What’s Up Putin’s Resorts to Populist Pandering

Read, Yulia, Read

Yulia Tymoshenko’s deputies have become very concerned about the mental intellect of their fearless leader as she sits rotting in jail. Shocked by the contents of the prison jail, they fear the hapless woman has nothing decent to read! To remedy the egregious situation, every one of her deputies have vowed to contribute a number of books to stave off the boredom and save the former Prime Minister’s dull prion days. Promising encyclopaedias, history novels, books on language and more, she will receive the books most on demand among prisoners everywhere, sending her no doubt to seventh heaven – only literally of course. Claiming Aeschylus as her favourite poet, up until now the only books poor Yulia has been able to read are portfolios from the 40s about the comings and goings of Lenin and Stalin. And while education seems to be the most important thing for the woman at the moment – not the elections, not the ‘bogus’ gas deal or even her health – she isn’t interested in becoming a professor of Soviet history either. Ironically, her prison-mates don’t seem to be too worried about the current library found at the Kharkiv jail. Yet they too will have the opportunity to engage themselves with this new influx of reading material should they wish. The question is, however, will they be able to catch Yuriy Lutsenko’s record of over 100 books since his lock-up? Either way, our current condemned Ukrainians may just be the country’s next generation of professors and polyglots! Now that’s what we call rehabilitation!

Life in NY

Ukrainian-born, New York-residing Maksim Gelman was recently sentenced to 200 years in prison for fatally stabbing four people over the winter last year. Called a sociopath by the judge hearing his case in a Brooklyn court, Gelman pleaded guilty to murder and two other charges, telling police that they had to die “because I said so”. The rampage started off in the Brooklyn home he shared with his stepfather who was stabbed to death. Obsessed with a woman by the name of Yelena Bulchenko, he then drove to her house where he found the girl’s 65-year old mother. Stabbing her to death, he then waited 9 hours with the body for her daughter to return, stabbing Yelena 11 times as she walked in. The fourth fatality was a innocent pedestrian run down during the whole affair. Uttering very little throughout the proceedings, the one thing he did say was, “I’m not the bad guy here.” Which makes us wonder who might that bad guy be?

02.indb 4

We all might know the man must be a little worried after the results of the parliamentary elections, and with the presidential elections looming it might be somewhat understandable that this brutal authoritarian might try to garner some popularity, but to do so in such a pathetic manner is really quite humourous in a sad kind of way. While at a meeting with representatives of football supporters organisations, obviously desperate to win friends and influence people at any cost, he blurted: “I don’t think Aeroflot and Transaero would lose money if we asked them to give you free planes for advertising purposes,” referring to the EURO 2012 football championships. Astoundingly, within a few hours both Aeroflot and Transaero announced that they would be putting on free, or at least heavily discounted flights, to take Russian fans to Poland in June where Russia will play its group matches. Hardly surprising really that the airlines responded so rapidly and so conformingly to the Russian prime minister’s request. But what is surprising is that he would make such an obviously vote-begging request in the first place. With two months to go before the presidential elections where he hopes to get re-elected to the top post once again, we’re left wondering what else he’ll do – free money perhaps? Free holidays to all holiday fans? Free cars for all car-lovers? “How the mighty have fallen,” has never been so appropriate.

Yanukovych Refuses to Relent while Tymoshenko Rallies

“Ukraine has become hostage to enslaving gas agreements… which have cause the country huge losses, billions of losses. We have been left with a huge external debt. Those who, regardless of office, pushed Ukraine to the edge of the abyss must bear responsibility before the Ukrainian people.” Who do you think said that this weekend? Couldn’t possibly have been Yanukovych, could it? Because if he said that he’d be wanting himself to bear responsibility before the Ukrainian people for the terrible deal he and Azarov did when they handed Sevastopil to the Russians for a further 25 years in return for nothing, right? Well, he did say this, but of course he was not talking about himself, but about Tymoshenko. How the irony is not lost on him, we do not know, but that’s the cognitive abilities of the man running this country. Regardless of the lack of logic behind his comment, he did make it clear that he was not ready to back down over Tymoshenko, and that, as long as he’s in power, she’s going to languish behind bars in Kharkiv. Quite incredibly, however, the blond bombshell countered with a powerful uppercut to the big galloots glass jaw: she called for all opposition parties to unite in a single democratic opposition force. “One team, one victory – this is the only slogan with which the opposition should arm itself today,” she declared. Unbelievably, within a few hours several opposition parties issued statements saying they would unite to field a single candidate in single-mandate constituencies at next October’s elections! Quite clearly, the woman who won’t go away simply won’t go away, and Yanukovych must be reeling over the power she can yield locked away in a dungeon in the east of the country. But as usual, it is spontaneous and badly thought through. A united opposition is of course a wonderful thing, especially when it’s the only chance we have to oust the gorilla in a suit. But what then? How could such disparate thinking get together to form a stable, workable government? And who would lead it? Tymoshenko? That would almost be as bad as what we have now.

This Week in History 29 January 1918

VIPs in the Breadline?

Philanthropy Clinton-style

‘Actions speak louder than words’ was the basic premise behind the press conference held 24 January with Chelsea Clinton here in Kyiv at the Premiere Palace hotel. Daughter of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former US President Bill Clinton, she began the afternoon sitting across famous Ukrainian musician, and mediator-for-a-day, Slava Vakarchuk, promoting her father’s charitable organisation, The Clinton Foundation. Prompting her with questions such as ‘why the average individual should get involved in charity’ and ‘what kind of satisfaction she feels after having contributed’, Chelsea answered with examples of her own, making sure the message of how important it is the younger generations give back to their communities was loud and clear. Moving on to general topics about her family, things that distract her from her work and the Internet, she opened the floor to the hundreds of Ukrainian students in attendance. A few questions, such as ‘have you heard anything about the social problems here in Ukraine’, had her thinking on her toes. More than anything, however, she got the group thinking about how students such as themselves, seemingly powerless to the system, can indeed stand up and make a difference.

India Is Calling

India, one of the world’s most exotic destinations, has recently changed its visa regime and will issue visas to Ukrainians at the airport upon arrival. Considering that there had been complaints coming from the country in question about Ukraine and the…clientele (read: prostitutes) coming over, this is an interesting ruling indeed. While it may make business a little easier for our Slavic seductresses, there are far more places of interest than the country’s bordellos. Start planning your trip now!

02.indb 5

Whereas the jolly man in the red suit brought presents to the good girls and boys of Ukraine over the holidays, his shadow persona, better known as Ukrainian hooligans, took them away. Over the course of the last two months, over a million dollars worth of goods has been quoted as stolen from family homes in the wealthy neighbourhood of Koncha Zaspa. Specifically, burglars have broken into eight houses of Ukrainian VIPs. What’s slightly ridiculous about the whole situation is the way in which the houses were looted: down through the chimney, just like old St Nic, and all in the same. Oblivious to alarm systems, bloodthirsty dogs, and the valorous police, nothing seemed to have an effect on the Christmas burglars. Oleksandr Ponomarenko, former director of one of the purportedly seediest financial institutions in the country – Nadra Bank, was one of the targets in the swindle. Sharing his grief with Ukraine he’s listed 300,000 in euros, 100,000 in dollars, 10 kilos of gold, any number of guns and many Swiss watches as missing. While it’s all a rather grave affair, the most we can offer, is a shoulder to cry on. Which, to be honest, is improbable at best. We do, however, wish him well in trying to recover the stolen goods. We’d hate to see either him or his cronies reduced to standing in the breadline with the rest of the country.

Lost Mayor Found

Our dear Leonid Chernovetsky has popped up on the radar! Like Zorro, however, he’s never seen, and instead leaves a sign that he’s been around. Calling in to ensure all is well in the city administration, that sign has been through the telephone wires. From the Cosmos (as he is so often called and for good reason), Israel or his mansion in Koncha Zaspa, he keeps tabs on his dear city. We should all feel much safer now.

Three hundred students meet with a 4,000strong Bolshevik army at the Kruty train station to defend the region just beyond the Kyiv city limits. The battle was clearly won by the massive army. However, Ukraine’s first president, Mykhailo Hrushevsky, called the Kyiv defenders heroes, and poet Pavlo Tychyna devoted an ode to them.

1 February 1939

The Delo newspaper runs a story about a group of approximately 15,000 Germans living in the small Carpathian cities of Western Ukraine. From town councils to schools, they have developed a whole society within the borders of what could have been construed, at the time, as a very unfriendly country.

27 January 1945

The Soviet army takes over occupation of the Oswiecim concentration camp and releases 7,000 prisoners. During the five years of its existence, the camp exterminates nearly 4 million people. The UN honours the memory of Holocaust victims everywhere making the day Oswiecim is demolished a day of remembrance.

31 January 1965

The Ukrainian community of New York commemorates the 46th anniversary of Ukraine’s union. In the meantime, the League of American Ukrainians celebrates the 65th anniversary of the Ukrainian News newspaper. This organisation greatly helped their fellow countrymen by opening schools, financing hospitals, establishing libraries, and supporting the revolutionary movement.

2 February – Groundhog Day

The tradition of following the groundhog’s shadow is one borne in North America. Ukrainians too have come to follow this little rodent in determining the length of their winter.

Melting Snow in Central Sofia

FEMEN were up to their old tricks again – this time in Bulgaria. While bitterly cold over the weekend, they continued to strip down to their skivvies causing a traffic jam, of mostly male onlookers, who skidded to a halt to stop traffic. The slogan for the event? Their God is a woman, their mission is protest, their weapon are their breasts!!!

Rear-view Mirror

An Epiphany

During my time in Kyiv, I’ve noticed that each Ukrainian possesses two personalities. One has the typical local sitting silently on the metro with a disaffected scowl as the token busker reaches for that high note just be-

02.indb 6

yond his vocal range. The other allows that same person to slug back mouthfuls of cognac and exhaust a shockingly large reservoir of curse words toward beloved Dynamo footballers while igniting all manner of small explosives in anger or ecstasy. Both of these

Ukrainians were on full display Thursday, 19 January during the Epiphany celebration at Hydropark. Epiphany, or Kreshsnie in Ukrainian, is the day on the Orthodox calendar when God revealed to the masses that Jesus was the true

7

messiah. The celebration last week began with a solemn religious service by the steps of a small church not far from the shashlyk tents. Ukrainians gathered to pray and turn their bottled water into holy water by way of a short blessing. Then things got nutty.

02.indb 7

Swarms of locals made their way, in typical Kyiv mob-style, past the fences to the beach for what would be a scene I could have only pictured in a Nat Geo documentary. A friend and I looked on in bewilderment as grown men and women in furry hats stripped down

to their underwear (or less) and ran full speed into the icy waters of the Dnipro on what was one of the coldest days yet this winter. They splashed, laughed, screamed and did their best to pretend this ritual was anything less than completely insane.

This Week Theatre & Classical Music

27 January – 2 February 2011

The New Face of Traviata

La Traviata (opera in 3 acts), Kyiv Theatre of Opera & Ballet for Children & Youth (Mezhyhirska 2)

27 January at 19.00

This audaciously original opera is going to surpass your antiquated opinion about this creative art form. Some may call it an artsy-fartsy whimsy of the traditional take on Traviata, but the tendency to reinvent is everywhere, and the theatre is no different. Beckoning you into the world of haute couture, this is a story of fashion where the main character is a famous model whose life is an intrepid gamble. Music by Verdi and costumes by Anzhela Lisitsa help unravel the plot in style. Tickets are 50 – 60hrv. For more information call 425-4280.

Romantic Spirits

La Sylphide, National Opera Theatre of Ukraine (Volodymyrska 50)

2 February at 19.00

The premiere of this romantic ballet took place nearly 200 years ago in the Grand Opera of Paris. Overwhelming the audience with courtly choreography and a reverberating plot, there is an air of mysticism and eminence that accompanies this ballet. A young and enigmatic spirit entices an unwitting young man, and following her into a forest of magical creation he turns his back on the woman he’s about to marry. A sorceress offers her help just in the nick of time, but alas, the story does not end there. Will there be a happy ending? Tickets are 20 – 200hrv. Smoke on the Water and Fire in the Sky Deep Purple Tribute (cover bands), Art Club 44 (Khreshchatyk 44b)

28 January at 20.00

As a country highly suspect when it comes to the government, the police and everyone else in between, we don’t see a whole lot of high profile musical acts coming through town. For that reason, garage bands have become more and more prominent. Taking the tunes of their musical heroes and honouring them with a tribute, the most recent nod goes to British music revolutionists Deep Purple. Here to play a little hard rock for Perfect Strangers everywhere are Dyadya Vasya, Tartila, Vasyl Panchuk, Hot Pants and Purple Room. Admission is 50hrv. Aspirations of Happiness

The Little Prince, Plastic Drama Theatre (Shovkovychna 7a)

28 & 29 at 19.00

Saint-Exupery created a masterpiece in The Little Prince, making it a pleasure to read for children young and old. It has been said that no matter what age, new insight can be obtained from its reading. Taking this 1943 tale to the stage, the director has opted to keep it a silent play, relying instead on the actions of his performers to tell the story. For those yet unfamiliar with the synopsis, its essence follows the actions of The Little Prince as he goes on a search for love and friendship. Will he find it? You’ll have to go and see. Tickets are 60hrv. For more information call 253-9383.

Gypsy music is enflaming, and makes people do crazy things. Take German-born Ljupco Kurcievsk, for example, whereupon hearing the Gypsy Kings for the first time in a little Spanish pub in Dusseldorf, he changed his name to Rico Sanchez and went on tour. Playing to audiences all over Europe and parts of Asia, Rico Sanchez & the Gypsies fascinate spectators with their original sound, and “turn every event into an unforgettable party”. Roman Kolyada, whose family name means “carol” in Ukrainian, grants heavenly energy to his audience at every concert he gives. While he will be playing from his first album, Look Into The Sky, this evening, this pianist, composer, poet and journalist believes that improvisation is far better than the written note. It makes music lively. Take him in and you’ll see what we mean. Tickets are 50 – 60hrv. For more information call 253-8247.

Simple Art for Simple People

Exhibition of paintings and sculptures by Gary Hume, PinchukArtCentre (Basseina 1/3-2)

4 February – 1 April

recent is called Junk of the Heart and is reminiscent of bands LCD Soundsystem, Air, and Phoenix. Coming off of a string of various other concerts cancelled in our fair city just last year, however, we suggest you keep your fingers, and all other body parts, crossed – this kooky bunch clearly need all the help they can get to get over here. Tickets are 650hrv. For more information call 288-5074.

Trying to keep his works simple to tempt even the most anti-art individual, Gary Hume, a contemporary British artist who’s been actively involved in the art world since 1989, keeps his colours bright and magnificent. What you will find upon the walls of PAC are works full of melancholic beauty incorporating extensive universal themes, from young and innocent works to sculptures of bare bodies. For more information call 590-0858.

Rhythm is Definitely a Dancer

Snap!, D’Lux (Hrushevskoho 3)

3 February at 22.00

While not completely confirmed, there has been rumour that Snap!, the German eurodance project, will soon be appearing on stage one of the city’s more distinguished clubs. While those in their 30s and 40s reminisce about the good old days when the night centred around doing Cherry Bomb shooters while telling everyone within the vicinity how you’ve got “The Power”, the rest of us will be buying up tickets. Don’t get caught in that first category. For admission prices or more information call 200-9009.

A Modern Time

Exhibition of paintings and art objects by Tiberiy Silvashi, Bottega Gallery (Mykhalivska 22b)

9 – 28 February

One of Ukraine’s best Ukrainian abstract artists, Tiberiy Silvashi, has come up with yet another original idea, and come 9 February, invites everyone out to take in his newest work, Modern Time. Rebelling against the age-old notion that art needs to be locked behind restrictive frames, Silvashi has created various objects to be placed in such a way as to jump out at you from behind the background of purple, black and white that has become the Bottega Gallery. For more information call 279-8383.

Coming to Kyiv this summer to try and resurrect a legend, this will be a tribute the likes of which you’ve never seen before and probably never will again. Hits Light My Fire, Riders on the Storm, The End and many, many more will be played tonight by original members. It’s going to be an incredible event. Tickets are 350 – 2000hrv. 20 & 21 February at 19.00

Boris Eifman ballets are not your typical plie, pas de chat or port de bras kind of evenings. Complementing the classics with modern movements, his academic theatre, set up in Saint Petersburg in 1977, receives ovations from audiences as well as the press wherever they go. Returning to the Ukrainian capital with Anna Karenina, Kyiv will be one of the first cities to feast its eyes upon this new creation. This ballet, based on the story by Lev Tolstoy, reveals the inner world of a woman tornbetween two men. Before making her final decision, the group will take you through the emotions of incredible choreography and creativity. Tickets are 250 – 2550hrv. For more information call 279-1169.

While What’s On typically covers events held in Kyiv, it’s nice to get out of the city every once in a while and see what the rest of the country has to offer. In approximately one week’s time, there’s going to be a chocolate wonderland in Lviv! Opening its doors to all of Ukraine for the fifth straight year, there are going to be plenty of yummy attractions. After creating masterpieces with the help of professional chocolate-masters, children will participate in a championship to determine whose is the most delicious! So come one, come all and fill yourself up on the sweet stuff. It only comes around once a year! Admission is free. For more information call 032-235-7788.

Hailing from New York, the next guest in this series of Addicted parties is a debutante in the party world. Contributing to the face of the NYC club scene, Vincent’s melancholic and often deliberately raw tracks are a mix of house heritage, from the early 90s right up to today. My Kyiv

The International Voice of Renat Akhmetov

One of the great things about life in Kyiv is that you come across many interesting characters as you go about your daily routine. Few can be more interesting than Jock Mendoza-Wilson, international PR man for Systems Capital Management, owned by Ukraine’s richest man, Rinat Akhmetov. And that’s what makes Jock doubly interesting. Not only has he the inside knowledge on the business workings of a man who has to be one of the most intriguing in Ukraine, he’s also a character unto himself. How long have you been here and what first brought you to Kyiv? My first ever visit was back in May 2004. I was working for a global public relations firm, and was usually involved in projects in Ukraine, Russia or Poland. I worked on a consultancy project for Systems Capital Management (SCM) from February 2005 through to October. Although I wasn’t an expert in Ukrainian or Russian, they must have liked what I did because they approached me and asked if I would consider joining the company full-time. It wasn’t a tough decision. When you see something you really enjoy doing and realise there’s a great opportunity to see it through a major change, it’s easy to make up your mind. I moved in October 2005, originally

to Donetsk where I lived essentially full-time until January of 2011, when I moved to Kyiv. How would you compare the two places? In Donetsk, the infrastructure is excellent. Parks are very good. You can walk down Pushkinskaya, under an underpass into Sherbakova Park, almost four kilometres through landscape gardens and parks alone, right into the centre of the city. The centre is also well-maintained and laid-out, and will be great for Euro 2012 and the fan zone. Investment has gone in from individuals, the city and regional authorities – a fantastic job has been done of upgrading a former Soviet city into what is a good place to live. The difference is that you are moving from a very large and industrial city, Donetsk, to the capital, Kyiv, which is significantly more cosmopolitan. Donetsk is quite international. There are about 140 nations represented in terms of residence. But you come to Kyiv and there are a lot more international people and a very Western-orientated attitude. What’s your remit at SCM, what do you do? There are three parts to the job. The first is international relations – ensuring we’ve got the right relationships and understandings with key international institutions. In Kyiv, for example, that might be with embassies of countries whose banks are investing in us or we are investing in that country. Also, good relationships with the international institutions based here in Kyiv who have a significant influence on the country’s economy – particularly the World Bank, ERD and IMF. Internationally, it’s ensuring we understand what’s going on in terms of politics, policy and the regulatory environment in key markets where we operate. The most important is probably the European Union as we export significant quantities of product there – it’s our single largest market for exports. The United States is a big player too as we have significant investments in the US, and the US, I think, has a significant influence in Ukraine’s development, as indeed does the EU. The next part is dealing with banks and institutions – investor relations. Here I often find myself explaining the political and economic environment in Ukraine, its political risk and how that impacts on business. SCM is a very big and powerful organisation, which most people know for steel. How diversified is it these days? We have a strategy of diversifying our business but we still have a lot of strengths in mining, metals and energy. We’re well known for steel through Metinvest, but equally we’re the country’s largest private sector energy business through DTEK. With Metinvest it’s an integrated mining and metals business – it mines coal, mines iron ore, produces steel and then sells and markets the steel globally and in Ukraine. On the energy side, DTEK is an integrated energy producer, it mines coal, sells it to its own power stations and other power stations, produces electricity and sells and

distributes it to the national grid plus European customers. They are our two biggest areas. Since 2005, we’ve been pursuing a policy of diversifying our investment portfolio and are also looking at areas we have identified as having long-term potential for growth in Ukraine in the future. We are in telecommunications, banking and finance, real estate, retail, ports, media, agriculture most recently, and football. Some other areas, such as clay mining, machine building and pharmaceuticals, also feature. It’s a very diverse business. The main thing is that each one of the businesses has its own management team, own identity, own structure. We act as the professional investor looking at investment opportunities, looking at investment strategy and looking at the right direction. You mentioned telecommunications. One of the big rumours over the past year is that the sale of Ukrtelecom to a Swiss holding company at a fraction of its market value, is actually a deal done by one of the country’s big oligarchs. Is it you? It’s not us, but I’ve been asked that a few times. You have a huge company with an owner known for being close to the current political administration. How at SCM do you view the current situation with regards to the move towards the West or the East? The first thing is that it’s not a zero-sum game. It’s not a direct choice between Europe and Russia. But from our point we are strongly supportive of Ukraine’s European direction, and we’ve been supportive of the deep and comprehensive free-trade agreement. We don’t see that as exclusive of having good strong trading relationships with Russia, which is also very important for our business. Sometimes people present it as one or the other, but we don’t believe that should be the case. You should have a strong relationship with Europe and take the advantages that exist of using the transformational aspect of getting closer to European standards to drive the changes in your economy. But of course you are going to trade with your existing partners in Russia and the East. The vast majority of Ukrainian people would be very much in favour of being in the EU. Would you agree? I believe that’s correct. You definitely get the sense that’s the direction people in Ukraine want to go. It’s what they aspire to, particularly when it comes to visas. They wonder why Europe doesn’t let them in and quite rightly find that a very difficult situation. For the past few years, European integration hasn’t really been a political issue in that all the parties have agreed it. Economically, all parties have followed this idea of a deep and comprehensive free-trade area. From a business point of view, it’s good for business – we are deeply invested in the EU with two steel plants in Italy, one in Bulgaria, one in the UK and businesses in Switzerland.

How do you feel about the recent distancing between Ukraine and the EU, which has come about over the situation with Tymoshenko? From a business perspective, we don’t get involved in politics or the judicial system. The reaction from the EU is disappointing but understandable. If the government thought the EU wouldn’t use its soft power, they are now seeing that it is doing so. I hope a resolution will be swiftly affected, which will allow Ukraine to continue speedily in the European direction. There are also rumours there is distance growing between the current administration and SCM. Is this true? At SCM, I can say firmly that we don’t have relationships exclusively with any political party. I’ve been here long enough to have had two presidents and I think four prime ministers, one of whom twice. If you attach your wagon as a business to a specific political party it’s a recipe for failure. You have to work with any party and government in power at the time, and do so on a professional basis. We were able to have constructive working relationships with the previous government as well as this one. What are your thoughts around the shoring up of power around Yanukovych we’ve been witnessing recently? Is there a democratic beliefset within SCM or would it rather simply have a stable government? From our point of view, as a business, we want to be distant from and independent of politics. Governments come and go, the most stable form of government is democracy and from our point of view as a business, the best thing we can have in Ukraine is a stable, democratic government. You also need an independent judiciary system, as with any country in the EU. That’s currently a weakness in Ukraine, with the freedom to act outside the influence of any government agency or politician including presidents or prime ministers. Furthermore, you need a free media, which is able to be responsible in the way in which it reports. And then you need protection of private property rights. If you’ve got something and you own it, there shouldn’t be any way it can be removed from you other than by true breach of law. Ukraine, compared to some other post Soviet countries, has come a long way in achieving these objectives, and it’s very important it continues on that journey. We, as a company, can in many ways only be as good as the country in which we operate. We’re a Ukrainian company, we’re here and we want a good Ukraine which will be part of the country’s development and part of our development. Can you comment on ongoing problems such as corporate raiding, which still takes place on businesses, and the effect that must have on investment? Clearly, if you look at Ukraine’s standing in global indexes such as competitiveness, corruption and

My Kyiv transparency, the country is not moving forward as it should be, and as a result is not getting the foreign investment it should. This is directly related to issues such as independence of the judiciary and the protection of private property rights. For SCM, is inward investment a good thing? Very much so. SCM is over 11-years old now and we’ve spent a lot of time structuring our business so it runs like and is like a European-style business in terms of corporate governance, investment and the move towards competitiveness. We don’t have anything to fear from foreign investors coming into Ukraine, quite the opposite. There are limits as to how much any single business can drive change forward. Even if you’re as big as we are, you need more people who have the same viewpoint and the same values. This is particularly likely if you have international investors. It will create a change in the economy and a change in process. They’ll invest in education and training for their people, they’ll invest in the right facilities and do business in the right way. Foreign direct

for Ukraine as it’s been in every other developing country. We like to see people who have amassed these massive fortunes giving something back. What is SCM’s direction regarding CSR? Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is about running your business in the right way for those who work for you. In our business where we have significant investment in mining and metals, the number one priority has to be safety. We invest in equipment but more importantly in training, as Health and Safety is also a cultural issue. Even if you have all the right technology and equipment, if people’s minds aren’t in a place where safety is first, you won’t be effective. We have a big investment in the training and development of people and we’re trying to push up salaries. It’s a very important objective for business – to improve efficiency and pay people more for doing a better job. Already our employees are in the upper 50% of payment in each industry category and we want to move that further on as well as giving them good

"We are strongly supportive of Ukraine’s European direction. We don’t see that as exclusive of having good strong trading relationships with Russia" investment will be a significant multiplier effect; it won’t just be the money that comes in, it will be the learning, the knowledge, the processes and the attitudes. It will make a significant difference and we have probably the biggest business in Ukraine so we’ll benefit from that. If Ukraine becomes a more successful, wealthier and more developed nation we’ll be able to have better housing for employees, increased salaries, better training, healthcare and so on. A successful Ukraine is bound to be good for SCM. And that success would be increased by having investment come in because there isn’t sufficient investment available in Ukraine to make these transformational changes at the moment. The government has recognised this and is taking some steps: they’re doing a road-tour at the moment telling people about national investment projects. No one’s ever done this before. I wish them great success. You mentioned that the SCM group incorporates media. What does that include, and are they independent? Television, newspapers and internet. And yes, they are. We have a TV channel, Ukraina, one of the leading free-to-air terrestrial channels; we’ve got the football channel; we’ve got Sevodna, our best-known newspaper and a leading mid-market Ukrainian newspaper; along with a number of regional newspapers in the Donetsk area. Then we have tochka.net, one of the main internet portals. Media is a really promising direction for the future

02.indb 20

conditions. As a leader, it’s important to show an example and I think we do that. Then there are other areas, such as our shareholder Mr Akhmetov, who has put $50 million into founding the Foundation for Effective Governance. It uses Ukrainian and international experts to debate, discuss and develop policy on what is the right reform direction for Ukraine. In addition, there is Mr Akhmetov’s personal foundation for the development of Ukraine that invests in hospitals, looking at how to improve cancer treatment, TB treatment, helps with cultural projects and works to construct and support children’s homes and hospitals. There are not many other companies doing as much to give back to the Ukrainian economy both in sustainability of business and investing in people. Akhmetov has spent a lot of money on the Donetsk football stadium, and EURO 2012 is coming. There is an issue of lack of accommodation, however. How do you think things will play out? If I had the choice of somewhere to go and watch EURO 2012, I’d go to Donetsk. The infrastructure is in place and they have experience in moving 55,000-plus football fans around, as Shakhtar gets those crowds for big Ukrainian and Champions League games. It’s tried, tested and it works. Accommodation is the biggest challenge for Ukraine and is certainly a challenge in Donetsk, but a number of hotels have been re-

furbished to a good standard. We ourselves are in the process of completing the refurbishment of a mid-range hotel we acquired, Park Inn by Radisson. It’s a good quality 3-star hotel of which there are too few. Of course we have the Donbass Palace, which will be taken over by UEFA. I think Ukraine in general has done enough to host the tournament successfully. What’s important for it to be a real success is what the attitude of the people will be – the police, border control and security services. Will they give a warm welcome to people, be able to handle large volumes, most of whom will be coming here for the first time and probably won’t understand Cyrillic or speak Russian or Ukrainian? How is business going for SCM following the financial crisis? Last year had been a good year but then last summer changed that in a way. What happened was another crisis in confidence in the European economy. The European economy is very important – if it catches a cold, America gets the sniffles and there’s a reduction in growth in China. That situation will be compounded if there isn’t a resolution to the crisis in the Eurozone. What started as a banking crisis, as countries bailed out their banks and saw reduced receipts so their debt increased, is now a sovereign debt crisis. That creates a crisis in the real economy, as either confidence is lacking or adjustment methods to deal with the crisis are reducing economic growth. Taking those factors of uncertainty, in terms of currency and economic growth, you find yourself in a position where Europe’s growth is predicted to be negligible in the coming year. That then impacts not just the EU but on other successful trading blocs such as the US and China. It will be less severe if the Euro crisis can be resolved and confidence can be restored in the Euro. If confidence in the Euro disappears and more countries find themselves having to take emergency measures and even leaving the Euro, it will get worse. Do you see any chance of Ukraine defaulting? No, not at present. Although things would be better if Ukraine were to be able to agree a stability pact with the IMF and have renewed access to IMF funding. To wrap things up, what things do you like to do here in Kyiv? I still enjoy learning about Kyiv. It’s the nature of my job that I travel both here and internationally. When I do have time, I like going to the gym and taking my two daughters to their swimming lessons. I like shopping in the market, buying my fruit and vegetables and cooking at home. I love going out to restaurants for dinner, a couple of my favourite are Vernissage and Teatro Restaurant in the Opera Hotel. I like the Hyatt for brunch on Sunday and Shooters is great for a family lunch. I’m married with kids so tend to do a lot of family stuff. My days of late-night clubbing are over!

The Artistic Education of Kyiv’s Beau Monde

KINOPANORAMA Before the official opening of her exhibition, Ukrainian artist Marfa Vasyleva opted to gather the city’s celebs for a preview of her photos, telling them a little bit about what art means to her in the process. While guests wandered and wondered, this modest artistic authority made it clear that art is much more than money and selfimportance. It’s about spirituality, and how, in this case anyhow, the purpose behind modern life has become lost. We can only hope the stars learned a good lesson on 22 January. The rest of the city will have to wait until the spring for their lesson.

Walking Through Fire for a Better Future

KINOPALATS Ukrainian filmmaking has a long history. But for the last couple of decades there has, to be honest, been little done. A recent film, by Ukrainian director Mykhalo Illyenko called Fire Crosser, hopes to change that. Presented on 19 January, to a clan of cinematic enthusiasts, most everyone in the theatre seemed rather impressed. Without any help at all from abroad, the picture makes fast tracks in the direction of American and European standards, and just as the main hero, walks through fire in order to prove that Ukrainian filmmaking is nowhere near dead.

The film’s hero, actor Dmytro Linartovych together with Oleh Primohenov

Plenty to say about Ukraine in tweets this week, some sincere, some perhaps a little sarcastic: @vitaliidemchuk You know what? Kyiv subway is hot! @ Метро «Палац Спорту» @rcknr Just 500 euro for a week in a football camp? What a marvellous deal! @toylike Foodtourist is the hottest spot in Kyiv right now. @UlianaTitarenko Today in Kyiv ...Amazing all around you @OlgaZbarazskaya Such a good evening and romantic walking through the snowy Kyiv Fancy following us? Be our guest! Go to @WhatsOn_Kyiv Dear Graham, My husband and I have just moved here from the UK. I must say, I’m already having issues with the weather – but that’s not my question. I was wondering where a couple such as ourselves might be able to head so as not to have ladies of the night eyeing up my husband on an almost constant basis. I actually like Kyiv, despite the fact that we’ve been bombarded with an overwhelming amount of white stuff almost overnight and no one seems to care enough to clean it off the streets. However, I refuse to have my husband eyed up like a piece of meat when we go out – even if he does enjoy it. Thoughts? – name and age withheld Dear Anonymous, That’s a good question. It sounds like your husband is an absolute hunk! Yes, you are correct, Kyiv ladies’ are renowned for not taking prisoners with such hot stuff. Therefore I suggest that’s exactly what you do – take your husband prisoner. Quite simple really, a few reinforced bars over the window (many Kyiv apartments already come with these) and a door sturdy enough to withstand heavy kicking, again mostly already there. For further information I suggest you watch the film Misery with Kathy Bates and James Caan, very much a beginner’s guide on prisoner-taking. You are certainly in the right country for that anyhow, if it’s good enough for the President... Best, Graham

What’s Hot

A

few Fridays ago I took a swift trip to London, having had my camera pick-pocketed here in Kyiv on the Wednesday just prior. It had happened after a particularly lovely day on Andriivskiy Uzviz. However, it must be said that on reflection, perhaps I’d posed a little too keenly with some of the military paraphernalia on said street. A particular photo of me and a World War Two whip springs to mind as potentially compromising any position of public office I may wish to hold in future. This, and the immediate opportunity to upgrade in London, took the edge off the loss. Nor is it to say that pick-pocketing is an especial problem in Kyiv, and that it wasn’t just muggins’s own fault for having it precariously perched in an outside jacket pocket. I resolved thus forth to place only teaching materials in outside pockets. As most of my students are at upper-intermediate level and my understanding is that most pick-pockets are intermediate at best, any such crime would at worst be fruitless for them and at best aspirational. In fact, I had those very materials sticking out of my jacket pocket the next day at the airport when a nearby pas-

senger who had clearly calmed his nerves a little pre-flight told me to watch out for them. Good advice. Sadly neither present when it had mattered or still able to be regarded in the same light when the bottom of his carrier bag collapsed seconds later dumping its duty-free contents onto the departure lounge tiling. The flight afforded the opportunity to reflect on pick-pocketing itself with my chum Chris. I recall pick-pocketing in 80s London being somewhat of a threat. Yet in recent years the announcements and posters warning of such have taken on a rather half-hearted tone. No one really pick-pockets now. It’s like purchasing posters from Athena or music from Our Price – indelibly 80s/early 90s. I had been the victim of a retro crime. Chris and myself reflected on this gentleman’s likely next course of action. Perhaps he called by a haberdashery on his way home whilst listening to his walkman, doubtless dreaming one day of carrying out that hit on the mail train. In his own school for scoundrels, he must be somewhat of a slouch with peers having long since moved on to cybercrime and credit-card cloning. In London, Chris and I had a day around the sights before going for a beer in the French House Pub. Chris has a rather impressive SLR camera, which he was wearing around his back as we sipped at the bar. After some minutes, a wizened pub denizen approached him and uttered, “You see that camera, I could have dipped (stolen) it four time already.” He shook his head and continued, “Wearing it around your back like that you are an absolute idiot,” before shuffling off. So pick-pocketing is out but insulting strangers in pubs – that never goes out of fashion!

A week that saw Ukrainians throwing themselves into the freezing Dnipro also had topless protesting at the Indian Embassy. Brrrrrr!

Visiting your Native Land

I’m going there this weekend, which makes me almost unique in terms of Ukrainians I know. Are they right not to visit? Watch this space!

Prices of beer at venues in Kyiv. 48hrv for a little over half a pint of bog-standard lager at a wellknown central Kyiv venue not too far from Bila?? Seriously??

Flying Russians

Reports are that Russian fans are to be flied for free to their team’s games at Euro 2012. And for those Ukrainians looking to make the possibly arduous trip to Donetsk or Kyiv? Not even a train, a bus!
