What’s Up Tymoshenko Attorney Expelled From Parliament Wow. That’s all we can say about the State’s recent decision to strip Batkivschyna MP Serhiy Vlasenko of his seat in parliament. For those who don’t know, or haven’t been paying attention, Mr Vlasenko is the lead defence attorney to Yulia Tymoshenko – Ukraine’s gas princess who has been languishing between hospital bed and jail for nearly a year and a half. To be fair, it was one of the country’s administrative courts which stripped Vlasenko of his seat. By the sounds of it, however, it was a decision made at the insistence of Volodymyr Rybak, Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament and member of the ruling Party of Regions. According to Rybak, Vlasenko was “improperly combining work as a legislator and a lawyer”. In response, Vlasenko said he was representing Tymoshenko free of charge and had no other legal clients, which, as to be expected, fell on deaf ears. What makes this latest act of retribution more than just a little perturbing is that without his parliamentary seat, Tymoshenko’s lawyer (and former MOP) is no longer immune from prosecution. It has led many to believe, including this publication, that Vlasenko is now nothing but a sitting duck, and will soon be jailed just like his client, preventing any further work on the case. And the EU is going to be mightily perturbed by this latest attack on opposition parliamentarians. It’s only been a week or so since the EU handed Yanukovych an ultimatum: do something about the opposition politicians behind bars by May, or forget the association agreement. Stefan Fuele, EU enlargement commissioner, has already expressed his displeasure on Twitter: “Stripping a parliamentarian of his mandate like in the case of Valsenko is not the European way. Does this bring Ukraine closer to the EU?” Of course not! And we have to assume the government knows this.

Head Freedomfighter To Take Up New Post? We here at What’s On have just caught wind of a story that could see Oleh Tyahnybok, leader of the ultra far-right Svoboda party, run for the position of head honcho of Kyiv. That’s right folks, should Vitality Klitschko decide that he doesn’t want to take on the position, residents of the Ukrainian capital could well have the king of nationalism run for the position. The statement was made by Tyahnybok himself on Sunday 10 March in an interview with Radio Svoboda: “Of course, Svoboda can nominate its own candidates,” he is quoted as saying. “Ilyenko, for instance. And I can go if there is such a political need. But surely if Klitschko says ‘I’m going’ then Svoboda and Batkivschyna will work toward his candidacy.” With the elections currently scheduled for 2 June 2013, let’s hope Klitschko takes one for the team and gets on that mayoral campaign trail now – the city has already had to deal with one loony as its representative in previous years, it certainly doesn’t need another.

Shevchenko Commemorated March 2014 will mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of poet and artist Taras Shevchenko, and, as expected, the country will mark the occasion with celebrations across the country, according to Minister of Culture, Leonid Novohatko. “I really want to see the 200th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko to become a unifying factor in the political, social, spiritual and artistic life of our society,” he is quoted as saying. So make sure you’re in town – Ukrainians know how to throw a good party!

Armed Combat Dolphins Escape! Ever seen that movie where they train dolphins to attach limpet mines to ships? Well, according to a report online, that very thing is happening in Crimea, and three of the dolphins escaped during training with armed weapons attached to their heads. According to the report, a document was leaked anonymously from the Research Centre of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oceanarium which stated that three of these cute but now deadly creatures had done a runner during an exercise in the open sea. Smart as these animals are, they managed to evade recapture despite an extensive search, and now those in charge are asking the commander of the fleet to carry out a sonar search. So the message this year, while on your trip to Yalta, is don’t go in the water – not because there may be a great white lurking beneath the waves, but a dolphin – armed and dangerous.

Ukrainian Book is Among 250 of the World’s Best for Children and Young Adults Young and in love, Ivas is the main character in Eight Days from the Life of Burunduk, a witty and empathetic tale of first love, disappointment and the lengths a young boy will go to in order to have his affection returned. Shortlisting it onto the world’s 250 best children’s books this year, writer Ivan Andrusyak had to compete with thousands of entries from more than 40 countries to appear on White Ravens 2013 catalogue of best books, a respected collection of “especially noteworthy books” as decided by the International Youth Library and updated annually. The entire collection of books will be presented at the 2013 Bologna Children’s Book Fair on 25 – 28 March. Mr Andrusyak is not the first Ukrainian writer whose works have made this prestigious list: in 2011, Vasyl Holoborodko’s poetic book (A Glove Ful of Poems) was also acknowledged.

Not one word, obviously, but an expression, which is essential while using one of Kyiv’s various methods of public transport – the marshrutka. Literally translated as “pass, please”, it asks the person in front of you to pass along the fare from passengers sitting on the back. So, the next time you find yourself aboard one of these little yellow buses, rather than forcing your way through a horde of people just to hand over your 2.50hrv, tap the person in front of you and say, “peredayte, bud laska”. The money will (almost) always make to the front, with your change returning in the same way.

This Week in History 20 March 1639 Ivan Mazepa is born. He becomes Hetman of Ukraine at the age of 50 and tirelessly works for Ukraine’s independence from the Russian Empire. He is remembered in world history for his support of Swedish King Charles XII and his Russian invasion, and here in Ukraine for his spirit of generosity, especially in the spheres of education, culture and printed media.

17 March 1856 Well-known Russian artist Mykhaylo Vrubel is born. His name is synonymous with Kyiv too, however, with many works featured in Volodymyrskiy cathedral and Kyrylivska church. It was he who also restored many of the murals in St Sophia cathedral.

19 March 1917 A mass demonstration of 100,000 people takes place in Kyiv. This particular “revolution” does not gain the independence it had initially set out for. It does, however, become the biggest gathering of Ukrainians in the country’s history, until the Orange Revolution of 2004.

19 March 1930 Lina Kostenko – the well-known Ukrainian poetess, is born. Fighting first the Soviet totalitarian regime and later the post-Soviet syndrome that pervades independent Ukraine, she remains one of the country’s symbols of non-conformism even today.

Mystery British Man Rescued by Ukrainian Armed Forces Imagine, making your way to Ukraine with a small to do list: visit Chornobyl, toss back a little vodka followed by some salo, maybe meet a girl. When suddenly, you’re taken and held against your will by supposed kidnappers and made to call your family who are required to provide a ransom for your release. All of a sudden, Ukraine doesn’t seem like such a nice place to visit after all, making you wish you’d gone to the Med instead. It was just this scenario, or one not far off, that a British man experienced last week. Checking into a hotel in Dnipropetrovsk on Sunday 3 March, he was apparently seized by three men. His relatives learned of the situation just two days later when they received a call from the unidentified abducted man. Thanks to a bit of quick-thinking at their end, the man’s frightened family got in touch with the British embassy in Kyiv, who then contacted the Ukrainian authorities. It was they who dispatched members of Ukraine’s special forces to go after the foursome, who were found that same day in a car travelling from Dnipropetrovsk to Kharkiv. According to Ihor Volovik of the SBU, “The man was a tourist. His kidnappers demanded $30,000 from his relatives for his release, which was supposed to be passed via an electronic money transfer system. The man was freed by Alpha officers and the three kidnappers are under arrest.” The man’s identity is being withheld for the time being, which only makes us want to know who it is that much more. A Brit here on the downlow making for a good kidnap victim… That could be any number of British bad boys – Wayne Rooney, Prince Harry, Russell Brand, just to name a few!

17 March 1995 Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada scraps the Crimean Constitution and post of Crimean President for actions against the state and promoting relations with Russia. Today, the Autonomous Republic of Crimea has its own legislative branch – the Verkhovna Rada of Crimea, and executive power branch – the Council of Ministers of Crimea.

Editor Takes it in the Teeth, Literally Taras Chornoivan, the editor of a newspaper in Vinnytsia, was brutally attacked last week, as reported by the Kyiv-based press freedom group Institute for Mass Information (IMI). Apparently, the attack occurred on the evening of Tuesday 5 March, and sent Chornoivan to a nearby hospital where he was treated for broken ribs and teeth, a concussion, chest trauma, and multiple bruises. The paper is Tarasova Pravda and is one known for its controversial reporting. One of the publication’s most recent series of articles accuses former governor Oleksandr Dombrovskiy of vote rigging in last year’s parliamentary election, accompanied by a rather explicit illustration of Dombrovskiy on the toilet. Chornoivan believes Tuesday’s attack was brought on by the publication of these articles. While authorities have issued a probe into the case, little is known at the moment. The three unidentified men who beat Chornoivan did not take anything from him, and fled the scene immediately after police were called, according to a friend of the editor. Not surprisingly, Dombrovskiy denies any involvement in the attack, and says neither he nor his staff had seen or read any of the previous articles printed in Tarasova Pravda. But that doesn’t seem to be good enough for the Committee to Protect Journalists, they are after blood and say that the “Ukrainian authorities must apprehend the assailants”.

This Week Art

15–21 March 2013

The Ukrainian Michelangelo Code of Pinsel Mystetsky Arsenal (Lavrska 10-12)

From 19 March until 20 April The international art-community has recently discovered works by the “Ukrainian Michelangelo” – Johann Pinsel. After a sensational presentation of his sculptures in the Louvre, the exhibition moves to Mystetsky Arsenal, where the works of this 18th century artist will continue to get the attention they deserve. Within this same exhibition and in the same physical space of Arsenal, 10 modern Ukrainian and foreign artists will create their own pieces in response to those of Pinsel. The life of Johann Georg Pinsel is full of mystery – we can’t even say for sure that he was Ukrainian. What historians do know for certain, however, is that Pinsel spent most of his career working in what is now western Ukraine, living in the town of Buchach in the Ternopil region.

FRAGMENTATION Exhibition of paintings by Viktor Deysun (UA) and Carlos Garcia Laos (Spain) Museum of Modern Art (Hlybochytska 17) From 28 February until 31 March  099-245-1118

His sculptures are deeply religious – they depict notable personages and stories from the Bible. However, unlike other pious artists, Pinsel humanised his saints and apostles and their struggles, creating expressive works brimming with emotion. Art historians say Pinsel combined Gothic plastic art, ancient Ukrainian woodcarving traditions, and Byzantine culture to create a Baroque style all his own and make these wooden monuments “speak out”. Through his works, Pinsel set out to make his audience respond emotionally, and he succeeded. The sharp angles of Pinsel’s carved, draped robes set a tense, dramatic mood and the poignant faces of his characters leave a lasting impression. It was this emotional impact that led Lviv Art Gallery researcher Borys Voznytsky to dub Pinsel the “Ukrainian Michelangelo”. Thanks goes to Voznytsky for the discovery of these incredible pieces and to Mystetsky Arsenal for presenting them. For more information call 288-5225.

16 March at 12.00 The story of Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs was inspired almost 170 years ago, and is every bit as popular today as it was back then. As a tale that has drama, love, humour and of course that happy ending, it was one that once motivated Polish composer Bohdan Pavlovsky and later Russian dancer and choreographer Genrikh Mayorov to create a ballet for children. The staging of this ballet in the National Opera House is a rare treat indeed – so don’t miss it! Tickets are 20 – 150hrv. For more information call 279-1169. 25 April at 18.00

A Glenn Miller Mood Glenn Miller Orchestra directed by Wil Salden (US, big band) Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103)

10 November at 19.00 Glenn Miller was a symbol of all that was good and positive in an era that saw immense global catastrophe. Playing swing music popular at the time, he brought the sounds of big band to Europe and beyond. The celebrated Glenn Miller Orchestra is one of four world orchestras with permission to play and perform this composer’s music, bringing the mood of Miller to Kyiv. The last time they were in town, tickets sold out fast. Make sure you get yours today! Tickets are 100 – 1,000hrv. For more information call 247-2316.

Every year, the youngest and most talented pianists from all over the world come to Kyiv to compete for best young pianist. You may not believe it, but children as young as 5- and 6-years old have been awarded this honour in past competitions. With little ones playing pieces of exceptional complexity, this year showcases all those born since 1999 in the category Horowitz Debut, and those born between 1998 – 2004 in the Junior Group. The grand finale and awards presentation will take place in the columned hall of the National Philharmonic, making it an evening of highbrow classical music for even the youngest performers. What is Old Becomes New Again The Brementown Musicians (children’s performance) House of Officers (Hrushevskoho 30/1)

30 March at 11.00, 15.00 The adventure of the musicians from Bremen has proved a hit throughout the decades, from as far back as the mid 19th century when the fairytale was originally written by the Brothers Grimm through to the 20th and 21st centuries thanks to a peppy Soviet cartoon and a bunch of children’s theatres still running the story. This new performance transfers all of the original story’s main characters to today, putting them in jeans and speaking in the slang. The story line remains unchanged, however, and the tale of true friendship lives on. Tickets are 50 – 180hrv. For more information call 253-8072.

Seth Sums Up Street Art Exhibition of photographs of works by Seth (Julien Malland, France) M17 (Antonovycha 102-104)

From 17 April Street-art is a phenomena connected most appropriately with its urban surrounding, responding to the social and culture changes of the city. Julien Malland, or Seth as he calls himself, got rolled up in this genre by exploring his native Paris, and only later started combining his trade – the study of cities – with travel. First visiting any world city, Malland is inspired by the air, the people, and the inherent urban mood, setting to work and then capturing his impressions on film. Here in Kyiv this spring, our city is given the opportunity to check out his work in pictures. For more information call 596-2030

“Sting’s

Guitarist”

It’s a title he freely admits to being “proud of ”, but Dominic Miller’s musical collaborations don’t end with the former The Police fronts-man gone solo. The names he’s worked with read like a “who’s who” of music – from opera to pop. Work with names like 60s icon Donovan to British pop-ettes The Sugababes interspersed with his own solorecordings. What’s On meets Miller in Kyiv to chart a musical career less ordinary.

B

ryan Adams, Joss Stone, The Backstreet Boys, Phil Collins, Sheryl Crow, Placido Domingo, Peter Gabriel, Nigel Kennedy, Tina Turner, Luciano Pavarotti, The Pretenders, Rod Stewart, Paul Young and more. The list is as diverse as it is impressive, yet there is no hint of arrogance and no posturing when it comes to Dominic Miller. At a workshop in Kyiv restaurant Cosmopolite ahead of a gig in restaurant/concert hall Oasis, Miller demonstrates he has a self-deprecating quality that has his audience eating from the palm of his hand. Perhaps it’s because he begins his talk by dropping a bombshell. “For me music is my life, I’m really obsessed with it and have been all my life, but I’ve also got six children and had two wives, so I’ve really f*cked in my life.” After a swift translation for the non-English speakers the effect is akin to hearing the proverbial pin drop.

Breaking Through I first meet Miller outside the hotel adjoining the restaurant, where he is having a quick drag on a cigarette before the workshop. He’s easily spotted. He has the laconic sense of style of a seasoned rocker, from his tousled mop of hair to his well-worn boots – it’s a thrown-together-in-five-minutes look that oozes casual cool. That “coolness” reaches new heights inside as soon as Miller picks up his guitar and starts playing his “signature” song Shape of My Heart. While, he has stage presence, this is a man who has been content to take a backseat to the big names for his entire musical career. It begs the question why? Miller quickly answers in his characteristically candid fashion. “I have no real personality, producers started calling because they knew I could do anything.” I beg to differ on the personality part, but quickly understand this is a guy who simply wants to play music without the added pressure of the spotlight. Describing life as a professional musician as a “never ending struggle”, in between playing samples, he talks about his evolution in music. Born in Buenos Aires to an American father and Irish mother, was raised in Argentina and Wisconsin, Miller moved to London to study classical guitar at The Guildhall School of Music under Sabastio Tapajos before going on to the pres-

tigious Berkley College in Boston. Despite his background, his accent is pure British as he explains his musical journey. “I’m a music student. I went to music college – I didn’t really learn a lot in college, but I’ve been a student of music ever since.” Initially he struggled to find work, he says, then, slowly but surely, the calls started coming from producers who had heard word of his versatility. That work would culminate in 1989 in what Miller says was his “big break”, before strumming the familiar chords from the Phil Collins hit Another Day in Paradise. It’s Miller who plays the nylon stringed guitar on the track.

Shaping the Song Then, in 1991, he auditioned for Sting and got the gig to play on Sting’s Soul Cages. Ten Summoner’s Tales followed, on which he co-wrote the emotive Shape of My Heart. As he tells it, the song evolved from his loathing of conventional guitar practice. “I hated scales, they’re so academic. So instead I would work for hours and hours playing Johann Sebastian Bach,” he says. “It’s like yoga.” Stripping the compositions of their natural tempo and instead playing them really slowly. “It’s f*cking difficult,” he quips. “I can do it all day. That’s probably why I’ve had two wives and why I’ve problems in my personal life.” That same obsession with understanding the work of Bach at what he calls a “forensic level” translates across also musical genres, he says. “I don’t really like country music, but I want to know how it works.” His “need to know” was the key ingredient in forming his lasting collaboration with Sting. “When I first met Sting 23 years ago, I found the perfect fit for my schizophrenic sound. He got the joke.” Shape of My Heart developed from a riff created from him “playing around with Chopin chords” and initially, Miller says he didn’t see the potential. Sting did. “He said ‘that’s a song’ and asked me if I wanted him to write some lyrics,” Miller says. “I said ‘sure’, he asked ‘do you want to know what it’s about?’ I said ‘no’.” That exchange sums up how he sees his role or place in the music world. “All I do is show up to a studio, I don’t think about me, I think about what’s right for the song and what is right for the artist. It’s very simple really.” •

There was all sorts of things Scottish including the renowned (in Scotland) Dougie Donnelly, world famous piper Roddie Deans, the Clann, a toast to the Haggis and a whole host of kilts. Most importantly, the guests dug deep in the live and silent auctions, raffle and in many other ways to raise lots of money for charity!

A crowd of reprobates. Who let them in, we’re not sure. But questions are being asked!

Find more photos of these events on the 8 March – Reloaded OLIMPIYSKY STADIUM The women who gathered at NSC Olimpiysky Stadium on 9 March might not have earned a spot in Guinness World Records, but they still had fun trying. The idea was to gather at least 50,000 women together in the stadium setting a world record in the process and extending the traditional celebrations of International Women’s Day beyond the ordinary. While only a fraction of the required number showed up on the night, perhaps because of chilly -5 Celsius cold and wind, a Ukrainian record was set and the women received congratulations from some of Ukraine’s top musicians including Alloise, Green Grey, O Torvald, Bahroma, and Natalia Gordienko. The event also included a football match between a Ukrainian show-biz side and retired footballers after which they took microphones in hands to entertain the audience!

Monochromatic Zoo BRUCIE COLLECTIONS On 6 March, Ukrainian and foreign critics and fans of black and white photography flocked to Brucie Collections for an exhibition opening showcasing the work of German photographer Wolf Ademeit. The artist, who claims photography is just a hobby for him, has been snapping pics for 30 years – capturing expressive portraits of zoo animals. Rather than focusing on wildlife in their naturally beautiful habitats, Ademeit finds charm and personality in the facial expressions of his subjects alone. If you are a fan of animal photography, this exhibition, until 28 April, is a must.

UFW Launch Party BUDDHA BAR Where the fashion set goes a party is sure to follow and on 5 March a large-scale soiree was held to launch the 32nd Ukrainian Fashion Week (UFW) at Kyiv nightlife hotspot Buddha Bar. The schmoozing was interspersed with a closer look at Olena Przhonskaya’s monochrome autumn/winter 2013–2014 collection, while entertainment came in the form of a Gorchitza performance and a dance flashmob from First Dance Agency. The celebrations continued throughout the week and on 9 March took on an ethnic theme as guests gathered for the AchaAcha Ethno Party featuring a special DJ set by Oleh Skrypka and some eastern live music. Indian and Ukrainian traditions combined in a cultural melting pot that both entertained and intrigued partygoers.
