HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our STARFLEET chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

From the Ready Room Greetings from your Captain, Sorry for the lateness of this newsletter. I caught a cold that would not let up and my wife and I went to Disney World to celebrate our anniversary. This made it hard to write. The year is coming to a close and we need to decide what we want to do next year. We have two opportunities next year to promote the Hephaestus at conventions. Magic City Con and Hoover Library Sci-Fi/ Fantasy Festival. Magic City Con falls on our June social so that would be a good opurtunity to premote the Hephaestus. I also need ideas on what subjects to cover in the Anvil. We still have several species to discuss and several ship departments. Send your ideas to my email or post them on the Facebook page. The Romulan article was stolen by the Tal Shiar and we are in the process of recovering it. We should have it sometime next year.
As always, Live Long and Prosper and see you around the ship, Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller cohephaestus@bellsouth.net, www.facebook.com/groups/Hephaestus2004/
XO Briefing Greetings, It is time to do a Vote Of Confidence for the Captain. You can email me at phillip3056@charter.net with a yes or no. Please put Vote of Confendence in the Subject line Halloween is coming soon and I’m not sure what I am dressing as. What are you dressing up as? Star Trek Discovery has gotten better and I am liking it so far. What are your thoughts on it? For Exploring Trek for the month of November we need to decide on where to eat and talk about next year’s discussion topics. If y’all have any ideas on crew activities let us know. Some examples are going to the zoo or going to Atlanta to the Coca Cola place.
If you need me, I’ll be with Section 31, Lt. Commander Phillip Mangina, phillip3056@charter.netv USS Hephaestus

Turning to Ensign Matt at communications, “Matt turn that alarm off! Mr Mangina Report!”
Ship is settling in to a new routine now that we are done with the Amanda Grayson problem. We are in orbit around Bajor. Our assignment is to be on hand for protection of Deep Space Nine. After the Dominion War, there have been Cardassian Pirates raiding near by systems for material to survive. Cardassia is still not on it feet from the devastation that the Dominion did on their planets. Several Cardassian military ships have taken to piracy because of that. We also are trying to work out glithces in the TR-590 Tricorder XI. They started out find but after a year they start giving wrong readings. STARFLEET has asked us to find out what the problem is or if they have to be completely redesigned. If Admiral Potts has his way, he will have a new design and model to replace the TR-590 Tricorder XI. I am surprised he wants to redesign it. Admiral Potts has a collection of antique tricorders that he uses when he thinks no one is looking.
Matt gulped, “Sorry, Sir. That is the problem, we can’t get it to turn off.” Phillip looked up and motioned me over. “The computer went in to automatic diagnostic mode and it is turning everything on and off. We can’t shut it down and we can’t get a hold of Admiral Potts to find out what’s happening with the main computer.” Just as Phillip finished, everything shut off and the bridge went dark. Emergency lighting came on but everything else was dead. I hit my combadge but nothing happen. Phillip hit his as well with same results. Matt looked up from his station where his commbadge was disassembled, “The computer deactivated the commbadges. They will need to be reprogramed.” I rubbed my temples. “ Phillip, find Danny and see if he knows what happen to the computer. Matt and Andi, go to ship stores and get hand held communicators and distribute them to key personnel with me and Phillip getting the first. Tell section heads to meet in the briefing room in 30 minutes. Donald, go to the shuttle bay and see if the shuttles were affected and if not, get Deep Space Nine on the horn. Have them get a runabout out here to tow us to the station.
I clicked off the recording device and looked at my new ready room. I have an office in my cabin which is 5 decks down which STARFLEET feels is too far away. When I went on holiday, STARFLEET ordered my 1st Officer to make a ready room for me so that I can be near the bridge. They couldn’t put it on the bridge level so they took over a lab that was near a turbo lift on the second deck and made it into a ready room. The secondary turbo lift to the bridge is now my personal turbo lift. Sometimes I think the brass at STARFLEET don’t have enough to do. I headed out the door as the Red alert siren went off. I raced to the turbo lift and went to the bridge.
Old ships and their problems.
On the bridge, everyone was either frantically working at their stations or looking to the science station for explanation. The 1st Office, Phillip, was leaning over Ensign Andi as he went through pushing various buttons on the station.

Exploring Trek The September meeting of Exploring Trek was on TNG episode Parallels. We discussed how the characters were different in each reality; how this affected Worf’s character in later episodes; and talked about changes in different props that popped up including the comm badges that were from another episode, TNG: Future Imperfect. In conclusion we speculated how long it would take us to realize we were in a different reality. Exploring Trek on your own: 1. Compare Parallels to TOS: Mirror, Mirror 2. Compare Parallels to Ent: In a Mirror Darkly
Exploring Trek for the rest of the year: October 26, 2017 - Star Trek: Discovery Check your calendars to help set up an Exploring Trek Dinner in November or December to celebrate the year. Hephaestus Redshirt Challenge Sorry that I haven’t posted on the site in a while. Just been busy at work. I am going to start posting dates and times to meet and walk and talk. If you have any questions let me know. – Lt. Phillip Mangina Jr. (1st Officer), Director, Hephaestus Red Shirt Challenge I found a new way to exercise. Go to Disney World. On average Brenda and I walked 6 miles a day. One day we took a 4- hours tour and walked almost ten miles. The only problem is that there are a lot of nice places to choose from to eat a good meal. Think we broke even on food to exercise ratio. Keep an eye on the website for updates: https://www.facebook.com/Red.Shirt.Challenge/. – Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller, Trying to lose weight. Star Trek News & More Doctor Who News – By Ensign Matt Boyd Hello Whovians! We are fans, we like these shows and the actors who play our favorite characters. We like to know what those actors are doing next. Since Peter Capaldi is leaving the show, you may want to see what he has coming up. Our dear Doctor will be in Paddington Bear 2 playing Mr. Curry. Paddington Bear 2 is a nice family film that can be enjoyed by everyone. Harriet Jones is alive! If you have forgotten who Harriet Jones is then let me refresh your memory. Harriet was a Prime Minister in the show during the 10th Doctor’s run. We are meant to believe she has met her end at the hands of the Daleks at the end of the Episode “The Journey’s End.” According to a poem in a book of poetry written by James Goss and illustrated by Russel T. Davies titled Now We Are Six Hundred she did survive the attack. Russel T. Davies, in an interview, had confirmed it. Fans of that character can now rest easy. David Bradley will be playing the first Doctor in a new series of radio plays. The first two episodes will be available this December starting with The Destination Wars by Matt Fitton. The second episode titled the Great White Hurricane by Guy Adams. The other two episodes will be available July 2018: The Invention of Death by John Dorney and The Barbarians and the Samurai by Andrew Smith. The adventures are available for preorder now from Big Finish. Just go to www.bigfinish.com.
NASA News – By Curtis Salors (passenger) NASA's Juno is a spacecraft that truly fulfills the mission to "boldly go where no one has gone before”; its SEVEN-year mission… established to explore a strange new world: Jupiter. Five of these seven years would be spent entirely in transit. The first two of those five transit-years would be spent in elliptical orbit before heading for destination Jupiter. Why the intentional slow start? As many worthwhile things do, Juno's journey would begin with waiting. Juno would wait for a gravitational slingshot maneuver from Earth. This procedure is better known as "gravity assist". It involves using principals of orbital mechanics and the gravity of a planet to "sling" a spacecraft into greater speeds. Apparently, it's well worth the two-year wait for two reasons: One, NASA's team used this time to test Juno's sophisticated, onboard instruments before using them in the Jovian system around Jupiter; Two, the slingshot-like maneuver would increase Juno's speed by 8,800 mph. This is a significant speed increase for any spacecraft; especially one that must travel almost 2 billion miles, exclusively on solar power. After the gravity assist, Juno spent three years in transit to Jupiter; during which time Juno sent status updates back to Earth. (Even spaceships like social media?) As she drew closer to Jupiter, the gravitational pull of Jupiter (much greater than Earth's) accelerated Juno's speed to around 13,000 mph; after which time she took up orbit around Jupiter's north pole and traveled to and from her south pole multiple times gathering data. How much data? Plenty. One bunch took Earthlings five days to download. Juno's name, derived from Greek and Roman mythology, is appropriate. The god, Jupiter, attempting to hide his mischief from spectators, covered himself with thick clouds. Nonetheless, the goddess Juno (his wife) was able to peer through these thick clouds to see Jupiter's true nature. USS Hephaestus

Lockheed Martin who built Juno for NASA; and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Canada Flintridge, CA, manages the Juno Mission which is now in the final days of its 2-year science phase, the science phase was preceded by the aforementioned 5-year cruise. The Mission is part of the New Frontiers program headed up in Huntsville, AL at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. One of the most anticipated bits of information Juno has produced is close-up visuals of the centuries-old, hurricane-like storm on Jupiter which Earthlings have dubbed The Great Red Spot. The Storm (thought to be at least 350 yrs. old) is no doubt part of Jupiter's celestial beauty and artist's renderings of it can be found on NASA's website. Juno's Mission was initially planned to end in FEB 2018, but discussions about further funding are taking place and the Mission may continue until JUL 2018. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_assist https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Frontiers_program https://www.missionjuno.swriedu/spacecraft/ https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/a-whole-new-jupiter-first-science-results-from-nasa-s-juno-mission https://www.missionjuno.swri.edu/#/mission https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/juno/overview/index.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_Deep_Space_Network https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juno_(spacecraft) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jet_Propulsion_Laboratory https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Red_Spot http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/385400.html (know of a sighting of a Star? Never Forget… Bernie Casey – September 19, 2017(age 78) Mr. Casey is known to Star Trek fans as Commander Calvin Hudson, a marquis in the two-part episode The Maquis (S2E20&21). Star Trek Deep Space Nine is not the only Sci-Fi Mr. Casey was in. He also was in Time Trax (Ernest Cooper), Babylon 5 (Derek Cranston), SeaQuest 2032 (Admiral Vanalden), and the Martian Chronicles (Major Jeff Spender). Before becoming an actor, he was a track and field champion and a professional football player. (Did I miss a news item or news item that might be of interest to your fellow crew members? Ship’s Log September 9, 2017 – September Social
September 16, 2017 – Ship’s monthly Poker Game We had the monthly Poker Game at Pete’s House. The game went well with several very interesting hands. MarkAdam, the CO, was the winner with Brenda, 2nd Officer, coming in second. Snacks and drink were available.
The September Social was a great success. We had a good turnout. We started the social with a short business meeting to let everyone know what went on at IC. We also discussed upcoming socials. The Potts brought a new game to play that was fun. We also watched Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Snacks and drinks were available. Several ongoing discussions covered a wide range of subjects.

Attendance: 20 people
Due to illness the Premier party was canceled
September 10, 2017 – Star Trek: Wrath of Kahn
Attendance: 0 people
A local movie theater was showing the director’s cut of Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn. The showing included an interview with William Shatner. It was nice to see Khan on the big screen again. Although it was a small audience we were able to connect with several people to interest them in joining the ship.
September 28, 2017 – Exploring Trek We had a good turnout for the Exploring Trek Discussion. We discussed TNG: Parallels. We had the return of two people who were interested in the discussion group but previously could not attend because of job commitments. We also had a new STARFLEET member, Trey Petty. Trey has been with us a couple of times but tonight was his first night as a member of STARFLEET. Trey also volunteered to help with the live feed of future discussions. The night’s discussion was recorded but was not a live feed because of problems with Facebook. Hopefully next time we will be able to do it from YouTube. Snacks and drinks were available.
Side note: The previews showed an upcoming event of George Takei’s Allegiance on Broadway. They film the actual play and then show it in theaters. We will have to see if it is possible to get a group together to go. www.fathomevents.com/events/allegiance-onbroadway-2017 Attendance: 4 members
Attendance: 9 people

STARFLEET Academy STARFLEET Academy has changed its address: http://main.sfiacademy.org/ STARFLEET Academy is not only a place to learn about different subjects but also a place to get recognition throughout the fleet for academic accomplishments. One point of recognition is the Boothby award. This is given out for every 50 course you finish in the Academy. Currently Brenda Miller and James Davis each have a Bronze Boothby and Donald Arnold has four Boothby’s (Bronze, Silver, Gold & Latinum). Another award is Red, Blue and Gold Squadron which is given to the best student in each college each year. Red Squadron is for those 18 years or older that excel in a college. Blue is for those under 18 and Gold is for a family that has excelled in a college. This year Brenda Miller received Red squadron for excellence in the College of Animal Trivia and Miller family receive Gold Squadron for excellence in the College of Parallel Studies. In the past Donald Arnold has won Blue squadron in both 2015 and 2016. There is a top award for Squadron and that is Squadron Leader. Donald Arnold won the Blue Squadron Leader award in 2015. Accordingly, you can be recognized for your work in STARFLEET Academy. So, look up a college and go learn things. Then you too can have Boothby and Squadron awards. Live Long and Prosper
