HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

From the Ready Room Greetings from your Captain, Remember that the August social is a week later because of STARFLEET 2016 IC. Brenda and I will be attending for our first time to meet those from other regions. Keep an eye on the Activity Schedule (pg. 21) for schedule changes. I am asking everyone to please contribute 1 or 2 lines of what Star Trek means to you for the September 50th Anniversary Star Trek issue of The Anvil. Also send pictures of yourselves in Star Trek uniforms or with your Star Trek collections or meeting some of the Stars. I really would like this to be like a family album newsletter of what Star Trek means to the Hephaestus. If you need help drop me an email and I will help you put something together. Let’s make this a 50th Anniversary salute unlike any other. Articles, fiction and reviews are also welcomed. XO Briefing Hello crew, This time I was on support help at Target in Tuscaloosa for its Back to College sale. They were #1 in the company for sales. Many of the crew saw Star Trek Beyond. as a group on Sat Jul 23rd. I got to see it with my father later, it was really good. The Captain and I saw Suicide Squad, there was some really good dialogue and scenes. If you need me, I’ll be with Section 31, Lt. Phillip Mangina, phillip3056@charter.net

Prime Directive: A Good Idea or Just a Plot Device By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller The Prime Directive was used in sixty-six episodes and 3 of the movies as part of the storyline. The directive is best given as follows:

Naomi Wildman reveals that there are 47 sub-orders that pertain to the Prime Directive. The discussion of the Prime Directive comes up in the Star Trek fan base because it seems that this directive is broken more than it is followed. If it is broken so many times, then why have it as a directive or is it just a plot device the writers used to move the story along? }

As the right of each sentient species to live in accordance with its normal cultural evolution is considered sacred, no Starfleet personnel may interfere with the normal and healthy development of alien life and culture. Such interference includes introducing superior knowledge, strength, or technology to a world whose society is incapable of handling such advantages wisely. Starfleet personnel may not violate this Prime Directive, even to save their lives and/or their ship, unless they are acting to right an earlier violation or an accidental contamination of said culture. This directive takes precedence over any and all other considerations, and carries with it the highest moral obligation.1

It does do well as a plot device. The best example is TNG: Symbiosis. In this episode Picard has to see how best to help a planet that is hooked on a drug from another planet. Picard sees that any help that the Enterprise might offer will lead to a breakdown of the peace the two sides have with each other. The best solution is to let what is happening take its course and a new better relationship could emerge. Any help the Enterprise would give would bring along a need to force a new way of life that one of the planets would not care for and would rebel causing other problems.

The Prime Directive is credited to Gene L. Coon and was a reaction to the United States Foreign Policy during the Vietnam War. Some believed that United States was interfering in natural development of the Vietnam society. The need of the Prime Directive seems best summed up by Captain Picard in TNG: Symbiosis:

This does bring up the point that if we want the Prime Directive to work we need to leave all planets alone and not explore past our own back yard. This would stop the main reason of Starfleet which is to explore. The problem is we need not be so heavy handed with the Prime Directive. When we explore we must be careful not to cause problems. If we do cause a problem, fix it. The best example of this is TNG: Who Watches the Watchers. This episode has a group of anthropologists watching a Vulcan like race as they advance out of their primitive society. A technical glitch causes an anthropologist to be seen and the culture of the planet to be changed. The damage was done but Enterprise and the Anthropology team do make it so that the damage is not a critical problem to the culture.

"The Prime Directive is not just a set of rules; it is a philosophy... and a very correct one. History has proven again and again that whenever mankind interferes with a less developed civilization, no matter how well intentioned that interference may be, the results are invariably disastrous." This does seem like a good idea. The problem is that it is easier said than done. The Star Trek writers themselves admit this when in VOY: Infinite Regress, USS Hephaestus

The one thing in which the writers use the Prime Directive, which I disagree with, is in the case of natural disasters. The writers say the Prime Directive states to let nature take its course. This was shown in TNG: Pen Pals and TNG: Homeward. In Pen Pals, the crew discusses if they should interfere if a people or culture is going to be destroyed in a natural disaster. One point is that they shouldn’t because nature (God) may be trying to get rid of the people. Some counter this point with: if you believe nature (God) is in control of the situation then could not this same nature (God) have had you there to save the people. I agree with this counter point. Picard brings up the point of man-made problems, wars and dictatorships. The crew becomes uneasy in how they want to help in those situations. I disagree that the two are equal. Natural disasters while they could be man-made can normally be taken care of without interfering in the culture. This was done in both cases of Pen Pals and Homeward.

2. They will ignore the change completely. (Example: extinction of certain animals) 3. Change will take time. (Example: Slavery existed for 245 years in North America) These three consequences each have a cost you have to figure in when you are going to try to stop something. From this I conclude that the point of the Prime Directive is for story plot but I believe we can take something from it. When we deal with other people, cultures and societies we need to be mindful that they may have different ways of looking at things. Our first objective when dealing with people, culture and society should be try and do no harm. If we make a mistake and cause harm, then help to make it right with who or what we harmed. 1

Genta, Giancarlo. Lonely Minds in the Universe: The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. New York: Springer, 2007, p. 208. http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Prime_Directive

The man-made problem side of not interfering is best demonstrated in the VOY: Time and Again. A culture is destroyed by the power source (Polaric ions) they use. Janeway and Paris get trapped in the past because of a time disruption that the Polaric ions caused. Paris wants to warn the people of the problem but Janeway says the Prime Directive won’t allow them. A few of the people in the society believe that Polaric Power will cause problems but the majority do not. This is a situation where it would not help to tell the people the problem they face. They do not believe the protestors so why would they believe Paris and Janeway anyway. Also it is Voyager’s trying to rescue Paris and Janeway that caused the explosion in the first place not the society having the Polaric power source. When helping a culture from manmade problems there are three consequences that can happen:

Others Thoughts: Observe, do not interfere with Alien conflict. I, at this time, do agree with the Prime Directive. One does not know the reason for the conflict especially if the crew has only been observing the conflict for a short period of time. Interfering could cause many negative side effects. The possibility of a positive outcome is unlikely, but still possible. The end result of interfering could make the conflict worse or cause the maleficent one to win the conflict. Then the end result of that could be an enemy in the future. – Matt Boyd The Prime Directive, also known as Starfleet General Order 1 or the Non-Interference Directive, was the embodiment of one of Starfleet's most important ethical principles: noninterference with other cultures and civilizations. At its core was the

philosophical concept that covered personnel should refrain from interfering in the natural, unassisted, development of societies, even if such interference was well-intentioned. The Prime Directive was viewed as so fundamental to Starfleet that officers swore to uphold the Prime Directive, even at the cost of their own life or the lives of their crew. (TOS: Bread and Circuses, A Piece of the Action; TAS: Bem; TNG: Justice, Symbiosis, Who Watches the Watchers, Homeward; VOY: Course:Oblivion; Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)) The "precursor" to the Prime Directive, though somewhat undefined, could be traced back to Captain Jonathan Archer's and Phlox's ethical dilemma they faced when encountering two species, one with a terminal genetic illness and the other without. Archer commented that eventually, Starfleet would have to "come up with some sort of a doctrine" establishing what Humans should and should not do while

exploring space and interacting with other lifeforms. They decided that interfering with the natural evolutionary course of these two species would go against the "directive" upon which they based their entire mission: to meet new species and attempt peaceful communications, not to ‘play God’. (ENT: Dear Doctor) The fundamental principles were an important part of Earth Starfleet procedures as early as 2152, but it did not go into effect as a General Order until sometime after 2168. (ENT: The Communicator; TOS: A Piece of the Action) The directive remained in effect well into the 24th century and applied to at least Starfleet and Merchant Marine personnel, but specifically did not apply to ordinary Federation citizens. (TOS: Bread and Circuses; TNG: Angel One) – Phillip } Mangina

While on an Away Mission By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller RECAP: Trying to clear up a dispute between the Romulans and the Klingons based on lies from the Jem’Hadar and a Vorta, Phillip gives us a Romulan Data recorder which we think will help us prove that the Jem’Hadar and the Vorta are taking orders from an undercover Founder based on Romulus.

Romulan senate for treason. Telok then told the story that the Klingons were trying to destroy the Sun and if that did not work then they would destroy Remus. This brings us to where the Federation comes in. We looked over the reports made to the Romulan Senate and find that the data doesn’t correlate with all the readings. Taking all the readings in to account it shows that the Romulan Sun is breaking down and will possibly go super Nova in 50 to 100 years. More study is needed to be sure of what has to be done so this doesn’t happen.”

**** We set up the meeting on the Hephaestus so that it takes place on neutral ground. The meeting is attended by Vobok (Commander of the Romulan ship), Teshek (Chief Science Officer of the Romulan ship), the Vorta with a Jem’Hadar guard, Martok (Chancellor of the Klingon Empire) and Worf (Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire), also Ambassador Mike Burtyk and myself. I and Martok object to the Jem’Hadar being here. Vobok agrees overruling the objections that spew from the Vorta. The Jem’Hadar is sent back to his ship.

Teshek jumps up, “This is a Federation lie. You …” Mike pulls a Mek’leth out shouting, “You will shut up , sit down and let me finish.” Teshek reaches for his weapon but Vobok pulls him back down in his seat. Mike continues, “The reason that we don’t believe he is Telok is that the real Telok has been dead since before the Dominion war and we have the ship data recorder to prove it.” As he says this, Phillip brings in the data recorder.

We settle in a mess hall since it has more room than our briefing room. I have the security guards Lt JG Sandra Holsey and Lt JG James Davis wait outside in case we need something. Mike then starts the presentation of what we learned.

I look up and notice the Vorta starting to get up and head for the door. I pull my own Mek’Leth pointing at the Vorta, “Where do you think your going?” The Vorta suddenly turns into a gold fluid and rises to the celling. Phillip pulls his phaser out and shoots the form that then falls to the ground. Sondra and James race in with phaser drawn. Vobok hits his communicator and yells something in Romulan. As soon as he is finished yelling, the ship shakes and the red alert klaxon goes off. I think to myself, “What in Great Granny’s corset is going on now…”

“The Klingons were asked by a group of Romulans scientists, headed by Telok, to help with readings that were similar to readings the Klingons had when Praxis exploded. After studying the Romulan data, the Klingons helped show that the readings were not coming from the planets but were coming from the Romulan sun. After the Klingons headed home, the Jem’Hadar then captured the Romulan scientists and took them in front of the

Star Trek Fiction Star Trek: The New Adventures – The Coming War By Ensign 1st Class Donald Arnold

Back in the 25th Century, Vision called Stephanie back to his office after about a week. “Welcome, Mrs. Kirk. I would like to present you with a list of those who wish to join us. It lists the status of the original Avengers as well.” He handed Stephanie a PADD bearing the following:

RECAP: When last we heard from the Enterprise J crew, Bill was being pulled aimlessly through time and space while his wife Stephanie looked into the cause of his disappearance. With Thanos in route, Vision and the Avengers could be her only hope to get Bill back. **** Bill landed in what looked like a laboratory. He willed himself into clothing of the period. Apparently the gems knew the date. He was dressed for life in 21st Century. Suddenly a voice accosted him, saying, “Dude! Who are you and what are you doing in my lab?” Bill turned to see a man with a glowing object in his chest, wielding a metal hand with a similar device embedded in the palm. Bill thought quickly and answered, “I’m an investigator. I was sent by your friend.” The man seemed so familiar though Bill had never met him. Looking around carefully, Bill noticed the name Stark on nearly everything. This person, Bill guessed to be Mr. Stark. Mr. Stark then questioned, “Which friend?” Bill, thinking quickly, answered, “Steve did, Mr. Stark.” Suddenly, a look of shock and surprise fell over the man’s face and he lowered the glove, muttering, “It’s Tony. And what did he send you for?” Bill relaxed slightly and responded, “I’m Bill, and Steve wanted to see how you were doing.” Suddenly, Tony, in an explosion of anger, threw a shot glass across the room, nearly missing Bill’s head before declaring, “You tell Steve Rogers I said that if he wants to see how I’m doing, he can come face me himself. And another thing, I’d advise you to stay away from him, man. He’s dangerous and will get you killed. Trust me. I know.” Bill nodded went to exit, passing a metal shield mounted to the wall.

TONY STARK – MIA STEVE ROGERS – DECEASED BRUCE BANNER – LIVING NATASHA ROMANOFF – DECEASED BUCKY BARNES – LIVING CLINT BARTON – DECEASED (Descendant Available) SAM WILSON – DECEASED SCOTT LANG – DECEASED THOR – LIVING JAMES RHODES – DECEASED JOHNNY BLAZE – LIVING CABLE – LIVING WOLVERINE – LIVING VISION – LIVING CHARLES X – LIVING

The list went on. Names like, “Deadpool,” “IceMan,” “Spider-Man,” and many others popped up rather than real names because the mantle passed on. Stephanie smiled for the first time in quite a while and said, “Let’s go to war.” Thanos sat on his throne, a true Rogues gallery standing before him. He cleared his throat and, in his feared and commanding voice said, “You are the pawns I have chosen. Retrieve the stones and bring the human to me. I want the honor of killing him. Understood?” One by one, Loki, Red Skull, Doctor Doom, and Ultron in his new form, agreed. The war was about to begin. (To Be Continued)

Reviews Movies Star Trek Beyond Reviewed by Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller Star Trek is back. After two movies that were directed by J.J. Abrams who admits he is a Star Wars fan and not a Star Trek fan we get a movie that had a fan as one of its writers. Simon Pegg, a favorite among nerds for Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, helped bring a Star Trek movie that would please the fans and pays homage to this year’s 50th Anniversary of Star Trek. Star Trek Beyond is set in the Kelvin Universe (the Starship destroyed in the first film creating this universe formally called the Abrams Universe). It takes place almost 3 years after the events in Star Trek into Darkness. (A reference of 966 days of the five-year mission is given which is an homage to the original air date of Star Trek.) The story line is a good action piece that moves along straight from the beginning. The actors are still doing a good job showcasing the characters we know and adding more dimensions to those characters. Chris Pine, especially, has grown in to the shoes of Captain Kirk that were created by William Shatner. In the previous movies (Star Trek, 2009 and Star Trek into Darkness, 2013) the Kirk character was made a little different because he grew up without the father figure the Shatner’s Kirk had. In the first two films Pine’s Kirk was trying to live up to a father he never knew but in this movie Pine’s Kirk has realized he needs to be himself and not his father. Idris Elba, who plays the antagonist Krall, portrays a Being with a grudge against the Federation. Most aliens (Klingons and Romulans) want to conquer the } Federation because of a difference in ideology but Krall wants to destroy the Federation just because of the Federation’s ideology. Jaylah, who is played by Sofia Boutella, lends support to the crew even though she sees that their effort will not work against the powerful Krall. This support by Jaylah helps drive the main characters to show what they really have to make things work. Also Sofia Boutella’s performance helps add to the original characters and makes them more than what we know of them from the original series. This movie, I feel, is on the same standing as Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country. If Paramount and CBS can continue to bring us stories like this then Star Trek will have a bright future. As for Star Trek fans, they are waiting for this to come out on Blu-Ray so they can get an official count of all the Easter Eggs that are in this film. I still think I missed several. Suicide Squad Review by: Ensign 1st Class Donald Arnold All in all, without spoilers, I am impressed. I will begin by saying if you were on the fence because of Batman vs Superman, don’t be. This film is a real saving grace to the DCEU (DC Extended Universe). Let’s start with the characters. Save for an exception of two, the film explained its characters very well. Jared Leto was a great Joker. If you enjoy Mark Hamill as the Joker, I think you’ll love Leto. Next up, we have Margot Robbie and Will Smith as Harley Quinn and Deadshot. Both were very well done. The antagonist was a little rocky, but I feel like the character development for the members of Task Force X made up for that. Any and all cameos were enjoyed and well explained. The only other thing I think I can say without too many spoilers is: STAY FOR THE POST CREDIT SCENE. That is all. Rate: AAAAA

With amazing music, mind-blowing special effects, and an extremely talented company, I can say without a doubt that the touring company of Wicked is surely a popular group! Books No Escape – Book One in the Mark IV Anna Series by Danny B. McGuire, Self-Published Review by Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller Danny B. McGuire does it again. This is the second book in his Mark IV Anna Series and it is as good as the first. (The first book is Book Zero because Mr. McGuire uses computer nomenclature to number the books because Anna is an Android.) I thought something was wrong until I realized that Anne doesn’t have the team she had with her in the first book. She is alone and no one knows she is an android trying to USS Hephaestus

figure out how to blend in with human society. Mr. McGuire uses a change in writing tone to allow us to see how Anna is reacting to the world she is living in. She is distant and analytical of all the things around her. We are not getting the interpretations of those feelings that we received from the team in the first book. The book is picking up six months after the first book. Anna is living in Birmingham, AL, as a programmer in a start-up computer company. Because Stephan Entsky wants her to do what he created her for, he has sent her sister, Mark III Eliza, after her. Mr. McGuire also fills us in more on how Anna connects with other computer systems which gives interesting and sometimes comical situations. An example: Cars have computer chips that mechanics can plug into to get a read out of what is wrong with it. When Anna plugs in to the chip she sees in her mind an actual mechanic that tells her what the readouts say. This way of writing lets us see not only the real world but also the cyber world in which computers exist. The humor and personal interaction of the first book are still here but the added edge of Anna’s isolation from her former team adds a depth that takes a little getting used to, but still makes you want to keep turning the page. Like the first book, this book has science fiction and pop culture references. The book also has a reality to it since it references many familiar places around Birmingham, AL. If you like Android/ Robot or Mystery stories then you will like this book. Mr. McGuire adds enough twists to keep you wondering where the story is going but not enough to lose you along the way. (PS: The language is not as salty as the first book.) Rate: AAAAA Review of Beta Test – Book Zero in the Mark IV Anna series can be found in the July Anvil. Star Trek News & More Star Trek: Discovery The latest on the new CBS Star Trek Series is that it will be called Star Trek: Discovery. The abbreviation for the new show will be ST: DSC because STD is not going to work. David Semel, director of episodes Buffy, The Vampire Slayer and Angel, has been confirmed to direct the first episode of the new series. Mr. Semel has many pilot episodes to his credit including Madam Secretary, Code Black, Person of Interest, Legends, Heroes, and No Ordinary Family. San Diego Comic Con was the first to see a video of the test flight of the U.S.S. Discovery (NCC - 1031) presented by Executive Producer Bryan Fuller. When asked why the name Discovery was chosen Mr. Fuller Explained, "There are so many reasons why we settled on Discovery, but the chief one amongst them was that I couldn't think of a more Star Trek-themed name for a ship than Discovery." Later interviews with Mr. Fuller indicate that the series is set in the prime universe and not the Kelvin. Also that the number of the ship should give us an idea of when in the prime universe it is set which would seem before the launch of the Enterprise. I like the name since it is one of the names of the original NASA shuttles. As for what to expect I am still not sure if we can take another series that is set before the original series.

(www.startreknews.com, www.trektoday.com) Where is Carol Marcus Many people were wondering where Carol Marcus from Star Trek into Darkness was during Star Trek Beyond. Simon Pegg, one of the writers, gave the following answer: “With this it felt like we would under-serve her if we included her,” he said. “She might end up feeling like she hadn’t been given the amount of screen-time she deserves, so rather than bring her in and just have her be a supporting role, like, have her not be in this one, and when the time comes [bring her back]. “The worst thing to do would be to have her in the film and have that character be killed, and that felt like a cynical thing to do. We thought rather than have Carol Marcus not be used to a reasonable capacity, let’s just not include her, have her be alive, in canon, and ready to come back at any time.” Mr. Pegg also explained that in a previous draft Dr. Marcus was off starting work on the Genesis Device.

(www.trektoday.com) Deleted Scene Fans If you are fan of deleted scenes, then the Star Trek Beyond, Blu-Ray may not be for you. Justine Lin said there were only a couple scenes that didn’t make it into the movie. The problem is that since they didn’t make it in the movie then the scenes are not done. They would have to put money in them to edit out the green screen and edit in the CGI material. Most production companies are not going to spend the money to have that done. Are we missing anything. Maybe, as Lin explained an extended scene of Scotty getting in the photon torpedo was cut for timing reasons. Lin said, “Simon did such a great job and I didn’t want to cut… and that was one of the last shots I ended up removing because it was not helping the overall, even though I loved the performance; I loved that moment.” We will see what happens when Star Trek Beyond comes to Blu-Ray. One way is for you to watch a short video of the two-year restoration process. Bill George documented the restoration project that was done at Smithsonian’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy facility. Using that material, he created a six-minute video called Spacedock (https://vimeo.com/176999007). The Enterprise is back at the Smithsonian Air and Space museum in the Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall in Washington D.C. (www.treknews.net)

Never Forget… Seamon Glass – 12 July, 2016 – age 90 Mr. Glass played Benton, one of the Miners, in “Mudd’s Woman.” Jerry Doyle – July 27, 2016 – age 60 Mr. Doyle is known as security chief Michael Garibaldi on the TV series Babylon Five. Babylon Five was a rival of the Star Trek Series Deep Space Nine. I met him at a convention in Indiana and found him very funny. David Huddleston – August 2, 2016 – age 85 Mr. Huddleston is best known for the part he played in “The Big Lebowski” (1998). To Star Trek fans he is known as the conductor in the TNG: Emergence (1994).

Recommendations By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller Things I have seen that are beautiful works of art but have an engineering aspect to them as well.

Ship’s Log July 9, 2016 – Captain’s Cookout

Captain’s Personal Log

If you were not at the Captain's Cookout, then you missed a good time. We played Dalmuti (MarkAdam Miller won), Munchkin that was hard fought with Brenda A. Miller winning and Texas Hold'em with Michael Burtyk winning that game. We had plenty of food with several people bringing things to eat. Others watched several movies on the Big screen TV.

July 10-12, 2016 – Section 31 I and the 1st Officer Phillip Mangina took the 1st Officer’s shuttle to Gulfport, MS. We were on assignment for Section 31. The assignment included looking over an old earth sea vessel, called a battleship, named U.S.S. Alabama. Ensign 1st Class Donald Arnold’s Personal Log

July 23, 2016 – Star Trek Beyond Premier

This evening I joined my fellow crewmen on an outing to Star Trek Beyond. Now, I enjoyed the last two films (directed by J.J. Abrams simply so he could get access to Star Wars) but not as much as I enjoyed Beyond. Personally, I consider it the best of the three newest films and I believe it has, perhaps, earned its way into my top five favorite Star Trek movies list. Idris Elba thoroughly impressed me in his role as the film’s antagonist. As usual, the trio of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy have a chemistry that is undeniable. I also have to say that I applaud Justin Lin for making Sulu openly homosexual. I feel like, especially in current times, we need to be reminded of Gene’s vision: tolerance and equality. This film had many a message and I believe Gene (and Leonard who was so philosophical himself) would be proud. If you haven’t yet, go see it. Also, a message to my fellow communications officers: Don’t break my music!

The Summit Carmike Cinema asked us to greet the evening crowd for the Saturday showings of Star Trek Beyond. We met at the Dairy Queen behind the Summit to plan out how we were going to greet people. We had a number of fliers and several different issues of The Anvil newsletters available for the guests. Members of the ship greeted and talked to a lot of movie-goers, not only for Star Trek Beyond but also for other movies. The Summit was very appreciative of us coming. As Captain, I wish to thank all of you who showed up to help. Best cosplay uniform goes to Lt JG Sandra Hosley. (picture in Crew Happenings, pg. 15) Attendance: 11 people July 28, 2016 – Exploring Trek Our monthly community panel, Exploring Trek, at Kingdom Comics talked about TNG: A Measure of a Man. The talk went very well. A special thanks to passenger Carly Strickland for her research into the definition of being sentient. Snacks included Moon Pies and Key Lime Oreos. Next month we will be discussing the new movie Star Trek Beyond.

(If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: cohephaestus@bellsouth.net. Also your personal updates can give your Captain added info to help get you recognition and awards at Summit for your accomplishments).

Exploring Trek The July Exploring Trek discussed TNG: The Measure of a Man. The discussion was opened with the attendees telling what episode they would recommend to someone who hadn’t seen Star Trek. Similar questions have been done in previous meetings to sort of break the ice to get everyone contributing to the discussion. This one was interesting because the attendees gave two different episodes, One serious and the other comedy. The typical was TNG: The Measure of a Man (serious) and TOS: The Trouble with Tribbles (Comedy). Once we started discussing the episode we delved in to the characters and different aspects that were brought out in the episode. Some of the topics were:} 1. Were Captain Picard and Captain Louvois just old adversaries or had they been lovers? 2. How had this issue not been resolved before this since Data had obtained the rank of Lt. Commander and received several medals for his work? 3. Is Data Sentient? I would like to thank Carly Strickland for her research into what it means to be sentient. Her handout was very helpful when came to discussing this last question. Follow up questions to work on your own were: 1. Discuss the differences of court room trope between TOS: Court Martial and TNG: The Measure of a Man. 2. Discuss the differences of court room trope between VOY: Author, Author and TNG: The Measure of a Man. The next Exploring Trek is August 25 at Kingdom Comics. The Topic will be the new movie Star Trek Beyond. Popcorn and Twizzlers will be provided. If there is an episode or topic you would like to explore please email me with your suggestions. You can email me your thoughts on these questions at cohephaestus@bellsouth.net.

It's the first time we've been on the other side of the fence. How many times have we been in the position of refusing to interfere when some kind of disaster threatened an alien culture? It's all very well to say we do it on the basis of an enlightened principle. But how does that feel to the aliens? – Captain Janeway, VOY: Prime Factors, S1E10 USS Hephaestus

STARFLEET Academy By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller Starfleet academy was a little light this month. It looked like James Davis was wandering around campus by himself. He finished up 5 more course to bring his total up to 41. He did his usual stellar work in getting distinction in all five courses. Brenda Miller did show up at the end of the month to take five course but the professors didn’t get them graded till after the month finished. This does mean that next month Brenda should see a Boothby as she now has 51 courses done. She did her excellent work with 4 distinctions and one honor. The honor was in Engineering so if you need her she will probably } be in engineering trying to get a distinction next time. Anyone can take STARFLEET Academy courses. It is a perk of being a member of STARFLEET. So take a look at the STARFLEET Academy course catalog and follow Dr. Seuss’ advice: The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go. To take any STARFLEET Academy course go to http://acad.sfi.org/ Let’s get studying… Have fun! Live Long and Prosper!
