Globally Integrated Students An International Campus Community IEP Launches Student Mentor Program This semester, the Intensive English Program (IEP) at NC State began its Student Mentor Program (SMP). The SMP is an effort to broaden the IEP students’ experiences on campus and in the local community. Mentors are selected from NC State undergraduate students, many who participate in the Global Perspectives Certificate Program through the Study Abroad Office. These students who demonstrate involvement on campus and in their communities are sophomores or higher in a diversity of colleges and majors and are interested in sharing American culture with international students. Under the supervision of an IEP staff adviser, mentors teach a 50 minute class each week on topics such as Fitness & Wellness, Social Media, Making A m e r i c a n F r i e n d s , a n d A m e r i c a n Holidays and Celebrations.

GTI Welcomes Over 250 Students for Fall 2013 The Global Training Initiative celebrated the start of the new school year by welcoming more than 250 students from all around the world for this new semester. Most of those students are studying at the SKEMA US campus this fall. The GTI and the new SKEMA administration welcomed more than 220 SKEMA Business School students on Wednesday, August 14. This is the largest SKEMA fall cohort to date, and it marks the first year that the SKEMA students are starting classes at the same time as NC State students. "ʺWe'ʹre glad that the students are able to participate in the same welcome activities that are available to all incoming NC State students,"ʺ said GTI Director Michael Bustle.

Globally Engaged Faculty

Jefferson Science Fellow - Dr. Jean Ristaino Professor of Plant Pathology Spends Year as Jefferson Fellow Dr. Jean Ristaino, a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology, spent the past year serving as a senior science advisor and Jefferson Fellow in the Bureau of Food Security, Office of Agriculture Research and Policy (BFS/ARP). The Jefferson Science Fellowship is administered by the National Academies and is supported by a partnership between the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The fellowship program was created in 2003 in order to engage the academic science, technology, engineering and medical community in the formulation and implementation of U.S. foreign policy to meet the needs of modern 21st century society. As a Jefferson Fellow, Ristaino spent a year in Washington DC and was involved in a wide range of global issues.

One of the global issues Ristaino worked on was human and institutional capacity development in Feed the Future countries. This included helping to launch the Borlaug Higher Education Agriculture Research Development Program and conducting a country-­‐‑wide needs assessment of agricultural research capacity in Bangladesh. As an important technical contact on the emerging coffee rust outbreaks in Central America, Ristaino was able to provide a senior level of scientific expertise ultimately resulting in becer funding decisions on managing the disease which has decimated coffee in that part of the world. Study Abroad Faculty Development Grant The Study Abroad Office is soliciting proposals now from NC State study abroad program faculty who seek funding to acend WISE: Workshop on Intercultural Skills Enhancement Conference. The deadline to submit a proposal is October 14, 2013 at 4 p.m. The announcement of decisions will be made November 4, 2013.

Announcements OIA to Host Citizenship Ceremony The Office of International Affairs will host a United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) official naturalization ceremony on campus to commemorate International Education Week. The ceremony is scheduled for November 20th from 10:00-­‐‑10:30am at the Institute for Emerging Issues (multipurpose rooms A & B) at Hunt Library on Centennial Campus. The NC State community and public are welcome to come witness more than 30 different people from around the world take oaths to become U.S. citizens. Ladies in Red, NC State’s all female a cappella group will perform the National Anthem and Dr. Bailian Li, Vice Provost for International Affairs, will give a special welcome message. The new citizens will be able to apply for their first U.S. passports immediately following the ceremony at OIA’s 10th Annual Passport Fair, also being held at Hunt Library the same day.

Study Abroad Unveils New Slogan In May 2013, the Study Abroad Office released a survey asking faculty, students, advisors, and other friends of Study Abroad to cast their vote for a new slogan. To emphasize study abroad as a truly transformative academic experience, we decided to change our official slogan ("ʺchoose your destination"ʺ) to something new. Our overall aim was to change the perception of study abroad as a "ʺtrip"ʺ and instead emphasize that study abroad is a high-­‐‑impact educational experience...in an international secing. The response was overwhelming with over 750 votes cast! "ʺMake the World Your Classroom"ʺ was the most popular and a small commicee in SAO made the final decision to make this our new slogan. The official launch of the new slogan and logo will take place on the day of the Study Abroad Fair, October 4th. Staff Spotlight Incoming IEP Director

Karin Sandler to join OIA as Intensive English Program Director October 1

The Office of International Affairs is excited to announce that Karin Sandler will be joining us as Director of the Intensive English Program beginning October 1, 2013. As the Director, she will be responsible for the operations of the program including coordinating and supervising program instruction and activities.

Karin Sandler received both her Bachelor’s in Spanish and Masters of Arts i n Te a c h i n g E n g l i s h a s a S e c o n d Language/Bilingual Education from Georgetown University. In her previous

position, she was the Associate Director of the English Language Institute at Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia where she managed the day-­‐‑to-­‐‑day operations of the Intensive English Program (IEP), which consisted of over 200 students and 20 faculty members, in addition to teaching in the program. She also had the opportunity to live and work in Japan first as an Assistant Language Teacher in the Japan Exchange Teaching Program and then as the Academic Coordinator for a n e w I E P c r e a t e d b y G e o r g e t o w n University in partnership with Osaka International University. Karin enjoys traveling, learning languages, and trying new foods.

NC State’s Global Community Top Left: The Office of International Services (OIS) welcomed nearly 1,000 new international students to campus. Separate orientations for undergraduate and graduate students were held at the McKimmon Center in August.
