What’s Up Putin Suffering from Too Much Gas!

Yes, the gas wars continue between Russia and Ukraine, and this week the latter rejected a proposed 10% discount offered by the former. Ukraine, which is currently paying $416 per thousand cubic metres, reckons $250 to be a fair price, and therefore 10% off doesn’t hack it. Putin has been refusing to give a fair price to Ukraine as he’s trying to leverage ownership of Ukraine’s gas pipeline away from the country on whose territory it resides into his own pocket, or have Ukraine enter his customs union. Rightly (it has to happen at least once in a while), Yanukovych and Azarov are resisting such moves (despite the fact they signed the agreement in the first place). In response, Putin threw his toys out of the pram, saying he and his flatulence are going to bypass Ukraine altogether. So the gas wars continue with no end in sight, which doesn’t bode well for Europe if another cold snap occurs.

Lutsenko Found Guilty

The Kyiv Pechersk District Court has found former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko guilty of embezzlement. Convicted of giving illegal bonuses to his driver at the expense of the state and overspending government funds (which, the majority of politicians do as well, the difference being they spend it on themselves) for Police Day celebrations in 2008 and 2009, the prosecution requested a sentence of four years in prison. Major ally to jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko, Lutsenko has, of course, denied any wrongdoing, and insists the trial is politically motivated. He may not be far off, as Yanukovych has been trying to crackdown on his political opponents. While there is little hope for the newly-convicted Lutsenko, the president did go on national television last week where he was quoted as saying that he wanted to find the right solution where Tymoshenko was concerned, and suggested that he may review the case according to “European standards”. Whether that means changing the country’s criminal code, we’re not sure. What we do know is that if you continue to throw people in jail because you don’t like them saying mean things about you, you’re going to run out of space.

Baby-selling Big Business

Do you ever come across stories that make you go WTF? We do all the time. In fact, we came across a real humdinger this week that has got us all asking what the heck were they thinking? Check this out. Turns out Theresa Erickson, a California lawyer, has been sending American women, signed up as surrogates, to Ukraine to impregnate them with anonymous embryo donors. Once pregnant, Erickson and her little ring of helpers would then look for prospective parents back in the States for the babies, telling them “the foetuses were a result of legal surrogacy arrangements in which the original parents backed out”. One of the surrogates, Heather Albaugh, helped blow the whistle on the whole scam. Having returned home from Ukraine, she was told there were still no adoptive parents for the baby, even though she was already in her 18th week. Contacting other lawyers, she learned Erickson was under FBI investigation, and immediately signed up to help. Erickson has since been sentenced to five months in prison, nine months of home confinement and $70,000 in fines. It seems a small price to pay, however, considering each baby was sold for a minimum $100,000. Not to mention the emotional tragedy inflicted on everyone involved. Using her fame as a leading reproductive law specialist, writing books and appearing on television talking about fertility issues, Erickson won the trust of both surrogates and parents. She “attempted to create the most marketable baby available, which was blond hair, blue-eyed”, said the surrogacy attorney, Andrew Vorzimer. Does anyone else think 5 months is too short?

See the Incredible Two-Headed Tortoise

An unnamed Ukrainian man has been raising a two-headed tortoise in secret, it would appear. Until now, that is, as the man has handed the incredible specimen over to the National Science Museum in Kyiv, where it is now on public display. Strictly speaking, it’s not actually a two-headed tortoise, but conjoined twins, with each head having its own personality. “The left one is more dominant,” explains Yuri Yuravliov, a local zoologist. “It is also more active, and prefers eating green food, while the other prefers more brightly coloured food – dandelions and carrots.” The conjoined female has two heads, two hearts, four front legs but only two hind ones, and one intestine. It also has a heart-shaped shell to accommodate the two heads. It certainly sounds like it’s worth seeing, if just to see which one wins out when foraging for food!

This Week in History The World and the Former PM

It seems Tymoshenko has fans all over the world as even Korean students have taken up the fight against the jailing of the former Prime Minster. Last weekend, students from Hanil High School in South Chungcheong Province rallied in front of the Ukrainian Embassy in Yongsan, Seoul. Hoping to raise public awareness, protestors threw roses over the fence, one even went so far as to say, “Korea and Ukraine both have in common a past of being under the rule of dictatorships. We fully sympathise with Tymoshenko, a democratic leader of her country.” Yes, Ukraine does often seem like a dictatorship, and yes the former PM has been jailed for all the wrong reasons this time round. But democratic? Tymoshenko? Can those two items really go side-by-side?

Kyrylo Rozumovsky is elected Hetman of the Left Bank of Ukraine. Four years later, the council includes the Right Bank as well. As the last Ukrainian Hetman, Rozymovsky re-establishes Baturyn as the Hetmanate capital, reforms the Cossack military and better develops the principles of science and culture

SBU Foils Putin Assassination Plot!

Why? Might be the first question that springs to mind, and it might be a valid one considering the gas wars currently taking place. But nonetheless, the SBU announced on Monday they’d arrested two men in Odesa recently who were apparently plotting to assassinate Putin. Russian pro-government Channel One television made the announcement, stating the two men were part of a group seeking an independent Islamist state in Russia’s North Caucuses. This was quickly followed by a statement from the SBU. “I can officially confirm they were preparing an assassination attempt on Putin,” said Marina Ostapenko, a spokeswoman. Apparently the SBU had been tracking down these two gents for months, and, of course, it’s pure coincidence that they just happened to catch them and go public with it a week before the Russian presidential elections. Putin will protect you from such people!

Good News A Prize for Peace

Continuing with the political absurdity this week, according to The Star, announced earlier this week, Yulia Tymoshenko has been nominated for the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize. She is up against tough competition, however, as two hundred and thirty-one nominations have been submitted in total, including Bradley Manning, the US Private charged with the biggest leak of classified information in US history, and Russian human rights activist Svetlana Gannushkina. We have to wonder whether she’d even be considered for that list had she been convicted of things she’d actually done wrong, of which there are many. But then, that’s Ukrainian politics for you.

07.indb 5

Most of the news this week seems to be of a negative sort. Kinda brings you down doesn’t it? But be melancholic and miserable no longer, because we have learned there is much to celebrate! The Financial Times fDi Intelligence Unit has recently released its Annual European Cities and Regions of the Future 2012/2013 report, in which Ukraine has done remarkably well. Ternopil has ranked best European city for cost effectiveness, while Ukrainian cities lead the pack in three of four other available cost-effective categories. Kharkiv takes the number one spot in Top 10 Major Cities, with Dnipropetrovsk coming in a close second. Top 10 Small Cities has Mykolaiv at the forefront, while Ternopil, Berdyansk, Truskavets and Pereyaslav-Khmelnytsky take the cake for most cost-effective Micro Cities. Even though Ukraine cannot claim the number one spot in the Top 10 Large Cities, Odesa, Kyiv and Lviv all feature prominently. It’s a pretty impressive report considering 253 European cities were considered.

4 March 1815

Ukrainian composer Mykhailo Verbytsky is born. Composing symphonies, choral works and folk song arrangements, his compositions total 133 altogether. But he is best known for Sche Ne Vmerla Ukrainy, what becomes the national anthem of Ukraine in 1917.

5 March 1827

Ukrainian poet, writer and civic figure Leonid Hlibov is born. In 1861, Hlibov institutes and becomes editor of the weekly newspaper Chernihivskiy Lystok, where he publishes his own satirical works. Writing 107 fables, 40 romantic lyrical poems and a collection of riddles for kids, Hlibov is one of the most prominent writers of Ukraine.

3 March 1866

The National Parliamentary Library of Ukraine opens. The main building, located on Hrushevskoho 1, allows for easy access to 4 million items in its collection. Both modern literature and early prints can be found in this, one of the largest libraries of the country.

8 March 1966

International Women’s Day becomes an official holiday in the USSR and loses its political background. Initially a day to fight for women’s rights, it does little to change the position of women around the world. What it does is give them a day off from the mundane.

Getting a call to work with Enigma in 1998, he’s been with them ever since. While he has continued to work on his own albums (the sixth and most recent called Trouble In Paradise released just last year), leading Enigma to record sales into the tens of millions has been his true claim to fame. 4 March at 12.00

This story about a little onion-headed boy is a classic. Written by Gianni Rodari, there is probably no better fairytale about the importance of friendship and loyalty. Helping out his vegetable allies, this Cipollino was first performed in Kyiv on the stages of the Opera Theatre back in 1974. Teaching kids about honesty and generosity, tag along to the Operetta to see what a more modern version looks like. Tickets are 30 – 50hrv. For more information call 287-2630.

Kyiv Life Danish Theatre

KYIV CINEMA Danish Triumf, the annual Danish Film Festival, did not focus on the recent cinematic novelties that are the new releases of this year. Instead, they reintroduced a number of movies thought to be highlights in Danish filmmaking. And so, on 22 February, opening night was given over to Valhalla Rising, a philosophic drama directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, highly praised by Ukrainian audiences. While the films are always available on DVD, those who missed the festival will have to wait for next year!

KYIV CITY COUNCIL The Kuwait Embassy had two reasons to celebrate on 24 February. The first was their 51st Day of Independence, while the second was their 21st anniversary of Liberation Day. Considering these two major occasions, the Embassy rented the great Column Hall of Kyiv City Council to house what must have been close to everyone in the city! Guests of the reception listened to enthusiastic words from Ambassador HE Yousef Al Gabandi, and exchanged warm congratulations with all those from the Embassy.

MARIINSKIY PALACE On 21 February DWK organised a very interesting reception. Inviting Iryna Berezhnaya and Svyatoslav Oleynik to debate the situation in the country, the two were given the task of defending the views inherent in Blue vs Orange. Discussing various issues, including how to make Ukraine investment-friendly and what kind of international goals we should be aiming for, the result was inconclusive. The real winners, however, were those in the audience. Having listened to the arguments, they made their own conclusions.

UKRAINA CINEMA “A very kind movie” – that’s what people who came out to the first viewing of Russian comedy, Mamas, were saying after the show. On 24 February, Ukrainian celebrities headed to the cinema in flocks to take in the touching film portraying kids working hard, earning a living while trying to stay in touch with their parents. Wonder how many of them called their moms after the movie? Probably everyone.

Northern Dogs Race to Ukraine

CHAIKA AIRFIELD The first ever Ukraine Championship for Northern Dog Breeds was held on 25 February. Organised by the Kennel Alliance of Ukraine, the event united amateurs and professional dog-fanciers, who had their beloved pets out for the day. Alaskan Malamutes, Laikas, Siberian Huskis, Samoed Laikas, as well as rare breed like Yakut Laika didn’t take the contest too seriously and spent most of the time running around and playing in the snow.

Graham Phillips

whether to trust it. Never absolutely sure if it’s real. Me and my aftershaves exist in a state of kind of mutual admiration and yet suspicion. It’s a bit like the 90s film Basic Instinct. As for Yulia’s iPod request, that is an interesting one. This is a country with a GDP and an average income many times lower than in the UK. Yet the fact is that many consumer products are still much cheaper to buy in the UK. On my list are always Gillette razor blades – they cost around twice here what they do in the UK, which is typically £3-4, or 40hrv, per blade. Coffee also. It’s not quite three times the price, but it’s close enough. It all adds up to the potential contents of my suitcase being somewhat difficult to explain if opened. The razors, fair enough, I’m a man who likes an all over shave (including chest). But then, such a man is surely at odds with the kind of ‘real man’ who consumes huge quantities of meaty products. But he in turn is surely a little out of sorts with the kind of guy who’d be wearing the kind of delicate scent requested by Ira. And that guy would, in turn, be unlikely to consume the kind of cheap coffee I’m partial to. So really it all comes down to Yulia’s iPod, and what I clearly need to do is find a musical artist popular with a meat-eating, body-shaving, scent-wearing budget coffee-drinker. Sounds like a job for Chris De Burgh.

Every week we round up the Tweets of the Week to see what Tweeters are talking about in reference to our home city. This week, the sun has been coming out, inspiring us with a taste of spring. John O’Brien, Ph.D. ‫@ ‏‬Thinkiatry @Akmaldinova Hope the sun is shining in Kiev this evening – enjoy your Sunday! Letter Dear Graham, I came over to Kyiv a little while back, for a weekend. Then, I saw the girls here and decided to come back to live. So, I applied for a job as an English teacher at a school. They promised me a nice flat, part-time hours and a decent paycheck. The flat I’m in would have to be decorated to be just about unfit-to-live-in, my part-time hours are full-time hours and my paycheck means I earn about as much as a babushka selling Chornobyl mushrooms. And if I leave, they’ve threatened to send Interpol after me. Please don’t give my name, which is definitely not Simon, and the language school, which is definitely not named after the capital of England. (name withheld) Dear Simon is it? Let me guess, you’re a bit puzzled at your lack of success with the ladies. You work until the late hours then go out for beers with your colleagues from the US, England, Australia, in expat bars. You sit, drink and try vainly to flirt with the waitresses. You have had a bit of luck with girls here, that is you’ve been out for coffees with a couple of students, but you have the feeling they’re just using you for language practice. And also, you heard Ukraine was really cheap, but the cafés they want to go to actually cost more than Western ones. Welcome to life as an imported language school teacher in Ukraine! With deepest sympathies, Graham

am popping back to London soon, having first sent an email round the office seeing if anyone would like anything brought back. Their answers, I feel, tell a lot about both our office and society in general. First up was our publisher Neil, who wanted sausages. He then, like a lead member of the chorus in Oliver’s ‘Food Glorious Food’, realised sausages were just the beginning of the meaty possibilities so a request for bacon was swiftly added. This was topped up with a black pudding requisition. By this time, Managing Director Paul had become involved with his own request for a pound of flesh. Or rather, if Neil was having a pound of flesh, Paul wanted a pound and a few ounces. Editor Lana kept a dignified silence but word was out, it was a London free-for-all. Yulia weighed in with an iPod, Ira from Panorama with an aftershave from duty free. The latter was a bit of a mystery to me – why would anyone not purchase their scents from Lybidska Metro as I do? The sausages, bacon etc, well, that’s more understandable as such delicacies are unavailable here. At least I think so, not really being a meat-eater. I’ve definitely seen sausages. But I guess there are sausages and then there are sausages. Just as maybe there is aftershave from duty free and metro station aftershave. I have an interesting relationship with the latter, I’m never quite sure

You often hear London described as one of the most expensive cities in the world. Yet, back there in the week, I noticed just how many things are cheaper than here in Ukraine! Electrical products, many food products, clothes....

London

Literally hot. While we begin to enjoy only freezing temperatures, London has enjoyed its hottest February in decades with temperatures over 20 degrees on some days. Still think London is grey and rainy? Just freeze off will you!

Returning Flatmates

My flatmate JD had been away on a tour across Europe this past week and a half. And, I’ll admit, I missed the guy. He’s back, having been to Krakow and Prague, with lots of stories and tales from the road. And no, we’re not a gay couple.

Euro 2012 Countdown Board

Due to a technical failure, the board went black for a while in the last week. Surely no cause for concern. It’s not like Euro 2012 is going to need much electricity...

Preparation

I recently travelled back from Boryspil Airport, only to witness how much construction is still going on, with only 100 days left until Euro 2012. Anyone think it’s going to be finished on time? Me neither.
