Editor Desk Dear Readers, The emerging MPS market in India currently draws US$86 million in annual revenue, with the direct market producing US$75 million and the indirect market contributing US$11 million. Despite the comparatively small size of MPS revenue in India, the market had the highest growth rate of all countries covered in Photizo Group’s 2010 MPS Size, Share and Forecast Report. Major industries for MPS adoption include financial services, manufacturing and healthcare, of which the majority are enterprise customers. Although enterprise firms in India are the most likely to engage in an MPS program, the number of national and midmarket accounts is growing. The major vendors in the current Indian MPS market are Xerox, HP and Canon, who control a significant share of the market. While global OEMs are actively participating in the Indian market, the channel faces numerous barriers, including limited knowledge of MPS and unattractive financing options, among others. Regardless of comparatively small revenue, OEMs are clearly paying attention to the Indian MPS market; no doubt attracted by a large services sector, an educated workforce and an increasingly stable political environment. Channel partners, to the contrary, face many obstacles at this point, though the widespread use of English should facilitate easy market entry for pre-existing software tools once the channel matures.

up a West Coast Distribution Center, expanding our footprint in New Jersey and adding remanufactured printers to our catalogue, we’ve had an incredibly busy four years,” said Eric Katz, Metrofuser’s Chief Financial Officer. “To be recognized by Inc. in all of those years and in an unfriendly economic climate is a source of pride for us and a testament to our commitment to always being ahead of the curve in product development and offering the highest quality remanufactured parts in our business.” Metrofuser remanufactures and distributes laser printer parts, remanufactured printers and offers service training for HP, Lexmark and Canon laser printers. The company offers a broad array of laser printer products from its Eastern and Western distribution hubs including fusers, maintenance kits, boards, and paper handling assemblies. With this accomplishment, Metrofuser joins the rarified company of enterprises who have appeared on the list multiple times, many of which have grown to become national icons. The 2011 Inc. 5000, unveiled, serves as a unique report card on the U.S. economy. Making the list perhaps the best example of the impact private, fast-growing companies can have on the economy.

ILG Wins First Place in 2011 Green Award
I
LG (International Laser Group) was voted the winner of the 2011 Green Award by the industry and by the Recharger Magazine readers. The Green Award was awarded on July 20, 2011 during Recharger’s Readers Choice Awards at World Expo in Las Vegas. The Green award is presented to the company the industry recognizes as the leader in “Environmentally conscious products or services” and for demonstrating a “commitment to sustainable green manufacturing business.”ILG has long been recognized as green for its merit as one of the leading OEM alternative toner cartridge remanufacturers in North America. But ILG’s commitment to maintaining an ecologically friendly manufacturing and business operation extends beyond recycling. ILG’s rigorous quality controlled manufacturing processes ensure that recycled and recyclable parts are utilized in re-manufacturing of toner cartridges. Since 2007, ILG has worked diligently to recycle increasingly more manufacturing scrap. The company continually researches and invests in new ways to reduce its ecological footprint. What’s more, while many remanufacturers have narrowed the scope of their recycling programs, ILG remains steadfast in its quest to make recycling easy and free. “We are honoured to receive first-place in the Green Award from our industry. Our commitment to the environment is not new. What is new is our aggressive empty core collection recycling program. We’re proud of our green stance, and we want our customers to take comfort in knowing that no product received will end up in a landfill,” said Gary Michaels, chief operating officer. ILG’s recycling program conforms to ISO 14001:2004 standards. The program also maintains a documented Zero Landfill Initiative, which means that approximately 97 percent of all material received through the program will be reused or recycled. ILG also expanded its recycling to include “E-Core-Cycle” an empty buy-back recycling program. Recycling used toner cartridges is easy and free. ILG will pay for the shipping and provide the labels, and ILG’s empties collection department disperse money quickly to pre-approved customers.
dealers. The small- to medium-sized business (SMB) customer is receptive to a new way of supporting its internal IT environment. The shift is occurring now, and forward-looking dealers have an opportunity to build a customer base in this growing market today. Once the shift occurs, winning new business will mean replacing the incumbent provider. MNS offers a more cost-effective way for your customers to manage their current spending on IT support. The service features monitoring of network devices and ongoing administration using the latest in automation tools. As an example, utilizing mature technology tools, a help-desk technician can support eight to 12 times the number of devices that an on-site resource can manage. This equates to 300 to 400 workstation devices per technician. It is simply a better way to manage the network using more technology and automation and

But we are facing these problems with fewer resources. Erwin and SCC have intelligence and strength that will help us mightily in our endeavors.”I would like to welcome Erwin to the board of the Int’l ITC,” said President Darrell Stepp. “I look forward to working with Erwin as we remain the voice that speaks out for the rights of the aftermarket dealer and we continue our work to assure we have a fair and open opportunity to compete in the marketplace.”Membership in the International Imaging Technology Council can improve a member’s business while supporting the entire industry. The Int’l ITC is a member-based trade association that advances the interests of the aftermarket imaging supplies industry. The twelve-year-old, non-profit association represents its members’ common business objectives, particularly the right to conduct business freely and fairly.

different inkjet cartridges including the latest cartridges from HP and Canon. The time-honoured Westlake Ace Hardware, founded as Westlake Hardware over 100 years ago, is now the largest member of the Ace Hardware family and encompasses over 80 neighbourhood stores in seven Midwestern US states. The new Ink-ODem inkjet cartridge refill service will begin on August 8 at all five Lawrence and Topeka, Kansas locations and the Olathe, KS location near Kansas City. “Our friends at Westlake Ace Hardware are very big on sustainability because they understand its importance. According to Lyra Research, over a million inkjet cartridges are thrown into landfills every day, adding 60,000 tons of industrial grade plastic to landfills each year. Together, we can incrementally make a big difference by refilling inkjet cartridges instead of throwing them away. And the 50 percent or greater cost savings to both consumers and small businesses are tremendous,” said Tom Price, Business Development Manager at Ink-O-Dem. “Recently, we have shifted our business strategy to be better positioned for continued growth, and this includes a focus on sustainability. Adding Ink-O-Dem’s ink cartridge refilling service just makes perfect sense as it is convenient, green, and affordable. We will have this new service in six of our Olathe, Lawrence and Topeka, Kansas area stores initially and plan to expand the rollout from there,” said Boyd White, Corporate Merchant of Westlake Ace Hardware.

Nobody wants to be left behind in a changing industry.” Static Control Components, Recharger Magazine, Printer Essentials and MSE are among the member companies that sponsor the meetings. “A lot of important information is exchanged at these meetings,” said Int’l ITC Chairman Lester Cornelius. “And even more important is the business that is transacted.” Tricia Judge, the executive director of the International Imaging Technology Council, will be in attendance at these meetings and will discuss the future direction and growth of the Int’l ITC and the industry. “There are some interesting developments in both legal and commercial matters that are of great importance to imaging supplies dealers everywhere,” Judge said. “I look forward to discussing the ways that these important events can translate into more business for our members.” All imaging supplies dealers in each area and the surrounding states are invited to attend these meetings, free of charge, to learn more about the benefits offered by their local chapter and the Int’l ITC. Meals, cocktails and even a golf outing are planned for this autumn’s events. “If you are not a member, you should be,” said Gary Frager of Pagoda Computer Supplies and Great Lakes Chapter Chairman. “These meetings are a great way to learn how Int’l ITC benefits you.”

PrintFleet Announces Integration Capability with Xerox’s PagePack Program

rintFleet Inc.announced that it has formed a strategic partnership with Xerox. The joint project integrates PrintFleet’s device management software with Xerox’s PagePack 3.0 to expand on customers’ existing backend management systems by exporting metered data into Xerox’s PagePack for billing purposes. PagePack partners that use PrintFleet Enterprise for managing print devices can now easily expand their managed printer offering to include Xerox PagePack devices by integrating meter counts collected by PrintFleet’s Data Collection Agent (DCA) into the Xerox PagePack program. The PrintFleet report will automatically export, on a customizable schedule, directly into PagePack, effectively removing the need for two data collection tools at the customer’s site.“We are pleased to be able to collaborate with Xerox, a leader in both the document imaging industry and the MPS marketplace, on an initiative that provides true value to both of our customers. This integration report provides additional functionality to PrintFleet users, removes the need for manual data entry and simplifies the billing process for those who are also using the PagePack program,” commented Chris McFarlane, president and COO, PrintFleet Inc. PrintFleet is the global leader in Print Management Technology and Solutions. PrintFleet’s marketleading technology coupled with an excellent go-to-market program delivers unsurpassed value to PrintFleet dealer’s and distributor’s, fast-tracking their transition from selling commodity products and services to offering industry leading Managed Print Technology and Solutions.
complete and comprehensive coverage of all European countries by leveraging the strengths of each company.” The company sees the manufacturing facility in Serbia as key to bringing products to market quickly and cost-effectively. Clover asserts that it now employs more than 800 workers in Europe, making it Europe’s largest remanufacturer. The company also points out that since April 2010 it has acquired West Point, ERS, Pinpoint, Wireless Source, Reclaim IT, Depot America, OPRA, and now TRS. In the United States, the remanufacturing industry has seen significant consolidation, and Clover’s growth, much of it driven by snapping up smaller companies, is one reason why. Obviously, the firm has competition in the North American market, but the number of competitors has shrunk. For example, Clover’s success is one key factor that brought down former remanufacturing powerhouse Nukote. Nukote lost a key customer, Office Depot, to Clover. Now, the one-time remanufacturing giant is essentially no more. We have heard that Nukote’s facilities have long been shuttered and its website has been shut down. National Computrade News
Epson America and Green Project Settle
E
pson and Green Project had settled a patent-infringement lawsuit and various counterclaims before the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon, Portland Division. The printer OEM and the remanufacturer issued a joint press release on what the two firms termed an “amicable” resolution to their dispute. Epson and Green Project say their amicable settlement puts to an end the patent-infringement lawsuit that Epson filed against Green Project and Green Project President Joseph Wu in 2009. The deal also ends the counterclaims that Green Project filed against the OEM and Epson employee Herb Seitz, claiming trespassing and misappropriation of trade secrets. The two companies note that financial terms of the settlement are confidential. Green Project has agreed to a stipulated consent judgment and permanent injunction. The printer OEM says, “Epson commends Green Project for recognizing the validity and enforceability of Epson’s patents and continuing its vigorous efforts to comply with patent law in order to compete fairly by selling legally refilled cartridges.”

Static Control Introduces Smaller 10oz Toner Bottles to Reduce Waste, Save on Shipping Costs
Static Control has introduced smaller 10oz toner bottles that lower costs while reducing waste and pollution. Remanufacturers can lower freight cost and reduce shipments by receiving more bottles in a single shipment. The smaller bottle size requires less storage space, too. The new, smaller bottles will be used for more than 190 different toner products from Static Control for fill weights of 100 grams or less. For fill weights between 100 grams and 125 grams, toner might be shipped in 10oz bottles depending on trial fill tests. Static Control customers will receive toner in the new, 10oz bottles in mixed shipments over the next several months.

Kodak Introduces New Kodak 30 and 30XL Inkjet Cartridges in ESP C310 All-in-One
K
odak has announced a new set of inkjet cartridges. The move is a bold one for the firm, as its model until now has been to use one set of cartridges for all its products. Kodak originally launched its all-in-one line with the Kodak 10 black and color tanks. At the beginning of 2010, Kodak replaced these with three new tanks—the Kodak 10B and 10XL black tanks and the Kodak 10C color tank. The new tanks were backwardcompatible with devices that had taken the original 10 black and 10 color tanks but offered a higher cost of printing than the firm’s original tanks, and Kodak

stopped shipping the older tanks. Now, with its new Kodak 30 black and color cartridges and Kodak 30XL black and color cartridges, Kodak is introducing a third set of supplies. However, rather than replacing the 10B, 10XL, and 10C, the new cartridges appear to be designed to raise cost per page (CPP) and presumably improve profitability on the lowest-priced inkjet all-in-ones in Kodak’s line. The first product to use the new cartridges, the ESP C310, is expected to begin shipping in April for $99.99. Kodak’s press release indicates that the Kodak 30/30XL cartridges will also be used in the ESP C110 and C315, but the firm provided no information on these two products. The new inkjet all-in-one has a wireless interface and uses a pigmented ink set. Most other specifications, including basics such as print speeds, were unavailable on Kodak’s website.

cartridges. The first products available from the DCBioSelect product range are bio-based shipping locks, which have been certified by the DIN and are for use with remanufactured HP CP 1518/1525 and CP2025 series cartridges. Shipping locks and transport protection parts like developer roller covers are designed as throwaway articles by the OEM. Unfortunately, these transportation protection parts are rarely reused because of a lack of collection possibilities. This makes them a burden to the environment. With the DCBioSelect shipping locks the aftermarket has a truly green alternative. The DELACAMP bio-based shipping locks are made up to 98 percent from bio-based material, which is derived from wooden fibers. This makes them CO2 neutral. DCBioSelect bio-based foil bags and inflatable foil bags are currently in development. Delacamp, with its main office located in Hamburg, Germany is a leading supplier of components and consumables to the remanufacturing industry as well as consumables, components and spare parts for copier machines worldwide. In order to provide superior service to its customers, Delacamp holds a large selection and inventory of matched quality components at competitive prices for immediate delivery. DELACAMP is the exclusive distributor of MK Imaging, DC SELECT, CPT and Kaleidochrome branded products in EMEA. BioBlack toner has been tested using industryrecognized STMC standards and results prove outstanding print quality. Toner-based printer cartridges made with BioBlack toner help reduce the consumption of petroleum-based products and contribute to an ecofriendly office environment.

Dell based the 3333dn and 3335dn on a Lexmark design, so Dell offers both a Use and Return high-yield cartridge for $214.99 and a standard high-yield cartridge for $277.99. The Dell 3333dn and 3335dn also take a separate drum with a yield of 30,000 pages.InkCycle’s remanufactured cartridge for the Dell 3330dn monochrome laser printer yields 14,000 pages, the same as the Dell highyield cartridges. The Dell 3330dn is also based on a Lexmark engine, so Dell offers a Use and Return high-yield cartridge for $214.99 and a non-Use and Return version for $299.99. Undoubtedly, InkCycle sells its remanufactured SKU for significantly less, but pricing was unavailable. The Dell 3330dn also takes a separate 30,000page drum. InkCycle does not appear to be offering remanufactured versions of the standard-yield cartridges for either the Brother or the Dell machines, but that is fairly typical. Remanufacturers typically focus on the high-yield SKUs for a series because their customers

Remanufacturing the Brother HL 3040 Series Toner CartridgesTN-210 Color Toner Cartridges By: Mike Josiah and the Technical Staff at Uninet Imaging added and the starter cartridge made into a full TN210 cartridge. The proper reset positions of the gear will be covered later in this instruction. Figures 1, 2 and 3 show the new toner detection system and the developer bias voltages when a new cartridge is installed. When the printer senses a new toner cartridge, the bias voltage is set to a high voltage. As the cartridge is used, the bias voltage is reduced gradually down to a lower voltage. This process is necessary because according to Brother, a new toner cartridge has a tendency to print light. As the cartridge is used, the density increases (Lower voltage = higher density). To keep the density level even throughout its life, the density bias voltage is reduced
The Brother HL-3040 printer engine is based on a new 17ppm black and color, 2400 x 600 DPI color LED engine. The machines come standard with 32Mb expandable to 512Mb of memory, and all run off a 300 MHz processor. With print speeds of 17ppm and a list price starting at $299.00, these machines are becoming very popular. LED printers use an LED Array instead of a laser/scanner unit to print. This will be explained in the theory section below. The toner cartridges do not have a reset chip on them, but do have a reset gear that must be positioned properly for the machine to accept it as a new cartridge. The starter cartridges that initially came with new printers do not come with a rest gear. A new gear can be
accordingly. (See Figure #3) Each time a new cartridge is installed, the reset gear (Figure #1) engages the gear train. The rib on the reset gear pushes down on the new toner sensor. The bias voltage is then reset, and the cartridge page count is reset to zero. While the cartridge yield is stated in pages printed, it actually is based on the revolutions of the developer roller. The larger the run, the better the yield. There are roller cycles for every print job. There is the warm-up cycle, color registration cycle, developer bias cycle etc. As these cycles are only run once per job, the bigger the print job, the better the yield. When the printer is in a monochrome print mode VS a color print mode, the C, M, and Y cartridge developer rollers

The drum unit is new as well; Part # DR-210CL and is rated for 15,000 pages. This unit has 4 separate drums laid out in line. It will be covered in a future article. If you’re familiar with Brother Cartridges, you know they do not work like other manufacturers cartridges. This series of printers is no exception. Because of that, we will cover the printing theory here.
Figure 4 shows a broad overview of the printing process and the component locations. As you can see these machines use a single pass type system. Figure 5 is a simple diagram that shows the 6 basic steps in the printing process. In the first stage, the Primary Corona Wire places a uniform negative 700VDC voltage on the Corona wire grid which then charges the OPC drum surface. The amount of the negative DC voltage placed on the drum is controlled by the printer’s intensity setting. See Figure 6. While most manufactures have switched over their production to PCR’s to eliminate ozone health issues, Brother states that the amount of ozone expelled from the printer is less than 3.0 mg/h and therefore not harmful to the human body and that applicable safety standards have been complied with. In the second stage, each of the 4 color LED arrays (4992 LED’s) fire into a focusing lens (called the lens array). The beam then strikes the drums surface, reducing the negative charge and leaving a latent electrostatic image on the drum. The areas where the LED light did not

strike the drum will retain the higher negative charge. Figure 7 shows an LED assembly Figure 8 shows how they work. The third or developing stage is where the toner is developed on the drum by the Fig. 7

developing section (or supply chamber), which contains the toner particles. The development stage is actually made up of two steps: toner charging, and the actual development. In the toner charging stage, the foam feed roller brings the toner to the developer roller. The developer roller has a charge placed on it based on the density setting AND the amount of pages printed as set by the reset gear. The doctor blade controls the amount of toner, on the roller. As the LED light exposed areas of the OPC Drum approach the developer roller, the toner particles are attracted to the drum’s surface due to the opposite voltage potentials of the toner, and laser exposed areas of the OPC drum. See
Figures 9 & 10. The fourth stage is the transfer stage. In the transfer stage the transfer roller which is located directly opposite each OPC drum, places a positive DC bias charge on the back of the Image Transfer Belt. Each toner cartridge has a separate transfer charge roller. The image is transferred from the drum directly to the paper. This process is repeated for each color cartridge in the following order: Black, Yellow, magenta, and cyan. See Figure 11. Figure 12 shows how the different basic colors are stacked to get different colors. After the transfer takes place, the printer turns on a set of LED lamps that
irradiate the drums surface to keep the surface potential constant. This step helps eliminate ghost images. In the fifth stage, the image is then fused onto the paper by the fuser assembly. The fuser Assembly is comprised of the upper heating roller and lower pressure roller. The lower pressure roller presses the page up into the upper heating roller which then melts the toner into the paper. This heating assembly consists of a hard metal coated roller with a halogen lamp inside. See Figure 13. The sixth stage is where the drum is cleaned. The drum is cleaned after the image is transferred to the paper by a cleaning roller. This roller uses a DC voltage to attract the residual toner off

the drum. After the cleaning roller has cleaned the drum, the Dc potential is raised and the toner is then transferred back to the drum, where it is then transferred to the image transfer belt. The waste tone is then cleaned off the belt by the belt cleaning roller, and stored in the belt waste chamber. See Figure 14. While this is taking place, the developer roller is moved away from the drum so that it is not contaminated by the waste toner. This cleaning system while somewhat similar to other brother systems is different in that none of the waste toner is recycled back into the new toner supply. How to run test pages, Printer trouble shooting as well as common cartridge problems will be covered at the end of this article.

Be careful not to lose the spring! See Figure 25 11) Remove the screw and end cap for the developer roller. See Figures 26 & 27 12) Remove the developer roller. See Figure 28 13) Carefully vacuum/blow the cartridge clean. Use only low pressure air! (High pressure air can cause leaks in the seals). Be sure to rotate the foam feed roller so it is fully cleaned. See Figure 29 14) Vacuum/blow the doctor blade. We do not recommend that the doctor blade be removed as the developer roller felt seals will be disturbed. Once a new blade is available, great care will have to be taken not to tear the seals causing a leak. The doctor blade can be easily cleaned by blowing the excess toner off, and wiping down with a lint free cloth. Be very careful not to leave any lint behind and do not use any chemicals to clean it! 15) Inspect the magnetic roller felts. A dry, clean, lint free cloth will work fine. 17) Re-install the developer roller long shaft side to the gear side, and white lock pointing up. Turn the lock towards the doctor blade until it locks in place. See Figures 31 & 32 18) Install the opposite side end cap and screw. See Figure 33 19) Install the spring and bushing on the non gear side of the roller. Make sure the bushing moves freely. See Figure 34 17) Install the developer roller gear and two small gears located next to it in the order shown. Install the E-ring. See Figure 35 18) Clean the gears, making sure that they have no toner on them. This is a good time to also check the gear shafts to make sure there is enough grease. If the shafts appear dry, or the grease is contaminated with toner, clean the shaft and inside of the gear. Replace the grease with white lithium grease. Install the 3 mid gears. See Figure 36 19) Set the reset gear and spring as shown. The tail of the spring fits into a notch at the base of the gear. Starter cartridges do not come with this gear, but it can be added and the starter cartridge use as a full TN210. See Figure 37 20) Install the developer roller bushing. See Figure 38

21) Install the gear cover plate, and two screws. See Figure 39 22) Fill the cartridge with the appropriate color and amount of Brother HL-3040 Toner. See Figure 40 23) Replace the fill plug. See Figure 41 24) Wipe the cartridge down to remove any remaining toner dust. 25) Install the developer roller cover. This is important as the developer roller is exposed and is easily damaged or contaminated. See Figure 42

How to Select the Best Paper for Any Job No matter how great your printing technology or design is, if you pick the wrong type of paper for the print, your investment will only go to waste. Different types of print jobs require different paper quality. Picking the right paper type for your print job be it a flyer, postcard or a brochure, will determine whether the outcome is successful. Here we discuss some tips to help you pick the right paper type for your print job, Choosing the right paper for a printing job can be a daunting task. It doesn’t have to be though. When selecting the best paper type for a particular job, you’re often faced with an overwhelming number of options. Asking your printer for “white” is like asking your waiter for “food” — you’ll have to be more specific than that. To the educated consumer, the choices don’t seem nearly as intimidating. Before you order though, you’ve got to know the menu. Paper has ten characteristics that affect its cost and appropriateness for a given job.
Surface
The surface of paper affects its look, feel and printability. When paper is pressed at the mill, it passes through a series of rollers in a process called calendaring. Calendaring affects paper in numerous ways. As the extent of this process increases, paper is made smoother, glossier, more capable of retaining ink, thinner, less opaque and less bright. Why does surface matter? Because people do judge books by their cover.
Color
The color of paper is perhaps the most salient of all characteristics. White is by far the most popular color and is generally optimal for conventional usage. Not all white is the same, however — it runs the gamut from ultra-severe hues to softer, more antique shades. Photo white paper is best for accentuating the contrast between light and dark hues. Off-white sheets produce fewer glares, and are best used for publications such as novels or technical manuals that demand long and uninterrupted attention from
36
readers. When comparing color, always examine paper under standard viewing conditions and with minimal atmospheric distractions.
Brightness
The brightness of paper measures the percentage of light that it reflects. Most papers reflect approximately 60 to 90% of incoming light. Remember: brightness and color is not the same thing. Unlike the color characteristic (which is highly subjective and imprecise), brightness is a strictly quantitative, or measurable, attribute. Brightness is important because it affects readability — high brightness can cause eye strain, while low brightness can produce a blurring effect.
Opacity
The opacity of paper is the degree to which other printing is visible through the page. High opacity, or density, minimizes the visibility of printing on subsequent pages, thus enhancing readability. Opacity increases with the bulk and weight of paper, and is influenced by numerous other factors, including paper color, ink color, coatings, chemicals and coverage.
Grain
The grain of paper describes the direction, or alignment, of its component fibers. Paper grain is either grain long or grain short. When fibers are patterned parallel to the length of a sheet, the paper is grain long. When fibers run parallel to the width of a sheet, the paper is grain short. Grain direction is a critical factor for print jobs because it directly affects usage — for example, paper strength, flexibility, tack and versatility are all impacted by grain direction.
National Computrade News
Weight
The basis weight of paper is calculated as the weight in pounds of one ream, or five hundred sheets. Each main grade of paper has a basic size that is used to determine its basis weight. Remember that paper of equivalent basis weight is not necessarily of equivalent basic size. Smaller sized paper that is thicker can possess a basis weight identical to that of larger, thinner paper. Since paper is sold by the pound, understanding paper weight is imperative to successful cost control programs.
Caliper
The caliper of paper is its thickness. Caliper is measured in thousandths of an inch and referred to as point size. In this system, .001 inch equals one point — and eight-point paper would have a thickness of .008 inch. Do not confuse type point with caliper point. Type point describes the height of a particular font; caliper point describes paper thickness.
Size
The size of paper describes its physical dimensions. An 8.5 x 11 sheet is 8.5 inches wide and 11 inches long. Access to specific information concerning the range of paper sizes available for any given printing job is essential to containing costs and ensuring efficient usage.
Bulk
The bulk of paper denotes its thickness relative to its basis weight. For example, uncalendared paper would have a higher bulk than gloss coated paper. Remember though that paper may be bulkier or thicker than another grade, yet still have the same basis weight.
