HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

F r o m t h e R ea d y R o o m Greeting from your Captain, Lately I have been trying to give a theme to the pictures in the Anvil. This month I looked up different genres that have been placed into Star Trek. I hope you enjoy the samples through out the newsletter. If you have a favorite then drop me a line either on my email or on the Facebook group. I have added a little fun. In this newsletter there are five hidden starship ({) icons. See if you can find all five. Answers will be in next month issue. Note, this is not one of them. Do you have an interesting idea for the Anvil? Do you have a theme that you might want us to explore? Do you have an article, news story or fictional story that you would like to share? Then send you idea and stories to the email address below. Capt. XO Briefing Ahh. These lazy days of late summer. They call us to put our feet up and relax with a frosty glass of iced tea. And I’m enjoying every minute of summer and not complaining about the heat after the winter we had. On to business, well, interesting information maybe? Filming has started on Star Wars episode VII. On or around July 29 the cast and crew arrived on the remote island Skellig Michael, off the coast of Ireland to film for three days. The island is a tourist attraction because of an ancient monastery. It is also a Special Protection Area for the birds on the island, and it’s mating season for those birds. Birdwatch Ireland is concerned about the effect filming will have on the nests. The crew did obtain the necessary permits Concerning ship’s business, there is nothing pressing, so enjoy the rest of the summer. We’ll have the elections for Second Officer and the EC in September or October. That’s all for now. Pat Hicks booklady44@charter.net USS HEPHAESTUS

Ship’s Log July 12, 2014 – Captain’s Cookout We had the Annual summer Captain’s Cookout. We cooked Hamburgers and Hot Dogs. Some people brought steak or sandwiches. We also had chips, cookies and pop to drink. Also a cake was there for Sue Ellen’s Birthday (Shhhhh. we are not telling how old she is just that she still looks 29). Star Trek and World Cup Soccer were watched on the TV. Also Star Trek Scene It was played. Donald won the Munchkin game. His prize was a gift card to Barnes and Nobles. Matthew won the Texas Hold’em Tournament. He beat his dad in the heads up round. Finally, Pete won Dalmuti with his prize being a Carmike Theater Gift Card. All in all a great time. Attendance: 25 People June 18, 2014 – Alabama Theater (From Ensign Donald Arnold’s log) We had a great turnout for The Alabama Theatre’s showing of STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN. I, Captain MarkAdam Miller, his wife Brenda, and Roy Green were there. The Captain, a young woman named Haley and I participated in the Khan screaming Khan-test. The Captain won, letting the young lady pick first. She chose the TWOK phaser. The Captain let me choose next. I chose the STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN poster. Finally, the Captain got his prize; tickets to the rest of the season’s movies at The Alabama Theatre. It was a great showing. “What’s on 2nd” in Birmingham provided merchandise for .sale. They even had Vulcan Ale, providing one was of age, of course. All in all it was a great night. The Theatre is always a great place even if your just there for the scenery. Of course, we also heard The Mighty Wurlitzer. It, as always, was beautiful. It was my first visit and I loved it! This ends my log. Arnold out. Attendance: 4 crewmen Personnel Updates: Ensign Donald Arnold is working hard in Starfleet Academy. He has received 4 more Cadet Star Awards. They are: Andorian Orientation College, College of Chapter Development, College of Genealogy and Caitian Orientation College. Congratulations Donald. (If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: cohephaestus@bellsouth.net. Also your personal updates can give your Captain added info to help get you recognition and awards at summit for your accomplishments).

Star Trek Fiction Star Trek: The New Adventures: Time Travel: The Shoot Out By: Donald Arnold The entire saloon was quiet. Bill drank a glass of water, walked outside, and waited. The clock struck noon as James Arman walked out of the bank. He snarled, “You ready to die?” Bill didn’t speak. He didn’t tell the Cartwrights he was leaving when he did. He waited without response. “I said are you ready to die, kid?” James snarled again. Bill responded, “It’s nice that you still have an imagination.” That’s all Bill had to say. A man popped up on the roof of the bank, one on the side of the saloon, and two out of the alley by the local barber shop. People watched through the windows. “You’re outnumbered. This just means a quicker death,” Bill looked somewhat disturbed at the surprise number. But that’s when he heard the hooves of horses. The preacher stood in the door of the church, praying for peace in the situation. Bill looked over his shoulder as James cussed at him and swore he would die. His men cocked their guns. The horses came in view then. It was the Cartwrights, Spock, and even Leah McCoy. They all drew their guns and so did Bill. Six against five, that’s how it started. Bill eyed the man on top of the bank and fired. The man fell. The two from the alley were shot down by Little Joe and Hoss. Adam and Leah took out the one by the saloon. Bill and Ben looked at James. He started shooting, missing them both and nearly hitting Hoss. Bill fired. James fell. The sheriff rushed out of his office to make congratulations. After accepting and bidding goodbye to the Cartwrights, Bill and the others rode out of sight. They got far off, beamed up, and that solved one problem. After materializing, Bill went to the bridge. He tapped his staff and they warped out. Destination: home, the future. Spock asked, “Captain, now that we’ve returned, where do you think we should visit next in time?” Bill said, “Next time, we time travel, I’ve heard of this great little town called Mayberry. For now though, we can rest.”{ No sooner had he said that than suddenly Alexander said, “Captain, Qo’nos is hailing.” Bill responded, “On screen.” It was Martok, who said, “Captain, we have a problem.” Bill asked, “What is it?” Martok then went pale as he recounted, “The Cardassians have attacked Andoria and are threatening war. They’re blackmailing us with something very important.” Bill pondered, “Important?” Martok nodded, “The Sword of Kahless.” THE END…? NASA and Kirk Tweeting Some of you may remember back ack in 2013, Shatner tweeted Astronaut Chris Hadfield, Hadfield “@Cmdr_Hadfield Are you tweeting from space? MBB”(My Best, Bill) Bill). Hadfield Replied,“@WilliamShatner “@WilliamShatner Yes, Standard Orbit, Captain Captain. And we’re detecting signs of life on the surface.” On Saturday Aug 2, Shatner asked, “How is @NASA doing today?” NASA doing their best geek replied,“@WilliamShatner “@WilliamShatner Good day, Captain. #ISS is in standard orbit and Commander Swanson has the conn. Reviews X-Men Days of Future Past By Donald Arnold (Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article) This movie was very good in terms of how they are taking the franchise. Let’s start with the dystopian future. That and its character design were great. Next, the past, one of the biggest movie points, which they portrayed the past, its figures, and so on amazingly. The one thing I wasn’t fond of was the fact that the sentinels of the future looked like the Destroyer from Asgard got ripped off. Now, to the plot points. Okay, Wolverine and Victor weren’t recruited until after this past timeline. Now, they seemed to always be together but not in DOFP. Where was Victor? Was he conveniently not there at the time these events were taking place? A good point was the part of the Professor we never saw before, the distraught young man who had lost the hope he once had. It was played very well. Quicksilver and his family left much to the imagination. They even hinted perhaps the father of Quicksilver was our metal-bending friend Magneto. Now, questions. Where were Cyclops, Storm, and the other famous ones when they were needed? They didn’t appear in the past. Mystique was the dangerous villain-like character. Even Magneto was playing good, for the moment. That all changed when he had a chance to turn into the Magneto we know. The last main scene shows the new future which people will love. The post credit scene is our big peek into X-Men Apocalypse.

RATING: AAAAa The Last Dragon (Throwback Review) By Donald Arnold (Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article) I recently watched The Last Dragon. I have to say I loved this movie. Now for those of you who haven’t seen this, you should. For those who have, you know what I mean when I say that Bruce Leroy takes it in this movie. This movie follows a young man who is a karate teacher, and has supposedly learned all he can. When he wishes to learn more, he’s sent to find “The Master.” He searches in a fortune cookie shop, faces Sho’Nuff, the Shogun of Harlem, battles an evil music producer trying to get his distasteful artist through in the business, and finally battles for the girl of his dreams against all odds to find out who The Master is. Win or lose, there’s something inside of him he must discover in this movie that is amazing for fans of karate as well as a great movie.

RATING: AAAAA (Did I miss something? You have an interesting movie or TV show you would like to review or be reviewed? Then send me your suggestions and articles to cohephaestus@bellsouth.net) USS HEPHAESTUS
