Static Control Achieves Milestone in Technology

tatic Control has introduced the first ever NeverTAB PCR for color toner cartridges. NeverTAB PCRs work just like the OEM, preventing toner additive build-up (TAB) and print defects due to TAB. “This is what the industry has been waiting for the past 20 years,” said Ed Swartz, CEO and founder of Static Control. “Our engineers – the best in the

industry – have worked for years and we have invested aggressively to develop this revolutionary technology, because our customers need this product to compete and to grow.”TAB is the toner additive build-up that is embedded into and on the surface of the PCR during the cartridge life. On color PCRs, it appears as a colored build-up. On monochrome PCRs, TAB is a whitish-grey film. TAB creates an insulator barrier that stops the PCR from uniformly charging and discharging the OPC drum. This barrier results in print defects such as backgrounding, hazing and streaking. The NeverTAB PCR from Static Control does exactly what it says. It never TABS. The new color NeverTAB PCR from Static Control can be used in cartridges for more than 30 color printer applications worldwide. Static Control plans to release a full line of NeverTAB PCRs for a full range of monochrome and colour applications.

EFI Eliminates the Barriers to Enterprise Mobile Printing

E

FI announced PrintMe Mobile, a mobile print solution that is breaking down the barriers to printing from tablets and smartphones in businesses. PrintMe Mobile is a cost-effective, scalable and secure on-premises mobile printing software solution that is easy to use, deploy, support and manage. Users don’t have to download any software to their

Apple, Android, Blackberry and other tablets and smartphones to print on any networked printer. IT departments can install PrintMe Mobile and deliver mobile printing on any printer connected to the network in as little as 20 minutes. “The tablet phenomenon in the enterprise will only continue to gain momentum,” said Tim Bajarin, president of Creative Strategies, a Silicon Valley-based technology consulting firm. “As devices become a more widespread business tool, there will be a natural need to support printing. EFI is getting out ahead of this enterprise IT requirement with PrintMe Mobile.” Research shows that two-thirds of businesses are adopting tablets in 2011 and 65 percent of companies are adding five or more new mobile apps in 2011. This growth in smart device usage is also driving demand for the ability to print from mobile devices. According to a February 2011 report from InfoTrends, 56 percent of CIOs are considering implementing a mobile print solution. Unfortunately, no true enterprise-class mobile print solution to date has addressed both the end-user and IT challenges for printing from mobile devices. Solutions have been costly or complex to implement and manage, and printouts do not always look the way a user expects them to look.EFI PrintMe Mobile shields end users from the technological complexity of mobile printing and lets them solely experience the benefits. This simplicity and flexibility eliminates end-user frustration, and improves user efficiency and productivity in the workplace. Users are not required to leave the application in which they are working in order to print. PrintMe Mobile uniquely enables all printers on an enterprise network to be capable of direct wireless printing from Apple iPads and iPhones. The solution is printer and device agnostic, integrates seamlessly into a company’s network infrastructure without impacting network security policies, and supports both new and legacy printing infrastructure. With highfidelity file conversion, PrintMe Mobile preserves fonts and layouts so that printed documents look like they should.”We’ve addressed the two largest barriers to adoption for mobile device printing in businesses today — ease of deployment and ease of use,” said Toby Weiss, general manager of the Fiery business

unit and senior vice president at EFI. “With PrintMe Mobile, IT departments can increase user productivity, reduce help desk headaches and achieve hero status with a growing number of mobile device users in businesses of any size. EFI is the only major mobile print provider that is exclusively focused on helping customers gain the maximum value out of their existing print infrastructure.”

ver the past five years, the Business Technology Association (BTA) and Strategy Development (SD) have trained hundreds of sales professionals in the science of managed print services (MPS). In that period a clear delineation has occurred with companies pursuing either a service-led approach to MPS in major accounts or a consolidation approach in the SMB market. To ensure that your sales force is prepared for either approach, SD has significantly redesigned the BTA MPS Sales Workshop. “We constantly update our program based on feedback from classes and what we see in the field working with our clients on MPS transactions,” said Tom Callinan, managing principal of Strategy Development. “Through the guidance we perform for our clients, the SD team gets the opportunity to work on 50 to 100 actual MPS transactions each week, ranging from companies with 20 devices to those with 2,000. Nobody has more visibility into MPS and we carry that knowledge to our training programs. We are now launching the fifth major revision to the BTA MPS Sales Workshop and it is a significant update from version 4.0.” The newly redesigned workshop will be

Global Printing Inks Market to Reach US$18.2 Billion by 2017

rinting inks is an industry that embodies the strength of the global as well as regional economies. With high correlation to a country’s GDP, the printing inks industry is cyclical in nature, with economic ups and downs amplifying the demand patterns. The business of printing inks involves development of products as per application and customer needs. Partly dented by the recent global meltdown, and the soaring raw materials prices, the global printing inks industry is projected to grow moderately over the near term. The industry continues to face severe pricing pressures, arising from spiking raw material costs, a scenario that is expected to continue over the near future. The market is also witnessing a transition towards highvalue digital and energy-cured inks. Packaging, commercial publishing/ printing comprise the largest end-use industries in the printing inks market. As stated by the new market research report on Printing Inks, the US continues to remain the single largest regional market, in terms of volume as well as value sales. The European market is driven by rising sales of UV as well as free radical and cationic inks. Although dominated by the developed economies, emerging

trends in the developing countries are triggering growth in the global Printing Inks market. Energy curable ink systems continue to unlock newer applications in the European and Asian markets. Further, rising demand for sleek magazine and catalog covers is driving the use of radiation curing inks in the publishing sector. Asia-Pacific, particularly China and India, represent the fastest growing printing inks markets. Asia-Pacific is projected to exhibit the fastest CAGR of 5.5% over the analysis period. Publication and commercial printing is a growing business in Asia, fueled by developing markets such as China and India. Opening up of these economies has ushered in ample opportunities for demand expansion. Technological advancements have revolutionized the inks industry with printing presses making use of faster and highly automated equipment. Environment friendly inks such as vegetable oil based inks and water-based inks are gaining popularity, given the growing concerns over ecological pollution. Lithographic inks represent the largest segment in the market. Benefits of lithographic printing over other processes exert a positive influence on the lithographic inks market. Digital ink is rapidly gaining popularity with compounded dollar gains grooming the market into a lucrative segment with profitable opportunities. Rotogravure, screen, letterpress and other specialty printing inks represent other rapidly growing segments, which together hold bright prospects for market participants. Digital inks are forecast to register the fastest CAGR of 3.7% over the analysis period. Improvement in screenprinting technology, increased usage of computers by companies (both small and large scale), and establishment of internal graphics departments facilitating professional-quality, in-house printing, have contributed to growing demand for digital inks. Advances in digital printing combined with the tremendous expansion of inkjet printing are likely to spur the digital inks segment. The research report titled “Printing Inks: A Global Strategic Business Report” announced by Global Industry Analysts, Inc., provides a comprehensive review of trends, issues, strategic industry activities, and profiles of major companies worldwide.

Ricoh ChaMPS Program Helps Dealers Take Advantage of Opportunities with MPSA

A

number of Ricoh dealers have joined the Managed Print Services Association (MPSA) through the Ricoh ChaMPS program this year. This special initiative lets Ricoh Family Group (RFG) dealers join the MPSA for a significant reduction off the regular corporate membership. Channel members who’ve recently signed on with MPSA under the Ricoh ChaMPS program include A&B Business, Electro Imaging Systems, Meridian Imaging Solutions and Smart Technologies. One of the new members, Meridian Imaging Solutions, has offered printer service and supplies for over 15 years. In this brief interview, Managed Print Specialist Tara Ingels offers some background on how Meridian has approached the MPS model for its customers. Meridian has offered managed print services for several years, however over the past two years; we have become more focused than ever on best practices and partnering approaches with our customers. We developed our first true “managed print services” program in 2005, using CarbonSix to perform assessments of customer’s print environments. That approach evolved into us investing in our own fleet monitoring application (PrintFleet and now FM Audit) to provide a true cost-per-print approach and to provide automation of printing for the customers. These tools

[ 16 ] NCN

have equipped us with a powerful way to provide rapid assessments, pro-active fleet monitoring and management and ondemand reporting for account reviews. MPS is booming not only throughout the industry, but also within our customer base, and organizations within every niche. It is no longer perceived as a concept, but more so a necessity, as every company has had to take a closer look at their operating expenses and make unprecedented cuts to their bottom line. It’s our goal to establish long-term relationships with our customers and to implement and develop a strategic managed print approach unique to each individual account.“Meridian’s evolution as an MPS provider offers an example for other office technology companies that want to take that path. We look forward to their participation in the MPSA to help us develop managed print services as a profession and as a business model,” said MPSA President, Joe Barganier. “Our membership with MPSA is really about growing and developing our MPS approach and strategy on an ongoing basis,” said Ingels. “Printing and copying are moving targets, and we know that MPS is also a rapidly growing trend.

Lyra Research Releases Two Reports on Digital Imaging Supplies

yra Research, the digital imaging authority), has released two new reports that provide worldwide forecast data and analysis for the digital imaging supplies market. The two reports–

Worldwide Desktop Ink Jet Cartridge Forecast, 2008-2015 and Worldwide Laser Toner Cartridge Forecast, 20082015–are based on key findings from Lyra’s first-half 2011 Hard Copy Supplies Advisory Service (SAS) Forecast 360.Worldwide Desktop Ink Jet Cartridge Forecast, 2008-2015 explores how the desktop ink jet printer market has declined over the past two years as a result of the global recession. Changes in users’ printing habits, adoption of WiFi networks, and screen-based devices all have created barriers to market growth. Nonetheless, shipments of ink cartridges are steadily growing, partly as a result of the move away from low-end devices that often use tricolor cartridges toward higher-end printers that use single-color cartridges. All regions will experience cartridge shipment growth during the forecast period, but Latin America will lead the way with the highest CAGR, at 7.3 percent, followed by Asia Pacific. Beginning in 2011, total worldwide revenue for desktop ink jet cartridges is projected to grow slowly as cartridge prices fall. Total worldwide desktop ink jet cartridge revenue is projected to grow from under $29 billion in 2010 to $33 billion in 2015. Regionally, growth will be strongest in the Asia-Pacific region, followed by Latin America. North America and Europe will both exhibit less robust growth. Specifically, the report provides vendor and regional-level data and analysis regarding ink jet cartridge shipments, revenue, and average sales prices, as well as installed base forecast figures for ink jet hardware.

Remanufacturing the Lexmark X560 Toner Cartridges by: mike Josiah and the Technical sta at uniNet

T

he Lexmark X560 Engine is a multi function 31 ppm Black and 20 ppm color engine that runs at 600 dpi (2400dpi image quality). The first page out is stated to be under 11 seconds and the printer runs off a 400 MHz processor. The memory comes standard at 384MB and is expandable to 1.4GB. These machines can print, scan, fax, copy and duplex. The chips on these cartridges need to be replaced each cycle. There are LY (Starter) cartridges and HY cartridges available. A LY cartridge cannot be made into a HY version as there are a set of gears in HY cartridges not present in Ly cartridge. HY cartridges use a second toner hopper based in the drum half of the cartridge. This hopper is present in the LY versions, but the necessary gears to move the toner are not. These cartridges have a chip that must be replaced each cycle. In addition, they also have gears on the supply hopper(s) that must be set correctly for the cartridge to work. The printers ship with a set of starter cartridges. Both the colors and the black are all rated for 4,000 pages.

Current Machines based on the X560 engine are: Lexmark X560n Lexmark X560dn

[ 30 ] NCN

The catridges used in these machines are as follows: 0X560A2KG Black LY Cartridge (4000 pages) 0X560A2CG Cyan LY Cartridge (4000 pages) 0X560A2MG Magenta LY Cartridge (4000 pages) 0X560A2YG Yellow LY Cartridge (4000 pages) 0X560H2CG Cyan HY Cartridge (10,000 pages) $412.65 List 0X560H2MG Magenta HY Cartridge (10,000 pages)$412.65 List 0X560H2YG Yellow HY Cartridge (10,000 pages) $412.65 List 0X560H2KG Black HY Cartridge (10,000 pages) $278.25 List As you can see, these are extremely profitable cartridges to do. These cartridges use both toner and developer in the cartridges. This system is a little different so we are including the cartridge/printer theory here. Figure #1 shows the basic layout of the cartridges as they relate to the printer and also list the steps used in the printing process. These steps are covered in more detail below. In the first stage, the Primary Charge Roller places a uniform negative DC voltage on the OPC drum surface. The amount of the negative DC voltage placed on the drum is controlled by the printer’s

intensity setting. The PCR cleaning roller removes any toner or paper dust from the PCR. See Figure 2.

In the second stage, each color’s laser beam is fired onto a set of fixed mirrors and then to the rotating mirror (called the scanner). As the mirror rotates, the beams are reflected into a set of focusing lenses. The beams then strike the drums surface, reducing the negative charge and leaving a latent electrostatic image on the drum. The areas where the lasers did not strike the drum will retain the higher negative charge. See Figures 3 & 4.

to keep the amount of toner on the roller constant. See Figure 5. As the laser exposed areas of the OPC Drum approach the developer roller, the toner particles are attracted to the drum’s surface due to the opposite voltage potentials of the toner, and laser exposed areas of the OPC drum. See Figure 6. The fourth stage is the Transfer stage. This is where there are some large differences from monochrome printers and also from other color lasers. In the Primary transfer stage the transfer rollers which are located directly opposite each OPC drum, place a positive DC bias charge on the back of the Transfer Belt. Each toner cartridge has a separate transfer charge roller. As the paper moves through the machine, the image is transferred from the drum directly to the paper. This process is repeated for each color cartridge in the following order: Yellow, Magenta, Cyan, and Black. See Figure 7.

Fig. 6

Fig. 3

Fig. 7

Fig. 4

The third or developing stage is where the toner is developed on the drum by the developing section (or supply chamber), which contains the toner and developer particles. The toner is moved from the hoppers by a series of agitators into the developer section where the augers and magnetic roller are located. The toner is brought out to the drum by the magnetic roller. The toner is also held onto and attracted to the magnetic roller by a negative DC bias voltage. This voltage is controlled by the printer’s intensity setting and causes either more or less toner to be attracted by the developer roller. This in turn will either increase or decrease the print density. The amount of toner on the magnetic roller is controlled by the doctor blade, which uses pressure

The paper separates from the transfer belt as the belt turns back down to start the process again. The static charge on the back of the paper is decreased with static charge eliminator. This helps stabilize the paper feed, and also prevents toner flares (spots) under low temperature and low humidity conditions. See Figure 8. In the fifth stage, the image is then fused onto the paper by the fuser assembly. The fuser Assembly is comprised of the upper heating assembly and lower pressure roller. The lower pressure roller presses the page up into the upper heating assembly which then melts the toner into the paper. This heating assembly is based on older technology. It uses a heat lamp and a pressure roller assembly and not the ceramic heaters that many machines

now use. See Figure 9.

OPC Drum Cleaning:

The drum is cleaned after the image is transferred to the paper by the wiper blade. This part is fairly standard; the wiper blade scrapes the toner off the drum, and the recovery blade guides it into the waste chamber. These machines also have an erase lamp to remove any residual charges from the drum and allow the wiper blade to clean better. See Figure 10. Cartridge troubleshooting will be covered at the end of this article.

See Figures 39 & 40 21) Place a piece of paper across the developer chamber opening so it blocks the mag. Roller. Fill the chamber with the dedicated developer. Remove the paper. The paper makes it simpler to fill the chamber by blocking off the mag. Roller. See Figure 41 22) Clean the edge of the developer chamber opening with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. Install the new seal. See Figure 42 23) For low yield cartridges, fill the toner chamber now. Clean the edge of the chamber with alcohol and install the new seal. HY cartridges have two chambers so it is easier for them to be filled later. Both chambers should be filled at the same time

in order to get the correct amount in each. (They will be filled at the end of these instructions in step 46) See Figures 43 & 44. NOTE: Do NOT mix the developer with the toner. They must be separate inside the cartridge for the system to work correctly. Place the toner chamber aside 24) On the drum chamber, remove the “E” ring from the contact or hub side of the drum. See Figure 45 25) Pull the axle out from the gear side of the drum so that the inner drum ground contacts are not damaged. See Figure 46 26) Remove the drum. See Figure 47 27) Remove the PCR and clean with a lint free cloth. See Figure 48 28) Remove the PCR cleaning roller, vacuum or blow any toner from the roller. See Figure 49 29) Remove the two PCR/PCR Cleaning roller holders; carefully pry

them up from the sides. Clean them with a cotton swab and alcohol. See Figure 50 30) HY cartridges have a seal and set of gears for the additional augers. Remove the seal and clean out any remaining toner. See Figure 51 31) Remove the 2 screws and the wiper blade. Clean out any toner from the waste chamber. See Figure 52 32) Coat the wiper blade with your preferred lubricant and install. Install the two screws. See Figure 53 33) Clean the PCR holders and PCR cleaning roller holders with a cotton swab and alcohol. See Figure 54 34) Install the cleaned PCR/PCR Cleaning roller holders. See Figure 55 35) Install the cleaned PCR cleaning roller. See Figure 56 36) Install the cleaned PCR. Place a small amount of new conductive grease on the black holder side. 39) Install the E ring. See Figure 60 40) On the toner hopper, install the white auger gear as shown. At this point the remaining gears must also be set properly. If the cartridge is a HY the top 2 gears must point to the arrows on the cartridge as shown. For all cartridges on the lower half, the gears must be pointing to the arrow and gear as shown See Figure 61 41) Install the developer roller drive gear. See Figure 62 42) Place the two halves together. See Figure 63 43) With the two gears placed on the black end cap. Install the end cap. Make sure the tab locks in place. Install the screw. See Figures 68 & 69 46) If you have a HY cartridge, fill the upper (Drum Unit) and lower (Toner) hoppers now. We have found it best to fill the upper hopper with ¼ of the bottle and the rest in the lower hopper. See Figure 70 47) Remove the old chip by prying out and lifting up on the black plastic holder. Remove the old chip from the holder and slide the new chip into the rails. Make sure it snaps into place. See Figures 71, 72 & 73. 48) Install the chip holder assembly onto the hopper. sp e ci a l r e p o r t show and the organizer’s service. The success made the exhibitors full of confidence in ReChina Expo 2012. During the three-day show, exhibiting companies kept coming to the organizer’s office to reserve booths at 2012 ReChina Expo (10th session). Over 100 companies including Ninestar, SCC, Beijing Laser, Printermayin, Orink, etc. have reserved booths for 10th ReChina Expo one year before it comes, which indicates another successful session of ReChina Expo in 2012. Both the session of 2011 ReChina Asia Expo (8th and 9th session) achieved big success with 588 exhibitors and 16,200 visitors altogether, which distinguishes ReChina Expo as the biggest trade show in printer consumables industry in the year. To further increase the quality and efficiency of the show, the organizer will hold only one session of ReChina Asia Expo in 2012, which is 10th ReChina Asia Expo. Over 400 exhibiting companies and 10,000 visiting professionals are expected to attend the show.

From the continuous success, the organiser can see the strong vitality and development prospect of the brand of ReChina in next session.

Finally In fact, ReChina Asia Expo, the biggest trade show in the printer consumables industry, is a large-scale, international and professional gathering of the industry insiders. Every year thousands of visitors come from over 70 countries and regions to attend ReChina Asia Expo. In the ninth session of the show around 302 exhibitors and 9,000 attendees from the printer consumables industry attended the show. The show was of great success with huge numbers of products, good crowds of visitors and immediate and potential business deals. But like the other session, the ninth session does not attracted large crowds. This time the Indian visitors were very low in the show. But overall the show concluded with success. But we expect, more exhibitors, visitors, products and technologies will gather at 10th ReChina Asia Expo 2012. So, mark your calendar at Nov. 28-30, 2012 and don’t miss the booming business opportunities at ReChina Expo in Shanghai.

ICRRA Classroom Session – 4 concluded successfully ICRRA (Indian Cartridge Remanufacturers and Recyclers Association) conducted the 4th Session successfully on the 5th of November at Chancery Hotel, Bangalore, has set the trend. The Classroom Session 4 had Hands-on training on HP LaserJet 2600 and HP Mono 1007 (88A). The handson training is getting very popular and people from as far as Bhopal made special efforts to attend the same. It just goes to strengthen ICRRA’s perception that there is definitely a lack of quality training in the country. Although the participants made the effort to come from all over the country, the need to conduct these sessions at different parts of the country is felt acutely. ICRRA wished to applaud Static Control Components sustained contribution to ICRRA’s cause. Static Control Components have not only

JCIPL: Total Solution Provider in

Digital Printing

J

for Inkjet & LaserJet printers of any model

et Cartridge (I) Pvt. Ltd (JCIPL) is known for its commitment to serve the Indian printing industry by pioneering the introduction of innovative technologies time to time. JCIPL is totally committed to Quality and Customer Satisfaction. Today JCIPL becomes a Total Solution Provider in Digital Printing for Inkjet & LaserJet printers of any model / typae / make / size & irrelevant if it is imported the printer from any other country. The company has in hand Compatible cartridges, Bulk Inks, CISS (Bulk Ink Supply System). If in case the company doesn’t have the solution in hand than the R&D department of JCIPL tries & provide the same within a month’s time. The product range of the company has all types of inks in particular as required by any make such as Dye, pigment, Solvent, Eco Solvent, Dye Sublimation, Digital Textile Re-Active, Pigment, Disperse, Acid) to suit your needs. Inkjet printing technology is refereed as Spray printing technology. Inkjet printing consist of print head which contains innumerous nozzles whose sizes are in microns (nano), so it is the nozzle that sprays during printing in the form of dots (Picolitre) & these dots finally forms An Image. It’s a fact that each & every Company’s Printer Head & Picolitre drop Size differs, but this is also true that while printing from any brand of printer & consuming any type of ink first you should calculate your paid cost of Rs per 1 ml. which should not exceed than figures as given, i.e. from 1 ml of ink you should get 4 Photo print outs of A4 size (8 X 12). This should always take into consideration, while calculating the print cost. If you are already a client of JCIPL than you save by 90% approx on your print cost in compare to OEM. Any Inkjet Printer while switching on (consumes 10 units), starts cleaning the head by default do you know that while cleaning the print head it consumes 2 ml of ink equals to 32 units each time, which

[ 46 ] NCN

gets wasted every time you switch on the printer. For your further information the total life of a printer is 20,000 units approx. Now you can reset this Printer Life by the DVD (Indoor Resetter) provided with every CIS System by JCIPL by resetting again the printer life will be extended by 20,000 units. Hence to overcome this loss JCIPL suggest you to turn on your printer in the morning & switch off in the evening as by doing this your 2 ml inks will be wasted only once a day. If you select to do the manual Head Cleaning Option through the Maintenance Menu that each time you clean 32 units are consumed. If you consume any other inks than you need to do the Head cleaning process 10 times, but for Lyson Company ink needs one time cleaning. Even this should be taken into consideration while calculation of print cost. Now, you divide the total paid amount of yours with the total contains (ml) of the ink.

At the other end of the spectrum there are many alternative ink products now available produced to the lowest possible price and this means low print quality, poor reliability, and no warranty. Is it worth risking partner? Of course not. Lyson are an OEM supplier to printer manufacturers, and have been at the forefront of the inkjet ink market for many years producing innovative and reliable products for all areas of digital printing. They manufacture all of their ink to the same high standard which is why they are unique amongst third party brands in offering a comprehensive warranty with all of their inkjet ink products. If you are looking for better value from your inks, but you want to have confidence in your choice, choose Lyson. JCIPL’S Lyson Waterbase Hotnic Dye sublimation Inks uses a unique and different way of printing to the traditional ink jet system giving a fantastic finish

that will not peel off in time or fade like inkjet printing. JCIPL has Lyson Waterbase Dye Sublimation Inks for all EPSON four- six- eight colors printers, Ronald, Mimaki, Mutoh etc. other piezo inkjet printer and Digital Textile Printer. It is used for digital textile printing on Polyester, Nylon, Polyurethane, etc. and hot transferring on metal, porcelain, plastic, carpentry, etc. materials with coating. T-shirts, porcelain, Mug, Plates, ID Card lace, clothes, glass and textile, decoration, outdoor advertising, gift field, fabric industry, portrait industry, label, Ceramic and card industry.

If you are consuming any brand of CISS System you might be facing problems like Blockage of Printer Head; Image Fading and Light Blinking (due to error). CIS System is one time Investment. Generally, all the clients have cultivated one stand that if any damage is caused to printer is only due to the CIS System, but in actual it’s not correct as it none but the Technical default which needs to consults the Printer Manufacturing Company & not the CIS System Dealer. Therefore, JCIPL recommend that the Ink Pipe that connects to your printer waste pad should be disconnected & removed for life time. You have to join a new pipe from where the waste inks flows out and other part of the pipe should be kept outside connected in the bottles to collect the waste ink. JCIPL also provides a CD to reset the message without sending your printer to the Authorized Service Centre..

What Ails Indian Remanufacturing Industry? By: PRAMOD CHATURVEDI, Director -Technical & Corporate, CartridgeWale

Customer: Hello, is this xyz company? XYZcompany: Yes, this is how I can help you? Customer: I wanted to get my 12a cartridge refilled, how much do you charge for this? XYZ Company: Well I am sorry madam we do not refill however you can buy a remanufactured cartridge for the same model. Customer: What is the difference between refilled and remanufactured cartridges? Many explanations later. Customer: But why would I pay that much if can get the refilling done for Rs. 200 only, hangs up. A familiar conversation for people who only deal in Remanufactured Cartridges, when it comes to savings our customer wants to save big and that can be achieved only by getting cartridges refilled. A lot of refiller may ask, is refilling bad? When the customer has no problem with refilled cartridges why should we stop it and start promoting Remanufacturing and remanufactured Cartridges? I would say yes refilling is bad for the Remanufacturing Industry, why and how? I have listed a few of the points there can be many more but this is what ails the Remanufacturing Industry 1. Refillers have no control on quality, to keep their margins high they would use the cheapest Toner Powder available, if a customer is unaware about the remanufactured cartridges and this is the first experience point ,then this customer is lost

[ 50 ] NCN

forever to the RMC industry if the cartridge does not print as expected. 2. Refilling leads to Mid cycle failure, as the refiller does not have a way to find out the ageing of the components, he simply cannot know what part is going to fail and when, so when a customer comes back to the refiller with complaint the first thing they would tend to change is OPC Drum now that might or might not be the part which has failed, this leads to hit and trial and ultimately leads to customer dissatisfaction. 3. Almost all of the Refillers do not have the understanding of electro photographic process and Toner cartridge functioning, this leads to refiller treating the cartridge as a mechanical product, ignoring the electrical aspects of the Toner cartridge. 4. Refillers use one for all approach for toners; the only differentiator they are aware of is magnetic &nonmagnetic. Every printer is unique and uses different print engines, have different dpi and printing speeds, it is very difficult if not impossible for a refiller to start using Engine specific toners. I could go on but, these are the major points, I think should be taken care of. Refillers may ask me but are all the remanufactures following the process and producing a true remanufactured cartridge? Well to be very honest my answer would be NO, not all are producing the True Remanufactured Cartridge. A truly RMC should have all the critical components changed and should

have no mid cycle failures alas this is not the scenario, many remanufacturers would change the most visible part the OPC Drum and the perceived damaged part (not all of them), again bringing bad name to the Remanufacturing Industry. As compared to the OEM, Remanufactured Cartridges offer a lot of savings for its users but still many remanufacturers are pushing the envelope and competing on the price alone, they might succeed in getting the customer but would their products succeed? Price may be a starting point but what wins ultimately is Quality. As a nation we are very good at selling, but what matters is the after sales service or customer care. How do we react if the product fails to meet our customer’s expectations? This is the most overlooked aspect in this industry. Remanufacturing is not all about pasting decorative labels and fancy packaging, it is about a product which functions as good as an OEM if not better. When Remanufacturing is being taken to a whole new level overseas, a lot of money invested in the Technology our remanufactures lack the basic tools, technology is still a bad investment. We will have to fulfill the commitment of a god product at a great price to keep the industry going and earning ourselves a good reputation. It can’t be done overnight, but the time is now to start moving and take our Indian Remanufacturing industry to the Global standards. Trust me there is no better marketing than to have a satisfied customer talking good about your product.
