HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

Theme Article: Star Trek: The Next Generation Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered on September 26, 1987. The show ran for 7 years with a total of 178 episodes. The characters also appeared in four feature films. The show takes place 75 years after Star Trek (classic). The program first appeared in syndication because Gene Roddenberry was resentful about the interactions he had with the networks when dealing with his previous shows (i.e. Star Trek, Genesis II, The Questor Tapes). Sir Patrick Stewart thought the show wouldn’t last and refused to unpack his suitcases for 6 weeks. Also his contract was up at the end of Season 3 and if the negotiations had not gone through Captain Picard would have been killed off at the beginning of Season 4. Sir Patrick Stewart along with Jonathan Frakes (William Riker) are the only 2 characters that appear in all 178 episodes. Also Sir Patrick Stewart hated the fish in the Captain’s Ready Room. He felt it was inhuman to keep animals captive especially since they were representing a utopian society. If you want a behind the scenes look at Star Trek: The Next Generation then watch Reading Rainbow, episode, The Bionic Bunny Show. Reading Rainbow was hosted by LeVar Burton who played Geordi LaForge. The show also shows the only legal release of bloopers from TNG.{ Four of the cast members from the original series appeared in the show as their original characters: DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy in Encounter at Farpoint, Leonard Nimoy as Spock in Unification (Parts 1 & 2), James Doohan as Scotty in Relics and Majel Barrett as the ships computer (various episodes). Majel also appeared as Lwaxana Troi – Gene joked that Lwaxana was so much like Majel that she would not even have to act. Stephen Hawkins is the only person to play himself in Star Trek History. Also when Dr. Hawking visited the set he asked to be removed from his chair and placed in the Captain’s chair. This is something that he never does. Because of this he was ask to be on the show.

Lieutenant Worf: Mrs. Troi... I must protest your unauthorized presence on the bridge! Lwaxana Troi: [pointing to tactical console] What does that little one do Mr. Woof? Lieutenant Worf: Please Madame! That is a torpedo launch initiator and it's - it is Worf, madame, not Woof. — Season 4 - Half a Life
Q: If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you oughtta go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross; but it's not for the timid. — Season 2 - Q Who?
Captain Picard (quoting Judge Aaron Satie): With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably. — Season 4 - The Drumhead
Jean-Luc Picard: It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness; that is life. ********* Lt. Cmdr. Star Trek News Tom Towles (1950-2015) I am sorry to report the passing of Tom Towles. The veteran actor best know for Horror and burly bad guys passed away on April 5th. Some of you may remember Mr. Towles as the Klingon warrior Hon-Tihl in the Deep Space Nine
episode "Dramatis Personae" and as Doctor Vatm, a Nezu astrophysicist, in the Voyager episode "Rise". He also was in Firefly, and the William Shatner directed film Groom Lake. Our sympathies go to the family, friends and fans of Tom Towles. (http://www.startrek.com)
Anyone need a Genitronic Replicator? In the episode “Ethics” in The Next Generation, Worf is paralyzed when a container falls on him in the cargo bay. In the episode, Dr. Toby Russell uses a new technology call a Genitronic Replicator to replace Worf’s spine. This may not be science fiction. The University of Dresden has been able to grow an intact spinal cord for a mouse. This was done by using the mouse’s stem cells in a Petri dish. This may be just an initial step because a mouse’ spinal cords is not as complex as a human’s. It may be awhile before this is a reality but we are closer now than having to wait for the 24th century version. There will be advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of this is that by using the person’s own stem cells to create the spinal cord there might be less possibility of rejection. The disadvantage is that it takes time to grow the new spinal cord. (http://www.startrek.com)
USS Ranger headed to the Final Frontier The USS Ranger is headed to a scrap yard in Brownsville, Texas. This may see odd to have this article in Star Trek newsletter but as most fans probably know the Ranger substituted for the Enterprise in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Can you say "Nuclear wessels."? The ship was commissioned in 1957 and serve from the Vietnam War to Operation Desert Storm. It was decommission in 1993. At the beginning of March the Ranger started out its five month final voyage from Puget Sound. It is going around South America because the Ranger is too big for the Panama Canal. Thank you for your service USS Ranger. A special thank you to all the crewmen that served aboard the Ranger for our freedom. (http://www.startrek.com)
COPD: The Logical Way to Improve Lung Function and Breathe Better Julie Nimoy, daughter of Leonard Nimoy, with her fiancé David Knight are producing a new documentary about COPD. COPD is the illness that took Leonard Nimoy’s life at the end of February. This documentary will focus on the causes and the latest advances and treatments for the illness. COPD is characterized by a number of symptoms, including shortness of breath, activity limitations, respiratory infections and general fatigue. The hope is that this documentary will help with this often under diagnosed and under treated illness. (http://www.trektoday.com)

Reviews Face Off by: Captain MarkAdam Miller ScyFy Network (Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article) I normally don’t go in for reality TV shows. They all seem to me to be a little too scripted. Face Off does have some scripted parts but they are covered pretty well to make it entertaining. I have gotten into this late, as I only found it after watching Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge on Scy Fy. It came on after and sort of drew me in. I have always been interested in how they do make up on Science fiction programs so this was interesting to see the creative process. The show starts with 15 contestants competing for a makeup prize package. Each week they are given a challenge to create a character in some genre of science fiction, horror or fantasy. They are judged by Glen Hetrick, Ve Neill and Neville Page. These three judges are well known in the movie business for special effects make p. Each week the contestant whose makeup is judged the worst is dismissed. This is done till 3 contestants are left. In the Final show they then bring everybody back to help the 3 contestants with the final challenge. The best one out of this contest is declared the winner. Since I am late in coming to this program I wonder how some of the ‘masks’ are done. Some of the things they do to make them and make up application could have been covered more in the first seasons. Even though I would like to know more about this process, it is still interesting to see the contestants come up with some of their fascinating characters. The surprising thing is how much the contestants get done in the short time(less then 3days) they have to create their projects. Most of the time I and my wife agree with the judges on who has the best character. When we do disagree with the judges it normally because the judges didn’t like how the contestant did a particular effect that they felt could be done better. This show, I think, gives people who like to do this a good way to show off their talent. After the show is over a contestant would have several pieces of work to put in a portfolio and also experience in doing make up in a timecontrolled environment. The final challenge is the best because not only does the contestant need to come up with 2 or 3 characters but convey their concept to their ‘team’ (that season’s former contestants) to make sure their vision is transformed into reality. If you are into fantasy/SciFi characters then you need to check this program out. The Star Trek link to this program is the Host, McKenzie Westmore who was in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek Voyager and Star Trek: Insurrection. Her dad is Michael Westmore, also know for Special Effects makeup.
Rating: AAAAa Did I miss something? You have an interesting movie or TV show you would like to review or be reviewed? Then send me your suggestions and articles to cohephaestus@bellsouth.net.

While on an Away Mission Captain Miller was on the way to 10 forward when Q appeared in front of him drinking the last of 2 liter bottle of Grapico Soda and eating the cheese dust out of a bag of Cheetos. Q saw me and said, “I thought you would want to know, you are out of Grapico and Cheetos.” With that he disappeared. Smacking his forehead, the captain runs to 10 Forward to see what is left for the cookout. Ensign Donald Arnold is looking through the cupboards saying, “He better not have taken the Funyuns and Mountain Dew.” I see several empty bottles of Grapico and Cheetos lying around the bar and realize that Q got those items and nothing more. Ambassador Shirley Burton was sitting by the window looking out at the Stars. On the table in front of her were a big bag of Lay's Sweet Southern Heat Barbecue Potato Chips and a full liter bottle of Smart Water. I asked if she saw what happened. She said “Q came in and was hungry and started eating the Cheetos and drinking the Grapico. So I grab the Lay's Sweet Southern Heat Barbecue Potato Chips and a full liter bottle of Smart Water and I told Q, ‘You've got yours...I've got mine. We shouldn’t have a problem.’ Q said he wouldn’t be long and finished off what he was eating then disappeared.” Great now I am going to have to go back to the Starbase grocery store and get more Cheetos and Grapico. What a bad time for the replicators to go down. While on an Away Mission is a fictional account of things that the Hephaestus might run into on her Voyages. Have a suggestion of a planet to visit, a creature to encounter . . . then send me your Ideas and I will write it up. -
