HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

F r o m t h e R ea d y R o o m Greetings, I don’t think I could have done more in May if I had tried: I saw Star Trek into Darkness, twice; I went to Ohio to see my parents; I attended/worked at the Alabama Phoenix Festival. The APF gave me the opportunity to see some great actors and a lot of different people which made for an enjoyable time. June will be relatively slow compared to May. The June social will be games and discussing the new Star Trek movie. The July social will be the Captains cook out on July 20, 2013. This is a week later then usual because of scheduling conflicts so please mark it on your calendars. We will have the usual snacks and drinks. Please bring what main dish you want to eat. Games and videos will be playing all day. The social is a fun time with all the people who come. As always see you around the ship, Capt. MarkAdam Miller cohephaestus@bellsouth.net

XO Briefing I was reading this article in “HomeTouch” which my church sends each week. The article is about the month of June and has some very interesting facts about it. First of all, it is one of only four months that contain thirty days. Also, it is the month with the longest daylight hours of the year in our hemisphere. The article then lists unusual events that are celebrated during the entire month of June. A few are Great Outdoors Month, National Adopt-A-Cat Month, National Iced Tea Month, Turkey Lovers Month, and my personal favorite: Potty Training Awareness Month. And if you are wondering how the month got its name, some people think it was named after the Roman goddess Juno, wife of Jupiter. Now you’ve had your trivia fix for the month. Concerning ship news, our next major meeting/social will be the Captain’s Cookout coming up on July 20th at Pete and Sue Ellen’s house. The event usually begins about 2:00 pm. There will be the usual games, side dishes/snacks and drinks, and viewing of favorite shows. Bring whatever your want to put on the grill. Pete will be posting more on the list serve shortly. Finally, since this an odd numbered year, it’s time for a vote of confidence for our commanding officer, MarkAdam. This will take place in the fall; more on that next month. That’s all this month. See you at the social. Pat Hicks booklady44@charter.net

Several members talked with Star Trek Fans about Star Fleet and the U.S.S. Hephaestus in particular. Attendance: 7+ people. May 11, 2013 Social The social this month was an outing to see the new Star Trek Movie. We went to the Galleria food court for dinner which made it possible for people to have their choice of things to choose from. We then went to the movie at the Rave which is now Carmike cinemas. The theater was pretty full and the group sat down front. It was an enjoyable time all around. Attendance: 8 people May 24-26, 2013, Alabama Phoenix Festival The Alabama Phoenix Festival was a great event. Several people from the Hephaestus were there. We had a great turn out for our Landing Party that featured Borg Chips, Tribble Kibble and Romulan Punch. We also had several people sign up for emails to get more information about the club. Attendance: 9+ people Personnel Updates: Haley Youngblood completed her 2nd semester at Montevallo with a 3.2 GPA. She is a member of Delta Gamma and was selected to be a Pi Chi counselor for the summer. She also started her first job, working for the University in the Marketing department..

If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: cohephaestus@bellsouth.net. Also your personal updates can give your Captain added info to help get you recognition and an award at summit for your accomplishments.

Starfleet Marine Corps Greetings, MGen Neil Yawn & Lt Lynnette Yawn visited the National Sea Shore in Navarre, Florida. The beach was beautiful, but the wind and temperature was very bad; 40s for the temps with 40-50 mph gust of wind. The bay had 6 foot waves. This was not the normal for early May (So much for global warming). The Yawns also attended the final UAB Baseball home game where there was a special guest; a rep from Paramount Pictures. The rep gave 2 sets of tickets & a new XBox trek game for the drawing. MGen Neil Yawn had his name called for one of the sets of tickets. The Yawns went to Johnny Rockets where they met Capt MarkAdam & Lt Cdr Brenda Miller. The Yawns & Millers attended the premier to the new Star Trek movie and had a chat with our favorite Klingon, Mike Owens. We did do some recruiting before & after the movie. Looking to boost your Boothby Awards? The Starfleet Marines Academy may be your answer. Check out what SFMC Academy has for you. Major General Neil Yawn, OIC 1 BN, 2BDE, OIC 654 MSG USS HEPHAESTUS

Star Trek News Alabama Phoenix Festival Review (by MarkAdam Miller) The Alabama Phoenix Festival was a big success. It is surprising how they pack so much into 3 days. This year I had more time to see other events than just the Star Trek ones. The main star was Colin Ferguson, the Sheriff form Eureka TV Series. He was nice and very friendly. When I first met him I said “Hi, Mr. Ferguson.” He replied, “Call me Colin.” I jokily said, “If I do that I probably end up calling you Sheriff.” Colin replied that would be fine by him. During his panels he was warm, friendly and told a lot of amusing stories about his time on Eureka. To me, he was very much like his character on the show. Gil Gerard was also there. He talked not only about his time on Buck Rogers but also his work with the Star Trek group in New York that is doing Star Trek Webisodes. He is playing an Admiral in the episode. The next episode is suppose to come out this fall. He was working with them to also do a Buck Rogers show but time constraints are not allowing it. There were 10 Star Trek Panels that ranged from classic Trek to the new Movies. The best panel was of course the Beaming Aboard panel that featured Jeremy Roberts, Science officer under Captain Sulu, and Tim O’Rear, stuntman for William Shatner. These two gentlemen gave a lot of ‘behind the scenes’ with the stars of Star Trek and what is involved in doing Star Trek. They also gave interesting tidbits about the making of movies and TV shows. They just made the Star Trek panels a great success. Two other panels I want to comment on were “The Commendation goes to...” and “She Canna Take Much More of This!” Both of these panels drew the audience and kept them on the edge of their seats as the discussion went on. The Commendation goes to…” was a panel discussing which or who did it best. Van Allen Plexico gave a lively discussion that pulled out a lot of opinions form the audience that lead to some interesting votes for Captain, 1st officer, Doctor, Engineer, TV Show and Movie. The “She Canna Take Much More of This!” Panel was a lively discussion with Stephanie Osborn (NASA Scientist), Tim Stacks (aerospace engineer) and Steve Charleson (aerospace Engineer). After this panel was finished I felt that I just might see a Starship before I die. The Alabama Phoenix Festival provided a great time and should not be missed if you are in the Birmingham area. I feel that this convention will be around for a loooong time Klingon can now be translated with Bing Not sure how to say something in Klingon. Bing Translator comes to the rescue. You can now translate English into Klingon or any of other of the 41 languages in their translator program. Bing, in partnership with Paramount, is offering Klingon on its web base translator and Bing’s Windows Phone App. The translator will translate a phrase using the regular letters of the alphabet or you can set it for Klingon (Kronos) that will use the Klingon Alphabet. This was developed by Eric Andeen, a Microsoft engineer who speaks fluent Klingon, and Marc Okrand, a linguist and Star Trek consultant of the Klingon language. Marc Okrand originally fleshed out the Klingon language using words James Doohan, Scotty, created for the Klingons for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. USS HEPHAESTUS
