Dear Readers, Printing technology is continuing to develop for offset processes, but the major developments are taking place in digital printing – and particularly inkjet, which is enjoying major investments in R&D on printheads, inks, and finishing systems. There are also significant developments in enabling workflow technology – for all processes and substrates, with much emphasis on paper to improve the quality of water-based inkjet printing. The developments are changing the relative cost positions of digital and offset printing. Generally the economic crossover point is getting higher and this will fuel further adoption of digital technology, at the expense of the established litho, flexo and gravure alternatives. Digital printing will continue to grow in most print sectors across the world. Mono webfed electrophotography is being superseded by full-colour inkjet; but despite this competition, the volume and value of electrophotography will continue to rise as colour applications grow. Innovative users will find more applications and niches to exploit the advantages of digital – some at the expense of offset printing, but also by opening totally new opportunities.

umanglam International, founded in 1996 in New Delhi, provides high quality compatible inks, toner cartridges, toner powders and other consumables, under their brand name Odyssey. Today Sumanglam has branch offices in different cities spread across India. Recently, Odyssey, an already prominent imaging consumables brand, has launched two lamination machines: YL-320 (heavy duty laminator) and A330. Commenting on their recently launched laminators, Sharad Midha, President of Sumanglam, comments, “We already sold 3000 pieces of our heavy duty laminator which we launched a few months back. Our recently launched A330 model laminator is made of a special plastic that helps the machine body to withstand up to 400 degree centigrade temperature. We see more demand to come for lamination machines in the Indian market in the coming times. These laminators will complement our already existing imaging consumables business that is doing well.” Sumanglam is also the exclusive distributor of Hemp brand for OPC drums in the Indian market. The company currently sells 70,000 / month in the Indian market. For TTI brand toner powders, Sumanglam is one of the two distributors for India. Sharad Midha shares, “We are quite old in the imaging industry. We import from reliable providers from abroad with proven trackrecord of developing high quality products. We maintain good reputation in India and all our products are well-recognized and accepted by the customers. Our products have very good quality and on the other side 38

The current demand for lamination machines in the Indian market is 25,000 pieces a month and the demand is set to increase. Odyssey, an already prominent imaging consumables brand, also enters in the laminating machine market. The Odyssey A330 model laminator is made of special plastic that helps the machine to withstand temperature up to 400 deg C. our prices are very competitive, so there is no need of incentive schemes to the dealers. Next, we have a wide range of products that meet the needs of machines of different brands and models.” With a sales force, including company’s own and contracted, of over 100 and a partner network of over 10,000, Odyssey provides their products all across the country. “Our sales department, via its sales force, deals directly with the dealers and so there is no need of distributors in our model. We have a dealer-network spread from Kanyakumari to Jammu. We are recording a good annual growth rate of nearly 25%,” adds Sharad Midha. Sumanglam and Static Control mutually agreed to settle the issue and close their

long pending litigation. Under the latest agreement, Sumanglam will use SI Odyssey as brand name for their products in India and Static Control will use S Odyssey in the Indian market. This understating will end the litigation that has been hanging in the courts for 7 years. Commenting on their understanding with Static Control, Sharad Midha concluded, “Our understanding with Static Control will put an end to the seven year old litigation that has been going on. This will help us both to operate under slightly different brand names in India.” On the occasion of GST law completing one year in the Indian market and regarding the issues related to imports, Sharad Midha shares, “GST has been a good development for us, which has simplified unnecessary formalities and overwork. Earlier, we had 14 branch offices, and after GST we reduced them to 7 offices as there is no need to have too many branches. Related to imports, earlier there used to be many problems particularly with Delhi customs. EPR too was a problem earlier, but we got GPR. Now customs problems have smoothened to a great extent.” Talking on the latest developments in the market, Sharad Midha comments, “High quality, decent credit, long-term relationships, competitive prices are our main selling points. We have over 10,000 dealer partners. Overall we are growing at annual rate of 25-30%. We are happy about our progress in the Indian imaging market and optimistic about our future.”
