HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our STARFLEET chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

From the Ready Room Greeting from your Captain, First of all, I want to thank all of you that sent in your thoughts on Star Trek’s 50th Anniversary. I think you will enjoy the thoughts of your fellow crew members on what they think about Star Trek. We are coming close to the end of the year and we need to think what we want in The Anvil next year. Please send me your thoughts on what articles you would like to see or what topics you would like to see covered. If you have an idea for an article you would like to write, then send me that as well and when you would like it to run in The Anvil. We have 12 months to fill up so everything is on the table. Take a look at next year’s schedule of events (pg. 20) If you have an idea for what we can do on those days then please let me know. The group is open to most anything. I am always looking for people to give reviews of movies, books and conventions. Please let your fellow crewmates know what you have seen or read so they might know what to go, see, or pick up at the local bookstore. I am still looking for someone to take over writing up the convention and possible events in the area. I am still learning about the Birmingham area and would like someone who may know it better to take over that section. To see what it entails look on pages 22-24 to see what I have done. If you think there is a better way of doing, then let me know and we can try it out. See you around the ship, Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller cohephaestus@bellsouth.net, www.facebook.com/groups/Hephaestus2004/
XO Briefing Hello crew, Finally got finished reading The Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and watched the movie. Thoughts on 50th Anniversary of Star Trek By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller On September 8th, 1966 a bold new adventure was started called Star Trek. This new show was to be a Wagon Train to the stars. The program did not exceed as well as the network wanted it. After 3 seasons and three letter writing campaigns to save the show, it was cancelled. That was not the end of it. It began running in syndication and from there the program spawned five spin off shows, 13 movies, numerous books, comics, collectables and fan clubs. The show still has an upcoming series that will be on the web and a fourteenth movie in the works. What has made this program continue to thrive?
Admiral Pete Mohney: When I was a kid, my dad would bring home Krystal burgers on Star Trek night and the whole family would watch TV and have dinner together. This was the only show we ever watched together, and I will always remember those evenings. Commodore Ryan Case, Region 2 Coordinator: The only thing I can think to say about the 50th anniversary of Star Trek is a direct quote I heard from Brent Spiner during a panel: "Star Trek is 7th Birthday, 1992 the great American Epic. There's no end in sight and there never will be. And it's really cool to be a part of that big epic."
Many people would have different answers for this question. The following pages shows what Star Trek means to the crew of the Hephaestus and STARFLEET personal. Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller: My personal reason for Star Trek thriving is that it shows Hope. The reason for this is that at the root of Star Trek is the idea of everybody getting along in the future. 8th Birthday, 1972 For everyone to get along then we all need to except each other as who we are. Star Trek, by it premise, accepted everyone. I don’t think Gene Roddenberry and the other writers realized when they first set out to create Star Trek that it would speak to so many people. This program unknowingly spoke to many that there has to be a way to get along. The only way we are going to do that is if we work together. Star Trek became a topic for those who might not have other things in common and it gave hope that at some point we are going to get along and we will be able to explore the outer reaches of space.
I have had Star Trek as part of my entire life. Some of my earliest memories are of sitting on the floor watching Next Generation episodes with my dad. I remember getting REALLY into DS9 as I grew older. Hearing the opening theme of every show has a calming effect on me to this day and I sincerely look forward to another 50 years of 'boldly going'. Lt JG Sandra Hosley: My brother, Charles, and I would watch TOS together every week. Mr. Spock, with his cool and logical persona, was our idol and we doted on his every word and movement. The series affirmed our belief that it was okay to be different and still be respected and valued. It also gave hope to the idea that, somewhere in the future, mankind would be victorious over the senseless problems and conflicts that beset us at present. I think that, if he was alive today, he would be enjoying this 50th anniversary celebration with lots of fond memories. Denise Balzer: The memory of the show always brings back good memories of a time of kitsch costumes, strong men, sexy women, friendship and a strong sense of values. All things I enjoy!
Fleet Captain Richard Childers, Zone Coordinator: For 50 years the crews of Star Trek have been there to be our guides, friends and inspiration. Looking forward to the next 50 years of adventures! USS Hephaestus

Carly Strickland: My first year of college wasn’t the experience it was supposed to be. It was full of fear and anxiety caused by the loss of my crucial routine I had meticulously constructed, altered seldom, and required to function properly. This, coupled with the end of an emotionally abusive relationship that left me with no self-esteem and a deep depression guaranteed leaving the house meant panic and pain and made making friends was awkward and frightening. It was also the year I discovered Star Trek.
42, every Friday they would receive the episode they would air that weekend, it was his job to get it ready to air. I would go up there on his lunch hour and we would watch the episode. The other memory was that same year, when Star Trek: TMP came out. Me and several friends went to the theater to see it, I remember being so excited by it. Even now when I look back and realize how flawed that first film was, at the time I was not disappointed one bit. I had spent years watching those same 79 episodes over and over and any new Trek was pretty exciting. Ensign 1st Class Donald Arnold: In the year 2012, for the first time, I watched Star Trek: Generations. I had no idea who any of the characters were. The VHS cover was shiny so I picked it up. I had no idea what I would watch would change my life. That summer I went to my first convention in my makeshift Doctor Leonard H. McCoy costume. The next year, Star Trek: Into Darkness came out and by getting a free ticket to see it early unbeknownst to me I met Captain MarkAdam Miller. The night my friend and I went to the premiere is when I realized who the Captain was for the very first time, properly introduced to me by Neil Yawn. I was recruited into the USS Hephaestus that day. Since then, I have risen to the rank of Ensign 1st Class, earned several awards from STARFLEET Academy, and made some of the best friends I could ever ask for who I consider another branch of my family. Happy 50th Anniversary, Star Trek. Live long and prosper.
The Original Series comforted me in ways I can’t even explain. The predictable structure of every episode was comforting. The hopeful message of Gene Rodenberry’s vision of humanity’s future gave me hope for mine. Kirk, Spock, and Bones didn’t require me to be witty or entertaining or to be able to have a conversation without stuttering. They didn’t require anything from me other than my attention for forty-five minutes and a pretty hefty suspension of disbelief. I watched them struggle with understanding and communicating with people inherently alien to them, struggle with their emotions, and struggle with determining which situations were a real threat and which just looked scary. These three, fully grown men, who were in charge of a starship had the same problems as me (though obviously with more karate chops and photon torpedoes). And they helped me heal. So now I always try to keep in mind that Captain Kirk will always, always, save the Enterprise, a planet, his weekly love interest, some orphans, and me, but first I might have to boldly go.
From an anonymous 78-year-old: From Buck Rogers to Flash Gordon to Captain Video to Lost in Space and all the others in between, Science Fiction reached a new high 50 years ago when Star Trek enter on the scene. This program had it all from keen gadgets, aliens, space travel, great plots, and of course contemporary comments on the world’s weakness. Can there be any doubt that 50 years from now, people will still be talking about this entry into the great beyond?
Fleet Captain Dennis Evans: I really don't remember Star Trek when it originally aired. I would have been 5 when it premiered and never would have been able to stay up that late. I first discovered it later when it aired on channel 42 in Birmingham. I was instantly hooked, I loved everything about it, which is why TOS is still my favorite cast and show. I have two fond memories of Trek that rise above all others, one is in 1979 a friend of mine got a job at channel USS Hephaestus

Lt Phillip Mangina Jr., 1st Officer: Wow it has been 50 years of Star Trek and it has spawned 5 TV series and 13 movies. It also has a fan base around the world and countless fan made films, books, comics. There are even several games that are great to play. But for me, it means that me and my dad can sit down and watch TNG and watch the movies together.
been radically different. I’m very proud that my father and I have both been able to live out some of the ideals of equality, rationality, and openmindedness about the future and technology while serving as Air Force officers. I hope that one day my children will share Trek with me in a way they find as fulfilling as I have. Live long and prosper, Star Trek.
Stan Daniel: Star Trek helped me, helped us all to realize that the impossible is only a matter of time.
Matt Boyd: How I became a casual Star Trek Fan. I grew up in a rural area (Locust Fork). My parents were divorced so every other weekend I had access to comic book stores. I was a regular at Lion and Unicorn and The Optic Nerve. I spent most of my time at home so I got my Sci-Fi mostly from television. Every week I watched Star Trek, we had all the movies on VHS. I went to see every Next Gen movie when they came out. I love Star Trek, I always have. I needed a Nerd mentor, someone to tell me or give me the information about the ins and outs of everything Star Trek.
Lewis Stockham: Star Trek shows how diversity should be celebrated. It inspires the imagination and the Human Spirit of Adventure! Lt JG James Davis: Star Trek is, for me, an essential part of family life. My father was born in late 1956, making him nine years old when Star Trek originally aired. Star Trek was an inspirational part of his upbringing, encouraging him to study harder than his peers in school, eventually winning a number of state-level awards in the sciences in high school. For one of these achievements he was invited as a guest to dine with John Glenn. His achievements allowed him to pursue the first college degree in our family history and then on to several more, including three doctoral degrees. He did this having come from parents who saw little value in education and only attended school through second grade. While I could continue on about my father’s achievements (that I will never match), what is really important and relevant is that he made sure to share a love of Trek with me. He hoped the show would inspire me to pursue my dreams and not limit myself to what I thought I knew about the world. Every Sunday afternoon following Gunsmoke we’d watch a few episodes of Trek and talk about the theme of the episode for a while. By the time Next Generation aired, we were hooked as a family. If it weren’t for the hard work and original ideas of the Star Trek crew in the 60’s, my family could have
I knew about comics, I knew about movies, and I knew about comedy. I didn’t know about the books of information about Trek. I wasn’t raised by collectors. My dad was a pack rat but my mom wasn’t. My mom is one of those people who find it really easy to throw away things. We have never been able to be those people who go to Antiques Road Show with some old thing from the attic that turns out to be worth a lot of money. If I wanted to keep something I had to hide it which I did. I have dug in the garbage to get back figures. My dad was obsessed with art. He loved fantasy (so did I, but I loved Sci-fi too). My dad was obsessed with Dungeons and Dragons. He had some of the miniatures but he was more interested with the art of Fantasy. Besides comic book stores I spent a lot of time at The Birmingham Museum of Art. My friends were into other geeky things. One was a gamer, one was into comics, one was into anime but none of them were into Trek. I became a Casual (or maybe that is not a good way of putting it) fan.

While on an Away Mission By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller “Both you and the Klingons were duped. No reason to add salt to your wounds.”
Recap: While in a meeting to solve the Klingon and Romulan dispute the Vorta changes in to a founder and tries to escape. Quick thinking on Phillip’s part, he stuns the Founder. Then as security rush in there is an explosion.
Vobok looks confused but accepts my answer. While we are talking, the Founder tries to get out of the container we have him in but to no avail and he takes a founder form. I look him in the eye, “Because you tried to cause a war between the Romulans and the Klingons I will be turning you over to the Romulans for whatever they feel is appropriate punishment. When they are done with you I will then make arrangements for you to be turned over to the Klingons for whatever punishment they deem right. Hopefully the Klingons will see what the Romulans did as sufficient but I would not count on it. After that you will be returned to your people.”
**** As Mike restores order in the Mess Hall. James calls for more security to handle the Founder. I call up to the Bridge to find out what happen. “Captain to Bridge, what just happen up there?” “Danny here, MarkAdam, The Jem’Hadar ship just exploded. The Romulan ship just cloaked. I have raised shields and all weapons are manned. I am tracking four Klingon ships coming in to range.” “Thanks Admiral. I will try to calm things from here. Please keep me posted. If it looks like the Klingons are going to rain on this parade, then put up the umbrella and warp us out of here.”
The founder says nothing and forms a gold puddle on the floor of the container. James and Sandra escort the Romulans to guest quarters and assign two people to take care of their needs. “Martok, if you will contact your ships to stand down, I will have Mike escort you to the Transporter room. Phillip, have security take the Founder to the brig.”
“Will do Captain.” I turned to Vobok, “Seems like you had an ace up your sleeve. You didn’t trust the Jem’Hadar so you hid a bomb to destroy them if they turned against you.”
I shook hands with Martok and Worf then headed to the Bridge. As I stepped off the turbo lift I noticed the Klingon ships taking off in different directions. Turning to Brenda at communications, “Contact Romulan Command that we have two of their officers and a prisoner for them. We need a ship to meet us at the Romulan Neutral Zone to pick them up.” Turning to the helm I bellowed, “Pete set a course for the Romulan Neutral Zone nearest Federation space.” Pete confirmed, “Course plotted and laid in.” Looking to Donald who is sitting at the helm, “Donald, get us out of here. Warp factor 6.”
Vobok derided, “I thought the Romulan senate was too trusting of these renegade Jem’Hadar. When my men inspected their ship we made sure that they could be destroyed if they proved dishonest. My ship has left for Romulus to inform the Senate that we have been lied to. I and Teshek are your prisoners. You may do as you wish with us.” “Since we are in Klingon space it will be up to Martok.” As I say this I look over at Martok. “If he doesn’t object we will provide passage to a neutral world to have you taken back to Romulus.” Martok begins to stand up, but with a look from Mike he just nods his head which I take as a sign that he agrees to my proposal.
Donald replied in an Scottish brogue, “Aye, Capt’n.” The End
Vobok looks stun, “What? Why? We tried to get in a fight with the Klingons!” USS Hephaestus

Star Trek Fiction Star Trek: The New Adventures – The Final Two By Ensign 1st Class Donald Arnold
Thanos smiled for the first time in a while. He managed to get a hold on the blue gem: the time gem. Bill held the yellow (power), orange (reality), purple (soul), and green (space) gems. The only missing stone was the red mind gem. Thanos had to find it before Bill did or hope may be lost. Luckily, possessing the time stone meant he could send his pawns back to find Kirk.
It was then that Bill realized his goose was cooked and quietly explained, “I’m from the future. I don’t know how I got here. I blame these… stones I keep finding. I’ve been in all sorts of different worlds that make no sense. I’m convinced that I’m here to find one of the final two stones.” Before Vision could respond, the door blew open. Two men entered. Vision yanked Kirk to the ground and said, “Doctor Doom and Loki are here. We have to get back to Avengers Tower and alert Mr. Stark. We will discuss your issue later. Do you have any power whatsoever outside of the gems?” Bill nodded and Vision said, “Avoid using the gems as much as possible. Go!”
Bill walked the streets of New York, looking for the man called Steve Rogers, or as he was known in this time: Captain America. These were the kind of stories Bill had always thought to be fiction. Having no success in finding Rogers, who apparently didn’t want to be found, Bill wandered into a restaurant that served something called shawarma. There he saw a man who didn’t look like a man.
Doctor Doom stomped and commanded, “Everyone leave this place now if you wish to live!” All the citizens ran out. Vision and Bill stood tall, waiting. Loki grinned ear-to-ear and jested, “See here. A pathetic mortal and an android. Our master will be very pleased that you’ve been found.” “Who is your master?” Bill ordered. Doom laughed and responded, “You shall meet him soon so we shall not answer.” Bill shot back, “Not as soon as you’d think,” and the fireworks started. Bill willed the staff into a pendant and shot energy back and forth with Loki. Within minutes Vision subdued Doctor Doom and focused the mind stone’s energy on Loki. Bill got close enough to land a right hook and knock Loki out cold. Soon, Bill and Vision were out the door running for Avengers Tower.
“Excuse me, sir,” Bill said. The man looked up and replied, “Yes?” Bill sat down in the booth with him and explained, “I’m not from around here. Do you know if there’s been… maybe a meteor shower recently?” The man shook his head, and responded, “No, sir. Are you looking for something?” Bill struggled for a moment. He couldn’t tell this man that he had four supernatural stones and was looking for a fifth but he had to say something. After a moment of the man looking at him curiously, he answered, “Not really something. Someone maybe.” “Who?” the stranger questioned almost robotically. Bill whispered, “Steve Rogers. Captain America?” The stranger looked concerned and warned, “You don’t want to find Steve Rogers. Trust me. If I were you I would go back where I came from.” Bill got a little agitated at this point and said, “Listen. I came a very long way looking for something very important and I think Steve can help me find it, Mr. …”
Once back at Avengers Tower, Bill relayed his story to Tony, Vision, and Thor in a private meeting. Tony automatically dismissed him, saying, “Sorry. That stone is kinda fueling my associate here so I can’t just give it up to some random guy who may or may not be from the future.” Vision disagreed, explaining, “If Thor can break the stone with Mjölnir or the lightning of Mjölnir, one piece can be given to

Captain Kirk and the other can be used to keep me alive. I do not require the whole stone.” Tony persisted, “No. Not happening. Sorry, buddy. Go back to the future and tell them I said ‘hi’.” Thor weighed in, “I will do it.” Tony raised his voice and declared, “I said we’re not doing it!” Thor and Vision turned to him and, in unison, said, “We will.”
studied the fighting styles of the four enemies. First, he went after Red Skull who seemed to specialize in hand to hand. He gave him a blast of flames which allowed Peter and Natasha to get the upper hand and knock him out. Peter used what appeared to webs to keep him still. Next, Bill went after Doctor Doom, who depended on energy blasts. He suggested an allsides assault so that Doom had to melee. With his energy blasts nearly useless, Bill was able to do a kick that swiped Doom’s legs. Peter subdued him just like Red Skull. Thor handled Loki which left nearly all focus on Ultron, who adapted. Bill suggested they use an attack Ultron couldn’t mimic.
Tony, looking defeated, walked out of the room muttering. Vision laid down on a table and Thor removed the stone. He raised Mjölnir to split the stone and Tony and Natasha ran in. Tony shakenly said, “We’ve got four hostiles. Loki, Doctor Doom, Red Skull, Ultron. All hands on deck.” Bill said, “Vision’s out of the game at the moment. I’ll fill in.” Thor nodded and Tony didn’t speak.
For the first time since he entered this universe, he used the glove. He sent a multicolored blast out and Ultron’s red eyes and mouth went black and lifeless. With the four villains subdued, Tony sent for S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who retrieved the men quickly. Tony unlocked the conference room and Thor split the stone. One half returned to Vision’s forehead, the other floated into Bill’s glove. As Bill felt himself being pulled forward again, he said, “Thanks. Wish me luck.” With that Bill was once again, floating forward. Again, he saw what lie ahead: Home. At long last, William Tiberius Kirk was returning home.
Peter, Rhodey, and T’Challa are keeping them at bay. FRIDAY, lock this room as soon as we leave. I don’t want anybody getting their hands on Vision!” Friday, the computer, responded, “Yes, Mr. Stark,” and as the four of them exited the room, Bill heard various locks. After a bit of searching, Bill and the team caught up with the four invaders. Three men, one dressed in a red and blue suit, one in a black and grey suit resembling Tony’s, and one in a black metal suit resembling a cat were fighting the four intruders. Natasha produced pistols and started firing and Thor went to handle his brother. Tony looked to Bill and asked, “So, future boy, what do you do?” Bill smiled and his hands burst into flames. Tony said, “Um… That’s enough explanation for me. Waste ‘em.” Bill

Reviews Books Crash – Book Two in the Mark IV Anna Series by Danny B. McGuire, Self-Published Review by Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller Danny B. McGuire is still working wonders writing the Mark IV Anna Series. I started reading this series because I met Mr. McGuire at a convention. His friendly tone and interest in writing drew me into wanting to read his books. Once I began reading them they were hard to put down. This third book is the same way. Mr. McGuire’s style makes you feel if you don’t continue reading then the story is going to go on without you. This book has Anna being taken back to where she was made by Eliza (Mark III, a previous version before Anna). As they are traveling back, the plane they are traveling on Crashes (hence the name of the book) in a country fighting a civil war. Anna and Eliza are captured by a rebel force that is trying to over thrown the government. The action of the book is nonstop as Anna has to try and stay one step ahead of the ruthless leader of the rebel forces that have captured her and Eliza. In Book Zero, Anna learning about things was helped along by the people who created her, commenting on what she was learning and why. Book One was different: the people from Book Zero are gone so the human commentary is missing. Anna relying on herself causes a change in tone of how the book was written. This book is written in the same tone as Book One since Anna is still on her own and learning how to use what she was given without the context of humans explaining how she needs to act. This books also shows Anna doubting herself because of the death of the people to whom she had become close. She doesn’t want anyone else to die but those who want to control her don’t care who dies as long as they get her back. This book was a good read. It had parts that added to the story of Anna and makes me want to read the next book in the series. The problem: the book is a transition book from Book One to Book Three (not yet written). Certain pieces need to be in place for Book Three and this book is setting up the board for that book. The one part that would help is the General Xiang Yao character needed more background. In the two previous books the background characters seemed more three-dimensional and I had a reason to like or dislike them. General Yao was two-dimensional and did not come off the page like the other characters did. Don’t miss reading this book as it does add to the character of Anna and Eliza but it is not on the level as the first two. Rate: AAAAa Review of Beta Test – Book Zero in the Mark IV Anna series can be found in the July The Anvil. and No Escape -Book One in the Mark IV Anna Series can be found in the August The Anvil. Bioshock: Rapture By John Shirley Reviewed by Phillip Mangina Jr. FDR's New Deal had redefined American politics. Taxes were at an all-time high. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had created a fear of total annihilation. The rise of secret government agencies and sanctions on business had many watching their backs. America's sense of freedom was diminishing and many were desperate to take that freedom back. Among them was a great dreamer: an immigrant who pulled himself from the depths of poverty to become one of the wealthiest men in the world. The man was Andrew Ryan and he believed that great men and women deserved better. So he set out to create the impossible: a utopia free from government, from censorship, and from moral restrictions on science, where what you gave was what you got. He created Rapture - the shining city below the sea. But the utopia suffered a great tragedy. This is the story that explains what happens before the games on the computer or gaming consoles. The backdrop is in the mid-1940s after WWII and people of Rapture have gotten addicted to plasmids which is a power-like fire from the finger tips. The people of the city started battling each other to take over the city. Rate: AAAAA
Movies Pete’s Dragon Reviewed by Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller When an animated movie is made into a live action I usually feel that it will not work out very well. When I first saw the trailers for Pete’s Dragon I was interested but afraid that the story would not hold up to the CGI dragon that was being shown. But Disney was up to the challenge and brought a story that went along with the beautiful CGI dragon that was created. Although those who are fond of the original may be disappointed. This is a different story from the original. The movie starts out slow then picks up. In my opinion, setting up why Pete is with the dragon, contributed to this. Also I think the shock that happens in the beginning added to it. Personally I would have done the shock in a flashback sequence instead of the beginning of the film. The shock scene also might be a little dramatic for younger viewers. Once we get through the shock and the setup of the characters the story picks up steam and it’s off on the enjoyable story that we came to see: a boy and his dragon. Oakes Fegley, who plays Pete, did a really good job of making the audience believe that he was interacting with a real Dragon. If he is doing this good at this age, then he could be the next Harrison Ford or Chris Pine. Bryce Dallas Howard (Grace) did such an excellent job that I didn’t even recognize her as the lady in Jurassic World. Robert Redford as the story teller and father to Ms. Howard’s character adds the needed magic to make the film seem like a legend that could be true. Oona Laurence (Natalie), Wes Bentley (Jack) and Karl Urban (Gavin) round out the major cast giving what is needed to move the story along. I am not sure how Mr. Urban keeps up with all he does but his performance is on par with what he does Star Trek. As for the CGI Dragon, I love Elliot. I hate to even mention that he is CGI because I could believe that Disney did find a dragon to play Elliot. I am not sure what all Disney did but they pulled this one off very well. An enjoyable film that I will be glad to add to my Disney Blu-Ray collection. Rate: AAAAa USS Hephaestus

Star Trek News & More CBS All Access How do you want to watch Star Trek: Discovery? CBS All Access is giving you two options. The regular service comes with commercials that help defray the cost of streaming to you on your computer. The cost of that is $5.99. The other option is commercial free which comes in at a price of $9.99. The question is how many commercials do we have to sit through to watch Star Trek? Since I personally DVR so much and zip through the commercials it may be hard to sit through them so it may be worth the $4 extra dollars to get commercial free. I am also hoping for more programing other than just Star Trek. You can sign up at cbs.com/allaccess. (www.treknews.net)
The Roddenberry Vault Do we know everything that we could possible know about Star Trek? We have heard the actors and crew discuss what went on behind the scenes so all the information about Star Trek should be know. Roddenberry Estate now reveals that over the years, bits and pieces of film that was left on the cutting room floor had been kept and they are now being released. The pieces have been cataloged and put together to show some of the things that went on behind the scenes while filming Star Trek. CBS and Roddenberry Estates have put together a 3 disk Blu-ray set that has three Exclusive Special Feature Documentaries Presenting Unseen Footage, 12 episodes that the unseen footage is part of and new interviews with notable Star Trek figures. Some of the episodes include Trouble with Tribbles, The City on the Edge of Forever and The Corbomite Maneuver. The set will be on sale on Dec. 13th in time for the Christmas gift giving season. (www.treknews.net)
Star Trek: Discovery News Slowly things are coming out about Star Trek: Discovery. One item that Bryan Fuller talked about in an interview with KERN-FM radio’s Nerd World Report is that the female star will be named Number One in honor of Majel Barrett’s character in The Cage. He didn’t say if it was the same character as Ms. Barrett’s. He also seemed to back track the statement that Discovery is in the prime universe. The show is taking place before the Kelvin incident so it could be in either the prime or the Kelvin universe. This was partly done so that the movies don’t have to worry about what the TV show is doing and vice versa. The other news is that Simon & Shuster and IDW will be coming out with books and comics that will go along with the new series. Their release will tie-in with the release of the series on CBS All Access. This was announced at the Mission Star Trek: New York convention that was held at the beginning of September. Never Forget… Barry Jenner – August 9,2016 (age 75) Best known to Star Trek fan as Commander Sisko’s superior Admiral Bill Ross in Star Trek Deep Space Nine (1997-1999). He also voiced the character for the video game Star Trek Deep Space Nine - Dominion Wars. Some may know him better as Dr. Jerry Kenderson from the TV show Dallas (1984-1986) USS Hephaestus

Kenny Baker - August 13, 2016 (age 81) Best known for being the man inside the R2-D2 droid in the Star Wars saga films. He was also Fidgit in the movie Time Bandits (1981). Even though his face was never seen in the Star Wars film, many said it was him who gave personality to R2-D2. One of the stories told about him is that the crew of Star Wars: A New Hope forgot to get him out of R2 when they went to lunch. When the crew came back they found R2 smoking. Fearing that that Kenny was in trouble they ran over to R2 and opened R2 up to find Kenny inside smoking on a cigar which was causing the smoke. Gene Wilder – August 29, 2016 (age 83) Known for Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles. Mr. Wilder said about comedy: Don’t try to make it funny, try to make it real. I’m an actor, not a clown. The best thing to say about Mr. Wilder is from a line from Willy Wonka: A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men. This is what Mr. Wilder brought to us.
The Captain’s Top 10 TV shows that shaped my Science Fiction paradigm. 1. Star Trek (1966 –1969) 2. Lost in Space (1965 –1969) 3. Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964 – 1968) 4. Twilight Zone (1959 – 1964) 5. Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979 – 1981) 6. Battlestar Galactica (1978 – 1979) 7. Batman (1966 – 1968) 8. Wonder Woman (1975 – 1979) 9. Ark II (1976 – 1979) 10. Space Academy (1977 – 1979) Some these might not be great Science Fiction but they still had something that made for interesting TV. Today’s Sci-Fi depends too much on great special effects and I think it needs to go back to making sure there is a good story first.

Ship’s Log August 20, 2016 – Social
was interesting to see another aspect of STARFLEET. We ended the trip by going to see my parents in Ohio for my mother’s birthday.
The August social was a good getting to know each other social. Several people shared stories of interesting things that happened in their lives. Our world traveler James Michael Davis was able to come. Carly Strickland wore a neat sweater that you will have to check out in the September Anvil. She also brought some banana nut muffins that were so good that Pete Mohney was not willing to share. We watched classic Trek (Squire of Gothos, Arena, and Tomorrow is Yesterday).
Lt JG James Davis’ Personal Log August 28, 2016 Greetings, shipmates! While my berth in the U.S.S. Hephaestus has been an inviting and fulfilling experience, I have found that STARFLEET in general has a real strength in its fellowship, both within individual chapters and among members spread across the galaxy. We’re all united in our appreciation for Trek, so there’s room for everyone at the table. On August 28th, I got to pull up a chair at that table and enjoy a celebratory lunch with the U.S.S. Dejah Thoris in honor of their fifth anniversary as a correspondence chapter! There was a fantastic turnout in which most of the region was represented. I got to shake hands with members of the Dejah Thoris. The Captain of the Longbow played with our youngest cadet. I made friends with a member of the U.S.S. Werner von Braun. Even Ryan Case was in attendance representing both the Haise and region-level leadership. In addition to the great Mexican food we shared stories, congratulations, cake, awards, and door prizes. Our own Lieutenant Commander Brenda Miller won a tribble! There should be more to go around soon considering that as far as Bones can tell, they’re born pregnant. If ever there presents another opportunity to enjoy fellowship with our sister ships, please consider coming out and representing the Hephaestus. You won’t be disappointed!
Attendance: 9 People August 25, 2016 – Exploring Trek We discussed the latest Star Trek Movie – Star Trek Beyond. This was a little different as in the past we were playing the episode in the background as we discussed the episode. We could not do this as the movie is not out on Blu-Ray yet. The general feel of the group was that they liked the movie. We also had a special guest as Crewman Bear was on hand to answer questions about Star Trek Build-a-Bear merchandise. Popcorn with 3 choices of seasonings, Twizzlers, Cherry Coke and Grape Soda were available.
Attendance: 6 people and Crewman Bear. August 28, 2016 - 5th anniversary of the Dejah Thoris I, Brenda A. Miller and James Michael Davis, with daughter Kimberly in tow, traveled up to Decatur, AL to celebrate the 5th anniversary of our sister ship USS Dejah Thoris. Also in attendance was crewmembers from the USS Wernher von Braun, the USS Longbow and the Region 2 Coordinator Ryan Case with his lovely wife, Ann. We had a great meal and a fun time meeting with the other ships. Personal thanks to James for taking time to represent the Hephaestus at the celebration.
Crewman Bear’s personal Log August 25, 2016 – Exploring Trek This was my first outing with the crew of the Hephaestus. Many were happy to meet me. Only problem is no one offered to give me a Twizzler…

Exploring Trek The August Exploring Trek discussion was on the new movie Star Trek Beyond. To get the discussion started we first discussed our favorite Star Trek movie which was either Star Trek II: Wrath of Kahn or Star Trek: First Contact. We then went in to the different characters. What had changed, been added and what had remained the same. After that we tackled the story. Discussing the tributes to the various Star Trek shows, the deaths of Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin. Most everyone was pleased with this new movie. The follow up questions to work on your own were: 1. Discuss the differences of Stat Trek Beyond verses what you think is the best Star Trek Movie. 2. Discuss the differences of Star Trek Beyond verse what you think is the worse Star Trek Movie. For the September 22nd meeting, we will be discussing VOY: Living Witness. October will be the last panel discussion for year but we will also get together for dinner sometime in November to celebrate what we discussed. Get what November dates you’re available to share with the September Group as well as where you would like to eat. If there is an episode or topic you would like to explore please email me with your suggestions. You can email me your thoughts on these questions at cohephaestus@bellsouth.net. Thank you to Kingdom Comics and Albert Marsh for letting us use their Store.

STARFLEET Academy By Lt JG James M. Davis Who is excited to receive their Boothby awards!? If you’re asking “What is a Boothby award?” this is the review for you. This month, I’d like to take a moment to talk about STARFLEET Academy. Most everyone has at least heard of STARFLEET Academy, but not everyone has tried a course or two. If you haven’t, I’d say it’s high time to dive into something new and give it a go. You won’t have to travel to San Francisco, and you won’t have to accept a five-year commission. By visiting acad.sfi.org, you’ll get the opportunity to immerse yourself in whatever fandom or interest you can imagine. When you “enroll” in a STARFLEET Academy course, you are asking a fellow member of STARFLEET International to send you a quiz (in .pdf, .doc, or similar file type) that you fill out and return for credit. If this doesn’t necessarily sound like fun yet, keep reading. These “courses” offer you a chance to delve into a topic of interest of your choice to learn more about it. Perhaps you’ll find yourself reading a Wikipedia article for which you wouldn’t have considered taking the time to read before, even if you had an interest in the topic. Perhaps there’s a movie you haven’t seen in a while but having a short, simple quiz to follow along with will give you a reason to dust off that old Batman DVD. Perhaps you could suggest a particular course that we can all do together during a chapter social (no cheating)! Topics of study range from xenobiology (the actual study of extraterrestrial life) to old western television series, and from comic book characters to Norse mythology. You can study topics in history, medicine, aerospace, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or any other discipline you may imagine. If it doesn’t exist, but you feel passionate about the topic, you can apply to create the course or school and share it with the rest of STARFLEET! Now that you’re familiar with the basics, you may wish to move on to the STARFLEET Academy degree program. While I wouldn’t put an SFA Doctorate in Science Fiction Studies on my résumé any time soon, you can earn one for fun and Boothby Awards by completing some core studies (mostly leadership and STARFLEET organization) along with a specialty (Star Trek Studies, Security, etc.) and some electives just to keep things interesting. While even the lower level degrees such as Associates and Bachelor require quite a number of courses, the leadership and organizational study is beneficial for being a contributing member of STARFLEET as a whole and it’s always fun to be recognized for delving further into one’s hobbies. Every fifty quizzes one submits and passes earns a crewman another level of Boothby award, and there are over two thousand courses available with even more being written all the time. If you’re looking for even more SFA fun, try the SFMC Academy. You can see what our STARFLEET Marines are all about while receiving credit to your awards or degree program! I hope you are inspired to give STARFLEET Academy a try if you haven’t before. If you’re a SFA veteran, I hope Lt Cmdr Miller and I give you a challenge. Thanks to all the volunteers who run our various colleges and write the brilliant reference material. It has certainly earned my top five combadges out of five rating. Congrats on your Boothby, Lieutenant Commander*. I’m right on your heels! * Note: Lt. Commander Brenda Miller finished 7 more courses this past month and received her Bronze Boothby (her first Boothby) for completing fifty courses. Ensign 1st Class Donald Arnold was inducted in to Blue Squad for his achievements in 2015. – From Fleet Captain Miller USS Hephaestus

There are two categories of Marines: Active which means all ranks will be Marine ranks, and Reserve which means you stay primarily STARFLEET and only use Marine ranks when doing marine activities. If you are interested or have questions about the Marines, then contact Lt. General Neil Yawn at the654msgwho@aol.com. Also check out the Marine Academy for some interesting courses to take to help you achieve your Boothby Awards.
