HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our STARFLEET chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

From the Ready Room Greetings from your Captain, We are coming to the end of the year with many successful socials and events. We have added several new members and brought in several Star Trek fans. I’m hoping we continue on this successful path. We need to look at what events we want to do next year. We are already involved with R2 Summit and Hoover Library Sci-Fi/Fantasy Festival. We also have a chance to work with Magic City Con. We also have two opportunities a month at Kingdom Comic to promote the ship and STARFLEET: a new discussion group on the 2nd Thursday that will be on Science Fiction Movies and TV Programs and our regular Exploring Trek on the fourth Thursday. Let me know how you want to help in these events and will have a great year.

As always, Live Long and Prosper and see you around the ship, Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller cohephaestus@bellsouth.net, www.facebook.com/groups/Hephaestus2004/

XO Briefing Greetings, Hope everyone had a safe Halloween holiday. The month of November is the month that we give thanks for friends and family. Star Trek: Discovery has gotten better with each episode. I am ready for Season 2 in January, are you? I don’t know about you, but I’m going to need a vacation after the holidays. This month starts the holiday shopping season and it’s going to be hectic. I would like to see more activites as a group. Let’s start planning trips to the zoo (in the spring) or to the movies.

If you need me, I’ll be with Section 31, Lt. Commander Phillip Mangina, phillip3056@charter.netv

The Omnipotent By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller Star Trek has run in to several omnipotent beings throughout the course of the series. They range from non- threatening to pranksters to dangerous. Most of these beings have powers that defy rational scientific understanding and take on a magical aspect. Star Trek explains this as an evolution step that humans will one day attain.

but was able to be defeated because his power was from a machine and not internal like that of the Organians. There are several other omnipotent races that are only seen briefly: the Thasian in TOS: Charlie X (S1E7) who gave Charlie his powers; the Metrons in TOS: Arena (S1E19) who interfere like the Organians in the struggle between the Federation and the Gorns; and Gorgon from TOS: And the Children Shall Lead (S3E5) who is only powerful if people are afraid of something. The focus of these episodes is not on them but on something else going on in the episode. They appear in only one or two scenes. We do not get to know them well. Except for Gorgon they are mostly peaceful beings that interfere only if we interfere in their lives.

The first omnipotent being that the show explores is Genreal Trelene (played William Campell) in TOS: The Squire of Gothos (S01E18). Trelene is found to have magical abilities that can create most anything. The problem is that what Trelene creates has no taste or smell. He can only recreate the image of something and not the actual item. This leads the crew to believe that he may not be omnipotent. At the end of the episode it is found that Trelene is a child of omnipotent beings and is just learning how to use his powers. Thanks to his parents, the crew is saved from Trelene’s rough playing.

The best know Omnipotent Being is Q (played by John de Lancie - JdL) from Star Trek: The Next Generation. He shows up eight time in TNG, once in DS9 and 3 times in Voyager. He mostly is a nuisance but can be dangerous. On several occasions people were harmed or killed by his games (TNG: Encounter at Farpoint, TNG: Q Who, TNG: All Good Things… , DS9: Q-Less, VOY: Death Wish, and VOY: Q2). Q not only refers to the person (JdL) but also his species. Several people show up as other Q’s (Corbin Bernsen, Gerrit Graham, Suzie Plakson, Harve Presnell, Lorna Raver and Keegan de Lancie). Most of them are trying to rein in Q (JdL) from his games and we only see them in small parts. Keegan de Lancie is the only one we get to know as he is Q Junior. Q (JdL) is trying to teach Q Junior responsibility witth the help of Captain Janeway. Q Junior is like the Trelene character in not knowing how to restrain his powers that could harm lesser beings. Q beings for the most part are not looking to interact with humans. Q (JdL) on the other hand is bored and trying to have fun at the expense of the human race.

The next time we run into an Omnipotent Being is in TOS: Errand of Mercy (S01E27). It is not till the very end of the show that we find out that the people of Organian are actually energy beings. They stop a war between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. The Orgainians use their powers to make the weapons systems of both the Federation and the Klingons to hot to touch so that they could not use them. The Organians are very peaceful and are not a danger until we cause trouble on their planet, then they will intervene like a parent to stop the horsing around. Another Omnipotnet Being is Apollo from the episode of TOS: Who Mourns for Adonais? (S2E4). This being has been to Earth and was one of the gods of Greek Myths. He is looking to be worshipped by the Enterprise crew. The crew learn that Apollo’s power is created by advanced machinery. Once they destroy the machinery then Apollo is no longer powerful and joins the other “gods” to become one with the cosmos. Apollo was dangerous if crossed USS Hephaestus

The last group is the Prophets (wormhole aliens) from Deep Space Nine. These beings mainly only interact with the Bajoran people through orbs know as Tears of the Prophets. The Prophets seem to live outside of time. When they are first introduced, Sisko has to explain linear time to them (DS9: Emissary, E01S01). The Prophets don’t seem dangerous but help Sisko and the Bajorans several times throughout the series when they are asked by Sisko. They also fight a battle at the end with the Pah-Wraiths. The Pah-Wraiths were Prophets exiled from the wormhole to the fire caves on Bajor. We never see the Prophets’ full power as they are stopped by Sisko or Kia Winn before they can use it. The Prophets look

out for Bajor as they may be the future of Bojor when it evolves beyond linear time. Omnipotent people in Star Trek are used mostly to show what we can evolve into from our present form. The theory is we will at some time leave the physical form to become energy. Most beings that have done that are not concerned with the physical until they become bored with their reality and come to play games with the physical realm. When that happens there are only two ways to survive. One, get the omnipotent being to understand where they came from or Two, hope that one of his species shows up to stop him.

Exploring Trek At the October meeting we discussed the new series Star Trek: Discovery. This was a lively discussion with feelings on the series ranging from loving it to hating it. We discussed the characters, and the similarities and the differences to other Star Trek series. The hits and misses of the show seem to come out even. We have to see if it will stand the test of time like Star Trek: TOS The dinner for exploring was set for Thursday, November 16, 2017 at 6:30 PM. We will meet at the Arby’s in Vestavia. Next year we will start having two discussion meetings. Exploring Trek on the 4th Thursday of the month and new Beyond Sci-Fi on the 2nd Thursday of the month. If you would like to facilitate one of these meetings let me know what you would like to discuss and when would be the best time for you to do it. Looking forward to Phillip Mangina’s take on vessels of Starfleet. Start thinking about what topics you want to explore next year as well.

Reviews Television Star Trek: Discovery – Review by Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller Okay I am caught up on Star Trek Discovery. The show does have some merit and is good. It has a good sci-fi feel. The story seems to be solid. I am interested in continuing to find out what happens. Kudos to Rainn Wilson channeling Roger C. Carmel. I first heard his voice because I was working while watching ST: DIS and wondered how they got Roger since he is dead. I looked up and saw that it was Rainn Wilson. Blown away. But, there are problems. BIGGEST PROBLEM: Dialogue. There is too much mumbling by the actors. I have to have closed caption on so that I can understand what they are saying. Several of the actors need to get elocution lessons especially Captain Phillipa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). I cannot understand anything she says. Luckily, she is only in the first couple of episodes. Also, it is nice to use Klingon language but come on folks, either make the subtitles stay on long enough to read or have them speak English. The best thing would be to give us the choice of choosing if we want to hear Klingon or not. Small Problems: The drive used on the Discovery is like spice used in the Dune series by Frank Herbert. Interesting concept but couldn’t they come up with a better warp drive theory? Robots???? What is with all the robots? When did Starfleet start to use robots and then get rid of them? James Frain as Sarek needs work. He is to emotional. Time Frame – If this is before Kirk then it doesn’t work. They are doing things that were not even yet used till Kirk. (i.e. Intership transporting was first used in the TOS: Day of the Dove). I could see this as something around the time of ST: The Motion Picture or maybe 20 years before Picard but as before Kirk – not happening. The only thing that might explain some of the problems is the timeline was changed by Picard in ST: First Contact. That is the only way to make it work. Discovery works more for set up for Star Trek (2009) Cuss words – Please. That was not needed. This is the 24th century I think we would have out grown that. Rating: AAAAa

As I learn more and more what it is to be Human, I am more and more convinced that I would never make a good one. I don't have what it takes… without my powers I'm frightened of everything. I'm a coward… and I'm miserable. And I can't go on this way. – Q [talking to Picard in his ready room], TNG: Deja Q USS Hephaestus

Star Trek News & More Discovery Renewed for A Second Season CBS has announced that Star Trek: Discovery is renewed for a second season. Marc DeBevoise, President and Chief Operating Officer has said, “In just six episodes, STAR TREK: DISCOVERY has driven subscriber growth, critical acclaim and huge global fan interest for the first premium version of this great franchise. This series has a remarkable creative team and cast who have demonstrated their ability to carry on the ‘Star Trek’ legacy. We are extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished and are thrilled to be bringing fans a second season of this tremendous series.” Discovery’s first chapter will end on November 12th with the second chapter beginning in January. The second chapter will be 6 episodes compared to the 9 episodes for the first chapter. This seems uneven but if you consider the first 2 episodes at the beginning as a prologue then the first chapter would be 7 episodes long which would even things out. Nothing has been said about what the second season will entail. Hopefully CBS will be able to give the second season a better start than the delays that plagued this first season. (www.treknews.net)

Doctor Who News – By Ensign Matt Boyd Hello Whovians! Two of our favorite worlds have merged, in a way, Doctor Who and Star Trek. The script for the 2017 Doctor Who Christmas Special has been (most likely) sold at auction to raise money for William Shatner’s charity Hollywood Charity Horse Show. The Charity helps a number of different charities that help people in need. Online bidding was allowed in the silent auction, it was held on October 15th. If you are a fan of animation like me, you may like this Doctor Who story. The story Shada that was written by Douglas Adams (Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy) was going to be the seventh season finale (1980), but it would be not be so. The script was complete and ready. The producer Graham Williams was on his way out and a new producer John Nathan was on his way in and there was a strike at the BBC in 1979. Though most of the episodes were filmed not all the voice work was recorded. There was a video release in 1992 and a rerelease on DVD in 2013. Shada is getting the animation treatment. The production team of Doctor Who has taken the filmed bits and added the missing bits with animation. The new version will be available as a digital download on Friday Nov 24th and on DVD Monday Dec 4th. The story is also available in book form wherever books are sold. Here is a link to order Shada on DVD. It is Amazon UK so I am not sure it will be available in the US. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Complete-Eighth-Blu-ray/ The cast for the new season of Doctor Who has been revealed. When Jodie Whittaker gets the keys to the TARDIS she will be joined by three regulars. Pictured left to right: Mandip Gill (Yasmin), Bradley Walsh (Graham), Jodie Whitaker (The Doctor), and Tosin Cole (Ryan). Doctor Who has won the award for LGBTQ inclusiveness. Accepting the award was Pearl Mackie who played the character Bill Potts (who is a lesbian), that got the show nominated for the award. This is the second character in the LGBTQ community, the first was Captain Jack Harkness played by John Barrowmen since the return of the series in 2005. USS Hephaestus

NASA News – Cupola: The Downward Facing Shroud of Turin – By Curtis Salors (passenger) Cupola is the observatory module of the International Space Station. The name Cupola is a use of the Italian word "cupola", which means "dome". At concept and design it was generically termed "windowed workstation" and was to provide a panoramic view to astronauts aboard the ISS. In terms of design, the Cupola has seven windows and its exterior appearance is sometimes compared to the exterior of the cockpit of Star Wars' Millennium Falcon. The functionality of Cupola is many-fold. With controls that operate the space stations robotic arm, it is perhaps, most famous for its facilitation of spacewalks. It's also a place where resident astronauts find reprieve from the, largely, windowless Station. Here they can come and take in the amazing view and contemplate. In addition, Cupola is the go-to workstation for receiving and connecting space-station apparatus and supplies sent from Earth. The Module is nadir-facing according to NASA. Simplified, this basically means that the Cupola is on the Earth-facing side of the Station and is mounted underneath it. This allows astronauts a beautiful view of Earth: and, since the International Space Station is in low Earth orbit, the stunning view is a close-up of the face of Earth, or the naked eye's view of the actual geographical outlay of the blue planet. Cupola was originally a project of NASA. After several budget cuts, NASA being low on cash, decided to barter. Other organizations and governments could take over and fund the project in exchange for shuttle launch services and NASA services aboard the Station. Subsequently, the project's manufacturing was contracted out to various groups. Finally, a barter agreement landed the project with the European Space Agency under the manufacturing arm of Thales Alenia Space in Turin, Italy. The Cupola, when finished, would "allow the astronauts to see and work through seven windows" and would become paramount in space-station photography. Perhaps surprisingly, this many-windowed module is covered in a shroud of window-shutters that make it look almost tank-like. Seven separate shutters, one for each window, are to protect the windows from micrometeoroids and random space debris. These shutters can be opened individually only from the inside via high-tech knobs. It is this covering that ultimately preserves the view. Lined with hanging high tech cameras and lenses, the interior walls of the Cupola suggest that the module brings something very special into focus. Presently connected to Node 3, also called Tranquility, the Cupola was partly conceptualized by human factors specialist Frances Mount and Charles Wheelwright among others. The design requirements and the name were first written together into the Man-Systems Architectural Control Document by Gary Kitmacher. http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Human_Spaceflight/International_Space_Station/Cupola, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cupola_(ISS_module), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_Falcon, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tranquility_(ISS_module), https://web.archive.org/web/20100726075315/http://www.thalesaleniaspace-issmodules.com/cupola, http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Human_Spaceflight/International_Space_Station/Nightpod

The Orville gets a Second Season Not only has Discovery been given a second season, Fox has given a second season to Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville. Fox is very pleased with The Orville whose premiere reached 14 million viewers across various platforms. The Orville is Fox’s most watched and highest rate series launch since Empire which debuted in 2015. The Orville also in the top three dramas of the fall season. The success of The Orville may be in part to its homage to Star Trek. Fans of Star Trek can see this in the creative team that Mr. MacFarlane has put together including Brannon Braga, David A. Goodman, Jonathan Frakes, Robert Duncan McNeill and James L. Conway. Looking forward to more missions with the crew of The Orville.
