HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

F r o m t h e R ea d y R o o m Greetings, Well I am off to Orlando for vacation this month. We don’t plan to see the mouse this time around but go to Universal and Legoland. If you missed last months social you missed a lot. We had a visit from a sister ship USS Dejah Thoris that is based in Hartselle, AL. Thank you, folks for coming to our little shindig. This month we plan to go bowling. I am not much into sports but bowling can be fun especially the way I bowl. Hope to see you there. If you have any topics of interest you would like to see in the newsletter send your articles or updates to cohephaestus@bellsouth.net. As always see you around the ship, Capt. MarkAdam Miller cohephaestus@bellsouth.net

Ship’s Log July 14, .2012 – Social- Captain’s Cookout: If you missed this social you miss a lot. We had thirty people in attendance for this cookout which included crew members from the USS Dejah Thoris. I guess everyone was hungry. Several Star Trek Voyager episodes were watch and also San Diego Comic-Con on Spike. The Texas-Hold’em tournament was a well played game going up to 2,000/4,000 blinds. The winner was Mike Burtyk with Dennis Rayburn coming in second. We also played Dalmuti which was a close game that we had to play an eleventh round to break a tie between Brenda Miller and Roy Green. Brenda won the game and the $10 Barnes & Noble Gift certificate. Attendance: 30 people. Personnel Updates: No personal updates were sent in by press time. If you have anything accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: cohephaestus@bellsouth.net.
Starfleet Marine Corps Greetings, We are looking for new Marines to join the unit from the USS Hephaestus. BGen Neil Yawn, OIC 1 BN, 2BDE, OIC 654 MSG
Star Trek News We pay respects to the passing of Sally Ride. Sally Ride was the first American woman to go into space. Her connection to Star Trek was her recruitment through the work Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) did for NASA. Ride received numerous awards, including the National Space Society's von Braun Award and the Lindbergh Eagle. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame and the Astronaut Hall of Fame and was awarded the NASA Space Flight Medal twice. She was the only person to serve on both of the panels investigating shuttle accidents (those for the Challenger accident and the Columbia disaster). Two elementary schools in the United States are named after her: Sally K. Ride Elementary School in Woodlands, Texas, and Sally K. Ride Elementary School in Germantown, Maryland. This Anvil is dedicated to her for her inspiration in space exploration. If you were watching Royal Pains, July 25, 2012, weddings in Star Trek were discussed. They touched on all of the series. They had wrong information but it was interesting watching them geek out over Star Trek and Space exploration. If you are missing Brent Spiner (Data) then head over to ScyFy to catch him in Warehouse 13. He will be in the role of Brother Adrian, part of a religious order that protects certain relics that have bad side effects on the people who use them. Sir Patrick Stewart was seen carrying the Olympic torch on it’s relay through London before the opening of Friday’s Games. USS HEPHAESTUS
