HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our STARFLEET chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

From the Ready Room Greetings from your Captain, Let me first welcome some new members to the crew: Andrew Boyd, Matthew Boyd and Kendra Baxter. Matthew and Andrew are friends of Pete and Sue Ellen and Kendra is a friend of James. September was a good recruitment month for us. Also congratulations to Andrew and Matthew for completing OTS. This month we have the SciFi & Fantasy Festival at the Hoover Library. This is put on through a joint effort of the Hoover Library and Alabama Phoenix Festival. It will be October 21- 23, so I hope to see you there. Check out the Anvil for challenges and opportunities you can have writing articles for the Anvil. See you around the ship, Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller cohephaestus@bellsouth.net, www.facebook.com/groups/Hephaestus2004/

XO Briefing Hello crew, It’s that time of the year that is Halloween: to play dress up and go out and trick and treat. There are new shows out on TV: one is a reboot of MacGyver which is decent but not great like the original and Designated Survivor is going to be a great show to watch. If you need me, I’ll be with Section 31, Lt. Phillip Mangina, phillip3056@charter.net

Redshirts By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller In the original series of Star Trek, the supporting cast were normally put in red shirts. The Redshirt was anyone who was not in Command or Science sections of the starship. This included Engineering, Security and Communications. Normally the people that would die on an action show would not be the stars but the supporting cast, therefore, a large number of Redshirts seem to die. Though the chart below shows that other-color shirts did die, the majority were redshirts. But would this be the case if you actually served on a Starfleet vessel?

are more likely to be killed before Blueshirts but again you have to get through a lot of Redshirts to get to the Goldshirts. So being a Redshirt is a dangerous job. If you want a gold shirt, then you will need to suffer through wearing red. Maybe you will get lucky. Scotty was a red shirt and he did okay. (Yeah he died once, but he was brought back to life.) Others Thoughts: Red Shirts: How I stopped worrying and became comfortable with being expendable.

I believe this is realistic because if you look at who would most like likely to be killed they are the following:

The red shirt in TOS means Engineering, Support Services and Security. Sure Security is a dangerous job, but it does not have to be deadly. It seems that a lot of the Redshirts are careless in their attempt at security detail. There is a lot of stepping right in front of the enemy in clear view, unprotected. This looks like an amateur move almost comically, like Barney Fife. It gives me the impression that these men are new and not well trained. I think if they were better trained they would not be as easily killed in action.

1. Security. They are the ones who are in charge of protecting the ship from dangers so they are the ones who would be the first to be killed in a fight. They also wear red shirts. 2. Landing party. Again the landing party would take security with them to protect what the landing party is doing and again fall into being the first to die.

– Matt Boyd, Ensign

3. Engineers. These people are around what drives the ship. So they might die either from radiation from the engines or from the engines being attacked by hostile forces. Again members that are in red shirts. As to the other colors, blue is Science and Medical. They would not often be in the line of fire so are more likely to live. If they die it is because they run out of Redshirts to protect them or they picked up a poison while studying plants or wild life. Since they have tricorders the odds of them picking it up not knowing it is dangerous is slim. The gold shirts are Command and they are the ones ordering the Redshirts into danger. NCC-2004

While on an Away Mission By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller We were headed back to the Region 2 Starbase to check in and give finale reports on the Klingon/ Romulan incident. The subspace transmission from Fleet Captain Richard Childers, my zone coordinator, stated that Commodore Ryan Case, area coordinator for Region 2, was not too happy that we turned the Founder over to the Romulans but, Richard had calmed him down. My report sort of threw Amb. Mike under the shuttlecraft by saying it was his idea. I think I am safe because Mike says he doesn’t read standard reports. He just reads ones that deal with his job. He mostly reads the latest strategies on how to win at poker, which he believes gives him the best insights on how to be a great ambassador. I don’t know since I am just a simple engineer in charge of a research starship and count on one hand the number of times I beat Mike at poker. Okay, two hands, but I wouldn’t have to use my thumbs.

Snaggletooth was a dragon from the planet Taggaroon. They had several animals that seemed to come out of earth’s mythology. I had done some survey work on the planet and Snaggletooth’s mother had been killed by Tricera-Rex, an animal that looked like a cross between a T-Rex and a triceratops. I rescued Snaggletooth and in doing so she bonded with me. Since she had bonded to me Federation let me keep her. I named her Snaggletooth as her fangs are not the same length. Tara wants one but the Federation controls the taking of the dragons as they are becoming an endangered species. Also the ship’s counselor, Sue Ellen (her mother), is not keen on the idea of having a dragon in their family cabin. It didn’t take long for Snaggletooth to tire and fly up to her nest on top of my wardrobe cabinet. Dragons are good pets. They sleep longer than cats so don’t need as much attention. The only troublesome thing is the occasional fire breath, but as long as you don’t feed them the food that produces flammable gas then they can’t produce a strong flame.

Once we dropped off the Romulans and the Founders at the neutral zone, I turned the bridge over to the 1st Officer, Phillip. He then turned it over to the cadets and ensigns to give them bridge training. As the turbo lift doors were closing I heard him turn the command over to Ensign 1st Class Donald Arnold. I grimaced. Donald is a good officer but he still ends up scraping the side of the ship when he docks her. Luckily we should change shifts before we get back to Region 2 Starbase.

I pulled up the options for our next assignment. On top of the list was a new engine configuration that Fleet Captain Richards wants me to do. I think he more wants me to try it out since the Deja Thoris is up for an engine refit and he wants to know if it is a good fit for his ship. I am going to pass on that as we just did some refitting and I don’t think this design would work with our old ship. I think Bryan Teske, his Chief of Operations can convince him it is a good idea that I pass on it. Bryan and I know each other from the Breen skirmish during the Dominion War so I think he will help me out. The other 2 possibilities are setting up archology studies on a couple of new Federation planets. This is right up Brigadier Roy Green’s alley so I’ll have to see which one he wants to start. He probably wants to do both but I don’t want the ship tied up that long. Also, Commodore Case wouldn’t want us tied up that long either.

I went to my cabin and as soon as I sat down my pet dragon, Snaggletooth, flew off the shelf where she was lying and landed on my shoulder. She started nipping at my ear, wanting her treats. I knew she would be rambunctious because I had been busy with the Klingons. If I am too busy, Cadet Tara takes care of Snaggletooth. With the Klingon business at hand, Tara was confined to quarters so Snaggletooth was up for some play since she had’nt gotten any for a few days. I started to play with her and throw treats in the air for her to snatch which helped her stretch her wings. USS Hephaestus

Reviews Movies Dwarvenaut Review by Ensign Matt Boyd If you are a fan of Dungeons and Dragons or a fan of stories about fans, you may like this documentary about Stefan Pokorny the owner and creator of Dwarven Forge. Stefan is a lifelong Medieval Fantasy fan, Dungeon and Dragons player and Artist. In 2011 he was almost going out of business so he started a Kickstarter to save his company. Being a Dungeon Master he wanted to make his “world”, the game he runs, Valoria. He made a new type of miniature, one that can be changed to the individual’s own personal needs. He used this as the selling point in his Kickstarter. He needs to reach one million to save his company and so begins a countdown. Stefan tells us of his past as he travels out of the country and gathers inspiration for his miniatures that his company makes. He starts and ends this documentary by standing behind his Dwarven Forge booth at GaryCon interacting with customers and peers. Will he make it, will he save his company? Fan Films The Greater Good, Potemkin Pictures, https://youtu.be/9Yy___FxJrE Reviewed by FCapt. MarkAdam Miller Potemkin Pictures is a local Star Trek Fan film production company based here in Pelham, AL. The Greater Good is thier latest project. Its connection to the Hephaestus: our own Ensign 1st Class Donald Arnold is the writer and an actor in the production. The plot revolves around a discussion between a father and son. The father and son are Halkan, a race that was in TOS: Mirror, Mirror. Ens. Arnold has done a good job in exploring the Halkan’s from that episode and developed an interesting script using that background. The Halkan’s were minor characters in that episode so it is interesting to see Ens. Arnold’s take on how the Halkan’s are still dealing with the Federation. The fan film is short since they can’t go into big productions like studios do. Also they are restricted by some rules by CBS/Paramount. On the whole the piece does not look cheap like fan films sometimes do. This may be due in part because this is not Potemkin Pictures’ first time filming. The line delivery is good but needed to have a little more emotion involved. It will be interesting to see what else Ens. Arnold has up his sleeve that Potemkin Pictures might make in to a film or possibly see on CBS/Paramount Star Trek Discovery. Use the link above to see the film on youtube. I don’t think you will be disappointed. Rate: AAAAa

Attractions Frozen Ever After - Epcot World Show Case, Disney World, Orlando, FL Review by FCapt MarkAdam Miller Most people know that I am a Disney Fan. I have many collections that are Disney themed. My wife and I have gone to Disney World on a regular basis since we first honeymooned there 24 years ago. While we were down there this past month we went to the new ride that is based on the movie Frozen. Frozen Ever After is in the Norway pavilion taking over the former Maelstrom ride. We knew we would have to wait as Frozen is very popular and the Fastpass tickets were all booked. When we entered the ride the wait time was 75 minutes. I kept an eye on the time to see how accurate that was and found that we had to wait 90 minutes. The Disney app did show that Disney had changed the wait time from 75 minutes to 105. The ride itself was not very long. I did not time it but it was less than 5 minutes. The theme was a celebration of when Anna saved Elsa and Arendelle. You travel through 6 scenes with a lot of dark places in between. There are snippets of Let It Go and For The First Time In Forever. There might have been other songs but they were so short that I did not pick up on them. The whole ride was very poor. It looked like they were trying to make a ride of the movie and found that they did not have a long enough ride to do that so they switch to the theme they have. I think that by using the Maelstrom ride they were also constrained by the path the boat could take. Personally I would have picked one or two songs from the movie and do the scenes to illustrate those songs. This ride is a disappointment from the Imagineers. This is the first time that it looked like Disney slapped something together for money instead of entertainment. If you love Frozen you will like the ride. If you just like the movie, then skip this ride and the long wait. There are better things to do at Epcot like Soarin’, Test Track, and Misson: Space. Rate: Aaaaa PS: If you want to see the scene just google Frozen Ever After and you will get the main jest of the ride from the online images.

I am still learning. – Michelangelo

Never Forget… Jim "Hagan" Beggs – September 16, 2016 (age 79) Star Trek fans will know him as Lt. Hansen from TOS: Court Martial and TOS: The Menagerie, Pts 1&2. He died on September 16, 2016 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Most people will remember him as Dr. George Dunbar on the TV series Danger Bay. Bruce Dolan – October 7, 2016 (age 53) I met Bruce Dolan at a Region 2 Summit many years ago. He was truly the definition of Star Trek IDIC (Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combination). Bruce knew how to accept everyone into Region 2, STARFLEET and Star Trek. If you met him, you might not become a Trekkie but you would have an appreciation for the show and what it does for people. STARFLEET may have lost a leader but we still have his example to live by. My friend Bruce lost his battle to cancer. Best wishes Bruce in the next Great Adventure. I always felt accepted by Bruce.

Ship’s Log September 8, 2016 – Star Trek 50th Anniversary

fact that might actually be an embellishment by a writer of the time to make a historical point. This episode is a good lead into a lot of different discussions.

Since it was during the week only a few crewmen could show up to celebrate the 50th Anniversary. The four of us, Myself, Brenda Miller, Phillip Mangina and Michael Burtyk had dinner at the local Makarios restaurant. They make Shwarma that was mentioned in the first Avenger’s movie that the four of us enjoy. We covered all the topics on Star Trek. We had an enjoyable time. Couldn’t ask for a better night.

Attendance: 6 people. Captain’s Personal Log September 25-30, 2016 – Walt Disney World Trip The 2nd Officer, Brenda Miller, and I traveled to Orlando, FL, to celebrate our 24the Anniversary. Sunday we stop in Tallahassee, FL, to make the trip easier. We ate at a Railroad theme restaurant, Midtown Caboose, that Sheldon would have loved. We had dinner at Sleuth’s Mystery Dinner Theater on Monday. We visited Magic Kingdom (Tuesday), Disney Hollywood Studios (Wednesday) and Epcot (Thursday). We ate at a special place each of those days - Liberty Tree Tavern, Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano and Rose & Crown Pub respectively. Recommend the following rides: Soarin’ (Epcot), Seven Dwarf’s Mine Train (Magic Kingdom), Mission: Space (Epcot) and Star Tours Ride (Disney Hollywood Studios).

Attendance: 4 people September 10, 2016 – Social We had a great turn out for the social this month. The whole Davis family was able to attend. We also had a new guest with possible recruitment, Andi Boyd. Welcome Andi. The Davis’ learned the Hephaestus’ favorite card game, The Great Dalmuti. Gabby came out strong in the beginning but I came up from behind when I was able to get the Great Dalmuti position and keep it with 3 lay down hands for the win in the end. We also watched the new show with William Shatner – Better Late Than Never. Snacks and drinks were available. Also some chicken wings for a small donation. Attendance: 15 people September 22, 2016 – Exploring Trek The discussion this month was on VOY: Living Witness. This was an interesting discussion because the episode really does not have the characters in their actual roles but interpretations of what their characters are. This episode brought up the point of how do we really interrupt our own history. We discussed some of the ideas we take as

Exploring Trek The September Exploring Trek discussed VOY: Living Witness. I took a different approach in the discussion by discussing the story line first instead of the characters. Part of the reason was that the main characters where not really in the episodes. They were holograms programed by Quarren, the museum curator, and later the Doctor, of what they believed the crew were like. The topic for the majority of the discussion was about how we interpret our history and what we know as facts and how we interpret those facts. Many examples of our own history were discussed. The follow-up questions to work on your own were: 1.

How does VOY: Living Witness compare with TOS: Let This Be Your Last Battle Field?

2.

How does VOY: Living Witness compare with TNG: Too Short of Season?

3.

How does VOY: Living Witness compare with DS9: Battle Lines?

The next Exploring Trek is October 27, 2016. We will be discussing DS9: In The Pale Moonlight. We also will discuss if we want to have a end-of-year meal and what we want to discuss in 2017. If you are not there you are missing out on some serious Trek discussions. If there is an episode or topic you would like to explore please email me with your suggestions. You can email me your thoughts on these questions at cohephaestus@bellsouth.net. Thank you to Kingdom Comics and Albert Marsh for letting us use their Store.

STARFLEET Academy This month we saw three people take advantage of the Academy. Our newest recruits, Matthew Boyd and Andrew Boyd, both took OTS (Officer Training School) and passed with flying colors. After they passed I promoted them to officers so don’t forget to say Hi to our newest ensigns. Donald Arnold our star Academy grad took a course in Shakespeare characters. He did well on this so if you need some information on characters in Shakespeare then Donald will be able to answer them. If you are interested in STARFLEET Academy all you have to do is head over to www.acad.sfi.org , look at the course catalog to find something you are interested in and then send an email to the instructor to get the course. Most of the courses you can find the information on line. If you need other material, then the course will tell you what books you need or will come with a PDF that you will need to download to take the course. Anvil Challenge I guess September’s challenge was too hard since I didn’t get anyone answers. If you think you have to get everyone right, you don’t. You just need to get more right then the next crewman. This was similar to last time but Name the Character is only 4 things per picture this time: 1. Name the Character. (pg. 5) – Making this one a little tougher. You need to name the character, the episode they are in, the actor playing the character and what part the actor is better known for. 4 points for each picture making for a total of 40 points 2. Hunt for the Icon (pg. 16) – there are five icons to find. A point for page number and a point for description were the icon is on the page for a total of 10 points 3. Do you know this Alien? (pg. 14) – 1 point for each of the following: Alien name, species, actor name, series, and episode the alien is from for a total of 5 points The person who gets the most points will win a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card. In cases of a tie the first person to get it in will win. Judges Decision are final (i.e. whoever Brenda decides is the winner). Email your answers to cohephaestus@bellsouth.net or IM me on Facebook at MarkAdam Miller. Good luck!

Feedback Appreciated all the tie ins you did with Birmingham & Star Trek. A novel I read was placed in the Birmingham area. It talked about the Vulcan statue, actually made fun of it because its back side is bare, as in without clothes. Is that true? Vulcan “moons” the people on that side of town. Embarrassing for the older, genteel ladies. – Gail O’Kane (Aunt of CO) Good paper with lots of feedback for 50th. Is there a hint for Christmas for the Rodenberry film clips??? – John Miller (father of CO)
