What’s Up Terminal D Opens! But is it Really Ahead of Schedule?

Ukraine is sometimes a country of industrious and hard-working people, or at least, that's how Prime Minister Azarov would like the world to see us. This week he went public, declaring Terminal D completed and should be ready to open its doors within the next couple of weeks. He even went so far as to say the new terminal was already going through tests with fake travellers. However, we're not sure who he's trying to kid, as we have it on good authority that the terminal will open only temporarily during EURO 2012 and then close again for completion.

Hockey – A Lethal Sport

Hockey is a tough sport. In addition to the incredible cardio and strength it takes to get through a game, there are the flying pucks, the razor-sharp skates and the fights. If any of those things don’t kill you, there’s the psychological pressure; something you would think to be more associated with the players than the coaches. Not so it seems, as Ukrainian hockey coach Ivan Pravilov was recently found dead of a suspected suicide in Philadelphia on 10 February. Charged with child-molestation, Pravilov had been in custody since Homeland Security agents arrested him in January. He was a mentor to several NHL players currently playing in the league, including Dainius Zubrus of the New Jersey Devils. And yet this charge will have come as little shock. Many of the kids who were part of the elite hockey school he ran in Ukraine or the camps conducted in the US after his arrival in 2007 said his methods included physical, emotional and sexual abuse. A former player of his, Maxim Starchenko, has even written a book about Pravilov called, Behind the Iron Curtain: Tears in the Perfect Hockey Gulag. The former hockey coach was indicted after he supposedly brought home two 14-year old Ukrainian boys, where he allegedly fondled one during the night and threatened the other the next day. Pleading not guilty, he was jailed in a two-man cell in a regular prison unit. Irene Zubriene, mother to Dainius, considered him a close friend, and blames the arrest on lingering rivalries from Ukraine. His death is another question entirely.

Only Those with the Big Bucks Need Apply

Becoming a deputy of the Kyiv Rada ain’t cheap. In fact it will cost you a cool 5,000,000hrv. Apparently, this sum is meant to cover the organisation of tents, advertising and payments to observers during the elections, which is not very much at all, especially if owning a little piece of Kyiv – property, land, the works – is in your sights. At least that’s the way analyst Oleksandr Karasyov sees it. No parsimony is permitted when discussing the millions due those with a seat in government! Elections are planned to take place this autumn. So, deputies-to-be, start cutting costs on those luxury goods and start the day with a good helping of grechka. You’re going to need your strength to make it through the whole fiasco!

New Digits

It’s alarming, and also a little scary, that 74% of Europeans do not know what number to call in Europe in case of an emergency, so says a survey published on the official EU website. For many Western European countries that number is 112. Here in Ukraine, at least for the moment, that number is 103. However, European Commission Vice Presidents Neelie Kroes and Siim Kallas have initiated a campaign to ensure that every European country implements the 112 emergency services as soon as possible. With EURO 2012 fast approaching, hundreds of thousands of visitors will be headed our way. Ukraine has committed to introducing the 112 number in host cities (Donestk, Kharkiv, Kyiv and Lviv) by the beginning of the championships.

Azarov Plays Russia Off Against the EU

Azarov has been shifting his players around rapidly in his three-way chess game over the past week, first of all telling Russia, again, that Ukraine will not join the Moscow-led customs union. “Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan signed all accords without us,” Azarov told journalists Saturday in Kyiv. “We offered to use the formula three-plus-one, but we were told that such a format is not suitable.” He added that he hoped the format will eventually be accepted “because it is the only possible way”. Shortly after this, he turned his face west, declaring, on a quick jaunt to Riga, that the technical initiation of the free trade agreement between Ukraine and the EU could take place in coming months. He stressed the importance of this agreement to both Ukraine and the EU saying, “The interests of our cooperation are strategic interests and they should prevail over a variety of temporary circumstances.” All this of course simply translates as – I’ve told Russia ‘no’ for the time being, but you’d better sign this agreement with us even if Tymoshenko’s still in jail or I may well change my mind. Quite clearly, he and his idiot boss still hope the Tymoshenko situation will be forgotten. Quite clearly, he and his idiot boss do not understand what they’re doing.

Kids Robbed

We hate to hear about people being robbed. We hate hearing that it's been done by our own members of parliament even more! And while heartbreaking accounts such as these involving teachers, miners and businessmen have been hitting the news left, right and centre lately, this most recent story, targeting school children, takes the cake. Recalling stories about the quality of nutrition in Ukrainian school cafeterias last year, where heavy metals were found in the food, the Ukrainian government opted to grant 4,000,000hrv to make improvements. We here at What’s On assumed that our deputies were finally trying to do good by the kids, the country’s future generation, but we all know what happens when you ass-u-me. Unfortunately, we look like the backside of a donkey right about now as the money, every single hryvnia and kopek, has been stolen. With EURO 2012 coming our way and improvements being made in the country at a decent pace, it seemed as though those at the top might have, for once, been getting it right. It looks as though some things, however, will never change. Here’s hoping you can sleep at night dear delegates.

When we say that our authorities are the most talented in the world, we mean it! The most ardent example being the CD released by our dear Chernovetsky for Christmas 2009. If you didn't buy the disc – shame on you! Not only have you missed out on hours of listening pleasure, you’ve missed out on the charity too, as a certain percentage of all sales were to go to assisting the city’s elderly, most notably the mayor’s babushkas. The city’s commander-in-chief, however, is not the only one with thriving talent. His righthand man, Oles Dovhiy, has recently been seen alongside stars Iryna Bilyk and TIK in a new music video. It is a sweet clip, it has to be said, about the fragility of feelings. For Dovhiy, perhaps he associates this with the vulnerability he feels being a part of the country’s elite ranks. Just Checking In

European and North American ambassadors, along with a number of international medical organisations have become increasingly worried about Yulia Tymoshenko’s health. So much so they sent in an application to the Prosecutor General’s office requesting she be examined by an independent medical team. Conducted by five German and Canadian doctors of differing specialities, they were given access to the former Prime Minister in Kachanivska Penal Colony No 54 in Kharkiv on 13 February. What happens next is anybody’s guess.

Accompanied by the Kyiv Classic Ukrainian Orchestra, this nineGrammy Award winning tenor will give a twohour performance on Sophiivska Ploscha. In addition to his well-known arias from famous operas, there is even talk of a Ukrainian element with a Ukrainian soprano! Incredible!

The Ukrainian Soviet Encyclopaedia is published in full. The team of authors includes 100 professionals led by Kharkiv chairman Mykola Skrypnyk and later by Volodymyr Zatonsky. Russian and English translations of the first edition are published two years later.

The tryzub (or trident) is adopted as the national coat of arms of Ukraine. This symbol’s history can be traced back to the Rurik dynasty, where it was found on coins, ceramics, weapons, medallions and manuscripts of the 10 – 11th centuries. Many variations have presented themselves throughout the years. The basic structure, however, has remained the same.

Serhiy Bubka, Ukrainian pole-vaulter, sets the indoor world record at 6.15 metres in Donetsk. Bubka goes on to set the outdoor record of 6.14 metres in Italy the next year. He has been voted the world’s best athlete numerous times.

Taking 2,455,028 orders in last year alone, the McDonalds located at the Kyiv train station is a popular place, winning second most visited out of more than 33,000 locations worldwide! Americans can no longer be accused of being the only junk food addicts. Not only has this particular McDonalds location been one of the busiest over the last six years, another nine of these fast food joints located throughout Ukraine are included in the Top 100! What is Kishe? A popster? A rockster? A TV host? A DJ? An MC? A bandleader? The answer is all of this. But above all, he is a star. He popped into the What’s On office this week for a chat about what he’s been up to and what’s coming next, sending all the girls into a regular tizzy.

ishe has a presence, there’s no doubt about it. I’d seen him at the YUNA awards and you could just tell, he’s a big deal. Photographers flocked round him and people just knew they were in the presence of a ‘someone’. It all made meeting him the next day that much more fascinating.

Back to the Beginning

True, he was late, but not in a ‘star’ way. More in a ‘stuck in traffic way’, we’ve all been there. He takes a seat and cracks out an iPad, putting his iPhone on the seat next to him, which rings pretty regularly throughout the interview. My apologies to those who were calling, but Kishe was giving What’s On all of his attention for a full 90 minutes. As for the iPad, that’s mainly used for showing me his videos. He does this in his boyish way, excited by what he has created. What we look at is an impressive body of work, hit tracks such as Zabyud, Tonka Nit, successful collaborations such as Na Grani with Polina Griffiths, mini-epics such as the track Siluety Zabitikh Snov and fully-fledged epics such as the recent Gorod, with video ambitions increasingly moving towards movies. So, how did it start? “In 2003, I had my first experience on the big stage. It was a festival of musicians. As part of the festival there were competitions for rock and pop acts. I took first place and that was the start of the Kishe project. The real start though, was in 2006 with my debut album and my new job as the host of the M1 channel.” Before that though, how did it begin? “I was born into a musical family. My elder brother was

The Hungarian Gypsy Symphony Orchestra is the most renowned gypsy orchestra the world has ever come across, with the story of its creation as wonderful as its music. Sandor Jaroka, one of the most famous gypsy soloists, died in 1985 with musicians from all over Hungary attending his funeral. Inspired by the master, they began to play, and an orchestra was born right then and there. Not one to sit back and take things lightly, What’s On got in touch with a doctor to see if we couldn’t remedy the situation. He came up with a cure to heal all the aches and pains of winter. It comes in the form of ballet.

Ballet – Winter’s Antibiotic

“P

rolific” Russian choreographer Boris Eifman is bringing one of his newer creations, Anna Karenina, to the Ukrainian capital. Having toured Greece, Finland, France, the Netherlands and Italy throughout last year, he and his troupe head to the UK after their short stint here in Kyiv. It’s going to be an incredible performance. But then the embodiment of ingenuity, so typical of Eifman’s ballets, is nothing new. His shows always bring in a full house, which we’re chalking up to the restorative power that is ballet.

Instant Recognition

I heard about Boris Eifman a few years ago when a friend mentioned what a great choreographer he was. Witnessing all the commotion that was made about him coming to town, I decided to tag along and see first-hand what all the fuss was about. I can’t tell you how impressed I was. In fact, it has made waiting for Eifman this time round even harder than waiting out this dreadful winter. Fortunately, despite his tight schedule, he always finds time for Kyiv. Perhaps the reason this city has such a pull is attributed to a bit of nostalgia.

He does confess, after all, that Kyiv replenishes him with a spiritual energy essential for every artist. “Kyiv was the city in which I debuted back in 1977. The performance was a striking success and allowed us to break from the path of traditional choreography. It became the start-up for future plans.” Having staged more than 40 pieces, all in different genres, the result is always the same. You might be watching his chamber ballet Metamorphoses, his ballet bouffe – Love Plots, or stage adaptations of Idiot or The Master and Margarita. Whatever he does, his work is recognisable and his signature unchanged – emotional explosion. Spreading creativity among troupes throughout the world, the Korean National Ballet with assistance from the Staatsballett in Berlin was given the rights to the ballet Tchaikovsky. Permission to show the ballet coming to Kyiv, Anna Karenina, has also been given to local troupes in Almaty, Tokyo and Vienna, and under the guidance of the Russian chorographer, has gathered audiences in eager anticipation. “I believe the more interpretations and visions of one work of art we’ve got the better. People’s interest in any particular piece increases as the cultural range of possibilities expands.” Using this as his foundation, Boris Eifman has become a choreographer who notices the unseen and reveals that which is often hidden.

Soviet Men’s Day doesn’t really mean much to me. As for the modern man here, I wouldn’t complain too much about him, the standard is ok. This is a gay bar, it’s always busy and there’s a wide range of guys, some being better than others. The guys here are starting to feel like they are able to express themselves, and aren’t afraid of the consequences. That’s good.

The modern Ukrainian man needs to express himself more. He needs to be more open to new ideas. I’m not sure if things are getting better where they are concerned. Sometimes I think so, but other times I have my doubts. At least being ‘out’ isn’t as big a deal as it used to be. I’m happy to give you my name and have my photo taken – that should tell you something.

There’s room for improvement with the modern, post-Soviet man. I’d like to see him a little better educated, perhaps a little better dressed and definitely able to express himself more freely – to show some soul! Some guys here think it’s a weakness, to have feeling, to show emotion. Maybe that was the Soviet culture. But that was before my time. I’m a modern, Ukrainian gay guy. With Soviet Men’s Day coming up on 23 February, we at What’s On were keen to get a view of the modern Soviet man. Rather than just ask the local ladies, as would be customary, we decided to take advantage of Kyiv’s booming gay scene.

I’m not going to say things for the modern, post-Soviet man are terrible. That’s not the case at all. But there are some problem areas. Red Army Day is kind of ironic these days, and doesn’t mean a whole lot. Those times have gone. But in some ways their influence remains. Guys still seem a bit constricted, afraid of expressing themselves. There are a lot of guys here but I know there are more who haven’t yet come out, and there’s still some negative sentiment about that, kind of a ‘traditional male’ mentality. Things are getting better for sure, but I’d like to see guys being a bit more creative with their look, a bit more stylish, not just slumming it in jeans and t-shirts – make some effort!

I go to England, around Europe and I see a different kind of man. Freer, more confident, more able to give of himself and because of all of these qualities, more attractive!

Famous Indian/British artist Anish Kapoor, laureate of The Turner Prize and one of 13 members of the New British Sculpture group, is bringing his works to Kyiv this spring. Anish’s sculptures are monochromic stateof-the-art pieces, brightly coloured and feature curves that create a feeling of softness even in the most solid object. As an innovator who introduced urban materials like concrete and steel to sculpture, a big part of his popularity came when he joined up with the New British Sculpture group in the 80s. Add the fennel and mix. Slice the salmon into thin, bite-size pieces. Set both aside. Chef Natalia says you should keep an eye on the paste. Once bubbles begin appearing on the surface it is ready. Heat butter in a large skillet on medium, until melted. Add oil and whisk gently. Chef Natalia recommends first skimming the top of your paste. Pour a small amount into the pan. For the optimum, lace-like pancake, cook until bubbles appear on the surface. Flip with a spatula, and cook until browned on the other side. Continue until all paste has been used. With a nice heap of flapjacks in front of you, spoon a small amount of the cheese mixture into the middle of each. Lay a piece or two of salmon on the cheese. Roll. Cut into two and trim with lemon slices and parsley. Serve immediately – the smell alone is to die for!

GERMAN EMBASSY On 7 February, the German Embassy held a celebration to mark its 20th anniversary here in Ukraine, when in February 1992, Hennecke Graf von Bassewitz became the newly-independent country’s first ambassador. GOETHE INSTITUT In trying to help educate the masses, the Goethe Institute hosted an evening with famous Ukrainian writer Serhiy Zhadan on 8 February. While getting the chance to listen to this incredible author was itself a pretty big deal, the focus was the closing of the Best German Language Lesson contest open to all students registered at the Institute. Take Me Out! Silver Lining: a metaphor for optimisim in the common English langauge. It's an idea that often comes in handy living here in Kyiv.

t’s Saturday night, it’s snowing and I’m headed to the airport to pick up my future husband. That sounds bad. We do actually know each other, quite well in fact. He’s just coming in from a trip abroad and I’m on my way to fetch him. Anyway, I’m driving and it’s snowing. The white stuff is coming down so hard I feel like I’m on the USS Enterprise flying across some otherworldly galaxy. Pulling into the airport, I pick up the package, and we are headed back into town at warp speed. Our first stop is dinner. There’s a relatively new eatery in town and I’m all about ensuring this first night together in quite awhile is special. Parking the car across the street, we take our lives into our own hands and jaywalk across to the other side of the street. We’re headed to a place I have only ever heard good things about – Serebro.

Mutual Understanding

While it’s not Canada cold outside, it’s fairly nippy and so I feel kind of sorry for the two guys standing at the door. I’m assuming they’re the restaurant’s door service and I flash my brightest smile uttering good evening to both. Rather than do what I simply assumed they’d been hired for, however, which is open the door and offer return wishes for a pleasant evening, I am refused entry.

The Silver Lining I’m, we’re, standing at the front door of a restaurant at which I’d like to exchange money for food. I’m clean, I’m sober and I’m being polite. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to matter to the two henchmen who tell me the problem is my winter boots. “We have a dress code,” they say. “I didn’t realise there was a dress code,” I answer. I’m not one for conflict, but I’m also not going to stand outside and argue, and so shoot back with “It’s the middle of one of the coldest winters on record and you’re telling me the boots I’m wearing, the things keeping me from losing toes to frostbite, are what’re keeping us from coming in?” There are more words exchanged and the administrator gets called over. A moment passes. We look at each other wondering whether we should just go somewhere else when we are ushered in. I attribute it to good old-fashioned common sense. I’m not sure

lord but the trouble with that is that those services comes at a premium price and also a slight feeling that you are copping out. My Russian wasn’t good then – it probably still isn’t but I do try – however I figured it might be just about good enough to get by living with a Ukrainian family. This would be how things should be, going native, improving my language, getting to know the people. I imagined family meals, photos of times of yore and I’ll be darned if I didn’t think me and the husband may well bond over a few vodkas and limited understanding of each other. I duly found a family in Obolon, a young couple with a one-year old. She seemed ok, not brilliant but ok. He mostly hung around in the background while she did the negotiating, he also seemed ok. In any case, it was clear they were rather poor and in my mind at that time I connected that with humble, decent. I took the room, paid for a month in advance and another month to show goodwill. This was Sunday evening. Monday morning at 8am she was knocking at my door asking me for more money. In shock, I handed over another wedge. It didn’t get any better. Soon there were requests for urgent payments to purchase medicine for the different-degrees-of-ill son. These were delivered either in person or if I was away by text. I ended up fleeing out the door in the dark of night, chastened, poorer, wiser.

decent place to live is right at the core of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. For most, including myself, it’s one of the more difficult things to find in Kyiv. Some don’t need to – if you’re over here on a contracted gig you’ll likely have a sweet city centre apartment laid on for you; one trying very hard to be Western but perhaps still slightly like a set from the 80s sitcom Bread. If you’re a teacher for a language school you will have a less sweet and far less central apartment afforded you. You will likely turn up and find they’ve laid out a few basic provisions for you – bread, bleach and so on. It’s nice but does make you feel a bit like you’ve been human-trafficked. The rest of us take our chances in the open market. Back in 2010, I stayed in a central hostel for a little while, getting to know the city before deciding on a course of action. I had made a few Ukrainian friends and in the first place went down the potential flat-sharing route. That didn’t work. Flat-sharing among friends is done here, it’s just not as widely done as it is in London where professionals happily co-habit with housemates into their 30s. Friends sent me a few links to websites so I decided to pursue that. Of course, I could have gone through an English-speaking agent and got a flat with an English-speaking land-
