Getting The Sharp Benefits Out Of Air Purifiers Mr. Shuvendu Mazumdar, National Product Manager- SHARP Air Purifier Business

D

angerous. Hazardous. Apocalyptic. Many environmentalists had used such words for Air Quality. Of course, it had to do with the air pollution levels in Delhi. The National Capital and its inhabitants struggled for a breath of fresh air for months. The Air Quality Index reached the dangerous level of over 1000. Till date, it hovers around 400 mark, which is considered to be unhealthy. Research on air pollution from Delhi and surrounding areas revealed that mortality and morbidity increased with higher air pollution. Moreover, symptoms like Nasal Blockage, Allergy, dryness of skin and even children falling sick frequently are on rise in lieu of bad Air Quality for a considerable period. It’s true that many of us might not suffer from serious health conditions because of air pollution immediately. But the damage is slow, progressive and often permanent. From irritations of eyes and mouth to depleted energy levels, respiratory issues and drastically reduced lung function; air pollution can have a devastating impact on your overall health. If you think you can safeguard yourself from the ill effects of air pollution by staying indoors then think again. Several studies have noted that indoor air quality all over the country remains abysmal and can be the cause of serious health hazards. With every breath some pollutant or the other enters our body, bombarding our immune system thus affecting our health. If we can reduce the intake of toxic pollutants by breathing clean and fresh air at least while we are sleeping, inflammation can be reduced which in turn reduces sick days. Several research documents and field trials have proven the effectiveness of Air Purifier at homes or other indoor spaces, but they can be can be more effective if used for a longer duration of time and at a stretch. How do you decide which one’s the best for you and your needs? Making the Sharp decision Since it’s about the comfort and wellbeing of your loved ones, you want to make the best decision when buying air purifiers. But it’s important to realize that Indian market is nascent. While there are certain factors and specifications that you can consider when weighing your options, without proper certifications it becomes a tricky decision. The quality of the HEPA filter, Clean Air Delivery Rate, Air Change Per Hour, product warranty are some of the features that have to be taken into account. But what about the crucial certifications and research that backs the claims of number of brands in the market? Thus, while selecting an Air Purifier one must look for certifications and testing results. “Several institutions including British Allergy Foundation and TERI has extensively tested Air Purifiers for their functionality and performance and further have provided their seal of trust against which consumer may evaluate their options of buying while making purchase decisions” said Mr. Shuvendu Mazumdar (National Product Manager), Sharp Air Purifiers. Also with such standards in place consumer can choose a holistic Air Purifier which may help them combat against irritants like dust, fungi, viruses, pollen and mold via eliminating them from air and surface along with PM 2.5 and PM 10 dust particles. British Allergy foundation has recently tested Sharp Plasmacluster Air Purifiers and found their effectiveness in reducing asthma and allergy triggers drastically. Sharp has claimed that they have gone beyond the normal HEPA filter air purification and its award winning Plasmacluster and humidifying function ensures that the air their consumers breathe is as clean as it should be. “These air purifiers have been tested by 28 global labs for their safety and effectives, which speaks volumes about their overall quality, added Mr. Mazumdar.

Fujifilm Instax Square SQ10 Gives you instant enjoyment

T

his is the latest model of SQ series from Fujifilm, this is a instant film camera but its now also digital. The SQ 10 is more modern and more minimalistic. It is compact in size and designed smartly. This is a hybrid instant camera with instant print plus digital technology. This is a new format for the film in which you can print 1/1 square film format which is really fantastic.

Inside the Box: With the SQ10 you will get a wrist wrap, a rechargeable battery, a micro USB cable for charging with manuals for reference.

Design: It has an iconic design combined with thin round, symmetrical shape for easy handling and precise control. Not too heavy but feels little hefty, it looks like a compact disk player has a symmetrical design. Looking at the front it has a turn dial which is an on and off switch, you just have to turn the dial to turn it on n off. Above the dial you will find two shutter buttons on both side which are customizable, easy for both left and right-hand use. It has also an AF lamp for focus and a timer indicator. On top front of the camera you will get a flash and, on both sides, you have the lids to

attach the strap and a speaker grill on side of the camera. Underneath the speaker you will get a chamber where you can plug the USB cable to charge the camera and a with a SD card slot. On the other side of the camera it has an Auto and Manual switch, if it is in Auto mode it will print every picture you click, on the other hand if you put it in Manual mode you can opt for which want to print after you click. Under the switch you have the little battery chamber. And finally, on the backside it has a first digital screen on a Fujifilm model camera, it’s a TFT colour LCD monitor so you can edit and process images to create just the look you want. The split display allows you to view images and print them as displayed on the screen. Underneath the screen you have a circular dial with a menu button in middle of it to make various adjustments. Overall the design is very practical, it gives you both modern and retro feel.

Performance: The centre lens allows easy shooting from any angle for accurate recreation of the composition of your shot. The Square doesn’t shoot straight to instant film, though, but instead uses a very small digital image sensor that captures 1,920x1,920-pixel images about 3.6 megapixels. With a flip of a switch, you can choose to have every picture you take printed -- like an analog instant film camera -- or you can capture a shot and decide if you want a print fact after . And, since all shots are stored straight to internal memory it’ll hold up to 50 photos or an optional microSD card. Use the command dial to perform all operations from editing and processing to printing while looking at the monitor, so that your photos come out just the way you want them. Equipped with date selection function. A digital zoom of up to 2.4x can be applied to prints. You can also attach a tripod with SQ10. The camera takes around 2 hrs for full charge.

Verdict: Express your creativity in an instant, with stunning direct prints from the new hybrid instax SQUARE SQ10. This camera lets you capture those ‘once in a lifetime’ memories and moments beautifully, in a stylish square format.

Special Story

In his last full budget before general elections in 2019, Finance Minister Mr. Arun Jaitley reduced corporate tax for 99 percent of the companies to 25 percent. In keeping with his earlier announcement of reducing corporate taxation rate to 25 per cent, the finance minister made the change for companies with turnover of upto Rs 250 crore, up from Rs 50 crore announced during his last year budget speech. He said this would take care of almost 99 per cent of the companies and would have an impact of Rs 7,000 crore on government finances. Only about 250 companies would have a turnover above the cut-off level. An ID on lines of Aadhaar would also be set up for companies. Mr. Jaitley also proposed to increase customs duty on mobile phones from 15 per cent to 20 per cent, on some of their parts and accessories to 15 per cent and on certain parts of TVs to 15 per cent. “This measure will promote creation of more jobs in the country,” he said.

Industry leaders share their views on Union Budget 2018 Mr. P Sanjeev, Vice President Sales Huawei India, Consumer Business Group. “Huawei Honor is with the law of the land and in line with the government’s vision of furthering local manufacturing. With our India first strategy, our aim is to build local capacity for indigenous production in India to meet the growing demand for the our smartphones in the market in the long run. Earlier this week, we have begun production of our latest bestseller the Honor 7x and will continue to add to our production portfolio.”

Mr. Vikas Agarwal, General Manager at OnePlus India “Since the announcement of Make in India program 3 years back, over 85% of smartphones sold in country are now produced locally. So, this is opportune time to introduce next set of regulations to attract investment in the manufacturing sector and establish India as a global hub for electronics. At OnePlus, we are fully committed to the Indian market and welcome the proposed regulations.

Mobility february 2018

Currently, all OnePlus smartphones are produced locally and we are already exploring ways to further increase the share of local manufacturing to ensure there is minimal cost impact of any new regulations to the end customer.”

Mr. Sanjay Kumar Kalirona, CEO & Director, COMIO “The Union Budget-2018 is a positive step towards India’s growing smartphone market. The increased custom duty on mobiles will further boost local manufacturing and will be the essential push to create a manufacturing eco-system in India. Smartphones play a crucial role in today’s times and this budget is an extension to the ‘Digital India’ initiative. With focus on development, it is a progressive budget and is a stepping stone to India’s growth story.”

Mr. Manish Sharma, President and CEO, Panasonic India & South-Asia; President, CEAMA. “ACE industry welcomes the Budget, particularly the push for local manufacturing of Mobile Phones and Consumer Electronics by increasing Customs Duty on imported products and components, a move that is consistent with the government’s Make-in-India initiative. The focus on improving rural electrification and well-being through the National Livelihood Mission will stimulate rural demand for electronics and appliances in the short to medium term meanwhile, a

Special Story sustained development can be ensured through the focus on Smart Cities. The MSME sector, which forms the backbone of the electronics industry will benefit from reduction in corporate tax from 30% to 25% and the allocation of ~Rs 3,800 crore for the development of the sector will translate to strengthening the electronics eco-system at large. Further, doubling of allocation towards future technologies such as IoT, Robotics, etc. are encouraging as these rapidly growing technologies are likely to impact our industry as well.”

Mr. Syed Tajuddin, CEO, Coolpad India. “This budget is pretty regular with a mix bag of things, nothing path breaking or outstanding to boost the manufacturing sector. For agricultural and rural economy there is some really positive news, but not great hints for the Consumer durable and mobile handset industry. The increase in custom duty from 15% to 20% will definitely hamper the cost to customer, especially when it comes to getting repairs for the high-end devices. While increase in custom duty on handsets will compel brands to manufacture or assemble more in India, still there is not great support for local ecosystem for manufacturing spare parts. And this lack of local spare part manufacturers will mean a tough situation for mobile handset brands. Hence a brand is compelled to import most of the spare parts and customers have to bear some burden of it.”

Mr. Sudhin Mathur, Managing Director, Motorola Mobility India “The current move will provide stimulus to the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and further enhance the manufacturing sector leading to job creation. Our journey of Make in India began three years ago and we have been manufacturing and assembling at our manufacturing unit through our global contract manufacturing partner Flextronics. We have doubled up our production capacity this financial year and will continue to scale up our manufacturing capacities to meet the growing customer demand”

Mr. Sachin Batra, CMO, ZTE Corporation. “With the increase in basic custom duty from 15 to 20 percent, the government has shown the encouragement to major smartphone players in setting up their manufacturing units in India. This step apart from supporting the Make in India movement, will also create job opportunities. The emergence of artificial intelligence will prepare the country for future and novel

technologies. Providing optical fibre connectivity through Bharat Net Program to 2.5 Lakh villagers is a commendable addition to this year’s budget that will indeed make life easier for Indians”

Mr. Ajey Mehta, Vice President India, HMD Global. “HMD Global continues its strong emphasis on PM Modi’s Make in India campaign. While the import duties for mobile phones increased to 20%, along with a 15% duty on key components, this will have a minimum impact on our business, as all of our current portfolio of Nokia phones are manufactured in India.” said Ajey Mehta, Vice President India, HMD Global

Mr. Amit Gujral , Chief Marketing Officer, LG Electronics,India “The Budget undoubtedly is a ‘people’s budget’, favouring the rural populace, which is the backbone of the Indian economy. Government’s focus on transforming India into a Digital power with its roots in promoting innovation ecosystems, smart technology, robotics , IoT and artificial intelligence is commendable. It is good to see that there has been a significant push to boost the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Our heartiest congratulations to the Government for focusing on healthcare, infrastructural development and further investing in Swacchh Bharat Mission.”

Mr. Rajesh Aggarwal, Co-Founder Micromax This year’s Budget has brought significant changes, focusing on various key aspects which are largely stressed upon our overall economic growth – Rural, Agriculture, Ease of doing business, skilled based education, job creation, healthcare, housing, Structural reforms and infrastructure development which will help stimulate and strengthen the Indian economy The emphasis is on establishing a programme to bring in direct efforts towards building a holistic ecosystem for Artificial intelligence. The focus on AI is a welcome move towards technological advancements in India and an allocation of INR 3073 crore for the Digital India scheme will certainly propel digital adoption and smartphone adoption in the country. The increase in customs duty on Mobiles will encourage local manufacturing. As India is becoming the global hub for manufacturing, the measures taken by the government will surely grow confidence amongst the manufacturers and I strongly believe that this will further create business and human resource opportunities as well. Also, with the government’s move to invest in over 5 lakh WIFI Hotspots, will enable rural India to have Broadband access which in turn will be a significant stepping stone in the Digital India movement. The government’s measures towards the import duty on printed circuit boards (PCBs), camera modules, connectors and other components that go into making smartphones, will

boost the Make in India initiative and will relentlessly pursue in curbing imports and building value addition in the country. Micromax is deeply connected on the Make in India initiative with 3 running factories and we support this. However, the increase in customs duty on the certain parts of TV might affect the manufacturing ecosystem adversely. We need the government to help in creating an improved local manufacturing and a better component ecosystem for the consumer electronics manufacturers as well. With focus on growth, it is the budget to look forward that would add an impetus to the India’s growth story.

Mr. Sanjeev Agarwal, Chief Manufacturing Officer, LAVA International. “We welcome the announcement on custom duty increase in mobile phones from 15pc to 20 pc in the Union Budget 2018-19. This will provide a big boost to the Make-inIndia campaign by the government, and will be instrumental in achieving our country’s vision of making India a global hub for mobile phone manufacturing. Local manufacturing will create more job opportunities, benefitting the youth and contributing towards the overall growth of the economy. I congratulate the government on this landmark decision.”

Mr Rajeev Jain, Chief Financial Officer, Intex Technologies “The Budget is focused towards increasing the personal disposable income in rural India and critical areas like education, health and infrastructure. This will further enhance the Make in India initiative of the Government in critical electronic industry particularly mobile, which is the key product of all the Government’s initiatives. The Budget will spur the demand side of the economy by proposing various rural income enhancement schemes and reducing various pain areas of farmers. This will in turn rejuvenate the overall economic growth and spur demand for consumer electronics items like mobile phones and LED TVs thereby fuelling domestic businesses. Intex has been known to cater to the developing Tier 2 and 3 cities since inception with its affordable consumer products and with the various rural personal disposable income enhancement schemes introduced in the budget, it will give a fillip to the sale and demand of electronic products. The budget has further strengthened the Digital India initiative with the boost in increasing allocation for digital education through classrooms and continue with the further broadband penetration in the country. I welcome government’s move to walk the talk on “Make in India” by increasing customs duty (to 20%) on the imported mobile phones and in PCBAs of accessories like batteries & chargers (15%), which will prove to be the big boost for localisation and setting up of a domestic component ecosystem. This is a big thumbs up to domestic players like Intex, which have been developing domestic capacities since long in electronics manufacturing.

Mobility february 2018

The Budget has also increased duty on certain LED TV components such as LED panels (15%), which will push for developing capacities for local manufacturing of components. Such move encourage Intex that has been working on enhancing domestic capacities and has recently began its own Open Cell Manufacturing or LED Panel manufacturing to improve quality control and produce affordable quality products. It will encourage localisation in India with domestic manufacturers now implementing plans for local production capacity. Overall, the budget is development oriented fulfilling the ease of doing business and ease of living for citizens.”

Mr. Mahesh Lingareddy, Founder & Chairman of Smartron.

“Union Budget 2018 has given clear indications of a continued focus on the growth of new businesses in India. The announcement of increase in basic customs duty on mobile phones to 20% is a concrete step towards fostering local manufacturing in India which would further fuel indigenous innovation. This will allow us to build an innovation engine pipeline of several global brands in the country. As India’s first global OEM and IOT brand with a vision of putting India on the global innovation map, the Union Budget would prove to be the necessary catalyst for our continued growth towards becoming a multibillion dollar company globally. India needs an investment (VC) ecosystem that can pump in US$15-US$20 billion every year to support and sustain a 5000+ startup ecosystem. Union Budget 2018 has taken the needs of the ecosystem into consideration by taking policy decisions to build a robust alternative investment regime in the country along-with a taxation model designed for the special nature of VC funds and angel investors. These policies and new taxation model would definitely help the start-ups to ensure survival and profitability over the years. As India’s first global OEM and IoT brand, Smartron believes in collective innovation and this year’s Union Budget would help us in our long term vision of bringing in the start-ups together on a single platform to innovate at the global level.”

Mr. Ashwin Bhandari, CEO iVOOMi India

It’s a welcome initiative towards make in india, in last 2 years ecosystem in India has already taken first level growth and situation has improved a lot. All the required resources for making the phones in India are stable, hence this will fuel industry growth, boom localisation to next level. We at iVooMi will be changing over to 100% (currently is above 95%) make in India with this initiative and start the development of localisation for PCBA SMT, Battery complete unit, Transducers making in India to drive the growth to next level, “Targeting 2020 as Completely designed and Manufactured Phone In India”. Further incentivising the higher level manufacturing (Surface Mount Technology, Injection Moulding, Optical Electronics) is recommended to expedite the design and development within Indian ecosystem.

interview

Comio aims to set up own manufacturing unit by the end of this year.

Mr. Sumit Sehgal, CMO, COMIO Smartphones

Q Over the years the marketing landscape has changed drastically and a role of the CMO at any company has followed suit. Now, with so many marketing channels gaining traction in the industry and so many possible avenues for engagement, what are the key points you focused on for a new brand like COMIO? The first step is to really decide your segment and their channels of content consumption and engagement.

Mobility february 2018

And then for a new brand like ours, build width of awareness cost effectively which is sync with the core brand idea. COMIO is a challenger brand and our smartphones are for today’s youth. As a brand we want to support and encourage them to hear only their own voice and shut out the external voices. This forms the basics. Through our very first campaign, #DontListen Kar Daal, we engaged with youth and raised questions on the challenges faced

35

by them and encouraged them to following their heart. We got an overwhelming response. This was possible because of 2 key reasons: One – That we engaged with our segment in their medium of choice – Digital. We also went face-to- face on ground and compounded the power through digital. Second – The theme came from a strong insight that tugged at their hearts. Therefore, for a very sharp and targeted segment as defined for Comio, the channels of consumption were also narrowed and targeted and therefore a focussed approach has its payoffs. Q Coming to a new brand and take charge is very challenging for everyone, how you explain your role and journey with brand COMIO till date? I have seen my wife giving birth to two children. I am going through the same now - giving birth to a brand. It is a great feeling but is also accompanied with a strong sentiment of care, caution and responsibility. It goes without saying that this is the most ecstatic time of my life. The others have grown up and are very successful. I must now bring up this child in a very competitive environment where my responsibility is to nurture it to the best of my ability so that it grows up to be an adult who has strong values and beliefs and then creates success and garners love for itself wherever it goes. Q How important it is to connect with your audience? Do you feel these days marketing model was not to talk about devices but to talk about the people who use our devices? It is the age of building relationships between brands and consumers. The marketing model has always been to talk with consumers, bond with them and build relationships with those who have the same beliefs as the brand’s. The product is a mere representation of the brand. However, many marketers have found it challenging to go beyond the product since the product

communication tends to deliver short term benefits while bonding with consumer beliefs is more profitable in the long term. Different medium can work together to deliver both and that has to be carefully calibrated to ensure that a seamless thought of the ‘What’ and ‘Why’ are delivered effectively to consumers’. We have seen many new online campaign initiatives from COMIO, tell us how effective it was? Our first and very successful campaign- ‘Don’t Listen Kar Daal’ was inspired by the confidence and attitude of today’s youth. Overall the campaign has done extremely well in crossing all industry benchmarks in terms of social engagement and CTR. COMIO engaged with next generation of entertainers to popularise the campaign, including internet singing sensation- Shraddha Sharma, multi-talented actor and singer-Darshan Rawal, India's no. 1 prankster group – Funk You, and YouTube star - Anisha Dixit aka Rickshawali. Complementing the core of the campaign, the brand ambassadors brought on board are the embodiment of this youthful ‘Kar Daal’ spirit. The campaign mix was focussed on youth media consumption habits with a judicious use of digital, outdoor, radio and a high focus on on-ground youth congregation areas as well as using bloggers and influencers who had a span reaching out to youth in our selected geographies. As the campaign progressed, new and different questions were raised to engage with the youth like “Kya girls ko late night bahar nahi nikalna chahiye? Kya phone pe chipke rehna time waste karna hai? Padhaayi ke bina kuch nahi ban paaoge? The campaign motivated people not to hesitate and voice out their opinion no matter how different it is. Over the course of the campaign, COMIO India had executed high-engagement activations with its targeted audience by sharing inspiring tales of the four-young digital sensations. The brand has been doing exciting online and offline. Through this campaign, we have received over 36000 story submissions from India’s youth. Q How important 2018 is for Comio? What are your plans? Ans. The year 2018 is extremely crucial for COMIO since by early 2018, we would have a national footprint. Manufacturing will play a critical role as well, currently we are getting our smartphones manufactured from third party manufacturers, but we aim to set up our own manufacturing unit by the end of this year. Competition would be more intense and we need to drive our differentiation and establish our beliefs as a brand so that we can create affinity with like-minded consumers’. Our online and offline distribution and service network needs to complement our consumer segment and offer great value as well as a smooth brand experience.
