HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our STARFLEET chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

From the Ready Room Greetings from your Captain, Looking for something to do this summer? There are several things you can be involved with. The Hephaestus is doing panels for both Play-On Con and Hoover Library Sci-Fi/ Fantasy Festival. I personally will be helping at the Magic City Con (check out conventions on pg. 15). If you can’t make it to those then maybe you can help out at Exploring Trek which is held the fourth Thursday at Kingdom Comics. If you want to lead the discussion, send me a email with what you what to discuss and which Thursday you want. As always you can write articles for the Anvil. We always looking for reviews of books, movies, conventions, games or attractions. The books and movies can be old or new. A review of your favorite book or movie would be a welcome addition to our newsletter. Other ideas for writing for the newsletter can be found on pg. 14. The Hephaestus is what we as a group make it, not I as Captain. Feel free to bring your ideas up and let’s work on them till we can make it go. As our motto say Always Onward. Don’t forget to catch the Ship Status’s Report Monday nights around 6:30 on FB Hephaestus – STARFLEET group and the repost on FB U.S.S. Hephaestus page.

As always, see you around the ship, Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller cohephaestus@bellsouth.net, www.facebook.com/groups/Hephaestus2004/

XO Briefing Hello Crew, There are several movies coming out at the movie theaters like Guardians of the Galaxy, vol 2 and several more to see. I am going to take a few days off to start hiking at Oak mountain if the weather permits. I am going to make plans on going to Atlanta, GA for a day and Chattanooga, TN. I will post dates on these trips if anyone wants to go. If you need me, I’ll be with Section 31, Lt. Phillip Mangina, phillip3056@charter.netv USS Hephaestus

The Andorians By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller The Andorians were first seen in the TOS episode Journey to Babel. They are blue aliens with antennas (instead of ears) and white hair. We don’t get much back ground on the Andorians and may not have a true picture of them because one of the Andorians (Thelev) is a spy for the Orions who were trying to disrupt the conference which was trying to shut them down.. The Andorians appear in the back ground of couple episodes of TOS (The Gamesters of Triskelion, Whom Gods Destroy, The Lights of Zetar). The reason being that the makeup process cost time and money so they were not a good match for a show on a shoestring budget.

THY'LEK SHRAN By Kris Bishop (Passenger) Shran, an Andorian, which is a militaristic and xenophobic race, was a very interesting character in the show Enterprise. While we didn't see Shran very often, he did show up at least once or twice a season. One of the first times we see him is in the episode where he, along with a few fellow Andorians, first meet Captain Archer and some of his crew. The episode revolves around Shran swearing up and down the Vulcans are hiding some sort of an array at a sacred temple and, with the help of Archer and the rest of the “Pink Skins” (Andorians have primarily blue skin), expose the array at the temple which raises the distrust even further that Shran has for Vulcans. There are a few other episodes that involve Shran, but I thought this episode best showed the mentality of Shran. He is very distrusting of anyone who is not Andorian, even of captain Archer, who saved Shran’s life and helped him on several occasions. One thing that we learn about Shran very quickly, is he HATES being in debt to someone, especially if they are a “Pink Skin”. Shran overall is a very noble and honorable person. If I could choose anyone from the Enterprise series to spend a day with, it'd definitely be Shran.

The Andorians would show up in the background of two of the movies (Motion Picture and Voyage Home) as well as two episodes of TNG (The Offspring and Captain's Holiday). This was mainly to connect to the origin al series. Andorians did not get center stage until Enterprise. Enterprise gave us a better look at them as opposites of the Vulcans. Andorians were passionate, emotional aliens compared to the cold logical Vulcans. This is an interesting contrast since the Vulcan planet is a hot dessert vs the Andorians planet that is an ice planet. The cold-logic Vulcan from a hot planet compared to the hot-passion Andorian from a cold planet. The Andorians were a break out character for the Enterprise and gave Enterprise something different from the other series. The only problem that I had with the Enterprise Andorians is that they had ears along with the antennas. This seems odd for the aliens to have to different sound appendages. Except for this odd change, Enterprise made the Andorians an interesting addition to the Star Trek universe.

If it involves killing Tellarites, I'm all for it. – Commander Shran, ENT: United USS Hephaestus

While on an Away Mission By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller Previously: An investigation into the dead body of a young Amanda Grayson has brought up more questions than answers. The Hephaestus crew investigation has turned to time travel anomalies and our 1st officer checking with Section 31 to see what the Vulcans the need decalithium for and how it ties in to time travel.

and added another point to the Guardian date and five more to the Amanda Grayson time. After I finished up my additions to Roy and Andi’s report I headed to the bridge to start the time probe launches. When I reached the bridge Roy and Matt were already there making the preparations for launching the probes. Roy was at the science station and Matt was going back and forth between navigation and weapons station since both stations were needed to make sure the probe went where we wanted.

****** Phillip, the 1st officer, took a warp shuttle to Orion to meet with a contact in Section 31. He took crewman Lewis Stockham as a cover, i.e. review the crewman’s skills. I had approved crewman Stockham’s posting but have not reviewed his complete background. Something is different about Mr. Stockham but I cannot put my finger on it yet. Hopefully Phillip won’t recruit him for Section 31. Phillip said he and Lewis should be back before we complete the time probe investigation.

Roy turned when he saw me enter the bridge and stood up. I walked over to him, “Are we ready?” Roy picked up a P.A.D.D., “Just need to know which one you wanted to start with and then it’s show time.” I look over the 17 time points we picked, “Since we have two points in time we can send a probe to each time. Let’s go with the Guardian point that is right after the glitch in time and the middle point of the Amanda Grayson points. That should give us enough to maybe delete a few of the other points.” Roy handed the data to Matt and he programed the first two probes. Matt turned to me, “Captain, ready to launch on your order.”

Flo and Matt’s work on the time probes didn’t take long. The hard part was the research that Roy and Andi were working on. After two days of research, their report gave two possible moments around the Guardian of Forever glitch (2233) and ten moments for the Amanda Grayson body age (2258). The Amanda Grayson calculation was harder because we only had an approximate age where the Guardian glitch was more specific. I did my own calculations

“Launch,” I order thinking for once something is happening that is not giving me a headache. (To be continued)

Reviews Books Eve Dallas series by J. D. Robb – Review by John Miller (Father of FCapt MarkAdam Miller) This review follows the March Anvil when detectives were cited, and the April Anvil which featured robots. This mystery series has elements of future science fiction which may appeal to fans of either interest. It is set in New York in 2059, following the Urban Wars. Eve Dallas, the main character, is a police lieutenant on the homicide squad. The cases are always interesting especially as the facts are gathered to arrest the suspect(s). She is married to Roark who is very wealthy, a former criminal, and a computer whiz. Her partner is the daughter of flower child culture. The culture of the future has some of the same elements of Brave New World and Logan’s Run. The technology has androids as servants in many homes and assigned to some of the more mundane work elsewhere. There are Auto Chefs which serve as a super microwaves that can serve up just about any meal. Travel is not limited to one dimension in the city, but can occur on several planes. Travel to space is common, and many of the penal institutions are located in space. Hologram experiences are a part of the everyday life of the rich. Again, these are mysteries, but can make a good reading experience for those interested in science fiction. Rate: none given

Movies Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 – By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller Marvel’s latest movie is Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2. Why Vol. 2 you may ask? In the first movie Peter Quill (Starlord) listens to a tape that his mom made called Greatest Hits, Vol. 1. The songs from that tape play throughout Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 1. The second tape his mom gave him plays throughout this movie., hence Vol.2. The music is from the time I went to high school so it is nostalgic to hear it used in the movie. The movie does not disappoint. The actions starts at the beginning and does not let up. The cast hasn’t changed. The only ones missing is the Nova Corps people (Glenn Close and John C. Reilly). Added is Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell which bring some interesting performance to the movie. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista still work together well and bring more interest to the characters they play. Vin Diesel (voice of Groot) and Bradley Cooper (voice of Rocket) do well for the voices. Bradley Cooper especially makes the voice of Rocket feel like Racoons can talk. I would love hang with Rocket. I would almost trade my 1st officer, Phillip, for him…Almost. The acting of the other Guardians also make Groot and Rocket believable. Marvel does it again. They have made a movie that keeps you wanting more. The only down side of this film is that I noticed the language seems more salty. I don’t know if this is just Marvel making the movie more adult or if the success of Deadpool and its language is making Marvel think it’s okay to up the language factor. All in all, the best I can say about the movie is that, “I am Groot!!!” Rate: AAAAa (lost one because of language)

Travel EnterTrainment Junction – Review by Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller While in Ohio, my family went to EnterTrainment Junction. It is a 25,000 square feet display of model trains set up in three distinct eras of American history, 1860’s, 1940-50’s and the 1970’s. If you are in to trains or model trains then this is the place for you. The dioramas are set up in beautiful hills to set apart the different eras. The museum map handout aids in exploring the displays by have a list of things to look for as you travel along the dioramas. Each display also has a plaquered with a list of more things that you can find in there. The most challenging is the ten dinosaurs hidden within the display. I can say I only found 6 of them. Along with the dioramas there also an American Railroad Museum that gives facts on how the Railroad affected life in American. This is a ‘can’t miss’ for any railroad fan. There is also an A-MAZE-N FUNHOUSE that we did not get to. The website gives several mazes that are inside and sounds like a lot of fun. You might need to plan two days if you want to do both. This is a long distance to travel for those in the Alabama area but if you get up to the Cincinnati or Dayton area and have some time to kill this is a good place to go. You can also do what we did afterwards and travel to Montgomery Inn in Cincinnati for the best BBQ ribs that I know of. (http://entertrainmentjunction.com/, http://www.montgomeryinn.com/) Rate: AAAAA

Phillip Mangina Jr. (1st Officer), Director, Hephaestus Red Shirt Challenge I think Phillip is trying to kill me. Star Trek News & More The Orville – Spoof or Flop From the creative minds of Seth MacFarlane and John Favreau comes Fox’s new comic sci-fi show, The Orville. The show will follow the exploratory vessel U.S.S. Orville. The ship is captained by Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane). Included in the cast is Adrianne Palicki (Bobbi from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Penny Johnson Jerald (Star Trek: DS9 favorite, Kasidy Yates). Adrianne plays Kelly Grayson, the first officer of the Orville and Ed's ex-wife. Penny plays Dr. Claire Finn, one of the most accomplished physicians in the Planetary Union. The show will be a parody of Star Trek and other Sci-Fi shows. The question is What new ground is this program going to tread that already has not been done by Galaxy Quest? Will this become a classic send up or a flop that will jump the shark in the first season? (www.treknews.net , en.wikipedia.org)

Mirror Universe Fans Are you a fan of the Mirror Universe in TOS, DS9 and Enterprise? Do you wonder what the Mirror Universe was like for TNG and Voyager? Wonder no more, this fall IDW will be taking TNG to the Mirror Universe. A preview of the story was handed out during Free Comic Book Day and many are excited for what is to come. IDW has found success with their many Star Trek titles (i.e. Boldly Go, Waypoint, Starfleet Academy, and the Green Lantern crossover). This one looks like it will do just as well. The team (David Tipton, Scott Tipton, and J.K. Woodward) that gave us the Harlan Ellison’s unaltered vision of The City on the Edge of Forever will be the ones heading up this project. (www.treknews.net)

Doctor Who News – By Ensign Matt Boyd Hello Whovians! If you are reading the Anvil (thank you!) then that means you are not in the UK. You are most likely not 11-13 years old and in school. But the children this Doctor Who event is for are in the UK and that age and in school. Doctor Who has teamed up with a company called MicroBit. The school children will be shown a fifty-minute interactive Doctor Who episode in which the children will help the Doctor defeat the Daleks using their Microbit device that they have created using a kit. (http://www.microbit.org/) Two new trailers have come out: the first, a full minute long and the second, showing new clips ending with a glimpse of the Doctor regenerating. It looks like Season 10 will be a great ride. The first episode of Doctor Who starts off with the Doctor posing as a Lecturer in the University, where he meets Bill Potts, who works at the university as a chip server. (I could be wrong.) If you ever wondered what Gallifreyan school children learned in school, then you’re in luck! BBC books have released an illustrated book of Time Lord mythology titled, Myths & Legends. The book comes out in June this year. It is available for pre-order at Amazon and Barnes & Nobles.

Ship’s Log April 8, 2017 – April Cookout

April 27, 2017 - Exploring Trek

We had a good crowd for the April Cookout. We had two first timers, Dylan and Chris. They are looking to be more involved with Hephaestus which will add to our get togethers. We watched the new Star Wars DVD Rogue One. It was enjoyed by everyone. We played Dalmuti and Texas Hold’em Poker. Dalmuti was hard fought and pretty much came down to the wire with a friend of the Mohney’s winning. Texas Hold’em was not as intense but it did come down to MarkAdam and Brenda being Head’s up at the end. MarkAdam was the final victor because his chip quantity had him “big stick” when it came to heads up. We had the normal fair of Hot Dogs and Hamburgers for those who didn’t bring their main dish. We asked for donations to help defer cost for the food and drink that were provided. It was a good social with a lot of fun.

We had a good Exploring Trek this month. Crewman Lewis Stockham lead the group in the discussion of the Mirror Universe. It is nice to have someone else to lead rather than myself as it brings a different perspective. We had two new people who came to check us out and seemed interesting in doing more with us. We also provided cookies and sodas that were pretty much devoured. We also simultaneously broadcasted the discussion over our Facebook group, Hephaestus – STARFLEET. After the event, I shared the broadcast with our Facebook page, U.S.S. Hephaestus. Attendance: 9 People plus others online

Go to login and it will ask if you have a login or need to create one. Use the create one side which will ask you for your STARFLEET SCC # to see if you are a member. The process will take about 24 hours to get your account approved. After 24 hours, you should be able to log in with the name/password you created. An email will be sent when you receive approval. This is one of the perks of being in STARFLEET. So, sign up and learn things.

STARFLEET Marine Corps Members of the STARFLEET Marine Corps include veterans and active duty military as well as people who just prefer a ‘military flavor’ to their Star Trek fan activities. The SFMC is organized along traditional military lines, in the same manner as SFI. However, instead of being organized along Navy lines, and using terms such as ‘Ships’ or ‘Shuttles’, the SFMC uses ground force equivalents such as ‘Brigades’ or ‘Strike Groups’. The Hephaestus Marine Corps is 654th Steel Thunderbolts under the command of Lt General Neil Yawn (OIC). Members include the DIOC 1st Lt. James Davis and Brig. Roy Green. If you would like to know more about our marines, then contact these marines and they will get you started in the Steel Thunderbolts.

Recommendations By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller Robert a. Heinlein books.

Exploring Trek I want to give thanks to Crewman Lewis Stockham for his leading of Exploring Trek in April. We discussed the Mirror Universe. Lewis’ love of those episodes brought a great discussion on many aspects of what makes up the mirror universe. Lewis rounded out the discussion with what would our “mirror self” or “evil self” look like.

I liked Lewis’ final thought: My favorite concept/idea in the Mirror Universe is showing how Humanity can go either way. Hopefully, we will embrace our positive qualities. However, we could embrace our negative qualities. The follow up question for Exploring Trek on Your Own was: How is the Mirror Universe different from the Alternate Timeline that is in the Kelvin Universe? Next Exploring Trek is May 25, 2017. We will be discussing as many epsodes as we can about The Borg Collective. If you would like to lead this discussion then let me know and I will get you plugged in.
