Editor’s Desk Dear Readers, Printing technology is continuing to develop for offset processes, but the major developments are taking place in digital printing – and particularly inkjet, which is enjoying major investments in R&D on printheads, inks, and finishing systems. There are also significant developments in enabling workflow technology – for all processes and substrates, with much emphasis on paper to improve the quality of waterbased inkjet printing. The developments are changing the relative cost positions of digital and offset printing. Generally the economic crossover point is getting higher and this will fuel further adoption of digital technology, at the expense of the established litho, flexo and gravure alternatives. Digital printing will continue to grow in most print sectors across the world. Mono webfed electrophotography is being superseded by full-color inkjet; but despite this competition, the volume and value of electrophotography will continue to rise as color applications grow. Innovative users will find more applications and niches to exploit the advantages of digital – some at the expense of offset printing, but also by opening totally new opportunities.

Metrofuser Offers Guide to Samsung Printers to Educate Service Organizations

M

etrofuser announced the publication of a Guide to Samsung Printers and Fusers for Service Companies.HP Agreed to Acquire Samsung Printer Business for $1.05 Billion in 2016 and promises to reinvent and replace service-intensive copiers with superior multifunction printing. Samsung’s printer business brings a compelling intellectual property portfolio of more than 6,500 printing patents and a world-class workforce that includes nearly 1,300 researchers and engineers. It is estimated Samsung represents only 4% of the laser printer market in 2015. With so few devices in the field compared to HP, we believe very few service companies will be ready for this transition technologically or logistically. Companies servicing printers will need to get familiar with Samsung devices, parts and skus over the next six months.Metrofuser prepared an introduction to Samsung products that will help service companies get familiar with Samsung’s current Business Class color, monochrome and multifunction devices. The Samsung product line will likely be the platform for the HP pivot away from some Canon products. The guide also includes a Samsung fuser assembly look

up with part numbers and “Street” prices. We believe the transition will go beyond the A3 device class so we included a broader list of machines.

HP’s Acquisition of Samsung’s Printer Business – Checkmate or Castle?

P

hotizo Group today announced the availability of a new 54-page report on the rationale and industry impact of HP’s acquisition of Samsung’s printer business announced on September 12, 2016.This report initially looks at possible reasons that Samsung Electronics decided to sell their printer business given that it is a known fact that printers where very strategic to them and they set very ambitious goals to become a leader in the market. Samsung’s current 5% share in the printer market, economic conditions in South Korea, and the costly problems with the Galaxy Note 7 mobile phone are all discussed in detail as possible reasons for selling their printer business. The

report then examines possible reasons why HP decided to purchase Samsung’s printer business including laser technology access, 6500 laser and inkjet technology patents, access to 1300 skilled hardware, software, and firmware engineers, a production facility in Seoul, and incremental revenue and profits from the Samsung product line to at least partially offset most recent declines in HP’s printer revenue and profits. Will the acquisition be successful? HP has a good track record of acquiring printer companies and successfully growing those businesses especially when they are allowed to operate a bit independently. The acquisition of Indigo in 2001 is a great example of a business that successfully grew after being acquired by HP. The report addresses that challenge that HP will face including how to integrate the Samsung product line into the HP product line particularly from a channel standpoint. Of the 16 new A3 Laser MFPs announced on September 12, 2016, 13 are based on Samsung print engines. The six new low end monochrome single function and multifunction printers announced by HP on October 5, 2016 are based on Canon, not Samsung printer engines. The report talks about how much the Samsung A3 product line, at least what exists today, will help HP’s efforts to break into the Copier/BTA channel especially given the positioning of HP’s PageWide A3 products. The report then addresses the impact of this acquisition on the industry. First and foremost, the balance of power between two market leaders, Canon and HP, has now shifted in the favor of HP, now that HP has acquired a laser printer product line and laser/inkjet related patents. Now HP’s product breadth is as broad or perhaps broader than Canon’s. HP’s A4 and A3 PageWide product line is expected to be very disruptive in terms of price/performance, perhaps more so against established A3 Laser MFP providers including Canon. Will HP continue to purchase print engines from Canon after the latest round of low end products announced on October 3, 2016 now that they have their own laser technology?

pr o d u ct r o u nd u p Imagine Express Increases Capacity by a Factor of 10 with New EFI VUTEk HS125 Pro Inkjet Press

E

lectronics For Imaging, Inc. announced that Imagine! Express, a subsidiary of Minneapolis-based Imagine! Print Solutions, has purchased an EFI VUTEk HS125 Pro hybrid roll/flatbed inkjet press to increase its production capacity. The new, 3.2-meter wide, high-volume UV-inkjet device replaced an older-model EFI VUTEk printer. “Although we did our due diligence before making a decision, in the end we chose to stay with VUTEk because we know the ins and outs of the machines – their quality and reliability – and because EFI has taken the product family to a new level with the HS125 Pro,” said Imagine!Express President Mike Lecus. “It’s a strong, high quality production press that will increase our capacity by a factor of 10.” Imagine! Express’s previous VUTEk printer produced seven to eight boards per hour. The new press will produce 80 to 90 boards per hour at the quality level customers require, and has maximum speeds up to 125 boards per hour.“We have grown over 300% since we were acquired by Imagine! four years ago,” Lecus stated. “Not only will this increase capacity, but it also increase the run lengths we can economically produce. And importantly, it will allow us to bring most, if not all, of our outsourced work back in house.”

Static Control First to Market with Odyssey Cartridge Sealing Toner Packs for use in HP M252 Cartridges

S

tatic Control has recently launched Odyssey cartridge sealing toner packs, a unique, first-to-market solution, that rounds out the offering for remanufacturing HP’s CF400 series cartridges used in M252 and M277 printers. This Jet Intelligence cartridge series introduced several features such as advanced, smaller chips and a new toner delivery method. Odyssey cartridge sealing toner pack has an OEM-like fit and function. Filled precisely with the optimal amount of toner, the pack also acts as a seal to prevent cartridge leaking. In a similar way to the OEM, when the seal is broken in the printer, it acts as a toner agitator to help improve flow. This eliminates the occurrence of premature starvation common when using the “drill-and-fill” method popular among remanufacturers. Toner packs are available for A cartridges, with X toner packs to be released soon. Traditional bottled toner is also available. Last year, Static Control was first to market with replacement chips for the M252 cartridges. Along with chips and toner, an Odyssey drum, wiper blade, end felts, foams, sealing blades and replacement end plates are available. This provides everything needed to successfully remanufacture these cartridges with OEM-comparable image density and page yield. For remanufacturers who have difficulty locating the hard-to-find, expensive empty, a non-OEM compatible replacement cartridge is also available. These cartridges provide high quality print performance in all printing conditions, such as low and high humidity.

RemaxWorld Summit The crowd was the largest seen and the presentations were cutting edge. But what caught everyone’s attention was the unplanned debate over the long running issue that has crippled the printing consumables Aftermarket Industry for 3 years. The 158 registered speakers and delegates continue to discuss the matters raised at the 10th annual RemaxWorld Summit held in Zhuhai, China on October 12, 2016. Fifteen industry experts from the USA, Russia, Romania, Mexico, Germany, the Netherlands and China shared insights on new products, new technologies, legal issues & market trends. Dr Richard Yu (pictured right), founding CEO of Suzhou GoldenGreen (SGT)—which recently went public on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange— has developed a solution where used drums can be recoated allowing them to be reused in refurbished cartridges. Yu claimed it’s the best non-infringing solution to what is known as the Canon “dongle gear” lawsuits. SGT is the second largest OPC drum manufacturer in the world, behind Canon. Scores of companies have been sued by Canon over the last 3 years for infringing its patent during the cartridge remanufacturing process. Yu says SGT’s recoating of used drums is permissible repair, and Canon has not argued with him. Another Summit presenter, US Patent attorney Merritt Blakeslee (pictured left),

jumped to his feet and said Canon was wrong. He argued replacing worn out drums is permissible repair. Blakeslee said, in his opinion, and the opinion of others that know best, Canon’s patent that blocks the permissible repair of the OPC drum in the cartridge should be overturned. In turn, delegates took the “open microphone session” to share their concerns over doing battle with Canon. The Summit theme, on China’s dominance in the US$80 billion global imaging industry, had Mito’s CEO Mary Ouyang and Cartridge World’s Steve Weedon updating the audience on the significant strides China is taking. OuYang reviewed the development history of printing consumables industry in Zhuhai. Weedon from Cartridge World explained the important role of China in global market. Blakeslee shared his legal expertise about GEOs in the USA and how foreign companies engaged in printing consumables can enter that market. Graham Galliford analysed China’s Global Dominance in the development of Toner, and Mr. Ding Li from Apex talked about the Chip technology development. Tricia Judge from I-ITC offered advice as to how to win against legal challenges. Aldo de Smedt from GFK shared the successful market strategies in 2016. Thilo Lutzeler, the CEO of Drivve reminded the audience that mobile printing is an innovative technology that has combined two kinds of technologies: mobility and printing. David Gibbons, Director of RT Media, commented, “The Summit is always very successful—and this year is no exception.” RT Media plans to run Summits in Africa and the Americas as well as China in 2017.

Remanufacturing the Samsung ProXpress M3080 M4080 MLT-D201 Toner Cartridge By Mike Josiah and the Technical Staff at Uninet

T

he Samsung Pro Xpress M3080 series of printers are based on a 42 ppm engine with a maximum resolution of 1200 x 600 dpi. (1200 x 1200 enhanced). The first page out is stated to be under 6.0 seconds. Depending on the model number, other options/specs are available. The MLT-D201L/S cartridges do not have a drum cover, and come new with a piece of heavy paper with a thin sheet of foam on the inside. The protective sheet is held in place by a shipping lock that holds the PCR roller away from the drum. This lock helps prevent flat spots that can occur during storage. See Figures A, B & C

It is very important however that all three places on each end cap be drilled and screwed back in place. If this is not done, print defects such as banding will occur. See Figure’s 1 & 2

there is a slot for an optical sensor but in out M3080 machine this slot is empty. It is unknown if Samsung plans to put them in later on but to be safe the labels should be put back in place when remanufacturing the cartridge. Print Firms Approaches to Digital Will Change in the Coming Years With new technologies and the use of different substrates, it just may happen that digital printing is the best decision to make for your next printing project.

T

here has been much technological advancement in digital printing since its introduction almost 20 years ago. However, there are still misconstrued beliefs regarding the scope of capabilities of a digital press. From a graphic design firm point of view, we would like to discuss some ways why digital printing can be utilized to make certain projects successful and profitable. The demand for diverse types of marketing materials has pushed the recent success of digital printing and continues to drive developments. Since digital printing does not require the use of plates or mechanical setups, digital printing is ideal for many project types. With new technologies and the use of different substrates, it just may happen that digital printing is the best decision to make for your next printing project. How well do your products stand

38

out against the competition? Is your brand identity clearly represented? Do your printed materials, including packaging, point of sale and brochures enhance your company’s image and look as good as they could? How your products and related materials look can have both immediate and far-reaching impact on how they—and your company— are perceived by your customers. At GSB, our designs are created using knowledge-based research and sound strategies. Call it “informed imagination.” The results are targeted creative solutions that provide appealing and effective answers to your business objectives. Getting you noticed means making sure you and your products are presented in the best possible light. Check our portfolio and see for yourself what we’ve done to help

clients in the Northeast and beyond. In 2015, digital print accounts for 13.9% of all print and printed packaging in value terms, but just 2.5% of total world volume. Not only that, but the offset to digital transition is accelerating however; in 2020 digital will be 17.4% of value and 3.4% of all print and printed packaging volume. Digital is growing because it can offer advantages that offset print cannot provide. Variable data in transactional and direct mail was introduced in the 1970s. As color digital presses came to market the initial drivers were for low cost, short runs and quick turnaround. As more companies used the technology, new applications and business models developed for print-on-demand,

Key Benefits • Turnaround - Small quantities can be printed quickly, this allows for high impact short Point-Of-Sale runs to promote products. • Cost - Spend less over long term with less waste. Only print what you need and only print what is relevant now. • Color - Sharp colors remain consistent through the entire run, and a larger color gamut is available. Spot Pantone colors can now be used, keeping a brand consistency that is important. • Corrections – Quick corrections to text can be made when needed, which helps to avoid costly mistakes. • Customization - Individual pieces can be personalized allowing for the new market trend of selling directly to the consumer. • Comps- Digitally printed comps can supply

short-run books; and for inkjet printed signage, where digital technology replaced analogue. There are also new markets opening up – such as photo books and photo products – where digital print linked to online ordering has enabled a multi-billion dollar market to flourish.

Key factors that will determine the future: Printing technology is continuing to develop for offset processes, but the major developments are taking place in digital printing – and particularly inkjet, which is enjoying major investments in R&D on printheads, inks, and finishing systems. There are also significant developments in enabling workflow technology – for all processes and substrates, with much emphasis on paper to improve the quality of water-based inkjet printing.

40

accurate packaging mock-ups on the actual substrate so you get a great idea of final product. These comps can also be displayed at trade shows before the package is printed. • Substrates- Format sizes are expanding and more substrates are available including non-paper materials. Static cling and other materials for glass doors and freezer doors allow more versatile possibilities in the marketing arsenal at a lower price. The new options that are available for digital printing, the various types of digital presses, and the increasing number of advancements being made in the field are offering companies strategic developments in their printing possibilities. These possibilities can mean time and money savings to many companies if they take advantage.

The developments are changing the relative cost positions of digital and offset printing. Generally the economic crossover point is getting higher and this will fuel further adoption of digital technology, at the expense of the established litho, flexo and gravure alternatives. As technology and prices change, this model is a useful tool for companies to select the most appropriate technology for their particular markets. It is also useful for equipment suppliers to determine how their technology fits in to the supply market.

Applications and Technology Digital printing will continue to grow in most print sectors across the world. Mono webfed electrophotography is being superseded by fullcolor inkjet; but despite this competition, the volume and value of electrophotography will

continue to rise as color applications grow. Innovative users will find more applications and niches to exploit the advantages of digital – some at the expense of offset printing, but also by opening totally new opportunities. Digital print can incorporate variability that makes it more effective than the static alternative. Users of digital print are innovating, and exploring new ways to offer novel functions and features to print buyers that are valued and sell at a premium. The key drivers and barriers to the adoption of digital printing – including factors such as run lengths, improvements in technology, setup costs, and environmental benefits.

Finally The choice between digital and offset is not always an either-or decision. As many print suppliers employ both offset and digital as part of their production capacity the two technologies can be complementary. There is greater flexibility for planners to put short runs and quick turnaround on the digital presses, with longer runs staying on their offset equipment. This can improve the overall efficiency of the print shop greatly. It was the innovative value added to these jobs by its new digital equipment that is allowing the print service provider to differentiate itself, becoming a valued supplier to the customer, rather than one that is simply competing with rivals on price. The digital work commands high margins meaning that overall the account is very profitable.

“We believe strong long-term relationships can be established with clients” Itone strives to deliver the same quality and performance as the OEM’s at a substantial savings to customers and considered as the most effective alternative to the expensive OEM toners, as well as the flood of sub-par, unreliable toners and cartridges available on the market today. In an interaction with Sandeep Sanghvi, Managing Director, Itone (India) Pvt. Ltd. about the itone brand and future plans. How Itone brand is performing in the Indian imaging market? We feel we are doing pretty well considering the fact that we sell our products across most of the major states in the country. How do you see the Indian market for cartridge remanufacturing and refilling industry? As the Indian market moves up more in the value chain, the demand for quality and superior products has been increasing. We are a country of 1.34 billion people. I only see increase in demand. The aftermarket imaging industry has just scratched the surface in terms of market potential. In comparison to major print vendors how effective is your aftermarket solution? We offer compatible materials as well as components and raw materials for copiers, printers and multifunctional devices. We believe in transparency and fair business and do not make empty declarations and promises. We are constantly improving our services and internal procedures. We are continuously increasing our product range to offer the best solutions to our clients. For us, our clients are our partners and we value relationships. We support our clients and do not compete with them. We do not sell retail or to end users.

According to you what might the evolution path look like in India as well as globally? We see a convergence in the A4 and A3 segments. We strongly believe color is the future and future prints will be moreover color. We also will see the Indian Imaging

Industry as a whole getting more organized. The domestic Indian market still has a lot of growth potential. There is a lot of export potential from India due to the high skill levels available and lower labor costs. But we feel this is sometime away once the Indian imaging industry evolves and matures further. Globally, we should see more mergers and acquisitions taking place. What are the major challenges before you in increasing sales and how are you addressing these challenges? What we have seen and experienced is that clients are not being given correct information by unscrupulous traders and vendors who are just trying to make quick money. This has eroded customer perception of the aftermarket imaging industry. We strongly believe in honesty and education; and by sharing information, we believe strong long-term relationships can be established with clients. Can we look forward to any more surprises in the near future for the itone brand? Let us all together create an open and transparent marketplace. It is fair for the business and good for the customers. What are your company’s long-term goals? To offer our products to more clients every year and increasing our product range continuously to offer the best solutions to our clients. At the same time, to continuously improve our services and internal procedures. What are the USP of Itone brands? Trust, Integrity and Commitment.
