Inside This Issue
HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

XO Briefing Hello crew, { This month’s The Anvil is about time travel. Here are some of my favorite time travel episodes of Star Trek. TOS: Tomorrow is Yesterday; Captain Kirk and crew gets pulled back in time by gravitational forces of a black star, the ship is over earth in the twentieth century. TAS: Yesteryear; Mister Spock and Kirk pass through the Guardian of Forever and nobody recognizes Spock but Spock passes back through Guardian of Forever and goes back in time and corrects the mistakes. TNG: Time's Arrows, parts 1 & 2; the Enterprise crew discovers a pair of aliens traveling back in time stealing souls, some of the crew go back and save some people and discover Data’s head. DS9: Trials and Tribble-ations; the Defiant's crew gets an Orb of Time and travels back in time to seek out the U.S.S Enterprise 1701 and find Barry Waddle, a man who is trying to find his younger self so he can help him kill Kirk. VOY: Futures End, parts 1 & 2; Captain Braxton attacks Voyager and the ship gets pulled back in time to the year 1996 and searches for Braxton and finds and fixes Henry Starling’s stolen technology from Braxton’s ship. ENT: Carbon Creek; T'pol explains that her ancestors have visited earth in the past when their ships breaks down on earth and they try to blend into society while they fix their ship. And lastly, the movie Star Trek: First Contact; the Enterprise follows the Borg to the past where the crew battle the Borg to prevent them from stopping first contact with the Vulcans. Lt. Ship’s Log Ships Log March 3, 2016 – Social The Social was cancelled due to illness at the Mohney house. An alternative was put in place but because of the lateness of the change only Brenda, MarkAdam and Phillip were able to show up at Pie Five in Hoover. After eating and talking for a while at Pie Five we went to 2nd and Charles, a secondhand bookstore, to browse for a while. Attendance: 3 people March 24, 2016 – Exploring Trek The Captain and the 1st Officer have started a panel discussion at a local Comic Shop (Kingdom Comics) to introduce people not only to Star Trek but Starfleet and the Hephaestus as well. We are hoping that this will get more people interested in the club. The first panel discussed the TOS episode “A Private Little War”. The discussion went very well. Attendance: 6 people April 2, 2016 A group went out to Mug Shots for dinner and then went to see Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. We had a good time and enjoyed the movie. Attendance: 3 People Personnel Updates: Lt Cmdr. Brenda Miller has completed Officer’s Command College (OCC). She passed with HONORS. Good Job and Congratulations! Starfleet Marine Corps Our Marines are headed up by Lt. General Neil Yawn. The Marines are part of Starfleet but are for those who want a more military aspect to Starfleet. There are two categories of Marines: Active which means all ranks will be Marine ranks, and Reserve which means you stay primarily Starfleet and only use Marine ranks when doing marine activities. If you are interested or have questions about the Marines, then contact Lt. Helping the Community Socks, Socks, and more Socks I have been thinking of different ways that we can do community outreach. One idea that came to mind is helping community outreach centers with clothing needs. I found that what community centers need most is socks. So I am looking to start a sock drive to help people who may need them. I am compiling a list of places that would really appreciate our help in this. Let’s see if we can make a difference. Since some of us are Harry Potter fans I was thinking of calling it the Dobby Sock Drive or Dumbledore Sock Drive since both of those characters talked about socks. I am still looking into how to connect it to Star Trek but haven’t come up with anything yet. Send me your ideas on this and other ways you think we can help the community.
Exploring Trek On March 24, 2016 we kicked off the first Exploring Trek { discussion group at Kingdom Comics. The discussion group looked at the episode A Private Little War. We talked about the different characters, plot points and ramification that the show had to offer. One of the things that came out of it was the parallel between topics discussed in the episode and the discussions in the 1960’s about the Vietnam war. The following are the question we handed out for the participants to think about on their own: 1. Compare and Contrast TOS episode A Private Little War with the TOS episode Friday’s Child. A. How was the interaction with the Klingons handled? B. Was the interaction with the cultures different? 2. Compare and Contrast TOS A Private Little War with TNG episode Too Short a Season. A. Did Mark Jameson come to the same conclusion as Captain Kirk? B. Does Too Short a Season give the outcome that Kirk or McCoy were debating in A Private Little War? You can email me your thoughts on these questions at cohephaestus@bellsouth.net The next meeting is April 28, 2016, 7PM at Kingdom Comics. The discussion will center around Time Travel. Challenge Contest I did not receive any submissions to the challenges that are in the Anvil. Were they too tough or did you not have time to look? Here are the three Challenges again: { 1. Name The Episode: This is a picture trivia challenge. Typically, it is to name the episode the picture is from, but, sometimes you may need to name the character. Like this month it is name the 1st Officer and the ship he is on and the episode he is from. 2. Do you know this Alien?: Randomly placed throughout the newsletter. This one can be tough because you need to give the Alien’s given name, his species and what episode he was in? 3. Hunt for the Icon: This challenge is to find the hidden Icon in five different places in the newsletter. I will announce each winner in the next month’s issue. I will also keep a running tally of who is getting the most right. Then at November’s Fall Feast I will present certificates for each of the challenges; 1. Theme Article: Time Travel By Captain MarkAdam Miller Time Travel is my second favorite topic in Science Fiction. Robots is my first, but Star Trek offers a lot more in the way of time travel than it does about robots. In the 726 episodes of television Star Trek, 51 of them have some element of time travel. Even 4 of the 12 movies have a time travel theme. Time Travel is older than written literature. Most of the first time travel stories are base off of the oral myths and legends of the time. In these, the traveler is either in a dream like sleep or is taken by some God-like power. The first controlled time travel story is written by H.G. Wells in The Time Machine. This is most likely the first science fiction time travel since the traveler is in control where in other literature it is more fantasy than science fiction because the central character is controlled by a dream or God-like source. Star Trek uses both of these to do time travel. The original series used laws of physics in the episodes The Naked Time, Tomorrow is Yesterday, and Assignment: Earth. Physical laws could be said to be used in The City on the Edge of Forever and All Our Yesterdays but how these devices work is beyond the science of the Federation at the time. Because of this one could say that a God-like power was used in these stories. The common theme through these is how not to change the future while you are in the past. This is normally the problem with Science Fiction time travel. Something has changed in the past that affects the future and the traveler has to go back and fix the problem. When we get to The Next Generation, we have stories that use the past as a way to understand the future. In the episode Tapestry, the God-like Q takes Picard to his past to show him how his choices made him a captain. Even though it is never explained if Picard’s experience was a dream or the afterlife, travel to the past is used. The final episode All Good Things… also has a dream like quality to it. This time the Captain not only goes to the past but also the future. Again we are left to wonder was it all a dream or did what happened really happen. In Deep Space Nine: Visionary, Chief O’Brian goes in to the future several times for a few minutes but the time jumps are not more than an hour ahead. This theme of going into the future is explored more often in the Voyager and Enterprise series. In Voyager and Enterprise, the people in the future are actually manipulating those in the past. Some of it is for good and some of it for nefarious purposes. This still is the plot of something happening in the past that changes the future. The only difference is that the past is the present time and the future is the one that is in control. Janeway and Archer do make the future understand that they can’t mess with them. In all the time travel episodes I always find it interesting what can become the pivotal point that makes or breaks the future. In The City On the Edge of Forever the death of Edith Keeler (Joan Collins) is the pivotal point that makes it so the future has a Federation but in the Animated series “Yesteryear” the death of a beloved pet Sehlat, I-Chaya, does not cause any effect on the time line. Is this because the pet doesn’t contribute anything even if it lived or that Spock, the pet’s owner, not remember when his beloved pet died. So if we do travel through time how much would we have to know to make sure that we don’t cause a problem with our present. Knowing my luck, I would travel back to Shakespearian England and end up killing the Great, Great, Grandfather of Abe Lincoln making the civil war worse. Race to Kentucky for IC 2016 By Vice Admiral Lucy Ferron Franck Fun fact: 95% of the world’s bourbon supply comes from Kentucky! The IC 2016 Committee invites everyone to attend International Conference in Louisville, KY, on August 12-14. There will be plenty of fun, festivities, and informational panels for first-timers and veteran attendees alike. In the Bluegrass State of Kentucky, Louisville is home to the famous Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, Kentucky bourbon producers, Louisville Sluggers production (which has a museum), and the Muhammad Ali Museum to name a few of the sites. It is also the home of the Hot Brown Sandwich. I can’t wait to try a Hot Brown after reading the description: an open-faced turkey, cheese and bacon sandwich with Mornay sauce. The theme for IC 2016 is “Trekkin’ II: Horsing around on the Ohio!” We’ll be racing to the future as we take you out to the holodeck and explore NASA and celebrate Star Trek’s 50th Anniversary. The conference hotel is the Crowne Plaza Airport Louisville. The hotel has plenty of roomy rooms to host all meetings, panels, merchandise dealers, and fun times. We will be having all the traditional activities such as Opening Ceremonies and Awards, General Session, Ask the Brass, Charity Auction, Music and Dance, Marine Mess and Saturday night banquet. Some unique concurrent sessions/panels are being planned, such as The Star Trek Barkeep, Propmaking 101, Star Trek Celebrations, Sports around the Federation, Star Trek and Religion, Making Prostheses, STARFLEET Special Ops, the National Space Society and more. Start making your plans now to join us! Rooms at the Crowne Plaza Airport Louisville are $102.00 per night plus state and local tax. Star Trek News & More Looking to get a Tribble For the 50th Anniversary celebration, on April 1st, the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum began an experiment to breed tribbles. They used five original specimens of the species Polygeminus Grex that were obtained from the original Star Trek Series in 1973. Dr. Margaret Weitekamp, curator of the Museum’s Social and Cultural Dimensions of Spaceflight collection is quoted, “After 50 years, we decided it was time to bring the tribble back! So, we worked with several specialized veterinary schools and zoos in order to create a special diet and then it was easy—we just fed them and let nature take its course.” At last report the Smithsonian is looking at contingency plans because the number of tribbles has exceeded museums expectation. They are working with contractor Cyrano Jones to get a supply of glommers, creatures specially designed to devour surplus tribbles. Also they contacted Smithsonian’s National Zoological Park to see if they can help. A zoo spokesperson said that it would be “no tribble at all. Leonard Nimoy’s Final work of Art As part of the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, a traveling art exhibit will feature that last work of art by Leonard Nimoy. The art show, “Star Trek: 50 Artists. 50 Years” will feature Trekthemed art pieces by 50 artists from 10 countries around the world. It will start this summer at the San Diego Comic Con and run till August 2017. Mr. Nimoy’s contribution is a photographic work featuring a colored image of Nimoy’s own hand poised in a Vulcan salute. Other works include posters, sculptures, digital paintings and more. The US Postal Service will be showing its 50th anniversary Star Trek Stamps that were designed by Heads of State. Axanar Lawsuit The lawsuit against Axanar Productions by Paramount Pictures Corp. and CBS Studios, Inc. is still going strong. After Axanar questioned what copyrights they had infringed upon, Paramount Pictures Corp and CBS Studios, Inc. came back with a 48 page amended complaint. That 48 pages included 28 pages that where details of what copyrights had been infringed upon. Some of the copyrighted material includes species (Klingons, Vulcans, Romulans, Andorians, Tellarites), Characters (Garth of Izar, Soval, Robau, John Gill, Sarek, Captain Robert April, Chang) and Star Trek terms (beaming up, The Federation, Enterprise, dilithium crystals). This is a hot button issue because how this lawsuit is settled may affect how Star Trek is portrayed going forward. It also may affect fan films and cosplayers in what they can and cannot do. When Gene Roddenberry was trying to sell Star Trek to the TV Studios, he compared it to Wagon Train. Sylvia Anderson – March 15, 2016, age 88 Best known as the voice of Lady Penelope in Thunderbirds. She partnered with her former husband, Gerry Anderson, producing and writing many projects which included Space: 1999 and UFO. Larry Drake – March 17, 2016, age 66 The actor who played Administrator Chellick in the Star Trek: Voyager seventh season episode Critical Care. He is better known as Benny Stulwicz on the drama series L.A. Law. In this series he played alongside Star Trek alumni Corbin Bernsen and Diana Muldaur. Reviews Movies Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice

Warner Brothers wants a piece of the Superhero pie of which Marvel has been taking the most of with their Avenger, Ironman, Captain America, Etc. movies. And Marvel doesn’t look like they are going to stop anytime soon. So what does Warner Brothers want to do. They do have the Justice League that has as many different superheroes as the Avengers so they should be able to do that. Instead of doing as Marvel did and trot out a good story using a second tier superhero like Cyborg, Flash or even Aquaman they go with top tier, Batman and Superman. I can understand that since Batman and Superman have served them well most of the time. The problem is we have seen enough of Batman and Superman. Give us something new. There is a nice story in the film about how we need to look at the world. This comes out in the struggle between Batman and Superman on how they look at the world. Superman has this optimistic view that there is good in all people which was taught to him by the Kent’s of Smallville. Batman’s view is that the world is evil and you need to do everything in your power to crush it. His view maybe a result of him losing his parents at a young age due to violence. This is the first point that brought the movie down for me. They rehash Thomas and Martha Wayne’s death. We already saw it in Batman (1989) and Batman Begins (2005). We don’t need to see it again and it slows this movie down. I am glad they didn’t also bring Superman from Krypton but that already was shown in Man of Steel (2013) which this movie is sort of a sequel to. { This movie does use the destruction of Metropolis from Man of Steel as the reason that Batman and Superman are challenging each other’s world view. The whole film’s theme is: Can Superman be trusted since he has God-like powers? Then add into the mix Lex Luthor Jr. This is not the Lex Luthor we know from the comic book. This is his son who has taken Lex Corp out of the Oil and Real Estate businesses that his father built and turned it into the 2nd largest tech company in the world, just behind Wayne Industries. They don’t tell us what happen to Lex Sr. but now Lex Jr. is in charge. It is not an all-business Lex but a deranged Lex. (Spoiler) This Lex is more of The Joker than Lex. This spoiled the character of Lex in this movie because he didn’t seem like he could run a multibillion dollar enterprise like Lex Corp but more like running the company into the ground. Wonder Woman shows up and has some good cameos not only as Wonder Women but as Diana Prince as well. We also see cameos of Justice League Members Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg. The movie is slow going in the beginning, jumping around not only between Metropolis and Gotham but also jumping around the time line as well. When we get to the main action, then the movie gets going and is enjoyable. Ben Affleck does a good job but I think it is because he is shown more as Bruce Wayne than as Batman. Henry Cavill brought more to the part of Superman than Brandon Routh who portrayal was an homage to Christopher Reeves when he played Superman in Superman Returns (2006). Jeremy Irons also did a good job as Alfred, Bruce Wayne’s faithful butler. Amy Adams needed something as intrepid Reporter Lois Lane but this may have been more on the writing side than Ms. Adams’ acting ability. In my opinion, this movie is not worth the price they ask at the box office. Save your money and wait to watch it when it comes out on DVD (or Netflex). Rate: AAaaa Did I miss something?
