session series, though, there was a noticeable change in the child’s behavior at home, at school, and in his interactions with me. He was more open, more talkative, doing better in school, and, to his parents, he seemed happier. The constant slumping at his desk, fists under chin to hold his head up, causing back problems and pain, had shifted. As he sat more comfortably upright he was more awake, more alert, and more attentive in school. He was happy when he came to our sessions and had more confidence in his budding personality and social life. Was his structure determining his function, or was his function determining his structure?
The same question applies to a current Rolfing client of mine. I am currently working with a woman who has a great deal of physical and emotional trauma from her past and is working through deep personal loss. She is in all-encompassing pain and has a difficult time being grounded and centered in her life. She was very athletic in her early life, trained as a gymnast and taught that competing at a high level means you don’t acknowledge your pain, you move past it. She is therefore now dealing with old injuries, old neglect and abuse, and current heartache; her body is rigid and stuck in imbalance. Over our sessions, I can see her emerging. She is sleeping better, more grounded, in less pain; her body is softer, less resistant, and more responsive to our hands-on work together.
Peel Back Your Layers
Another current client has been dealing with issues of a recent divorce and years of dealing with an emotionally abusive, manipulative mother. My client—a smart, successful woman—had heard that Rolfing can bridge that gap between psychological wellness and integrating those changes into physical wellness. After years of bracing herself against the onslaught of emotional confusion and terror, she was ready for change. Our first session was very difficult. The entire left side of her body was much tighter than the right side; it was as she was split in two. The hands-on work was very hard for her to let in, which created more resistance and presented
NATURAL Nutmeg
as pain. I was happy to see her for session two and was pleasantly surprised when, in session three, she was loose and open and even laughing through the session. This time her right side was more stuck, which signified that the layers of the body were releasing and we were getting to the next layer. To a Rolfer, the body is seen as analogous to an onion, with many layers. There is a plan for each session within the framework of the ten sessions I hold with a client. We start on the superficial layers over the first three sessions, then move to the deeper core layers over the middle four sessions. The last three sessions work with integrating all the body layers so that the client moves easily and with fluidity, not like a loose bag of bones. I am constantly in awe as I watch my clients peel back their layers and rid themselves of the past, the unwanted patterns and stuck body parts that come from injury, abuse, surgery, and years of misuse.

To sit comfortably without physical pain is a dream that truly can be achieved. I’ll watch a client “get it” in the second session when we do the structural bodywork and then the instruction on how to sit in a way that has them feel supported by their own body. No stress sitting! No back pain! No shoulders holding that position! We are not born with owners’ manuals. When you buy a new car, you can look up all the bells and whistles and know what every knob or button does. As children, we mimic our parents and have a conditioned response. If a parent walks like a duck, with feet splayed out, so do we! We learn by observing. In many cases, my clients make conscious choices to let go of that history of learned behavior and create their own physical reality. Although we may not be able to separate the function vs. structure question, we do know that change is possible!

How Important Are Hormones
to Our Overall Health?

“Sex hormone levels fluctuate throughout a person’s life and can be affected by stress, inflammation, medications, exercise, food, aging, and toxins, all of which can influence the hormones and contribute to menstrual and menopausal symptoms, sexual dysfunction, and fertility issues.” —Dr. Jennifer Letitia, MD
T
here are multiple factors that must be taken into consideration as we aim to achieve whole-body health, and one of the most important and often overlooked of these is hormones. Hormones are responsible for the regulation of many processes, including digestion, metabolism, respiration, sensory perception, sleep, lactation, growth and development, movement, reproduction, and mood. Specialized cells called endocrine glands produce chemical messengers that then travel to parts of the body where they regulate physiology and behavior; thus, they are important for optimal functioning and maintenance of the body. The body produces and circulates approximately 50 hormones in the major endocrine glands, such as the pituitary, pineal, thymus, thyroid, adrenal glands, pancreas, testes in men, and ovaries in women. Many symptoms can result from a deficiency, excess, or imbalance of hormones, including weight gain or loss, infertility, decreased libido, osteoporosis, headaches, mood swings, fatigue, brain fog, erectile dysfunction, increased risk of cancer, dry skin, diarrhea, constipation, hair loss, cognitive difficulties, heart palpitations, blood sugar issues, night sweats, changes in menstruation, acne, and other problems.
Hormones bind to receptor proteins on cells, causing a change in the cells’ functions. Factors that interfere with binding of the hormone can disrupt the function of that hormone. For example, xenoestrogens are chemicals in the environment that mimic estrogen, often at much stronger levels than natural estrogen. They can be found in water, pesticides, cleaning products, plastics, and canned foods, and, among other effects, they can cause feminizing effects in males and fertility issues in females. To minimize xenoestrogens it is important to drink filtered water, eat organic when possible, and use only non-toxic cleaning, personal hygiene, and chemical products.
Cortisol: The Stress Hormone
Hormones should be maintained at physiological levels and in proper balance. Fortunately, certain key hormones can be evaluated and treated to achieve proper levels, including cortisol—the stress hormone. Secreted by the adrenal glands, cortisol can help control mood, motivation, and fear. It is also involved in how the body manages carbohydrates, fats, and proteins and has effects on inflammation, blood pressure, the wake/sleep cycle, immunity, and energy needed to deal with stress.

The Sex Hormones
The sex hormones—estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone—and their metabolites are responsible for sexual development, function, and desire. They also play a role in regulating bone and muscle growth, inflammatory responses, cholesterol levels, hair growth, body fat distribution, and sense of well-being. Sex hormone levels fluctuate throughout a person’s life and can be affected by stress, inflammation, medications, exercise, food, aging, and toxins, all of which can influence the hormones and contribute to menstrual and menopausal symptoms, sexual dysfunction, and fertility issues. Imbalances or deficiencies of estrogen can cause changes in menstruation and premenstrual or menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, lumps in the breasts and/or uterus, mood changes, sleeping problems, weight gain, low sex drive, vaginal dryness and atrophy, fatigue, depression, and anxiety. High levels of estrogen in
NATURAL Nutmeg
Under stress, cortisol shuts down functions that are not high priority, such as digestion, immune function, growth, and reproduction. This may cause anxiety, depression, headaches, heart disease, memory and concentration problems, digestion problems, sleep issues, and weight gain. Too much cortisol production may not only lead to a catabolic state where everything is in “breakdown” mode, but cortisol production may wane over time. Furthermore, high cortisol interferes with other hormones, contributing to insulin resistance and blood sugar regulation that may progress to diabetes. Thyroid hormone production, conversion to its active form and its binding to cell receptors, is directly inhibited by elevated cortisol. Since the thyroid is important for metabolism, mood, bone health, and digestion, any interference in thyroid hormone can contribute to symptoms such as weight gain, brain fog, fatigue, and depression. Additionally, inflammation from stress, food, infections, mold, and environmental toxins can affect cortisol and insulin and decrease vitamin D, melatonin (affecting the sleep cycle), testosterone, DHEA, and other sex hormones. Pregnenalone is the precursor, or building-block, for all other steroid hormones. It is converted directly into DHEA and/or progesterone. DHEA is an anabolic hormone that helps balance cortisol levels, is a precursor to other hormones such as testosterone and estrogen, and is important for energy, bone health, and immune function. As people age DHEA naturally decreases, leading to issues with fatigue, osteoporosis, mood issues, and vaginal atrophy. Supplementing DHEA can slow the aging process and improve well-being, cognitive function, energy, and body composition.

males can lead to infertility, erectile dysfunction, and gynecomastia (breasts). Properly evaluating estrogen levels can allow for management and potential alleviation of these symptoms. Furthermore, decreased estrogen levels during the first five years of menopause leads to increased bone loss. Supplementing estrogen during this time can help decrease bone loss, though not all women need estrogen replacement since estrogens are made by fat cells. Proper evaluation is necessary to determine an appropriate hormone replacement plan. Progesterone is a hormone that is key to fertilization and pregnancy, helping the endometrium prepare for implantation of the fertilized egg. Low levels of progesterone can interfere with pregnancy and carrying pregnancies to term. Because progesterone is secreted by the egg sac following release of the egg at menstruation, it decreases with age, particularly during the perimenopausal years when eggs are not always released monthly. This may lead to too much unopposed estrogen and result in decreased sex drive, weight gain, gallbladder issues, and increased risk of breast and uterine cancer. Additionally, low progesterone contributes to osteoporosis, oftentimes occurring before menopause. Supplementing progesterone can help regulate blood pressure, improve mood and sleep, ease anxiety, help prevent overgrowth of certain cells that can lead to cancer, improve bone density, decrease migraines, aid fluid balance, improve libido and vaginal dryness, and decrease menopausal hot flashes and night sweats. Progesterone supplementation will also increase the sensitivity of estrogen receptors, thus increasing the effects of estrogen. Testosterone is the major male hormone important for sexual development and function. In puberty, testosterone is responsible for males developing deep voices and facial hair, increasing muscle mass, and developing sperm. As men age or with increased inflammation from a variety of causes, testosterone will decrease, causing symptoms such as low libido, fatigue, reduced lean muscle mass,
irritability, erectile dysfunction, obesity, depression, loss of body hair, poor memory and focus, low energy, and poor endurance. Low testosterone has also been associated with metabolic syndrome (high blood pressure, high blood sugar, unhealthy cholesterol levels, and abdominal fat), cardiovascular disease, and obesity. In women, high levels of testosterone can cause frontal balding, acne, an enlarged clitoris, increased muscle mass, and deepening of the voice. Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition in which high testosterone can cause obesity, acne, thinning or excessive hair, menstrual irregularity, and difficulty becoming pregnant. It is also associated with insulin resistance, low levels of HDL cholesterol, elevated triglycerides, high blood pressure, increased risk for cardiovascular disease, and higher levels of circulating male hormones. A decrease in testosterone in women, which invariably occurs at menopause, can cause decreased libido, osteoporosis, and other symptoms. Bioidentical testosterone replacement may help alleviate these symptoms.
Hormone Treatment and Therapy
Fortunately, specialized tests can be used to measure key hormones and their metabolites and specific treatment protocols can then be created and used to help correct imbalances. Treatment may include nutritional supplements, herbs, and prescriptions. When using hormone replacement therapy, it is important to use bioidentical hormones that directly mimic hormones in the body, as synthetic hormones are often associated with many undesirable side effects, such as heart attacks, stroke, and cancer (e.g., uterine cancer from use of progestins). Hormone therapy for estrogen, DHEA, progesterone, and testosterone can be administered in many forms, depending on the hormone and the wishes of the patient. Topical creams, sublingual drops, and implanted pellets are the most common. Hormone levels are then followed, along with improvement in symptoms, energy, mood, and libido, and adjusted as needed to achieve the

best results. Pregnenolone, adaptogenic herbs, and vitamins are often used to support the adrenals and cortisol stress response. The thyroid can be treated with thyroid hormone and/or herbs that support thyroid hormone production. In addition, supplements to decrease inflammation are often an important component of the treatment plan. When fertility is an issue, treating ongoing infections such as Lyme disease, eliminating heavy metals such as mercury and lead, and optimizing nutrition and mineral levels can be important adjunctive treatments. Estrogen and progesterone levels can be measured throughout the monthly cycle and if necessary can be adjusted to improve fertility and the ability to carry a pregnancy. Additionally, stress support efforts such as meditation, appropriate exercise, and a nutritionally dense diet free of toxins and additives provide the necessary nutrients for production and metabolism of hormones. Since inflammation directly affects hormone levels, addressing sources of inflammation such as infection, dietary stress, toxins, and injuries is also vital. There are many natural, herbal supplements that can be used to help balance hormone levels. Here are just a few examples: • Nigella seed (also known as fennel flower or black cumin seed): Nigella sativa can help regulate testosterone and thyroid hormone levels and behaves similarly to estrogen in the body. • Black cohosh root: This supplement has been used, historically and today, to alleviate menstrual issues, PMS, and symptoms of menopause. • Ashwaganda: When taken regularly, ashwaganda helps lower cortisol levels and may also help balance insulin levels and reproductive hormones. Whether the goal is to alleviate symptoms; help with fertility or libido; improve mood, energy, bone, cardiac and/or cognitive health; or to simply maximize health and slow aging, the evaluation, support, and correction of hormonal levels and imbalances are integral to achieving optimal health.

Boost Your Immune System with Massage Therapy

“People often seek out massage as part of a healthy lifestyle, but there hasn’t been much physiological proof of the body’s heightened immune response following massage until now.” —Mark Rapaport, MD
M
any of the health benefits of massage therapy, such as decreased pain and stiffness and reduced stress and anxiety, are very well known. But did you know that receiving regular massage therapy is an effective way to boost your immune system? “Researchers working with patients with compromised immune systems have found massage therapy can improve how the immune system functions,” says Jeff Smoot, former President of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA). “Those same benefits can translate to people seeking to fight off the common cold, flu, and other seasonal illnesses.” Clinical studies have demonstrated that in addition to alleviating stress and anxiety, massage therapy naturally strengthens the immune system.
Increase White Blood Cells through Massage
As we know, stress has a negative impact on our physical and mental health—when we are stressed our bodies produce the stress hormone cortisol, which attacks white blood cells and leaves us vulnerable to infection and disease. A 45-minute massage can reduce the production of cortisol, thereby increasing white blood cell count—which is extremely important, since these cells enable our bodies to fight infection and diseases more quickly. Our immune system is designed to detect foreign cells—when a foreign cell is detected, the body sends out white blood cells to combat and kill the foreign cell. This is how our immune system protects us. A type of white blood cell called lymphocytes occur specifically in the lymphatic system, a subtype of which are called natural killer cells, which defend your body from viruses. The lymphatic system
is a network of tissues that helps to eliminate toxins and remove waste from the body via lymph fluid. Movement of lymph is largely dependent on muscle contraction. Massage therapy facilitates lymph movement by compressing and releasing congested areas of the body, stimulating circulation that carries waste and toxins away from your muscles and internal organs.
Proof Positive
According to a study published in the October 2010 issue of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, researchers in Cedars-Sinai’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences in Los Angeles reported that receiving a single massage produced measurable changes in the immune and endocrine systems of healthy adults. Volunteers received 45 minutes of Swedish massage. Blood samples were collected before and after the massage sessions, and the results were significant: in addition to decreasing levels of cortisol, the scientists concluded that massage therapy significantly increased the activity level of the body’s white blood cells. According to Mark Rapaport, MD, chairman of the department, “People often seek out massage as part of a healthy lifestyle, but there hasn’t been much physiological proof of the body’s heightened immune response following massage until now.” This demonstrates that massages can do much more for our physical health than we ever thought possible. The Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine conducted a study to determine how the increased activity level of lymphocytes could affect women with breast cancer. The subjects who received a 30-minute massage three times per week for five weeks noted fewer
depressive thoughts, anxiety, pain, and anger as well as a progressive increase in energy. On a more physiological level, dopamine levels, natural killer cells, and lymphocytes greatly increased as the experiment progressed, helping the participants fight their cancers and respond better to their chemotherapy treatments.

Another key component to maintaining a healthy immune system is getting enough sleep. Most of us need around eight hours of sleep to function properly and fight off illness; if our bodies don’t get enough sleep, we are more susceptible to getting sick. Massage improves sleep by activating the parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) nervous system, calming heart rate and breathing and increasing intestinal and gland activity. While in the rest and digest state, your body decreases the production of cortisol and increases melatonin production, which directly influences the state of deep, restorative sleep. When your body spends more time in this state of rest, it is much more able to protect you from illness. It is important to note that if you are in the initial, acute stage of illness and are experiencing symptoms, it’s best to cancel your massage session to rest. Not only can massage make your symptoms feel more significant, but staying home is also being considerate of your massage therapist and other clients. Many people see massage as simply an occasional self-care “treat.” Perhaps that perception will change now that recent research provides concrete evidence that immune function can be improved by receiving regular massage.

“I do not need saving. I do not need rescuing. Because everything I need to know, everything I need to be, is inside of me and has been all along…. I am worthy of being me. I have value. I have unique skills and gifts. And here’s the thing: we all do.” —Lauri Ingram
D
eep into preparing for my “Love Your Inner Child” event on a bitterly cold, snowy weekend, I experienced one of those big “a-ha” moments. I had been working through a process of using childhood pictures of myself to connect with what I had been feeling at different points in my life. Why was I happy in this one, but sad in another? It started me journeying down the thread of my childhood. What emerged was the realization that I had built a fortress around myself, protecting my energy and learning how to survive, that had ultimately led to putting myself second and others first. And so my life of codependency emerged.
Do We Really Need Saving?
When I was young, I had a vivid imagination. I spent much of my time in nature, reading, coloring, creating stories in my head. Feeling a deep longing to “go home,” I dabbled in divination and read books to try to put meaning around my life and understand what “God” really was. Raised Catholic, I had never felt at ease in the religion but believed that as souls in this human experience, there was much we could not understand. In many cases, the stories I had imagined in my early years had a theme—that of being rescued. Someone or something coming into save me, coming in to fix me. Yet in reality, no one ever did. The true key to it all was knowing, believing, that the answers are within me.
A few weeks ago, I had another “a-ha” moment: “No one is coming to save you.” Because I do not need saving. I do not need rescuing. Because everything I need to know, everything I need to be, is inside of me and has been all along. Many years of recovering from codependence and people pleasing have gradually opened me to the realization that I am worthy of being me. I have value. I have unique skills and gifts. And here’s the thing: we all do.
Realize Your Gift
It is always within us, that gift from which we were created. That mystery of spirit, God, universe…whatever the word or essence is to you. There is a larger power, energy at work, that gently guides us and speaks to us. Take a few moments to think: Where in your life are you hesitating? What is in the way? Are you seeking permission outside yourself? Think back to your childhood: What were your passions? What did you love? How is that showing up in your life today? There are many paths to uncovering our true divine nature, to connecting with who we are as spiritual beings. Even through all these years I continue to gain new insights on my soul journey, and I am blessed to be able to offer the same modalities I employ to anyone seeking to explore life’s biggest questions. Take the leap: Permission granted to discover who you truly are.
