HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

F r o m t h e R ea d y R o o m Greeting from your Captain, How are you feeling about the new season of TV shows? I am Geeking out as there are so many that are geek related. Comic geeks have Gotham and The Flash which is a spin off of The Arrow program. All Geeks in general have Scorpion. Also, Forever, has a science fiction aspect of a man that can not die. This is a great season. The only problem is most of the stuff is on Monday and Tuesday nights. We are tapping about 20 hours on those 2 nights alone. Lucky we have Thursday night to catch up on them. . Next month is the Fall Feast so put it on your calendar because there are many activities going on that day. You will have loads of fun. Capt. MarkAdam Miller cohephaestus@bellsouth.net https://www.facebook.com/groups/Hephaestus2004/

XO Briefing Well, it seems that fall is here. I’ve got to hurry with this report because it seems my cat doesn’t want me to spend time on the computer. I think she’s jealous. She tries to get up by the screen and her cat hairs leap onto the screen. There’s one important item of ship’s business. We need to look at elections for the Executive Committee and Second officer. I’m wondering if the members holding those positions would agree to keep them for another two years. Currently, Brenda Miller is Second Officer, and the EC consists of Danny Potts, Denby Potts, and Sue Ellen Mohney. Also, is anyone else interested in running for a position? If so, elections will be held. One other item. Remember the fall feast coming up in November. That’s all this time.

Star Trek News Bill and Leonard News Bill Shatner and Leonard Nimoy were together again. They did a Volkswagen commercial together that advertises the new electric cars by Volkswagen. The bad news is the commercial is in German. Interesting tidbit is that Bill is in a gold sweater and Leonard is in a Blue sweater. (www.startrek.com)

They are on TV now A couple of members of Star Trek can be seen on TV this season. Scott Bakula (Capt. Archer) is appearing as Agent Dwayne Pride in NCIS: New Orleans. This is a spin off from NCIS which had a story featuring the Scott Bakula character to see how it would work for a show. It was given a green light for the fall season. Also on the show is CCH Pounder as Dr. Loretta Wade. Ms. Pounder is better known as Mrs. Frederic on Warehouse 13. John Cho (the new Sulu) is in the comedy Selfie. His character is Henry, a marketing expert, who is helping a 20 something revamp her self-absorbed image after a embarrassing mishap. His costar is Karen Gillan better know as Amy Pond of Doctor Who. Karen is playing Eliza Dooley. With names like Eliza and Henry I think it is a modern take on Pygmalion (My Fair Lady). If you are looking for Karl Urban you will not find him on Fox as Fox has cancelled the great program Almost Human. Again Fox doesn’t know good Sci-Fi when they see it. (IMDb)

Zoe Saldana’s Favorite Costume Zoe Sladana (New Uhura) was asked by E- Online what her favorite costume is. Zoe’s favorite costume is the dress from Star Trek. She thought that costume designer Michael Kaplan honored the old uniforms but gave them the spunk of today. The only problem with the dress is that it was short and she had to be careful not to flash anybody. (www.trekmovie.com)

Star Trek Fiction Star Trek: The New Adventures: The Shadow of the Creature By: Ensign Donald Arnold (THE FOLLOWING TAKES PLACE AFTER THE EVENTS OF THE LAST STORY WHICH WILL BE WRAPPED UP NEXT MONTH.) Bill was rather taken up with preparing for Halloween. He had holo-recordings of old Earth monster movies which were one of his Halloween traditions. Alexander said, “A hail, Captain.” He nodded and on the screen appeared a Vulcan who looked worried, unusually. He said, “Captain, we need your help. We are a planet called Justice. We are delegations from species throughout the galaxy. We understand you can handle an issue we are having with a dark evil.” Bill asked for nothing more than coordinates and the ship was there within the hour. The planet was grey and stormy. Bill energized with Stephanie, Spock, Bones, Data, and Alexander. Bill openly carried the staff. He sensed it might be of help. The Vulcan met them with two other delegates, human and Klingon, walking behind him. He told of a man who had been transformed into a monster with fangs, retractable, scaly wings, claws, limbs thick like trees, hair black as night, eyes with a red that pierced rubies, and powers that sounded frightful. All the Halloween excitement made this one of Bill’s favorite missions in a while given that he thought this planet belonged in a Halloween special. A full moon was rising and a howl pierced the city. Citizens rushed into their homes. Data was setting up trackers on roofs, Spock was setting up a force field perimeter, Bones was preparing a sedative as a backup, and Stephanie and Alexander guarded the council chambers. Bill got the Wielder’s Vulcan Robes which shined black under the full moon. He turned his eyes a glowing green to meet The Creature, the name of the monster. He flew up to the small roof of the well and lit there, carefully. A howl and strong feet beating against the ground was the entrance as a huge grey wolf with red eyes entered the city. He slowly rose off the four legs holding him up and took the form of a pale man in a black cloak. A gold medallion, a ring, and a staff with black gems adorning them shined evilly in the light. He said, with a hiss, “Greetings, Captain. Clearly you’ve come to face your end.” Bill laughed, responding, “You’re not as big and bad as I’ve heard.” The Creature scowled and long black claws came from his hands while scaly wings formed at his back and he shot back, “How about now, human?” Bill grinned and raised his hand, firing a ball of white fire that landed at the feet of The Creature. The Creature left the ground swooping through the air and hissing. Bill decided to be stereotypical and stood up on his staff, riding it like a surfboard. He blasted white fire at The Creature who deflected with a green flame. The Creature drew his arms out and created a green inferno in his hands. Bill held it at bay with one of white. Bill’s eyes got brighter, turning from green to white. Lightning began to strike rapidly, creating an orb, holding Bill as he pulled a great white bolt of lightning from his staff. He split it three ways, hitting the gems in the medallion, ring, and staff. The Creature began to turn human and fell from the sky. Bill caught him and arrested him to be questioned. MEANWHILE… The Federation President’s office was littered with files since the Sword of Kahless incident (to be resolved in the November issue). He found one that was nearly 10 years old entitled: The Planet Justice Incident. He remembered the scientist Jeremiah Livingston who vanished while doing research, shortly after finding an unusual mine and around the time “The Creature” appeared. He wondered if there was connection and told one of his men to put the file in the vault. Ambassador Spock suspected something already… (Donald Arnold is a member of the Hephaestus and has written many Star Trek fan fiction. Reviews The Flash (CW – Tuesday 7PM central) By MarkAdam Miller (Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article) Green Arrow has spun off The Flash. The new program started Oct. 7 on the CW. It had several elements from the comic the fans of The Flash will really like. They gave it a nice treatment and the costume also is a nice homage to the character with out it looking to out of place with its surroundings. The Flash also has a more up beat attitude against the Green Arrow that is dark because of the revenge angle that is at the back of its story. A nice aspect of the program is that John Wesley Shipp who was in The Flash TV series in the 1990’s is playing the father of this series Flash. Grant Gustin is reprising his role from Green Arrow as Barry Allen. Only other actor I notice was Danielle Panabaker who was in the movie Sky High. The set up for the program started on Green Arrow but you did not have to watch Green Arrow to get in to the program. There may be crossovers in the future that might make it hard if you like the Flash but don’t like the Green Arrow. This I believe should not make much of a problem as I think there are few who don’t like both programs. All in all it is a great start and looking forward to this program.

RATING: AAAAa The Hobbit: The Unexpected Journey By Donald Arnold (Spoiler Alert –B May be spoilers in the article)

RATING: AAAAa I loved it, don’t get me wrong. Story, characters, writing, direction, all good. However, I felt like they were trying too hard to make it: “Hey! This is how Lord of the Rings happened!” I mean one book should not take three movies, Peter Jackson. While I love the movies, stop trying so hard to link them. Gollum makes sense. Azog didn’t need that much background. Also, something I can’t help but point out after watching “Everything Wrong with The Hobbit” on YouTube, why do you hate handrails Peter Jackson? And physics? Half the falls you created would kill regular people! Middle Earth is a physics and hand rail free zone. Other than that, I loved it. (Did I miss something?
