HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

F r o m t h e R ea d y R o o m Greeting from your Captain, This is kind of short since the last Anvil just came out just a couple of weeks ago. Also the 4th of July weekend delayed somethings. Do you have an interesting idea for the Anvil? Do you have a theme that you might want us to explore? Do you have an article, news story or fictional story that you would like to share? Then send you idea and stories to the email address below. As a reminder, the Alabama Theater is showing Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan on July 18th. The Alabama Theater is hoping people will come in costume. Look on our Facebook group for further updates. Capt. XO Briefing I’m really enjoying the summer, heat and all, after the winter we had. It seems like summer is the shortest season. We celebrate Memorial Day, then turn around and it’s Labor Day. Now I’ll get right to club business. First, belated congratulations to Neil Yawn for receiving the Letter of Commendation for outstanding command and leadership of the 1st Battalion 2nd Brigade. Way to go, Neil! This Fall we will have nominations and a vote for Second Officer and the Executive Committee. Details will come later. In the meantime be thinking about who would do a great job in these positions. Those holding these positions now are doing an outstanding job and might be persuaded to remain in the positions That’s all for now. Enjoy the rest of the summer. Pat Hicks booklady44@charter.net

Ship’s Log June 19, 2014 – Dinner with Friends Captain MarkAdam Miller and the 2nd Officer Lt. Commander Brenda Miller went to dinner with Fleet Captain Scott Crawford from the Haise who was in Birmingham for some MS activities. We had a wonderful time getting to know each other. Attendance: 2 crewmen June 21, 2014 - Social The Miller’s brought a new game called Tenzi. It uses 10 six-sided dice per person. The goal is to achieve a predetermined pattern. There are basic patterns, such as, all sixes, but also an expansion deck of cards which gives over 75 different patterns/goals. We also played Batman Uno which the Captain won. Video games were on the TV as well. We enjoyed pizza (paid by donation) and sodas. .

Attendance: 14 people.

June 27, 2014 – Warp 11.9 (Kingdom Comics) Kingdom Comics was host to a Star Trek discussion group. The Discussion was run by Diedra Robinson of the Hephaestus. We discussed the show Enterprise. Refreshments included Borg Chips, Andorian cookies and Romulan Punch. A fun time was had by all. Ensign Donald Arnold’s Log entry about Warp 11.9 We had an all in all great Warp 11.9. Our regent Enterprise expert Diedra Robinson was breaking the scale of fashion with her lovely outfit. To the matter of discussion, though, it covered everything from Trip to Augments to how tall the actresses of Enterprise are. Then it delved into convention stories, first about Enterprise, then about anything. All in all a great night. Attendance: 5 crewmen & 2 guests Personnel Updates: Ensign Donald Arnold is working with the Starfleet Academy to produce a course on Gilligan’s Island. The Academy has several different courses on a variety of television shows. This should be interesting to see what he comes up with. Donald also is plowing through the academy courses and has finished 141 courses with getting Distinction in 18 of them and With Honors in 58 of them. (If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: cohephaestus@bellsouth.net. Also your personal updates can give your Captain added info to help get you recognition and awards at summit for your accomplishments).

Captain Archer: I hope nobody's in a hurry to get back home... Starfleet seems to think we're ready to begin our mission.

Starfleet Marine Corps Greetings, MGen Neil Yawn Preformed 14-hours volunteer service to the Brookside Fire Rescue Service. MGen Yawn visited the U S Park Service National Sea Shore at Narvarre Beach, Florida. BGen Roy Green, Reserve (#19940) exp 4/14, has advised me that he has applied for renewal via the US Mail. He has received no word on the process. He advised me he mailed it in April 2014. The 654th MSG is looking for members. There is a completely different set of Academy schools for those trying to get the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which means all ranks will be Marine ranks, and Reserve which mean you stay primarily Fleet and only use Marine ranks when doing marine stuff. Contact Major General Neil Yawn if you are interested or have questions. Looking to boost your Boothby Awards? The Starfleet Marines Academy may be your answer. Check out what SFMC Academy has for you. Major General Neil Yawn, OIC 1 BN, 2BDE, OIC 654 MSG

Quotable Quotes Lt. Reed: They have two settings: stun and kill... It'd be best not to confuse them. [about phase pistols] Commander Dolum: You don't want to know my specialty! Captain Archer: Let me guess... stinking up the room? Ensign Hoshi Sato: Maybe it's a log. What do you think? Commander Tucker: Beats me. Could be a laundry list... or instructions on how to conquer the universe? Subcommander T'Pol: I've run a check through the Starfleet database. You might be pleased to know that this is the first recorded incident of a human male becoming pregnant. Commander Tucker: Just how I always wanted to get into the history books. [Porthos has run from the shuttlepod to some trees on an alien world] Commander Tucker: Going where no dog has gone before. [on Archer's forthcoming first mission with the Enterprise] Admiral Maxwell Forrest: Don't screw this up.

Star Trek Fiction Star Trek: The New Adventures: Time Travel: When Are We? By: Donald Arnold The Enterprise J was shaken. Bill grabbed the fal-tor-rakh, using it to pull up against the arms of the Captain’s chair. He shook off the tired feeling and said, “That’s the last time I just blast power from the staff into the warp core to see if we can make the ship go over warp 15!” He looked to Data B. “Mr. Soong,” he requested, “where are we or… when are we?” The android cocked his head and said, “Earth. The year appears to be… 1865.” Bill looked slightly shocked, but not too much. “Beam us to the first known coordinates,” he said gathering his landing party. The materializing beam opened on a dirt path. Bill tapped his staff and fit everyone to look the era, weapons and all. His own staff even looked to be a walking staff. He heard horses’ hooves. Two men rode up. One introduced himself as Hoss and the other, Little Joe. Hoss said, “You folks look tired. Let’s get you all to the Ponderosa and see if Pa can help you.” He looked at their weapons, “That’s impressive. Y’all here on vacation or business?” Bill said, “Vacation. I’m William Kirk. Call me Bill. The others are Spock, Bones, Data B., and Jack. Spock and Data are from Europe. That’s why they look so different.” Hoss nodded. He hadn’t seen Spock’s ears. The Ponderosa came in sight. Hoss and Little Joe brought out a man clearly older than both of them. He spoke, “My name’s Ben Cartwright, this is Hoss, that’s Little Joe, and that boy tending to the horses is Adam.” He shook hands with Bill who made all his introductions. “So, where’s the town?” asked Bill. Ben replied, “I’ll take you there tomorrow. Tonight you stay with us.” After a good night’s rest, Bill, Ben, Spock, Bones, Hoss, Adam, and Little Joe rode into town. The others said they’d take care of the Ponderosa. When they went into the saloon Bill saw one of the girls being gawked at. He went to the drunk man and said in one of his more serious tones, “Stop it unless you want to get on my bad side. I’m a Christian man, and don’t think you’ve got right to be doin’ that.” The man got up to leave but before he left, he said, “You messed with the wrong man. Tomorrow at noon, meet me out front and see if you can take me. Gun on gun.” He walked out, steamed. Ben told Bill the man’s name was James Arman. He was an outlaw who the Cartwright’s tried to avoid. After breakfast, Bill met the preacher. The preacher already knew him. “They call you Bill, right? The one who challenged James Arman?” Bill nodded, saying, “As a Christian man, where I come from, he wouldn’t be doin’ that. Only certain people still do and the women who let them are raised to.” The preacher said, “Sounds like you come from a good place with not much bad.” Bill laughed a little. “You’d be surprised.” After they left Bill talked with Ben and the others rode in and were informed. They all shopped and looked around. Not long after, they headed back. Back at the Ponderosa, Little Joe and Hoss set Bill up a shooting course so he could practice. He was an amazing shot, not even using his powers. He talked with Ben, prayed, and went to bed, knowing the next day would be tense.
