Dear Readers, Due to the changing environmental conditions, conservation of nature has become a major challenge in today’s scenario. The basic idea behind biodegradable computer cartridge has an added edge in today’s scenario. In today’s context, e-waste is the fastest growing component of the municipal solid waste stream because people are replacing their mobile phones, computers, televisions, audio equipment, and printers more frequently than ever before. In Europe, e-waste is increasing at three to five per cent a year, almost three times more than the total e-waste stream. Developing countries like India are also expected to triple their e-waste production over the next five years. In such a scenario, the importance of cartridge refilling is felt even more profoundly. Moreover, toner dust contains hazardous materials and inkjet cartridges contain chemicals that can harm the environment. Hence, when the cartridges are disposed off in landfill over time, these chemicals can leach into the groundwater and pollute the environment. The plastics and metals used in manufacturing cartridges come from non-renewable resources. When disposed off, they take many years to deteriorate and thus put increased pressure on our valuable resources.

he European Union has granted a patent for Static Control universal chips. The action means Static Control is the only authorised source for universal cartridge chips for most printer types. Static Control’s patents for universal chip technology have also been awarded in the United States and the governments of nine Eurasian countries as well as Israel, Egypt, Mexico, South Korea and China. Patents are pending in Brazil, India and in Hong Kong. Static Control’s patented universal chip technology enables a single chip to recognise multiple printers in which it might be installed and provides the programming needed for that particular printer, just like a dedicated chip, to deliver full functionality. A single, universal chip can replace multiple dedicated chips, which reduces inventory, simplifies production and lowers production costs. Universal chips also enable the creation of universal cartridges. Static Control provides the industry’s most reliable, fully functional chips that are the most resistant to OEM firmware changes.

InklIng sourcIng opens IN ZhuhaI
T
he New Year will see a new resource available for the industry with the launch of Inkling Sourcing. This is a new venture set up by a small team of experienced industry professionals to help overseas companies find the products and the partners they want within the Asian market. With over 10,000 sku’s to choose from and an estimated 500 plus manufacturers in Asia it is a bewildering choice and one that many companies from outside the region are struggling to fully understand. A sourcing partner specific to our industry with the necessary experience should have a lot to offer. As Southern China is the acknowledged global center of the aftermarket it will not come as a surprise that they are based at the heart of things in Zhuhai, but they also have a European office and are looking to open a USA office in the near future. Designed and set up by industry veterans specifically for the industry, not end users, they will offer a full range of sourcing services. This will run from individual one off product sourcing for difficult to find or niche products through to offering a full procurement partnership option. The company is the brain child of Helen Zhou who since leaving Ninestar 18 months ago has been helping client’s source products in China. She believes there is a gap in the market for a sourcing agency specializing in electronic office supplies. By gathering a group of experienced individuals who have innumerable contacts both in China and the rest of Asia she is convinced that Inkling Sourcing can provide a valuable service to the Aftermarket.

elikan will eliminate 160 jobs in Germany and Switzerland following a “marked loss” in 2011. Pelikan is also reportedly considering closing eight of its 13 production facilities within the next three years. OPI indicates that 100 jobs will be cut at Pelikan’s production and distribution facility near Hanover, Germany, and 60 employees will be let go at the Hardcopy Production division in Switzerland. According to Pelikan’s website, the headquarters of Pelikan Hardcopy Production AG’s Technology Center is in Wetzikon near Zurich,
Switzerland, and Pelikan Hardcopy Production employs about 2,400 people worldwide. Pelikan reported that its first-half sales decreased in Germany and Europe due to weak sales of printer consumables and the strategic decision to end distribution of OEM and private-label printer consumables and to concentrate on its branded business in the Hardcopy sector. Pelikan indicated that it expected to see lower sales in the second half of 2011 as well. The company reported that it was working on a restructuring plan for its German operations. Presumably, the job cuts are part of these restructuring efforts. It should also be noted that Pelikan has faced several patent-infringement lawsuits filed by printer OEMs including

nkCycle, Inc. announced that it has established a new distribution center in Southern California. Based in Ventura, Cali., the new distribution center will allow InkCycle to expand product availability and provide faster fulfillment of orders for wholesale customers on the West Coast. The new facility will handle the West Coast needs for remanufactured inkjet and toner cartridges built in the Lenexa, Kan., facility. Delivery times for those located on the West Coast will be dramatically reduced. This will also improve delivery times for blind shipments needed by InkCycle dealers to expedite product to the West Coast, no matter where the dealer is located. “Our West Coast Distribution Center will cut transit times and shipping costs for all of our dealers, no matter where they are located in the US,” said Carl Little, vice president of dealer sales. “We look forward to providing stellar delivery services to our current dealer base as well as allowing new dealers a more effective distribution program for those located on the West Coast. Allowing our dealers the flexibility to ship directly to customers, and being able to reach many dealers who previously received two and three day delivery times, allows every dealership the opportunity to sell InkCycle quality.”

Lexmark named an MPS Leader in 2011 IDC MarketScape study
L
exmark International, Inc. has been positioned a Leader, according to IT research firm IDC’s recent MPS MarketScape report, which analyzes the competitive fitness of companies providing managed print services (MPS). IDC’s multivendor study showed that Lexmark earned high marks on its MPS strategy and capabilities, particularly in the areas of customer service, operational execution and go-to-market approach. Lexmark’s global operational capabilities, industry specific knowledge, expertise in streamlining business processes and focus on helping customers to ‘Print Less’ differentiates the company’s MPS offerings in the marketplace. Lexmark’s MPS strategy is helping global organizations across a broad range of industries – Manufacturing, Financial Services, Retail, Public Sector, Healthcare, Education and others – to become more efficient, effective and differentiate themselves among the competition. In fact, within the last 24 months, Lexmark competed for and won 23 new MPS contracts with companies listed on either the Global 500 or Fortune 500 list. “A key strategy success factor identified from this study is the business process and vertical expertise to craft
the best combination of technology and services to meet real customer requirements,” said Holly Muscolino, research director, Hardcopy Peripherals: Software and Services. “Lexmark has demonstrated competency in developing sophisticated business process solutions.” “Many of the world’s leading companies turn to and trust Lexmark to manage their output and optimize their critical business processes,” said Marty Canning, Lexmark executive vice president and president of Imaging Solutions and Services. “While the competition bases its MPS models around removing and consolidating devices, our focus is on making our customers more effective and productive by optimizing their infrastructure, eliminating work through proactive services and speeding up their business by transforming business processes.”

is also growing exponentially at college bookstores nationwide; the company announced many new universities over the past year that now offer the ink refills to students and faculty. Ink-O-Dem stores can refill 146 different inkjet cartridges including the latest cartridges from HP and Canon. “The 50 percent or greater cost savings to consumers, students and small businesses are tremendous. Make no mistake, this is a big draw. In an uncertain economy where many families are struggling just to make ends meet, people want more value for their money without sacrificing quality. Ink-O-Dem fulfills this need, and does so in a way that respects the environment. This is why we have had explosive growth throughout this year,” said Harry Nicodem, president and CEO of Ink-O-Dem.
ILG Announces “Color Certified” Cartridge Certification
I
nternational Laser Group (ILG) announced a new cartridge-certification system called “Color Certified.” It sounds as if the program has two main components: the color toner formulation and various testing protocols. ILG’s press release states that Color Certified cartridges use “an exclusive color formulation” co-developed by ILG and a leading component-manufacturing partner. “This proprietary formulation improves color quality resulting in smooth color transitions and vivid output resembling OEM color,” asserts the company. ILG says that its cartridges are also designed with robust components to avoid wear over the cartridge life.ILG’s testing protocols include yield testing using the ISO 19758 testing standard, environmental testing in three different environments, and production-run testing. With the new certification system, ILG has introduced a new logo that will be placed on its HP JUMBO cartridges and on other HP toner cartridges that have met the certification criteria. This is similar to ILG’s introduction of the MPS Certified logo last summer. It seems that ILG is engaged in a push to increase its share of the color market.

The P4014 printer does not support the use of the extended life toner cartridge as it will not fit into the P4014. The P4015/P4515 models have a numerical keypad. The main difference is the print speeds of each model. The P4014 is rated at 45 letter pages per minute. The P4015 at 52 pages per minute and the P4515 tops out at 62 pages per minute. These models were not without some problems that might have showed up immediately or after the printers were used for awhile. The first one might have been when trying to print envelopes. The toner would not always fuse correctly either smearing or just flaking off the envelopes. There were only two fuser modes to use. Another problem that would show up was when printing from trays 2, 3 or 4. The printer would say processing and will start to ramp up like it would during a normal print job. But the printer would not pick up the paper and complete the job. The display would go back to idle and no error would be generated on the display or on the event log. Verify by printing from Tray 1. Another issue was when the maintenance due message came up and when you tried to reset it the ability to do

so was not there. These issues were all firmware related. Upgrading to the level of 4.060.7 or higher would help to correct these problems. There would now be five fuser modes to choose from. No more problems printing from tray 2 as well. Metrofuser has a one stop solution for this as well as a performance upgrade. The formatters we sell as replacements have the latest firmware already loaded and will upgrade your 4014 or 4015 to a 4515 printer capable of printing at 62 pages per minute!!! It’s just a plug and play upgrade to fix some issues and increase your print speeds at the same time. Remove the formatter cage, move any memory modules over to the new formatter and install and you will now have a 62 page per minute printer. The P4014 printer is now capable of also using the extended life cartridges without getting errors. There are some modifications that will have to be made to do so. The top cover can be replaced with RM1-4552 (P4015/ P4515) or the upper cartridge guide can be removed from the existing cover. This is the plastic piece located directly above the cartridge on the toner access panel. The cover should be removed to perform this procedure. There are some tabs on the extended cartridge that have to be removed or cut off to allow the extended life cartridge to slide completely into the printer. This is only needed if you intend to use the extended life cartridges, which of course is not required. There are some mechanical problems in these models that we have solutions for as well. The fuser drive gears located in the center of the printer on the inside frame are now available as a kit. The
replacement procedure is very similar to the 4200 series fuser swing plate. These models do not have the swing or pivoting gear but a solid drive train of 5 gears which drive the fuser. These gears are available as KITGEARP4O14/P4015 from Metrofuser. A piece of plastic in the drum drive area is breaking as well. The collar that meshes with the frame in the cartridge area and is attached to the toner access cover link arm is breaking and is now available as a replacement assembly which includes the big gear, collar and link arm.

Kodak Introduces New Kodak 30 and 30XL Inkjet Cartridges in ESP C310 All-in-One
K
odak has announced a new set of inkjet cartridges. The move is a bold one for the firm, as its model until now has been to use one set of cartridges for all its products. K o d a k originally launched its all-in-one line with the Kodak 10 black and color tanks. At the beginning of 2010, Kodak replaced these with three new tanks—the Kodak 10B and 10XL black tanks and the Kodak 10C color tank. The new tanks were backward-compatible with devices that had taken the original 10 black and 10 color tanks but offered a higher cost of printing than the firm’s original tanks, and Kodak stopped shipping the older tanks.

epson InTroduces e-paper plaTForms For IndusTrIal applIcaTIons
Seiko Epson Corporation announced that it has begun shipping industrial electronic paper display platforms. These platforms consist of electronic paper (e-paper) display microcontrollers with integrated firmware that controls the basic device functions. Customers can combine these platforms with an electronic paper display to easily develop
their own industrial e- paper products, even if they lack advanced information about the unique driving schemes used for e-paper. Epson’s e-paper platform series now consists of the S1C17F57, a microcontroller for small segmented displays, and the new S1D13T03, a timing microcontroller for small, activematrix e-paper displays*. Samples of the S1D13T03 will begin shipping in late January 2012. Epson plans to continue expanding the lineup and, in March, will begin shipping samples of a new microcontroller for medium-sized activematrix e-paper displays. Electronic paper displays (EPDs) are superior to other display technologies in several important respects: they display text that is as sharp and easy to read as print on paper, they use no power while displaying an image, and, because they do not need a backlight, they are thin and lightweight. Given these advantages, e-paper displays are expected to rapidly supplant current electronic shelf tags, digital signage, advertising displays, and point of purchase displays, most of which use either paper or liquid crystal technology. However, e-paper driving requires specific technical knowledge for optimizing the display control for individual applications. The need for e-paper-specific technical understanding multiplies the difficulty of product development and implementation for product planners and engineers not familiar with e-paper. Epson has vast experience and resources that it will make available to its customers to significantly support the integration of its electronic paper solution. “Epson has a storehouse of knowledge and technology from a decade’s worth of e-paper research and development,” explains Masayuki Morozumi, executive vice president at Epson. “We have accumulated business experience, know-how, and intellectual property as a market share leader*2 in EPD microcontrollers for e-readers and are drawing on these to provide customers with the industrial e-paper platforms they need to maximize the performance of their e-paper displays, whatever their application and environment.”Epson can recommend the best platforms for any e-paper application based on strong partnerships with electronic paper display manufacturers and industry leaders, such as E Ink Holdings, Inc. and Pervasive Displays, Inc. (PDI).

lexmark X560
toner toner Cartridges Cartridges By: Mike Josiah and the Technical Staff at Uninet Imaging
The lexmark x560 engine is a multi function 31 ppm black and 20 ppm color engine that runs at 600 dpi (2400dpi image quality). The first page out is stated to be under 11 seconds and the printer runs off a 400 mhz processor. The memory comes standard at 384mb and is expandable to 1.4gb. These machines can print, scan, fax, copy and duplex.
T
he chips on these cartridges need to be replaced each cycle. There are LY (Starter) cartridges and HY cartridges available. A LY cartridge cannot be made into a HY version as there are a set of gears in HY cartridges not present in Ly cartridge. HY cartridges use a second toner hopper based in the drum half of the cartridge. This hopper is present in the LY versions, but the necessary gears to move the toner are not. These cartridges have a chip that must be replaced each cycle. In addition, they also have gears on the supply hopper(s) that must be set correctly for the cartridge to work. The printers ship with a set of starter cartridges. Both the colors and the black are all rated for 4,000 pages. Current Machines based on the X560 engine are: Lexmark X560n Lexmark X560dn [ 28 ] NCN
the cartridges used in these machines are as follows: 0X560A2KG Black LY Cartridge (4000 pages) 0X560A2CG Cyan LY Cartridge (4000 pages) 0X560A2MG Magenta LY Cartridge (4000 pages) 0X560A2YG Yellow LY Cartridge (4000 pages) Fig. 1 0X560H2CG Cyan HY Cartridge (10,000 pages) $412.65 List 0X560H2MG Magenta HY Cartridge (10,000 pages)$412.65 List 0X560H2YG Yellow HY Cartridge
(10,000 pages) $412.65 List 0X560H2KG Black HY Cartridge (10,000 pages) $278.25 List As you can see, these are extremely profitable cartridges to do. These cartridges use both toner and developer in the cartridges. This system is a little different so we are including the cartridge/ printer theory here. Figure 1 shows the basic layout of the cartridges as they relate to the printer and also list the steps used in the printing process. These steps are covered in more detail below. In the first stage, the Primary Charge Roller places a uniform negative DC voltage on the OPC drum surface. The amount of the negative DC voltage placed on the drum is controlled by the printer’s intensity setting. The PCR cleaning roller removes any toner or paper dust from the PCR. See Figure 2

In the second stage, each color’s laser beam is fired onto a set of fixed mirrors and then to the rotating mirror (called the scanner). As the mirror rotates, the beams are reflected into a set of focusing lenses. The beams then strike the drums surface, reducing the negative charge and leaving a latent electrostatic image on the drum. The areas where the lasers did not strike the drum will retain the higher negative charge. See Figures 3 & 4 The third or developing stage is where the toner is developed on the drum by the developing section (or supply chamber), which contains the toner and developer particles. The toner is moved from the hoppers by a series of agitators into the developer section where the augers and magnetic roller are located. The toner is brought out to the drum by the magnetic roller. The toner is also held onto and attracted to the magnetic roller by a negative DC bias voltage. This voltage is controlled by the printer’s intensity setting and causes either more or less toner to be attracted by the developer roller. This in turn will either increase or decrease the print density. The amount of toner on the magnetic roller is controlled by the doctor blade, which uses pressure to keep the amount of toner on the roller constant. See Figure 5 As the laser exposed areas of the OPC Drum approach the developer roller, the toner particles are attracted to the drum’s surface due to the opposite voltage potentials of the toner, and laser exposed areas of the OPC drum. See Figure 6 The fourth stage is the transfer stage. This is where there are some large differences from monochrome printers and also from other color lasers. In the Primary transfer stage the transfer rollers which are located directly opposite each OPC drum, place a positive DC bias charge on the back of the Transfer Belt. Each toner cartridge has a separate transfer charge roller. As the paper moves through the machine, the image is transferred from the drum directly to the paper. This process is repeated for each color cartridge in the following order: Yellow, Magenta, Cyan, and Black. See Figure 7 The paper separates from the transfer belt as the belt turns back down to start the process again. The static charge on the back of the paper is decreased with static charge eliminator. This helps stabilize the paper feed, and also prevents toner flares (spots) under low temperature and low humidity conditions. See Figure 8 In the fifth stage, the image is then fused onto the paper by the fuser assembly. The fuser Assembly is comprised of the upper heating assembly and lower pressure roller. The lower pressure roller presses the page up into the upper heating assembly which then melts the toner into the paper. This heating assembly is based on older technology. It uses a heat lamp and a pressure roller assembly and not the ceramic heaters that many machines now use. See Figure 9

OPC Drum Cleaning: The drum is cleaned after the image is transferred to the paper by the wiper blade. This part is fairly standard; the wiper blade scrapes the toner off the drum, and the recovery blade guides it into the waste chamber. These machines also have an erase lamp to remove any residual charges from the drum and allow the wiper blade to clean better. See Figure 10 Cartridge troubleshooting will be covered at the end of this article. Supplies Required: Dedicated Lexmark X560 color toner (HY or LY)

The fifth Session of ICRRA Classroom session, sponsored by Static Control Components (SCC) was held at the same venue, Lavelle Hall, Chancery Hotel, at Lavelle Road, Bangalore on the 7th of January. The Classroom Session 5 had Hands-on training on the High End HP LaserJet 16A and 64A Mono Laser Cartridges. The popularity and the need for this training can be gauged from the very fact that we got people from as far as Maldives and Ludhiana who took the time out and spent a lot of money to attend the training. While Gurjasjeet Singh from Akal Computers came to learn specifically the 16A Cartridge, Abdul Awwal of MESCO (Maldives Electronic Services Co. Pvt. Ltd.) came all the way from Maldives to generally learn
better manufacturing techniques. Both of them were happy with the training and felt that the effort and money spent was worth it. The need for the hands on training is acutely felt by

I
n the beginning of 2011, one of my close associates asked me “How would this year be for our industry?” My reply was: “It is quite tough”. But, if we can retain our market share, the going would be good. I can also see the consolidation taking place in our industry and this would take us towards an organized growth.

A lot has happened globally in the last two years. In India, entry of new players and international raw material manufacturers in this field put increased pressure on price and consequently, the quality has gone down. The data available points towards a growth of 25 percent, but does this reflect our growth in true sense of the
word. I seriously doubt it. The quality of components has gone down by 50 percent, so we have more uses of components. According to the current UNO reports, world economy is on the edge of yet another recession. In 2012, it is expected to diminish to 2.6 percent from 4 percent in 2010. China will go down to 9 percent from 10.4 percent and Indian economy

The journey started way back in 1985, when the brain child behind the company nirmal bhansali see the future in computer industry and started Trading in spool and wide width ribbons backed by 13 year experience in readymade garment and pVc profile industry. In 1988 he went i nto manufacturing and introduced first time branded cassette cartridge ribbons in the Indian market. and in very first month of production company got break through with nIc (national Informatics centre) a govt. organization to supply cassette ribbons about rs 1million. Today, hcr Info consumables private limited is one of the major companies which supplies raw materials to different companies. “we have too much contribution in the imaging industry and helped the small and new players to become big in industry. Today 15 brands are supported by bhansali group companies to supply good raw material and components whether it is prodot, JetTec, Imagestar, abee, desmat, royal print, amI, etc.,” said, Bhansali.
is expected to drop to 7.7 percent from 9 percent. In the year 2012, the industry would find itself in a do or die situation. Chinese government reports are now focusing more on developing nations, including India According to a recent Commerce workshop of officials belonging to key ministries and departments in the Indian Government, the trade forecast says that China could account for 75 percent of India’s manufacturing in the coming years. This would be an escalation from the present figure of 26 percent. This is quite alarming and the challenges and crises that the Indian industry is about to face can be imagined. But, every cloud has a silver lining and I am a firm believer that every crisis imbibes an opportunity to grow in terms of productivity as well as
efficiency. All we need is a focused and strategic planning. Firstly, we need a strong association to represent us with policy makers and also to educate the users. Unfortunately, this has not happened till now due to varied individual views and differences. There is a dire need to understand that individual growth is dependent upon the development of industry as a whole. Secondly, our industry needs to be more organized, which I see happening in the coming year. Thirdly, I feel that cooperation among co-manufacturers is vital for the growth of industry as a whole. For instance, in India, we have several cellular service providers including Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, Aircel, Reliance, Tata, etc. All
of them are big competitors but in terms of pricing or policy matters with government, they all come together as an industry. We are all a witness of the booming cellular industry in India. We should take heed from this industry and progress towards the same goals. Fourthly, we should strive to make our presence felt globally. Indian manufacturers need to broaden their vision, so that not only one but at least a handful of companies make themselves visible on the global map. If Indian manufacturers or remanufacturing companies make their presence felt on the global map, our industry can really move ahead. Lastly, there is a great need to focus on Research and Development. Once I was negotiating with one of the leading global manufacturer. The price range of their cartridges varied from US$6.5 to 11. The reason for price difference is simple. The top-end quality has all brand new components and as the price range descended, combinations of new and refurbished components were used. Here, Research and Development plays a crucial role in matching and selection of components. If we focus on Research and Development, we will be able to choose the right combination of components to provide perfect solutions. This is the perfect mantra for growth and this in turn can pave the way for our global presence. A lot of this is already happening at ‘Spink’ in this regard and more results would be visible soon. A few days ago, one more question was posed at me. Can we supply compatible cartridges at US$ 5 to 6 as done by Chinese companies? My answer is ………. Yes! HOW TO SAVE INK CARTRIDGES? Have you just bought a new ink cartridge and yet it is already nearly empty? Have you just printed a couple of pages but with the amount of ink that you have, it looks like it has printed a rim already? Did you just install the ink but it look like it has been used already?
T
his is a common scenario, especially for offices and business establishments where it is a must to print several documents. This is also common and frequently happens in homes where everyone loves to print photos and other memorabilia taken from their digital camera or cellular phones. There are unlimited things that can be printed from a printer. It is such a waste of time running out of ink when you needed it most or when you change ink cartridges from time to time. New printer ink cartridges are expensive. And if you have to print often for your home business, it becomes a frequent expenditure too. But there are several things you can do to minimize the cost of printer ink cartridges (besides printing less stuff). And while you’re saving money, you’re helping save the planet too because most of these tips for saving money on printer ink cartridges will also help create a more eco-friendly home office. If you’re the DIY (do-it-yourself) type, buy a printer cartridge ink refill kit and refill your own. The type of kit will vary from printer to printer. And it takes a careful hand to refill a cartridge correctly without mess. These days, computer printers are sold cheaper but the ink cartridges are so expensive. It usually costs almost the same as the printer. In order to save on costs of cartridges, innovations are made. One of their solutions is the use of compatible
[ 42 ] NCN
cartridges. These are cartridges that are made to meet the quality of the ink produced by the printer manufacturer. It costs cheaper, which is almost half the price of the original inks. The output that it produces is almost the same quality as the original ones. These inks are sold on most printer and ink stores. Another option on saving ink cartridges is the use of refill on the original cartridges. You can buy refill kits and refill it yourself (there are several do-it-yourself refill kits) or you can also request technicians from the ink stores to do it for you. In case you decide to DIY, make sure that you follow the instructions very well. There are instances that when it is not done properly, bubbles are formed inside the cartridges and the quality of the output is not that good. You should also check that the cartridges are still in good condition and contact points are still intact. The latest innovation made for the printers is the aftermarket inks like the continuous ink system. In order
to avail this, you need to have a modification made on your printer. The modification process will allow your printer to use external tanks that has more ink contents. Aside from the usual to cartridges, the continuous ink has 4 tanks. It has black, cyan, magenta and yellow. These inks will combine during the printing process. The inks are evenly used when printing and in case you ran out you can easily changed whichever runs empty on these colors. In addition, continuous ink system requires very minimal maintenance. Printing is no longer expensive these days. You can now enjoy the chance to print whatever items that you wanted to get hold off. There are no more reasons of saving too much and not enjoy the pictures that you wanted to keep. For your ink cartridges needs, you can always ask for the other options.
