HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.
About the Cover Photo: This is one of many Star Trek ships that Scott Crawford (USS Haise) has designed and built from Lego bricks. These are NOT kits.

F r o m t h e R ea d y R o o m Brenda and I went to Summit 2014 in Vicksburg, MS. We had an enjoyable time with those from other ships in Region 2. We also were able to meet the new Commander of Starfleet(CS). I even was allowed to throw a pie in his face for charity. Several of the pictures in the newsletter are of Lego ships that were on display at the Summit. The ships were built by Scott Crawford, Ph.D a member of the U.S.S. Haise. Check out our Facebook group at : https://www.facebook.com/groups/Hephaestus2004/
I am always looking for people who want to write a Trek news article or a movie/television review, or even a short story they might want to share. I am also always looking for Star Trek pictures to post in The Anvil. If you have a costume you want to show off or a meeting you were at please send me pictures to include in the Anvil as well. I’m always looking for interesting items to include in our newsletter. As always see you around the ship, Capt. MarkAdam Miller cohephaestus@bellsouth.net P.S. Please note that we are changing the dates for the May and June Poker and social because of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. The will be the third weekends instead of the second weekend.
XO Briefing I’m excited! We’ve made it through a bitter winter and into spring, my favorite season of the year. At least I think we have. I’m looking forward to warm days and wearing shorts and t-shirts. And that brings me to ship’s business. We have two major socials coming up. One is the Spring Cookout on April 12 at Pete and Sue Ellen’s. The other is the Summer Cookout or Captain’s Cookout on July 2. As usual, bring your main course for the grill; drinks and snacks are furnished. These events usually start at 2:00 pm, but Pete will post all the details on the list later. By the way, the Summer Cookout will also take place at the Mohneys. Thanks to them for hosting our events. In other business, take a few minutes and check out the Anvil. There’s a schedule of upcoming events, a listing of expiration dates on Starfleet memberships, and a section on upcoming conventions in the region, all right in our newsletter. Thanks to Brenda and MarkAdam for their work putting it together. That’s all this time. See you next time. Pat Hicks booklady44@charter.net USS HEPHAESTUS

Ship’s Log February 8, 2014 Social We had a great social. We had pizza to eat. We played the game Dixit. Brenda took the lead early in the game and did not let up. Danny came close to catching up with her but she won in the end. Several people also play Xbox Lego Marvel Superheroes. Attendance: 14 people. February 27, 2014 APF Warp 11.9 The party was a great success. We watched “Star Trek Into Darkness” and discussed the film’s role in the Star Trek Universe. We had Borg Chips and Romulan Punch. Members in Attendance: 2 March 7-8, 2014 Summit 2014 The Summit was held in Vicksburg, MS. It was a great time with several interesting panels on Lego, Criminal Investigation, board games and other topics. We also had as a guest, Karole Selmon who was Yareena in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Code of Honor”. The poker tournament had 7 participants, Brenda Miller won 3rd place. We also had the pie toss to raise money for MS. I was allowed to toss the Pie into the new CS’s face. I hope he says something nice in the court martial papers. With the poker game, pie toss and auction/sales we raised about $2000 for MS. All in all a good time was had. I also recommend Goldie’s BBQ if you want a good place to eat. Lucy Ferron announced that she will be leaving Region 2 and moving to Texas. She recently got married and that it where they will be living. Some photo highlights from the Summit are scattered throughout this newsletter. Members in Attendance: 2 Personnel Updates: Congratulations to Katrina Mohney for winning Cadet of the Year 2013.
If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: cohephaestus@bellsouth.net. Also your personal updates can give your Captain added info to help get you recognition and an award at summit for your accomplishments.

Starfleet Marine Corps Greetings, The 654th MSG is looking for members. There is a completely different set of Academy schools for those trying to get the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which means all ranks will be Marine ranks, and Reserve which mean you stay primarily Fleet and only use Marine ranks when doing marine stuff. Contact Major General Neil Yawn if you are interested or have questions. Looking to boost your Boothby Awards? The Starfleet Marines Academy may be your answer. Check out what SFMC Academy has for you. Major General Neil Yawn, OIC 1 BN, 2BDE, OIC 654 MSG

Star Trek News John Scalzi’s Redshirts to come to TV. If you read and enjoyed John Scalzi’s book Redshirts then you may be in for a treat. FX is creating a miniseries based on the book. It is being developed by veteran feature producer Jon Shestack (Dan In Real Life) and producer-director Ken Kwapis (Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants) and his partner Alexandra Beattie. Redshirts, which won a Hugo award 2013, is about five new recruits and their adventures in the 25st century. The main plot is that their fellow crewmates seem to be dying off at an alarming rate. The cause seems to be from a Sci-Fi TV show from the early 21th century. Here’s hoping it is as good as the book. (trekmovie.com)
On to the next Great Adventure The following are some noted people of Star Trek who have passed in recent months: Sarah Marshal: Died January 18, 2014 at the age of 80. She was in various TV shows of the 60’s including Twilight Zone and Get Smart. She is known to Star Trek fans as Dr. Janet Wallace from the “The Deadly Years (TOS).” Her last name may be the inspiration for Carol Marcus’ fake name (Carol Wallace) that she used to get aboard the Enterprise in Star Trek Into Darkness Hal Sutherland: Co-Founder of Filmation. Filmation brought us the animated series of Star Trek Joe Longo: Prop master for Star Trek, Wrath of Kahn, The Search for Spock, The Next Generation, and Deep Space Nine. (trekmovie.com)
Harlan Ellison’s “City on the Edge of Forever” coming out in Graphic Novel Harlan Ellison’s original screen play “City on the Edge of Forever” is being published by IDW. It will feature Scott and David Tipton and illustrated by J.K. Woodward. The story will be in five issues staring in June. This is the
original script that Mr. Ellison submitted to the series and not the finished product that was produced. Mr. Ellison will be overseeing the project. (TrekToday.com) (Did I miss something?
