Capital Gets New Insignia

The city of Kyiv has been hard at work trying to come up with a new logo. Enlisting the help of its citizens, they are looking for something “worthy of the city, that is professional and has been elected objectively”. What an interesting idea! Professional, objective elections? We’re slightly surprised such a concept even exists in this country. But, back to the story at hand. Take a look at the designs, all of which are extremely colourful, at www.newlogo.kiev.ua. Should you feel so inclined, you may even cast your vote, yourself becoming a part of the process!

Justice Be Done

Ukraine has once again demonstrated serious deficiencies in its ability to act in the interest of the law. Over 13 years ago, Russian citizen Vyacheslav Savin was summoned by the police to the Dzerzhynsky district department of police in Kharkiv. He was questioned, imprisoned and tortured, leaving him disabled for life, says the Inyurpolis Law Firm. “The prosecutor’s office investigated this case for more than 10 years. Finally, the statute of limitations established for such cases by Ukrainian law ran out and those responsible for torturing Savin and violating his right to freedom evaded a just punishment,” said ILF. Filing a case in 2007 with the European Court of Human Rights in reference to the “ineffective investigation”, they recently found for the plaintiff, and ordered that he be paid compensation in the amount of 450,000hrv by the State of Ukraine. Congratulations Vyacheslav, justice has been done. However, we suggest you file for the money now. It’s highly unlikely those at the top will part with such a sum so easily.

Not a Psycho

Our dear mayor, Leonid Chernovetsky, has been appearing a lot in the news lately. Returning after a short hiatus from the press with his new, 19-year old wife, he gave an interview recently to Komsomolska Pravda in which he blames the media for creating such a bad image of him. “I shouldn’t have bared my soul in front of all those unfair journalists. They stripped pieces from my addresses trying to demonstrate that I might have some kind of impaired mental capacity.” Nicknames such as Cosmos certainly haven’t added to his reputation, it’s true. They have, however, got him into the news on a pretty regular basis while serving the city. Fed up with the rumours surrounding his mental health, he comes down pretty hard on the media saying, “Freedom of the press does not exist in Ukraine.” With a date for civic elections yet to be formally decided, they will happen at some point this year. Chernovetsky says he does not want to be remembered as the man who bought voters buckwheat. But rather, the man who created jobs. “I have been one of your most active parliamentarians. I created thousands of jobs, one of the most successful banks and helped hundreds of young business managers.” Yes, our current mayor is a very pertinent player in the city’s politics. The fact that he’s ever slightly delusional only makes him that much more fascinating.

Ukrdim a Restaurant?

Representatives of the State Administration met recently with Kyiv’s Council for City Planning, where one of the pieces of business discussed was the rebuilding of Ukrdim on European Square. Motivated by the lack of profit the building currently brings in, the new underground entrance and extension of the building itself would mean complete demolition of the current cultural heritage site. Chairman of the city council for Tourism and Culture, Oleksandr Bryhinets, however, thinks the idea is ridiculous. “Ukrainskiy Dim is one of the few buildings in Kyiv which was built as a museum. To turn it into a fashionable restaurant is a crime." We’re behind you Oleksandr, way to stand up for your beliefs!

3.5 Billion Hryvnia for Government Spending Approved

For a supposedly cash-strapped government, a couple of recent budgetary approvals caught our attention and made us go hmmmm. Firstly, they want to pump over 2.5 billion hryvnia into the national space programme. That’s right, the national space programme. Now, Ukraine may well have been at the centre of space exploration for the Soviet Union, and did a wonderful job, but who on earth these days is investing such money into space? And why? Bearing in mind it’s a lot of money for an impoverished nation, but not really very much for a proper space programme (to compare, on average a space shuttle mission costs around $450 million, and that’s after development costs). The government has also announced its giving 1 billion hryvnia to the Kyiv City Administration to make improvements to the city for EURO 2012, and to help improve health care, water supply and social security. That’s all very nice, but again we have to ask the question: where’s the money coming from. After some brief thought on the subject, we realised that this perhaps wasn’t the right question to ask, as we know the country would probably be doing alright financially if it wasn’t for the politicians stealing everything. So, better to ask in whose pocket will the majority of the above-mentioned money end up?

Prominent Ukrainian painter, Tetyana Yablonska, is born. In addition to her artistic work, Yablonska leads a very socially-active lifestyle as a member of the USSR parliament and later a member of the Ukrainian Artist’s Union and the Academy of Art of the USSR.

And the Drum Roll Please…

Every year, the national casting for Eurovision makes us both laugh and cry at the same time. It is such a messy affair that rumours often continue to come out of the woodwork even months after the whole competition has wrapped up. This year, with 21 possible competitors, it seemed evident from the very beginning who would be taking the trip to Baku to represent Ukraine at Eurovision 2012. Were you keeping track of the antics? Can you guess who it might be? The answer is the illustrious Gaitana. Other contestants blame her team for cheating and all say they knew she would come out on top; and not necessarily because she deserved to. Max Barskih, an extraordinary star with a rough-and-tumble appearance, said he spent $300,000 on sound, sets and costuming, which got him little more than second place. His producer Alan Badoev compared the elections to a kolkhoz, a form of Soviet collective farming, that didn’t deserve the incredible show Barshih prepared. In the meantime, this year’s Eurovision hopeful couldn’t stop thanking God for her victory. “It’s a real miracle! In spite of a sore throat, I did it! Yesterday I couldn’t even talk, but now I am ready for a whole concert!” Gaitana says she is going to start preparing for the contest straight away and promises that Eurovision 2013 will be held in Kyiv. Should the world come to its end in 2012, however, she won’t have to worry about it too much.

Ukrainian Subjects Reduced

Ukrainian kids these days don’t know a whole lot about their country’s history, a sad reality that often goes hand in hand with the local language. Characteristically, our Party of Regions Education Minister Dmytro Tabachnyk believes the answer is in just doing away with the whole troublesome issue. “We need additional school hours for informatics and foreign languages, but adding 9-10 lessons is too much. What will happen is that we’ll probably reduce the subjects altogether.” Suggesting the history of Ukraine be superimposed with world history, for example, should come as little shock to anyone familiar with the Russian-leaning politician. Just as the fight over the national language, and now the reduction of its study in schools, is never-ending. What it is, is unfortunate.

To Leave or Not to Leave

Once again, Vitaliy Klitschko has proved his status as a formidable boxer. And once again he has announced his desire to leave boxing for good, so his Twitter account says. But this in itself is interesting, especially since he wrote on Monday 20 February via Facebook that he doesn’t even have a Twitter account. Whether the heavyweight champion does in fact hang up his gloves for good or not is yet to be seen. His brother on the other hand has pretty good reason to head back into the ring. The face-wash he got from Chisora is nothing if not a call to battle.

Ivan Fedorov establishes the first printing house in Lviv. He is one of the three fathers of printing in Ukraine. A year later, Fedorov publishes the second edition of Apostolos and an Azbuka. Commemorating his contribution, a monument of Fedorov is erected in Lviv in 1979.

FEMEN Face Imprisonment!

We here at What’s On have always enjoyed the wonderfully ironic antics of the Ukrainian feminist movement FEMEN, and it would appear local law enforcement has viewed them in much the same manner. But now it looks as though they’ve gone one step too far, and one member may face up to four years imprisonment. Apparently enraged by the Indian Foreign Ministry`s reported instructions to carry out detailed checks on all Ukrainian women aged 15 to 40 seeking Indian travel visas, in a move to combat growing prostitution in the country, the ladies carried out one of their all-toofamiliar protests at the Indian Ambassador’s residence in Kyiv. Unafraid of the sub-zero temperatures, they stripped to the waist on 18 January and, carrying placards with slogans that read “Ukraine is not a brothel” and “I am not a prostitute”, climbed onto the balcony of the Indian Ambassador’s residence, tore down the Indian flag, beat it against windows and doors and threw it on the ground. Freedom of speech is, to a greater or lesser extent, allowed in this country. Hooliganism and desecration of a foreign state symbol is not. You may have gone too far this time ladies.

Turning Our Green Spaces Blue Kyiv once had the market on green European cities. Unfortunately, urbanisation has taken the place of many former parks and recreational zones. One of the few areas left still lush and lovely that hasn’t been totally taken over by the biting teeth of development is located smack-bang in the middle of the Dnipro. More or less protected for the time being, the Kyiv Islands are archipelagos of wild nature. With business developers chomping at the bit to get in with their bulldozers, however, their future is of increasing concern.

ocated in between the right and left banks of the Dnipro are Hydropark and Trukhaniv Island. Chaotically and unsystematically organised, they are occupied by venues of sport and leisure, which come at a cost to the islands and as well as its inhabitants. With plans in the works for even more development, the average metropolitan citizen may no longer be able to enjoy the river without being inundated by noise pollution, litter and funfair fumes. To ensure that any and all development is in the interest of the environment and the city’s citizens, an international competition dedicated to the urban planning and preservation of the Kyiv Islands was implemented last fall. Recently presented to the Kyiv Administration, What’s On takes a closer look at the problem and talks to the Kyiv Islands project administrator as well as its winner.

Pearls of the Dnipro

The competition, Pearls of the Dnipro, was announced last September. Its goal was to uncover ideas for the future development of the Kyiv Islands while preserving various parts in the process. Initiated by Kyiv architect

Serhiy Tselovalnyk, entries from participants all over the world were accepted. The competition itself included the 37 different islands, such as Velyky, Muromets, Trukhaniv, Dolobetsky, Venetsiansky, Zhukiv, Kozachy and Olgyn. Housing numerous unique plants, animals and birds, as registered in the Red Book of Endangered Species, Zhukiv Island is perhaps the biggest and most significant of them all. The area is supposed to be protected. And yet the Kyiv Administration has been known to issue permits to a number of organisations, including pseudoecological groups, to use the land. Despite its long and sordid history of scandalous and at times illegal seizure, the island still operates as a self-sufficient eco-system, and building anything on or around the area is, by law, prohibited. Expanses such as Trukhaniv Island and Hydropark are already too far gone. Dotted with ugly and often haphazard sport and leisure sites, competition organiser Serhiy Tselovalnyk recognised Kyiv’s need for a modern, systematic project, which would not only preserve the reservation but allow citizens a place to jog, sunbathe, swim and relax. Despite the current ‘protected’ status of the area, Tselovalnyk says he has received various propositions from big-time investors wanting to tear up the lush green forests and river shores. “The last straw was an expensive brochure featuring the Dnipro Islands with a 6,000 capacity movie theatre, river-side hotels, parking lots and more. I said to myself right there and then that I wasn’t going to accept such proposals anymore. Instead, I opted to initiate this competition to generate ideas on how we could preserve the island eco-system and develop it for Kyiv inhabitants.”

International Interest

Receiving 48 projects from 23 different countries, participants were from all over, including Ukraine, Russia, Romania, India, Columbia, Finland, Great Britain and the US. Forty-five projects were deemed acceptable according to the rules, and the jury, by way of online voting, narrowed the final options down to eight. Made up of well-respected and famous urban architects, the international panel of judges consisted of Lorenz Dexler from Germany, Willem Jan Neutelings and Theo Hauben from the Netherlands, François de Marignac from Switzerland, along with a number of Ukrainian architects and authorities. Tselovalnyk recalls the process: “Before discussing anything, we all stuck yellow post-its on the project we each liked the best. What’s interesting, is that one project ended up with seven out of a total eight pieces of paper. Mine was the exception! It was beautiful and sexy in its representation – imagine, if you can, icebergs and other fantastic things floating along the Dnipro! Unfortunately, it would have been near impossible to complete.” Guaranteeing transparency and equality, the projects were coded with randomly-chosen numbers so that the jury was unaware of who was behind which project. After arguments both for and against each project were voiced, first place with a sum of $20,000 was presented to Wolf House Production, a group from Romania, and their project, The Blue Line. The team included two urban planners – Iulian Canov and Cristina Zlota, three architects – Vlad Stoica, Rozina Dragomir and Alexandru Tudose, and the project head – Gabriel Pascariu, PhD in urban architecture, experienced urban planner and professor at The Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest. The idea? Unite the whole island system with a water tram. Rozina Dragomir, one of the project architects, was the one who came to Kyiv to promote The Blue Line. “A few of us had a little time at the end of last year and were looking for a competition in which to take part. Hide and Seek

Most everyone is in constant pursuit of something, whether it’s a new apartment, a new job, or a new dream. For some, that quest is a little more serious, bordering on life and death. In search of a place that will offer protection from repression, refugees from all over the world leave their dangerous homelands to come knocking on Ukraine’s door. They are seeking seclusion, they are seeking safety. But will they find it here?

“I

hope I won’t be killed. I hope nobody is chasing me. I hope we’ll never be forced to leave our home.” This is the poster that catches my eye as soon as I enter the Rokoda Integration Centre, a charitable foundation for refugees in Ukraine. Founded 14 years ago, the centre’s main goal is providing refugees with educational and cultural support. “Just imagine the culture shock these people must experience. They understand neither the language nor the traditions of Ukraine. What we try and do is give them a basic knowledge of the place in which they now live,” says Chairman of the Board, Natalia Gourjii. Typically mistaken for illegal immigrants who have come to make their fortunes, the truth is most are running from persecution and are desperate for freedom and, more than anything, peace. Meeting with the local Ukrainian population, who are often extremely xenophobic, runaways find warmth and compassion at Rokada. Unfortunately, it may soon share the fate of those it currently protects. Looking at a possible forced

closedown, “What will people do without us?” asks Natalia. “The fate of refugees there now and those who will need our help in the future must be fought for.”

The Exile

The majority of refugees in Ukraine come from Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Uzbekistan, Georgia and Vietnam. Trying to escape the social and political circumstances found in their home countries, most come to Kyiv in search of a better life. United in the Rokada Integration Centre, there are many activities for refugees to engage in: theatre, painting, IT and much more. Because of the complicated financial situation, the centre can’t really afford paid help. They do, however, have a cavalcade of eager volunteers. One such volunteer is Boryan Ristovski, who strongly believes it is never too late to learn. In one of his English classes, he’s got a 63-year old man who studies alongside a number of young people. “It’s important to understand their environment, to give them a hand when they need

it and to try and appreciate how this new situation must feel.” IT teacher, Radion Denysenko, confirms this notion and says that working with refugees has benefits on both sides. “I am a witness to their life. Their traditions, costumes, food and holiday celebrations teach and excite me as well!” There is another poster in the centre advertising education. It says, “You will learn Ukrainian and receive a certificate of higher education as recognised by the Ministry of Education.” Enthusiastic by the possibility of secondary education, I pass an Afghan girl in the hall who greets me in Ukrainian. She is among many who would like to take the Ministry up on its promise. The problem is it is very expensive. The willingness of refugees to study puts the centre’s directors in the hot seat. The Convention on the Rights of the Child doesn’t apply to Ukraine, and so kids go to school, they help their parents at the market after class and hope for a brighter future. They all want to lead a normal life here in Ukraine, with a good education that does not discriminate them as exiles. But the future is unclear.

Dreaming of the Sun

Regardless, the kids at the Rokada centre all seem happy and carefree. Watching a group of children painting, I realise they have all chosen the same scene: shining sun, green grass, and blossoming flowers. They don’t seem to mind or even care that the snow is falling outside, saying, “We still have the summer!” All but one chatter away, telling me about this, that and the other. I approach this shy, quiet little girl and ask her what she dreams about. “I want to work at the bazaar like my mom. Or, maybe make women look beautiful in a salon.” I smile to myself. Her aspirations do not include a sack full of presents from Santa or someday becoming a beautiful princess. The dreams of this 5-year old are pure and simple. Yukie Mokuo, the UNICEF representative in Ukraine, believes that the happiness of these children depends on little more than the love and consideration they receive from others. “Every child has the same rights. These children deserve to be treated well without pressure from society.” In the meantime, Natalia Gourjii isn’t sure whether they will be strong enough to “cut into their life path”. Ukrainian society isn’t ready to accept them. A sentiment that seems evident enough in a picture being painted by one of the smallest children in the group. There is no bright sun or green grass. Instead, the page is swathed in dark colours, making it a sort of abstract. I urge him to include a little colour. He complies, but his picture sill looks dangerously dark. The poster when I walked in – “I hope I won’t be killed. I hope nobody is chasing me” – pokes at me, and for my part I hope these little painters will never have to deal with the fear of injustice or inequality.

Coordinated by the Military Brotherhood International Charity Organisation, the exhibition focuses on the problems of children who live in countries at war. Those who attended the evening did not go home unaffected by the horrendous conditions many of the photographs were able to capture. It is a very touching display indeed. Take Me Out!

The Sweetness of Lemons As nice as it is to make new friends, it’s always lovely to pop in on an old one. With this in mind, we headed to evergreen favourite Limoncello to see whether this fixture on the Kyiv restaurant scene was still as fresh as ever.

my banquette seating, through the cosy warmth of Limoncello. It’s busy in both senses of the word, people and decor. I’m not much for the phrase ‘people-watching’ I must say. It always sounds a bit like you’re the saddo sitting at a party drinking hot chocolate watching others have fun, yet still feeling a bit superior. In truth, I even have a slight issue with those who don’t drink at all, recover-

ing alcoholics the exception. They are like fun-thieves, stealing the good times those of us who enjoy a drink create. Anyway, right off the bat I decide to order up an alcoholic beverage to assist my taking-in of the clientele and interior. I duly plump for a Captain Morgan Mojito. It arrives swiftly and is sweetly sublime. I must say, however, it does feel like the good Captain may have somewhat jumped ship; in terms of alcohol it feels a little underpowered. No matter, I sip away and gaze around. Over in the corner is a brick-style enclave where the chefs do their work. These are becoming very popular nowadays; it’s been a long time since those kitchen kings were allowed to work away in the privacy of back rooms. The walls are adorned with artistic and rather erotic photos of various body parts and lemons. There are fish tanks and, my favourite, a lady DJ working her magic up on the decks. It must be a little demoralising for a DJ when no one is up dancing to your music, in a restaurant setting the most you are going to get is probably a bit of cutlery tapping. Nonetheless, she soldiers on and adds a nice touch to what is already both a warm and cool atmosphere. The crowd is to match. It’s not like certain establishments in Kyiv, which look like they are under siege from Range Rovers and Porsche Cayennes (you know, those Volkswagens pretending to be some kind of 911 jeep), but there’s no doubt the crowd here are well-heeled. The prices reflect this, not Range Rover prices but a long way from Daewoo Lanos rates also. However, there is value to be found, I enjoyed a mushroom cream soup while waiting for Maria. At 47hrv, it’s not cheap

wonder how many minutes are spent in restaurants all over the world each day by men waiting for female dining companions. I wonder how many of them read a book in that time, how many search for wifi and check for Facebook updates, how many perhaps even write Twitter updates describing their wait. My companion for this evening’s engagement is my friend, the lovely Maria Andryushina, and yes, the lady duly keeps the gentleman waiting for a little.

Actually though, on this occasion in my capacity as a reviewer, the waiting time is rather useful. I cast my eyes around the room from the comfort of

peat play. They did take up quite a bit of space though – actually a feature of 90s parties was often entire walls of CDs – and they didn’t stay shiny for long. They got cracked, worn, and with that reluctance to play them grew. Despite the quality of the music, there was something a bit defeatist about taking out a dusty old CD to put on. So you were always forking out for new works, every week your wallpaper becoming more of a stranger to you as piles grew. And then there were the albums, I always remember a feeling of slight disappointment with albums – some good tracks but always a few duff ones. Nowadays, we pick and choose which tracks we listen to, we find tracks at the click of a button and play them with another. Good music is still good music, however you get it. That hasn’t changed. What has changed is that, most likely, neither you nor I pay for what we listen to. The famous Ukrainian songstress told me that these days, people love your music, write lots of nice comments on YouTube. They don’t want to give you any money for it though. And, I must admit, I’m listening to her now yet without a financial transaction having taken place for me to do so, nor will it. But, truthfully, isn’t that just modern times – we love things more than we ever did, we just don’t want to pay for them!

art of my job here at What’s On involves interviewing musicians, in a world where people listen to music more than ever before. If you work at a desk you probably spend a good portion of the day with your headphones on. We listen on vkontakte, we listen on ex.ua and we listen to downloads. I actually think the quality of music among Ukrainian bands is very good, in fact even as I write this I’m listening to a famous songstress who will be appearing in the pages of What’s On soon. When we met the other day, she was telling me that it’s more difficult being a pop star these days. It got me thinking, I’m a bit into my 30s now, so old enough to remember the ‘golden age’ of music. That is, you’d hear a band’s single on the radio, wait for the big day of its release and cycle to Woolworths hoping it was a £1.99 not a £3.99. You took it home carefully, took it out of its main sleeve, then out of its inner sleeve, lifted the lid of your record player, slid the record in, dropped the needle down and closed the lid. So, as well as paying for your music, you had to do a fair amount of work to hear it. Then, CDs came along. They looked nicer, were shinier and took less time to play – you could even work it with a remote control. I sat many a time in the 90s reading What Car magazine with Divine Madness on re-
