Globally Integrated Students An International Campus Community Global Issue Seminars: Broadening Horizons The Global Issue Seminars of the Fall 2013 semester have brought key issues to the a=ention of many students around campus. Since 2009, monthly seminars tackle global issues relevant to North Carolina, the nation, and the world, while also showcasing what NC State has to offer in terms of teaching, research, extension, and engagement in each of these international issues. From the problems of nutrition as a global epidemic, to water security on a global scale, NC State students have had the chance to hear from experts on each of these topics, from a panel of State'ʹs own distinguished professors to a video conference with professors in Australia. Students were faced with the paradox in which an estimated 870 million people in the world suffer every day from malnutrition, while more than 1.7 billion people are overweight or obese. They tackled the idea that although more and more countries have access to improved drinking water, 'ʹimproved'ʹ does not necessarily mean 'ʹsafe.'ʹ The most recent seminar held in November addressed

food and fuel as competing global resources. Seminars a=racted over 200 students each month, and as the semester draws to a close students are looking forward to spring semester'ʹs Great Decisions Series Lecture Series, featured by the Foreign Policy Association and co-‐‑ sponsored by the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA). Topics, dates and panelists will be announced in early December on the website.

The International Cultural Leadership Project The International Cultural Leadership Project is an opportunity for NC State students to meet international students and participate in academic, volunteer, and cultural events around the Triangle community. This is also an incredible opportunity to practice speaking a variety of different languages with native speakers. It only requires 10-‐‑15 hours of commitment per semester, and is a ton of fun! Language exchange groups will be added during the Spring 2014 semester, and we will be continuing our exciting Mini-‐‑Series Coffee Discussions, so it is bound to be an excellent exchange. International Education Month A Worldwide Experience International Coffee and Tea International students put their best food forward in Brooks Hall as they set up tables with their favorite coffees, teas, and pastries from their home countries. With cold weather nipping at the air, these warm drinks and tasty snacks were a welcome sight for everyone who stopped by. Many nations were represented, from Egypt and Nepal to China and Japan. James Park, a sophomore in the College of Design who a=ended the event summed up his experience: “I was surprised at how many nations were represented. I hadn’t realized there were students from Bangladesh and I really enjoyed meeting everyone and cha=ing over coffee and tea. It was a good, fun environment -‐‑ trying all the food was an awesome experience.” For hundreds of students, faculty, and staff, it was a whirlwind trip around the world in one convenient stop on campus, and only one of many exciting events to celebrate International Education Month. Global Food Security

NC State Tackles the Global Issue World Food Prize 2013: Borlaug Dialogue The World Food Prize 2013 Borlaug Dialogue was held in Des Moines, Iowa October 16-‐‑18 marking a year-‐‑long centennial observance of the birth of Norman E. Borlaug. Megan Campbell, an NC State Senior in Agri-‐‑Business Management traveled to the symposium representing the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences via a student enrichment grant from the International Programs Office. Ms. Campbell describes her impressions of the symposium and what elements had significant impact to her as a student: “There were almost 1,200 people registered for this event, including CEOs and executives from worldwide companies, NGOs, Agricultural Ministers, government officials and smallholder farmers from all over the world. I was also very pleased to see NCSU faculty member, Dr. Becky Boston—it was great to see another Wolfpacker in the crowd! I a=ended inspiring meetings and met influential speakers such as Julie Borlaug, granddaughter of Norman Borlaug and Bill Cordingley , Head of Food and Agribusiness Research from Rabobank International. I also spoke with Catherine Swoboda, one of the organizers of the symposium, about adding a student roundtable event for next year allowing students an opportunity to meet with current decision makers in global food systems to give students a voice in the debate. I look forward to staying in touch with the students who a=ended this year and industry leaders I met to ensure that students have an opportunity to be involved in this amazing event. It is never too early for each generation to begin working on the food security problems facing us all.”
