HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

F r o m t h e R ea d y R o o m Greeting from your Captain, Star Trek is 48 years old this month. It is hard to believe that it has been going on that long. This month holds a special meaning in that my brother said I would never remember my niece’s birthday unless she was born on a Star Trek Date. My first niece was born on September 8th, 1986. Happy Birthday to Abigail. Another special day this month for me is my wife’s Birthday which is September 16 (no you don’t need to know the year). We will be married 22 years this coming October. Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary to Brenda. Check out the Hunt for the Icon article to see if you found all the Icons in last month’s issue. Do you have an interesting idea for the Anvil? Do you have a theme that you might want us to explore? Do you have an article, news story or fictional story that you would like to share? Then send you idea and stories to the email address below. Star Trek Fiction Star Trek: The New Adventures: “Diplomatic Negotiations”

By: Donald Arnold Bill took his call to Qo’nos with as much seriousness as possible and when he arrived, found a full scale war over Qo’nos. He used his powers to simply disable all the ships where their weapons didn’t work. He then hailed all ships and said, “You know who I am. You know why I’m here. Your weapons will be back online once everything’s straightened out. I’ll have the leaders of each of the factions in the Conference Room on my ship in 30 Earth minutes so make your arrangements now. I’m a peaceful man, but the Klingons are friends of mine and that’s got a certain meaning to me. It means, if they need my help, I’m here. Okay, begin your arrangements. Kirk out.” First he looked around the bridge. He said, “Wynonna Uhura, Spock III, Leah McCoy, and Alexander will be in the Conference Room for discussions. Wynonna, Alexander, you two are my translators. Spock, get your grandfather here ASAP, please. Leah, if anything goes wrong, we’re going to need our Doctor. Data B4 Soong, you and Jinaru H. Sulu, will be standing on each side of the door. I’ll have security guarding the computers, so if someone tries to take my bridge, I’ll know. Get to those posts. Spock, once you’re done, you’re in the Conference Room with us. Jack B. Crusher, get your dad to call on the fleet. We’ll need Captain Crusher and the rest of the fleet if this goes wrong because we will be at war.” Half an hour later, Gul Dukan, The Andorian High Commander, Shrun, and Chancellor Martok were there with Ambassador Spock and the posted bridge crew. Bill spoke first. He said, “I want to welcome you all. Now, Andoria, Cardassia had no reason to attack you and that will be addressed but right now, even if you did find it floating in space, that Sword isn’t yours. You’re not keeping it. It’s just not happening.” Dukan became enraged raising his voice as he said, “You are merely attacking Cardassia with accusation!” It took four hours to complete these negotiations. It took an hour after they sedated Gul Dukan. Nonetheless, Martok decided he wouldn’t keep the Sword of Kahless on Qo’nos. To end the present adventure, Bill was asked to guard it. He had just made a handful of Cardassian enemies but he didn’t mind. He was protecting something that Cardassia had no right to have. Or did they? THE END…? Don’t forget to check out my next story in the Anvil. We will discover things we didn’t know about Cardassia, the Klingons, and some long forgotten alliances. Surak and Kahless? The staff’s connection? Do the Cardassians have a right to the Sword of Kahless? Find out all this and more in my next story entitled: “Who’s Right Is It Anyway?”

Star Trek News Wil Wheaton Project cancelled Those who were a fan of the Wil Wheaton Project on SyFy I am sorry to say that it has been not renew for the next season. Sighting low rating the executives of the SyFy channel felt that the ratings did not give reason to another season. Reviews Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Blu-Ray) By MarkAdam Miller } (Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article) I picked up the Blu-Ray of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It is the first season of the show. You can read my review of the show in the October 2013 edition of the Anvil. The format for the Blu-Ray is done very well. Three of the episodes have commentaries. Each commentary is with the writer of the episode and 2 of the actors. The best was the one with Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson) and Chloe Bennet (Skye). There is also the special feature about making the Marvel movies and the TV show which is a very good overview of the tie-in between the movies and the TV show. They have a blooper real and several deleted scenes. The set includes behind the scenes look at the sets and the visual effects. There also is a feature on the San Diego Comic-Con If you haven’t seen the show it is a good way to see it before the new season starts. I have liked the show and think people who didn’t were bored by the set up they were trying to do in the first several episodes. Once the show went through the set up, it really got going. Its tie in with Thor: The Dark World and Captain America Winter Solider also made it move along at a pretty good clip. I highly recommend the show and the Blu-Ray experience just makes it that much better. A nice feature of the Blu-Ray is if more than one person is watching the series you can make a tag that you can personalize that keeps track of what episode you are on. So person A can be on episode 3 half way through and person B could be on starting episode 9. Then person A can pull up their tag and it will tell them which disk to put in and once the right disk is in then it will start the program where they left off. This is really good. Only thing I did not like about the set is the deleted scenes are all together in one section. I have been watching The TV series Blue Bloods on DVD and the deleted scenes are with the episode they corresponds too. This makes it nice to watch the deleted scenes right after watching the episode. The deleted scenes do say what episode they are from but you would have to flip between disks if you wanted to see the deletes scene and how it went with its episode.

RATING: AAAAa The Godfather (Throwback Review) By Donald Arnold (Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article)

RATING: AAAAA I recently saw the first installment in the trilogy, The Godfather. It was amazing. It was uncut. It was action packed and enough to make you jump off the edge of your seat and put you the edge of the seat if you weren’t already there. There were moments of triumph, moments of intensity, terror, excitement, and of course, vengeance. It was a great movie. If you ever get an offer to see it, I have to say it is an offer you cannot refuse.
