Video surveillance shifting to Network video surveillance he migration from analog to network surveillance cameras has changed the way many security systems are conceived, built and managed. With the deployment of cameras onto IT networks, the scalability and capabilities of video surveillance systems have increased dramatically. The beneits of network video surveillance are not new concepts; they have driven the transition to network equipment from the beginning. Now the video surveillance market has inally reached the point where more revenues come from network than analog equipment.

T

Increasing numbers of traditional IT vendors are taking note of the opportunities in video surveillance. The global video surveillance equipment and storage market is forecast to be worth over $28 billion by 2018. IHS forecasts that by 2017, each day that video surveillance cameras are installed globally will produce 859 petabytes of data. These are big igures. IT vendors have taken note of the opportunity to help capture, manage and store this data. The use of virtualization is a key advantage of network infrastructure, particularly in an edge-to-core system. Virtualized applications generally mean that less hardware is required to perform multiple roles. Hybrid cloud systems also bring seamless integration of edge and cloud process and storage.

Netlix malware and phishing campaigns help build emerging black market etlix’s popularity has sharply grown since its creation in 1997. The company recently launched its streaming service globally. It is now available in more than 190 regions around the world. This success has attracted the attention of attackers. We have observed malware and phishing campaigns targeting Netlix users’ information. The details are then added to a growing black market that claims to provide cheaper access to the service. One malware campaign involves malicious iles posing as Netlix software on compromised computers’ desktops. The iles are downloaders that, once executed, open the Netlix home page as a decoy and secretly download Infostealer.Banload. Banload steals banking information from the afected computer. The Trojan has primarily been used in Brazil. The Netlix-disguised iles aren’t dropped through drive-by downloads. Instead, the iles are most likely downloaded by users who may have been tricked by fake advertisements or ofers of free or cheaper access to Netlix. side from delivering malware, attackers may target Netlix users by attempting to steal their login credentials through phishing campaigns. Netlix subscriptions allow between one and four users on the same account. This means that an attacker could piggyback on a user’s subscription without their knowledge.

Surveillance Market

Witnessing Immense Growth

The rising incidents of crime and the growing awareness about beneits of the electronic security devices among the people have primarily driven the electronic security market. Also, the security market growth has been fuelled by rising residential, commercial and industrial construction, increased activity by foreign and domestic companies and rapid expansion of distribution channels.

ew technologies undoubtedly create a potential for both malicious as well as beneicial use for society. Surveillance technologies are a prime example, which having enabled improvements in law enforcement and security, at the same time creating unresolved implications for privacy and civil liberties. These technologies expose what Lawrence Lessig describes as ‘latent ambiguities’ in the law - ambiguities that require 16

us to assess the implications and efects of new technologies and how to govern them, and most importantly, to choose between conlicting values regarding the use of technologies, for example, increased security as against decreased privacy. Unfortunately, in India, the ambiguity seems to have been resolved squarely in favour of surveillance under the existing regulatory regime, surveillance is either expressly

mandated or unregulated, and requires surveillance to be built into the architecture and design of public spaces like Internet and telephone networks or even public roads and parks. Most of these regulations or mechanisms are framed without democratic debate, through executive mechanisms and private contracts with technology providers, without and public accountability or transparency. quickly becoming the norm in public spaces. Emerging video surveillance tools allow for greater networking of cameras, greater ields of vision, cheaper access and come with a host of tools such as facial recognition and tracking as well as vehicle tracking. The video surveillance market in India is expected to reach Rs 5718 cr (US$841 million) in 2016, with a CAGR of 32.49%. It is expected to top US$ 2.4 billion by 2020. The Indian surveillance market is witnessing immense growth from sectors such as city surveillance, hospitality, airport security, BFSI, retail, BPO, manufacturing, college campuses, infrastructure companies and education. The government, in general, is the biggest segment in terms of volume demand. The private sector also shows vast potential. About 87% of surveillance needs are for commercial purpose, whereas 13% are for residential.

Scenario of Surveillance Market in India According to Yogesh B. Dutta, COO-CP PLUS, the Indian security market

has observed a steady rise in the demand for security solutions over the past few years in order to cope with the rising security concerns. And why not; in a country of 1.25 billion people, security can be a pressing concern. Nevertheless, this upsurge in demand for security solutions has led to constant technological

advancements, be it in the form of features, speciications or utility upgrades or revolutionary ones such as the introduction of network-based, IP-integrated video solutions. “With government’s increased focus on 100 smart cities project, we see video surveillance gradually in iltering in most public places and cities and rising demand for safe city implementations; making government along with enterprise and infrastructure a few of our biggest focus areas. Video surveillance is garnering prominence and its much deserved importance due to the increasing safety issues faced by the country.

products by many global MNCs. The government in India through its laws is making it mandatory to install CCTV camera in public & private enterprise and establishment,” concluded, Sanjeev Sehgal, Managing Director, Sparsh.

Roadblocks for Analog to Digital transition Currently there is a shift from analog to IP-based security across all market segments. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are particularly beneiting from the modular, costefective and easy-to-deploy solutions available. These cameras have an eicient networking and storage approach and provide a sophisticated security system for an afordable price. “There are various roadblocks that we face; one of them being the lack of awareness of the beneits of an IP-based security system. Most SMBs have an issue trusting their vendors

because they feel that because cloud technologies are used and hence the data will be accessible to all, which can be a threat according to them. Secondly, they believe that because analog devices are cheaper compared to IPbased security systems, they are more cost-efective, which is completely misconstrued as IP-based security systems are more cost-efective as they are a onetime investment,” said, Holla of Axis Communications India & SAARC. “The Indian market is showing some resistance to embracing IP all out because of the entrenched mindset, lack of skill-set among channel partners, limited awareness, cost factor and bloated bureaucracy. In view of the above mentioned reasons, the transition from Analog to IP is taking place at a slower pace,” said, Dhakan of Pramahikvision (India) Pvt. Ltd. “The transition has been happening at a rapid rate now but more education and awareness is required for making it faster,” added, Sehgal of Sparsh. “Analog-based surveillance systems account for majority of the share of approx 68% in the overall

market, yet IP-based surveillance systems are expected to grow in the coming years. However, keeping in view that India is a price-sensitive market seems a major roadblock to the transition although signiicant price decline is easing out the trend moving towards digital surveillance,” said, Kedia of Techcom. “Digital or IP surveillance solutions have a host of beneits to ofer, including high levels of integration, superior image quality, lexibility and scalability as per user needs, and distributed intelligence for smart surveillance. The possibilities with IP surveillance are ininite. However, the Indian market, which is presently analogue-dominated, presents signiicant resistance towards digital surveillance despite the beneits that latter has to ofer. Price continues to be a major factor curbing the ‘Analogue to Digital’ transition. Even though the costs associated with digital surveillance mellow down over time, the initial costs are considerably higher than analogue solutions. The level of awareness about digital surveillance and its capabilities is

also signiicantly low in India; many of the authorized partners aren’t well informed themselves, rendering them unable to convey the advantage to the end users,” concluded, Dutta of CP-Plus.

Upcoming Technology Trends Closely integrated security solutions instead of standalone solutions in IP CCTV segment will be the major trends in the coming years. Product-cum-Service will become more and more relevant and popular as compared to the product per se. “End-users who want highdeinition video surveillance have previously been limited to one option: megapixel/high deinition network cameras. However, this is no longer the case as various HD CCTV solutions are now commercially available. The purpose of these solutions is to enable end-users to receive the beneits of high deinition video and not have

to install network infrastructure. Axis communications welcomes this shift and provides a complete range of solutions for a broad spectrum of industry segments and applications. Whether one needs a few cameras or many cameras, Axis cameras and solutions are easy to install and easy to operate,” said, Holla of Axis Communications. “IP-based surveillance and video analytics will emerge as a potent force in the surveillance business in India. They are touted as the future of surveillance systems. Integrated security solutions combined with business intelligence will be preferred rather than mere standalone security solutions. 3-D technology will play a key role. High deinition CCTV (HD CCTV) will hugely impact the surveillance market. Online interactive surveillance solutions will be predominant. Also cloud-based and mobile-operated technologies will become popular in the surveillance sphere,” listed Dhakan of Pramahikvision (India) Pvt. Solutions are now focused on making surveillance more meaningful and enabling. 4K resolution, Video in the Cloud, and Video Analytics are the

upcoming trends in the surveillance business,” said, Dutta of CP-Plus. “There is a growing demand for video surveillance in recent years and with more vendors including Axis is continuing to innovate and provide value-add solutions to the end users.

The market will be fragmented and there will be opportunities for the leading players in the Medium & Large Enterprises while the entry level brands will eye the Small & Home segments. Vendors with good brand, support, quality/reliability, innovation, lower TCO would be successful in the medium & enterprise segment,” concluded, Holla of Axis Communication.

Stif Competition Ahead “Indian CCTV market is still mainly unorganized with many companies selling spurious products. Customers need to be educated so that they can buy the right product and technology

for their security needs and get best return on their investment. In addition, government needs to set standards for security devices that can be sold and provide guidelines for the import of electronic security products in India,” said, Sehgal of Sparsh. “Undoubtedly the competition is going to be tough and selling only the product will not be enough rather after sales service & solution provider will be the winners which we are ready for. We presently hold the largest market share in the country, and all our eforts will be towards maintaining this position through better, more value-adding products. While there will always be competition in the market, we believe that if we continue creating products and solutions that improve and enhance the lives of our customers, we will always be the ‘preferred’ security and surveillance brand,” claimed,

Consumer lash storage industry has been undergoing huge losses due to increasing counterfeit goods

T

he counterfeit market in India has b.een growing at an alarming rate over the last few years. According to ‘Sell SMART’ report released in 2014 by FICCI and KPMG, counterfeit was growing at a rate of 44% per annum and had touched Rs 1.05 lakh crore in size in 2014. India has been sufering signiicant economic consequences as a result of widespread counterfeiting, piracy and smuggling in the country.

The consumer lash storage industry in India has been undergoing huge losses due to increasing counterfeit goods. The memory cards and pen drive market has seen a signiicant increase in counterfeit products and illegal imports over the last few months. Counterfeiting

24

is a serious issue and poses a big challenge for both manufacturers and consumers alike. Due to the high rate of counterfeits available in the market, consumers are inding it extremely diicult to distinguish between original and fake products. This is mostly due to the similarity in the packaging of counterfeit vs original good - there is a striking resemblance between the two such as packaging, branding, logo, size, etc, hence it gets extremely diicult for the consumers to notice the diference. In order to curb the situation, the Delhi Police conducted raids at Lajpat Nagar, Karol Bagh and two other markets last month which are hubs. The police seized approx. 1500 counterfeit products which mostly included mobile memory (microSD) cards and USBs and strict legal action has been initiated against the defendants. Delhi Police will keep conducting raids to curtail similar activity in other locations across Delhi in order to

keep a check on this growing menace. Government agencies might also conduct raids in other major cities to initiate legal action against similar entities involved in counterfeiting of memory cards and USBs. As the industry tackles the increasing counterfeit (black) market, there is an increasing need for consumer awareness which will help control the situation. Also, in order to be assured of getting a legitimate product, it is important that consumers buy products contained in sealed pack from authorized and well known retail outlets only. Counterfeit products have an impact on both producers and consumers; on one hand the producers risk damage to their brand image, and consequently on sales; on the other hand, consumers pay excessively for low quality products that could possibly have health and safety risks. Counterfeit products are a challenge for the government as well. Being a clandestine industry, the manufacture of counterfeit products causes a substantial loss to the exchequer in terms of lost tax revenue.

15 February 2016

In India SSD adoption is still at a nascent stage and is expected to grow over the next few years as consumers will migrate to SSDs over HDD. There are illuminated indicators to show activity while in use. It also has a power saving mode to make sure data is not lost under unexpected circumstances. As this is a 2.5 inch enclosure it won’t need an external power supply as the USB port itself would do the job of supplying power to the enclosure. With these enclosures your HDD is as good as a portable external drive.
